Okay so this might take math.

If we're talking about POSTED fic, then it's like 135k for Zelink. However, I WROTE that over the course of about 3 years so that's not my final answer. I've written some 25k or so for Zelink this year but it's the WIP of the TotK extension of CWRD and half of that is outline and datamining and playthrough notes.

I've been working a LOT on an original world that I first started kicking around 10+ years ago and I have no idea how to tally those words. There's 3 POVs, 6 drafts, an epistolary side-project, the outline, the excerpts, the language notes, the "plot potentials" side file... it's nuts. Probably close to half a mil if I'm actually counting words, and it's not even a recognized ship. Trust me, it's a SHIP.

In terms of established-fandom, words-written-this-year, that's gotta be Mass Effect. I started my first draft of The Chakwas fic on Dec 29 of last year, the current draft was from early January (when I figured out the style I was writing in) and since then I've put 211k words to paper in F!Shoker (Female Shepard /Joker).

So, tl;dr - Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, Shoker pairing, which will break 250k words written by the time the year ends.

Yes, ofc I also like gossip. But the thing is gossip in your blog has ONLY negative framing. Let’s be honest, most people here like JL and even those who pretend not to, still secretly do. Otherwise no one would give a flying F. And when sometimes they bring up something positive about him you start fighting with a full force to prove them wrong. That’s what tiresome. How cannot you understand that people can have visions and tastes which differ from yours. Yes, some falks genuinely find him good looking or funny or cute. SHOKER. You just call them stupid for being different. That’s the problem. Also JL obviously have some light sights among his sins as any other human does. Here it looks like he’s received more accusations than Hitler over the whole history of WW2. Very biased

Also I’ve been inexplicably devoid of spoons lately, so. *hands* It feels good to see someone else make do with even less. And maybe I’ll even manage to make it through tomorrow without another nap. We can dream, can’t we? (Here’s hoping all your autumnal crap goes away and you can have a nice time too, tig *all the hugs*)

He’s awake.

The aquarium lights are off, everything’s off, except for him.

There’s an orange glow from the bathroom, and now that he’s had a chance to blink a few times, he can hear the water running.

Not just him.

His back aches, and he has to use the side-bar to sit up. 

Yeah, yeah, we’re all off.

He can’t remember where he put his cane and he’s tired; it’s too fucking dark to look for it. He takes it slow, one slow shuffling step at a time, and leans against the wall to go up the stairs.

Fucking stupid open stairs. 

You’d think warships would be better about that sort of thing. Even if people like him aren’t usually considered in the planning stages, all those damn oo-rah marines get injured often enough to make it a concern.

Distracting himself with blue-print antagonism gets him all the way to the bathroom door without having to think too much about what his feet are doing.

Or why she’s there in the middle of the night.

The door is as silent as ever, the lights off except for the emergency runners that work like night-lights. She’s just a shadow, curled in on herself in the middle of the shower floor, wavering and indistinct as the water pours around her.

It hurts down his spine to watch, thoughts heavy enough to weigh him down, heavy enough it’s hard to keep his neck steady; he knows why she needs the one spot where she can’t feel the walls too close or too much space, can’t wonder about the ceiling falling or opening, equally terrible, equal and opposite.

He can’t join her there, can’t sit beside her and wrap his arms around her and feel the water surround them both.

He can’t, and it makes him want to punch something, but he can’t do that either, not if he wants to keep his hand, and he’s rather fond of his hands, so that’s right the fuck out.

He does the next best thing he can, strips and joins her, sitting on the bench against the wall.

He breathes in the steam and closes his eyes, and he feels her shift until she’s next to the bench, not quite leaning against his legs.

He rests his hand on top of her head and feels her sigh.

I’ll be right here babe, for as long as you need me.

As It Was: a multi-chapter series about Nihlus x Samara (Nihmara, if you will), enemies to lovers. Nihlus lives-and-becomes-a-squadmate-in-ME2 AU. Samara tells her story about how she chased Nihlus across a planet for two weeks. Squadmate heavy story, very little Shepard in this fic. Full disclosure: I love this fic to death, but I am horrible at updating it. (Rated T)

Lungs: a multi-chapter drabble about Thane/fShepard. Just a bunch of stories about them falling in love and being a mess in no particular order. (Rated T)

Departed: a two-shot AU about Legion falling in love with fShepard, but she’s already in an established relationship with Garrus. Told from Legion’s POV. During the Quarian-Heretic Geth battle above Rannoch, a piece of Legion’s code gets downloaded, rewritten and sold. It’s uploaded as a passenger ship’s AI. Shepard and Garrus have booked passage on this ship, under the guise of needing to be transported to a far off planet. The pair uncover a shady secret on the ship while also trying to free this small part of Legion, who becomes more and more unstable. Lots of OC murder involved. (Rated T)

Nocturne No. 1 in D Minor: a multi-chapter fic about Zagreus and Thanatos between escape attempts. Established lovers. Lots of fluff and smut. (Rated E)

No, I Just Have Something In My Eye

A nice still from animations testing today. We Shokerites won’t get a Beam Run goodbye... but we have a little moment on the Normandy, just before. A while ago, one of you fine readers asked me for an option to have Shepard tell Joker she’s always loved him. Well, here it is. Originally I just had him say one line here like, oh when it’s all over, I’ll be here. Or something. But... No, I could do better, so I am. I’m pulling out all the stops for this one, really trying to flex how well I understand the ME3 facial animation system. I wanna make it sing. I am sincere and brave enough to admit that I kinda got a little choked up seeing this bit of the conversation play out live ingame. As you might know, I directly manipulate FemShep’s vocal synth with my own voice, now - so to get that line, I performed it, and then listened to my voice filtered through the synth’s... and then saw it happen in context and it was kinda... powerful for me, I guess. It’s... a weird feeling, because like... It’s the line she’d say, it’s very in character, it’s what I wrote, it’s in keeping with the kind of stuff she says to other LIs. But, this line is definitely more than just Shepard saying this, is all I’m gonna say. I mean to be fair, the entire mod is more than just Shepard saying this. This entire thing is a love letter to the characters and the community. I’m feeling some kinda way about all this because I have worked on this almost every day since September 2020 and it’s finally here.

Fic Flashback

Technically supposed to be Fic Flashback Friday, but who cares!

Concept: Reshare an old work of yours, be it art or fic.

I decided to share the very first fic I ever posted to AO3, but never shared here. It’s f!Shepard/Joker ~8K wordcount. CW: depression.

Summary: It's been two years since the Reapers were destroyed. Shepard made it through the end of the war, but not without a lot of baggage and regrets. It's not until someone from her past shows up that she finally works through some of it to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A Joker For Her Thoughts

The music was loud and exuberant. Some notably upbeat thing that she wasn’t able to associate with in the least at the moment. To be honest, she hadn’t felt those things in a long time. Not at all in the two years since the end of the war even. Probably not since that party she threw for her crew in Anderson's old apartment right before the final push. Even then it was a struggle. Any good feelings being overshadowed by dread and anxiety for what was to come. Everything may have worked out in the end, but to her it never felt that way.

Shepard was secluding herself, leaning against the bar, nursing her 6th drink. Or was it her 10th? She didn’t particularly care at this point. She watched over the crowd that was being especially animated this evening. And why shouldn’t they be? It was a celebration after all. James and Ashley had just gotten married. It was the first time since the war that she had seen her entire old crew together in one place. It wasn’t that she wasn’t happy for them. Whatever happiness she was capable of feeling at this moment was entirely for them. They were two of her closest friends, and they were celebrating the rest of their lives together. It was a good thing, even she could see that, but it just wasn’t enough to get her out of her perpetual funk since the war ended.

She noticed some disheveled mountain looking man walk up to the bar, but barely paid any attention to him. She just assumed it must have been a family member of the bride or groom, and she wasn’t here to make small talk.

It wasn’t until she heard him order his drink that she recognized the voice. Someone she was afraid would likely be here, and had been somewhat relieved when she didn’t see him at the ceremony. She had purposely been avoiding him this whole time. Two years, and up until this moment she thought she might be able to put off this confrontation for an even more unhealthy amount of time.

The man leaned against the bar next to her, drink in hand, straightening his long beard before taking a sip. “Commander,” he said in way of acknowledging her presence.

“It’s Rear Admiral now, haven’t you heard?”

“Ah, no actually. I left the Alliance a while back. Or hadn’t you heard?”

“I guess I hadn’t,” she said quietly, staring at the floor. “It’s good to see you again, Joker.”

What I did in November

Oh November, why you so busy? I didn’t even do NaNoWriMo and you were still so busy. But I managed to write some things in October and finished them for publication in November. 

This month with artwork by @blasteddoodles! Look how fabulous it is!

A new chapter for our Inquisitor Carver Hawke. He gets attacked by red templars and runs around half naked fighting them. [Lost Templar in Skyhold, Chapter 7]

And as a special fic-art-exchange-gift, a story in the same universe, where Cullen falls in love with a bloodmage elf. [Under a Blood-Red Sky]

I have read some great stories this month: 

[Shoker: Marcus and Jeff] by [DAfan7711] @dafan7711, Mass Effect, Manshep x Joker. A lovely “speed run” through Joker developing a crush, heeding the regs and then finding that his CO actually likes him too.

[A Snippet of Time] by [BronzeAgeLove] @bronzeagelove, Mass Effect, FemShep x Garrus. I need to go back and start this fic from the beginning. I loved how this chapter features a Commander Shepard who deals with anxiety and is thoroughly spooked by the fight on the Citadel in ME1.

[Mirrors of Themselves] by Lykegenia , Dragon Age, F!Inquisitor x Cullen. A chilling glimpse into how to deal with the knowledge you gain about your companions and friends in the timetravel future. 

[Unraveled] by SoManyJacks @somanyjacks, Dragon Age, Alistair x Zevran. Alistair falls in love and thinks he doesn’t deserve it and Zevran falls in love and thinks he is not good enough for Alistair and I cried several times through this fic and it warmed my ice cold heart.

[A Chance Engagement] by hollyand @hollyand-writes, Dragon Age Regency AU, Merrill x Carver. I’m lagging behind on this fic! There’s already two more chapters for me to read and I’m savouring them for when I have the peace and quiet to enjoy them as they deserve. Every chapter is a delight and I’m even learning things!

13.  Describe your writing process from idea to polished 

Polished? 

I guess it’s ‘polished’ by the time it ends up on AO3. But to be entirely honest it goes from ‘little idea based on a collection of interactions’ to ‘something we actually shared with the world’. Sorry that I don’t have much of a process to follow, writing just happens with me. Though more recently it’s been ‘character interaction that I liked and wanted to expand upon’ to ‘setting I would’ve liked to see more of’ all the way to ‘sort of published story’. Plotting is not a strength of mine, at all. It just feels very daunting to be entirely honest, and then I tend to get turned off the idea all together. Planning ahead very loosely has bore some fruit though, thankfully.

17.  What writing habits or rituals do you have?

Habits mostly boil down to:

-Spending about 15 minutes trying to find a song or playlist to write a very specific scene to. (Cue the: “I just daydreamed about this last night to this exact song! Why doesn’t it work now?”) -Writing, deciding to go back and edit mid-sentence, forgetting my excellent train of thought as soon as I come back. -Reading...rereading, deciding I hate a chapter, fixing it, deciding I hate it more not fifteen minutes later. Deciding to ignore the part I was working on. -Getting a spark to write something so out of left field from the main work, fixating, realizing an hour has passed and I accidentally wrote 2.5k-3k words of pure gibberish. Gibberish I’ll publish out of spite, but gibberish regardless. -Singing along to the playlist and finding a beautiful idea for either before the main story, or so far forward in the story that I just get frustrated that I can’t use it now. -Very quickly backspacing a paragraph or two because it takes a turn I’d definitely get a few side eyes for. -And of course, never knowing HOW to finish a chapter. So, looking for quotes or scouring the chapter to figure out if I can unlock a memory a-la-Andromeda style to see if I have any idea how I intended to beforehand.

30.  Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet

Technically, I’ve started on all the ones I wanted to. It’s just hard for me to force myself to write for them if I’m bouncing in between fandoms and ideas. Except for the F!Shoker story I’ve had in the back of my mind for a while. It effectively boils down to a renegade!Citlali taking the place of her sister, and obviously, writing in the romance I was cheated out of (tl;dr coming up April ‘21, I’ll have been mad about this for over a year). Maybe darker themed than I’m used to, but all I know was that I still intended to have background Shenko in there somewhere.

35.  What scene/story are you least looking forward to writing?

Can I say the entirety of the rest of Redamancy?

In all seriousness that story is my baby, but I’d be absolutely lying if I said I knew how to fill in the blanks once I got out of the beginning. Sure, I am intending to expand upon what the game gave us and I have a...roadmap (if you could call it that) so that I don’t quit, as well as a lot of points I want to hit by the end, but romance? For someone fifteen years young and having only been in one relationship myself?

...Wish me luck! Character development here I come. (Andre definitely wasn’t overly ambitious about this, not at all). Hopefully your eyes don’t glaze over as soon as you open everything past chapter eight.

COMING UP WITH A LIST OF MASS EFFECT TAGS

There are different categories of content with a list of potential tags the Mass Effect trilogy and Mass Effect Andromeda fandom already uses. The goal of this post is to find the most popular tag used by the fandom to facilitate posting for content creators. 

If there is already a common popular tag in place like (CharacterA x CharacterB) we don't need to come up with a pairing name such as "beautiful lilac from the clouds", right?
