The most human emotion
After having given it some thought, and also considering Chapter 97, I’ve thought a lot about what Enma said in chapter 88.
Of course, back when Phos went onto their revenge spree, most of us were on board with it, especially since the gems have wronged Phos greatly. But I never couldn’t really agree with what Enma said, especially since he considered Phos too pure after they got their gold aloy and agate legs.
And exactly that thinking is why the Moon people can’t pass into Nirvana. They considered Phos, while they were looking monstrous and only were out for blood (inclusions?) the most human that they’ve ever been,
while Adamant considered Phos human enough before (or rather saw Doctor Ayumu in them) that state.
If there is one thing that keeps getting Phos closer and closer to humanity, then it was them reveiving or showing love. When Ventri gave them the agate legs, she also gently petted over their broken face, or when they lost their arms, Antarc got themself into danger to get them new ones. Even receiving Lapis’ head was an act of love from Cairn. After each of those times they developed further and changed more.
But when they got to the moon? They were forced to have the pearl eye, they were forced to wear the lunarian clothes. That is when they stopped developing and were stuck in that Laphos phase.
Through the moon they ended up desiring vengeance, which made them lose sight of who they originally were. So it’s notable, when they got the final and last treasures, Sensei’s eye and Cinnabar’s mercury that they radically changed again. One was due to a promise that was fulfilled and another to give Phos the chance to pray.
But they truly became enlightened through a motherly kiss.
Phos wasn’t human because they wanted vengeance, but because they love. The lunarians are so focused on wanting salvation, that they could never consider love as a way to reach Nirvana. They only hurt and destroy, because that’s the thing that got them onto the moon in the first place.
So in a way, a rock amalgation becoming a divine figure is more human than any human souls that are residing on the moon.
Because the most human emotion is love.

Why would ANYONE seek to harm this sweet child? Oh wait. A soulless monster who wants the Tragedy to happen and all of us to die, that’s what. And if RA is right about its identity, well they’ve sunk to new lows.
Hmm...
Nhhgghh....
It's okay, sweetie. Everything's gonna be okay.

Houseki no Kuni chapter 97 got me obliterated, that has to be the most beautiful chapter i've read in this manga so far. It's the first time we have a concrete grasp into what doctor Ayumu was like and truly she's merely stunning, be it through her odd behaviour, her odd physique... Everything about her is so intriguing.
Also, did she fire her colleagues, or did she kill them???? ( maybe neither )

I've seen this thrown around a lot, but why do so many people assume that Phos hates everyone and won't pray out of spite, when the first thing they wanted to do after getting Sensei's eye is rebuilt everyone? All that they've ever wanted was to get the Moon people to stop hurting them. To be happy.
Though I do not think they'll pray, I do think they'll end up guiding the moon people to Nirvana, as Shiro and the board game also endes up leaving their plane of existence.

Going insane over this chapter and thinking about maybe adamant broke after praying for the doctor, in a heartbroken kind of way, or maybe the realisation that she wasn’t there and he’ll truly never see her again??

i’m so tired of ayumu being disregarded as the “annoying,” “petty,” “toxic,” “unlikable” leader of the love live! groups.
ayumu’s mere existence marks a huge turning point for the love live! franchise. she was our first leader who broke the trend of “genki smile-attribute girl who’s a ray of sunshine, but sometimes gets sad because not every day can be a sunny day. :(”
now, i love honoka and chika with my whole heart, believe me, but it’s so refreshing to break that formula. it’s such a breath of fresh air to have a leader who’s unsure of herself and her group right off the bat, who isn’t naïvely charging forward to chase her goals, hell, who isn’t even chasing her own goals.
ayumu doesn’t even particularly care for or want to be an idol, she just wants to fulfill her girlfriend’s (oh, it’s not technically canon yet? sighhh fiiiinneeee) “dearest friend’s” wishes. she is the first leader who doesn’t become an idol for her own sake or for her school’s, but for yuu’s.
she is selfish, she is petty, she is clingy, but she’s sixteen. like you were a saint when you were a teenager? like you weren’t just as, if not more, petty and unsure of yourself? please.
while honoka and chika highlight the wonderful impulsiveness and childish naïveté of adolescence, ayumu encompasses the insecurities, the dependency on others, and the desire to please others, even at the detriment of oneself.
… and honestly? for that reason, ayumu already immediately feels like a more grounded and realistic character. somebody that girls her age can actually relate to and see themselves in — insecurities, pettiness, clinginess, and all.
this isn’t even to say that honoka and chika don’t have problems — trust me, if you think that, you clearly haven’t read the stories in the games or watched the animes — but that’s all they are to them. problems. everybody has those, and frankly? the two of them resolve those problems rather quickly. they’re fleeting, inconsequential things to them. they solve their problems more like adults would, and take most things in stride.
(yes, i’m proud of My Girls™, how could you tell?)
ayumu’s problems are deep-seated. when something arises, instead of vocalizing her discomfort, she keeps quiet and internalizes it — we see her doing this at least once in every episode of the nijigasaki anime, up until it reaches a head later in the show with her confrontation of yuu. she lets things fester and build up inside of her until, regardless of how trivial they seem to those from the outside looking in, they seem like world-ending dilemmas to her.
in short, her problem-solving skills are nonexistent, not unlike those of most teens her age.
anyway! let’s all appreciate the love live! team for giving us more well-rounded, flawed, realistic characters in their media instead of hating on a sixteen-year-old for, well, acting like a sixteen-year-old.
TL;DR: stop hating on ayumu for acting like we know you acted at her age! teens are petty, insecure, and confused little critters, and that’s okay!
thanks for coming to my ted talk. 🎀

hnk ch. 100 thoughts (spoilers)
Making a full-on separate post because I thought there was a lot to draw from in this recent chapter... I needed to document it, so here is my veryy long thought bubble on hnk 100:
The chapter felt like a depiction of Phos in transition to accepting themself and adapting to a new phase of peace that they hadn’t experienced before. While young Phos had a carefree life, they were perpetually stuck feeling useless, never satisfied with the way they lived, and gradually lost all their friends, selfhood, and purpose.
It’s a little difficult to emotionally match the pacing of the story considering how often the series goes on hiatus now, but note that Phos had only recently come to terms with their own flaws and the reasons why everything ended up the way it did. They had a wish to be happy, and meeting these lifeforms allowed them to realize the meaning of their existence and be more content with it.
That poetic verse was introspective and contemplative. Rather than placing worth based on certain levels, like the gems’ hardness levels or Lunarians’ caste system, these rudimentary rocks perceive that all life is made equal. For thousands of years, gems tied their own value to a designated role, and if they couldn’t fulfill it, they devalued their existence. We saw a lot of perspectives throughout Phos’ journey, including how Rutile “failed” as a doctor for being unable to fix Padapradscha on their own, or how Dia “failed'' to live up as a diamond with refined fighting skills compared to their rivaled counterpart. Again, these are just flawed traits passed down from their human predecessors and the curse of immortality.
The chapter ending conveyed a hopeful conception that all things, primitive or refined, come from the same place (nature). I struggled to connect the details mentioned in ch 97 before, but it gave us sooo much foreshadowing to this new world. Dr. Ayumu said that, “the inorganic things that we had been using for ourselves will soon have a world of their own'', alluding that these little guys that Phos met are the new world.
Interesting how Dr. Ayumu wanted Adamant to “build the bridge” and Phos to “burn the bridge” in order to create this “beautiful, rational world” to be a more freeing and less destructive place, and refresh the Earth to avoid relying on human values and qualities to stay self-fulfilled.
I was talking with @/mlkinis who brought up an interesting theory of using rocks in this new arc to symbolize the reversion of materialism. The rocks, elements derived from basic nature, have vastly different virtues compared to the gems, a class of refined minerals that developed a habitual routine of upkeep socially and culturally. While gems are also made from the Earth, they are perceived as high-value and are often polished to be artificially beautiful.
One Buddhist principle reflects on detaching oneself to worldly possessions and desires, such as wealth, in order to attain inner peace, and it seems that having these primitive rocks is a representation of Phos “letting go” of the gem society, which may be another way of showcasing that the world is returning back to life as the way it once was, and that Phos is on a path to attaining ultimate happiness. I’m wondering if Dr. Ayumu’s line, “When you cross that bridge, burn it” refers to Phos leaving their suffering behind as they’re going forth to being happy in this new world that is coming to be...
Anyway, upon reading the passage, along with meeting the sentient rocks and hearing its rock friend sing the verse, I felt like Phos reconciled with their own self and existence, and melted from feeling at peace 🥺😭!! Thank you, Ichikawa as always… This was a very cool and comforting chapter for me.
