Juan Luna: The first Philippine native-born International Star
When we think of International stars from the Philippines, names like Lea Salonga, Dolly De Leon, Charice Pempengco, Arnel Pineda, and more come to mind. But for someone like me whose hobby is to read and study history, the first to come to mind is one of our national heroes, Juan Luna de San Pedro y Novicio Ancheta, or simply "Juan Luna."
Tumblr media
Born on October 23, 1857, as a creole, he was a painter, sculptor, and a political activist during the late 19th century Philippine Revolution. He's most famous for his masterpiece, 'Spoliarium,' and as the brother of General Antonio Luna.
When I heard the news that Juan Luna's painting, "Hymen, oh Hyménée!" also known as "The Holy Grail" of Philippine Art, had been found and would be displayed in the Ayala Museum, I knew I had to see it. Despite a busy schedule, I made the effort, and it was entirely worth it. The painting had won a Bronze Medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, France, catapulting Juan Luna to international fame and admiration. In an era when Filipinos were often seen as 'inferior,' Luna shattered stereotypes, proving that Filipinos could be great artists, earning international pride.
Tumblr media
Before its discovery, many Filipino art collectors and historians had no idea what happened to the painting. Some believed it was destroyed during the wartime destruction of Manila or by fire at the hands of Pardo de Tavera's after Luna tragically killed his wife and mother-in-law in 1892.
Tumblr media
Seeing the painting at the Ayala Museum's "Splendor" exhibition left me awestruck by its beauty, technique, genius, and intricate details. I stood there for about 20 minutes, pondering what was going through Luna's mind when he created this masterpiece. According to historian Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, "Hymen, oh Hyménée!" marked Luna's transition to becoming a "socially aware" artist. His subsequent works reflected the dark, impoverished, and corrupt society, making it difficult for him to sell paintings and leading to financial hardship.
Tumblr media
Juan Luna's life story was filled with greatness, yet also shrouded in darkness and violence. After being acquitted of charges related to the deaths of his wife and mother-in-law, Luna returned to the Philippines. He and his brother Antonio initially did not join the revolution but were later arrested. In 1898, he was appointed by the executive board of the Philippine revolutionary government and played a pivotal role in securing recognition for the Philippine republic in France and Washington D.C. After the tragic death of his brother General Antonio Luna, he returned to the Philippines, but ultimately, he passed away in Hong Kong in 1899.
Tumblr media
Studying the tumultuous life of Juan Luna prompts us to question whether he deserves a place among our national heroes. None of our national heroes are perfect; they were human, capable of mistakes and sins, and Juan Luna was no exception. Nevertheless, he provided us with something to be proud of, dismantling racist views about Filipinos. Juan Luna, like our other national heroes, earned his place not because of the mistakes and sins he made but because of his remarkable contributions, helping define what it means to be called a "Filipino" as the first Filipino international star."

Some images have a haunting quality that transcends their visual impact, carrying with them disturbing backstories that linger in the mind long after they're seen. These photos with creepy origins often depict moments of tragedy, horror, or the macabre, weaving narratives that evoke unease and fascination. Whether it's an innocuous scene tainted by a sinister history or a snapshot capturing a chilling event, these images with disturbing backstories tap into our primal fears and curiosity. From seemingly normal pictures with disturbing undertones to outright unsettling photographs, each image carries a tale that delves into the darker corners of human experience, leaving an indelible mark on those who encounter them.

It's felt weird not doing a new round of Astrological Playlists since the Aries one at the dawn of Spring. Of course *LEO* season would beckon me to dedicate some energy with a playlist dedicated to the season in the sky. There's a lot of *I* and *Me* in these declarative songs. They all center their characters needs as paramount, or give wise warning how not to screw it up for yourself. Most of the songs have at least a faint aura of the cinematic, while others are full on Douglass Sirk on Vinyl. For nearly 90 minutes, I hope you find catharsis by letting these songs get you in your feels with artists like Kim Weston, Cissy Houston, Madeline Bell, Dusty Springfield, Dee Dee Warwick, Thelma Jones and Timi Yuro.

COVERS RIBBON AROUND A BOMB
The best, weirdest interpretations of songs by other artists-- it's the RAAB covers episode. I've included the original artist in parentheses, along with my usual practice of identifying the year the track came out.

KISS YOU by One Direction is now 6years old, imagine 6years ago we've been trying to break the Vevo record to it's system itself. 😁😂
#FACTS
The track became the group's sixth top-ten hit in Ireland and the United Kingdom, while attaining top-forty positions in both Belgian territories (Flanders and Wallonia), as well as in Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The single peaked at number 46 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of 500,000 copies. One Direction performed "Kiss You" on both the UK and US versions of The X Factor and 3 major concert tours: Take Me Home Tour (2013), Where We Are Tour (2014) and On the Road Again Tour (2015).
An accompanying music video, designed to display the group's comedic timing, was directed by Vaughan Arnell, who had previously worked with the group on two other music videos. The clip depicts the band shooting various scenes via a green screen, which include sequences reminiscent of iconic music videos of songs such as the Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl", Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" and Rammstein's "Mein Land". The music video received 10.4 million views in a 24-hour period and positive commentary from reviewers, who appreciated its carefree, jubilant nature.
The song was included in the dancing game Just Dance 2014, and is also one of the select songs available on the demo version. Additionally, it is the final main track on the US edition of Now That's What I Call Music! 46.
