#Blake once found him in a library shelf

Jaune is kinda of like a cat.
He will find a good napping spot, curl up, or maybe sprawl out, and just pass out.
He doesn't do it during the school day but if he can squeeze out a nap after classes and before training, which leaves him about 4-5 hours, he most definently will.
The first time he disappears for a nap, his team and team rwby freak out, because where did the blond noodle go?! He can't protect himself, and he has no idea what self preservation means!
They find him napping in the gardens. It takes them about 2ish hours of searching to find him.
They all thought that was his normal spot, so the next time he disappeared, they check the gardens. But nope! He was asleep on the roof, of the clock tower. No one really knows how he got there.
Now they try to see what the craziest place they can find him will be. Right now Ren is winning because he found Jaune in top of one of the launch pads at the cliff. He had to get a sack of flour and preform some Indiana Jones levels of bull shish to get jaune out of that one.
Sometimes if the person who finds him are a tired, they will join him.
And hew boy, if someone finds him when it gets cold, they cuddle up sooner then you can say nap, because Jaune is a human heater during winter, and a human A.C. unit during summer.
There have been fight over who gets to have him for the night.
I like to imagine this happens at Beacon, and continues on during the series, and the people who join them later on keep finding him in weird places.
Maria one found him in the bullhead's thrusters, they almost had a roasted jaune.
I really like this one and want to see it as a fic!

Opening Up
Blake X Yang, Bumbleby, fluff
Warnings: talks of abusive ex, Mentions stalkin, vulnerability
Looking down at her scroll, Blake noticed that Adam texted her once more "I need to see you." This was the 3rd time since she left for Beacon that he'd contacted her. She was sick of his harassment but didn't have it in her to respond. It was easier to keep a blind eye to something so invasive. After reading that, all she wanted was to climb in bed and cry herself to sleep. At least it was a place she could escape him.The feline faunus packed up her textbooks, notes and scroll, leaving the library to start her brisk walk back to her dorm.
She entered her room and collapsed in bed with a heavy sigh. In the bed above hers, Yang swung her head over the edge, her long gold locks falling down while her body remained in the top bunk bed. Hanging upside down, Her face began pooling with blood as she was confused and stunned aby her teammate's tears. Yang had never seen Blake cry, let alone this much. Blake was now bent over the edge of her bed, creating a pool into her hands. All these memories, the past was haunting her and she couldn’t run.
Yang flipped off the bunk bed, landing both feet on the floor. She sat next to her emotional teammate And put her hand on her thigh. Speaking out she said “Studying at Beacon shouldn’t be this difficult. Are you okay?”
Blake was stunned someone would approach her in this wet mess. Feeling safe enough to bring down her guard a bit, she lowered her hands from her face. Tears still flowing, she tried to make eye contact with her purple eyed friend.
She was exasperated and scared. Blake confessed, “I'm having problems with my ex.” Blake looked away and shook her head in disgust. “ We have history and it's been hard to get him to leave me alone.”
Now red eyed, the golden-haired girl contested“ I don’t know what you’ve tried, but if you tell me where I can find this guy, I'll punch his lights out.” Revved up, Yang stood up in a ready fighting position. After several jabs at the air demonstrating her skill, Blake had stopped crying. even though she was still teary eyed, a single corner of her lip was pulled upward. Blake Looked at how goofy yet brave yang was being for her and it made her wonder, did yang’s friendship come at a price like Adams did?
Feeling that pain again Blake bitterly asked “Why? Why do you act like this?”
This hurt Yang and she blinked for a moment eyebrows furrowed. She didn't understand where this was coming from; Why was Blake reacting this way? Her irises changed back to soft lavender eyes and Yang's eyes rolled defending herself “Well I care about you” faintly blushing seemingly hiding more than that.
While it was an honest statement, it was a statement Blake had heard Adam say when dismissing her or invalidating her.
Blake felt the pain coming back. The reality that nobody really cared about her was starting to set in again.
Painfully Blake yelled at Yang, “ I don’t need you to care about me! Just because you’re my teammate doesn’t mean you have to care about me!” Yangs laughs cut off the end of Blakes statement. She winks giving a finger gun to Blake, “ I’m pretty sure that's exactly what teammates are supposed to do! Besides, I care for you by choice. You couldn’t stop me caring about you if you tried.” Yang bent over at the hips and stuck her tongue out keeping her eyes closed.
Feeling totally disarmed, Blake’s smile returned and she laughed at this new bewildered feeling And she truly laughed with nothing else on her mind except her new found friend. Blushing only ever so slightly, Blake whispered gently, “ You have a big heart Yang.”
Her silly pose quickly went away as that was one of the most genuine things she’d been told, and heard. Her cheekbones flushed and below a crooked smile grew. Yang's eyes darted to a few different places before latching onto Blakes unwavering eyes. Yang lightly corrected, “ Just know my heart is big enough to care for you too”
Yang grabbed a book on the shelf she had seen Blake reading a few days ago and handed it to her; a bookmark protruded at about 2/3rds of the way through. Yang went back to her top bunk in just a single bound causing minimal reverberation.
Blake opened, and tried to focus on the book, but gave up after failing on the same page over 5 times. She closed it and her eyes, but her mind raced thinking about how nice it felt to feel cared about.
Thank you to @witches-and-wyvrens for moral support and thank you to all that read and enjoyed my work.

In Part 5 Kasey and Thomas get a little closer and Kasey has a hot dream... Enjoy!
~~~~~~
"What time is it, Timber? I'm starving..." Kasey asked, placing a hand on her rumbling stomach. She turned around from the pile of books she was sorting through, rubbing her tired eyes. Thomas liked it when she called him by the nickname Gally had made up only three weeks ago. No one else used it, just Kasey, and he liked the thought that she had a kind of secret special name for him.
"Ten minutes past nine." he answered, stretching his arms, stifling a yawn.
"Shit, we missed dinner again. We're gonna starve if we keep on working so hard without a proper meal a day." Kasey said, sighing.
"We can't let this happen, you're gonna lose all these sexy curves." Thomas said, wiggling his eyebrows, eyeing her from head to toe with a big grin. "Sexy, huh? Is that your way of buttering your boss up?" Kasey winked at him.
"Does it work?"
"I'm too hungry to even think about it."
"Ok...then let me pull some strings and get us something to eat." Thomas said. "Come with me."
Kasey followed him to the big tent with an adjoined kitchen near the beach that was used as a canteen on workdays. The place was deserted but there was still someone tinkering around in the kitchen.
"Fry?" Thomas called for his friend.
"Yeah?" Frypan appeared from behind the curtain that separated the kitchen from the canteen, holding a garbage bag in his hand.
"Oh, hey guys." he said, stuffing the bag in the trash can. "What's up."
"We missed dinner, Fry, but we're starving. Any chance that there are some leftovers for us?"
"Sorry, man. There's nothing left, not the tiniest crumble. Served pizza tonight and we're completely out of stock." Frypan shrugged his shoulders apologetically.
"Oh...okay. Shit."
"It's all right." Kasey said with a smile. "We're gonna find something. Maybe there are some biscuits in my bag at the library. That will do."
"Biscuits? I promised you dinner, Kay."
"Guys, listen, I really gotta go now, I have a date with Brenda, but I don't want to take responsibility for you two starving in front of my kitchen. So why don't you go inside and help yourselves? Feel free to use our supplies and cook a meal, okay?" Fry suggested, taking off his apron and handing it over to Thomas.
"Great! Thanks, man. I owe you one."
"Anytime, Tommy."
Looking back on this improvised dinner weeks later, Kasey remembered it as the night she'd fallen in love with Thomas, the whole scenery burnt into her brain like a brand.
"Sit down and relax, boss." Thomas placed a chair beside the stove, making her sit down with an inviting gesture. "Let Timber take care of you." The overly wicked wink he gave her not only made her laugh but helped her loosen up instantly, feeling secure and at home.
"You can cook? You seem to be a man of many talents." she teased him.
"You'll find out in a few minutes."
"Okay, let's hope for the best." she grinned. "Can I help you with something, make myself useful?"
"No, no, no. You just sit there and admire me, okay?" Although she couldn't see his face because he was starting to chop onions with his back turned on her, she could imagine the smirk on his lips. "Seriously, Kay. Just for once....do nothing, lean back and let go, okay? No need to be in charge now." He turned around to face her. "Even you have to rest sometimes."
"I do rest!" Kasey protested.
"No you don't. You're always on stand-by."
"Did you talk to Joe? Because this is exactly what he keeps on telling me." She rolled her eyes, letting out a deep sigh that told Thomas that she knew he and her brother were right.
"Well, then you better stop being stubborn and start listening to the people who care about you."
A warm feeling started to spread in Kasey's chest. She couldn't really tell why but she was extremely touched by his words. Maybe because she was surprised that he knew her so well after just a few days. That he cared about her. That spending so much time with him felt so natural, so good and so familiar though she hardly knew him. And so she finally did what she was told, she leaned back in her chair, stretched out her legs and crossed her arms behind her head, watching Thomas chopping, whisking and puttering and she actually even admired him - or at least his well-formed backside.
Half an hour later Kasey found herself enjoying a simple but delicious, lush omelet with cheese and onions.
"Oh my god, Thomas, this is soooo good." she moaned with pleasure after the first few bites.
"Yeah, I hear that often." he smirked, giving her a cheeky smile. The flirtatious look on his attractive face was so unexpectedly sexy she almost choked on her omelet. Coughing she gave him a sheepish smile.
"You're okay?" Thomas handed her over a bottle of water, his fingers brushing against hers for a moment.
"Yeah" she mumbled when in fact she wasn't. She felt thunderstruck, like 100 million volts running through her body, making her skin tingle with electricity and she didn't really know why.
Later that night she was tossing and turning in her bed, unable to stop thinking about Thomas, his sexy smirk and the touch of his hand. When she finally fell asleep she had this very confusing dream...
I'm standing in the middle of a dark room, disoriented. I don't know where I am or what I'm doing here and I'm scared. The air is cold, a cool breeze blowing through the room makes me shiver and I feel my chest getting tight. The all-consuming dark feeling of loneliness that spreads inside of me is so overwhelming, it makes me start to cry, hot tears of desperation start streaming down my face.
"Hello?" I shout out sobbing, hoping for response, but the only answer is the echo, my own voice resounding from the walls.
Suddenly the room lightens up. There are hundreds of big white candles burning, bathing everything in a warm, flickering,  golden shine and all fear is gone, fallen off in an instant, getting replaced by an intense feeling of being at home, safe and sound.
I look down and see I'm wearing a long, elegant, silken nightgown, the color of shimmering caribbean pearls, the fabric cool against my naked skin, hugging my body tightly, contouring every curve. I wear nothing underneath and I feel sensual and confident, lustful even.
I'm happy now, in an enthusiastic mood, feeling light like a feather. I spread my arms and turn round in a circle, again and again, like a child, till I feel dizzy and a silly giggle escapes my mouth. I now realize I am standing in the library. My library. Our library. It's fully equipped, the shelves filled with the most beautiful books I've ever seen, their spines all covered in golden letters and luxurious ornamentations.
I take a step forward to take a closer look when I stumble over something laying right at my feet. Shocked I see it's my favorite book, the book my father used to read to me, when I was a little girl. It's so precious to me and it makes me so sad to see it laying in the dirt, covered in a thick layer of dust and sand. I pick it up, cleaning it with my hands, blowing away the remains of the sandy coating. I turn around, knowing exactly where the book belongs, stepping closer to the shelf. I want to put the book back into the free space on the top but I'm too small, my arms are too short. The more I try to reach it the more the shelf seems to expand, getting higher and higher, growing into the ceiling that is covered in darkness, the light of the candles not bright enough to enlighten it. I stand on the tip of my toes and try again and again, because I feel the deep, urgent need to get the book back to where it belongs but it's hopeless. When I'm just about to give up and burst into tears of frustration I can feel someone's there with me. I sense his physical presence right behind me and without turning around I know it's Thomas and I start to relax, absolutely convinced everything's going to be fine, now that he's here. His body is just inches away from mine, his breath hot against my neck, sending pleasant shivers down my spine.
"I'm here, Kasey. I'm here to take care of you." he whispers in my ear and a wave of heat and arousal washes over my tingling body. I still hold the book in my hand, reaching out for the shelf and I don't dare to turn around and look at him, afraid he's going to disappear into thin air.
Thomas takes the book, stepping forward, closing the remaining space between our bodies. I feel his body pressed against my back and I notice he's just as aroused as I am. Thomas returns the book to its place without any effort and he doesn't step back when it's done. I enjoy the sensation of his closeness, of the heat he radiates.
"Kasey." I hear him mumble into my neck, his lips brushing against the sensitive flesh.  "Kasey..." The next thing I feel is a tender kiss placed lightly on my skin. Another one, on my shoulder this time. I can feel his tongue and his lips again and again, covering my neck, my shoulder blades and my upper spine with hot kisses, making me feel wanted, making me feel special, warmth spreading between my legs and in my heart. I still don't see him, still refuse to turn around, because I don't want to destroy the moment, the sensual atmosphere, the erotic experience.
"Thomas." I moan, bending my head back, eyes closed, my hands searching for his body, grabbing him by his thighs. He's naked. I swallow, looking down at me I realize my nightgown's gone. I'm naked too. I sigh contentedly when I feel Thomas strong hands on my waist, wandering higher and higher, touching my breasts gently. His breath is going fast and I feel his rock-hard erection pressing against my backside.
"Thomas." I repeat, shivering under his touch.
He keeps on stroking my breasts and I feel my nipples harden. His mouth is on my neck again, this time more sucking and biting than kissing, causing me a stinging pain, that I enjoy so much more than I would have ever expected.
I start rolling my hips, rubbing my bottom against his body, making him moan loudly which turns me on even more. He moves one hand away from my chest, letting it slide down my torso oh so slowly until it disappears between my legs. I feel his fingers glide over my vulva and into the wetness of my vagina, causing me to groan. He pulls back slowly and starts stimulating my clit, knowing exactly how to drive me crazy, how to turn my moans into hoarse, lustful shrieks.
"Look at me, Kay." he whispers, his voice thick with arousal, deep and husky.
I turn around slowly and there he is in all his gorgeous perfection. His golden brown eyes dark with lust, his cheeks flushed, his beautiful lips swollen and reddened. I admire his naked body, his toned form. He smiles at me and leans in and I know we're finally about to kiss. I yearn for the touch of his mouth. I want to feel his lips on mine, I want our tongues to unite in a passionate dance. I cup his face with my hands but before I can kiss him everything turns black and I fall into a deep dark void, crying from the top of my lungs.
Kasey woke up, screaming, all heated and sweaty, completely out of breath. She was so aroused that she couldn't help but touch herself to finish what Thomas had started in her dream.
When she was lying in the dark afterwards, confused and exhausted, realization dawned on her. She was beginning to fall for the guy...
RoseGarden Week 2020: Day One here we go!
March 29: Modern AU
This is actually a condensed version of an AU that I’ve been planning for a bit.
The bell above the door jingled as Ruby walked into the book store. Em noticed that the girl was one of the new college students and decided to call her nephew down.
“Oscar, come on down to help”
Oscar put down the book he was reading and walked over to where his aunt was.
“I’m a bit busy here, could you help the young lady that just walked in?” She asked.
“Sure, the one with the black hair?”
“Yes. Thank you dear.”
Oscar walked over to where Ruby was standing, looking at some books.
“Excuse me miss, do you need any help?”
Ruby looked up. “Um yes, I was trying to find fantasy and adventure books.”
“Oh, there right over here.”
Oscar led Ruby over to a corner of the store. Ruby quickly glanced over the bookshelf.
“I guess it’s not here.”
“Were you looking for something in particular,” Oscar asked.
“Kind of, but, actually, do you have any recommendations?”
Oscar was taken aback due a moment. It wasn’t often that people asked for recommendations from him. Normally people either browsed around or had a book in mind.
“Well, I liked this series.” Oscar took a hardback book with a brown cover and a red strip from the bottom left corner to the middle of the spine down and showed it to Ruby.
“I’ll think about it,” Ruby says, smiling.
“Good luck with your searching,” Oscar said, giving her a small wave and walking back to the front desk.
Ruby put the book back on the shelf, deciding to head back to her dorm fit now. Many she could go back to get a book at a different time.
———————————
The next time Ruby saw the boy was more of a glance than actually seeing him. It was the first official day of classes and Ruby was in the cafeteria talking with friends before they all had to actually start going to school. Weiss, Ruby’s friend from high school and dorm mate, Yang, Ruby’s sister, Blake, Yang’s girlfriend and dorm mate, Jaune, Ruby and Weiss’s friend from high school, Pyrrha, Jaune’s girlfriend, Ren and Nora, their dorm mates respectively. These eight had been hanging out for the past weeks before the semester started. It was in a conversation about what Blake had done over the summer when she looked around the room and saw him. The boy was sitting apart from most other people and seemed to be reading a book. She didn’t give it much thought as the conversation drew her back in.
———————————
The third time Ruby saw the boy was in her History class. It also was when she finally found out his name. The class itself was okay, Ruby did enjoy history and the teacher wasn’t that bad. Nothing much happened there though.
———————————
Ruby had some free time before lunch, so she decided to go to the Library to work.
I could try to find that book while I’m here too, She thought, Given that I haven’t been about to go check the bookstore again.
Ruby found the section of the library where the fantasy books were.
“Dang it.” It wasn’t there. She didn’t think it would be that popular. Or maybe that was the issue, it wasn’t popular so no one had it.
Ruby was turning to leave when a shiny cover caught her eye. The book had a brown hardback cover with a yellow stripe on the front.
Isn’t this the book the bookstore boy recommended? She wondered, No, that one has red. Maybe they’re in a series?
She looked and found the red-covered book, as well as what seemed to be the next one, a book with a green stripe. She took it off of the shelf and went over to the librarian.
“Hi, I’d like to check these two out please,” She asked.
The librarian took the books from her.
“Ahh, nice choice. I remember reading these”
The librarian handed the books back to Ruby.
“Thanks!” Ruby gave a small wave before walking away. She looked around for a place to sit and work, but most places already had people there. She found a medium sized table by the windows that only had one person sitting there. She chose a seat at the other end of the table. Ruby put on her headphones and took out a notebook and a pencil to start working on a new writing piece for class. Taking out a sheet of prompts from her teachers, she looked over the list and chose “Friends”
Ruby tapped her pencil, a start of an idea coming to her.
There once were four friends. Growing up together, they all fought for the world. They worked as a small group, knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
The leader was a woman called Summer, who had a eyes of the moon and a heart of the sun...
Ruby got absorbed into her writing and music that she didn’t notice that everyone was leaving. She did feel a tap on her shoulder though, and look up to see the boy, Oscar was his name she believed, standing next to her.
“It’s time for the next class if you have one, I just thought you should know so you don’t end up late or something.”
“Oh, thanks.” Ruby picked up all her stuff and stood up. “Do you have a class now?” She asked.
“Uh, no. Why?”
“Well I was wondering if you’d want to join my friends for lunch. I noticed you were alone this morning. And don’t worry, it’s only a few of the quieter ones.” Ruby gave a small giggle.
“That’d be nice, if I’m not interrupting,” Oscar replied.
“Of course not! Come on.”
The two of them started heading out of the library.
“So what were you writing?”
“Just a small piece for class.”
“So you’re studying writing?“
“Yeah, what about you?“
“Cool!”
———————————
———————————
I think I’m going to start to actually write it out in full. There’s so much that happens after and I WASN'T ABLE TO GET PENNY'S INTRODUCTION and I’m sad about having to miss all that.
Love Interest: Andrew Diggory
Summary: James and Lily Potter had made it quite clear that if they died in the war, the twins were to be raised by their godfathers: Sirius Black and Remus Lupin.  Of course the two marauders were as thick as thieves, so they would have gotten to grow up together, with people who loved them.  But then they did die, and their plans were ignored.  First, Harry was sent to live with the Dursleys, the last people Lily ever wanted near her son.  And then Cassia was given to Severus Snape, which they wanted even less.  Severus Snape still hated James, and was still obsessed with Lily, and raising Lily’s daughter became the perfect fodder for his delusion that Lily had chosen him, that Cassia was their daughter, and so Cassia Potter died, and Cassia Snape was born.  She never questioned it, never questioned why his coworkers would stumble over her name, never questioned why the faculty of Hogwarts, who’d all watched her grow up, were always so suspicious of her father.  Until she starts her first year at Hogwarts, and the Sorting Hat calls for Cassia Potter.
Tumblr media
Name: Dawn Connolly
Story: Until Proven Otherwise
Era: Golden Era
Face claim:  Lily James & Sabrina Carpenter
The muggleborn was still in her final year at Hogwarts, but she found herself stepping up within the Order of the Phoenix, alongside the infamous Marauders and her long time best friend and idol, Lily Potter. But one fateful Halloween, only months after finishing school tragedy shook Dawn’s world. Within hours, her closest confidant had died, as had two of her best friends, the third arrested and sent to jail, and the fourth locking himself away from the world. So Dawn packed up her life and returned to the muggle world. She kept her head down until most of her former colleagues had assumed her dead or forgotten about her entirely, working odd jobs in the town of Little Whinging, where she knew Lily’s sister lived. She waitressed, she sang, she wrote, she babysat Harry Potter. It wasn’t perfect, and she continued to grieve for her loved ones, but it was more than she could have hoped for; it was good. And then Sirius Black turns up on her doorstep.
Name: Emerald Evans
Story: Lightning Strikes
Era: Golden Era
Face claim:  Sophia Lillis & Abigail Cowen
Summary: Emerald Evans was proud to say that she was perfectly normal, thank you very much.  Raised by her aunt Mary MacDonald in Little Whinging, attending public school, a bit of a loner, everything was normal.  Maybe sometimes she saw her aunt holding something that had been across the room only moments before, maybe sometimes she found herself on the roof with no memory of moving, and maybe sometimes she thought she heard snakes speak to her, but she was perfectly normal.  Or so she thought, until a scrawny boy named Harry, with a funny scar and the exact same eyes as hers, walked into her classroom on the first day of primary school.  Ever since, her life has been becoming less and less normal until one day an owl flies into her window holding an envelope of all things.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Name: Gemini Black
Story: Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Era: Marauders’ Era
Face claim:  Nina Dobrev
Love interest: Remus Lupin
Summary:  Six years of inter-house rivalry could never come close to destroying the Black twins’ bond.  Even though most people only saw them as the Gryffindor rebel and the Slytherin princess, Sirius and Gemini were still as close as the day they were born.  After all, they were very much the same.  The only real differences were that Sirius had best friends and that his rebellion was much louder than hers - and that was no accident: the more obvious Sirius was in his opinions, the less anyone noticed Gemini’s.  But, as close as they were, they still had secrets.  Gemini still didn’t know the truth about Remus Lupin and his furry little problem, and Sirius… Sirius still didn’t know that she’d been in love with Remus since they were eleven.
Until one fateful full moon when Gemini goes to the Shrieking Shack to talk Sirius out of pranking Snape, and suddenly, for the first time in sixteen years, something might come between them.
Tumblr media
Name: Gemini Lyra Malfoy
Story: Rose Weasley and the New Generation
Face claim:  Dove Cameron
Love interest: Rose Weasley, Albus Potter
Summary:  What happened after the Battle of Hogwarts? Well, we know that in 19 years, they all have kids, but that’s about it. This series, starring Rose Weasley, starts before the epilogue, and will follow her all the way beyond her Hogwarts graduation. The Weasley-Potter kids have their work cut out for them, being the children of the most famous war heroes alive, time to see who makes it out alive.
Name: Jessica Stevens
Story: Love and War
Face claim:  Olivia Holt
Love interest: Sirius Black
Summary:  Everyone talked about the Marauders, close as brothers and all that, but no one ever talked about their female counterparts, close as sisters.  Lily Evans, Marlene McKinnon, Alice Fortescue, Mary Macdonald, and Jessica Stevens.  Best friends since the day they started at Hogwarts, it would always be the six of them.  But, as much as Lily hated James Potter, Jess loved Sirius Black.  And he loved her too.  But with their best friends hating each other, it seemed unlikely that they would ever have a chance to act on those feelings.  Even if they could have, they were a bit busy with a war, blood feuds, secret organizations, and trying to pass their OWLs.  Oh, and let’s not forget, a sickness that seemed to only be affecting muggle-borns like Jess and Lily.
Unfinished Work #6
So, long story short, me and my mom were joking about the Scooby Doo gang being weed sellers back in the day a couple months back, and I ended up writing a portion of a thing for it, and I still appreciate it.
It’s a shame it never got finished. I was planning of cameoing Flim-Flam and explaining how they got traveling and all that shiz.
Never thought of a name or summary for this, lol
Norville comes to school on the first day of kindergarten in baggy pants and a faded shirt, and continues to wear such clothes every day of every year since. His movements are scattered and disorganized; hair messy, eyes listless. He quickly receives the nickname Shaggy.
Shaggy's parents are hardly ever in the picture- never for any concerts, or parent-teacher conferences, or even just to pick him up after school- but the boy never minds. He swears they're trying, just busy, but no one ever really believes him.
He brings his puppy to school every day. Scooby is easily spooked but friendly, always either in his arms or pressed protectively against his desk. They both eat almost constantly, like they're starving, but they never gain any weight.
"My ma says I got the munchies," he tells his first friend, Fred Jones. "Whatever that means."
Velma Dinkley trips into the picture a few weeks later at the library. The little girl loves to learn, loves mysteries, so when she turns the corner into the crime aisle she doesn't notice Shaggy Rodgers sitting on the floor with his dog, Scooby, until she's sprawled out next to them.
"How'd you get a dog in here?" she asks, adjusting her spectacles, once Velma has regained herself. "It's against the rules."
Shaggy laughs and pets Scooby's scruff. "Scoob's magic, man. Nothing can stop him."
"Yeah," the dog seems to say, "magic."
"You won't tell, will you?"
Velma reluctantly shakes her head. "It's not right to have somebody take away your book before you're finished."
The boy smiles. Velma picks a book off the shelf and slumps down beside him, wrinkling her nose.
"Why do you smell like that?"
"Like what?"
"Like... I dunno. Smoke and something else."
"Oh." Shaggy shrugs his lanky shoulders. "My parents smoke."
Daphne Blake's mother and father seem to enjoy primping and primming her, and she does as well. But even spoiling her can't beat the joy she feels when they take her for self-defense classes, when her stance is solid and she throws blows at the gelatinous training dummy. Dancing and tea parties are nice, but fighting is where her talents seem to lie.
"Be careful who you hang around," her mother warns her. "I never want you to have to use any of this in your day-to-day life."
Her father shuffles her off to meet other spoiled kids, but very few connect with her. Perhaps it's only natural that people of the same background of leisure don't like others of the same breed. It takes the special feeling out of it.
So Daphne finally plucks up the courage to sit with Fred Jones and his friends. There is no mischief or mystery in her life at home, and that just seems unnatural. She immerses herself in novels and books and that weird hungry feeling she gets whenever Shaggy's parents drive them home.
Fred Jones meets Norvile Rodgers on the first day of kindergarten, but really they've known each other for a while now.
Well, to be more accurate, his parents know his parents. They go over once a month, both of them, tucked into their rust red van. Fred's never allowed to leave the vehicle.
The Rodgers home is odd to him. He's used to being the mayor's son, with cold and impersonal architecture, but their house is grungy and obviously a family heirloom. There's a gnarled oak tree with a swing tied to it, and sometimes their son will be swinging when they pull up. Fred tried waving once, but the boy always seems antsy.
The house is a gray color, with two floors. There's a green house in the back, with flowers and venus flytraps and that special patch his father says is just a weed. Fred's only seen the place in photos- dad says he's keeping them 'just in case.'
Fred's never been inside, or seen the Rodgers's personally, but he has met their neighbor, Angel, a tall black woman who takes care of Norvile when everyone is too busy. Judging by how at ease he is when the woman approaches, that's often.
That doesn't really bother Fred. His dad is never around. Though, deep down, he did kind of wish he had a nanny to keep him company.
"It's not just a weed," Shaggy tells Fred, affronted. "It's, like, weed. That's its name."
"Oh," he says.
"Yeah. You smoke it. Well, I think there's other ways to go about it, but I've only ever seen ma and pa smoke."
"Is that that terrible smell?" Daphne asks, picking at his bedspread. Shaggy lives on the second floor, far back. "You really need to get these washed."
"Well, it's the smoke and that, really. I can never remember to bring the clothes over to Ms. Dynamite for a wash." He shrugged. "I'm used to it."
"Me too," Scooby added.
"Weed is a drug. My parents told me about it." Velma lowers her voice and adjusts her glasses. "You won't get in trouble, will you?"
"No? I mean, sick people smoke it, so why would I?"
"Sick people get a special kind of weed. A government weed."
"Oh," Shaggy says, reaching up to rub at his eyes. "Well, I bet it's not as good-smelling as ma and pa's."
Shaggy's father is a tall but stout man, with big hands and a nice smile. He loves flowers and cooking stews, and he never hesitates to tell Velma things, or take them back to the greenhouse when they ask.
"Won't you get in trouble for this?"
"You lot are supervised, aren'tcha? I'll keep you safe."
"No, I mean with the weed. Won't the police arrest you?"
Shaggy's father lowers his voice. "Lemme tell you somethin', little miss. Maybe I would get arrested, somewhere outside of this town, but I've got connections here. Mr. Jones is a very good friend of mine-"
"My dad?" Fred butts in.
"Yes, sir. Your dad," he agreed, kneeling down to put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "The wife and I owe a lot to your old man, Fred."
"Why?"
"Now, I don't want you to think he's doin' this for selfish reasons-"
"It's okay, Mr. Rodgers. I know my dad is one of the bad guys."
"Why dya say that?"
"He told me. Also, I found an old monster mask in the attic. I think he might've chased some kids out of town or somethin'."
"Fair enough. Not gonna lie to you if you already know the truth." Mr. Rodgers stood up. "He likes what I'm sellin'. Ergo, he leaves me alone. Mr. Jones would never stick his neck out for me- make no mistake- but as long as I don't provoke the cops, he doesn't send 'em."
Shaggy was curiously examining the growth patch. "Dad, we're missing some."
"Nah, son. Red Herring was here for a visit yesterday, while you were with Ms. Dynamite."
"Oh," Shaggy says. "Okay."
Magic & Monster Ch5
Ruby picked through the herbalists stall for the right herbs and grasses needed to brew golden oriole potion and draconid oil. Both would be essential in this fight.
She picked up a handful or ergot seeds and put them on the bundle the herbalist was currently putting together for her.
“That will be all, thank you.” She took the bundle and handed the crooked over old man and handed him back two ducats.
“I think that’s everything I need.” She mumbled to herself as she stashed the bundle in Zwei’s side bags and climbed into the saddle.
She nodded to the merchant before spurring Zwei on back toward the castle. He tossed his head and snorted.
It promised to be another beautiful summer day. The sky was bright, clear and devoid of clouds. A gentle breeze was moving over the fields, tossing at Zwei’s mane and blowing her own black and red locks into her face.
The bright and warm sunlight was filtering through the trees growing along the side of the road, their broad leaves allowing only a few beams to breach the shade. The occasional beam hit her face as she rode at an easy trot down the dirt path.
The trees ended a few hundred yards from the castle, leaving her more exposed to the late morning sun. The heat felt good on her back, for now. Within a couple more hours the sun would reach its zenith and the constant heat and light would be unbearable.
For now she soaked up all the warming sunlight she could considering that after sunset she would be descending once again into the catacombs beneath the castle to find and slay the basilisk.
She gave the guards on the ramparts a lazy wave as she rode through the large open gates and through the courtyard to the stables.
A few stable hands were milling about taking care of all the other horses in residence. Ruby nodded and waved at them, most of which returned her greetings happily, save one. An elven servant with slicked back red hair, a white bandana wrapped around his forehead, hanging low and almost covering his eyes.
She waved at him and he ignored her, hauling a square bale of hay out of the stables and out into the field where the horses were currently being allowed to stretch their legs.
She just shrugged, she was long used to the sometimes standoff nature of elves, despite the fact that she was a Witcher (Vatt’ghern in the elder language used by elves) and often considered a race unto themselves, to elves she was D’hoine, a human. An interloper just like her ancestors who had been stranded in this world by the conjunction of the spheres several millennia ago.
She hauled herself off Zwei and gathered all her things from his saddle bags after hanging the saddle up.
She had a lot of work to do before nightfall.
A servant showed her to the castle lab and she quickly got to work grinding the seeds and other ingredients for the draconid oil while the potions were brewed over the course of a few hours. Once the oil was ready she poured it into a small vial. She wouldn’t apply that until after she was down there.
She watched the distillery slowly brew her potions one drip at a time as she sharpened her sword. She was trying to focus on the hunt ahead of her but all she could think about was snowy-haired Sorceress.
She hadn’t seen Weiss since she’d left her room the night before. She’d taken her breakfast in the kitchen with the staff, it was more relaxed than having breakfast with Oobleck and Weiss. Not to mention she was still a little embarrassed that Weiss had heard her thoughts about wanting to run her fingers through her hair. Just thinking about it made her stomach flip uneasily.
After some thought she realized that yeah, she kind of liked Weiss. She was smart and quick-witted, if a little cold. Some people were just like that, not everyone could make an entire inn worth of strangers into their best friends like her sister.
She was also very beautiful, though that went without saying.
Really, she was surprised the Sorceress hadn’t told her off. Weiss didn’t seem the type to shy away from confrontation. Maybe she was just trying to spare them both some embarrassment?
She sighed and looked at the slowly distilling potions, she had a couple hours and her sword wasn’t going to get any sharper. She did need to find Weiss and tell her that she was going down alone this time. No doubt the Sorceress would be displeased by that.
She stood from the workbench and slid the sword back into its sheath across her back before going in search of Weiss.
A servant was able to point her in the direction of the library after a half hour of searching. The walk to the library was quiet and leisurely. Until she turned a corner and ran smack dab into a familiar face.
“I’m very sorry, please forgive me.” It was the golden eye’d servant from last night. She begged for forgiveness.
“No, it’s my fault.” Ruby waved away her plea as she stooped down to start picking up the linens the other woman had been carrying.
Ruby was quick to scoop them up before the servant had a chance and handed them back.
“Here, I wasn’t looking where I was going, forgive me…” She paused.
“Oh… Blake.” She finally said. “My name is Blake.”
“Please accept my apology, Blake.” She held out the linens. Blake hesitated a moment before taking the laundry back and nodded.
Ruby smiled and gave a nod before continuing on her way to the library.
She quietly pushed open the door and peeking inside.
Shelf after shelf of large leather bound tomes filled the room as far as the eye could see. Massive floor to ceiling windows dotted every wall of the room, allowing as much light as possible to fill the room.
She walked silently through the rows of books, running her gloved fingers over their spines as she went. The scent of old parchment and ink tickled her nose.
Books covering every subject from magic to shoemaking could be found. She stopped and glanced at a book about fairy tales. And couldn’t stop herself from pulling it from its place on the shelf. The weighty tome was thick and bound in deep red leather with shiny gold embossing.
“ Fairy Tales from the Beyond.”
She might have some time to read this either after the job or in the morning. Either way she tucked it under her arm to deposit in her room for later.
She continued stalking through the books until her prey was found.
Weiss was leaned back in a plush chair, with a heavy tome settled across her lap. She seemed completely engrossed in it as Ruby walked very clearly across the middle of the room, though she made no sound, a byproduct of her training. It couldn’t be helped.
Of course where her movements never betrayed her, her curiosity always did in the end.
“Whatcha reading?”
Weiss nearly jumped out of her own skin at the sudden voice. She scowled, turning toward the intruder.
Her eyes landed on Ruby standing beside her chair.
“We are under constant threat of assassination.” She whispered harshly. “Must you sneak around like that.” She grumbled.
“I don’t think you would have heard me if I had slammed the door open and knocked over every shelf on the way.” She smiled at how engrossed she was in the book on her lap. “What’s so interesting?” She tried again.
“Nothing of interest to you, I’m sure.” She started to turn the book away but Ruby was faster and leaned over to read the title.
“A compendium of Witcher facts and practices?” There was a surprised lilt to her voice that colored Weiss’s normally pale cheeks.
“I was curious about the extent of your abilities.” She explained. “The book seems to have more speculation than facts.” the sorceress groussed, making Ruby chuckle.
“Witcher’s aren't really the talkative types...” She started but Weiss was giving her a disbelieving look. “Most, aren’t.” She amended, setting her book on the table. “Also, if you wanted to know something all you had to do was ask.” She sat in the chair next to Weiss and gave her a questioning look.
Weiss carefully closed her book and set it on the table before folding her hands over her carefully crossed legs.
“Very well….” She started. Looking at the Witcher thoughtfully. “You’ve said before that most poisons don’t bother you. Is that the extent of your enhanced immune system?” She questioned.
“I’m immune to all sickness and diseases. The mutations they give us change our entire body chemistry. It of course does other stuff too, like make us sterile, but ya know…” She lifted and lowered her hands like a scale.
Looking closely at the Witcher she spotted the wolf head medallion sitting on her chest.
“Your medallion.” Weiss started. “The book said that without it you’re powerless...” She stopped when Ruby snorted.
Ruby closed her hand around the dark grey metal hanging from her neck.
“That’s an old myth.” Ruby said. “ My medallion has nothing to do with my abilities.”
“Than why have it?” Weiss questioned, curious.
“All Witchers have one. It’s imbued with magic and tells me when magic is nearby, illusions, monsters… It's invaluable, but I can kill a monster just fine without it.” Ruby assured. “Besides, it denotes which school you’re from and I’ve often gotten jobs based on my school's reputation over the years.”
“And which school is that?”
“The school of the Wolf, of course.” She held up the wolf head medallion proudly for Weiss’s inspection. “There are six Witcher schools that I know of, the Wolf and as you mentioned the other day, the Cat.” She explained.
“And the other four?” Weiss’s love of learning kept her asking questions.
“I don’t know much about them but the other four are the Bear, Viper, Griffin and Manticore schools.” She laid the snarling wolf head back on her chest.
“That sign you used, last night, on the snake. How many of those are there?” The sorceress questioned. Weiss was always interested in learning about different types of magic and how they were employed. Ruby suppressed the smile that threatened to spill onto her face.
It felt like she was back in class at Kaer Morhen, except now she was the teacher.
“There are five basic Witcher signs. Axii, Igni, Aard, Quen and Yrden. Actually most mages I’ve known have always been kinda snooty about it cause it’s really basic compared to what people like you can do.” She admitted. “I know the things you can do are amazing in comparison but there’s no reason to be snotty about it.” Ruby grumbled, crossing her arms and leaning back in the chair.
Weiss rolled her eyes at the Witcher’s whining but couldn’t stop the corners of her mouth from twitching upwards at the pout on her face.
“Considering how stoic and serious I’ve heard Witchers are supposed to be how did you get to be such a… dolt?” She asked with a cocked brow.
“That’s all natural to me.” Ruby smiled in what she hoped was an adequately charming grin. Judging by the way Weiss turned away sharply, rolling her eyes she thought it might have worked.
They sat in companionable silence for a minute, Ruby just enjoying the company and the warm sunlight streaming down on her from the large window they sat under.
The comment of hers of it being natural to her reminded Weiss of something she had been trying to look for in the book.
“How… do the trials of the grasses work?” Weiss questioned, turning back to the pleased Witcher.
Ruby’s face immediately turned more serious, her smile dropping away and the air seemed heavier than it had only a moment before.
“The trials…” She started slowly. “Are what makes us Witchers, like I’ve said before. The trial of grasses is a secret concoction of herbs and things that is given to us through our veins when we have completed the first steps of our training.” She turned away from Weiss, looking out into space.
“It breaks us down from the inside. As children, were more malleable and our bodies more open to change. It breaks us down and then they induce the mutagens that build us back up, into Witchers.” Ruby’s hands fisted into the material of her pants. “It takes days… and as you can imagine just because your body is more open to change does not mean that it comes easily…” She looked back to Weiss. “Sweat, vomit, fever, convulsions and hallucinations, all while strapped to a metal table, but the worst part is the pain… ” She trailed off, her eyes looking far off and Weiss could see the memories flashing there.
“Ruby…” The Witcher didn’t move. “Ruby!” She called again. This time she jerked, coming back to herself.
“Ah, sorry. Weiss.” She apologized looking down.
“No,” Weiss said. “Don’t apologize for something that isn’t your fault.” The Sorceress said, standing up and brushing the imaginary wrinkles out of her dress.
“I’m sorry I got so heavy, there…”
“What did I just say?” The Sorceress scowled, pointing a finger straight at the Witcher, who starred crossed eyed at the digit just an inch from her nose.
“Ah… ok.” She nodded complacently.
“Good,” Weiss said, picking her book off the table and walking over to a shelf with a single empty space and pushing the book back into its place.
“If you’re ready, Oobleck created a list of the servants who have gone missing.” She said, walking back over to the table and picking up a piece of parchment Ruby had taken no notice of until now.
“Oh, right, sure.” She stood and followed Weiss out of the library and across the castle where most of the servants quarters were located.
“This is the first room.” Weiss indicated as they stopped in front of the first door.
The inside looked quite different from Ruby’s room. It was obviously a servants room. It was sparsely decorated, the walls were not the only thing bare though. There was a small pallet pushed up against the wall in one corner. The blankets thrown back probably from the last time the rooms occupant had been in them. A short bedside table stood next to it, a single candle sat tipped over on it.
A threadbare rug laying on the cold stone floor was torn and dirty. It was impossible to tell what was the cause of a struggle and what was just in disrepair. Ruby and Weiss both went over the room with a fine tooth comb but came back with nothing except the fact that the scattered bedding seemed to indicate that its owner had been dragged from it. Not much to go on.
Weiss lead the way to the next room and it was nearly identical to the last.
Searching through the bedding Ruby did find one distinct difference.
Strewn about the pillow was a fine white powder.
Pulling off her glove Ruby ran a hand through it and rubbed her fingers together.
“What is this?” She mumbled to herself.
“Let me see.” Weiss was suddenly at her side, peering at the mysterious substance. Before Ruby could stop her she had scooped a miniscule amount onto her finger a testingly touched it to her tongue.
“What the hell are you...!?” Ruby started, shocked that the sensible Sorceress would just taste something she found in a stranger's bed.
“As I thought. It’s fisstech.” She said after making a face.
“The narcotic?” Ruby blinked. Weiss sent her a look that made her flinch.
“No, like the cat. Of course the narcotic.” She huffed. “There’s nothing unusual about a servant with a fisstech habit though.”
“It’s the only interesting thing we’ve found so far though.” Ruby. “How do you know what fisstech tastes like?” She asked as an afterthought as they left the room.
“I’ve used it in mixes for elixirs before.” She insisted.
“Uhuh,..” Ruby grinned at the pointed look Weiss gave her.
The next few rooms were just as empty as the first two but in nearly all of them they found traces of fisstech in the beds.
“One or two servants is one thing, but all of the victims? That can’t be a coincidence.” Weiss pursed her lips in thought.
“I don’t see the connection.” Ruby frowned.
“Fisstech is often used as an anesthesia, to render patients docile or unconscious.” She hummed.
“So… maybe it’s being used to drug them in their beds so it’s easier to get them down to the catacombs, where the basilisk is waiting for an easy meal…” Ruby picked up on the Sorceress’s train of thought.
“It’s an idea.” Weiss nodded.
“The best one we have so far.” Ruby agreed as she glanced out the window. The sky was turning a vibrant orange. It was almost time.
“I need to go back to the lab and get my potions. It’s time for me to go back down.” She turned back to Weiss who glanced out the window with a nod.
“Let me go change.” She started.
“Actually…” Ruby hesitated. “I’m going down alone this time.”
Weiss glared but before she could utter a word Ruby held up her hands.
“I appreciate that you want to help, Weiss, but you don’t know how to fight a basilisk, you are just as susceptible to it’s poison as a regular person.” She reminded. “Besides, while I’m sure your spells are powerful they probably aren’t fit for the kind of close quarter combat that will be going on down their.” Ruby reasoned with the glaring Sorceress.
“Fine.” She clipped and turned on heel and strutted down the hall. Ruby watched her go until her white hair disappeared around the corner.
“Well… I guess that could have gone worse…” She sighed, shaking her head.
She walked quickly back to the lab and was pleased to find her potions had finish distilling. She poured them carefully into vials and tucked them into the pouch at her waist as she went over her mental checklist.
She had her oil, potions and her sword was sharp and ready.
‘Let’s do this.’ She thought as she walked down the stairs leading to the dungeon.
The usual guard was standing there, keeping watch over the entrance to the catacombs. What surprised Ruby was to find Weiss standing there as well.
“Weiss…” The Witcher started just to be cut off.
“I will wait here for your return, Witcher.” She said haughtily. Perhaps for the guards benefit, or perhaps because she was still mad at her, probably both. Ruby nodded nonetheless and pulled the small bottle of Golden Oriole potion from her pouch and pulled out the cork.
It was an unpleasant yellow color.
“That doesn’t look at all safe to drink…” Weiss eyed the bottle warily.
“For you? Absolutely not. For me? Ehh….” She wiggled her hand in a so-so motion that made Weiss’s eyebrows disappear into her hairline as she tipped her head back and drank the whole bottles worth.
“Blegh!” She made a disgusted face after swallowing the last drop. “Never will get used to that…” She smacked her lips as she pulled out the next bottle and downed it all as well to Weiss’s silent horror. The cat potion quickly took effect, enhancing her eyesight.
“Alright. I’m ready.” She wiped her mouth with the back of her sleeve.
The guard nodded and unlocked the old door.
She started down the steps and just before the door closed behind her she was able to make out a voice, barely audible even to her hearing.
“Be careful.”
This post was inspired by Ally’s series (which was inspired by Lia at Lost in a Story).
It works like this
Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
Order on ascending date added.
Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books
Read the synopsis of the books
Decide: keep it or should it go?
    The Complete Poetry and Prose by William Blake, David V. Erdman (editor)
Since its first publication in 1965, this edition has been widely hailed as the best available text of Blake’s poetry and prose. Now revised, it includes up-to-date work on variants, chronology of the poems, and critical commentary by Harold Bloom. An “Approved Edition” of the Center for Scholarly Editions of the Modern Language Association.
Date added to TBR: September 2, 2010 Keep or Ditch? Ditch Comments: I went through a William Blake obsession in high school after I read Red Dragon and while, if I saw this book on sale I’d probably buy it, I wouldn’t go out of my way to read it therefore it doesn’t belong on my TBR.
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, Craig Raine
Humbert Humbert – scholar, aesthete and romantic – has fallen completely and utterly in love with Lolita Haze, his landlady’s gum-snapping, silky skinned twelve-year-old daughter. Reluctantly agreeing to marry Mrs Haze just to be close to Lolita, Humbert suffers greatly in the pursuit of romance; but when Lo herself starts looking for attention elsewhere, he will carry her off on a desperate cross-country misadventure, all in the name of Love. Hilarious, flamboyant, heart-breaking and full of ingenious word play, Lolita is an immaculate, unforgettable masterpiece of obsession, delusion and lust.
Date added to TBR: September 2, 2010 Keep or Ditch? Ditch Comments: Honestly? I just don’t think I could stomach actually reading this.
Books That Changed the World by Robert B. Downs
From the Bible, the Iliad, and the Republic to Civil Disobedience, Das Kapital, and Silent Spring, this revised and greatly expanded edition is a monument to the power of the printed word-an informative discussion of many of the most important works ever created.
Date added to TBR: September 2, 2010 Keep or Ditch? Ditch Comments: While this sounds interesting… I don’t think I’d want to read an entire book. Especially one that is likely dated. I think I’d rather skim a blog post with this list LOL!
Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins
Still Life with Woodpecker is a sort of a love story that takes place inside a pack of Camel cigarettes. It reveals the purpose of the moon, explains the difference between criminals and outlaws, examines the conflict between social activism and romantic individualism, and paints a portrait of contemporary society that includes powerful Arabs, exiled royalty, and pregnant cheerleaders. It also deals with the problem of redheads.
Date added to TBR: September 2, 2010 Keep or Ditch? Ditch Comments: I have no idea why I added this to my TBR in the first place…
Immanuel’s Veins (Books of History Chronicles) by Ted Dekker
This story is for everyone–but not everyone is for this story.
It is a dangerous tale of times past. A love story full of deep seduction. A story of terrible longing and bold sacrifice.
Then as now, evil begins its courtship cloaked in light. And the heart embraces what it should flee. Forgetting it once had a truer lover.
With a kiss, evil will ravage body, soul, and mind. Yet there remains hope, because the heart knows no bounds.
Love will prove greater than lust. Sacrifice will overcome seduction. And blood will flow.
Because the battle for the heart is always violently opposed. For those desperate to drink deep from this fountain of life, enter.
But remember, not everyone is for this story.
Date added to TBR: September 15, 2010 Keep or Ditch? Ditch Comments: Dear Bree from 2010… WTF?
  The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.
By her brother’s graveside, Liesel’s life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor’s wife’s library, wherever there are books to be found.
But these are dangerous times. When Liesel’s foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel’s world is both opened up, and closed down.
In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.
Date added to TBR: June 27, 2011 Keep or Ditch? Ditch Comments: I actually DNF’ed this book many years ago, but not because I didn’t appreciate it. I actually loved how it was written and remember tagging almost every other page, but I kept choosing other books instead of finishing it until eventually I put it down for good.
Ditch Comments: My friend and I started a meditation group back in 2011 and this was what we kind of based our meetings on… we followed the meditations in this book, so I got through some of this book, but when our group fizzled out, I never really went back to it and I don’t see myself doing so. That is not to say this isn’t a wonderful book for beginners, because it truly is. I highly recommend this box set to anyone who is interested in meditation, but it just doesn’t belong on my TBR.
Helen of Troy by Margaret George
A lush, seductive novel of the legendary beauty whose face launched a thousand ships
Daughter of a god, wife of a king, prize of antiquity’s bloodiest war, Helen of Troy has inspired artists for millennia. Now, Margaret George, the highly acclaimed bestselling historical novelist, has turned her intelligent, perceptive eye to the myth that is Helen of Troy.
Margaret George breathes new life into the great Homeric tale by having Helen narrate her own story. Through her eyes and in her voice, we experience the young Helen’s discovery of her divine origin and her terrifying beauty. While hardly more than a girl, Helen married the remote Spartan king Menelaus and bore him a daughter. By the age of twenty, the world’s most beautiful woman was resigned to a passionless marriage until she encountered the handsome Trojan prince Paris. And once the lovers flee to Troy, war, murder, and tragedy become inevitable. In Helen of Troy, Margaret George has captured a timeless legend in a mesmerizing tale of a woman whose life was destined to create strife and destroy civilizations.
I do really want to read this book because I effing hate Helen of Troy and Paris with a fiery passion. I think they’re both despicably selfish and stupid and I’d love to read this book and see their side of the story.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page. It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken.
