💬 Tell me a YA fantasy series on your TBR! 🤎📖 This Woven Kingdom by @tahereh is on my TBR for this year! This series sounds incredible and I can’t wait to dive in! 🤎📖 . . . s u m m a r y : Full of explosive magic, searing romance, and heartbreaking betrayal, These Infinite Threads is the breathtaking sequel to the instant New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller This Woven Kingdom With the heat of a kiss, the walls between Alizeh, the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom, and Kamran, the crown prince of the Ardunian empire, have crumbled. And so have both of their lives. Kamran’s grandfather, the king of Ardunia, lays dead, the terrible secret of his deal with the devil exposed to the world. Cyrus, the mysterious copper-haired royal, has stolen Alizeh away to Tulan, the neighboring kingdom where he rules. Cyrus has made his own deal with the devil—one that would require Alizeh to betray her feelings for Kamran if she’s to reclaim the Jinn throne. Alizeh wants nothing to do with Cyrus, or his deal with Iblees. But with no means of escaping Tulan, and with the tantalizing promise of fulfilling her destiny as the heir to the Jinn, she’s forced to wonder whether she can set aside her emotions—and finally become the queen her people need. Kamran, meanwhile, is picking up the pieces of his broken kingdom. Facing betrayal at every turn, all he knows for certain is that he must go to Tulan to avenge his grandfather. He can only hope that Alizeh will be waiting for him there—and that she’s not yet become queen of Tulan. Q: What was the last signed book you ordered or had signed in person?. 💎 On Friday, February 17, I went to Books of Wonder for the Revelle by Lyssa Mia Smith launch event! She was in conversation with Lauren Blackwood, Rochelle Hassan, and Meg Long. This event was so good, I loved the conversation and learning more about Revelle. ✨ Since the book is set in the 1920s, of course I had to dress the part for this event too! Any excuse to wear my flapper dress, and I received a lot of compliments on it. It was a fun event and I'm really glad I was able to go. 💃 If you haven't noticed yet, I'm a big fan of Moulin Rouge - Revelle is Moulin Rouge inspired but with MAGIC, lots of magic! And lots of family love for Luxe Revelle - I loved the relationship Luxe has throughout the story with her cousins - it was so heartwarming. There are a few different magical families on Charmant, the island just a ferry ride from New York - and some of the powers include being able to charm and make the customers desires (seemingly) come true, time-travel, healing, mind-reading, and making food or drink the best you've ever had. But of course, all this magic comes with a cost to the user. Highly recommend this book if you're looking for a historical fiction fantasy with some forbidden romance and rival magical families! #Revelle #RevelleTheBook #LyssaMiaSmith #MoulinRouge #MoulinRougeBroadway #epicreads #balzerandbray #fantasybooks #yafantasy #debutauthors #debutbooks #debutfantasy #newbooktuesday #yahistoricalfiction #yaromance #yafantasyromance #yahistoricalromance #boostingya #currentlyreading #bookevent #booksofwonder #booksofwondernyc (at Books of Wonder) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co0RPI5vUR4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

★ You’re solving a cold case, which three characters are you taking along to help you crack the mystery? I don’t say this enough, but @maureenjohnsonbooks’ Truly Devious series is a must read. If you are a whodunnit mystery fan, à la Agatha Christie or Gosford Park or Knives Out, this series is going to be like candy for you. Love love love these books so much, and beyond thrilled the series continued after the first three books! Nine Liars just released a couple week ago and this whole series is perfect for a cozy weekend binge read by the fire. Start - 7:48 1/12/23 Finished - 11:26 1/12/23
I discovered this book as I was laying in bed enjoying my ongoing battle with what I can only assume is the flu. I easily managed to read Ivy Smoak’s Temptation in less than four hours. While there are a few quirks which I will discuss later, the potent attraction between Penny and Professor Hunter drives the story forward relentlessly.
The main reason that I would suggest Temptation as an addition to anyone’s TBR list is based entirely on the chemistry between the two main characters. This story is a prime example of one that would be classified as an easy read.
I am going to be incredibly blunt right now,.. The only part of this book that stands out in my memory is the chemistry that I mentioned between Penny and Professor Hunter. The other aspects of the story blended together and left a lackluster taste in this reader’s mouth.
Now, there was obviously something about this story that kept my attention. Obviously, since I read the entire book in one sitting. Basically, if you are looking for a quick read filled with scenes that will have you reaching for the toys you keep hidden then give this one a try.
Did anyone else have mixed feelings??
Onward to the next adventure fellow bookworms,

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

Buy The Fifth Season here
"LET’S START WITH THE END of the world, why don’t we? Get it over with and move on to more interesting things.
First, a personal ending. There is a thing she will think over and over in the days to come, as she imagines how her son died and tries to make sense of something so innately senseless. She will cover Uche’s broken little body with a blanket—except his face, because he is afraid of the dark—and she will sit beside it numb, and she will pay no attention to the world that is ending outside. The world has already ended within her, and neither ending is for the first time. She’s old hat at this by now.
What she thinks then, and thereafter, is: But he was free.
And it is her bitter, weary self that answers this almost question every time her bewildered, shocked self manages to produce it:
He wasn’t. Not really. But now he will be."
REVIEW
Book One of the Broken Earth series, The Fifth Season is a wonderfully rich, dystopian sci fi book with strong touches of fantasy from Black author N.K. Jemisin.
The world-building here is epic.Jemisin weaves a tale of three women protagonists struggling to survive in a world in which the natural world itself is an enemy.
They live on an unstable planet whose violent eruptions can only be controlled by people born with special magic called orogenes (see our three main characters).
Where they live, in the Stillness, rather than being considered saviors, orogenes are feared, shunned, killed or enslaved by the world's elites.
Toxic as their planet already is the people of the Stillness live in fear of a "fifth season" that might bring earthquakes and eruptions so severe that they will mean the end.
There are recognizable themes here - oppression, cultural conflict, racism, enslavement, environmental degradation, yet also love, hope, family and resilience.
"The Fifth Season" can be a hard read because it is heavy at times, drops you straight into the story and uses second person present tense throughout.
However, the story and compelling characters push you along as well as Jemison's prose which is clear and almost lyrical.
There may not be an instant click but the story that unfolds is worth waiting for. Most readers say their investment began and things began to coalesce for them fifty to eighty pages in.
While I'd class this as high or epic fantasy-sci-fi, unlike what we'd find in many books in this category, here we have queer characters, a well-drawn polyamorous relationship, "found families" and people of various races and genders. Black characters are centered -- refreshing as this tends to be a rarity in this genre.
Big ideas breathe in this novel.

BOOK BLURB
Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter.
Meanwhile, mighty Sanze -- the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization's bedrock for a thousand years -- collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman's vengeance.
And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.
Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night.
Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She'll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
N.K. (Nora Keita) Jemisin, a Black American woman, lives and writes from Brooklyn, New York. She's a graduate of Tulane University and the University of Maryland.
Jemisin was the first author to win the prestigious (science fiction) Hugo Award for Best Novel in three consecutive years with the Broken Earth series of which this book is the first, as well as the first author to win for all three novels in a trilogy.
"But another thing I tried to touch on in the Broken Earth is that life in a hard world is never just the struggle. Life is family, blood and found. Life is those allies who prove themselves worthy by actions and not just talk. Life means celebrating every victory, no matter how small."

Q: What's your favorite era of historical fiction?. 💎 Happy Book Birthday to Revelle by @lsmittywrites!. Charmant is only a ferry ride away. Give a Revelle a jewel for a chance to feel ecstasy. Revelle had me at "Moulin Rouge inspired" - say less! So of course I had to bring this book with me the last time I visited the Moulin Rouge on Broadway - and of course dress the part! I absolutely love historical fiction, especially set in the 1920s Prohibition era, throw in some magic and mystery and fantasy and I'm SOLD. If you're a fan of historical fiction, dual POV, YA fantasy, forbidden love, family bonds and of course - Moulin Rouge - this is the story for you! So happy Revelle is out in the world today in all formats including my favorite, audiobook~. Fun fact, I've seen Moulin Rouge on stage 15 times since October 2019, including New York, London, and Chicago on the tour - but I just watched the movie for the first time this past December!. Another fun fact, I first met Lyssa in an elevator at YallFest in 2021 before her book officially had a title and kept running into her during Yallfest!. P.S. Hello. Yes, I am alive, I know I haven't posted in ages but let's see if I can get back to it. I'm still reading as much as I can, but -gestures around- life has gotten in the way of blogging & bookstagram-ing. But I miss this! So I'm hoping to find time to come back!. #Revelle #LyssaMiaSmith #MoulinRouge #morerouge #MoulinRougeBroadway #epicreads #balzerandbray #fantasybooks #yafantasy #debutauthors #debutbooks #debutfantasy #newbooktuesday #yahistoricalfiction #yaromance #yafantasyromance #yahistoricalromance #moulinrougemusical (at Moulin Rouge The Musical - Broadway) https://www.instagram.com/p/CopabIeLL6W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Because I have felt pain here too. I have lived over a hundred years, and when I was shown just how alone I was by seeing the happiness of others, I found it difficult.” Then he placed his warm hand against the side of her face to hold it. “Your presence in my home has already eased this for me, and I wish to ease your hurt in return.” - A Soul to Heal, Opal Reyne
Rating-> 4 out of 5 stars!
A Soul to Heal - Opal Reyne
Duskwalker Brides Series, Book 2
Published - October 11, 2022
Genre - Fantasy/Romance
4.6/5 stars out of 1,714 reviews on Amazon
640 pgs.
I have gained a love/ick relationship with this installment. First, let's explore the love side. I found the details sprinkled throughout interesting as the author was able to continue building on the world, she introduced in A Soul to Keep. Reyne successfully continued on with the information that was introduced in the previous novel and added to it in a seamless way. I, as the reader, did not feel as if there was a “stumble” between the first and second installments. The transition was very smooth between the two. This addition was enjoyable to read as Reyne put the same effort into this book as she did the last.
Now...sigh...for the ick of my thoughts…
In A Soul to Keep, it could have been inferred from the text that the unnamed Duskwalker, who is one of the main characters in this novel, had the mentality of a child. Due to a limited diet, he was more animal than human which limited his mental abilities. With how he was described through the first book, I came to view this Duskwalker as an adolescent. With this thought, it became incredibly difficult for me to think of the underdeveloped character and the sexual acts/thoughts that were happening throughout A Soul to Heal.
When it came to the other protagonist, she was a character that was easy to relate to, but you wanted to scream at to wake up! This character, Delora, reminds me of the last season of The Office. She reminds me of when Pam Halpert was talking about watching the footage from her time with her future husband, Jim, and saying how she wanted to scream at herself to wake up! The reason I drew this comparison is because Delora is a woman who has been hurt and believed that everything is her fault. All of the marital struggles between her and her human husband is her fault. Her weight is to blame for his lack of interest. Her decisions make her a bad person. Her soul is tinged with the black soot of her actions; thus, she does not deserve happiness...or love. For me, it was easy to relate to her. I felt like Pam, screaming at her to wake up. Just talk and open up to this sweet being trying to save you! Then I think back to my own life and how I have felt the exact same way. I have hidden just as she did, and it made me wonder how she would react to reading my story...would she yell at me?
She probably wasn’t meant to evoke that style of thought, but the novel is in the eye of the reader, right?
I will say that Opal Reyne did an excellent job at building a character that represents bigger women! Every woman, regardless of her size, has had negative thoughts about herself. Reyne does not shy away from portraying these thoughts throughout the text. Over the course of the story, the reader gets to experience Delora’s personal growth and acceptance of her size. It’s eye-opening to someone who has struggled with the same issues throughout their life...it’s almost soothing to realize that the reader may not be alone.
Writing this review has pushed me to realize that my complaints about this book are based on personal opinions. This story is very well written and has the capacity to reach a wide audience. Like with the first installment, this story is incredibly unique. The world that Reyne is able to create is all-encompassing in a way that keeps the reader coming back for another journey.
Ick factor or not, why don’t you travel to the veil with us,
