Movement Project - Artist Research, Q Hayashida
Q Hayashida is a Japanese manga creator known for her works such as Dorohedoro and Dai Dark.
In one of her rare interviews, Hayashida reveals that she is a mixed media artist who uses whatever media she ‘feels like in the moment.’
The chaotic, sketchy, raw and colourful look to her art works harmoniously as she depicts her gory and dark but funny stories.
Tumblr media
I love her usage of gouache, watercolour, ink and pen, majority of the time mixing these media together in the same piece creating a layered texture reminiscent of grime, reflecting the apocalyptic settings often found in Hayashida’s manga. Matching her colours, line weight and compositions to fit each scene and its tone is highly impressive and a source of inspiration for myself since I first read her work Dorohedoro many months ago.
Her character design is also equally interesting. Dorohedoro’s cast including the protagonist, Kaiman, a man with a lizard head searching for the sorcerer who cursed him, mypersonal favourite being Jonson, a giant realistic cockroach and plenty others, diverse, well-written and designed human characters. I can’t forget the monsters, each with unique personalities highlighted by their designs, brilliantly adding to the horror aspect of her works.
Lastly, my favourite technique Q Hayashida uses to instil discomfort, is her use of repetition and massive spaces, infinite crowds of monsters showing the viewer how powerlessness feels and drawing giant empty settings, such as a department store where the protagonists are stuck in devoid of all life, which perfectly matched the unease the characters she wrote were feeling.

Artist research: Newgrange stone carvings.
Although I’ve no idea who produced the stone carvings on newgrange they’ve always fascinated me. I absolutely adore Neolithic Irish history. My school brought us to Newgrange and Knowth in 6th year. So all these photos I took myself. The entrance stone is fascinating as they’re is so many different symbols. The craftsmanship is spectacular for its time and they obviously had a very steady hand. The meaning behind it is unknown whether it be about the marriage between the sun and earth, a calendar, a woman’s body, the number of body’s found inside, the river that’s near by, many others or it could have just been people experimenting like I have been doing with my clay. Kerbstone 52 is also fascinating as it takes on new patterns such as the lozenges which could represent months or weeks. I’ve also included a decorated stone from Knowth.
To me personally I love visiting Newgrange as it’s so interesting to see the light come through. With this being said I have to say I prefer Knowth, I think Knowth looks more like what the passage tombs would have looked like in the day and Newgrange is now more stylised. It breaks my heart seeing the graffiti inside from many moons ago that take away from the original carvings. I love the mystery behind the standing stones that could have been carved but years of weathering have gotten rid of them.
At Knowth, they’ve made a new interpretation centre where you get to create rubbings of the carvings. I included mine! It didn’t turn out great but you can really get a feel for the carvings. They also have the tools they used and you can try carve a stone there. Which is really hard to do and you gain so much respect for the people who carved these stones as I barely lasted 5 minutes doing it.
It amazes me how they were able to creat such patterns and geometric patterns in these stones and I can’t imagine how long they must of taken. I’d imagine people spent their lives craving the stones and this implies that the bodies inside must have been of high status.
Many passage tombs like Newgrange can be found around the country. Many don’t have patterns on them but this isn’t to say they never had them. Weathering could have gotten rid of these. There are so many passage tombs and court-cairns in Sligo that I like to visit anytime I’m up there, they have become part of my daily routine as I feel such a connection to them! An other one which is closer to home is on the border between Tipp and Limerick, which I highly recommend as you can walk inside of it and see the structure of it. (And it’s completely free!!). I’ve been lucky enough to have a court cairn on my land as well as a souterrain (which is a passage underground).

Artist Research: Faith Ringgold
Faith Ringgold is a multidisciplinary artist. Her work combines sculpture, painting, textiles, illustration and performances art.
Her quilting works which she refers to as ‘story quilts’ were the pieces I found to be most interesting. The quilts depict important moments throughout the artist’s life. ‘Tar Beach’ is based on Ringgold’s childhood memory of being up and the roof her apartment building, the centre of the work is painted on fabric and the border is quilted, on closer inspection you can also see that she has added a story into the paneling to go along with the work .
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Ringgold’s work is relevant to my project as she uses continuous narrative to create movement in her work while also displaying the story which is what I’m trying to do with my current sculptural piece. Her interdisciplinary approach is also interesting and helped me to tie elements of my different electives together in my work.

Research on Solarpunk
Today I am reading sources about the Solarpunk movement in order to write an article about it. I found those 3 sources that are very insightful:
This last source is particularly relevant as it is an academic paper that, among other things, shows how literary imaginaries influence real life social changes and build communities.
I also thought it was funny to see the same Tumblr post referenced in multiple articles, which goes to show how the internet can be a significant way to build a community.

Tucking research
As tucking is a textiles technique I have never used before I wanted to first practice some sample patterns and stitches on a smaller scale.
A book from the library was suggested to me, for example of different types of tucks and how to make them. The book is called The art of manipulating fabric, by Colette Wolff. Along with this book I watched a series of step by step videos on YouTube by Gretchen Halle.
Tumblr media
On the page above I have tryed pin, double centred, blind, random and shell tucks.
Tumblr media
On this page I have curved tucks, which I really like the effect off but seem to be quite difficult to get completely correct, bow-tie tucks and crossover tucks.

Project : Portrait
Week : 19th March - 22nd March
Artist Research : Michael Borremans
Michael Borremans is a Belgian painter and film-maker, who is influenced by the techniques of impressionist painters such as Degas, Manet, and Goya. But also mirrors the psychological, enigmatic subject matter of surrealism. His melancholic, staged portraits are what captured my attention, particularly the faceless paintings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to the lack of identity that these figures have, they are almost objectified. They feel very lonely and claustrophobic, as they stare aimlessly at the wall, in which they are stood right up against. Almost as if they've been punished and are facing guilt.
I'm influenced by Borremans' range of back paintings, as they allow the viewer to only perceive the body. We can't make out the expression or feelings of the girls. We can only judge based off of their stance, the neutral colour palette and the composition. I'm looking at a similar idea for my concept for 'portrait', by focusing on how what I put on my body can shape a perception of me, allowing for pre-judgement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another appealing aspect to Borremans' work is his ability to transform his painting into film.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on a series of paintings and sketches from 2002-2005, he produced a film - 'Weight', in 2006. His absurdity in his subject matter translates from paper to camera with ease.

Movement
Artist research: Moebius
Jean "Moebius" Giraud was a French illustrator, cartoonist and writer. He has drawn many famous comics and his art style is very iconic. One of his well known comics is 'the World of Edena'. Moebius originally started these science fiction series after being commissioned by Citroën car company to make a short story in 1983. He later decided to expand on the universe, thus he created this graphic novel.

@gohan.bubbles on instagram is an artist I looked into after the workshop. I was attracted to there work because of the way they layer the different elements in there work and include various textures. It was helpful in steering my idea in working with the different textures of the city

• Through my work with Mary and Elaine in the clay & latex workshop one piece I came out with was these latex pieces that exemplifies texture, cracks and decay within a surface much like pyrite
Tumblr media
• Wondering how else i could develop the pyrite with clay i looked at artist Anne Butler and her ‘Kore’ series…
Tumblr media
• The work looks into the structure of mineral themselves and how disruption can occur within them much like pyrite,
Tumblr media
• From this we made my own structure of pyrite with all its own disruptive feature(cracks) and took photos of it,
• The piece being a structure once help together but since disrupted was inspired by my research of Cornelia Parker’s ‘Cold Matter’ of which i explored in an earlier post,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Though it’s not perfect, the imperfections emphasises the disruption the mineral holds within its structure

Artist Research- Maria De Haan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While looking through this book for some artist research I found a technique De Haan has used for her ceramics. I find the ‘smoke firing ‘ method very interesting as a way to alter ceramics surface and appearance.
The effect the smoke firing has on the pots reminds me of my own project as the ashy look connects to coal and coal dust. I think it is similar in a way to the blackened disrupted surface of a miners lungs from years in the underground tunnels.

I continued with my collage, focusing more on the pill’s effect on girls/women today. I wanted to look at how the pill is being prescribed to people for a variety of reasons aside from contraceptive purposes and because of this the age at which someone starts taking the pill becomes lower and lower. Once someone starts on the pill it’s likely that they’ll remain on it for the rest of their reproductive life. This led me back to my earlier artist research on pharmacopoeia’s “Cradle to Grave” ‘pill diaries’…it occurred to me the number of pill packets a person would go through in their life when taking into consideration the average age of starting on the pill is 16 while the average age of stopping it is 55.
Tumblr media
I wanted to create a childlike image using the pill packets and a bright playful colour palette to show the years of pills that may await an individual if they are assigned female at birth. 12 pill packets make up the ‘house’ and only represent a single year of taking the pill
Tumblr media
I continued on with the idea of “handing them out like smarties” which inspired the overall colour scheme and the smartie pills
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The quote I included above is;
“Doctors are men who prescribe. medicines of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, in human beings of whom they know nothing.” -Voltaire
I thought it was very fitting for the work I was creating this week

Artist Research - Sammy Baloji
Tumblr media
The artist I'm currently researching is Sammy Baloji, a photographer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He works in Lubumbashi and Brussels and held exhibitions in Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Bilbao, Cape Town, and Bamako.
I'm particularly interested in his pieces working with copper, creating a series of bas-reliefs and sculptures onto which dots, shapes, and lines create what first appears to be a sort of abstract patterning, but which in fact reflect patterns of body scarification from the late 19th and early 20th century, that reveal meaning about the identity and community of the people shown in these photographs.
Sammys work relates to mine as it also looks at disrupting the body and visually it can look quite distressing but in reality his work comes from a place of nostalgia for the past and an appreciation for the body and the stories it can tell.

Artist research: Eamon Colman.
I really like his art, I find it very interesting. He’s an abstract artist who creates works of landscapes. He had an exhibition a two years ago in my home town which the school brought us down to. It was really interesting and was lovely to hear about his artwork and how he creates it. He’s very environmentally conscious as he uses inks that aren’t as harmful. He uses lapis lazuli for the blue and the pink is from a flower which he grows in his garden.
He is a member of the AosDána.
He overlaps paper, with different textures, such as Japanese paper (which is all recycled). He also uses mixed media to create his pieces.
He often goes to workshops around the country which really interests me how present he is in the art world and how he is constantly experimenting with new medias.
The paper that is shown in the artist research is some information on his exhibition that took place in the Source. It also shows a list of artworks he had on display.
