Pokemon Players: The friend ball is so rare in modern games I might never use mine. There would need to be a pokemon that both perfectly fits the appearance of the friend ball and is so undeniably friend shaped that it could melt anyone's heart.

Round 1: Match 5

Starting off the second quarter of Round 1 is another set of distinct looking competitors!

The Friend Ball, another of Kurt's signature Balls, shares some similarities with the Luxury Ball, but is definitely a Ball of its own! It has the standard catch multiplier in every situation of 1x, but the real magic happens after the Pokémon is caught. No matter the Pokémon, once in a Friend ball, it's friendship is set to 150- making friendship evolutions much easier! But for those playing older Generations (2-7 to be precise), friendship is set to 200! Who could want more for trainers looking to be close to their Pokémons?

The Premier Ball is a bit of an odd case- from a practical sense, it's functionally the same as a regular Poké Ball, but it's got its own style and is significantly less common! Normally, trainers can get their hands on these when they buy 10 Poké Balls at a time in a Mart, and this leads to it being the subject of an exploit where players can get their hands on essentially free Balls! In the Thrifty Megamart on Akala Island, players will always receive a coupon that cuts prices in half. When selling items, players usually receive half the selling price in exchange- so in the Megamart, it is possible to essentially buy and sell back items for no net loss or gain... unless you buy 10 Poké Balls! If you buy 10 Balls, get the free Premier Ball, and then sell the regular Poké Balls back, you lose no money but gain a free Ball! How neat is that?

Pokemon Card of the Day #2932: Friend Ball (Celestial Storm)

Friend Ball was another reprint from the e-series sets, this time from Skyridge. It was a bit odd, as the Item had you search your deck for a Pokemon with the same type as 1 of your opponent's Pokemon in play and put it into your hand. This was very reliant on the opponent so it wasn't used that often. There was some use for it in decks like Malamar, which could take advantage of the popularity of Tapu Lele-GX, and Zacian, who could make this work whenever a Jirachi was in play. It also worked better in popular decks due to the likelihood of mirror matches where type matching was quite easy. A copy or two was probably the max even in the most favorable decks, since it wasn't going to work every game and you needed more general purpose searching to cover that. Getting a Pokemon with no cost was quite impressive when it did work, of course, so it was quite tempting for popular types.

As a reminder that good exists out there, a coworker recently confessed to me that he found out his child is questioning their identity (kid's gender redacted for this post). The kid is keeping it from him, so he can't say anything to them or show that he knows, but he's doing his best to get mentally prepared and educated so that he'll be ready whenever his kid does feel comfortable enough come to him.

For context, this guy is a big, bulky middle aged dude who loves sports and typical outdoor "manly" activities. As his coworker and friend, I know he's a kind and sweet teddy bear of a person, but his kid probably views him as a stern, authoritarian figure, the way most teenagers view their parents. His family lives in a conservative area, so I'm sure between that, their dad's looks and interests, and the fact that their dad is a Figure of Authority, the kid is worried that they won't be accepted.

But you know what? When he found out about his kid, the first thing he did was reach out to his closest queer friend and ask for resources for parents of questioning children. His biggest fears are that his kid will be bullied or discriminated against and won't feel comfortable enough to be themself. His second action was to find himself a mentor in another parent who went the same situation (kid coming out in a conservative town). The other person is preparing him for some of the struggles his kid may face and the fights he may need to take on as a parent to make sure his kid is safe and treated well.

Something I want to emphasize for people focused on language as the primary method of allyship is that when we spoke, he used some outdated terms and thoughts about gender and sexuality. That does not make him bad. These were the terms and thinking used about questioning teenagers when he was growing up and he never needed to learn more current ones. But now that he does have that need, he's throwing himself in head first because that's his kid and he's darn well going to make sure that his kid feels welcomed and has a safe place to be themselves even if they never come out to him.

#I'm so proud and happy for my coworker and I've been trying to figure out how to let him know how amazing I think he is #what gets me the most is that he's keeping this super down low to avoid giving any hints to his kid #he has a lot of queer friends so he already is known as an ally but there's always a chance it will be different if it's family #and he took that chance and crumpled it up into a ball and slam dunked it into the garbage for three points #and decided that even if his kid wants to hide it from him for the rest of his life he will still do what he can to make their life better #pflag #parents doing their best #parenting win #good news #allyship

Do you cherish your friends? I certainly do! So that makes this choice rather awkward...

The Friend Ball narrowly beat out the Premier Ball in Round 1, seeing plenty of support and overcoming the more well known Ball. In Round 2, however, it's got another more unusual ball to contend with! The novelty can't carry it through alone!

The Cherish Ball won a healthy victory against the elusive GS Ball, possibly indicating that people prefer Balls they can actually keep Pokémon in? And now it comes face to face with a Ball you can actually catch with! Will it prove that people prefer to actually use throw the Ball to catch their Pokémon or does it not matter at all?
