Helldivers II Post

alright I've been playing helldivers on and off for about a month now and I think I've got an idea of what I like about it and what I do not like about it.

First off, like everyone ever says, the gunplay is ridiculously good and it really makes me realize what I've been missing, recoil is chaotic, aiming sight wiggle is noticeable and important to get right in the heat of it, in general like a surprisingly small amount of games firing a gun while running actually feels like a risk and it really adds to the chaos. Clip reloading is another system that punishes you for panic reloading (something I had to learn) and the game has a difficulty scale ranging from almost pointlessly easy to effectively being a stealth game because if you get caught you'll get so piled up on you are inevitably going to chain die repeatedly. In solo, anyway. The chaos is unparalelled and it just really feels like things go to hell really quick, it's super exciting, and when you pull off a clutch strategem it feels Great. Basically everything about playing the game is fantastic.

The galactic war thing giving overarching goals for the playerbase is also really fun and I fuckin Love communally filling a meter so there's no complaints there. Also fantastic.

I have one complaint. One specific (and ultimately not really that important) aspect of the progression is much harder then the others, to the point of pushing less skilled/solo players Really hard. The game is intended as multiplayer. I have no qualms with the intended multiplayer focus. Maybe I am being unfair by making the comparison that I am about to make, but I wish it had handled the entire thing a bit more like deep rock galactic.

In deep rock galactic when you solo you get a little drone buddy named Bosco and he will shoot bugs for you, he'll mine for you, he'll generally help you out and is surprisingly competent which makes single player playable, and a little less arduous. The experience is still far more complete with multiple players, because it was, you know, made for that, and especially in DRG the community is generally friendly enough that there's no reason not to do that, but as someone that is not always feeling up to herding cats on the internet it's nice that I can pop into solo and play the game and get more or less the same stuff a group can get, and progress my account. This on top of the fact that a failed mission still rewards you a (reduced) amount of rewards means that you're always moving forward, which is quite nice.

I've been beating around the bush long enough so here's the complaint finally. There are three different avenues to upgrading your account.

Medals, which you just get from clearing missions, no complaints there. These unlock new gear and cosmetics for the essentially battle pass. Battle passes never vanish so the battle pass model is essentially just there so they can do content drops.

Requisition slips are number two, and much like medals you just get them by finishing missions. Again no complaints; they unlock strategems (active abilities you can use in missions), and are quite important to playing the game at higher difficulties, because heavy enemies are surprisingly weak to your non strategem equipment.

Samples. Here's the issue. First, when you die, you drop your samples. If you finish the mission, and die during extraction, you might "succeed" the mission, but you are not getting those valuable valuable samples. This really isn't the biggest deal, but it plays into part two. Part two is that higher grade samples spawn exclusively on higher difficulties; 4 and 7 to be precise. This is the issue. You can really break your back trying to get a decent amount of rare samples only to get thumped because the game dropped 3-4 heavies on you during extraction.

Now it's not the worst thing in the world, the passive tree is ultimately probably the least impactful upgrade segment out of the three, and you can get them solo with enough effort, but it feels very gatekeep-ey and almost (don't take this next part too seriously now) mean spirited.

It's just baffling because much like DRG I think helldivers is a Fantastic multiplayer game, and as a result I don't think they have to gate materials like this other then a weird insistence that only players above a certain skill level can get the full passive tree. There are multiplayer players saying they can't really get the higher tier samples because they're not good enough, and it feels like the sort've thing that creates needless friction. Hopefully they'll eventually introduce a way to get higher samples at a reduced rate, so, much like DRG, even if you're hobbling through the lower difficulties you can eventually nickle and dime your way to upgrades.

I dunno! I'm really enjoying the game, but when I drop samples right at the end and I get a small portion of progression yanked out of my hands it feels real bad. That's essentially my one complaint. If you've got people to play with then it's a great game to grab.

Pizza Tower features a wide variety of foes for Peppino to plow his way through, though if I had to chose my ultimate favorite enemy in the entire game, I'd have to go with the Bad Rat. I love literally everything about their animations and I always get super excited whenever I come across one!

It was when I first attempted to draw a Bad Rat that I realized the potential of taking one and making it into my very own Pizza Tower OC... enter Brat the Rat, the punkish and portly rival to Gustavo's right-hand rodent, Brick the Rat!

We all know that Peppino Spaghetti has his fair share of rivals, and while it's unanimously agreed upon that his ultimate foe is the villainous Pizzaface, I've always thought that the Noise made for a better fit as the Italian's evil double. I mean, they do hate each other with a passion.

But how cool would it be if Brick the Rat had his own rival (Gustavo doesn't need a rival, he's too precious to have one)? There's a distinct difference between Brick and the Bad Rats (I.E. tail color, ear length, messier whiskers, etc.), and I thought it would serve as a neat basis for a Pizza Tower OC!

Brat the Rat is the commander of the Bat Rat brigade in the Pizza Tower, and sent Brick out to dispose of the intruders of their domain. However, after Gustavo and Brick's eventual friendship, Brat takes it upon himself to disregard the incompetence of his inferiors and go after the true threat to the tower, Peppino, personally.

He is best described as a conniving though lazy figure of authority, and spends most of his time snooping about The Pig City or at home in the fittingly named sewer level. In spite of his mean demeanor and meaner intentions, Brat also has a seldom-seen (At least to anyone besides the Bad Rats) gentler side, and can be a complete and total cuddle bug if he trusts you enough.

I find that Pizza Tower sprites are easiest to draw if you sketch them out beforehand, and that's just what I did with Brat! I wanted Brat to be larger than the standard Bad Rat by a longshot, and that he'd tower over Peppino when sitting upright, so I made conceptual sketches of the such before going into spriting.

Honestly, it took me a little while to figure out Brat's body shape when he isn't laying on his front, but I've since perfected it and can safely say he is easily one of the easiest and most fun of my OCS to draw! Seeing how big of a hit he was to some of my mutuals outside of tumblr, I figured I'd show him off to y'all on tumblr as well! 🍕✨

This scene from the novel doesn't get nearly enough recognition when it comes to appreciating Wei Wuxian's dedication to premium, individualized, no-shortcuts torture.

As much as I love Jiang Cheng, I think it's clear that on this topic Wei Wuxian is superior in his detail-oriented and thoughtfully considered approach. It's like comparing a Michelin starred chef to a TV dinner. True craftsmanship is always something that deserves appreciation.

saw a video about 2 player ttrpgs and one of them was like "this one's about a pretend marriage" and i was like oh? and i looked it up on itch (eyes on the prize, fyi) and it's 50% as of right now and i was like OH? and i bought it immediately & ive read most of it and i am a big fan. and i KNOW that i have friends who would have fun playing it (it's a 2 player or 4 player game; the 4 player variant has 2 fake couples) but asking them is going to be so cringe. yeah we're gonna make up people and pretend to be them and then pretend to pretend to get married and the characters when they start their pretending they're gonna be like "oh we don't have any romantic feelings towards each other this is strictly plot" but then (get this) they will start to develop real feelings for each other. and we're gonna act it out together and pretend to be them but don't worry! we have no romantic feelings towards one another. this is strictly plot. when WE (irl) pretend to be in love it's actually platonic, unlike the people who we are pretending to be to each other. so do you have like 2-5 hours you wanna dedicate to that next week

and the worst part is that's 100% what i want. like i have roleplayed romance before with friends it is literally not a big deal because the whole point of roleplay is that the character ISN'T you. but with a fake relationship the crushing weight of dramatic irony hovers behind me

yeah, underfell used to be my favorite! i think it was smth about being really edgy as a kid, or maybe it was because red was my favorite color. idk man, even now i gotta admit those designs slap really hard.

i'm not really sure if i have a favorite au now though. i do have some ideas for underfell that i like, but i think i see the appeal of most aus bc i just like making new scenarios.

i like the big three a lot (classic, fell, swap). sans is my favorite in classic (predictable i know) if you're not counting gaster, since he isn't technically a canon character. i like both fell paps and fell sans equally, and swap paps is cool. i'd be buddies with that guy.

Why I think the beginning of this scene is extremely important to Sebastian’s redemption arc.

Tell me, when you look the above images, what is it that you see?

Most people will recognise the photo for what it is when presented to us amongst the cluster of the rest of the episode, the opening cut to Sebastian’s very ‘rushed’ character development segment, which starts out with him writing school notes/doing homework, drinking a coffee, and waiting for Brittany, Santana, Kurt and Blaine to show up for their scheduled chat. On a surface level, that’s exactly what this scene is, nothing less, but maybe something more.

I’m going to elaborate on why I think this section sets the correct tone for the upcoming scene, and how I feel it makes Sebastian seem a lot more genuine than he is shown to be in prior episodes.

1) Teenager or Adult:

One thing I think Glee truly struggled with, even throughout its earlier seasons, was the mismatched attempts at making the age of their characters believable. Between seasons 1-3, their youngest teenaged individuals were 14/15 (Artie and Tina in S1), and their eldest were 18 (the graduates of S3), your typical high schooler age range. However, throughout the filming of S1, many of the actors portraying our favourite glee kids were actually in their late 20s (for example Cory Monteith was 27 as he played 16 year old Finn Hudson). This concept wasn’t new to TV at the time, many shows even to this day use young adults to play their spritely teenagers, and while it may fix a lot of issues behind the camera (legal working hours, maturity levels, contract signings and professionalism), this can cause a few show-based misdemeanours for the audience.

While watching from afar as fans discuss characters wrongdoings, I’ve come to notice that a lot of people overestimate the actions of each character based upon their ‘ages’. It’s easy to forget that Quinn and Puck were only sixteen years old in season one, when they’re portrayed by 23 year old Dianna, and 26 year old Mark. Psychologically, it is much easier to be angrier at somebody you perceive to be in their twenties as the age is often used as a scapegoat (“they’re 21 years old, they should know better), especially in comparison to that of a sophomore. I mostly see this sort of misinterpretation in characters with more faults than strengths, so for example Santana, Puck, Rachel, and yes, Sebastian. If we take into consideration that throughout season three Sebastian would’ve been 16, if only just 17 at the latest, this should add a layer of understanding to his maturity levels, especially when considering his upbringing? But again, as a flawed character being played by the 21/22 year old Grant Gustin, I think that subconsciously this gives people a reason, or even an excuse, to discard this segment of his redemption, as I often see it does with other characters.

“He’s sneaky, he’s manipulating them, he’s irredeemable”, what he is, is a spoiled teenager with a brain that literally isn’t, and won’t be for years to come, fully developed. Whenever I flip this argument on somebody and say “are you irredeemable for the stupid decisions you made as an emotionally confused sixteen year old?” And to that, it’s always: “it’s different for Sebastian, he’s evil and should know better.”

No it’s not different. Sebastian should be held accountable for his behaviour, I’d never dispute that, but do that, and only that. Don’t force a false vindictive narrative onto a character because you dislike them, and especially don’t set up a double standard when it comes to actual facts. He’s a teenager, a minor, a spoiled little brat who did need his ass handed to him for lack of a better phrase, but a child no less. Treat his wrongdoings as such, hold the accountability, but don’t force evil intentions when they aren’t there because you think it’ll be held, allow him room and a chance to grow up. Everyone, especially teenagers, is entitled to that.

2) How this timestamp rectifies this:

I find that this timestamp helps put into perspective Sebastian’s age, and as a result, his maturity levels and mentality (or lack there of…). I know that in the US uniforms aren’t a common practice unless it’s for a prep or private school, but I genuinely think the use of the Dalton blazer adds to the legitimacy of the canon ages of the character. I tend to associate a uniform with a high school, especially the stereotypical blazer, tie, shirt and nice shoes, this works for the unholy trinity and the footballers in their letterman jackets and cheerleading outfits too. It really sets the tone that these are high schoolers, aged 14-18 year old kids who are going to make really stupid decisions sometimes, keeping in mind the emotional turmoil that comes from puberty and hormonal changes around these ages too.

Now this next point is the one that scratches my brain itch. Sebastian 👏 is 👏 doing 👏 homework 👏. We hardly ever see any of the kids in glee doing homework, or anything school related unless it sets up for a song (in a classroom). I know people don’t tend to look at it this way but even just the principle of Sebastian doing his school work sets such a realistic tone for who actually is. A teenager. He’ll sign his name at the top of that piece of work like any other student, he’ll hand it in to get feedback like the rest of his class, he’ll anxiously await to receive his weekly grade, much like any other teenager would, when it arrives he’ll either be pleased or disheartened, and he’ll discuss it with his friends. The simple idea of him doing something completely unrelated to sabotaging the NDs, even if it’s just as simple as a bit of homework or finishing up a phone call, really sets apart that this is a person, not a monster. He has a life outside of hurting your favourites. I adore how much this puts into perspective that underneath the layers people associate with him, rightly or wrongly, he’s still a 16/17 year old boy, both recognising his age and his maturity level along with it.

That’s all I really had to say, definitely not as in depth as my very first analysis post, but this is one of my favourite details about our lovely meerkat no less. This can really be applied to a lot of your high school faves from glee, mainly Quinn, Puck, even Artie to an extent off of the top of my head. It gets a little trickier to defended when the behaviour continues as they grow up and still act this way in a professional work place and/or college (not naming any names, but I’m thinking them-), but beforehand, I’m not going to have anybody try and wipe away Sebastian’s redemption for the price of nothing, and these are just the aspects I think help set the tone for who he truly is, not who he’s painted himself to be in the eyes of an audience.
