It’s certainly not a surprise that Leon is a fan favorite within the RE community. Why do you think this is? It’s something I’ve wondered before. Leon is my favorite character too, but I just assumed I was biased since RE4 was the first RE game I ever played. However, it’s clearly not an unpopular opinion. I just kind of wonder what makes him different than, say, Chris. It seems like Leon is the character that most people gravitate to.

Oh! Thank you for asking this is a super interesting question! I have a few rambling thoughts on it but maybe nothing concrete:

I feel like a lot of it initially has to do with his pretty boy attractiveness and gender nonconformity. Like Chris is very much a man's man; he's military, he's buff, he's your typical Jason Bourne-- he's the standard image of power, skill, and success in dire circumstances. We see a lot of Chris everywhere. Leon however, while he has many of the same attributes as Chris, is more feminized. He has long hair, and a pretty face-- he's built more like a male model than a survivor of war and this makes him enticing. He kinda falls into the "how does someone so pretty and kind end up here?" trope that a lot of female characters experience. He feels different and new, at least that's what I think is initially enticing about him.

When you dive deeper, he's an extremely nuanced character! Albeit, I feel that Chris is too, but I also feel like Chris' story has been told many times before: a young military man finds out his mentor is evil, and dedicates his life to exposing and defeating that evil, becoming jaded and bitter along the way. Leon's story has also been told many times before, and could have arguably followed the same lines as Chris's, but there are a few key details that make Leon's stand out, making him more attractive to fans. The biggest one I can think of is that Leon was forced into government service against his will. Often in military stories, like Chris', the protagonist chooses to align with the entity they are working for, for better or worse. Leon, from the beginning, is a victim of coercion and manipulation. He works for the system because he wants to protect his loved ones, and has no other choice but to do so until the system is all he knows, making him a very sympathetic character. He's not just a man on a mission, but someone who has experienced real trauma and is being actively exploited. Not only this, but his story touches on the symptoms of that trauma like ptsd and alcoholism. He is meant to be the lost soldier.

I think the last thing that really makes Leon likable is his personality. He's incredibly compassionate-- he never puts himself first and is always striving to help others, even when he is in pain. He's also a complete dork. He's witty and charming, but not in the sweep you off your feet way but in the "You must be the big cheese" way. The fact that such an attractive male character would also be dorky and empathetic was a real hit with the shes/theys/gays. He's not your conventional action hero!

STAR TREK: PICARD: 3x06: "The Bounty": Agent Crusher?

Beware: Season 3 spoilers! If you have not watched the first six episodes of STAR TREK: PICARD season 3, get thee to your streaming device and watch! Then come back for some secret space police speculating. =)

Thesis: Jack is a sleeper agent of Section 31 and Beverly is his handler.

"MAYBE I WAS DOOMED BEFORE I WAS BORN."

Jack exhibited unusual abilities-slash-symptoms as a child, including sleeplessness and traumatic visions. Beverly realized that they manifested as a result of traits unknowingly inherited from his father, someone who was once assimilated into the Borg and made into potential consort for their Queen, who was consumed by and then released from the Nexus energy ribbon, who traveled back and forth in time and visited alternate realities. With those ingredients, who knows WHAT you're gonna get, right?

Specifically, it's the latent Borg collective communication and coordination abilities that Jack inherited from Jean-Loc that make him valuable to Vadic and the Starfleet Revenge Squad (my name for the team-up of baddies responsible for all of JL & the gang's woes in season 3).

A DEAL WITH THE DEVILS.

Beverly did what she could to treat her son's apparent symptoms, but with little success. Having cut herself off from Starfleet and her friends to protect and raise her son on her own, she didn't have access to legitimate resources that might have helped. However, Section 31 had been keeping tabs on JL and his associates and were well aware of her son and his health issues. They approached and offered to help Beverly help her son in exchange for their cooperation when called upon. Beverly and Jack would continue living their otherwise off-the-grid Galactic Doctors without Borders lives without any changes, but every once in a while, Section 31 would call on them to pick up or deliver something or someone, or provide assistance to other agents operating on the Federation fringe.

Beverly agrees and S31 gives her access to data and treatments that Beverly uses to relieve Jack's symptoms. S31 continues to supply her with materials and assistance with Jack's treatment as long as she continues to complete the missions they give her.

THE CRUSHER IDENTITY.

To better protect and equip the Crushers for space cloak and dagger work, when Section 31 offered to train him as a sleeper agent, young Jack agreed. This involved all manner of intelligence, weapons, and martial arts training, but psychically compartmentalized, thanks to unique tech and procedures available to Section 31 (visit Daystrom Station =). It also required that Jack's knowledge of S31 be erased.

An outline of the imagined steps…

Jack signs up for the S31 sleeper agent program. —

S31 partitions his mind to create Action Jack, who undergoes training. —

S31 modifies Jack's memory to forget that he works for S31 and is part of the sleeper agent program. —

S31 implants a trigger or triggers to activate and deactivate Action Jack when needed. He is automatically activated when Jack or Beverly is in mortal danger. —

31 trains Beverly to handle and monitor Jack and Action Jack's behavior and programming.

His "double agent" existence might be compared to those of characters in TOTAL RECALL, MOON KNIGHT, BOURNE IDENTITY, and SEVERANCE. I imagine two strong variations on how it could go, based on…

…what S31 wants. Action Jack is a separate persona, distinct from Jack, and programmed to follow orders as well as protect. Like Quaid in TOTAL RECALL, Grant/Spector in MOON KNIGHT, and Mark in SEVERANCE. —

…what we've seen. When in danger Jack enters a fugue state in which he can access his sleeper training on automatic, without a separate Action Jack persona. More like, but not identical to, Jason in BOURNE IDENTITY. Maybe measures taken by Dr. Mom have put a ding in "what S31 wants" resulting in this behavior, unintended by S31's programming?

TRUST NO ONE.

I believe Beverly and Jack's good standing with Section 31 changed a few months ago when Beverly realized that they wanted Jack for something more, something specific. Maybe at the same time 31 stopped or changed Jack's treatments, or, in going fugitive on 31, Beverly lost access to them, which has resulted in the return of Jack's spells and insomnia. She may also have learned that Section 31—or at least the cell or group that she and Jack have dealt with—are being run by Changelings. If she didn't know then, she certainly must realize it now. The Changelings, thru Section 31, have been tracking and programming/grooming Jack to play a very important role in their plan to cripple Starfleet, thanks to the abilities inherited from his father. Starfleet Revenge Squad's plan calls for Jack's will—compromised by S31's programming—to direct the currently latent hive mind collective that will emerge from the network of integrated Starfleet starships.

The visions of red vines and voices calling to Jack to "find us" and "connect us" are Starfleet ships calling for his help."Integration" has been achieved via the repurposing of Borg tech extracted from the Romulan Borg Artifact. Starfleet—under Revenge Squad's guidance—has turned their ship computers into entities resembling very simple Borg drones, sentient, but suppressed. The latent collective network among these drones is what enables integration, and Jack is naturally tuned into it.

ODDS & ENDS.

Some miscellaneous notes related to the above crazy talk…

This strategy for a Frontier Day attack seems like a perfect fit to me except for one thing—Borgnes and her Bjørg cooperative demonstrated the vulnerability in using Borg-derived tech in Starfleet ships when she overrode the Stargazer's systems at the anomaly rift in season 2. But perhaps the Revenge Squad's agents in Starfleet and Section 31 came up with a patch for that—an update that would prevent such an override by unfriendlies. Of course, it would be designed to identify Jack's techno-organic commands as friendly. —

I'm unclear on how much Jack remembers of Action Jack's activity, but it seems like none of it. He doesn't explicitly say anything about taking out the four Changelings who were ready to abduct him on the Titan, letting Shaw and Beverly discuss without adding anything. —

I think his visions are a combination of Action Jack programming bleeding into his waking life and messages he is picking up via Radio Free Borg. Each muddling the other somewhat. The red door might be an entrance to an S31 training location, and/or access to his memories of his Action Jack training and activities. Or maybe it's the gateway to Starfleet's version of Unimatrix Zero. —

Beverly uses Irumodic Syndrome as an explanation for any situations in which Jack's S31 programming "bleeds" through or is compromised by his actions in front of others or by leaving evidence.

I've still got more than a couple competing ideas about the Starfleet Revenge Squad and its motivations…

The Reman Viceroy is Vadic's boss. He's in it to bring down Starfleet (and Picard and friends) for cutting short the Reman rule of the Romulan empire and more than happy to ally with the Changelings to make it happen. He has delivered Romulan Artifact tech and research to the Changelings embedded in Starfleet to create the "integrated" fleet. (I originally hoped that there was another Thalaron doomsday device created in NEMESIS-times that was keyed to Shinzon's living DNA and that the Viceroy needed Jack alive to unlock or activate it, since Jean-Luc no longer lives in his naturally born body.) —

Species 8472 is framing the Changelings. They have updated their isomorphic tech to allow them to shapeshift at will, but without regular boosters, revert to "goo" in reversion. Altho 8472 came to a peaceful accord with Voyager, there were hawks as well as doves among 8472, and as far as we know, no follow-up diplomatic communications were opened. Starfleet is the only enemy who defeated 8472, so their plan is to have the Dominion do their dirty work for them. A crazy long-shot, I know, but man, how awesome would it be to have JL and friends uncover the frame-up and have 8472 vs. the Dominion? =) —

Rogue 8472s are working with—enslaved by?—the rogue Changelings. 8472's Federation simulation training and genetic modification skills have helped Changelings improve their mimicking capabilities, resulting in their meatier appearance. I'm not sure why 8472s would end up subservient to Changelings—I would prefer a straight-up team-up arrangement—but if it is Changelings and 8472s, I think they must be the ones chittering behind the masks. Maybe they are unable to return to fluidic space because of environmental damage? Struck with a preemptive S31 plague? Specifically sought out, captured, and suborned by the rogue Changelings? Maybe JL and friends can cure or free the 8472s and have them turn on the Changelings and Squad upper management to turn everything around? —

Would also be happy to see a Weyoun or Bashir's Mutant/Augment Squad running the evil show. =)

And of course, I am still all for any of my zany "What's up with Jack?" theories, too!

utter despair during early and emerging adulthood. The following synopsis wrought, impressed, crafted... within mine temple mount when yours truly long overstayed his welcome and wore out welcome mat at 324 Level Road (formerly Rural Delivery 2 - before expanse of hundred acre wood constituting Glen Elm tract became vinyl city), and lacked courage - analogous to cowardly lion epitomized in The Wizard of Oz to test mettle and live independently – abandoned said challenge rather remained domiciled with birth parents.

Indelible, permanent and unfading abysmal

damaging domestic dynamics

got indelibly etched in deep purple upon the memory banks of this erstwhile individual.

The general gist in the form of quick broad brush strokes of psychologically traumatizing recollection now follows.

I can attest to malevolent mean-spirited objections by my then father stayin' alive (Normandy Farms retirement community in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania) at date of forthwith original poetical draft

(still mourning of his wife,

i.e. mine late mother), whose passing did nothing to ameliorate severe emotional trauma in regard to mine

unkempt appearance grossly unacceptable attire,

Back in those inglorious bourne days, I poorly wore the mantle and staff of supposed maturity.

Lack of compliance and obeisance with regulations and rules of the Harris household brewed, festered and lied dormant during prepubescence.

The pressure and tension between maternal and paternal adult would rank as dysfunctional way before such psycho babble (barely audible above the babel between me mother and father) became je nais se quois in vogue.

Such venomous barrage and fusillade spewed forth from off parental tongues at an exponential rate and on a par to feeling the stinging cudgel of a horsewhip.

Out of fear and timidity,

I consequently and silently

absorbed cruel treatment.

Neither the eldest nor youngest sibling

bore witness against the

tender spirit of their only brother.

A façade as of statue conveniently adopted.

This embodiment ill served

to fend off onslaught of incessant anger.

Such a defense mechanism

offered miniscule protection

as I mentally (dumbly and mutely) dodged andforded

lobbed and rammed insults

and affected defiance

of endless threats

and hollow ultimatums.

No matter these bitter pills

of blaring character assassination,

denunciation, fulmination, incrimination,

and countless vociferous vocalizations,

I feigned to be stone

(temple pilot) deaf. Such self-repression

of emotional maelstroms

only caused seething internal ire

to invite intense anxiety

and unpredictable

debilitating panic attacks,

They (mom and dad,

neither parent still alive)

became further angered

and inflamed per my total oblivious stance.

This reaction added insult to injury. Deliverance per tough love lessons

amplified to the tune

of additional feats

at becoming excoriated, ranted

and raved against personal habits

and what appeared as mine

nonchalant indifference to pursue work.

Those involuntary, unrehearsed

and vicious family chats happened

to be replete with heavily exploding

verbal wrath and uncorked anger.

Dad, the nominal spokesperson

for unpleasant chest donned thumping trumpeting exclamations emphatically swore

all manner of vulgarity and demanded

from this insolent appearing

male offspring, whose passive demeanor

intimated immediate compliance.

Defiance and fatigue offered him

that predictable and usual blank stare

upon hearing the kind

and lenient sentence

to pack bags and GET OUT!

With the dreaded approach

of dire and sealed fate,

I anxiously experienced

a dramatic increase in apocalyptic suspense.

Deadlines came and went without incident.

What caused especial ire and wrath

to fester pertaining

to apparent ambivalence,

indifference and nonchalance

for me to take any job -

even shoveling horse manure!

My maternal grandfather

supposedly never paid much heed

to regular and steady employment

despite his skill as a tailor.

Hence my mother and three siblings

lived in destitution and poverty.

Behavior of yours truly triggered

her flashbacks scores of years earlier,

when she lived in squalor,

and felt forced to seek either

part or full time income,

where household members

lacked camaraderie and integration

as a healthy family unit.

The wraith of those

ghastly imprecations

still hound with infrequent

unwanted ghostly visitations

from thy dead mother. Anxiety and once

immobilizing panic attacks

the battle scars afflict

my psyche and interfere

with the ability to enjoy life, liberty and pursuit of happiness

According to the research paper, Doom 3 is not affected by the same id Tech 4 engine issues that allow customized versions for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Brink. Id Tech 4, better known as the Doom 3 engine, runs games such as Quake 4, Prey 2, Doom 3 and Brink. In ReVuln’s Game Engines: A 0-Day’s Tale, the researchers wrote, “Monday Night Combat is based on Unreal Engine 3, and like other games supporting the Steam platform, this game supports some custom Steam related commands via Unreal Engine Control channel.” It also looked at Homefront, The Haunted: Hells Reach and Sanctum, all of which do not use the standard Unreal Engine 3 protocol before exploring attacks on them. Games that run on the Unreal Engine 3 include titles like Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas and EndWar, Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy, Mortal Kombat, Mass Effect, Lost Planet 3, BioShock Infinite, and various Batman Arkham titles. “Any attacker can exploit them without any user interaction or additional requirements.” ReVuln even wrote cross-game zero-day exploits. “It’s a matter of how many other games share the same engine.” Some of ReVuln’s exploits go after the game servers and other go after game clients. ReVuln doesn’t report security holes to affected vendors instead the company “sells the newly discovered vulnerabilities to third-party companies and government agencies.” They warned that before you assume your game has no game engine, realize that every game, even PONG has a game engine. These vulnerabilities were not previously disclosed before the presentation at NoSuchCon, meaning there are no current patches for protection. The researchers found zero-day vulnerabilities to exploit game engines such as CryEngine 3, Unreal Engine 3, id Tech 4 and Hydrogen Engine. At NoSuchCon, they presented “Exploiting Game Engines For Fun & Profit”. “Thousands of potential attack vectors” in game engines, open the way to “millions of potential targets” aka players, explained ReVuln Security researchers Luigi Auriemma and Donato Ferrante. Can you explain a bit what exactly is the professions/titles of alderperson and cunningperson are? (don't know if these are correct gender neutral versions to call them, sorry if this isn't correct)

I mean, as far as I understand/remember, Alderperson seems a bit like a village elder/mayor?? And cunningperson is a doctor and a bit more (mentions of grimoire, knowledge of what cynn and uncup (don't have the exact letter on my keyboard)), are there more specific descriptions?

And in general, how does the world work? Who are people "in charge" and are the any (like monarchy or elected leaders)? Will we learn more about all this later?

Okay, so this'll be a long one, and purely focused on the world of Myrk Mire, not historical reality. If anyone would like a historical explanation, let me know, and I'll make a separate post.

Shouldn't be any real spoilers below, but if you want to read 100% fresh, perhaps avoid.

In the World of Myrk Mire

Aldermen (I'm treating the men suffix as the gender neutral pluralisation in the story)

They are domestic caretakers, they manage community funds and coffers, organise community building projects, oversee the collection of certain localised taxes, fines and dues. They are responsible for appointing peoples to positions of importance in times of crisis, such as new members of the Watch, or a temporary quartermaster for the communities stores.

To become an Aldermen, an individual must be nominated by three members of their community to whom they are not related by either blood or union (marriage). They must then receive a majority approval vote from the community as a whole.

There can never be an even number of Aldermen per settlement, and there must always be a minimum of three to avoid an even split in debates between them. They are paid from the community coffers, and there is no maximum term of service. However, an Aldermen seen to be incapable or unwilling to carry out their duties to the community can be ousted by either a majority vote from the other Aldermen, or by a majority vote from their community. The collective group of Aldermen are sometimes referred to as the Council.

A community member cannot be a part of an Aldermen's nomination more than once every seven years.

An Aldermen must be over the age of eighteen, and they must have held a steady job or be a part of a profession within their community for more than five years for them to receive a valid nomination.

Cunningfolk

Practitioners of cræft, what we today might call a form of magic. They are trained professionals, and yet they belong to no guild, they are literate, but those of the upper classes look down on their learning, they are cynn, and yet not everyone can become one.

Cunningfolk come with many specialisations. Some, like Erda Lynn specialise in healing, using plants, tokens and limited charms to tend to their patients. Some focus on finding things, searching for what is lost, and protecting what one day might become lost. Some tell fortunes, some catch thieves, some channel their talents into protection, while others turn towards harm.

Every Cunningfolk worth their title is in possession of a grimoire, a book handed down from teacher to apprentice that contains the knowledge of those that came before, and fresh pages so that more knowledge might be added by future hands.

They are part paid by the community coffers, supplementing their expenses so that the poorest might be afforded care in times of need. The rest of their wage comes from a charge measured against a person's personal income and ability to work. A child is charged nothing, no matter where they dwell or who their parents are. Any disputes over charges are passed to the Aldermen.

Because their services are supplemented for the poor, they are often seen as lower value practitioners than those of similar roles, who guarantee exclusivity by charging higher prices. Whether this is bourne out in the results or not. As such, they are not so frequently found in the richer wards of the cities, but you would be hard-pressed to find a lower ward or rural community without at least one.

I'm going to keep this under my hat for a little bit. More will be revealed in the story, and I'll reveal more that is not directly mentioned in the story as time goes on.

But I will give you this much, as it was in our reality, in the reality of the story the country is under a monarchical system, and the current head of state is a queen.

For the last 40 years, politicians, oil companies, environmentalists, and Indigenous peoples have clashed over whether or not the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)—the largest stretch of intact wilderness in the United States—should be opened up for drilling. Now, that battle is finally coming to a close, reports Joel K. Bourne, Jr. for National Geographic.

The ANWR is located within the Arctic Circle in the northeastern corner of Alaska. It is home to an abundance of wildlife like polar bears and caribou, which the region's Indigenous communities rely on and hold sacred. But billions of barrels of oil may lurk beneath the icy surface, making the refuge a target for oil companies and pro-industry politicians, reports Emily Holden for the Guardian.

"If you can’t draw a line at the tundra and keep this one area of the Arctic off limits, then the question is, where can you draw the line and what protected part or wildlife refuge in the United States will remain off limits?" Adam Kolton, the executive director of the environmentalist Alaska Wilderness League, tells the Guardian.

President-elect Joe Biden has announced that he will protect the refuge from exploitation, and the Trump Administration has been racing to seal the deal and auction off parts of the refuge before the end of Trump's term on January 20, reports Andy McGlashen for Audubon...

As electronic devices saturate all corners of public and personal life, engineers are scrambling to find lightweight, mechanically stable, flexible, and easily manufactured materials that can shield humans from excessive electromagnetic radiation as well as prevent electronic devices from interfering with each other.

In a breakthrough report published in Advanced Materials—the top journal in the field— engineers at the University of California, Riverside describe a flexible film using a quasi-one-dimensional nanomaterial filler that combines excellent electromagnetic shielding with ease of manufacture.

"These novel films are promising for high-frequency communication technologies, which require electromagnetic interference shielding films that are flexible, lightweight, corrosion resistant, inexpensive, and electrically insulating," said senior author Alexander A. Balandin, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC Riverside's Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. "They couple strongly to high-frequency radiofrequency radiation while remaining electrically insulating in direct current measurements."
