Why Holistic Health is Important?
Understanding the differences and advantages between conventional and alternative health practices is crucial because their combination can help us maintain good health, lead fulfilling lives, and care for our bodies, mind, and soul. The conventional approach, often known as Western medicine, is a standardised system in which healthcare professionals use science-based techniques and procedures (typically including pharmaceutical medication, treatments, and surgeries) to provide patients with top-notch care. The term "wellness" refers to a different approach (holistic health) that considers the whole person (physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being). It greatly depends on how we as humans view and live our lives; it's about our ongoing journey, which can positively or negatively impact our health.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), conventional and alternative wellness strategies are becoming more prevalent in healthcare. They can provide a more comprehensive, integrated, and individualised approach to patient care. This is referred to as whole-person care.
Studies have shown that physical and social pain have many similarities, even though it can take many forms and result in multiple experiences. People more sensitive to physical pain are also more susceptible to social pain. For example, interpersonal interactions like rejection or social exclusion can cause physical suffering.
The holistic approach
Physical Health: Yoga can aid in alignment and flexibility for the body and mind in addition to other physical activities like running or lifting weights. We might feel less tense and more grounded and centred by restoring our bodies and thoughts. Breath practice is crucial because it may quiet the mind and heart and remind us to stay present and connected to our surroundings.
Mental health: Our thoughts, feelings, and actions matter and can affect how we behave, act, and interact with others. The goal of the holistic method is to teach the mind to continually think positively, even when faced with difficulty or distress. In reality, studies in positive psychology have shown that cultivating a positive outlook, being grateful, and showing compassion can boost happiness.

The current model of inpatient psychiatric care, which primarily focuses on safety and crisis stabilization, falls short in promoting sustained recovery. The prevalent emphasis on ultrashort lengths of stay often overlooks the need for comprehensive treatment plans.
A proposed model of care advocates for rapid diagnosis, goal-setting, and treatment modalities before initiating treatment, organized into three distinct phases: assessment, implementation, and resolution. This approach emphasizes individualized treatment and active patient involvement in treatment planning, addressing critical psychosocial aspects that are frequently neglected.
As we strive to reform the mental health care system, it's imperative to prioritize effective, recovery-oriented treatment strategies. This includes ensuring patient comfort and preferences are accommodated within reason. Considering patient preferences, like comfort items (such as safe stuffed animals; Share-Bears, if you will) and rescue medications (like melatonin,) is essential to upholding rigorous standards of care and safety.
Let's advocate for reforms that enhance patient-centered practices while adhering to established treatment guidelines and advancing recovery-oriented care.

Energy Centers in Human Design

Q: What is an energy center?
A: They are the shapes scattered around your human design bodygraph. An energy center is an area where complex metabolic and endocrine processes occur/originate. Also in these areas, related energetic and abstract thought processes are generated (eg. feelings of separation and abandonment/togetherness and unity). Inspired by the system of chakras, nine of them exist in human design. To identify each center for yourself, see the graphic at the end of the post.

Q: What does it mean if I have a defined/closed energy center?
A: That means that your energy is consistent within that center. Furthermore, you have a characteristic way of expressing the energy in that area, and it isn't very susceptible to influence from the outside. (They are indicated by a colored-in center).

Q: What about undefined/open energy centers? What do they mean?
A: They constitute the not-self. Learn more about the not-self and undefined centers in my previous post. (They are indicated by a white/uncolored center).

There are Nine Centers and Five Categories of Centers:
Pressure Centers = these centers are about the energies that exert pressure in the body and compel actions to take place (this can be known as anxiety or desire)
head/mind/crown center: it is concerned with inspiration and strategizing
root center: it is concerned with stress, pressure, and accomplishment
Motor Centers = these centers are about the energies of doing and getting done
ego/heart center: it is concerned with willpower, discipline, and self-love
solar plexus/emotional center: it is concerned with emotions, EQ (emotional intelligence), and relating
sacral center: it is concerned with life force energy, desire, and consent
root center (see under: pressure centers)
Manifesting Center = this center is about the energy that you can transmit (all the energies of your centers try to end up here to exit the body); this is how you impact and interact with the world outside of you
throat center: it is concerned with expression, communication, and manifestation
Awareness Centers = these centers are about the energies of bodily intelligences 
ajna center: it is concerned with your perspectives, beliefs, and research
splenic center: it is concerned with instinct, survival, and fears
solar plexus/emotional center (see under: motor centers)
Magnetic Monopole Center = this center is about the energy that structures one's existence or life trajectory/direction
g/identity center: it is concerned with love, purpose, and self-knowledge

Q: How can I go further into discovering my centers?
A: The centers have different gates within them, making 64 of them in total. Gates are a deeper way of understanding yourself and your "doors of potential." I'll go into them another time. But, however you engage with the material at this level, it will be part of a deep self-discovery process. Connecting the understanding of the gates with the planets, unconscious, and conscious self is one way that you can go about the process. The Gene Keys are another method.

The Accessible Icon Project: Redefining Accessibility through Service Design

In their quest for accessible and inclusive cities, graphic designer Sara Hendren and collaborator Brian Glenney created The Accessible Icon Project. Their mission: to reimagine the blue-and-white icons for wheelchair-accessible parking spots.
Hendren had been collecting icons with a more holistic design approach on her website, Abler, since 2010. These icons depicted movement, capturing the fluidity of the human body. This led to questions about why inclusive representations weren't more common.
Their venture started as an experiment, adding updated figures to existing signs. This grassroots street art campaign aimed to challenge societal views on disability, access, and citizenship. Since 2011, the project has gained global recognition and evolved into The Accessible Icon Project, collaborating with graphic designer Tim Ferguson Sauder to refine the icon and meet industry standards.
This project exemplifies service design principles because it has sparked global conversations about disability rights, accessibility, and inclusion. The not-self is made of your open/undefined energy centers. It is where you are receptive to your environment. It has a yin/feminine energy (meanwhile, the closed/defined energy centers constitute a yang/masculine/active energy).

Q: What is an energy center?
A: An energy center is a "hub" where energetic correspondences of certain biological functions & their related abstract concerns are generated. They are the shapes that are scattered around your chart. There are 9 of them, and they were inspired by the system of chakras. See below to identify which energy center is which:

Q: How do I determine which of my energy centers are open?
A: Open energy centers are white. They aren't colored in like the closed/defined energy centers are. (For example, the depicted chart shows no open energy centers).

Q: Why is it important to understand what is not "me"?
A: It helps to bring awareness of where your energy is malleable and inconsistent. It can show where you're open to learn and can use more mindfulness. In the same vein, it also shows where it's unwise to make decisions from because your true self can't be found within those areas (for information on making decisions: see the post on Authorities in HD). There is where we tend to have a curiosity, but it will not necessarily highlight your inner gifts and strengths.
Q: What part does the not-self have in the deconditioning process?
A: Many times, influenced by those around us, we feel that we are to exert energy in the wrong areas. This brings us away from being aligned, fulfilled, and aware of our talents. Since our areas of the not-self are highly susceptible to environmental influence, our deconditioning tends to be most concentrated in these areas/topics. We tend to know of them as "limiting beliefs" or "settling for the bare minimum in life."

Q: Instead of allowing limiting beliefs and not-self themes dictate my self-concept and life path, what should I do?
A: You are better to use your authority (your inner guidance) for decision-making, shaped by your strategy. Bottom line: always follow what feels like you're being authentic, not doing something you think you should do.

Time spent in false ways of being leads to rejection and misunderstanding of who you are and the gifts you hold, so life feels forced and strategized. // Time spent in efforts to embody self-loving perspectives allows you to see your qualities in a new light, so life feels manageable and flows more.
head center: I try to know everything about everything, as if it were actually possible. // I find adventure in life's unknowns and I notice my wisdom emerge in real-time experiences.
ajna center: I try to mask my uncertainties, as I see it as embarrassing to be uncertain. // I am honest about what I know and what I don't. Obstacles are not an "issue." They are part of the path.
throat center: I try to push myself to speak and make things happen, as I want to be sure that I'm heard and make significant influence. // I let myself speak/act when I feel ready since I see that intentional words/actions are powerful, even if they aren't frequent.
g/identity center: I try to center my identity around an image that I believe will bring me love, admiration, and success. // I don't give structure to who I am or where I'm going in life because it's more freeing and authentic.
ego/heart center: I try to look for proof that I am valued and gifted. // I realize that external markers of my worth are nothing compared to the continued reminders of my worth I receive when I commit myself to self-love.
solar plexus/emotional center: I try to avoid intense conflict and emotional situations, as I don't feel empowered or strong enough to communicate myself in those moments. // I notice that conflicts are growth opportunities for my emotional intelligence. I use techniques for energetically protecting and cleansing my emotional self with regularity too.
spleen center: I try to all I can to avoid fearful and unplanned situations, as they throw me into fight-or-flight. // I have become comfortable with spontaneity, when necessary, because I have cultivated understanding in the intelligence and intuition of my body.
sacral center: I try to use high amounts of my energy on a regular basis, as if I can expect to have the same amounts of energy each day. // I create healthy boundaries for my energy so that I don't tire myself out.
root center: I try to counteract the stress in my life in unsustainable ways (often that create more intense forms of stress). // I am conscious that when I feel like seeking out more intensity is often when I actually need rest. I have a set of nourishing and restful practices that I turn to on a regular basis.
