TOWL Ep 1
Absolutely Speechless. 😭 I know I’ll find all the words for how much I adored this premiere eventually but for right now…just utter awe. Everything was INCREDIBLE. Andy and Danai's performance in ep 1 was excellent and quite truly what dreams are made of. Also I literally, not figuratively, literally stopped breathing several times from the heart-swelling emotion throughout.
I’m gonna eat 5 more of these dinners episodes, okay? 😊🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕💍

Gonna say something potentially controversial:
I think Heartcatch suffers from the Up phenomenon in that people remember it as an excellent, if not flawless masterpiece when it actually has One (1) excellent, if not flawless moment in the beginning and is otherwise nothing special.
#pretty cure#babs' musings#precure: heartcatch#i remember sitting there watching 4 episodes at a time and asking myself “so when does it get as Great as people say”#i admire how different it is in tone and style to other seasons. it really stands out in that regard!#but that doesn't make it automatically better (or worse) than other seasons#it was funnier.#but the story? really underwhelming imo#the only notable part about the plot was the very first scene that set the intrigue and mystery of Yuri's character#but what they deliver on that front was extremely disappointing for me#and all the other characters get pretty mid arcs as well#Tsubomi has anxiety about not being good at anything. nothing comes of that besides one or two insults from the villains.#Itsuki has to crossdress in order to continue the family business because her brother has vague illness#that's never confronted in any satisfying way. it just sorta fades away once she decides she likes being a girl#Erika's insecurity regarding her sister is honestly the most engaging of these arcs and that's because I have a little sister#I suppose I set my expectations too high for that season. but people call it The Best Precure Season when it's not even in my top 3 so far#and that's kinda concerning for me going forward#suite is also proving to be a huge bore for me. extremely artificial season going through the motions of the franchise#Hummy... save me. Hummy. Save me Hummy#I really don't want to struggle through 13 more unremarkable seasons in the hopes of recapturing the magic of Futari Wa and Fresh#argh. i hate not liking things#sorry for the rant in the tags.

Watching Last Salute to the Commodore right now and, well, I have already been warned about this episode. It's all true. It feels like a weird fever dream. It just makes more sense if you assume everyone is on drugs the entire time.

So I'm doing the new "Timeline Reflection" quest in D2, and while I do appreciate this feature being added for New Lights... it kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth, in its current form at least.
So, being able to replay an altered version of the Prison of Elders mission from the Forsaken opening is good! I think it's very useful to new players to at least get context for Cayde's death considering how significant it is. Would I prefer Forsaken to still be in the game? Obviously. But this is at least giving New Lights some much needed context so it's still good.
But here's where my problem starts. Timeline Reflection only has missions for Forsaken, Beyond Light, and Witch Queen. The three other vaulted campaigns don't get anything. That frustrates me quite a bit. I think there's more value in using Timeline Reflection to contexualise content that's not in the game rather than content that still is.
Beyond that, my larger issue with this feature for expansions that are still in the game is a simple question: why is it even necessary? And there are two answers to that question.
First, replaying old content is a very limited feature. You can replay Witch Queen and Lightfall... but not Beyond Light or Shadowkeep. If you want to redo the BL story, you need to either make a new character, or watch it on someone's youtube channel.
Second, and I think this is more significant, each expansion is a completely separate purchase. Buying the latest expansion does not give you access to prior expansions, and there's no requirement to play preceding content before doing the latest set.
Now, I have a lot of problems with the fact that D2's expacs are isolated from one another. It makes the game more expensive for people who want the whole story, or even just all the gameplay content. I think it's having a negative impact on the game's writing. And it also makes the story much less accessible to new players.
A New Light can show up next year, buy The Final Shape, and be thrown into a story built on years of narrative that the game, on a structural level, indicates they don't need to care about. After all, if these other stories were so important to TFS... why does the game not tell you to play them first?
And so, Timeline Reflection is necessary because without it New Players, or even just players who've been away for a while, will be lost.
But the actual problem with D2's structure still exists.

tbh i feel like we're all maybe forgetting that 6A was kind of destined to be a little bit boring or slow-paced from the get-go because of how 5B ended so *perfectly* with everything tied up in a neat little bow. i mean 5x18 was literally called "starting over," and this is a show that (for better or for worse, this specific post is not pro-911s-pacing or anti-911s-pacing but a secret third thing, confused-and-trying-to-make-sense-of 911s-pacing) routinely and consistently takes right around ~10 episodes to cash in on big narrative plot points. not situational or episode specific or more technical plot points, like madney going from unsuccessful house hunting to finding a place within 2 episodes, or buck agreeing to be a sperm donor inside of 1 episode- those are typically resolved pretty quickly, within an episode or two. the show scaffolds these more-quickly-resolved plot points together into larger, more character driven arcs that typically always take around ten episodes for the full emotional fallout and significance to play out. 911 has always been a show where what happens matters a hell of a lot less to the story than how the characters feel about what happens, so because this is such a character driven show, inside of those ten set-up, pawns-on-the-chessboard episodes, it can be pretty difficult at times to figure out what they're angling at, or where they're planning on going (buck! where the hell are you going!), or how any of the plots are going to coalesce into something useful, profound, and cohesive. typically, the B season ends with at least a *couple* of loose threads that carry over into the arc-resolution-conclusion phase in the following A season, giving us an A season that's like 70% setup for new arcs and 30% wrapup of old arcs- but 5B ended on a true blank slate, so almost *everything* in 6A (with the exception of the conclusion to hen's super-drawn-out-but-very-realistically-paced med school arc) has been... scaffolding from the ground up.
and scaffolding looks pretty unimpressive and odd and boring on its own, like a big pile of ugly junk getting in the way of everything, but put it alongside the Sistine chapel ceiling it was built to accomplish, and suddenly it seems a little more worthwhile.
