the answer to the question of why I am this way is very often anxiety

#I know it’s not my personality etc. etc. but truly never been able to so clearly see how much anxiety I have #until this year! #my very matter of fact counselor: your base line level of anxiety is very high #me: surprised pikachu face #anyway it’s kind of helpful to just see how it has exacerbated so many things over the years that I used to just think …. More Harry Potter Disk Horse™

At the risk of stepping into a minefield I've had what is probably an obvious thought about Harry Potter, the whole 'Wizarding World' franchise actually.

It was so fucking cynical from the beginning.

Rowling, even with all the criticism for her vicious bigotry, is often touted as a billionaire who made her money the good way. The least exploitative way. She didn't personally run a sweatshop or imperialize resources, she just wrote a book that was popular. Yeah, the gears of capitalism are connected to that industry, but she is no more responsible for those then less successful authors.

But that isn't how she became a billionaire. A millionaire sure, but not a billionaire. She became a billionaire by encouraging her fans to form unprecedented levels of identification with the works. To begin to define themselves through the text of Harry Potter. Find your house, something I remember seeing online as far back as the first movie, and then buy the merchandise. Scarves, pennants, cloaks, sweaters, mugs, everything Harry Potter related could be bought not just for your favorite characters but for you, to express yourself through her works. And it worked.

It worked so well that she, meta-textually, redefined Slytherin into a just 'cunning, and ambitious' group instead of the textual 'blood purity' hate group it was in the books. Cause maybe kids sorted into Slytherin might not buy a mug otherwise. People would argue viciously about what it meant to be in each house when at the end of the day it was just a completely artificial marketing demographic. One that Rowling and her publishers had total control over.

She was never good. This series never represented anything more than the promise of more neoliberal capitalism.
