I actually finished Monster a few days ago but I will state my feelings on it for posterity's sake: I think Monster, while composed of a number of well written and evocative vignettes, ultimately fails to execute its overall emotional arc well. If the story had been explicitly framed episodically with an overarching B-plot connecting these episodes, I might feel more positively towards it, but the fact that it must nominally develop its "main plot" each chapter while devoting most of its screen time to tangentially related stock characters was extremely frustrating. None of the twists or reveals actually felt consequential because information about the main plot is fed to you so painstakingly and in a way that's so repetitive that its conclusion is largely predictable and almost anticlimactic.
Monster ultimately does not do a very good job of developing any of its main cast. Its story and characters warp around Tenma, who is just not very interesting. I was frankly just fed up with him and the unilateral adoration that every character holds for him by the end of the story. Nina was extremely underdeveloped for the character she should have been and supposedly was within the story and any pathos that could have been elicited by her was neutered by first having her be barely present for the vast majority of the story, and second by also relegating her into being a Guy Who Just Loves Tenma. Eva was probably the closest any character had to a real character arc and her writing was just so absurdly misogynistic for nearly the entire story I couldn't enjoy any time she was on screen. Johan should have been an interesting character, but the manga got so long and drawn out that by the end I was just fed up with him.
The story overall was weirdly saccharine in a way that felt almost childish in contrast to its intended tone, and while that's not in itself a bad thing, its attempts to portray humanity as Overall Good felt simplistic and often cheap. It kinda goes hand in hand with how horribly it attempts to address WWII. "Well, The Nazis Felt Really Bad About It" and "If You Think About It, Japanese People Were The Real Victims" are not, uh. Themes that show a willingness to contend with complex morality or any real belief in human goodness aside from superficial self-reassurance. Also Urasawa Naoki is insanely insanely insanely afraid of sex.
Ultimately I think Monster would have been way, way better if it had just been shorter and had treated its main plot in any reasonable manner. It had a lot of interesting, evocative moments, and a lot of the ideas of the main plot could have been really good to chew on if the main plot hadn't lost momentum long before it was actually wrapped up. Nina and Johan are given very interesting treatment on occasion, and I have been thinking about their characters and relationship quite a bit since finishing Monster, but the plot was so bogged down in the Various Extraneous Dipshits and the need to conform every aspect of Nina's character around Tenma that there's no actual interesting conclusion to be drawn from them.
I think on an arc-by-arc level, Monster is quite well written, and it has a few really strong moments. It just makes such poor use of its format overall that it sours the whole experience.

it starts with a ransomware attack causing a citywide blackout that last three episodes. no resolution is given for this, they just stop for no reason. Maddie disappears because she has PPD. the show proceeded to write chimney off the show for the duration because clearly he can't exist as anything other than an attachment to Maddie. they introduce a workplace bully targeting may, and Josh's response as a supervisor is to tell may to solve it herself because he wanted to be the bully's friend. this is not resolved until many episodes later at the end of the season with a tired ass "I'm a bully bc I'm trying to make you better!" reasoning. Taylor Kelley was completely lobotomized to make a generic love interest for buck. Eddie left due to his PTSD (one of the few good storylines this season) and they bring in a hot blonde firefighter to replace him (and be Kristen reidel's self insert character). buck proceeds to cheat on his girlfriend with her, then ask his girlfriend to move in with him. they brought eva back one last time for hen to meet up with her without telling Karen again. she at least did not cheat this time. Eddie is working as the lafd Twitter guy instead of dispatch where he could be actually useful. oh and a paramedic brought in to replace chimney is killing patients and bringing them back to life for clout.
and that's just season 5. upon reflection the whole season is a mess actually
season 6 WELL
the opening disaster is a pathetic blimp emergency. buck decides to have a year of "saying yes" and donates sperm to his frat bro friend he hasn't seen in years, Athena solves an old cold case in her hometown which was okay as a story, buck chases down a drunk driver on a bicycle, there's a whole episode about a movie star being scammed and "cursed", Bobby's sponsor who we never met in six seasons was murdered and it was severely underwhelming, Denny was sneaking around to meet with his bio dad, buck got struck by lightning, has a coma dream and fights his brother and himself to wake up, he gets math superpowers and he and Eddie scam their coworkers with them (extremely valid of them tbh), buck starts dating a death doula, there's a significant subplot about him not jerking off for weeks to give good sperm, Eddie gets paired up with a cardboard cutout of a love interest from a call idek how long ago it was because this season has been eleven thousand years long, and they try to wrap it all up with a saccharine bow because they knew all season the show was getting cancelled

How would Visser One's interactions with Marco and the animorphs change if she considered him one of her "kids" like Madra and Darwin? Hell, how would that affect her interactions with Eva?

Edriss would definitely make Marco a controller.  She wants her kids to “love” and respect her no matter what it takes, and Marco is not the type of person who would go along with her just for the sake of keeping the peace.
In response, Eva would probably not freak out in the moment, the way the Chapmans do in #2.  She’d probably bide her time.  Wait for her moment.  Pretend to be cowed and silent.  And then she’d strike.  During meetings with Visser Three.  During presentations before the Council of Thirteen.  During attempts to impress Visser One’s underlings.  Whenever it’d be most destructive, and least convenient.
Honestly, Edriss probably wouldn’t kill Eva.  After all, doing so would destroy her image of herself as one of those “good” “kind” “benevolent” enslavers, and she can’t have that.  Instead, Edriss would probably just get revenge by hurting Eva.  And Marco.  A lot.
Whatever poor yeerk got stuck inside Marco would be having a hell of a time.  Not only would he have to follow Il Duce around all day to kiss up and “I love you, Miss Hannigan” on command, but he’d also take the brunt of her perpetual wrath with Marco and Eva, and he’d also also have to put up with Marco as a host which seems like it’d be a nightmare in its own right.
Okay now I’m starting to love the idea that the yeerk in question gets so fed up with Edriss’s BS that he Pulls An Aftran and decides to quit the war and start working against Visser One instead.  Between Edriss’s saccharine insistence on absolute loyalty and Marco’s ability to talk the stripes off a zebra, I could see him getting pushed and pulled into sabotaging the war effort.
You know how Edriss becomes 85% more competent the millisecond she and Eva actually start working together in Visser?  Same thing would totally happen with Marco and that yeerk.  They would be a terrifyingly effective sabotage and espionage team.  Lots of fake intel fed to both Visser One and Visser Three, allegedly from each other.  Lots of orders from Not My Real Mom that get just a little bit garbled on delivery, leading to millions of dollars in wasted time/money/effort.  Lots of kandrona generator parts or Bug fighter engine repairs that fail inexplicably at extremely crucial stages of construction.  Lots of plausible deniability.
And the best part is, Edriss would have no idea.  Because she has a loving family.  She has a happy family.  She’s good to her pet humans, she’s kind to them, and she only needs ask them with a metaphorical gun to their heads for confirmation that they love her back.  No one in her family would ever dare go against her wishes.  Don’t be ridiculous.

Reap What You Sow

Finally finished Mass Effect Legendary Edition and gearing up for a second run. Before that, though, i wanted to stop and reflect on how well this game holds up, how ell this story is told. I’ve been playing these games since Mass Effect 2 was released on the PS3 over a decade ago and i haven’t regretted even a second of that time spent. I love these games. I loved these titles. And Legendary gave me an opportunity to experience the entire narrative, on one system, with a gorgeous face lift This makes me want Bioware to take another shot at Andromeda because, holy sh*t, can they deliver when they’re not hindered by corporate bullsh*t and it looks like EA is starting to accept that as fact and policy, rather than just the gripes of fans. I love these games and before i get back to it, i wanted to highlight my favorite companions because Mass Effect is nothing without those who run headfirst into the fire with you.
Urdnot Wrex

I hate the first Mass Effect but that’s because i’m a Sony shill so i started wit the best one of the franchise and had to double back. It was a poor experience by comparison but Wrex was f*cking delight. I loved this dude but his time on the throne in 2 and his limited time with the squad in 3 is what that sealed it for me. Uncle Urdnot is a goddamn joy to play with and even more hilarious as an NPC. If you romance Liara, definitely talk to him during the Cure the Genophage mission in 3. You wont regret it.
Aria T’Loak

I’ve been a fan of Aria since the first time she introduced herself in Afterlife. “Don’t f*ck with Aria.” Yeah, she definitely made an impression. Mostly an NPC in the second game, she really came into her in the third. The extended time we spent with her in the Omega DLC was exceptional. I loved that side of her we got to see and, if you play Paragon, you get to see an interesting evolution in her character. Not as dope as getting that awkward kiss at the end but still just as rewarding.
Javik

Good ol’ Prothy the Prothean. I don’t really bring him on missions in 3 but i make sure to check in after every major battle because dude is a f*cking fountain of snark. I do, however, make sure to take him on the Thessia mission because the banter he and Liara have n that temple is very compelling. Their dynamic is one of the highlights in Mass Effect 3 and i absolutely adore that sh*t. It never gets old and it never disappoints. I’ve played this game dozens of times over the years and i have never once deviated from these two, on that mission, since the first time i took them into that battle together. Plus, Javik in the Citadel is a whole ass delight. Make sure to check your bathroom when you wake up the next day. There’s a surprised in there for you!
EDI

EDI is a ray of sunshine in such ire circumstances. Long before she got Eva’s body, EDI was a full member of the Normandy crew. Her banter after becoming unshackled was brilliant in 2 and even more dynamic in 3. Seeing her becoming more and more “alive, over the course of that last title, was a real pleasure and i hated seeing her name on that board at the end. I almost always pick Destruction because that’s the only one where Shepard survives but it’s always a struggle. Me or EDI? My life or Hers? I hate having to make that choice but the time spent with her until that point, is always so much fun.
Urdnot Grunt

Grunt is MY Wrex. He’s the Krogan i was introduced to first and he’s definitely be the one i have the most love toward. I basically raised this dude in-game during 2 and seeing him finally come into his own in 3, is a big moment for those who are as invested in this series as i am. Not only is he an absolute unit on my squad, but the kid is hilarious. Some of the best banter in 3 comes from Grunt and it makes me wish i got to play with him more. Similar to Jack who is definitely going to make an appearance later down this list, you only get fleeting time with him but that time spent hunting Rachni is one of the funniest missions in all of Mass Effect 3.
Miranda Lawson

My darling Cerberus Cheerleader Princess. Miranda is never my first choice on a mission and was, like, my last romance option originally but, upon running threw these titles a decade later, she’s a lot stronger a character than i remember. Seriously, the growth she shows throughout Mass Effect 2 is real and is presented with a proper focus in her driven resolve during her solo mission in 3. Miranda Lawson is one of the most complete, best written characters in the entire franchise and I'm frustrated with myself that it took a whole ass decade to finally see that. Plus, i mean, she got a fat ass, too, so...
Mordin Solus

Listen, I'm going to keep this one short and sweet. Mordin is amazing and if you didn’t feel something when he did what he did in 3, f*ck you.
Kasumi Goto

Oh, Ms. Goto, i do enjoy you so very, very, much. Kasumi is like the mascot of my squad, the ship cat who keeps knocking sh*t of the table. She is an absolute disaster but i still love her anyway. She has some of the best lines in the entire franchise and i dearly missed her snark on my ship in 3. Tat lone mission with the Hanar was not enough time with the galaxy’s best thief but it had to be because Kasumi is nobody’s fool. She was like, “No galactic war with eldritch space horrors for me, sir.” but she made up for it in the Citadel DLC.
Liara T’Soni

Now we’re getting into the meat. Liara is a mainstay in my squad during Mass Effect 3. She is dub overpowered, especially with that Singularity, and i rarely go into a boss fight without it. Beyond her fighting abilities, Liara just has such a sweet relationship with Shepard that spans the entire trilogy. She opted not to be an official part of the team in 2, later taking up the mantle of the Shadow Broker, but more than makes up for that in 3. Liara is a principal character in Mass Effect 3 and her relationship with Shepard in that game, specifically, is fantastic to experience. If you romance her, it’s even more rewarding.
Garrus Vakarian

Garrus is one third of my Death Lineup. He and Tali stay in my squad in 2 and alternate with Liara in 3. Dude is, for lack of a better term, a straight up killer. I’ve only played mShep so i never actually romances Garrus but dude is easily one of the best companions in the entire game. The relation he has with Shepard and the way it develops over those three games, is only topped by one other character and she’s the premier on this list. Garrus is hilarious and a real force in the game but, more than that, he’s arguably Shepards’ best friend and a solid foundation they can rely on as dude shapes the history of an entire galaxy.
Jack

Oh, my darling Jacqueline Night. You were SO close to the top spot on this list and only missed it because you were introduced in the second game. That’s it. Jack is dope, one of the most complete characters in the entire franchise, and definitely a great romance option. I adore this chick for all of the reasons but mostly because of how realized she becomes by the end of 3. Her growth from “Psychotic Biotic” into maternal teacher for a bunch of biotic kids, was a turn i didn’t expect but loved to see. I love Mass Effect 2′s version of Jack, for sure, but her appearance in Mass Effect 3 is head-and-shoulders better than her initial introduction. It hurts we never got to actually got to play with her in an actual fight but her appearances were still outstanding.
Tali’Zorah vas Normandy

Tali is the best f*cking thing about this franchise and I'll fight you to the death over it. Listen, Tali, for me, is best girl, best character, best development, best everything! I adore Tali. She made that first game bearable but really came into her own in the second. By the third, she was the premier supporting character in the entire franchise for me. Literally her and Garrus stay in my party and for good reason. Tali’s romance is so goddamn saccharine that it gave me diabetes but her maturation as that narrative continues is exceptionally written. Being one of two squad mates who has ridden with Shep through the entire trilogy really gives Tali room to grow and it shows. She is the best companion in the game and i almost never leave her behind.
Look, all of the squadmates hold a special place in my heart but these twelve, specifically, always seem to find their way into my onsite shenanigans more often than not. Obviously, just because you didn’t make this list, doesn’t mean you didn’t have your moments and Aria being on here instead of, say, Thane, is not a knock against him at all. Aria was just hilarious and i enjoyed what little time we shared. Everyone on the Normandy is dope and i cannot wait until my next mission to save the galaxy from the Reapers with them. Not Kaidan, though. Never Kaidan. F*ck that guy, specifically.

EXT. ARLINGTON   /   a midsummer day; old southern gothic; dawn breaking over a horizon; the scent of magnolia and vanilla sweetening the air; homemade iced tea at the height of noon; secrets sealed in closed lockets and closed rooms; sun swept afternoons; the feeling of grass beneath your bare feet; wet blood streaked across palms; picking wildflower bouquets; the skeletons buried in the family closet
if this was a fairytale we would begin not at the beginning, but here, in the still antebellum calm before the storm. here is the amber-glaze veneer of old world nostalgia, curled at the edges like a faded photograph; a moment in time slipped between acts, between prelude and prologue: it begins in a garden.
a girl, half-sunbeam and half-wildness, twirls across the grass barefoot, lighter than a wayward breeze. there’s a woman watching her dance, an exclusive performance for an audience of one. the piece ends and the girl sweeps into an extravagant bow, dipping her head to the imaginary shower of roses raining down upon her impromptu stage of weeds and wildflowers. her solitary spectator bursts into jubilant applause, her laughter incandescent, filling her from throat to limb to toe. the both of them, radiant, the colour of sun swept afternoon, sprawl in the golden hour shade beneath the willow oaks. the girl lays her head in the woman’s lap as she soothes her fingers through the dark tangles of hair so like her own. she closes her eyes, breathing in the tenderness and blooming summersweet in the air.
her name is eva.

there is a way of telling this story that makes it bearable, but only just. enduring, in the way of the tide wearing away a thousand years of sand and stone, returning everything to seafoam.
perhaps we start with once upon a time, because it’s familiar and feels handmade. once upon a time, there was a prince. he was handsome and charming — two things too easily mistaken for good — and beloved by all that encountered him. magnetic by nature and flirtatious by disposition, he deflected the rumours and speculation swirling around him about marriage by declaring that he would go down on one knee only when he had met the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. but summers passed and the prince remained inexplicably unmarried. you see, though the kingdom was rife with dainty high-born ladies and heiresses, the most beautiful woman in the kingdom was not a lady or an heiress. she was the daughter of the castle’s steward, kept out of sight and mind by the humble circumstances of her birth. her beauty is fairytale, dreamlike, unrivalled by any woman the prince had ever graced with a smile or a kiss to bare knuckles. he thinks, at last, i’ve found you. 
in the story, the prince and the steward’s daughter fall in love. against the king and queen’s wishes, the prince announces his engagement to his newfound love. they are married in the palace gardens, a simple ceremony with only a priest in attendance. nonetheless, their happiness glows with tangible sunlight. 
a year later, the steward’s daughter gives birth to a princess. the last thing she sees in the world is the sight of her daughter’s eyes peering up at her, dark and starlit as her own. the prince takes his daughter into his arms as his wife draws her last breath, his greatest joy and most terrible loss coalescing with his daughter’s first cry. 
despite the tragedy surrounding her birth, the little princess’ childhood is full of life and laughter and simple pleasures. she is raised by a nursemaid who becomes like a mother to her. what more is flesh and blood, after all, than the woman who cradles you at night and sings you lullabies to sleep, who kisses your scratched knees and teaches you how to dance? she is her world, and her world is everything the nursemaid nurtures within her, stoking the embers of imagination and zeal, courage and fearlessness. the princess learns to dance almost as soon as she learns to walk. she is raised with music and song, the rhythm of hands and feet barely a step from instinct. she dances as she breathes, intrinsically, innately, like the music is another facet of bone or artery. when she is seven years old, she begins classes with a private master. by the next full moon, she is ready to leave the kingdom to dance, to dance forever.
INT. NEW YORK   /   the cold curling around your skin and through your bones like a well-worn blanket; the loneliness of being inimitable; the becoming of a star; the aching of muscle and sinew; gazing out at the city skyline at 3 in the morning; the whispers trailing in your wake; tongues and nails sharp as razor blades; hunger blooming in the dark
interlude: eva is twelve when she wins a scholarship to the school of american ballet in new york. sixteen, when george balanchine handpicks her to join the new york city ballet. eighteen, when she becomes the first black principal dancer.
she is one of only two dancers in the ballet that is not white, and mariana was at least born and bred in spanish harlem. eva, with her burnished skin and southern lilt, sticks out like an unruly hair from a bun, like a ballet master’s correction. she is good, unrivalled for her age, but not the best, and it doesn’t take long for the muffled whispers and cutting glances to score and scrape away at any last shred of resilience. the isolation and playground tyranny, she can live with, but it is the loneliness, the distance from her aunty celia, the homesickness that festers in her stomach like spoiled milk, that makes her bend until she feels like she could break. she writes dozens of letters home to her beloved nursemaid that she doesn’t send, and resolves to wait out the year until summer when she decides she will quit. 
the magnolia trees are in full bloom when she arrives in arlington, and maybe it is the smell of home, or the jetlag, but when she sees aunty celia, she dissolves into a cloudburst of salt and tears. she spends the summer in a daze of blissful relief, tucking ballet from her thoughts like a chest of old dolls in the attic. it isn’t until the second last day before she is to return to new york that aunty summons her to the garden. aunty, who is nothing like an aunty, really, with her petite frame and miles of thick, dark curls framing a painter’s muse of a face. tell me what is wrong, aunty celia says. you haven’t danced a single moment since you came home. eva bites her lip and stares skyward. i’m quitting, aunty. i hate it there. i don’t belong there, it’s cold and i miss home. i miss you, and papa, and being here. aunty arches a picturesque brow. but what about dancing? won’t you miss it? eva clenches her teeth, insistent. i can dance here, too. i can dance anywhere.
listen, little bird, aunty never calls her that anymore, not since she was tiny and still begged for bedtime stories. aunty holds out her hand and eva takes it, reluctant but with a quiet thrill at the easy gentleness of her touch. aunty twirls her slowly in a semi-circle, arm raised elegantly above her head. you will never belong anywhere because you weren’t meant to; you were made to be brilliant. you are a star, and stars only shine brightest in the dark.
so eva returns to new york, carrying a music box — her parting gift from aunty, specially crafted just for her, to play whenever she feels cold and misses home — and an inimitable light inside her that refuses to be tamed for anyone or anything. she is relentless, driven by more than mere ambition and pride. everything she does, she becomes the first. the exception and the exceptional. the trailblazer on an ever-ascending meteoric rise without a summit. 
this is her becoming.
INT. VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER   /   the smell of antiseptic clinging to skin; an expressionless mask; sickly saccharine platitudes; the knife of betrayal sinking into raw flesh; a broken locket; a sea of faceless strangers; the long soundless scream of grief; mourning lace; the suffocating weight of revelation
three days before eva is to dance the defining role of her career at age twenty-three, she receives the call. it’s papa. there’s been an incident; aunty is in the hospital. 
in the midst of final rehearsals and preparations, eva leaves. the director threatens to drop her from the show altogether, threatens to blacklist her from all future roles and performances. with her career hanging in the threadbare balance, eva nods, gives her full blessing and best wishes to the cast, and leaves. 
she arrives that night at the hospital and finds auntie swathed in the stark white sheets of a hospital bed, smaller than she’s ever seen her. a stroke, papa explains, hemorrhagic bleeding, a rupture in her brain. eva clutches at aunty’s hand, tears blurring her vision even as she scrambles to drink her in, by eyelash and smile line, the last glimpses of her she will ever have. aunty wakes with a small rasping inhale when she sees eva at her side and not in new york, getting ready for her stage.
of course i’m here, eva says, how could i be anywhere else but here? aunty shakes her head, lifts a shaking hand like a marionette extending beyond the life of her puppet strings to brush her fingertips down eva’s cheek. my eva, my beautiful girl. eva swallows, throat thick with love and apologies she doesn’t know how to speak, i’m sorry i did not write you every day, i’m sorry i did not come home last summer. i’m sorry i don’t know how to tell you how much you have made me who i am. worry creases the lines of aunty’s face, sunken deeper than ever before, in the sketches of time through across her features. she asks about the show, and what will happen to her career, and all eva can think is, i only wanted to dance because of you, because so much of me is just you.
you have to go, little bird. aunty smiles, and it reminds eva of endless afternoons in the garden, their very own kingdom, whirling barefoot beneath blue sky. time for you to blaze like the sun.

this is the end of the fairytale: the steward’s daughter dies in a hospital bed holding her daughter’s hand. the princess rises to discover she is gone from this world, as if every star and the sun itself has gone out. 
this is the truth, which will be brief, because when the truth comes, it comes hard and fast like a knife in an alleyway: eva was born out of wedlock, a wealthy heir’s bastard daughter. when his parents gave him the ultimatum, the girl he loved, or the business empire of his inheritance, he chose empire. the truth of eva’s birth was concealed, obfuscated when her father married an heiress selected for her surname and birthright. they told her that her mother died in childbirth, and allowed celia to care for her as her nursemaid, raising her not as a daughter but a ward.
after celia’s death, eva is given a letter from her father with her mother’s dying wish, and the terrible secret she had taken to her grave, sealed within. in the letter, celia tells eva the one fairytale she had never spun for her as a child. she tells her about how the prince and the daughter of his family’s groundskeeper fell in love, and everything that came after. she tells her that she never regretted a second of it, watching the supposed love of her life marry another woman and build the family he was always meant to have with them. he made his choice, and i made mine, and i would do it all again in a heartbeat because our love gave me you. my daughter, my eva.
tucked inside the envelope is the locket celia used to wear but never allowed eva to open. and inside the locket is a picture of a seven year old eva.
eva packs everything in her suitcase and leaves for new york the next day. she never sees her father again. 
INT. NEW YORK CITY BALLET THEATRE   /   a single silhouette beneath a spotlight; silk sculpted to a perfect body; the headliner that the crowd has been holding its breath for; gilded thread on golden skin; the blaze of a meteor; the coil of anticipation in your gut; adrenaline pounding through your veins; the exhilaration of perfection; the metamorphosis of the swan
the evening of the first show of swan lake by the new york city ballet, eva goes on stage. she dances odette, and it is the defining performance of not only her career, but of american ballet history. she is the first african-american principal dancer of the new york city ballet, and the first to dance odette in swan lake. it is a triumph and a magnum opus of a performance. 
she takes her final bow before an endless sea of faces, her heart going cold in her chest knowing the only one that she wanted to see is not there.
𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐓𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒.
after her history-making performance as odette, the media and arts society gave her the name swan queen. patrons and friends of the ballet frequently address her as odette or the swan at NYCB galas.
eva’s most prized possession is the music box her mother gave her during the summer she had made up her mind to quit ballet. it plays a version of the lullaby she used to sing to her as a child and features a specially hand-painted black ballerina as the miniature figurine that dances when you wind up the mechanism. she keeps the locket her mother used to wear inside it.
to watch eva dance is an experience — she makes ballet feel alive. while famous for her thirty-two fouette sequence in swan lake, it’s the emotions and tragedy she breathes into each performance that makes her dancing unforgettable. she lives and dies on the stage, dancing as if each show is a swan song.
largely alienated from the rest of the corps throughout her training at SAB and within the NYCB, eva is accustomed to solitude and keeping herself company. a combination of prejudice and envy at her exceptional talent kept her isolated, but rather pushing her to the margins as would have been preferred, it thrust her directly into the spotlight. over the years the whispers and rumours that she has only excelled and outstripped her rivals because of her unique circumstances have shadowed her. she’s proven them to be blatantly and objectively false time and again but it doesn’t stop the insidious nature of the hearsay from spreading. the instinct to brace herself for the worst when she meets new dancers, even those untouched by the poison of the NYCB corps, is deeply ingrained in her. it’s a habit she’s never had reason to break. 
there have been a handful of flings and stolen kisses with dancers from the corps, girls and boys alike. her longest and most serious relationship was a brief but volatile affair with a renowned artistic director visiting from paris. it was a passionate but disastrous love, and they ended things as the season came to an end and he returned to france. eva has never had relationships, or even dalliances, with anyone outside of the ballet. in her mind, it’s unlikely anyone that isn’t involved in ballet could ever capture her attention long enough to spark her interest. 
she’s well-versed in a variety of dance genres and still enjoys dancing for the simple pleasure of it outside the ballet. she frequently dances without music, on the rooftop of her apartment in the late hours of night, occasionally humming music notes and melodies. 
since her debut as a principal dancer, she’s had a number of suitors — mainly wealthy patrons, older men with fortunes to spare — that would send gifts and bouquets. other than wine or champagne, eva tends to give away the lavish gifts of perfume, makeup and jewels to other dancers. 
she has a younger half-sister and half-brother from her father’s second marriage. they don’t speak much anymore but she still sends them tickets to NYCB shows.
eva speaks slightly beyond conversational french and is fluent in spanish. other than ballet, languages are the only thing she has ever put her mind to seriously studying and learning. she’s interested in learning russian, particularly while she’s immersed in the culture at the bolshoi theater.

I’m rewatching S1 of the Flash and one of the things that stood out to me about CS is how easily she would give up on Ronnie. Ronnie is supposed to be her OTP yet she was constantly giving up on the rls or not fighting for him or moving on fr Ronnie to someone else. This is even more bothersome watching it a second time around. In comparison, Iris is ride or die for her OTP. She would never give up or move on fr B. Also she’s constantly doubting people esp B abilities in S1
One of the things I find frustrating about canon Caitlin versus a lot of her so-called fandom’s off-base interpretation of her character is that canon Caitlin is very pessimistic, while her fandom constantly wants to paint her as super sweet to the point of saccharine and constantly supportive. The latter interpretation is just untrue, and that’s fine, but her fandom wants her to be someone she so clearly is not. She always has been pessimistic, and in season 1 that quality is one we see in her over and over again. She also dislikes things which disrupt her status quo, so even though technically her life has changed drastically since the eruption of the Particle Accelerator, we still keep seeing her push back against further change. Like it’s really telling when she tells Cisco that she would have rather Ronnie died than turn up as he did (on fire), which definitely gave me pause, because in my mind it’s like, well the love of your life just came back, wouldn’t you want him back in any capacity?? Caitlin just didn’t believe Ronnie could be helped, because of how fervently she is against change, and so she just was unwilling to fight for him, and the thing is, in a weird way, I wish the show would focus on these character flaws of hers and that she's constantly second-guessing people and doubting them (Caitlin only believes in people when it’s comfortable for her to believe in them, if you’ve noticed, with the exception of Cisco, whom she constantly does actually believe in, no matter what). And as you said, therefore, her initial reactions to Ronnie’s return and even after he and Stein were stabilized can be quite jarring, but I also think this is who Caitlin is, and the narrative, itself, can’t even accept what it’s written (you see this a lot in later seasons, as Caitlin really comes to personify the Moral Dissonance trop to a T). What’s really bothersome to me is that her fandom just overlooks this about her, because it doesn’t fit with the whole, “she’s so sweet” narrative they try to spin??? And a lot of it is the show’s fault, as well, because Caitlin could have been a solid character, if the show accepted the flaws they wrote into her character and didn’t constantly treat her with kid gloves in later seasons, while also having her become increasingly problematic and the show refuses to address this. 
In relation to Iris, she just has a completely different personality. Iris is always very optimistic, and she’s also a fighter. So she constantly believes there’s another way; she’s constantly fighting to save the people she loves, and that’s why she doesn’t just accept inevitability, and it’s also why people like Eva can’t get in her head and turn her against Barry and Wally and Joe. 
The thing is, there’s never been a need to compare Iris and Caitlin, but the latter’s fandom constantly mischaracterizes both of them to vilify Iris in order to prop up Caitlin, and it’s exhausting. The fact of the matter is, in season 1, I never thought Caitlin was quote-on-quote sweet, but I also didn’t think she needed to be at all. I do wish the narrative owned the Caitlin that they originally wrote, though, and didn’t constantly coddle her, because that’s the biggest problem with her character: she really did some terrible things and exhibited some seriously alarming views and tendencies from as early as season 2 and of course onwards, which if you think about it, her season 1 characterization did lay the groundwork for all of this, but the show refused to even call her out. Because the show decided they didn’t want to her to be a morally dubious character, even though she 100% is and that’s who she originally was premised to be (because they wanted to tease her potentially villainous, frosty future in season 1, while crafting it in a way that would be tragic, but then completely overturned this to absolve Caitlin completely).
I also think it’s a problem that the show can’t write the vast majority of white female characters without having them embody really problematic tropes that constantly showcase them behaving in ways that demonstrate their blatant disregard towards the livelihoods of characters of color, especially women of color, but we’re still expected to see them as heroes or as otherwise deserving of redemption arcs.

The moment that we see What dreams are made of
Because they robbed us of a morning-after scene:
Nicolás awoke in the early hours of the morning – his inner clock long trained to wake up at the same time to start his shift. For a split second confusion swept over him at the unusual surroundings greeting his eyes. But then he felt the warm breath caressing his neck, the arm draped over his chest, the leg slung over his own. A small smile played on his lips as he turned his head and beheld the beauty sleeping by his side.
Eva, the feisty young woman that had intrigued him from the very first moment.
Eva, who made him have dreams again.
Eva, who he thought might be his second chance at love.
At that, the smile was replaced by a frown. Second chance – it wasn’t really a second chance anymore now was it? Not when his first chance turned out to be very much alive.  Nicolás still didn’t know what to exactly make out of the letter and it’s meaning. Didn’t now how he should feel or much less do. But what he did know was that he was absolutely smitten with Eva. He just coudn’t stay away, even knowing it was, in a way, very very wrong.
That’s how he had found himself drawing closer to her the night before. He‘d needed her to know that she was not as alone as she thought. And then one thing had led to another and they had found themselves making love – slowly and lovingly, yet full of passion and desire.
A glance at the clock in her room told him he had no time to futher reminice or think about the consequences of their night together. So he slowly started to ease himself away from as not to wake her but it seems Eva had other things in mind, as she just clung to him harder, murmuring a silent „Don’t go, please…“. He found himself groaning as she started to place tiny, suggestive kisses along his neck, up towards the sensitive area behind his ear. „Eva, I.. I have to report to duty .. ah.. in a couple of minutes“ – speaking was not an easy task with her mouth on his body. She just hummed in response and slightly bit into his earlobe. With that, he extracted himself from her and rolled over her, balancing his weight on his forarms as not to crush her. He was delighted to see her so playfull this morning. „Are you trying to get me into trouble?“ he asked, a knowing smile on his lips. Her answer was to throw her arms around his neck, murmuring „We will get into trouble together“ against his lips before closing the distance completely and kissing him deeply. Nicolás kissed his way along her jaw, down her neck and towards the swell of her breasts, all thoughts of work forgotten as she breathlessly moaned his name. Her slender legs hooked around his back, drawing the lower parts of their body closer together. A whine escaped her as the evidence of his own arousel rubbed against her – his sinfull little laugh was cut of by filthy swearing when she ground her hips against him. „You’re a menace“ Nicolás managed to ground out, gripping both her hands in one of his and pinning them above her head. „I’m going to be late because of you“, but with her stripped naked beneath him, her eyes full of desire and a saccharine smile on her sinful lips, he leaned down once more, languidly kissing her a final time before quickly departing from the bed. Eva escaped an indignant huff, leaning up on her elbows, tracing her eyes over his naked body as he began to dress himself. „You shoudn’t start something you don’t intent to finish“ she said to him as he began to button up his dress shirt. Nicolás simply leaned down, nipping at her ear in retaliation. „I believe you were the one who started this“, kissing her cheek, „besides, I fully intent to finish this“, he draged his finger down the valley of her breasts, „later“. With that he fully removed himself from her, making his way to her door, not daring to look back at her, lest his restraint shatter at the sight of her. Before he closed the door he heard her answer „I dearly hope so“.
 When Nicolás finally reached the brige 15minutes after he should have started his shift, Pierre already awaited him. „You look a bit ruffled, you okay?“ he asked his friend concerned. „Yes yes, I just had a rather… long night“. With a nod, Pierre made his way tot he exit, ready to enjoy his time off-duty as he spotted a lovebite above his comrades‘ shirt collar. He snickered, „yes, a long night indeed.“

Yesterday Charly Bliss released a new song called "It's Christmas and I Fucking Miss You" featuring PUP, and it's another Christmas song for the COVID era. It's a sugary pop-punk song that finds frontwoman Eva Hendricks lamenting past holidays with a past lover "I'll still try to force a smile/I just hope I make it out alive/It's Christmas and I fucking miss you". Like the best Charly Bliss songs, the strong hook draws you in immediately, and the band sustain the early momentum with rousing guitar arrangements and an infectious vocal melody that isn't strictly relegated to the chorus. PUP provide a few characteristically irreverent verses "Walking down the streets alone/Humming every single Carol that I know/But I can't even sing in tune/And they all sound like shit without you" that are juxstaposed superbly against Eva's verses and help prevent the song from wallowing in melodrama.
The song isn't even three minutes long, but both bands superbly distill the particular longing unique to the holidays this year within this succinct time frame. The bright, bubblegum pop-punk arrangements perfectly nail the middle ground between the sounds of both bands as they survey the sense of hopelessness and despair that's been a constant throughline of 2020. Like the recent U.S. Girls holiday single, "Santa Stay Home", "It's Christmas and I Fucking Miss You" succeeds by tapping into the humanity of the season without lapsing into saccharine sentiments or shameless capitalist simping. The thematic thrust and tight execution ensures that it's already another future benchmark for how to execute sharp holiday music that can stand on its own outside of that context.
