Remembrance of Harlan’s Valiant Workers’ Insurrection
Remembrance of Harlan’s Valiant Workers’ Insurrection
By Colby T. In the light of Labor Day, a holiday in celebration of the worker, I would like to remember the valiant efforts of the men of the 2019 Harlan County coal miners’ protest. These five men rallied for their beliefs against the company they worked for, which shortcutted them during a time of financial bankruptcy, known as Blackjewel. On Monday, July 29th – a vigilant resident near the…

free to watch communist/anti capitalist documentaries on youtube!
please be aware that most of these have extreme racism (not framed as good, but rather the uncensored experience of people of color) as well as on screen tragedy and death (at least in ‘the war you don’t see’)
thomas sankara, the upright man- a deeper look into an often overlooked communist leader
youtube
harlan county USA- about unionization efforts in harlan and working class solidarity
youtube
an injury to one- another union doc but truly a memorable one. this’ll make you fucking angry.
youtube
the war you don’t see- an investigation into media complacency and participation in imperialism
youtube
black power mixtape- just a fantastically informative and well done piece on black revolutionaries in america
youtube
the passion of the mao- a kind of silly and occasionally goofy but extremely informative piece of mao. definitely easy watching.
youtube
free angela and all political prisoners- a piece that focuses in on imprisonment of black activists and political prisoners in america in general (says free with ads? idk i watched on youtube and it was fine.)
youtube
surplus: terrorized into being consumers- gut wrenching discussion of capitalist consumer culture but worth a watch.
youtube
born rich- a nepo baby makes a doc about his rich friends. this is peak radicalization shit. this will make you fume.
youtube
add on with links if you have more!!

I miss the big rec posts of old, so… I’m gonna do one.  And I'm going to be real extra about it. I’ve read & reread a variety of things over the past few months that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, and figured hey, y'all might enjoy them as well.  Is there a rhyme or reason?  Of course not.  Are they all new?  Hell no, that’s the joy of an archive.  I also realized like half of them are spooky season themed, so... *shrugs* viva la spooky season.
Game of Thrones
Dornish Sand by Aviss - (E, 5K, Oberyn/Ellaria/Jamie/Brienne)
Jamie & Brienne go to Dorne, and the four of them bone.  Why there aren’t more of these four together, I don’t know.  More fics should be about sexy folks worshiping Brienne and this definitely hits it.
Royal Flush by @astolat - (E, 85K, various)
Canon divergence - what if during the Battle of Blackwater Robb found his way into King’s Landing, rescued Sansa, and killed Joffrey?  Where does the game go from there?  That’s the premise and it really is best to ignore the tags and discover the story as it goes because it is deeply engrossing and this is the type of story where being surprised and watching the chess match unfold is part of the fun.
Justified
Bad Apple Blues by @laporcupina  - (NR, 7K, Gen)
A S1 day in the life of Raylan at work, including but not limited to a hostage situation where the whole team gets to show off what they’re good at.  From one of my favorite gen writers, no matter what fandom they’re writing in.
In the Heart of the Holler by scioscribe - (T, 4K, Gen)
The stories say there's a place in Harlan County that will grant your wish on Halloween night.  Raylan thinks Loretta should stay the hell away from it.  Another one to head into spooky season.  Because as someone who grew up in a rural area, some places are just creepy as fuck and this has the vibes.
Underground by @sholiofic - (T, 3K, Gen)
Another preview to spooky season (do I have a thing for Appalachian scares?  apparently) with Raylan, Tim, and Rachel chasing a fugitive into what feels like a haunted mine.  There are far too many things you can only see from the corner of your eye that far underground.
The Mandalorian/Star Wars
ain’t no road i like as well as the road that leads to you by getmean - (T, 3K, Din/Cobb)
Post-BOBF, Din, Cobb, and Grogu go relax on a planet that is moist and green and definitely not Tatooine.  It’s soft, it’s sweet, and good lord the three of them deserve a break.
Find His Way Back by @catchclaw - (M, 9K, Din/Cobb/Obi-Wan)
What if Din and Cobb met 10 years earlier, and they ran into Tatooine’s favorite hermit and had to hunker down for the night?  It’s exactly what you hope it is, and turned me on to a new trio.
Hold Fast by @staranon95 - (E, 21K, Din/Cobb)
Post-S2, Din returns to Tatooine looking for peace, but he’s haunted by the darksabre, both literally and figuratively.  Cobb’s not doing much better.  Some of the best haunted by your past AND actually haunted that I’ve read and perfect going into spooky season.
Lest You Be Shining by @brightmouth - (M, 10K, Din/Cobb)
Cobb Vanth falls in love in the crux of a new era and it only hurts a little bit. It’s the 1960s, Cobb is an engineer working for NASA and Din is an astronaut.  Y’all, the absolute vibes on this one.
take my revolution by @saltsprite - (E, 34K, Din/Cobb)
Take Din, Mandalore, and the darksaber, and make it Revolutionary Girl Utena. My 90s anime fan self couldn’t resist.
A Waste of Water by @magess - (E, WIP, Din/Cobb)
Din’s come back to Tatooine, Cobb’s past has come back to haunt him.  This one is currently a WIP, but the world building is great, the original characters feel fleshed out, and new chapters drop once a week.  I look forward to it every week.
MCU
Can’t Keep a Good Man Down by @roboticonography - (M, 10K, Steve/Peggy)
After the serum, Steve has to deal with a persistent side effect. In his pants.  Did I get in the mood after Jen’s excitement in She-Hulk over Cap fucking to go back to an old favorite of the genre?  Yes.  This is exactly what you want it to be.
Rhythm, Interrupted by @staranon95 - (T, 1K, Gen)
Marc tries to keep his presence as minimal as possible in Steven's life for his protection even if Khonshu doesn't understand why.  I have such a soft spot for Marc trying to care for Steven before Steven realizes what’s going on, and this scratches that itch beautifully.  It’s short, it’s soft, it's what I wanted.
Ted Lasso
bell, book, and candle by fakelight - (T, 5K, Gen)
“There is something strange,” Ted announces gravely, standing in front of the whiteboard. “In our neighborhood. Well, our treatment room. But, you know, our general vicinity.” In large letters above his head, Beard finishes writing WHO YOU GONNA CALL? AFC RICHMOND.  A silly way into spooky season, for a change lol
Our Flag Means Death
The Keeper by @r0b0tb0y - (E, 7K, Ed/Stede)
Edward Teach becomes a lighthouse keeper. Everything goes wrong.  Another one perfect as we move into spooky season because it’s cosmic horror meets sea shanties.  And one you don’t want to know too much going into because the discovery is part of the fun.
Like the Sea Around the Shore by @the-cimmerians - (E, 51K, Ed/Stede)
Are you looking for a fic that could easily be the first few eps of S2?  This is that fic. Ed and Stede find their way back to each other, the crew of The Revenge finds a way to talk it through as a crew, and a goldmine of callbacks and anachronisms are sprinkled through like the most fun easter egg hunt.  I can’t articulate how much I love this fic from an author who never disappoints.
A Night at Blackbeard’s Bar and Grill by soft_october - (T, 6K, Ed/Stede)
Restaurant AU. The manager at the new restaurant Stede is trying to review is being kind of a dick. A certain member of the waitstaff, however, takes a bit of a liking to him.  It’s fun, it’s light, it’s a delight.
The Sandman
Things That Never Happened In History Class by darth_stitch - (T, 2K, Dream/Hob)
Prof Hob teaches History 101, other immortals from other media make an appearance, it’s fun, it’s light, it’s a delight.  And Hob still gets irritated over Shakespeare.

any movie recs??? 👀
oh anon, i love you and you have no idea the can of worms you have just opened. heck yeah do i have movie recs...
movies i've loved recently:
Rye Lane {incredible modern rom-com, awesome lead performances, gorgeous to look at, takes the "one chaotic day together" narrative structure and runs full speed with it}
Bound {the wachowskis' first movie! a very intense neo-noir thriller. the directing is giving "we're already conceptualizing the matrix" which means they direct the hell out of it}
Harlan County, USA and American Dream {both essential documentaries by Barbara Kopple about union efforts in Pennsylvania in the 70s and Minnesota in the 80s respectively. if you're then looking for a narrative feature with similar themes, Norma Rae is great}
Duck Soup / The Gold Rush / The General {three classics of the Hollywood Golden Age for one! go with Chaplin's The Gold Rush if you want snowy antics in Alaska, Buster Keaton's The General if you wanna see a guy almost die on a train many, many times, and the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup if you want a sharp-witted satire on fascism and war}
movies i personally never shut about:
All the President's Men {it's so sexy when people are good at their jobs! especially if that job is journalist who takes down the nixon administration! if you want a thriller that isn't bloody or overtly sexual, this is the thriller for you!}
The Full Monty {a comedy i believe everyone needs to watch. a 90 minute delight about a group of unemployed blue-collar guys trying to stage a strip show. given it came out in 1997, it's not nearly as dated as you think it'll be and stars a tumblr sexyman hall of famer, Robert Carlyle}
The Vast of Night {weird to describe a movie as gentle sci-fi horror, but that's exactly what this is. it centers around one eerie night in a 1950s town where the local radio station manager and a telephone operator begin picking up strange signals. it has vibes for days and does a lot with a very simple story and small budget}
Cure {...okay, this movie is not for everyone, but if you're down for a very unsettling horror movie, i cannot recommend this one highly enough. the premise is a detective investigating a series of murderers where each murderer has no memory of committing the crime. one of the best-directed movies i've ever seen. like it'll have you holding your breath in scene after scene}
The Last Waltz {since i recommended two other documentaries, i can't resist also recommending my favorite. it's Martin Scorsese's concert film of The Band's final show together. a great movie to put on in the background while cooking / doing chores since it's mostly musical performances, or you can do what i do and stare at Rick Danko the entire time!}
okay, i'll quit while i'm ahead now. if you're looking for movies in a specific genre (drama, comedy, romance, horror, sci-fi, sci-fi horror, horror comedy, romantic comedy with a dash of horror, throw me anything), let me know! i seriously could talk about movies for the rest of my life.

yeah, this guy's not mad about anything, totally not.
small side note: billy bragg's version of this song uses updated lyrics specific to the margaret thatcher era in britain. the original was written by a woman named florence reece, wife of a union organizer during the harlan county war. in a fit of rage after j.h. blair's thugs invaded her home, trashed it, and terrified her children, she scrawled down the lyrics to the song on a torn piece of a calendar, which is absolutely the most badass way to write anything.
happy labor day 2023 guys.

Random observations.
It's really interesting to me that this song has been around since 1931 (possibly 1912 and updated in 31 by the writer), was originally written by a woman (Florence Reece), and was written (Updated) because of the Harlan County War which was part of the "Coal wars" between miners trying to get decent working conditions and mine operators/nation guard/strike breakers. Just, there used to be SUCH a big thing about workers conditions and unions and all.

There's reasons I associate Silco so much with mining stuff.

"Which Side are You On?" but you're ambushing the mining company's motorcade on it's way to Harlan
552,151 views Premiered Oct 16, 2021 EVARTS In the light of current events: https://www.ft.com/content/98e17738-e... "The Battle of Evarts occurred [...] during the Harlan County Wars. The coal miners desired improved working conditions, higher wages, and more housing options for their families. These reasons, along with other factors, led the miners to go on strike. It ended when the Kentucky National Guard was called in to break it up. [...] The 'Battle of Evarts' began on the morning of May 5, 1931. The [mining] company had ordered a motorcade to drive to Harlan to deliver goods to the 'Scabs" there. [...] The striking miners waited for the motorcade near the Evarts railroad, and as the motorcade approached them, a single shot rang out. [...] The exchange of gunfire lasted for fifteen minutes, with an estimated 1,000 shots being fired. When it ended, the three deputies and one miner lay dead." - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ngl talking about caroline being southern with my mutuals has like. made me remember how much I love and miss connecting with my southern culture. rambling under cut
So of course, white southern culture has specific connotations that I fucking despise. That’s not what I’m talking about here, please don’t misread this and fuck everything that maga southern culture stands for. Anyways.
The area of the south I’m from is actually not considered super southern. Without doxxing myself, I live in an area that, these days, is pretty suburban and wealthy for the most part with little to no southern culture present. We’ve got a lot of data centers and one of America’s largest airports. Almost EVERYONE who lives here moved in in the last 50 years-nobody here has lived here for more than one or two generations.
Except for my family. We’ve been in this area since maybe 1790. Some of my family branched off and settled and lived in Harlan, Kentucky-lots of us still do. My grandpa’s side was active in the Harlan County Coal Wars, but I digress. We’ve been in my state for a real long time, ever since it was all farmland. But now, nobody else is really like that. Some of the old folk, sure, but nobody my age, really. But that southern culture was alive and well in this area before people started coming in. Before cultures blended and mixed in the DC area, we were all country hicks basically. And in my family, that’s been passed down. We still keep our traditions. We have green bean casserole. We have banana puddin and my dad and grandpa’s side has a lot of black southern culture, even if it’s not in my blood specifically. Growing up, sundays were for church (have issues with church but whatever), sweet tea is meant to be syrupy, you know how to garden, we make apple pies from scratch, we can tomatoes each summer. A lot of southern areas are impoverished, and this kind of farming/sustainability/thriftiness lives on due to that. I remember learning to fish in my papaw’s pond. I remember running around barefoot in the summer and getting sunburnt to hell and back. I remember walmart sermons, crossing your ankles and getting dolled up for sunday service, food after mass, even my great grandma insisting vanilla xtract is the only perfume a woman ever needs-apparently a common thing among old soutehrn ladies. I have some tias on my dad’s side- again, I’m pretty sure I’m all white by blood but my families are kind of mixing pots. I grew up hearing spanish at family reunions. Speaking of family reunions, they’re HUGE and I knew maybe 15 of the hundred people there, not even kidding. They’re huge events. people would fly in from florida for the reunions. Your grannies are gonna make you quilts and you’re gonna love them. There’s a video of me as a kid saying the word ‘red’- “rayyy-uhd”. I’ve since lost most of the drawl but I kept the lazy kind of accent, where I don’t announciate everything. So instead of ‘I don’t announciate everything’ I’d say “Ah don’t announciate everythin’.” Idk. I’m just kind of emotional about it for some reason.

what is a history period/place/event (or series of events) that isn’t as talked about that you love to learn/talk about?
The Coal Miner strikes in Appalachia
It's a very underrated, but crucial part of American history in learning about strikes and unions and how crucial they are to protecting workers rights. Look up Coal Creek War, Harlan County War, and Battle of Blair Mountain to learn more.
Appalachia as a whole is a very underrated area with very rich history and culture that deserves more appreciation and respect.

"On Being Asked To Write A Poem Against The War In Vietnam" by Hayden Carruth
Well I have and in fact more than one and I’ll tell you this too
I wrote one against Algeria that nightmare and another against
Korea and another against the one I was in
and I don’t remember how many against the three
when I was a boy Abyssinia Spain and Harlan County
and not one breath was restored to one
shattered throat mans womans or childs not one not
one but death went on and on never looking aside
except now and then with a furtive half-smile to make sure I was noticing.
