The First is a better movie than Missed by a Dollar but Missed by a Dollar is a more fun to watch movie than the first and this is because The First had a budget and a theatrical release. The First is predictable, only has the basic surface-characterizations of the gang, and Laetitia, not Lupin, is the main character. Lupin is not even the main character! It's a good movie but as someone who is already in far too deep I can't get as excited about it as a movie where Fujiko continually loses all her money in investment schemes, Goemon is fundraising for a cult, Zenigata quits his job and gets arrested, Lupin gets shot in the chest and falls out of a helicopter, and Jigen straightens his hair. Everyone in The First does their trademark cool thing and it's cool but that's all they do! I have seen Goemon cut a plane in half all the goddamn time, I have seen Jigen drive recklessly, Fujiko doublecross everyone, Lupin get out of handcuffs, and Zenigata want to eat a cup noodle. And they don't even make the usual joke about how he gets paid starvation wages and that's why he's so hungry all the time (although to be fair, that's mostly a thing in the older specials/series. Modern Zeni doesn't make good money but he's able to feed himself generally). And that's before we even get to the plot - Oh No! Nazis are trying to get a superweapon! Oh no they get it but it blows up! Oh no Lupin disguises himself as Hitler for some reasons (I still do not know why he did that except to add another quarter hour to the story). Versus - Oh No! Lupin needs the ring to impress his girl of the week! Oh no he gets killed but not really! Oh no he buys an oil company to pump up the value and fraudulently sell it for a profit which Fujiko immediately uses to buy bad stocks! They're barely even criminals in The First, like stopping Nazis from blowing up the planet is not a bad thing. The only crimes they commit are like theft and reckless endangerment, come on

The thing about modern white nationalism, as in the idea of a single superior white race all over the world, is that it's very much an US idea, which started on the US history of slavery and segregation. European racists, I mean, anthropologists in the XIX-XX centuries did agree that white people were superior because of course they did, but they were too busy trying to discriminate each other in increasingly narrow racial categories, so you got for example, maps where all of Africa and Asia are painted as the same race, but Europe is divided in dozens of subraces depending on the prejudices of the author. It's morbidly fascinating. You know those jokes where Lovecraft writes about Irish or Italian people like they were aliens? That's exactly that. A German 'anthropologist' in the early XX century would balk at being told he's the same 'white' race as a Polish or an Italian, how dare you.
While this is terrible of course, because this "scientific" racism was used to legitimize imperialism and genocide, there is some dark humour for me in the fact that Hitler complained to Himmler (the director of the SS and the Ahnenerbe, the Nazi archeology division which was NOT made up for Indiana Jones) that his archeologists were embarrasing him because instead of finding the glorious past of the aryan germanic race, all they found was the "ancient germans" were "living in huts" while those "mediterraneans" were building glorious Rome and stuff
This is especially funny when you got all these neo-nazis praising Greece and Rome.

im very curious about neco arc. what is she from?
Funny enough that question in it of itself is a tad complicated
See her first appearance is in the tsukihime visual novel (a adult oriented visual novel released in december of 2000)
She is a parody of one of the main characters, a character named Arcueid Brunestud (a powerful vampire woman seen here)
Tumblr media
You see, neco arc is a parody of her that shows up in the scene that comes after a bad ending where they teach you how to not get a bad ending
Tumblr media
Here she was just a parody character purely for gags.
However it was in the later fighting game melty blood re act (a remake of the first melty blood fighting game...yes the visual novel became a fighting game.)
That she appeared again and is where she actually got character development and lore (as well as showing off other neco spirits like neco arc chaos)
Tumblr media
And since then she has been a staple in the melty blood games up to the newest one.funny enough the recent fames is where most neco arc memes spawn from
Tumblr media
She also was in the 2011 (i believe?) Melty blood anime called carnival phantasm.here she is working the counter of the Ahnenerbe coffee shop (super cute)
Tumblr media
TLDR. She technically is from tsukihime but her actual personality and lore starts in the melty blood fighting games. If you are curious about the stories, the lore is so fucking insane and deranged i cant explain

Heyy so I just started watching fma brotherhood again w my younger sibling, who hadn't seen it before. some things I'm now noticing dont sit too well with me. i was wondering if you could maybe help give context, and you seem to be THE person to ask abt this
it's abt the countries of amestris and xerxes. It seems to be based on nazi propaganda, and I know how that sounds, but like.. blonde white people in a country that's obv Persia that had ancient occult knowledge? that's literally the ahnenerbe's whole shtick, so I hope you see where I'm coming from w this one
I tried finding answers online, but none were satisfactory. Some ppl noticed what I did, and didn't rly seem to care. Others wrote it off as a consequence of coming up with the plot as it went along, but I don't think this makes sense as irl amestris was the wife of persian king xerxes I
plus all the persian imagery and clothing and architecture associated with xerxes in fma, and I rly doubt there'd be that many references without at least knowing abt the plots and myths the nazis conceived to dehumanize ppl
Sooo idk, am I overlooking something? I've never seen the original series or read the manga, so I wouldn't be surprised
Unfortunately I don't think that's a question that can easily be answered in one post, let alone by a (mostly) white gentile like me. I do know that Amestris was originally based off England during the Industrial Revolution (Arakawa says this in the first guidebook), but that doesn't really answer anything about Xerxes, huh... Though, it is true that the Middle East is the birthplace of alchemy, so that may be part of why Xerxes is Persian inspired. Maybe? I dunno. It is obnoxious at best that they're all pale and blond though.
At the very least I don't think FMA would be like, intentionally pro-nazi given the whole plot of "military dictatorships and ethnic genocide are bad", but still, that doesn't mean it's immune to flaws and propaganda, whether intentional or not. If there's something that makes you uncomfortable, that's absolutely a discussion worth having. But I'm sorry to say I don't think there's a lot of solid information I can provide in that regard, and I don't think there's one right or wrong answer to this sort of thing. Good luck and I'm sorry that this is like... A thing that needs to be discussed at all, sigh.
I will say this though: If you're sensitive to nazi stuff, just... Just don't watch the 2003 anime tbh. It's a whole mess and a half. But it wasn't written by Arakawa, so it doesn't really have any bearing on what's going on in Brotherhood, at least.

Atlantis's connections to Antisemitism
CW: ww2 n4z1s, antisemitism.
I'm at the point where i'm writing up my grimore section on the dangers of conspiracy theories, I just finished my page on starseeds and now i'm on to Atlantis. I originally wrote this as just a point in a previous post but I wanted to share my findings here with y'all.
Atlantis's Origins
So in my previous post i labelled the topic as Atlantis origins in antisemitism, that was incorrect. Atlantis was first told as a story by philosopher Plato in 360 B.C as an analogy for hubris and served as a comparison to Athens. in the story, the city was founded by demigods and formed a utopia taking advantage of the abundant resources on the Atlantean islands and became a great naval power. The city eventually grew too powerful and it's people too arrogant; it fell out of favour with the gods and was then destroyed and sunk into the Atlantic Ocean.
A Dangerous Snowball
The popularisation of the Atlantis story in our current times came from the n4z1 group the Ahnenerbe during ww2 (who also popularised many other modern conspiracy theories like ancient aliens and the ice wall) but that's not where the snowball started.
In the 18th century, french astronomer Jean-Slyvain Bailey centralized the Atlantis myth to the, also, mythical continent of Hyperborea a reoccurring location in ancient Greek stories.
Helena Blavatski a Russian-German Aristocrat, theosopher and Neo-Platonist was inspired by this idea and reshaped it to fit into her book The Secret Doctrine (a pseudo-scientific book that was popular among occultist and esoterics, that also included N4z1s. This book provided the n4z1 party with mythical precedent for their ideology and became the foundation of the Ahnenerbe, founded by Heinrich Himler, the man directly responsible for orchestrating the death of 11 million people.
Also overseen by Richard Walter Dava the man who coined the whyte nationalist phrase "blut und bogen" (blood and soil) and Herman Wirth, author of another pseudoscience book: The Rise of Mankind: An investigation into the religion, symbolism and writing of the Atlantic nordic race. This book was about the pre-history of the fictional Atlantis but this time populated by a race of hyperborean nordic superhumans.
The Devastating Effects
This book formulated the idea between the Ahnenerbe group that when Atlantis was mysteriously destroyed the survivors went on to populate the continent of Europe and the Mediterranean. Those people then went on to develop the cities and architecture of Greece and Rome and Egypt etc.
The job of the Ahnenerbe then was to go around the world looking for evidence of this ancient "Aryan Master race" (aka begging the question) in order to justify the invasion of those countries.
Thousands upon thousands of people lost their lives during this time and hundreds of cultures lost parts of their history to the Ahnenerbe some of which were completely destroyed in raids.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think this information is important because Atlantis is such a popular tool in media we need to know what affect it had on our history.
Nobody is immune to antisemitism.

supernatural s11e14 the vessel (w. robert berens)
don't judge, nic. (generally historical fiction is not my jam. the sigh i sighed when the title screen with nazi-occupied france came up... also why i immediately get tired over old timey men of letters stuff)
hold the phone, i know that music intro! it's non, je ne regrette rien by edith piaf - which was used to wonderful effect in inception. spent far, far too long trying to find a clip of it, everything is garbage quality and it's not streaming anywhere i can get it easily
well, i am definitely on board with stabbing nazis, with impunity. (and gee, men of letters related, color me surprised :p)
haha ok but wait
SAM 'Cause I found something. I mean, we need something. Magic. A weapon strong enough to give us a shot against Amara. So, I've been looking outside the lore in history. And I found this, the Vichy Memorandems. They were Nazi communications that puzzle historians to this day. And they speak of a super weapon obtained by the Ahnenerbe, said to be strong enough to win the war.
reminds me of the magicians rhinemann ultra
the magicians s2e2 hotel spa potions
I mean, it was amazing reading about how you used the Rhinemann at Gettysburg to help win the war for the Union. And it was you who slipped it to Rupert Chatwin for the Battle of the Bulge. I mean, you changed history.
the magicians s2e3 divine elimination
The spell that won World War II is called the Rhinemann Ultra? Sounds like a not-so-great beer.
and someone had to power-up with god .... juice (semen) to be able to cast it. anyway. god this is going to take forever.
SAM Well, these memos refer to it as "The Hand of God." I mean, that was sort of a catch all term for several objects he touched on Earth in Biblical times. But they're believed to contain traces of His power. DEAN Yeah, well the Nazis believed a lot of things. SAM Dean, Lucifer's caged. God's MIA, the only beings strong enough to battle Amara are gone. If we're gonna fight her, what better way to arm up than with an actual dose of His power?
just sayin. familiar!
so dean i got a pro-tip here for you. have more than one source of caffeine on-hand at all times. that way even if you're out of power or machine breaks or no grounds or whatever, you can have coffee. personal fan of starbucks doubleshot cans. and it reminded me of the self-heating coffee cans in the neuromancer universe way back when they first came out and i've been drinking them for my first coffee of the day since :p (william gibson writes about coffee a lot.)
Tumblr media
answers the incapacitated crowley question i had
Tumblr media
distressing. i generally like crowley, even if i don't like what he's getting up to. and having him in this forced pet play torture thing is pushing some really upsetting and unpleasant buttons for me. at least they let us know he's still in there fighting i guess sooner rather than later
DEAN Just in case things go sideways, somebody needs to be left standing to take care of the Darkness. We can't risk us both! And at the moment, I'm the least valuable player! You both know that I can't kill Amara, so the least I could do is get the thing that we need so that you can! SAM So you expect me to sit here and ride pine while you can Cas go play Jules Verne? DEAN Yes! No. I - who?
so he just used a 20,000 leagues under the sea reference but doesn't know who jules verne is? sure, jan. anyway. sure, yes, get dean and lucifer!cas alone on a sub together, sounds great. handwave away sam's confusion about logistics of time travel without wings
SAM (Resigned) Be safe. DEAN When am I not?
ha ha.
Tumblr media
oh, sam, i feel you.
LUCIFER Right. We'll double down on what screwed us the first time. You're really bringing your A ideas today. I can't believe I lost it. (sighs) Him. Can't believe I lost Dean.
and now dean is alone there, great. trying to figure out what submarine movie this is reminding me of but all i can figure i've seen enough is the hunt for red october (which is cold war) mashed with some vague memory of enigma machine on a sub thing - maybe from cryptonomicon? (book by neal stephenson which was kind of a mashup of current and historical fiction)
jackles is doing a good job with this and the production quality is nice but i'm emotionally detached and just want it to be over with. lucifer isn't even half assing his castiel cosplay but i guess sam is too distracted with imminent death for dean if they don't fix the problem
SAM Wait a second. I remember Bobby told me when you needed strength to retrieve us from the past, you used him to power up, you touched his soul, right?
LUCIFER That's right, I did that. But that procedure can be fatal. SAM Use my soul. That way maybe you'll have enough power to wield the spell. LUCIFER That isn't necessary. SAM It's worth the risk. Cas, Dean needs our help. I trust you.
ugh. the unknowingly begging for torture from the thing that tortured you for (an unknown but presumably) very long time, yeah. turns my stomach. is this over yet. at least the cat is out of the bag right after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DEAN So. Cas. SAM Yeah. What do we do? DEAN What else? We hunt Lucifer, trap the bastard, and save Cas. SAM Like I said. Lucifer may be in control now, but Cas may not come back willingly. I mean he chose it. DEAN No. No, not possible.
guess we're not mad about him saying yes to lucifer? all righty.
Tumblr media
getting in a lingering beauty shot
and closing with non, je ne regrette rien again

one of the biggest differences between Tsukihime and Fate is the closeness of the cast, and certainly part of that is the communal dining scenes. the Emiya household is built to function as this casual space to force friends and former enemies together over a common gathering
meanwhile, Tsukihime lacks any such thing. the cast are scattered about and most often interact with hostility. fittingly, there's no communal spaces. the Tohno manor, the school, the park, none of these spaces where characters interact are places for gathering. while the Tohno manor should in theory be a home, it's instead cold and empty, hostile to the kind of warm atmosphere that pervades Fate. it's a lot harder to imagine the cast all gathering together in one place, and on the occasions that it's happened in spinoff media, it's been in places like Ahnenerbe or new location, instead of anything original to Tsukihime
both approaches work for the stories that each is trying to tell but things like this really show how different the games are, and similarly, how different the protagonists are (after all, Shirou is a big part of fostering this environment)

Just had a braindead halfwit troll trying to criticize my thing about demanding representation of your ethnicity in climates that don’t produce your phenotype. Well I’m sorry, Parteigenosse Gyssling, but the fact is that if we’re making a movie about Africa it’s not going to be about “Aryan” blonds—and if we’re making a movie about Germany, it’s not going to have many Subsaharan blacks. Ditto fantasy counterparts.
Sorry if that confused you, perhaps you should learn real anthropology instead of the party-approved Ahnenerbe.

Here is a fun one. I heard that in Raiders of the Lost Ark the character of Indy is irrelevant. With or without him the Germans would have got the ark. They would have opened it and all died. So Indy is irrelevant. The Germans would not have the ark. Can you defend Indy?
Thank you! I have actually discussed this with my writing group a few years ago.
The fact is the nasty NAZIs did have the Ark. It was on an island they obviously controlled since they had submarine pens built into it.
The NAZIs kept almost pathologically meticulous records and would know that even if they haven't heard from the expedition on the island, the Ark was in place.
The fact that the Ark killed the entire expedition would only reinforce Hitler's desire to own and use such a weapon. Belloq probably worked for the bad guys under the auspices of the Ahnenerbe. With his team dead the NAZIs would most likely have sent teams from the ABWEHR, their Military Intelligence. If the ABWEHR failed then they would have sent the more fanatic SS-SD the Sicherheitsdienst. This rabid group would stay with it until they could control and use the Ark as a weapon. With the Ark Hitler would have won WWII.
"Indy" following the Ark with bulldog tenacity was able to secure it when the Ahnenerbe team met its richly deserved end. He removed it from the island before the NAZIs could assemble another team. And even though the US took the Ark and stored it away without study, it was only "Indy" who kept it out of Hitler's hands. So, "Indy" is not irrelevant to the story.

UPDATE: ignore me. It came up while I was tagging this post about a novelty phrenology dog's head, and all I could think of was the Discworld concept of retrophrenology*.
I had momentarily (and blessedly) forgotten about the SS Ahnenerbe and related unpleasantness.
*Men at Arms, Terry Pratchett:
Retrophrenology: It works like this. Phrenology, as everyone knows, is a way of reading someone's character, aptitude and abilities by examining the bumps and hollows on their head. Therefore - according to the kind of logical thinking that characterizes the Ankh-Morpork mind - it should be possible to mould someone's character by giving them carefully graded bumps in all the right places. You can go into a shop and order an artistic temperament with a tendency to introspection and a side order of hysteria. What you actually get is hit on the head with a selection of different size mallets, but it creates employment and keeps the money in circulation, and that's the main thing.

Oh fuck there’s a milf neco
Tumblr media
Yep, Neco Arc Destiny
Destiny is somewhat of a drama queen, and often cries about things like 'love and money' or 'we all look the same' in relation to the other Neco Spirits at Ahnenerbe. She tends to be lost in sentimental thoughts related to romance and womanhood, similar to neco arc chaos who frequently ponders life and manhood.
When a group of parents brings their children to Ahnenerbe, Destiny reveals that she has a young son of her own who she currently doesn't live with.
