Discuss. Pokeani traveling companion nightmare blunt rotation options. Long post under cut, I put way too much thought into this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Detailed thoughts under cut.
Faba. Look, I never watched all of SM so I can't speak for his anime counterpart, but going off of gameverse Faba, there is zero way that adding him to ANYTHING will improve it. I feel like I don't need to explain this one.
Tumblr media
Nicholai. He's a furry (not a negative) who dresses as pokemon while trying to catch them (that's the negative). He also refuses to call shorts anything but knickerbockers. Traveling with him means you'll be hearing about knickerbockers and scaring off pokemon with giant zigzagoon costumes before you can even catch pokemon.
Tumblr media
Baron Alberto. You get to decide if he's a lickilicky or not. I feel like I don't need to explain this one much, either. Just watch the darkrai movie.
Tumblr media
Brandon. Okay, look. On one hand, you can travel with him and just fly places in the Battle Pyramid (which flies, by the way). On the other hand, he might yell at you ("NOOOOOOO") and you might have to make occasional pit stops to haunted ruins where kids get posessed by the king of pokelantis. You also might get crushed by a Regirock in his presence. But hey, you'll have an uber.
Tumblr media
Butler. Diane will not be there to travel with you guys, which I think turns Butler from a powerful companion to a cringefail magician without his wife to keep him in check. Diane needs a raise. You might get absorbed by Meta Groudon if you choose to travel with him. However, if you have beef with Team Magma, he'll be ready to prove himself to them. This could be either a pro or a con depending on how he goes about this. Historically it has been a... decently large con.
Tumblr media
Brianna. Look. I could make her worse. I could fix her. I could make her an actual character, but it's honestly funnier to just keep her the exact same. She's probably a largely normal, nice girl outside of her Brianna-ness, but if you choose to travel with her then Drew will be there too so you have to watch her Brianna all over the place. Also, this means traveling with Drew, which could go very many different ways. He himself barely escaped this list, if only due to personal bias. This one's a real coin flip. On one hand, she (probably) won't get you killed like Butler or Brandon might. On the other hand, Brianna. (/affectionate. I love Brianna. Something's wrong with her <3.) Safer bet but also has potential to be an incredibly annoying, cringeworthy bet that gets you stuck watching and subsequently dealing with tween relationship drama.
Tumblr media
Charon. Another self-explanatory one I think.
Tumblr media
Seymour (clefairy guy). Look, this guy's just annoying to me. I don't have any concrete reasons to have him here, other than the fact that he annoys me personally.
Tumblr media
Anime Bill. He just creeps me out. That's all.
Tumblr media
Kenny. So, look. I won't be too harsh on Kenny here, most of my Kenny hate is a joke (I don't actually hate him but hating on him is something of a meme with my friends), but I'm also not sure he'd be my first choice of a travelling companion. He's kind of whiny and likes to get a rise out of people. He's a petty and largely joking addition but also, he could be pretty annoying. I could fix him though.
Tumblr media
Morrison. Loud. Likes sandwiches. Largely forgotten by the fandom because nobody watches Hoenn/AG for anything but the coordinators or battle frontier brains. He's mostly on this list for being loud.
Tumblr media
Tommy. Yeah.
Tumblr media
Hunter J. Also... yeah. Have fun getting arrested for associating with a criminal. I'm sure some of y'all would risk it all for her, though 👏
Tumblr media
Harley. Even if you're on his good side, whatever that side may be, you're still going to have to be around his Harley-ness, and there's no guarantee that you won't be called upon to help him ruin the life of a ten year old. He gets a gif instead of a plain image. 80/20 chance you end up in his burn book (a canonical thing that he owns).
Tumblr media
Roderick. Again, nothing WRONG with him per se, but he's an old guy who lived on an island with wynaut for 40something years, and his only confirmed pokemon is a bellsprout iirc. Roderick also just kind of watched a couple ten year olds presumably die and he seemed disproportionately chill about it, so there's no guarantee he'll be much help in an emergency. If not for May, Drew would have drowned because Roderick was not much help. Go watch Who What When Where Wynaut. Also, he's Paul's grandfather. Not canonically, but... trust me. He does have a boat, though. So that's cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sid. Actually, there's nothing wrong with Sid other than not respecting personal space much and not being able to tell when someone's not interested. Go watch Destiny Deoxys, by the way. Fun movie THAT I COULD FIX DEAR GOD LET ME FIX IT. If you don't know my issues here then send me an anon and I swear to god I'll get into it, I always have this rant locked and loaded. EDIT: Sid is also now on this list because his google images was a weird adventure I don't wish to go on again. I got this image and no others. RIP anyone who tries to look up images for any pokemon anime character ever.
Tumblr media
Zero. Weird emo with professor/father figure issues (???) or just issues in general, honestly. Really wants Giratina's power. Invented Siri. Wears a onesie. Failed star wars villain.
Tumblr media
Dr. Yung. Did anyone even watch the mirage island special? I did. I still don't know what happened in it. Those 30 minutes of my life are a nonexistent blur. Something about Mew and Mewtwo, idfk. Traveling with him will get you into some shit, but it'll be incredibly forgettable shit that the fandom largely is unaware of. He's also evil, by the way, but kind of looks like a sad wet cat when he's not in evil mode.
Tumblr media
Kevin. He's just kind of boring. His sister's way cooler. He's just Kevin. When I looked him up for images, the fourth image was a really buff, bipedal bidoof, which tells you about Kevin, I think.
Tumblr media
Greta. Fire. Explosions. G r e t a .

Elevated Railways - Ch 6
Ingo has been in Hisui for two years when two children fall from the sky - with wings like his. Did they come from the same place he did?
Word Count: ~1500
The moment they landed, they were greeted by a frantic Noble. Sneasler watched them from a distance and they could hear her cries as they each touched down on the rock face before she began checking all of them over, making deep grunts and chirps of concern. “Lady Sneasler, we are all alright, I promise. The sky has done nothing to us as of yet,” Ingo soothed as she checked him over for signs of injury. She met his eyes and cocked her head, her eyes filled with worry as she grunted, “Sneas..”
Ingo patted her arm. “I assure you we are all alright. We are taking some time to refuel and take a pitstop.” Sneasler padded over to the twins, picking each of them up in her arms, making their wings flap in surprise as she held them. She began to walk with them in her arms, much to their surprise.
“Sneasler we can walk!”
“Yeah, I promise we’re fine, the worst thing is the bruise!”
“Snea,” she huffed in a tone that called for no more complaint. She held them like two kits as she led the way to her cave. Ingo made sure to reroute and grab some medicines and preening oil from his tent before they made it there. Once inside her den, she set the two children down on her nest. Her latest litter of Sneasel were still incredibly tiny, barely just hatched from the egg, and they were mewling beside them. Akari openly gasped at them.
“Oh my goodness, they’re so cute, look at them.” She bent down and stroked one, making its small head wobble up and sniff around. “They’re so soft!”
Ingo sat with them, picking two of them up. “I have been with them daily since they hatched. Sneasler is doing a wonderful job of caring for them. There are six in this litter. I suspect she brought us here because no one but Irida knows where this is, am I correct, my Lady?”
“Snea!” Yes.
“Allow me to check your cheek, Rei. Where did you fall from? Were you flying?” Ingo reached out to the boy’s cheek. He allowed the man to check it over, feeling for anything broken and looking for scratches.
“No, we were running through the Fieldlands and I tumbled down a slope I didn’t see. I’m pretty sure I only bruised this cheek, but I need to check my outer feathers and make sure they aren’t broken.”
Ingo nodded, satisfied. “Perhaps I can preen you and you can tell me about Lord Avalugg? I have not seen you both since prior to his frenzy,” he suggested to the kids. They both nodded as Rei turned around, spreading his now-shrunken wings for Ingo to see. There were some feathers out of place, but thankfully it did not seem that any were broken or gone. Sneasler announced her leave to go take care of her duties. Ingo wished her well.
They each talked about how it was to meet and quell the largest Pokemon Noble. And how funny it was to meet Lord Braviary, known for flying passengers around. They had not made their flight practice known to others out of fear that someone would make the connection between them spending time with Ingo and them learning to control their newfound wings. Ingo was oddly touched by this. He moved on to do Akari as he finished Rei’s wings. Hers were in slightly better shape. They moved on to talk about other Pokemon they had seen and caught in Hisui while they were absent.
“And then yesterday just before the whole thing with the sky, we finally finished the entry for Lickilicky. There’s an alpha over in the Mirelands up by the ruins and- wait, Uncle Ingo, when was the last time you preened?” Akari paused mid-ramble as she looked at his wings. Admittedly, they were a little haggard and unkempt, partly due to his frantic flight earlier and partly due to the fact that Machamp had just evolved and did not yet know its own strength.
“It has been a couple days. Machamp evolved and has not yet learned how to control itself with my feathers. It accidentally plucks them because it is too strong. None of my other Pokemon are good at preening, as they do not have fingers.”
“Let us preen you!” Rei said, his eyes shining. “We can reach all the spots you can’t!” Akari nodded vigorously, her wings fluttering with excitement in Ingo’s hands.
“Give me a moment to finish Akari, then I will let you preen me.” Ingo hummed to himself as he finished the last of Akari’s wings, giving her a pat on the shoulder. “Done. Now you may do mine.”
The twins moved to the back of Ingo, who stretched his wings out for them. Their small hands moved steadily through his feathers, getting close to his shoulder blades and around the center of his back. It was a different feeling to Machoke doing it, as their hands were smaller and more precise. Ingo guided them verbally around where he felt the feathers should fall, though he was pleasantly surprised to find that they could largely figure it out on their own.
One of the pairs stopped and Ingo heard Akari take a fast breath. “Akari? Are you alright?”
“B-b-blood…”
Ingo kept his voice steady. “Alright, look at the problem. Is it a scratch? A broken feather?”
He heard Rei shuffle over. “It looks like a broken pin feather.”
“Alright. Do you remember what to do about it?”
“We have to pull it, right?” Rei asked.
“Bravo, yes. Place your thumb on the end of it where it sprouts, and use the other hand to grip it firmly. Once you are ready, tug it out as hard as you can. Do not worry about hurting me. I will be alright.”
“Okay.” Ingo felt some moving and a pinch where the broken feather was. “Are you ready, Uncle Ingo?”
“Full speed ahead, Rei.”
“Okay. Uh. One. Two. Three.-” Ingo felt a yank, as if someone had just ripped a small clump of hair out of his head. He sucked in a soft breath as he felt the boy’s thumb massaging the spot, like he had done to him that first night. “I got it! Are you okay?”
“I am quite alright. Bravo, Rei! Now if you will, ensure to put some disinfectant on it so that it can heal properly. A new feather should sprout there soon.” He heard more shuffling as something cool was pressed into the sore spot, making it sting a little. “Excellent, you two. As soon as you are done, I recommend we rest our engines for the night. Tomorrow will be a long day.”
“Okay, Uncle Ingo.”
“Okay!”
The rest of the preening went off without a hitch. Ingo bundled the pair up in warm blankets and laid them on Sneasler’s nest, at her insistence. “Uncle Ingo, aren’t you going to join us?” Akari piped up, yawning. Ingo smoothed her hair down.
“I will shortly. I will be right here in the meantime, though, do not worry. Rest well.”
The twins cuddled up together and fell asleep, their foreheads touching. Ingo sat up, cross-legged, by their heads, smoothing down their hair as he watched for his Lady. He wanted to ensure that she returned safely, especially with the sky the way it was. He continued carding his hands through his fletchling’s hair as he waited. His mind wandered.
The man in white, who he knew was his twin. The children had been trying to help him unravel his memories. He knew that pre-Hisui, he did not have wings. Neither did they. The wings must be a by-product of traveling through time, somehow. He knew he came from a city. He knew he had an identical twin brother. He knew he worked around the general public a lot, and the children reminded him what a train was. He worked with those! Somehow. He also loved Pokemon battles and was well-versed in them, so they think he may have been some type of battle facility boss or leader. He had no idea, though something about that sounded correct. He knew his own name. He did not know Hisui in the slightest, though the twins said his accent was more similar to Galarian. He didn't think he was from Galar. But who was he to say?
"Sneas?" came from the entrance to the cave.
Ingo grunted in response. He did not want to speak and accidentally wake the children. The younger Sneasel had begun piling on the sleeping humans already, craving their warmth. Sneasler entered the den, taking a look at the scene before her. She slung her basket off her back, revealing a stash of berries that she had procured. Ingo nodded. Sneasler pointed at him with one claw as she sat down, then at the twins. "Snea."
Ingo nodded and laid down beside them, making sure not to disturb the young Sneasel. He allowed his eyes to close.

Do you have headcanons about Conway? If yes, then do you think he ever traveled outside of Sinnoh? He passes the impression that he could become some sort of Gary, but wouldn't give up in fighting or Winning the league.
I do have some! You can find a handful of them here (even though it's a pretty old tag that hasn't been updated in five years, oops).
I'm fairly sure he did travel outside of Sinnoh at some point! Or, at least, I'd like to think he did. After all, his team is formed by Pokémon that were discovered in other regions:
Slowking is a Johto Pokémon (while Slowpoke was discovered in Kanto).
Shuckle and Heracross are also native to Johto.
The entire Aggron line are Hoenn Pokémon.
Dusknoir is a Sinnoh Pokémon. However, we don't know if he caught it as a Duskull/Dusclops in Hoenn or if it's the same Dusknoir that saved his life in DP090. I personally like the idea of it being the same Dusknoir that saved him. :>
Lickilicky is also a Sinnoh Pokémon (while Lickitung is a Kanto one).
Of course, them being Pokémon discovered in other regions doesn't necessarily mean they can't be found in Sinnoh at all, but it's worth noting that none of his Pokémon team's first stages are Pokémon discovered in Sinnoh. In fact, in the DPPt games, you can only catch three of his team members, if I remember correctly.
Since half of his team are Generation II Pokémon, I like the idea of him starting his journey in Johto. Adding to this is the fact that Conway is based on a Super Nerd, a Trainer class that only existed in Generation I, Generation II, and their respective remakes and adaptations. Plus, considering that HeartGold and SoulSilver came out during Generation IV, it wouldn't be far-fetched to think that the writers intentionally made him a Super Nerd with some Johto Pokémon as a way to promote the then new games.
Or maybe I'm giving it too much thought, who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's also natural for Trainers to move on to other regions once they're done exploring one and collecting all the Gym badges, so I assume Conway would be no exception and would continue to travel the world after the Sinnoh League. He could definitely pull a Gary and find a new passion/s along the way too, though that doesn't mean he'd have to stop training/traveling. As we've seen with characters like Nando, it's totally doable, you just have to be able to manage your time.
On an unrelated note, I also like to think Conway's had Slowking since way before he started his journey. It'd justify why they're so in-sync, since sometimes Pokémon and Trainers become very similar in personality after spending a long time together and forming a stronger bond. Just imagine a little nerdy kid with glasses that are too big for his face, carrying around a sleepy Slowpoke in his arms because it's too slow to keep up with its human. Wouldn't that be adorable!?

So, we know the gym leaders' fears, but do any of them fear a certain Pokémon or type? E.g, I think Leon would definitely fear Eternatus after what happened, Piers would probably strongly dislike/fear bug types (being one of the dark types weaknesses) and I can picture Raihan having an irrational fear of Wooloo for some reason.
I wouldn’t say Milo fears bug types, but he definitely does not like them. Bad for the crops. He does fear poison types, those things could melt you in a matter of minutes.
Nessa doesn’t fear a specific type, but she does not like the snake pokemon. They have no legs and still move around on the ground. It’s just not right.
Kabu has always had an aversion to steel types. They’re sharp and usually very big. They’re dangerous (and that’s coming from a fire type professional) and unpredictable. He tries not to get too close to them. Corvitaxis are a struggle.
Bea doesn’t fear anything. But, uh, you know, Lickitung and Lickilicky. She’s glad there are none of them in Galar because they’re bizarre and strange. They’re just pink fleshy things with huge tongues. Weird.
Allister is a ghost type specialist, but it’s Binacle that scares him. He watches a horror movie where hands came out of the walls and stuff and it’s all he can think of when he sees them. He just “they’re here to drag me into the void!!!” and runs. Hopefully he grows out of it.
Opal doesn’t mind most pokemon. She can even handle Impidimp and its evolutions. She does, however, strongly dislike poison types. They’re dirty and disgusting and she can’t help but feel nauseous when she sees the mess of a trail they make.
Gordie has a strong aversion to fire types. He’s seen some of Kabu’s scars and doesn’t know if he could handle burns like that. It’s so scary, and while Kabu is like family, he’s his least favorite to battle. He gets scared when he has to get near a fire type. He’s getting over it.
Melony dislikes rock types. This was before Gordie decided to be a rock trainer, but it certainly got worse. They’re dangerous and lack any of the finesse she loves in ice types. It’s part of the reason she was so opposed to Gordie’s decision. If he had chosen any other type, it wouldn’t have been so bad.
Piers disliked bug types a lot. They’re creepy. However, he plays it off by saying “bug types are shit.” He’s also afraid of Morpeko, but that only came after he got to know Marnie’s. And that fear is completely rational.
Raihan is irrationally afraid of Wooloo and Dubwool. For some reason, he finds them really creepy. He tries to stand Hop’s though. He’s getting over it. He absolutely hates fairy types, though. They just seem... off. Like a doll that should be cute but gives you the chills anyway. He likes Opal, but her pokemon are creepy.
Leon loves all pokemon. Except for Eternatus. He got really hurt and slightly traumatized from that experience. He could have died. And he’s uneasy around Zacian and Zamazenta, since in his mind, he correlates them with the Eternatus incident. He also has an aversion to Copperajahs now, too, since he was used to seeing Rose’s a lot and he also thinks of Eternatus when he sees one. He’s trying his best to move on and give those pokemon the love from him they deserve. He knows rationally that they’re harmless.
It’s safe to say that everyone fears Eternatus, but Leon’s fear is much worse.

Michael in the Mainstream: Pokemon Generation I & II
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pokemon is one of the biggest media franchises on the planet since 1996, and while it’s never exactly hit the same highs as it did back in the 90s, the franchise has been going strong for over two decades regardless. So, in honor of the latest entries in the franchise, I decided to take a look back at the old generations and look at what worked and what didn’t about them, though obviously in my own style. And what better place to start than the original two generations, Generations I and II?
Let’s start with Generation I, which includes the three games that started it all – Red, Blue, and Yellow, though back in the franchise’s homeland of Japan they had Green instead of Blue (hence why we got FireRed and LeafGreen, but no WaterBlue). These are the games that launched the franchise into the stratosphere of popularity, and for a long time they were held up as the gold standard of Pokemon games, attracting a die-hard base of “fans” known as Genwunners, who would bash anything outside of the first 151 Pokemon. Lately that sort of opinion has declined, though you still get the odd person here and there whining about how newer Pokemon designs look like Digimon, which indicates that the person saying that is unfamiliar with either franchise.
But what of the games themselves? What are they like? I have long expressed distaste for the Gen I games, mostly because of my hatred of Genwunners, but ultimately my opinions on the games are a lot more mixed. I do believe that Yellow is a genuinely good game and probably how the first generation should be experienced if you really want to go back to the old games, but my opinions on Red and Blue are a bit more mixed – but, shockingly, mostly positive.
You see, here’s the thing with Pokemon games – even at their worst, they’re still fun, and Red and Blue prove that. These are impressive games for their time that had the misfortune of aging far worse than a lot of their contemporaries, mostly due to the nature of the games themselves – any sort of franchise based on collecting and battling among groups of friends is going to need a lot of polish between releases, which will inevitably leave older games in the dust, especially when each generation after would add more and more Pokemon with each new generation. But even if they haven’t aged all too well, there’s still plenty of fun to be had here, though a lot of it is not in ways the creators intended.
Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first – the balance in this game is absolutely atrocious. There are some types that are just objectively better than others, some types are so scarce as to be utterly useless, some moves don’t work like they’re supposed to, some of the computers use moves they shouldn’t know… the game is a hot mess, to put it lightly. At points the games feel frustratingly unplayable, especially when you come up against Sabrina, the gym leader wielding the all-powerful type of Gen I, Psychic.
The more mixed parts of the game are the story and the beloved, exploitable glitches. The story here… well, there isn’t one. There’s sort of an excuse plot in place - you have to beat all the gyms, challenge the Elite Four, and battle your rival (who you can name whatever, but I’ll be referring to him by his canon name, Blue). Other than that, though? There’s not really any sort of overarching plot. You kind of just wander into situation after situation on your way to the next gym. Even the whole Team Rocket plot here is mostly just you beating them up because they prove to slightly inconvenience you at every turn. Unlike in later entries, where the player is roped into saving the world from destruction at the hands of all-powerful PokeGods. Here the plot is basically “Young boy accidentally foils the Mafia while on a walk with their pet.” It’s so hilariously simple it’s hard to totally hate it, and to be perfectly fair a lot of early RPGs had rather simplistic plots, and this was one of the first handheld RPGs, so I cut them a bit of slack here, especially seeing as we at least got Giovanni out of this.
The glitches are infamous and iconic, but even them I’m a bit mixed on. Like, I love Missingno as much as everyone else, but I think tat if you need to break a game this hard to have fun, it kind of ruins things. I feel the same way about the glitches as I do the Crissaegrim in Symphony of the Night sure, they’re cool, flashy, and powerful, but they make the game so pathetically easy from that point onwards it just isn’t that entertaining anymore.
Still, this game does excel in one area: character. There are a lot of great characters in this game, human and Pokemon. A lot of the gym leaders are absolutely iconic, and the Elite Four is mostly interesting, though I will say that they lack a lot of character compared to later Elite Fours (though he Gen III remakes ameliorated this problem). It’s pretty impressive how so much character was able to be crammed into these characters even though they are ostensibly just roadblocks on your way to the next gym.
Then there are the Pokemon. The designs in this generation are pretty simple, occasionally to a fault, but there is a reason for this: a lot of Pokemon are based on yokai or tsukumogami, both of which are pretty essential in Japanese folklore. Tsukumogami in particular are something the franchise seems to absolutely love, with the Voltorb and Magnemite lines being notable examples from this generation. Other Japanese folklore represented in this Generation include kitsune, which the Vulpix line is explicitly based on, kappas, which Golduck is inspired by, baku, which the Drowzee line represents, and so in. In fact, the entire concept of Pokemon is so entrenched in the concepts of yokai and Japanese spirits that it is endlessly amusing to see Westerners nitpicking the designs, ignoring the cultural meaning behind them. Pokemon have a variety of inspirations obviously, but the weirder you think a design is the more likely it is to have been based off of some sort of yokai.
I think the definitive Gen I experience is Yellow, which is inspired by the anime. You start off with Pikachu who follows behind you at all times, you can acquire all of the starters, the game overall feels more polished (but not overly so), and you get to fight Jessie and James. It’s a lot of fun, and it doesn’t heavily alter the story, instead adding a few neat little additions, something that would become common with third versions in the franchise. The Kanto games are a solid start to a franchise, but they definitely could have used a bit more work…
That’s where Generation II comes in.
Generation II honestly feels like what Generation I should have been like, leaving Red and Blue as the unpolished alpha, Yellow as the beta, and Gold and Silver as the full release. In fact, it kind of leaves the  second gen feeling a lot more like an expansion pack than anything else, but not in an obnoxious or bad way like a certain other game (COUGHOverwatch 2COUGH). These games are so much better in just about every conceivable way, it’s not even funny.
A lot of important series mainstays made their debut here. The biggest and best is probably the introduction of the Dark and Steel types, the latter of which really feels like it should have been in Generation 1 to begin with. Steel quickly established itself as a very defensive type, and Pokemon of that type are just naturally tough due to Steel resisting nearly every other type in the game, with it only being nerfed slightly once the games jumped to 3D. Dark on the other hand was extremely cool in concept, but a lot of the Pokemon of the type were not able to properly utilize their impressive movepools due to Dark being classified as a Special type and a lot of early Dark-types running with high physical stats.
Let me clarify real quick: prior to Generation IV, the type of the move determined whether it ran off of Physical or Special Attack, no matter how ludicrous it seemed. That means Dark moves like Bite and Fire moves like Blaze Kick ran off of the Special Attack stat despite almost always appearing on Pokemon that had much higher Physical Attack, leaving a lot of Dark-types in the dust until the Sinnoh games rolled along and balanced things. Still, this bump in usability did not stop Dark-types from being popular and beloved, with Pokemon like Umbreon, Sneasel, and Houndoom all debuting here in the land of Johto.
Speaking of new Pokemon, fewer were added this time around, only about 100, sort of fitting in with this game feeling like an expansion pack. A lot of the new Pokemon are odd and gimmicky, with strange creatures like Unown, Delibird, and Shuckle making their debut here, as well as the almighty Dunsparce. While time would be kind to some of these (Dunsparce and Shuckle in particular have gained niche uses and cult fandoms), other gimmicky Pokemon got left in the dust. Still, I do think having weird, gimmicky Pokemon adds some flavor to the world. If there’s one thing I am upset about, it’s some of the Pokemon that were cut from the game, revealed to the world in the prototype version of Gold and Silver that leaked online. We almst got a new Shellder evo that looked like Slowbro’s tail, as well as Pokemon like Lickilicky debuting two generations earlier (and with a far better design). Still, what we got is pretty impressive, and though I find Johto a tad bit vanilla, there are a lot of Pokemon I love in this generation.
Another great addition to the franchise is lore behind the Legendary Pokemon. Gen I did have a bit of lore in regards to Mew and Mewtwo if you chose to read all of the journals in Cinnabar Mansion, but the bird trio got nothing and sort of just felt like random bonus bosses than Pokemon really deserving the title of legends. In this game, every legend introduced feels legendary. Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Ho-Oh, and Lugia all have fascinating lore behind them, and while they don’t play a major part in the story or factor in to Team Rocket’s plans (save for Suicune in Crystal, who has its own subplot), it showed that even this early on they were working on making the legendaries feel bigger and more impressive to the point they deserved their title as legends.
Then of course there are the new additions to gameplay and collecting that helped really make the franchise shine. The introduction of held items is one of the most significant; now there were even more ways to improve your standing in a battle! Give your mon a berry, they’ll eat it when their health gets low! This feature would be expanded on in later games, but its start here introduced a whole new world of possibilities. There was also the splitting of the Special stat into Special Attack and Special Defense a choice that helped balance the games and not completely overpower the Psychic type. And speaking of, Type distribution was quite a bit better in these games, though the new types Steel and Dark as well as Ghost and Dragon were still fairly underutilized and rare.
Then there is the introduction of gender and breeding, which allowed players to get new Pokemon by leaving two Pokemon in the same egg group in a day care together. This not only allowed for the introduction of new baby Pokemon (which are largely useless and Pokedex filler if I’m being honest), but it gave the transforming blob of jello Ditto a new lease on life, as it could breed with absolutely ANYTHING, even some genderless Pokemon. Finally, we have the introduction of shiny Pokemon, Pokemon that had a different coloration than normal Pokemon and that almost surely existed to show off the power of the Game Boy Color. Back in Generation II, shinies were guaranteed to have perfect IVs of some sort or another to make their rarity more worthwhile, but this was scrapped after this gen. Still, there is nothing cooler than having that fabulous Pokemon with its incredible sparkle pop up while you’re roaming the wild, and nothing sadder than realizing you don’t have any balls to catch it.
The story here is also improved, which is a plus. A rarity for Pokemon games going forward, these games were true sequels to the originals, taking place a few years after the events of the Gen I games, and so the plot concerns the player getting roped in to not only stopping the remnants of Team Rocket trying to rise to power yet again, but also fighting off a mysterious rival named Silver, all while trying to complete the gym challenge. The stakes are a bit higher this time, but not overly so, and the plot definitely feels bigger and more important, with their being a sense of “I have to stop Team Rocket or something bad could happen” rather than “Ugh, these guys are blocking the way to the next gym, guess I better get rid of them.” And if that’s not enough, this has one of the more impressive post-games for the series… for its time. Much has been made of the late, great Satoru Iwata’s impressive cramming of the entirety of Kanto into the game, and you won’t hear me say that for the time these games came out what he did was impressive.
The thing is, this accomplishment has aged about as well as the games the Kanto region debuted in. Gen II’s version of Kanto has a very poor level curve, meaning you can basically steamroll through most of the gyms, and a lot of areas are blocked off, gone, or cut down. While it is cool to see all these places two years after the original games, it’s not nearly as fun when you’re crushing underleveled Pokemon and you can’t access Cerulean Cave or the legendary birds. When you finally acquire all the badges though, you get to head to Mt. Silver and make your way up to one of the definitive bonus bosses of the franchise – Red, the player character of the original games. He’s a pretty tough opponent, and the game seems to lean towards making Yellow the true canon game as Red has all three starters plus Pikachu,
There’s not much else to say, as there isn’t too much negative to say about the Johto region or the games. The definitive version is, of course, Crystal, as it has a bit of extra story and polish to it and even let you play as a girl for the first time, and though there are aspects that the remakes of these games would improve on, the Generation II games are actually extremely solid and a lot of fun to play to this day, even if they haven’t yet achieved optimal balance for Pokemon. At the very least, they’re a lot more fun and playable than the Gen I games.
It’s pretty undeniable that the first two generations put Pokemon on a pretty solid path of progression and started the franchise off with a bang. There was really nowhere to go from here but up, and boy oh boy did they ever go up from here.

Pokémon Black 2 Randomized Nuzlocke Run [Part 10]
Elite Four grind time.
With some time spent pushing rocks into holes, just in case I need to go places in the future.
Team:
Caspet (Gengar)
Nessy (Milotic)
Diego (Gardevoir)
Stormy (Metagross)
Vertex (Luxray)
Photon (Rayquaza)
So here we are, leveling up our team before our chaotic last stand, and that means... we’re in a new route. One more for the road.
Tumblr media
What will it be?
Tumblr media
It’s a Fire type!
Tumblr media
I’m a moron!
No, Diego, no.
...
FUCK I HAD A MASTER BALL I COULD HAVE USED.
WHY DOES MY BRAIN CONSISTENTLY GO TO THE “yeah there could be a type problem but I’m sure it’ll be fine,” ARENA WHEN I’M TRYING TO CATCH THINGS. YOUR OPTIMISM IS KILLING THIS TEAM. KILLING IT.
IT’S CAUGHT ANYWAY.
I GUESS THE LITTLE MURDERER WHO’S LIKELY TO BE PART OF THE TEAM GETS A NAME.
YOU’RE DAMIAN. IN ALL CAPS.
Tumblr media
I’m so sorry my optimism killed you, Diego.
I have a Dawn Stone now.
Maybe things would have gone better if I had it earlier.
I might be sorrier I have to grind something else. But I’m mostly just sorry.
-sigh-
Rest well, friend.
Now then.
Tumblr media
Hey there. You’re Serious and often doze off.
I guess I’ll train you now.
We’ll be back when the demon child is up to 60!
Or when I’m in his patch of grass again and cool, Sunflora and Manaphy. Mareep is in more common grass. As is Rhyhorn and Manectric. Ninjask in the water. Look, the wild one live longer. Braviary is occasionally here too, with Marill in the deep spots.
Heeeeey, DAMIAN made it to 60 without dying! Also without anyone else dying! Nifty! We’re throwing Caspet back in front, handing the Exp. Share to Photon for now, and just going to go through this Victory Road.
What I assume to be Victory Road. This part of the game blends together for me even worse than the rest.
Tumblr media
...Well, now I’m on it, so no matter!
Tumblr media
Wait. We had a planned thing?
Tumblr media
N, this is why there’s so much fanfic written about you. Thank you, friend. Even if it’s only because I remind you of your boyfriend from the last cartridge set.
What do I teach it to, though? It’s a physical Water attack. A very good one, but I don’t think any of my physical attackers can learn it. I might have to take something out of a box for it... In that case, I might as well also get something that can learn Cut. There are trees about.
Photon and Nessy are the only ones that can learn Waterfall. I don’t think I want it for either of them. To the nearest box!
Tumblr media
I don’t know if this is a way to a box, but this is really, really cool and I dig it.
Okay, do I have anything that can learn both Cut and Waterfall? Mayhaps? Or Fly?
No, this isn’t going to be that straightforward. Nessy and Caspet are in the box since they need exp least. Replacing them temporarily are Amuro the Charmander (Cut), and Winn the Whiscash (Waterfall and Surf).
Photon’s in the first slot, Exp. Share moves to Vertex for now.
There’s this maze of Cuttable trees and trainers out before Victory Road proper. I don’t really understand what this gen likes so much about random maze areas, but I think most Pokemon games are into that on some level. It’s just annoying right now because Sun and Moon spoiled me. HMs are obnoxious.
On a related note, Winn now knows Strength.
There are also now Kabutops everywhere.
Having gone through the maze, I’m going down Victory Road with Nessy back in the party and Amuro back in the box. Thanks for your service, bud. Where we’re going, we don’t need Cut. ...I hope.
Tumblr media
This gen’s needless drama makes me happy.
And the first pokemon of Victory Road is...!
Tumblr media
Hi there. You’re gen appropriate. What are you doing here.
Quick Ball for a quick catch, and your name’s Kansas now. Get in the box.
Other possibilities that can no longer be counted as such are Lickilicky, Psyduck, more Psyduck, Aggron, Spheal, Smeargle, Dragonite, Dewott, Starly, Zweilous, Trapinch, Marill, Swellow, Mismagius, Weavile, Genesect... there were a lot.
Throwing the Exp. Share at DAMIAN for the now.
Tumblr media
We’re secretly the same person.
The number of trainers on Victory Road who have history with Team Plasma one way or another is really satisfying. In this sequel game, the events of the game preceding it had an impact on NPCs. Delightful.
Also, I repeat my desire for NPCs to not be allowed to have things that have Sturdy. I hate Sturdy. It makes me sad. So do caves that need Flash to see in. Instead of teaching anything Flash, I’m going to stumble around in the dark. The dark that says this is probably an optional section.
I made my way to an outside!
Tumblr media
Hmmm.
Russell?
Tumblr media
Russell!
Fuck. Rival fights just when I’m really wanting to see a Pokemon Center are not my favorite thing. They are even less of my favorite thing when I have a  slot taken up by an HM slave.
!!!
Hey, this is the rival fight that starts with an Unfezant in this corridor!
It’s level 55, and Russell only has four pokemon, so this should be relatively okay. Bouffalant comes out as a result of Unfezant’s U-turn. Nessy deals with it, but is in the orange. Simisage is next, go DAMIAN. Samurott following, go Vertex. Samurott is level 57. Stormy goes in to finish the Unfezant since Stormy has a Quick Attack replacement.
And that’s the fight! Yay!
Pokemon Center?
Fine, I can take the Thunderbolt TM I guess.
Tumblr media
Geez, what happened in the past two years, huh?
Oki doki, I’m going to go back through Victory Road and check out all the things I didn’t want to before finding the health point on the way out. When I’m done with that, I’ll look at the resting levels and decide what I think.
Stormy with the Exp. Share for the moment.
Tumblr media
The heck.
Am I going to want to give something Flash?
Tumblr media
Randomizer is fun.
Tumblr media
Now then. What are you gonna do?
Tumblr media
Nothing. Well great.
That kind of leaves with one thing to do, doesn’t it.
Yeah.
Soooo.
Tumblr media
I think based on the levels I’ve been up against to get here, continuing to grind kind of defeats the spirit of the Nuzlocke. I also don’t have Fly, so I’m going to stick with what I have available here to construct team improvements.
To the TM page.
Nessy’s going to forget Twister for Ice Beam.
Photon’s going to... actually no.
DAMIAN’s ditching Crunch for Toxic just so someone knows it.
And that’s it for TMs that I could change up their movesets with.
Leftovers for Nessy, Magnet for Vertex, Wide Lens for Stormy, Charcoal for DAMIAN, Spell Tag for Caspet, and Razor Claw for Photon.
Going to spend most of my money on recovery items, and then. In we’ll go.
After giving Caspet all of my remaining Rare Candy. Caspet it level 69. Nice.
Tumblr media
I think Fighting dude is to the far right. He’s been a problem in the past, so I’m going to go ahead and try to get that out of the way. Stormy up front because while Photon might have Air Slash and STAB, all these things are likely to have Stone Edge. The worst of everything. Next to Sturdy.
Tumblr media
Yeehaw.
...Huh.
Well then.
So Marshal’s first pokemon is a level 56 Throh. At the risk of feeling very embarrassed in a few moments, I think I might be slightly overleveled for this. Uh. Stormy, use Zen Headbutt?
Bye Throh?
Mienshao is up next, and for that one I think I want to switch into Photon. Or do I. See, I can’t remember if Bug is super effective against Stormy or not. Steel clears up a lot of the Pyschic weaknesses, but I am not allowed to look things up, and gaaah.
Stormy can survive one hit of anything, probably. In Stormy stays.
One Zen Headbutt later, Stormy is also staying in to fight Conkeldurr. It’s level 58. It uses Bulk Up (yes, it lived. its berry even brought it back to orange!). Stormy uses Zen Headbutt. Conkeldurr is no more.
Next and last is Sawk. Let me guess. This is still the Sturdy version. It is. It uses Payback, which does a pathetic amount of damage. Stormy uses Bullet Punch to simplify the future, and Marshal Full Restores Sawk. Stormy uses Zen Headbutt.
Yay, I won.
...This is sincerely awkward. I thought they’d be in their 60s. And maybe they are for the second round, but I’ve spent so many hours in this gen that my plan is to call it after beating the Elite Four. So uh. This is my final battle.
To the Psychic room?
Tumblr media
I like how two years later, the Elite Four has agreed to stairs instead of moving spiral stairs.
Tumblr media
Caspet is up in front.
Caitlin sends out a level 56 Musharna. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Musharna faints. Caitlin sends in a level 56 Reuniclus. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Reuniclus faints. Caitlin sends in Sigilyph. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Sigilyph faints. Caitlin sends in a level 58 Gothitelle. Caspet uses Shadow Ball.
And that’s Caitlin.
Ghost girl next because I already have Caspet up front.
Tumblr media
Shauntal sends out a level 56 Cofagrigus. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. She’s about to send out a Golurk, and to keep from being too arrogant, I switch to Nessy. Nessy uses Surf. Bye Golurk. She sends out a Drifblim, I go back to Caspet. Caspet uses Shadow Ball. Nessy gets sent back in against a level 58 Chandelure. Nessy uses Surf.
Nessy’s level 67 now.
Three down.
Stormy, you can sit in front for this next one.
Tumblr media
Grimsley sends out his level 56 Liepard. It uses Fake Out. Then it uses Night Slash. Stormy is at 156 HP out of 192. Stormy uses Hammer Arm. Liepard faints. Nessy comes out to handle the Krookodile. It uses Earthquake. Nessy uses Surf. One is left standing.
Scrafty is next.
I don’t have anything I’m super comfortable having out against it, so I think I’m going to go for an odder pick and have Vertex fight it. If nothing else, yay Intimidate.
Vertex uses Spark. Scrafty uses Rock Tomb. Vertex’s Speed is lowered, but Scrafty’s down to half health. Vertex uses Spark. Ugh, a sliver of health left. Scrafty uses Rock Tomb again and Speed is lowered again. Grimsely is going to use a Full Restore, so I’m going to use Charge.
Scrafty uses Crunch.
Tumblr media
A moment of fear for Vertex. Yike.
Charged Spark takes out Scrafty, though.
Grimsley’s final pokemon is Bisharp. DAMIAN, this is your time.
DAMIAN uses Flamethrower. Bisharp faints.
4/4.
Tumblr media
Yay.
The question now becomes what I want in front. If memory serves, Iris is now the Champion. I don’t know if her Dragon theme is changed up at all. I do know that her levels will be a bit higher than what these four fights have entailed.
I think I’ll put Caspet up front. She’s faster than anything, and does enough damage that unless something goes very wrong, she has an excellent chance of just nailing the first thing.
...On second thought, no.
Iris might have a Hydreigon. Likely not first, but I do not need to ever give a Hydreigon extra moves. So.
Stormy, I guess. Stormy’s reliable, and whatever happens, probably won’t die in one hit. Okay.
Tumblr media
Hi I’m Iris and I’m extra af.
Tumblr media
AF.
Tumblr media
Oh, I don’t remember her theme music. Feels... prancy. I like it.
HEY WAIT LOOK I DID A SMART THING SHE DOES HAVE HYDREIGON FIRST.
STORMY USE HAMMER ARM AND PLEASE HIT.
(It’s level 57.)
Hydreigon uses Flamethrower. I figured there was a very good chance of that happening, but Stormy endures the hit in the green, and Hammer Arm hits.
Hydreigon down!
Stormy grows to level 65!
Aggron is next.
I don’t want to risk Earthquake, Nessy’s taking this.
Level 57 Aggron, Nessy uses Surf. No point wasting Hydro Pump on something likely to have Sturdy.
Okay so it doesn’t have Sturdy.
It’s also gone now.
Nessy’s level 68.
Iris sends out a Lapras, Vertex needs something to do. Vertex uses Charge as a safety measure/to see if I can one-shot the Lapras. Lapras uses... Ice Beam, I think, but I was typing in this window when the attack went off. Because this has my full attention.
Vertex uses Spark. Lapras faints.
Iris has a Haxorus. It is level 59.
Well, Nessy has Ice Beam.
Haxorus hits first with Earthquake. Nessy stays green.
IRIS WHY DOES YOUR HAXORUS HAVE A FUCKING FOCUS SASH COME ON I’M SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO LIKE YOU.
Siiiigh. Nessy gets to use another Ice Beam, likely after the inevitable Full Restore comes in.
Yes to both those things.
Haxorus faints.
Iris sends out Druddigon, Nessy stays in. Nessy uses Ice Beam. ...Druddigon survives with a sliver of red, but is frozen. Nessy uses Ice Beam again. Druddigon faints.
Last up is Archeops.
Tumblr media
I am, at heart, a sentimental man.
Tumblr media
Caspet. I believe in you. You, the closest thing to a starter this run had after the first hour.
Use Shadow Ball.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WE WIN.
That...
Geez, that certainly happened, didn’t it? I can’t say I’m disappointed, exactly, because I like winning too much, but. Outside of Vertex vs. Scrafty, there wasn’t much fear involved. Kind of anticlimactic.
And sad, to think that Diego could have been part of it if we hadn’t met DAMIAN first. He missed it by so little.
Tumblr media
Iris.
Iris.
Please.
Tumblr media
Wait, where’s the shot of my entire team? Game!
Tumblr media
No.
Tumblr media
Here are our available living pokemon in the box. Hark and rejoice, my friends I will never play with again. The friends most of you never met are victorious.
Tumblr media
Here lie Dreamor, Tagg, Sylarana, Sasuke, Itsy, Stella, Puff, Boruto, Cerberus, and Diego.
Thank you, and farewell.
Final team:
Tumblr media
Nice job, guys.
Caspet, level 70.
Photon, level 65.
Nessy, level 68.
Vertex, level 64.
DAMIAN, level 65.
Stormy, level 65.
Tumblr media
Phew.
So all of the tension went out of order for this one. My starter died early, I was massively overleveled for the Elite Four and didn’t even expect to be fighting them this round, then I was, and meaningful deaths weren’t that common or devastating.
But I had fun, and I hope the two of you who sometimes read these enjoyed the adventure. I’m done with this gen for like. at least a year, but I have decided to do a Nuzlocke of either Fire Red or Leaf Green. I don’t know which, but I’m not going to Randomize the run. I am going to have one very specific rule changing things up to make going back to the gen three version of gen one hopefully very worth it, but yeah.
I don’t know when that will be happening, but I seem to enjoy having one of these going. Plus, I think the rule changes I have in mind would make my posts less meandering.
Anyway, thanks for reading.

Let’s Take a look at Pokemon Let’s Go
Pokemon Let’s Go is releasing this week so let’s take a look at some of the features we know about.
Tumblr media
Catching
This is the feature that had most players losing their shit about, but it’s really not that big a deal. Sure you can’t battle wild pokemon, but who was bothering to do that anyway, beyond hurting them a bit to catch them. For the most part, there isn’t really a difference. This way might even end up being more convenient, because you don’t have to worry about accidentally fainting them.
Legendary battles
While Let’s Go does take away wild pokemon battles, you still battle all the legendary pokemon, and you must defeat them before given the chance to capture.
I like this, because legendary battles should be epic and awesome, but since you can often catch them right away, they are also very anticlimactic, especially for whatever chump you throw the master ball at. This way forces the battle against the legend to actually be somewhat interesting.
Ding Dong the HMs are dead
I wrote a whole other post about just this, but the partner pokemon gains special techniques to perform the function HM moves used to, which means you can make your team out of whatever pokemon you want to, and with whatever moves you want to, rather than having to have your team know all the HMs.
Tumblr media
Pokemon
Arguably the most important part of a pokemon game is the pokemon available. Let’s Go will apparently contain just the original Kanto pokemon. This makes sense as the games are set in Kanto. They did choose to additionally allow Alolan forms and mega evolutions. If they didn’t, there would only be one line each of Ghost, Dragon, and Steel pokemon, and literally no Dark pokemon. Probably a good idea to include them.
A notable absence from the games are all the evolutions that were introduced in later generations. In Let’s Go, you will not be able to evolve your pokemon into Crobat, Bellossom, Politoed, Slowking, Magnezone, Steelix, Hitmontop, Lickilicky, Rhyperior, Blissey, Tangrowth, Kingdra, Scizor, Electivire, Magmortar, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Sylveon, Porygon2, or Porygon-Z.
Gamefreak did the same thing back in FireRed and LeafGreen, and everyone thought is was stupid that they couldn’t evolve their Golbats until they got the national pokedex.
We thought they learned their lesson from this, because in ORAS, they actually changed the numbering of pokemon so as to include the evolutions that were introduced in gen IV like Gallade, Probopass, Roserade, Dusknoir, and Froslass. It turns out that lesson was only temporary. This time Gamefreak has decided to pretend those pokemon don’t exist.
Tumblr media
They’re following me...
A returning feature from yellow version that hasn’t been seen since HeartGold and SoulSilver. I don’t actually like this feature. It just adds more distracting stuff to the screen. It’s feels like the George Lucas special edition of a pokemon game. However, I’m definitely in the minority here; Most people seem to love this feature, so it makes sense to include it, I guess.
We have internet now?
Normally you could only visit the PC box at a pokemon centre, but you can do it from wherever. I’m not really sure how useful that is, but it’s convenient. It does allow you to heal your pokemon on long routes by dropping them in the PC, closing it, reopening it, and taking them back out again, so you don’t have to keep running back to the pokemon centre on long routes.
A little help here?
You can now grab a second controller and get a friend to join you. I wouldn’t recommend most people use this, as it makes the game incredibly easy. While both you and your partner will send out a pokemon, the opposing trainers only send out 1, so they’re trivial to defeat.  This isn’t exactly a bad feature, because you can always just ignore it. It’s just a feature that most people probably shouldn’t use.
What they probably should have done here is just have the opposing trainers also send out another pokemon. If they did, and you felt like playing though the whole game this way, you could optimize your team for double battles, and actually use moves like Helping Hand, Follow Me, and Wide Guard. In the normal games it’s not worth doing because double battles are so rare, but in that case you could make every battle a double battle if you wanted to.
Tumblr media
Why u no evolve?
So the starters are a bit different than usual. That’s fine; Eevee and Pikachu are alight pokemon anyway, but they’ve forgotten how to evolve. This is for a historical reasons and not because it’s actually a good idea.
One of the main elements of pokemon is that they evolve, that you get to watch the little pals you shared the journey with grow along side you, but not for your partner pokemon this time around. At the very least they had the good thinking to buff their stats a little and give them new moves. It’s just a little ironic that Eevee, the evolution pokemon, forgot how to evolve.
On a side note, since the partner has to be with always to use the HM move substitute, does that mean we always have to use our starter. I’m not sure, but I really hope that’s not the case. In previous games, you’ve had the option to not use your starter and instead grab a Ratata, or a Nidoran, or whatever’s nearby, but I’m worried Let’s Go is taking away more options. Not 100% on that one though.
Tumblr media
The pokemon summary screen just got a bit simpler
Let’s Go will not have any abilities or items. This is a bit sad, we’re losing even more variety in our team choices. This is another thing that’s mostly true for historical reasons. Back in the original Kanto games, abilities didn’t exist yet.
Abilities were added in gen 3, because it was another way to make each pokemon feel unique. In time, they could even do crazy stuff like Slaking, Archeops,  Aegislash, or Komala’s unique abilities, and they really feel different.
They might be able to mostly get away with not having abilities this time. The Kanto pokemon were originally designed without abilities, so you wouldn’t have to change them too much when removing the ability. If they ever made a Let’s Go game in Hoenn or beyond, they would definitely have to put them back.
Even with just the Kanto pokemon, there is the problem of Mega Pinsir. It gained the flying type and used it’s aerilate to turn it’s normal moves into powerful flying moves and that’s how it works. Without the ability, it doesn’t actually have any flying moves, so they will have to muck around with Pinsir’s moveset.
The removal of items are less important, but there are certain builds of pokemon that are no longer viable without them. Abilities are definitely the bigger loss.
Tumblr media
So that’s everything I can think of right now. There are a couple clever innovations, but these games have also managed to unlearn a bunch of lesson the pokemon series has taught itself about what works. Overall, this game will be slightly worse, but not by much.
Either way come Friday, I’m getting my copy. I’ve already reopened my old pokemon go save and caught the version exclusives from the other game, so I’m pretty much ready to go.
6 more days...

Note
for the drabble stuff: you're safe now. i don't really care who, i just want someone saying that to emma. please?
So this ended up being a little long for a drabble, but I like the way it turned out. Hope you like it too :)
“You’ll be safe at Cassius’s place. I’ll take you to meet him.”
That was a big, fat lie.
I should have known better than to trust her. Living on thestreets, it’s every man for himself. They call us the Lumiose Gang, but wereally only team up to do things that we can’t do on our own. There’s no roomfor “sharing” or “being nice” in this world.
But she was promising something better, and I…I got hopeful.
Hope is a painful thing. It causes suffering all for thesake of what could happen to makethings better. And if it turns out to be false hope, it magnifies the pain offalling back into despair. In my case, that false hope tacked on the pain ofbetrayal and abandonment, plus a few new scrapes and bruises to boot.
I hate her. I hate all of them. They never cared about me.No one cares about me.
I struggle to my feet. I’m sore all over, but that’s nothingnow. I can’t lie here exposed until I feel better – I don’t need to leavemyself open to scavengers while I recover. I need food. I slowly begin makingmy way back down the alley. If my internal compass is right, the LumioseGalette stand is this way. I might be able to snag a galette from them or acustomer.
However, I haven’t gotten far before I hear footsteps runningtowards me. I don’t have the time or the energy to run and find somewhere tohide, so I press myself against the wall and wait for whoever’s coming to pass.
He’s younger than me, but just as thin. While his clothesaren’t nearly as tattered as mine, they’ve still got the telltale rips andpatches of a street rat like me. But what interests me the most about him isthe plain white box he’s holding. I’m certain that it contains a freshly-bakedbatch of Lumiose Galettes, and my mouth waters just thinking about it. I’mtaking that box of galettes away from him.
I stick out a foot to trip him as he passes me, and I snatchthe box out of his hands as he falls. I sprint in the direction he came from, adrenaline lending me the energy to keep moving. I don’t consider thepossibility that the kid I tripped might have been running away from someone until I’ve already run into him.
My shoulder takes the brunt of the impact, and I fall on topof him. I want to roll off him and keep running, but the force of the collisionhas made my injuries start to ache all over again. It’s hard to even do thefirst part of that. He gets up before me, and I brace myself for whateverpunishment he deems me worthy of for stealing his galettes. He reaches a handtowards me, and I wait for the blow.
It never comes.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “Are you okay?”
I slowly open my eyes. He’s looking down at me with darkgray eyes, and his brow is slightly furrowed. His hand is open and extendedtowards me – not forceful, but a gentle offering. He’s not reaching down tostrike me, but rather to…help me up.
I grasp his hand quickly – if he changes his mind, it’sharder for him to hit me when I’m holding his hand. But he pulls me up withouthesitation, and his hand releases mine and returns to his side. I lean againstthe wall for support.
“You wouldn’t happen to have seen…” he begins, but he trailsoff, fixing his attention on something beside me. I glance to the side andrealize the boy I stole the box from has arrived empty-handed, and the guy Iran into is looking between the two of us, slowly piecing things together. “Arethose…my Lumiose Galettes?” he finally asks.
I push myself away from the wall. I need to get out of here. But all of a sudden, I feel dizzy, and I just fall forward instead. The guycatches me and the box of galettes, but at the same time, the kid yanks the boxaway from us and flees. That’s probably the last we’ll see of him.
But then the guy’s free arm moves beneath me and he shouts,“Kit! Grab him!”
Is this guy a PokémonTrainer?
Pokémon Trainer or not, having him shout in my ear makes myhead throb. I only manage to straighten up for a moment before I have to slumpagainst the wall again, but at least I can see what’s going on now.
The guy has sent out a huge, round, pink Pokémon with a longtongue. The Pokémon extends its tongue and uses it to grab the kid and pull himback to us. The guy takes the box back from the kid, smiles, and says, “Thankyou!” Then the Pokémon puts the kid back on the ground. He glances quicklybetween me, the guy, and his Pokémon before he sprints away
That kid has the right idea. I’d sprint away too, if I hadthe energy to do it. Instead, I just lean against the wall and warily eye theblack-haired guy whose galettes I just tried to steal. He’s taller and thickerthan me, but his thickness looks to be more fat than muscle. I could probablyoverpower him if I wasn’t so worn out. I don’t know what he’s going to do tome. I wish he’d just take his galettes and leave.
“Hey,” he says, “are you okay? You didn’t answer me lasttime.”
That again? He sounds like he’s concerned about me. But whywould he care about a strange kid who just tried to rob him? He’s faking it, Iknow he is. I don’t know what he hopes to gain from it, but there has to besomething that he wants from me. He can’t seriously care about me.
It would be nice if someone cared about me.
I shake my head quickly – not a lot, but enough to get mymessage across to him. “I’m tired, and…and I’m hungry, and, and, and my bodyhurts all over,” I whimper. I’m trembling now, and the guy puts a hand on myshoulder. I think it’s supposed to be comforting, but I flinch awayinstinctively. I’m not used to comforting touches.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” the guy says, slowly lowering hishand. “I’m not gonna hurt you. You’re safe now. Here, do you want something to eat?”
He opens the box of galettes and takes one out and offers itto me. I hesitate, instinct telling me to stay on my guard. Being too trusting gotme into this mess in the first place, and I don’t want to make things evenworse for me. Slowly, I take the galette from him, and once I’m certain that he’snot going to take it back from me I gobble it down in two bites.
“There you go,” he says, grinning widely. “Food makeseverything better. Don’t worry – there are plenty more where that came from!”He offers me another galette, and I accept it with a little less hesitation. Ieat this one slower, stopping to savor the flavor of the sweet. He takes onefor himself and gives another to his Pokémon. Then he looks back at me. “I’mDiamond,” he says. “This is Kit, my Lickilicky. What’s your name?”
I look from his face down to the box of galettes and back tohis face again. He chuckles and hands me another galette. I didn’t want to behopeful, but here I am, hoping again. Hoping that his kindness is genuine. Hopingthat his kindness will continue. And so, I respond in kind. “My name is Emma.”
“Emma,” he repeats. “Where do you live, Emma?”
I shrug. I don’t know where I’m going to live now. I can’tgo to the plaza where the Lumiose Gang hangs out anymore – I’ll have to findsomewhere else.
Diamond scrutinizes me for a moment, taking in my tangledmess of hair, my mangled clothing, and my dirty, broken skin. “You look likeyou could use a little cleaning up,” he asserts. “Why don’t you come with me? Ifyou’d like, you can stay with my friends and I for the next few days. We’releaving after that, but…well, we’ll see what you want to do then. What do you say?”
I stare at him in disbelief. It sounds too good to be true.He can’t seriously be offering me food and shelter for days for free. “What’s the catch?” I ask shakily.
He blinks. “What do you mean, what’s the catch?”
“You can’t just give me all of this at no cost,” I say.
“But you need it,” he says. “I want to help you.”
“Why?”
“Why not?”
“Because you don’t care about me.”
He tilts his head quizzically. “But I do care about you.”
I’m silent for a moment as his words sink in. This stranger…Diamond, this young man who I’ve just met, cares about me. As if he couldn’t imagine itany other way. I don’t understand why. But maybe the why’s not as important asI always make it out to be.
I want to be with someone who cares about me.
“I’ll come with you.”
Diamond smiles and offers his hand to me. It’s pale andclean – exactly the opposite of my dark, dirty, scraped one. But I take itanyways. His grip is firm, but not tight – stable, steady, unyielding.
For the first time in my life, I feel truly safe now.
Surprise! This is a ‘Happy birthday Diamond’ fic too!
Happy birthday, my compassionate companion

so, heres all the kanto pokemon i still need in pokemon go
lickitung (and i need 50 candy altogether for lickilicky)
hitmonlee/hitmonchan (i have hitmonchan and enough candy to evolve a tyrogue into hitmonlee but additional tyrogue candy would probably be good to have for whenever i get one thatll evolve into hitmontop, especially if its one of those that could potentially evolve into one of the other two instead)
kangaskhan, mr. mime (im putting these together because idk if theyre making regionals available, like i doubt it since i havent heard that they are and the event’s been going on for 4 hours but they did say "you’ll have the perfect opportunity to complete your kanto pokedex” so they sure made it sound like we’ll be able to catch them)
chansey for candy (need 40 more)
tangela for candy (need 7 more so literally just 1, and theyre a reward for the “catch oddish/bellsprout” field research now so thatll get done soon anyway)
porygon (and i need 125 candy altogether for porygon-z)
aerodactyl (hopefully i can do a raid)
mewtwo/mew (this event isnt going to help me with these im just putting them here for the sake of completion)
oh and i still need 10 ghosts to move forward with the mew research so i guess 10 gastly/haunter/gengar is something i sort of need too
overall i guess there isnt a whole lot i need to focus on for the kanto event, which tbh is kind of nice since it isnt overwhelming

How would you improve Lickilicky?
Hey if it isn't old lollipop itself! How many does it take? Surprisingly, 3. 1. It's design. It's design as Lickitung is, surprisingly, not as awful as it could have been. But it's evolution making its tongue get smaller? What kind of evolution is that? And the wifi symbol - if you didn't see it you were lucky, but now you won't unsee it. Excuse me i need a moment. Honestly, more "licki" should mean more "tung". If it's suddenly more portly, make use of that! Or explain it more in the pokedex entry; give it something to make it feel...good! Just don't turn it from a "kid" into a "baby". Evolution doesn't do that. 2. It's Move Pool. Please. PLEASE. GameFreak please. Look at this thing it's not a BAD special attached, but it ONLY learns Wring Out for Special Attack naturally! And with its bulk, but no real recovery, it's left behind in that regard. HELL! This is a Pokémon who you can most definitely say deserves Stockpile, Spit Up, and Swallow in its Move Pool! Seriously why doesn't it learn it, even by egg moves?? 3. Make better use of its abilities!!! One in particular.Okay this goes with Move Pool but here's the easiest way to explain; Oblivious. In the original games after abilities came out, it prevented infatuation - we thank you for that as Whitney gave us PTSD. But in Gen 6, it also prevents Taunt from affecting them. So, what does that mean?It means that Lickilicky could be a Stealth Rock setter. Unconventional, but it would change how You find it in caves in Gen 6 too, so why in the hell did it never get a chance to learn it? Because there's only 1 TM? Not anymore there isn't so if it can't in a Sinnoh Remake I'm going to be disappointed. ~ ModGruntcle
