by the pricking of my thumbs, Izuna & Shikako, something about divinity and debts? Shikako inadvertently saves his life and he believes he has a new mission in life to serve the random goddess who spared his life?

Okay, here’s the thing anon, you KNOW I love burgeoning young god, divine shenanigans with Shikako. You KNOW this and are PLAYING WITH MY HEART!

But I think, given the way Izuna days and how critical he/his death are in the lingering resentment/tensions between the Uchiha and Senju, that IF Shikako is going to save his life, it wouldn’t be inadvertently. Or, the closest to “inadvertently” would be if she doesn’t realize WHOSE life she is specifically saving.

Like, here’s what I’m picturing in my head:

Tobirama does a near-fatal blow against Izuna. At this point in history, the only people who COULD heal him are Senju.

I don’t know how swiftly the battlefield is emptied, or if Madara was also in that same fight, but there might be a window of time in which no one but the (presumed) dead are on the battlefield. If, in that window, Shikako senses that one of the bodies is not dead YET then she would go in and heal said body.

When Izuna opens his eyes after being certain he was dead, the first thing he sees is the face of a goddess. His Sharingan evolves.

Izuna is the first Uchiha (in this world, at least) to gain the Shikabane-hime and Gelel techniques.

If he has anything to say about it, he will not be the last.

Then it gets into, like, sort of silly shenanigans in which Izuna is earnestly preaching about the goddess he serves who brought him back to life, and Shikako is just like. Pls, no. Pls don’t. Pls. I don’t want that. (Izuna has better persuasion checks than Shikako. Though to be fair, her DC is much higher than his)

At some point, I guess she just leans into it and is like. I MIGHT AS WELL MAKE SURE KONOHA IS BUILT PROPERLY INSTEAD OF IT BEING FULL OF SECRETS AND TENSIONS AND TRAPS THAT BITE EVERYONE IN THE ASS DECADES LATER

… I wonder what the Shikabane-hime and Gelel techniques are…

This does then get into, like… and it sucks that this is the way it’s phrased, but it literally is this: Church vs State in which Izuna is leader of the Church of Shikabane-hime and Tobirama is doing most of the legislative/administrative work for State while his brother is charismatically Hokage-ing it up elsewhere.

And, like, Tobirama is Shikako’s favorite and he is a fuinjutsu master and he is doing SO MUCH WORK FOR THE SAKE OF KONOHA, EVEN IF SOMETIMES IT HAS TERRIBLE REPERCUSSIONS IF THE WRONG PERSON TAKES HOLD OF CERTAIN ORGANIZATIONS. And she also wants to assert, again, that she is not a goddess.

Unfortunately, her status as a divine being IS the only thing Izuna and Tobirama agree on. Tobirama just doesn’t think the Church of Shikabane-hime needs it’s own Vatican-style independent district within Konoha.

“Of course the temple will be central to the design of the village,” Tobirama says, a rough sketch of what buildings need to be prioritized on top of a survey map of the land that would one day become Konoha. He says it so matter of factly that Shikako almost misses it. “What?” Shikako asks, confused. “Of course it must be the center of the village,” Izuna snaps, even though they are literally in agreement. “It must also be the tallest building in the village.” “What?” Shikako asks, concerned. “Of course,” Tobirama retorts even though, again, they are literally in agreement.

Like… Tobirama does totally believe Shikako is a goddess. So many of his techniques are god adjacent (Thunder God—both sword and Hiraishin—and then the Edo Tensei/summoning shinigami maybe) that he doesn’t mind that. He just thinks that Izuna shouldn’t be so cocky just because he saw her first and got a cool new technique because of his cheating eyes while Tobirama has to do MATH and figure out how to bend the laws of the universe via fuinjutsu in order to get a Shikabane-hime technique. It’s not fair.

Also, Konoha LITERALLY having a goddess bless/guide the creation of their village is VERY POWERFUL. So giving Izuna a separate district for the Church of Shikabane-hime instead of incorporating Shikabane-hime into Konoha's very foundations does make that good PR a little less powerful.

I’m not saying Konoha becomes a holy city. But… like… maybe?

Miss Marple Literary Universe and the Tommy and Tuppence Literary Universe are one and the same!!

I don't know if anyones talked about this before but in Sleeping Murder, when Gwenda and Giles visit a sanatorium (aka "a mental home"), there's "a very charming old lady[...]holding a glass of milk". Her first line, spoken to Gwenda, is "Is it your poor child, my dear?". She mentions that the clock is "always at half past ten", and that something is "behind the fireplace". Her name is never mentioned and the entire interaction is less than half a page long. And thats the entirety of this character... in this Miss Marple story.

In the Tommy and Tuppence novel By the Pricking of My Thumbs, there's an old lady called Mrs. Lancaster in a nursing home whose first scene involves her love for milk, asking Tuppence "was it your poor child?", mentioning that the time is always "ten past eleven", and that something is "behind the fireplace".

By the Pricking of My Thumbs is set sometime in the late 1940s to the early 1950s according to Wikipedia, and Mrs. Lancaster was put in a nursing home roughly 20 years before that. Sleeping Murder, though published in 1976, is set in ~1944 (source: my dubious math based on a wedding certificate and backed up by wikipedia lol). So the timeline makes sense: if Mrs. Lancaster was originally put in a nursing home in ~1930, she could definitely have been in Sleeping Murder.

It's safe to say that it was the same person in both books. Which is wild to me because I often wonder if all these different Agatha Christie stories are happening in the same literary universe? Now I know at least that Miss Marple and Tommy & Tuppence are running around in the same world sniffing around a bunch of crimes.

Tobirama matter of factly planning a temple of the Shikabane-hime in the middle of Konoha is SENDING me oh my god?? Is Shikako still born to Shikako and Yoshino in this universe? How does everyone react to maybe having a mortal incarnation of their patron deity growing up before their eyes? Wait does Shikabane-hime create the Garden during the Founding era. Is she also worshipped in Sand?? And not to hijack other anon’s prompt but the full saying is “by the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes” so.. Jashin? Does Konoha have beef with Yugakure in this world? I LOVE THIS AU AAHH

First of all, Tobirama is a very clever lad: if a goddess is going to support their village built on the shakiest network of treaties and alliances, then he's going to take that support and use it as a foundation because otherwise all they have to go on is his older brother's charisma and that's NOT going to cut it long term. Also, he really is quite jealous that all Izuna had to do was look at Shikabane-hime to get a cool technique while he has to actually go through the scientific method WHILE ALSO DESIGNING THE VILLAGE.

I think Shikako looks enough like Yoshino that in this universe, they think it's the other way around--that Yoshino is, if not a mortal incarnation of their patron deity (because MAYBE Shikako is immortal in this universe due to the massive amounts of earnest worship actually working to make her a goddess even if she wasn't actually one in the beginning) then some kind of... goddess blessed? Like... this Konoha is so off the rails that there may be a separate order of priest/priestess-nin and Yoshino would be recruited for that.

And, like, I do like the Shikaku and Yoshino's love story, and it would be very sad if they didn't get together, so it's not that the priests/priestesses of the Shikabane-hime CAN'T fall in love and have families (and also, because Shikako is just like. Hey. As long as everyone involved is a consenting adult, the genders of said parties does not matter. Hooray marriage equality decades earlier)

Anyway, then if they do still have child Shikako, it could be a very... !!!! ... A Chosen One!!!! And then, THIS Shikako would be the "she who has divine right" version of Hokage!Shikako from my Hail To The Queen series... but that's maybe getting too self-referential?

I do think Shikabane-hime and Gelel create the Garden during the Founding era--because her arriving in each universe post-Split makes the Garden, if it hasn't already been made--so I would think that, yes, a version of her is also worshiped in Sand. But if she didn't stick around to make contact with the shinobi who would become the founders of Sand, they may know her by a different name? Like, in Land of Wind she is Gelel but in Land of Fire she is Shikabane-hime and it becomes a matter of, like, denominational differences.

Alternatively, rather than the Kazekage clan being called "Sabaku no" (of the Desert) perhaps they are called "Yokuchi no" (of the Oasis)? But I suppose that depends how early on in the timeline she is for Sand.

And finally… IS THAT WHERE THAT PHRASE COMES FROM? Oh my god, I'm so bad at identifying when prompts are references to things. It just goes right over my head T_T

I don't think Yugakure even exists long enough for Konoha to have beef with them. If one of Shikabane-hime/Gelel's early "miracles" DOESN'T include a divine smack down of Jashin, possibly erasing Yugakure--or possibly the whole of Land of Hot Water--from the map via volcano (I mean, hot springs are usually because of geothermals, and if she can make an earthquake she can probably make a volcanic eruption) then I don't know what counts as a miracle.

After writing my last post, I started having Thoughts about By the Pricking of My Thumbs and now I want to know what everyone else thinks.

Obviously, spoilers under the cut. Hopefully it should still be coherent in case you aren't planning on reading the book.

By the Pricking of My Thumbs is a Tommy and Tuppence novel. The titular duo visit Tommy's aunt in a nursing home, where Tuppence meets a Mrs Lancaster, who later mysteriously disappears. Tuppence searches for her for a couple of weeks until she finds her and then we learn the circumstances of Mrs Lancaster's past.

Roughly twenty years before the events of By the Pricking of My Thumbs, "Mrs. Lancaster" was starting to be suspected by the police for all these child murders that were happening at that time. (Because she was guilty lmao.) Her motive was that she was infertile after an abortion she had had when she was a teenager and she felt so guilty about it that she murdered a bunch of young kids to keep her dead child company in heaven (I'm not even going to comment on this).

Instead of handing her over to the police, her husband faked her death and sent her to a nursing home so she wouldn't have any interaction with children. He changed her name and told the nursing home staff that she had delusions sometimes to cover for any weirdness.

Except sometimes people at the nursing home would realize that she was the killer (or sometimes she *thought* people knew she was the killer) so she would poison them, usually with milk. Once this happened, her husband would just pack up her stuff and send her to another nursing home.

At no point did her husband consider that his solution of sticking his wife into a series of nursing homes and hoping that this time she wouldn't kill anyone was not working out (come on, he puts his wife in a nursing home to get her to stop killing kids and then she starts killing adults?? and he *doesn't* at least try to change his strategy??? What is wrong with him??? There's so much poor judgement being demonstrated by this guy and somehow the narrative tries to convince us to sympathize with him. Seriously what the hell)

Anyway, luckily the husband comes to his senses after twenty years of this ridiculous lifestyle, though only after his wife tries to STAB Tuppence. (Because apparently poison in milk was fine but violence was absolutely not allowed.) So he gets his wife to drink the same poisoned milk and she dies and that's the end of that, somehow. And Tuppence just kinda accepts that the mystery is over and goes home.

So uh. What's up with that??
