terraplane blues; or three times in which spike spiegel almost called it what it is instead of what he thought it was (part one)
the first of three times when spike spiegel almost used his mouth for good instead of running it, like usual
word count: 574
pairing: spike spiegel x faye valentine
author's note: cowboy bebop very much is my favorite piece of media so i've been working on this series as a way to celebrate that! this isn't very good, but it's good for me so i'm releasing it:) feedback is always welcome as long as it's constructive!!
content warnings: mentions of alcohol consumption
the events of part one take place immediately following the events of episode eighteen, "speak like a child"

He couldn’t stand the look he saw in her eye - the longing for something he knew that she didn’t remember. Once, he thought, he might have preferred that to the visions that haunted him during his waking hours and the unconscious ones too. Now, he knew that the blank slate was worse.
Spike had always fancied Faye as a rogue puzzle piece, one that the quality control worker let slip through the cracks. She had edges that were too pointy here, some that were too rounded there. She didn’t always fit without some finagling. Maybe that was what led him to pull her closer, fingers dipping into the soft skin of her bare waist. He wanted to compare their edges, see if they had a plane or two that would match up in the soft glow of the Bebop kitchen. He wobbled on his feet as his nose brushed against her warm one, rosy with blush from the liquor they had drunk. His eyes cracked open just a centimeter, just enough to match his parted lips. In that moment, he saw Faye for what she truly was. Scared. Lonely. Not that he hadn’t picked up on these traits before, but the feeling of her gripping onto the front of his shirt merely drove the point home.
Her hazy green eyes peered up at him in alarm. She knew that he had seen through her cracked porcelain facade. She took a step back, bumping into the counter. The moment was gone, the trance over. Faye blew air out of her nose in a rueful laugh and relaxed her grip on his shirt. She smoothed out the creases that her hands had left. Spike returned his hands to his side.
“Can’t do this tonight, cowboy. Sorry to disappoint.” Faye patted him appeasingly on the chest and he stepped out of the way for her to leave. He didn’t watch her retreat. He didn’t want to give her the full knowledge that he had seen right through her. Even more, he didn’t want to give away how the palms of his hands and his fingers still burned from where he held her. Stupid. Spike Spiegel was stupid.
He placed his hands on the stainless steel of the galley counter. The cool metal soothed him. He hung his head and inspected the ridges of his knuckles and the little scars that littered the backs of his hands. Out of the corner of his eye in the soft glow, he clocked movement. It wasn’t enough to set him on edge, and even so, if it was enough, he had had enough to drink that night that he would have been a goner either way. Instead, he found a spider ambling across the counter, slow and unsteady. Spike lowered his head to look more closely at the intruder. It was dark orange, large thorax, hairy legs. The special thing about the spider, however, was that it hobbled along on six of its eight legs. It made for an unsteady gait. Spike kept his eye on the spider, watching it with mild interest as he straightened up and pulled his pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. He spoke as he placed the filter between his lips.
“Six outta eight legs ain’t bad, buddy. Shame you aren’t a lizard.” Spike flicked his lighter and inhaled. He puffed a mouthful of smoke down at the scrambling spider and turned on his heel to leave.
