People have such an obsessive need to be right. In general people in Hollywood TEND to be short and petite. Most men don’t want to be on camera with taller women, and so they absolutely cast depending on height. Even Z mentioned this, she was worried about Spider-Man bc she thought she’d be too tall and then they had chairs in the audition room and that wasn’t a factor for them. No one is saying there isn’t tall actors… they just aren’t the standard. All people were saying is that attributing all of JE’s success to his height isn’t a fair point. Why that anon needed to come back with a list of actors above 6 foot is beyond me

Thanks Anon. :) I don't think the other Anon was insisting on being right....I mean, technically, we're ALL right.... Most actors are shorter than avg/or avg height, BUT, there are tall actors out here. You'll usually be able to spot them out though cuz they typically tower over most people, most co-stars, and most fans lol. 😅🤣

But yea, the tall woman syndrome in Hollywood is most definitely a thing. Just ask Zendaya, Nicole Kidman, or any other woman who is pretty tall. It's a thing because most actors are short. And unfortunately, people still have a silly bias against height. As if, someone's height determines their acting talent. 🙄 They can use camera angles and even boxes (I think Natalie Portman had to stand on a box sometimes in some of her scenes with Hayden Christensen ROTFL🤣) in order to hide how short an actor (or actress) is compared to their scene partner. Or, sometimes they'll just make one person sit down, and the other person stand up, so the height difference isn't as noticeable. (I noticed this with Nicole Kidman and her co-star Sean Penn in a film I saw years ago lol)

It's very subtle, but you'll be able to spot it if you know what to look for.

But yea, trying to attribute JE's success to his height is kind of silly, since (IMO) he hasn't even really gotten that far in the industry yet. Like, we just talked about Barry Keoghan... He's an Oscar nominated actor who has worked with some of Hollywood's finest. He may not be at the same fame level as some other actors out here, but compared to JE, I'd say Barry has the more lucrative filmography and career. JE is still very "green" (imo) in the industry. I'm sure he'll get there eventually in the fame and status dept..... But as for right now, he's still learning, growing, and getting some film roles on the big screen under his belt imo.

Today’s installment of “I watch Hayden Christensen’s filmography and tell you how pretty he is in it” is Awake (2007).

Hayden is Clay Beresford Jr, heir to a billion dollar fortune who’s struggling to escape the shadow of his deceased businessman father. His heart is torn between his loving but overprotective mother and his beautiful girlfriend Sam, who he’s scared his mother will not approve of. Oh and that heart? It’s weak and he needs a transplant. But when the anesthesia for his heart surgery fails to fully put him under he discovers a sinister plot.

How pretty is he in it?

Ridiculously gorgeous, a damn dream. None of those billionaire romance books on Kindle Unlimited can compare.

Does he get drenched at some point? A classic Hayden in a Tub scene happens in the first five minutes and what a drenching it is. 4💦 out of 5

How’s the movie itself: If you have any familiarity with hospitals and cardiology, the medical scenes will likely make you go “wow that’s not how it works at all.” But if you can manage to suspend your disbelief regarding the medical stuff and focus on the suspense and drama of the plot it’s a decent psychological thriller. It’s also very beautifully shot with a ridiculously good-looking cast.

Is the RottenTomato rating unfairly low?: it’s sits at 23% and I feel it should be at least double that, it has a solid cast that give good performances all around and a very intriguing premise.

Surprise Star Wars!: Hayden playing a character with mommy issues and having a secret, somewhat forbidden love affair is a little familiar. A more tangible Star Wars tie is Awake writer and director Joby Harold would go on to be a head writer for the Obi Wan Kenobi series, aka Hayden’s triumphant return to Star Wars (Hayden thanked Joby specifically in his Saturn award acceptance speech).

In Short: The fascinating (if not entirely plausible) premise and overall beautiful look (and cast) makes this one of Hayden’s better films. And if nothing else it contains great inspo for your modern AU Anakin/Star Wars fics. (also has a couple adorable Hayden bloopers)

What exactly is an industry plant and how do you know they are? You mention Timothy Chalamet in your tags is he one too?. Who else?

okay so an industry plant is typically an artist (usually a musician or actor) who has significant financial and/or cultural backing, but promotes themselves as having a homegrown/humble origins. it's a term more commonly used in the music industry, but it can be applied to Hollywood as well. while in Hollywood, ppl might be upfront about having famous parents, I also classify industry babies (relatives of those in the industry) as a form of industry plant in a lot of cases.

It can be tricky spotting industry plants, but there's a couple of factors that are strong indicators, especially in combination.

They Have Wealthy Family And Play It Down

Note, I say wealthy, not famous. A lot of actors have wealthy families who aren't famous, but who's status and wealth would have undeniably helped them get a leg up in the industry over working actors who lack the connections. Actors like Emma Stone, Timmy Chalamet, Olivia Wilde, Ariana Grande, and the Mara sisters come from wealthy backgrounds that allowed them to go to posh acting schools and pursue acting from a young age. Chalamet literally dated Madonna's daughter when he was in high school at LaGuardia. Industry babies/plants will avoid talking about this though because it interferes with the false narrative that they worked super duper hard to get the roles they've done.

Their Filmography Is Very...Curated

Here's the thing about Hollywood industry plant and/or babies, their filmography is very on brand because industry plants choose projects that play to their strengths. More so, there will also be a very quick jump in their filmography from TV to film and/or from indie film to mainstream. This is because they're not acting to work and be paid so they can live, they have the safety net of family wealth. They can be choosy and curate their image that way. If you want examples, Tom Holland's filmography is not only relatively sparse, with a massive jump between being on the BBC and literally being spiderman, but it's also very branded, protected and consistent as if he was being planted to play very specific roles. To contrast with an actors of similar ages who are likely not industry babies/plants like Madison Iseman, Tati Gabrielle, Leah Lewis, Asa Butterfield - their filmographies are far more varied, which speaks to them not having the luxury of curation that comes with plant privileges.

No Matter How Poorly Their Projects Go They Find Work

Bad movies can and do kill careers unless you've got money and capital to fall back on like industry plants/babies. In the case of Tom Holland, were he not a marvel industry plant, Chaos Walking would have killed or in the very least stalled his career. But it hasn't. Yet a movie flopping like that (both critically and financially and with fans) has killed/stalled the careers of actors like Taylor Kitsch, Hayden Christensen, Halle Berry, Taylor Lautner. Industry plants/babies are unaffected by flops because they have industry backing.

They Usually Aren't THAT Talented BUT they Do Have A Look

Okay this one is gonna sound mean, but the reality is a lot of industry plants are easy to spot because they're not that great at what they're doing, but they look a certain way that's very "in" which gets them roles. A gimmick of Tom Holland's is that he "looks young" and this is commented on constantly. He brings it up a lot and so do his co stars. Again, it's clearly a branding strategy that's very common with industry plants. Timothee Chalamet always plays into his lankiness and odd looks to the point where they made a whole superbowl commercial out of it. Again they aren't necessarily bad actors but it doesn't take much to dig around on Google and figure out that the "talent" these actors have is really just financial or social capital affording them the privilege of not having to work to live in the same way actors from working/lower middle class backgrounds do. Unlike those actors, they don't have to work their way up to big roles and they're managed and protected as brands from early in their careers.

Basically, I garuntee you if an actor's parent(s) or other close family members are wealthy and/or in the industry, they're either an industry baby or plant. This isn't inherently evil, but it does speak to systemic class and race biases in Hollywood that disadvantages actors and creatives without family capital.
