"The book has seen immediate success in 2023, debuting as a number one New York Times bestselling novel. Readers love the irreverent fantasy world and the witty characters trying to make a living in a villain’s evil lair. Sure, the villain equips the lair with a top-notch break room, HR, and healthcare, but there are still the trappings of a villain’s daily activities, reminding employees they work for a bad guy. If you, too, can’t get enough of this world, read on for eight funny, romantic, and fantastical books like Assistant to the Villain!
The following books like Assistant to the Villain give readers who are eagerly awaiting book two something to read in the meantime. They are a combination of fantasy romance books that have a dash of action, romance, and comedy to keep any Hannah Nicole Maehrer fan happy. I am head over heels for the odd little subgenre myself, so I guarantee these books like Assistant to the Villain will hit the spot."

read my full review of holiday heroine by sarah kuhn here.
The sixth book in the smart, snarky, and action-packed Heroine series continues the adventures of Asian-American superheroine Bea Tanaka as she takes on demons in Hawaii.
Nobody loves Christmas like Bea Tanaka—so when her family visits her for a special holiday celebration, she’s beside herself with joy.
After years of chaos, questionable decisions, and flirtations with the supervillain path, Bea is finally thriving. She’s got a sweet, new gig hunting demons in Maui, she’s working hard to hone her powers, and her big sister Evie is proud of her at last. In fact, everyone is so proud of her that she can’t tell them the truth: she’s feeling lost and adrift. She and her boyfriend Sam Fujikawa are struggling to make their long-distance love work, and her powers are displaying some intriguing new elements—elements that could lead her down an evil, mind-controlling path once more.
When her family’s holiday visit is disrupted by otherworldly monsters rising out of the Maui ocean, Bea throws herself into the battle—until she’s suddenly and mysteriously transported to the perfect Christmas back in San Francisco, surrounded by her family and an excess of merrymaking.
As she finds herself trapped in the bizarre holiday rom-com of her nightmares, Bea must unravel a treacherous demon plot, save the world from unspeakable evil, and resist the siren song of a supervillain destiny. And hey, maybe she’ll find time for a little holiday cheer after all….
my review:
I’ve really enjoyed the Heroine Complex series over the past few years, and I’m a bit sad to let these characters go. However, we have to say goodbye eventually and it was nice to see where they all end up. Holiday Heroine was a decent finale that wrapped up Bea’s story nicely.
After moving to Hawai’i to gain her independence, Bea is thriving — or so she wants you to think. In truth, she’s lonely and homesick, especially with all the issues she’s been having with her long-distance boyfriend Sam. When the entire crew comes to visit, a beach trip goes awry after a giant monster attacks them. Then Bea suddenly finds herself transported to months in the future in San Francisco. She must uncover who’s behind the attack, as well as learning more about her new time-travelling power.
Although we’ve seen snippets of Bea in the last two books, it was interesting to return to her point-of-view and see how she’s actually very lonely. She’s also been stifling herself in the name of “maturing herself,” toning down her loud energy to conform more. Her bright personality still shines through though, and I was glad to see how she eventually realizes that she’s at her best when she’s herself.

Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story by Sarah Kuhn, Arielle Jovellanos (Illustrator)
Can Lois Lane open herself up to friendship, romance, and being vulnerable in order to get the future that's right for her?  She might have to change her entire life plan to find out. Ambitious small town girl Lois Lane tackles a summer in the big city with gusto, but a cavalcade of setbacks—including an annoying frenemy roommate, a beyond tedious internship at a suddenly corporatized website, and a boss who demotes her to coffee-fetching minion—threatens to derail her extremely detailed life plan. And, you know, her entire future. When Lois uncovers a potentially explosive scandal, she must team up with the last person she’d expect to publish her own website for young women. And as Lois discovers who she really is and what she actually wants, she becomes embroiled in her own scandal that could destroy everything she's worked so hard to create. From beloved author, Sarah Kuhn (Shadow of the Batgirl, Heroine Complex ), and with expressive and lively art by Arielle Jovellanos, comes a charming YA story about the strength it takes to embrace the messiness of life.
Review: I'm a fan of Heroine Complex, so you can imagine how excited I was to read Shadow of the Batgirl back in 2020 (review here!) -- Shadow of the Batgirl was just a ton of fun. So naturally, I had to read Girl Taking Over by Sarah Kuhn. Not just because I'm loving what DC Comics is doing in the YA graphic novel space, but because I'm a huge fan of Arielle Jovellanos's art.
Lois Lane is having a bit of a moment right now, especially with the new cartoon out. So it was fun to get into spirit by reading this particular Lois Lane story. It's a delightful, Asian American take on the scrappy teen reporter. Superman and Clark Kent are nowhere in sight, and the focus is solely on Lois Lane's story and her beginnings.
Lois and her once upon a time childhood friend who's not so friendly now discover that they're roommates for the summer while they pursue their passions. Of course, their summers don't go as planned, and the two Japanese American teens find themselves taking on injustice in their own unique ways to make their voices heard.
The art is colorful, high-energy, and so much fun. It goes hand-in-hand with Lois Lane's story and I really hope Jovellanos illustrates more DC comics in the future. The story is fairly straightforward and, like superhero stories tend to, requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. But if you're looking a fun, feel-good, inspirational story, this is it.
Get this wonderful graphic novel soon if you're interested in Lois Lane's story or just want a fun, hopeful YA graphic novel read for your summer.
Recommendation: Get it soon!

The schedule is official, which means we can announce the details of our panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! 💫 Here’s the blurb:
Over the past decade, fans and creators have had more access to each other than ever before—and sometimes, the results have been painful. How can creators take in fan feedback without altering their work in a reactionary way? How can fans express good-faith critique without placing demands on creators? Featuring panelists who spend time on both sides of the fan/creator divide: Sarah Kuhn (the Heroine Complex series, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra) Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), Britta Lundin (Riverdale, Betty), Justin Bolger (StarWars.com, Fantasy Fight Games), and Flourish Klink (Fansplaining), moderated by Elizabeth Minkel (Fansplaining).
If you’re coming to SDCC, we’d love to see you there! We’ll likely meet up afterwards at the Marriott pool bar—our traditional spot, but v convenient given our panel location and time this year—but need to confirm those details. That’s wholly outside, and as you likely already know if you’re attending, proof of vax/negative test + mask wearing will be mandatory inside the con.
[Flier alt-text: Sparkly, outer-space-esque background in magenta/purple. Book/Author recs:
Sarah Kuhn's series starting with Heroine Complex
J. Kathleen Cheney - The Golden City (there are at least 2 books after that)
I love Mercedes Lackey but I feel that specifically the Diana Tregarde Investigations would be more up your alley than some of the other series
T.A. Willberg's books with Marion Lane Lee
Gail Carriger - I've read all of the Parasol Protectorate but haven't started The Custard Protocol as of yet, mostly because I know I will need the rest of the series because I won't want to wait on shipping
And if you want some light mysteries (+ suspension of disbelief) I'd recommend Juneau Black's Shady Hollow Mysteries
Thanks! I'll add them to my list

Heroine Complex
Heroine Complex is a series about badass Asian superheroines who fight demons and talk about their feelings. There’s also a whole bunch of queer characters! Nobody here seems to know that and I want to change it! I will be talking about each of the books and a lot of the characters on this blog. Let me jumpstart this fandom!

I lifted my head and looked around blearily, trying to get a grip on my surroundings. I was in my bed, wearing what appeared to be one of Nate's T-shirts. My right arm was pinned to the mattress by Nate, his arms locked around my waist, soft snores escaping his lips. Lucy was on top of my left shoulder, her lashes fluttering against her cheeks as she breathed in and out. And Bea was sleeping curled around my feet, as if protecting them from nefarious toe fetish demons.

Read-A-Likes for The Good Place GIFs
We all know The Good Place is over but their gifs live on forever. For all of you missing the gang going through endless versions of the afterlife, trying their best to do the next good thing, here are some other good things. Read-A-Likes for a small spattering of gifs from The Good Place. *dink; duh-da-duh-daaa duh-da-da-duh*
Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn: we have ourselves a superheroes assistant turned superhero in a town overrun with all kinds of people and objects causing a ruckus with magic powers. We are also given a cinnamon bun who, much like Chidi, is a bit of a lab-dork. The will they won’t they reveal he too is a bit of an emotional marshmallow with a surprising set of abs.
Tumblr media
The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi: is a book that gives everyone a heap of sadness that they try to keep to themselves. Our crew of damaged human beings gets together to track down an ancient magic artifact hidden somewhere in Paris. Their friendships are tested as they break the code and uncover each-others painful realities.
Tumblr media
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson: when you have a main character who will do anything for glory, you end up having a lot of people who urgently shout “NO!” in their direction. In a world where humanity has retreated underground after a series of alien attacks, the pilots who defend the planet are heroes. Her own father used to be a hero before he was widely regarded as a coward. So her death-defying antics can be forgiven occasionally.
Tumblr media
A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee: At first glance, you would never expect a Grand Tour to be so well researched and well developed. The novel explores complicated notions of sexuality, able-bodiedness, and gender in a mostly unchaperoned trip across the European continent. Almost everything goes horribly wrong but hey, when you are traveling with a burgeoning doctor, violinist, and resident talker almost anything is possible.
Tumblr media
Scythe By Neal Shusterman: Who would have thought that even when an advanced AI has discovered all possible knowledge and cured all pain, including death the human race would still have serious problems? Readers lie in wait as two teens go through the process of being selected and trained as Scythes, professional murderers placed in charge of culling the population. The messiness of the planet carefully controlled, but no AI can account for all the small ways humans continue to make choices.

read my full review of hollywood heroine by sarah kuhn here.
The fifth book in the smart, snarky, and action-packed Heroine series continues the adventures of Asian-American superheroines Evie Tanaka, Aveda Jupiter, and Bea Tanaka in a demon-infested San Francisco.
Over the years, the adventures of superheroines Aveda Jupiter and Evie Tanaka have become the stuff of legend–and now they’ll be immortalized in their very own TV show!
The pair head to LA for filming, but Aveda struggles to get truly excited. Instead, she’s preoccupied wondering about the fate of the world and her role in it. You know, the usual. Now that Otherworld activity has been detected outside the Bay Area, Aveda can’t help but wonder if the demon threat will ever be eradicated.
When the drama on set takes a turn for the supernatural, Evie and Aveda must balance their celebrity commitments with donning their superhero capes again to investigate. And when the evil they battle reveals a larger, more nefarious plot, it’s time for the indomitable Aveda Jupiter to rise to the occasion and become the leader she was meant to be on a more global scale–and hopefully keep some semblance of a personal life while doing so.
my review:
I’ve been a fan of this series for a while now, and I was so excited for the next release! It made a perfect spooky read for October too. Hollywood Heroine follows our beloved superheroines as they solve another otherworldly mystery, this time involving vampires in Hollywood.
This review contains spoilers for the previous books in this series.
In the aftermath of the previous book, Aveda and Evie head to LA to check out the filming of the show based on their lives. Aveda still worries constantly: about Evie and her baby, about ensuring everyone whom she loves is happy, and especially about the future. She’s working non-stop, and Evie and Scott convinces her that this would be a great time for a vacation. Unfortunately, demons never rest, and the three of them, as well as their new assistant Pippa and Bea over FaceTime, uncover a new infestation of demons, this time manifesting as vampires.
It was fun returning to this world and seeing this cast of characters again! I also love how Bea is included (on FaceTime) despite being hundreds of miles away. The group’s dynamic is so great to read, and I always love seeing the love they all hold for each other. Aveda and Evie’s relationship has been the heart of the series since the very beginning, and of course, I love seeing more of their strong, unbreakable friendship. I also liked reading more about Aveda and Scott together!

Review: Heroine Worship – Sarah Kuhn
(Book 2 of the Heroine Complex series) Annnnd we’re back with the second installment of Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn. (I am a dope and didn’t do a review for the first book so here we are. So sorry folks, I’m a space cadet.) In this book we are reintroduced to all the characters from book one as well as some new additions to team Aveda Jupiter. This book is told from Aveda’s point of view and chronicles her sometimes vain attempts to become less of a diva and be a better friend than she has previously.
Initially, I was disappointed that this book wouldn’t be told from Evie’s point of view. I had grown to love her dearly over the course of the first book and, to be honest; I wasn’t the biggest fan of Aveda. However, once I delved into it, Aveda (aka Annie)’s voice really added to the continuing story AND even though it is very definitely Aveda’s story, it still had the characters we fell in love with from the first book and almost more shenanigans than one book could possibly hold.
I won’t lie though. For most of the book it was difficult for me to like Aveda. I suppose that it would be hard to change when you’ve more or less been your own here for so long, but even though she actively tries to change she doesn’t seem to get it. Taking control of someone else’s wedding, going against their wishes for said wedding, and being INCREDIBLY bossy, doesn’t make you a good friend. It just makes you spectacularly annoying even when you’re on the outside looking in and realize that the poor, dense little chicken nugget is doing her best. As the book goes on though you realize how hard she’s actually trying and find out the reasoning behind why this change is so hard for her and, ultimately, it really does make her a more sympathetic character. My only genuine complaint is that this didn’t happen sooner in the book!
As a whole, this book lives up to the hype left by its predecessor. It left me guessing right up until the very end as to who was committing these dastardly acts and had a twist that I never saw coming! There’s just the right amount of romance and action entwined with Aveda’s story and it left me excited to read the next and final book in the series which I plan to do sometime in the near(ish) future.
5/5 stars

Please read Sarah Kuhn’s article on writing her new book during a pandemic, with a terrible rise in anti-Asian racism, and still keeping a hopeful story with a happy ending. A story that connects her to her late mother, whom she keeps alive in her words, and a reminder that anger doesn’t have to be a negative emotion.
Ms. Kuhn is the author of the fantastic Heroine Complex series, the novels Love You So Mochi and From Little Tokyo with Love, Shadow of the Batgirl for DC and recently wrote the Star Wars audio adventure Doctor Aphra (so fun, give it a listen or you can buy her works at Bookshop.org)

New Releases
It's another week, which means more books launching on Tuesday! Exciting stuff. Here's what's coming up next:
Three Kisses, One Midnight: A Novel by Roshani Chokshi, Sandhya Menon, and Evelyn Skye
The town of Moon Ridge was founded 400 years ago and everyone born and raised there knows the legend of the young woman who perished at the stroke of twelve that very same night, losing the life she was set to embark on with her dearest love. Every century since, one day a year, the Lady of Moon Ridge descends from the stars to walk among the townsfolk, conjuring an aura upon those willing to follow their hearts’ desires.
“To summon joy and love in another’s soul For a connection that makes two people whole For laughter and a smile that one can never miss Sealed before midnight with a truehearted kiss.”
This year at Moon Ridge High, a group of friends known as The Coven will weave art, science, and magic during a masquerade ball unlike any other. Onny, True, and Ash believe everything is in alignment to bring them the affection, acceptance, and healing that can only come from romance—with a little help from Onny’s grandmother’s love potion. But nothing is as simple as it first seems. And as midnight approaches, The Coven learn that it will take more than a spell to recognize those who offer their love and to embrace all the magic that follows.
Lord of the Fly Fest by Goldy Moldavsky One of Us Is Lying meets Lord of the Flies meets Fyre Fest in this wickedly addictive and funny YA thriller.
Rafi Francisco needs something really special to put her true crime podcast on the map. She sets her sights on River Stone, the hearthrob musician who rose to stardom after the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. Rafi lands herself a ticket to the exclusive Fly Fest, where River will be the headliner.
But when Rafi arrives on the Caribbean island location of Fly Fest with hundreds of other influencers and (very minor) celebrities, they quickly discover that the dream trip is more of a nightmare. And it’s not just confronting beauty gurus-gone-wild and spotty WiFi. Soon, Rafi goes from fighting for an interview to fighting for her life. And, as she gets closer to River, she discovers that he might be hiding even darker secrets than she suspected . . .

The Dragon’s Promise (Six Crimson Cranes #2) by Elizabeth Lim
Princess Shiori made a deathbed promise to return the dragon’s pearl to its rightful owner, but keeping that promise is more dangerous than she ever imagined.
She must journey to the kingdom of dragons, navigate political intrigue among humans and dragons alike, fend off thieves who covet the pearl for themselves and will go to any lengths to get it, all while cultivating the appearance of a perfect princess to dissuade those who would see her burned at the stake for the magic that runs in her blood.
The pearl itself is no ordinary cargo; it thrums with malevolent power, jumping to Shiori’s aid one minute, and betraying her the next—threatening to shatter her family and sever the thread of fate that binds her to her true love, Takkan. It will take every ounce of strength Shiori can muster to defend the life and the love she’s fought so hard to win.
