Super Mario Bros. (1993)
Tumblr media
In 1993, I was excited for Super Mario Bros. How could I have known any positive expectations would mean only disappointment? As an adaptation of the video game, it’s terrible. The film captures none of the excitement, characters, or even colours of the game. As a movie, it sucks too, with poor performances, many plot holes, and lame jokes all set in an ugly, uninspired world. This was the first video game film adaptation. What a shameful first step for the genre.
Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi (John Leguizamo) are Italian-American plumbers who witness the kidnapping of an archaeologist named Daisy (Samantha Mathis) by the tyrannical King Koopa (Dennis Hopper). To rescue her, the unlikely heroes travel to a strange parallel universe where dinosaurs never went extinct.
The Mario games aren't exactly known for their sophisticated plots. “The villain’s kidnapped the Princess, go rescue her” is a thin premise so of course liberties had to be taken. What's unforgivable is that writers Parker Bennett, Terry Runté, and Ed Solomon settled for a story this generic. Our heroes have to travel to this other dimension to rescue a woman. Why is she being kidnapped? Because her necklace is the key to opening the doorway between Koopa’s dimension and ours. Can't the villains already enter our world if they can come and grab her? It’s questionable developments like this one that makes the film the equivalent of picking long hairs out of your shower drain. The studio knew anything called Super Mario Bros. would be a hit so they put no effort into it whatsoever.
You'll be bored as the characters run from one location to the next, scrambling to shove away the references to the original video game to get closer to the finale, a big glob of special effects that can’t end soon enough. In general, this is an ugly film. Every set is covered with drapes of fungus (Get it? Mushroom kingdom?) as Mad Max-like vehicles parade through the streets while the alleged descendants of dinosaurs (who happen to look exactly like humans) talk about this boring scheme to take over the Earth using technology that doesn’t make sense, even in a film that features super jumping boots and magic rocks.
I expected to be let down. I was as a child. Instead, I found myself infuriated. The performances are terrible. How could they not be? The script thinks intelligence means reading through your thesaurus and busting out unnecessarily superfluous dialect instead of making correct decisions, using logic, or outwitting other people. Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper accepted their fate and said “If you don’t care that you're wasting people's time, we won’t either”.
If there’s one thing the film does well, it’s the special effects. There’s an animatronic dinosaur that looks quite good. I like the design for Koopa’s minions, the Goombas. They’re varied and kind of funny. The rest? Empty colors swirling on the screen. This picture thinks children are stupid. It was green-lit even though no one knew how they were going to get from Point A: Super Mario Bros. to Point C: Box office success. All they saw was the mountains of cash that would result from bringing a popular property to the big screen. You’d need the thickest, flashiest, air-conditioned, reclining, automatic, glow-in-the-dark, don’t-care-about-what-anyone-says nostalgia goggles to admit this isn’t one of the worst things to come out of 1993.
I hate this film. I bought it some time ago thinking it would be “so bad it’s good”. It isn’t. If you remember liking the colossal waste of time that is Super Mario Bros. and think it might be "ok", I feel bad for you. You're living a lie. Play the video game and pretend this movie doesn't exist. (On DVD, June 24, 2016)

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Tumblr media
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is goofy, good-natured, and ridiculous. It's a movie about a simple-minded pair but the writing is clever. The characters are memorable, the script quotable, and overall, it's so easy-going it's difficult not to like even before we dig into what makes it great.
Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) are would-be musicians, the founding and sole members of “Wyld Stallyn” (Pronounced “Wild Stallion”). The boys receive grave news from their history teacher: if they don’t get an A+ on their upcoming report, they’ll fail the class. Ted will be sent to military school. Wyld Stallyn will be dead. Enter Rufus (George Carlin) a man from 2688. To ensure the future's safety, he provides them with a time machine - the perfect tool to piece together a triumphant report.
Immediately, you know not to take the film seriously. We’re told that humanity will, in the future, exist in a state of perpetual happiness due to the inspiration they derived from the Wyld Stallyn. That's tough to believe. Almost as tough as the broad caricatures of Billy the Kidd (Dan Shor), Napoleon (Terry Camilleri), and the rest. The Abraham Lincoln we see (portrayed by Robert V. Barron) isn’t the least bit convincing. Of course not. It’s a lot funnier that way.
Bill & Ted and Wayne's World started a trend in the '90s. Two metalhead slackers with lousy grades embarking on a fantastic adventure. Sounds a lot like Meet the Deedles, Bio-Dome, and others. The imitators were doomed from the start. They featured unlikeable protagonists. What’s different about Bill & Ted? A number of things, first and foremost being that they’re friends, and actually quite intelligent. There is no contrived falling out, not an inkling of animosity between the two. They’re enthusiastic buddies through-and-through. They want to have a great time, and they’re inviting you to come along with them. It’s true that their book smarts may be lacking, but when it comes to the time machine business, it doesn't take them long to figure out how to run circles around everyone else. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is one of the few time travel movies in which the rules established remain consistent and the heroes understand, and take advantage of the true power given by time travel. Often the film will do anything for a laugh but the goofiness is a hardbound cover on a book that’s well written.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure does not ask you to go on a journey with two people you’d never want to associate with. In real life, you’d have a great time with Bill & Ted, either laughing along with them or at them (just a little bit). Their tight bond of friendship makes them instantly endearing. The adventure they embark upon is delightful. A myriad of quotable lines, memorable moments, and big laughs make Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure a minor comedy classic. (On DVD, March 17, 2017)

Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991)
Tumblr media
In Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, our heroes use a time machine to gather the material they need to ace their history class project. What could the sequel do to raise the stakes? It'll be hard but as long as it isn't merely a rehash of the first, things should be ok. The good news is this follow-up is quite different while still keeping everything that was fun about the first chapter intact.
In the far future, Chuck De Nomolos (Joss Ackland) cooks up a scheme to erase the utopia inspired by the music of Wyld Stallyn. With his stolen time machine, he sends robot duplicates of Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted Logan (Keanu Reeves) to kill the originals and prevent them from winning a critical Battle of the Bands.
Like the first adventure, this one's delightfully silly and ridiculous. This bogus journey our heroes embark upon takes them not through time, but through all kinds of exotic locations, including Hell itself! A bigger budget means you won’t see comically incompetent versions of the Devil or God, but that’s ok, different types of laughs are offered. There’s a nice blend of moments that are so goofy and (for lack of a better word) dumb, and others with subtle intelligence behind them.
The best thing about this sequel is that it is an original film. If you liked the first one, you’ll enjoy this sequel too. It’s a bit of let down that the duo's girlfriends - a pair of time-displaced princesses - don't get much to do but it’s a treat to see more Bill & Ted and the biggest new character introduced, Death (William Sadler), is hilarious. There are plenty of laughs and nearly as much good-natured fun to be found in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey as in their first adventure. (On DVD, March 17, 2017)

Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Tumblr media
19 years later, Bill & Ted Face the Music recaptures what made the duo’s first two adventures so endearing. It utilizes the time we’ve spent waiting well.
In 1989 Bill Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) were told one of their songs would unite the world. Though “Wyld Stallyn” had some hits, they’re far from achieving musical nirvana. The people of the future are doubting anything but their deaths will will do the trick at this point. Determined to prove them wrong, repair their failing marriages, impress their daughters, and become the successes they always dreamed they would become, Bill & Ted hop into their time-travelling phone booth and search the future for a version of themselves who've already written the song so they can bring it back to the present.
As in the previous entries, it’s evident the SFX budget was lean. Sometimes, that works in this one's favour. A killer robot (played by Anthony Carrigan) is goofy-looking, which makes its bumbling antics extra funny. The various historical figures are not particularly convincing - just like in 1989. The style of humor also remains consistent. Only the occasional CGI/green screen effects and the older actors clue you that this movie was made years later.
Time travel is used to great effect. Future Bill & Teds already know how certain situations will pan out and the past versions have to find creative ways to avoid or catch up to themselves. There are big laughs along the way and even a few surprisingly touching moments when Bill & Ted confront their aged selves.
The only major flaw is the conclusion, which you can figure out just minutes in. The good news is the attempts to distract you from this are pleasant. In particular, Samara Weaving as Theadora “Thea” Person and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Wilhemina “Billie” Logan. They're essentially gender-swapped versions of Bill & Ted. It sounds recycling what worked before. It is, kinda, but the actresses are so good at it, you won’t care. I’d love a spinoff featuring just them.
This film never takes itself seriously. We get intentionally inaccurate history lessons, jokes at the expense of Bill & Ted, at the expense of those who underestimate the duo’s intelligence, callbacks to gags that worked before, new spins on them, and some original ones too - the best deal with multiple versions of our heroes confronting each other. Throughout, it maintains and strengthens their unbreakable friendship. I can’t explain why but I found myself surprisingly emotional during the conclusion.
Bill & Ted Face the Music is a bit too long but it’s worth sticking around for the end credits, whose final gag you'll definitely want to see. The CGI isn't great but it makes up for it by bringing back everything you liked about the other two movies (even George Carlin, in a way). This love letter is a treat for those who have always wanted the duo to be a trilogy. (September 20, 2020)
