Utah Scenic Byway 12 and Red Canyon Arch by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along Utah Scenic Byway 12 with a view looking to the southeast at Red Canyon Arch. My thought on composing this image was to have the arch and structure fill much of the image while still including a little bit of the nearby landscape with the evergreen trees and hillside. The blue skies would then be that color contrast to complement the image with earth-tones present in the lower portion.

After our visit to Zion National Park, we headed out to our next overnight camping spot before going into Bryce Canyon National Park the next day.

We'd been heading up U.S. 89 for awhile before hitting the turn to 12, official known as Scenic Byway 12 All American Road.

Seriously, they call it that.

And there's a big sign right off the bat so you know what road you're on.

Okay.

So we're on this road and, by 'n by, the straight, flat landscape starts to hint at mountainous rocky terrain to come.

We get closer... and closer... and yes. Rock formations ahead.

Red ones.

Red rock formations.

And then the sign:

And then suddenly we're twisting and turning and upping and downing through all kinds of red rock, red sand, red cliffs, red canyon.

And all I could think of was Disneyland.

Disneyland!

Especially right outta the gate when we saw this:

And it reminded me of the old mine train ride at Disneyland's Frontierland back when I was a kid. And then later, Thunder Mountain Railroad when I was a bigger kid.

So yeah.

All this made me think of Disney because I experienced Disney first. Which, by the way, is a little like experiencing Star Wars episode 4 before Lord of the Rings and thinking Tolkien totally ripped off George Lucas.

Nope.

Tolkien came first.

Just as the rock formations of the American Southwest came before Disney.

You see, we were driving through the Imagineer's inspiration. Especially these rocks so precariously balanced.

That always seemed like a Disney thing when, in reality, it's a nature thing. It's a canyon thing.

It's the stuff of the real world once you head out into it.

Anyway.

I was quickly struck by how my instant reaction to all this amazing geology was Disney!

When it's so completely not.

Zion Overlook, UT (No. 1)

Your drive up Cedar Canyon to the plateau begins with a bang as you drive through the vibrant Cedar red hills, half way up you thread the narrows of the Ashdown Gorge and near the top you are treated to a small geologic amphitheater, not unlike the massive one found in Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Cresting the plateau at nearly 10,000 feet you will find the Zion Overlook remarkable. Through a forest of spruce and ponderosa the earth rapidly falls away fanning out toward the majestic canyons of Zion National Park.

Next up you will come to the Navajo Lake Overlook. A prehistoric volcano eruption dammed the east end of the present day lake. Volcanic activity was once common on the plateau. The surrounding forests have sprung up from these ancient lava flows. From the lookout you will see the turquoise waters of this narrow lake nestled at the center of a beautiful pine and aspen valley.
