Hello! Would you happen to have any recommendations for realistic anatomy books on humans (for art purposes)? A lot of the online anatomy references are very exaggerated and the models have only 'ideal' body types and don't depict any others (E.g. Online male anatomy references are extremely buff for no reason). Thank you for the help :)
I do have a small collection of anatomy-for-artists books, but honestly, those are also populated predominantly with people who look like living Greek sculptures. So, I asked around a bit for both book and online sources. Here are a few things:
Height Weight Chart --
A library that people have contributed multitudes of their own photos to. Some people took turnaround photos in form-fitting clothes. Some are just one-off snapshots of people in street clothes. But, both of those things can be useful in their own way, and there certainly are a lot of body types here. (Thanks for the link, Fable).
------------------------------------------------------
AdorkaStock --
Features a whole free pose gallery containing a really excellent array of varied bodies. The photos generally focus more on form than costume, and if anything, the extremely sculpted bodies you tend to see in other stock libraries are de-emphasized here.
------------------------------------------------------
Satine Zillah --
An expansive library of downloadable photo packs. Most of them feature athletic or thin body types, many are heavy on costuming, but there are some that focus on more variety if you take time to scroll through (elderly bodies, plus-size bodies, people with dwarfism, etc.)
------------------------------------------------------
Morpho --
I know a lot of people swear by these books by Michel Lauricella. Morpho: Fat and Skin Folds in particular seems to cover some ground that a lot of other anatomy/pose lessons just skip right over. Looks like it's available as an ebook too.
I hope that helps some! I'm sure there are other resources out there, though. If anyone has some solid recommendations, please leave them in the comments!

Dear artists: this is how long I use my cane. I need to have it about 6-8in in front of me for my arm to be straight. When my cane is at my side, my elbow is bent. If you're drawing a character with a cane at their side and their elbow is completely straight, the cane is way too short to be useful.

🫳 Drawing hands is a pain in the ass. 🫴 👏 Fact.👏
ICYMI 👉 I posted about HatoKing's excellent hand reference archive in an earlier post
👋 Luckily, there's seemingly infinite reference online of hands holding all kinds of things from all kinds of angles. 🤏
✍️ Just type —
"hand + drawing reference +
[thing you want to draw the hand doing or holding]"
— into any search engine or 🤘Pinterest👌 or 🤌DeviantArt🖖 or other archive and hit the jackpot. 🤞

🫲 please add your own to this list! 🫱
👎 I tried to find credits for ones without labels, but just got Pinterest dead-ends… I always wanna credit sources! Everyone should! 🤝
I added a ton of emoji hands to this. Will that make it more popular?

Frank Auerbach
Frank is a german painter who’s portraits in charcoal and oil paint stood out to me. His charcoal drawings are done as studies before paints. They are full of movement, energy and emotion. In many of them you can see pages that were glued over holes and drawn back into. This shows how aggressively he is drawing.
His paintings are made of layers of thick paint with very visible brush stokes and texture. Although simple they is very accurate observation used in these pieces. I hope to incorporate similar brush stokes in my future work.

The differences between referencing, studying and tracing artwork
Okay.
I’ve seen a lot of people get these three confused so here I’m going to break them down for you-
Referencing another’s artwork is when you look at their art and try to make yours look more like theirs.
Studying another’s artwork is when you take someone’s artwork, trace the outlines of it to get a feel for how it works and proceed to NOT USE said trace work. This is just so you get a feel of what you’re supposed to do.
And tracing is when you just trace someone else artwork. Don’t do this. This is a form of art theft. Unless the artist is 100% okay with it (and some are) don’t do it.
You are allowed to trace real life images though to use for your artwork just not another artist’s because that’s mean and that’s cheating.
I can also make an entire separate post just dedicated to what’s considered art theft.

@gohan.bubbles on instagram is an artist I looked into after the workshop. I was attracted to there work because of the way they layer the different elements in there work and include various textures. It was helpful in steering my idea in working with the different textures of the city
