Mina today like 😒🙄 anyway as I was saying, I could feel my husband who is Jonathan...

Oh man, imagine how offended she will feel when she eventually reads Van Helsing's memorandum and sees what he thought she was talking about. I don't think she noticed before, especially given how hilariously matter-of-fact she is about sensing Jonathan in this entry. But I can easily see her scoffing and kind of just tossing the memorandum down on the table in disgust at that part. Maybe leaving the room to go give Jonathan a kiss (in front of Van Helsing for extra measure) just because.

About her being so matter-of-fact today... It's funny actually, because when she's had premonitions about his condition despite physical separation in the past (thinking he's not on the water in Whitby, her fear to think of him/certainty he's not in danger soon after they part when hunting Dracula) she sounds a bit uncertain. But on November 5 (since both today and yesterday's entries occurred on that day), perhaps as she feels his presence getting closer, she drops any self-doubt or logical justifying in favor of utmost certainty.

"Let us go to meet my husband who is, I know, coming towards us."

"It was late in the afternoon when the Professor and I took our way towards the east whence I knew Jonathan was coming."

"The two men might be Dr. Seward and Mr. Morris. I knew at all events that neither of them was Jonathan. At the same time I knew that Jonathan was not far off; looking around I saw on the north side of the coming party two other men, riding at break-neck speed. One of them I knew was Jonathan, and the other I took, of course, to be Lord Godalming."

Look at all that knowing! She's not admitting any possibility of doubt at all. It's her husband (who, yes Professor, is of course Jonathan) who she senses and she knows exactly where he's coming from and which one is him. Sure, I guess you could say that she knows he's coming because they're all coming according to the plan, and she could recognize her husband even at such a distance because she knows him so well. But that doesn't really explain her certainty that Jonathan is close even before she sees him, or her consistent focus on only mentioning Jonathan when everyone else is coming towards them too.

And while it's a little less certain, there's even a moment in the middle of the battle where she seems to know he is safe (unlike Quincey sadly):

I should have felt terrible fear at seeing Jonathan in such danger, but that the ardour of battle must have been upon me as well as the rest of them; I felt no fear, but only a wild, surging desire to do something.

She says this just before Jonathan's approach sends the men cowering before him. In my mind it fits well with her certainty that he's in no danger when traveling on the ship, even though as far as they know he might have caught up to Dracula on the river and been in trouble. (In fact, after she says that he has a restful sleep.) It doesn't feel like too far a leap to say that Mina is so tuned in to Jonathan here that she can tell nothing will be happening to him.

If we harken back to early Whitby entries, where Mina woke when Lucy was in danger and felt deep worry about Jonathan, I think it's a lot easier to read as just her being a light sleeper and knowing her friend/husband well enough to tell if someone's off about their behavior or letters. But there's also a possible reading that she has always been a little bit psychic. Maybe she's only really tapped into that power since her attacks, when she was actively trying to use mental powers against Dracula, but at least some of it can be seen as inherently her own, which she's learned to use/trust/strengthen over the course of the book.

(Also, about that last quote - here's a fun theory. Maybe Mina does "do something" here. Maybe she psychically aids Jonathan somehow, helps him bring out the full pissed-off-vampire vibes to stare people down till they literally cannot stand in his way. That could be kind of fun, regardless of whether you assume Jonathan already is supernatural enough himself to do so and she's just helping him make use of it, or if you think she's loaning him some vampyness. ...Actually, I feel like the wafer circle around her should stop her doing any such thing via vampiric methods, so then it would have to be Mina using her normal psychic powers to bring out the full force of Jonathan's Supernatural Weirdness stolen from Dracula in order to protect him. Dunno that I believe it really but it's a cool idea I think.)

The Viren Heart Theory

Yesterday in the process of making a post about TDP's stage motif I noticed that as shortly after dream Soren vanishes, Viren's spotlight and surroundings - which were previously white and is white in all other scenes - turn red, which led to another meta on the connections between star, dark, and for lack of a better term, blood magic.

Highly recommend you read the latter meta, as it will be referenced here, but for a short summary:

Dark magic and star magic are both, as far as we can assume in the latter's case, are represented by differing shades of purple (dark purple and magenta/more pink purple, respectively). However, red is also used to represent possible implied combinations of dark and star magic: Aaravos' key with the dark magic sigil glows red in Callum's own dreamscape; Claudia walks into a red sea in her father's nightmares, signalling her continued use of dark magic and as a pawn of Aaravos; old sigils for dark magic concept art wise used to be drops of blood.

The combination is what we're going to talk about today, along with some other theories regarding Aaravos, his missing chest piece, and the Key of Aaravos, as well as how the series treats/handles hearts as like, a thing. (And no, this actually won't be that long for once, I promise.)

First things first: we have five spells, presumably, that involve dark magic, primal magic, and blood as a key ingredient:

Kim'Dael's blood drinking rejuvenation (*the only one we know of thus far that involves zero star magic)

The revenge spell. It involves dark magic ingredients (last breath of the victim), star magic (unicorn horn), and (human) blood.

The little bug pal spell. Viren uses dark magic ingredients (the rock), human blood (again), and it permits the transfer of a star arcanum creature (assumedly the portal itself on Aaravos' end is star magic, compressing space if not also time).

The ressurection spell. Claudia used numerous dark magic ingredients to get her father walking again. To make it permanent, it needed (most interestingly) either star magic (Sir Sparklepuff) OR human blood (of his line).

The Soren cure spell. This is presumptive, but we know the spell required dark magic as it brought forth Viren's corrupted face for the first time (circa the novelizations). We have reason to believe it involved Star magic.

And we have reason to believe (the red, anyone?) that it involved blood. Specifically, blood / a piece or total sum of Viren's literal heart.

Given that it's a dream sequence, it wasn't clear at first what Viren's rebuttal may have been referring to, but we do see him notoriously say he had no choice in saving Soren either ("I had to do something. I had to save him! I had no choice") so the phrasing/justifications line up. Furthermore, what we've learned from the Puzzle House / the novelizations, as well as Amaya's concerns in 1x05, come to new light with the fact that we know Viren coined Kpp'Ar and that he inherited the position of High Mage after his mentor's "mysterious disappearance":

K: Ha! No choice? You made the same choice you've always made. The one that gives you power.

V: You're wrong. I've always done what protects my family. However dangerous. However vile.

Now, we've heard this line before (hi 4x04) but this is the first time it 1) appears in S5 and 2) appears in the dream sequences, even if Viren has expressed similar sentiments that appear to be linked ("The path of fate is already chosen. Every step I took, I took because I had to"). However, thanks to the Book Two novelization, we know that Viren is harkening back to his last conversation with Kpp'Ar that was 1) about wanting to save Soren at any cost, which Claudia seems to have a rough estimate of happening, and 2) that presumably led to Kpp'Ar being coined because well - Kpp'Ar got in his way.

She had snuck into Kpp'Ar's "puzzle house" and was hiding in one of the passages when she overheard the angry yelling. She could still hear her father shouting at Kpp'Ar, "I will do anything to protect my family—however dangerous! However vile!" Little Claudia was scared, but she knew her father loved them more than anything. Claudia opened her eyes again. Then she did what she had to do [and killed the fawn].

So why the heart? Well, Kpp'Ar points to it very purposefully, it would make sense if it indicated an old wound (given the episode title, and that everyone else in Viren's dream sequences reveal or receive injuries/wounds this episode).

Viren becoming a much colder, crueler person after turning on one loved one, losing another, and then also being distant from his children to a degree... The symbolism would track so hard. And there is, of course, precedent in hearts being attacked or taken in particular ("My heart for Xadia").

(Soren stabbing Viren in precisely the place his father partially or totally devastated in order to save him 10+ years prior? Ironic and heartbreaking, give it to me.) And of course, Mr. Startouch himself, with the subject of his (assumed) missing chest piece being the core of my "The key of Aaravos holds his heart" theory that I developed in tandem with Viren's plan to use the Magma Titan's heart accordingly.

These two theories would be complementary, mind you. Aaravos having his heart torn out, or tearing it out himself to save someone he loved only to lose them anyway, providing parallels to Viren. Making them both more and less powerful simultaneously, accordingly. This also ties back into other considerations of the Flowers of Elarion (a motif interwoven into the actual Elarion poem where Aaravos is called the Midnight Star) / Laisar the Insidious tale shared between Moonshadow elves and Katolis, in which an elven thief takes what you value most / see as most precious but leaves behind a beautiful flower, hoping it would be "a fair exchange of beloved for beloved". One Heart for another.

TLDR; if Viren cut out/used his own heart partially as dark magic spell parts the symbolism would be out of this world and it'd be tragic AF + bonus possible Aaravos parallels. Wonderstorm please 🙏

Yesterday, I made a post about how fans of some characters will makes posts, come up with theories, and write fics where they take attributes of other characters and give them to their faves instead of writing about that character's actual personality. I listed a few characters who I see this happen the most with. I did not say they were the only ones or that all fans of those characters do this.

Now one of the characters I mentioned was Sansa Stark, and apparently some people had an issue with that. I did not disparage Sansa in any way or even say I hate aus with her, I was just criticizing some of her fans. Well some people really didn't like that criticism and have been reblogging my post, calling me a whiny brat, a Sansa anti, and just generally trying to say I'm wrong, stupid, and hypocritical. Well some people (namely @brydeswhale) asked for evidence, so here it is (I'm not including Alicent, Jason Todd, or Tim Drake, who I also talked about in that post, but I guess they didn't read that far):

First off: here's someone who is taking Lyanna's parallels with Arya and giving them to Sansa. I understand that you probably agree with the above post though, so I got some others.

Here is a Sansa stan, and a Jonsa, taking a quote where Jon is specifically thinking about Arya and instead claiming it's about Sansa, even though Jon notoriously thinks about her very little.

Moving on from Arya, here's someone taking a prophecy revealed to Daenerys in the House of the Undying and saying that it's actually about Sansa. Even though Daenerys has already literally fulfilled the Mother of Dragons part and is two-thirds of the way through completing the Bride of Fire part. Plus, it's Dany's vision, how is it related to Sansa exactly?

Again, taking Dany's vision and imagery (even Jon's too goddamn) and giving it to Sansa for no reason.

Once again, this quote is specifically about Arya and Jon's struggle with doing his duty and going to save his sister (Arya not Sansa) by bowing to Stannis. It's Arya's marriage to Ramsay that tortures Jon throughout ADWD while he outright dismisses Sansa's to Tyrion (disclaimer: I don't ship Jonrya, if you do that's all well and good, just not for me).

Once again, stealing from Arya. "Valiant Ned's precious little girl" is a line used by the Northern lords who are participating in the Northern conspiracy. A plot to overthrow the Boltons and save ARYA not Sansa, in their minds Sansa is far away and has no bearing on the situation ever since her marriage to Tyrion.

This is a little more indirect I guess, but still, this is completely forgetting about both Dany and Jon's arcs. Daenerys is ruling a fucking city in a treacherous time and Jon is Lord Commander of the Night's Watch when while the Others and wights are advancing. How are they not learning to rule again? And I'm sorry, but Sansa is not learning to rule in the Vale, she is doing tasks a high-ranking lady does, yes, but she isn't ruling and Littlefinger isn't exactly interested in helping her learn.

might be a bit of a controversial take? But imo I feel like antis who are either poc or black seemingly make the color of their skin the only redeeming quality of themselves, or just want EVERYTHING to revolve around that

Someone’s OC or anime character is not black? Let’s edit them into a black character! And mind you I have absolutely nothing against black edits. I even agree, black people are unfairly underrepresented in games/anime and this has only recently become a little bit better

but the edits I saw were mostly poorly done or gave the characters blurry oversized Afros that cover 90% of the face and colors that will clash with everything else going on, like backgrounds. Or they would “fix” someone’s art and then claim desaturated art pieces or pastel color palettes were “whitewashing”

Whitewashing is a serious problem that happens and shouldn’t happen so often in media but I’m begging people to understand that lighting, pastel and saturation as color options exist

That and folks nitpick every piece of poc art but then get mad when artists start only drawing white characters because they're sick of the nitpicking. Personally, I just don't post original human characters anymore because you can do everything right and folks will still pitch a fit.

Also, fixing art is literally art theft and people who 'fix' art without permission from the artists are scum. I will die on this hill.

Draw your own art. And make it look good, God dammit. If I see another copy-pasted afro I may cry. So many creative hairstyles out there. And learn color theory, lads. Please. I beg.

(Not going to touch too much on the 'my skin tone is my only redeeming quality' note just because I just KNOW that's going to drag in some stinkies and I'm too eepy from my drive yesterday to deal with them. I do agree, though. Or the 'support me because I'm a [insert trait here] artist' thing. Like I'm sorry but if your art or product is shit I'm not spending money on it, idc how much of a minority you are. Trying to guilt-trip and frame anybody who doesn't support you as 'bad' because your art or product sucks is stinky.)

sebastian sallow

what subject are you studying for? | magical theory.

“[Y/N], you know I’m complete arse at Magical Theory…please, study with me?”

-though you didn’t sit next to him in professor fig’s class, you could tell just by the desperation in his voice when he asked to study with you that he didn’t pay attention in magical theory. he found you sitting outside your common room late one night and practically begged you to help him study, and how could you say no to that face?

-even with your light wrist taps every time he went off focus, sebastian found it hard to stay on task while studying. the subject just didn’t appeal to him. he got distracted by the smallest things it felt like, such as discovering the contents of the enchanted books flying around the library or subtly shifting the conversation to something that would distract you both. he was good at that.

-after discovering sebastian’s sly tactics to change the subject from studying to literally anything else, you changed your approach. you found a study book that included diagrams and visuals for magical theory, which held his attention a lot more than the blocks of text in the other books. it’s no wonder he does so well in classes with practical applications, he’s a visual learner.

-on the day of the exam, sebastian walked in semi-confident, or at least more confident than he would have been had he not studied at all. professor fig was proud to see sebastian look more confident than he did with ordinary end-of-unit exams, and even more proud to see how well your study session paid off.

-upon seeing his score, sebastian was so grateful that he swore he’d do anything you asked to make up for it– which he quickly realized wasn’t as good a thing as he hoped. he clearly underestimated your mischievous nature.

ominis gaunt

what subject are you studying for? | potions.

“You need help studying? Do you not pay attention in class? Well, I suppose I’m rubbish potions as well…fine. I will study with you.”

-ominis is one of the best listeners you know. despite being one of the main mischief makers in slytherin, he always seems to be on top of his grades and never turns in an assignment late. despite this, there are some classes he just cannot grasp, and potions is one of them. he’s studied all he could, even tried brewing what he heard was going to be on the practice part of the O.W.L, but it seems nothing works. maybe studying with you will be different.

-ominis was actually the one keeping you on task. while studying your textbooks, you would find a funny potion or potion name and show him, which would earn you a small chuckle from him but a scolding immediately after. the only thing that seemed to make him lose focus was the idea of brewing amortentia, which you found the recipe for in one of your books. even so, he made you go back on task immediately after.

-when both of you felt confident you could nail the written portion of the exam, the practice came next. you migrated from the library to the undercroft and got to work. you took turns timing and grading each other for how well your potions turned out, and because of the year you had, you were understandably better at brewing than ominis was, but he was learning quick.

-ominis waited for you outside the potions classroom before walking in to take the exam. you took a moment to make sure yesterday’s cramming session was still fresh in your minds and then finally went to take the test. ominis was at a different brewing table than you, so that plan you came up with to give light taps to remind each other what answer you got quickly went down the drain.

-both of you did really well! however, ominis did better on the written portion while you did better on the practical. ominis treated you to butterbeer at the three broomsticks to celebrate.

garreth weasley

what subject are you studying for? | divination.

“I told you, I like astronomy, not so much divination! I can barely foretell what the next few hours are going to bring, much less the next month! Please, [Y/N], you have to study with me!”

-you weren’t surprised when garreth came to ask you for help studying divination. while he was a much better student than everyone made him out to be, especially in transfiguration and astronomy, his grade in divination wouldn’t reflect that in the slightest. he didn’t understand how it worked, thought the whole class was stupid, only took it because his mom made him, etc…so of course you agreed to help.

-initially, you’d gone to the three broomsticks to study since garreth has a weird aversion to the library, but after seeing who could drink the most butterbeer before their stomach started to hurt, it proved incredibly ineffective. you ended up moving to a quieter place on the edge of hogsmede to practice reading tea leaves, which worked a little—but not much—better.

-after a while, you’d finally worked out a system that worked enough for both of you to at least try and retain information. study for the written section for 30 minutes, practical for 30 minutes, chill for 20. between when you started to now, garreth had learned the basics of reading oracle cards and could decipher 8 out of 10 message in tea leaves!

-the divination final did NOT go as well as he’d planned. while you studied everything you needed to for the written portion, which he finished relatively quickly, the practical was something neither of you studied: palm reading. luckily you were partners for this section so you could at least try to bullshit your way through it, but you were caught.

-the written portion went decently and that’s what matters. to celebrate, garreth took you back into hogsmede for a honeydukes / zonko’s shopping spree. when will he ever use palm reading anyway, right?

poppy sweeting

what subject are you studying for? astronomy.

“Hey, [Y/N]? With O.W.Ls coming up, I’m starting to worry about my Astronomy grade…if you’re up for it, can you accompany me to the Astronomy Tower to study before the exam?”

-poppy is one of those people where you would have never guessed they’re bad at any subject. it feels like you’ve never seen her anywhere outside the beasts class, and yet she currently had a low A in astronomy— you had to giggle. you couldn’t judge her, though, she just wanted her grade to be better and was asking you specifically for help. how could you say no?

-while her asking to study with you was surprising, her preferred study spot was not: the beasts classroom (class hut?). you had to be pretty quiet with the time of night, but it actually proved to be a really good study spot! the easy access to the night sky accompanied by the white noise from the fantastic beasts wasn’t something you would have expected from the outdoor class.

-poppy knew a lot more than you did when it came to what would be on the written portion. despite her asking you for help, she was actually the one helping you study for a while— or at least, until you got to studying for the practical, or studying the constellations. there were a few easy ones to remember, such as Draco and Sirius, but stuff like Camelopardalis and Horolugium were harder to retain. understandably so; the names tripped you up, as well.

-knowing all the work you put in to help poppy study for the exam was enough to make her more confident. all the constellations that weren’t animals were easy to remember, anyways; for the zodiacs, she could just recall one of her friends born under the constellation, and as for the ones not animal or zodiac related, she’d been up all night with you memorizing flash cards. there was no way she could fail this test, not with the help you gave her.

-after the exam finished, she practically dragged you out to the forbidden forest to take Highwing for a ride around the castle. seeing her so enthusiastic after the exam probably meant good things, and watching her have a good time afterward was almost infectious. seeing her in such a good mood put you in one, too, and you decided you probably did good on the exam as well.

what subject are you studying for? | herbology.

“If you are not too busy, would you mind helping me study for the Herbology O.W.L? The concepts are not as easy for me to grasp, since my Herbology class at Uagadou was not this extensive.”

-natty is a kind soul. she has a gentle nature and everyone close to her knows that. so when she came to you requesting you study for the herbology exam, you were…surprised. natty is in no way a bad student, in fact, she’s probably one of the better ones, but herbology felt so trivial in comparison to some of the classes she took, and you told her this. she responded with a shrug and just said she didn’t grasp it as easily as, say, arithmancy.

-spending time in the greenhouses with natty actually proved to be a lot of fun! you went off task a surprising amount, just goofing around with the chinese chomping cabbages and seeing who could make their fluxweed grow faster (through your ancient magic connection, you won), and yet somehow you both retained a lot of information. studying with her actually made you feel smarter, in a weird way. maybe it’s the way she explains things– she’s very articulate.

-it was the written portion that was messing you up. while natty could answer some of the practice questions pretty easily, you were getting tripped up, since a few of the questions made it sound as though any answer could be correct. it turned more into natty-making-you-study than studying together. but she helped you understand why each answer was what…at least, mostly. did bubotuber paste really work as a beauty modification tool?

-natty was one of the first to finish the exam, just after adelaide oakes and leona everleigh. on her way back to her seat, she very subtly pointed out the answer to a question she noticed you struggling with. when you thanked her for it after the exam finished, all she said was, “It is thanks for helping me study…but I will not let you cheat again.”

-post-exam celebration was in order, and a trip to the three broomsticks was natty’s pick. she explained that they didn’t have butterbeer in Uagadou, or at least not any this amazing, so she often found herself winding up here in her free time. sirona was more than happy to hear about how exams went, and even offered you a couple drinks on the house, as a reward for doing so well.

imelda reyes

what subject are you studying for? | defense against the dark arts.

“[Y/N], there you are. Come study with me. That’s not a request…hm? What subject? Whatever, you’ll find out!”

-imelda actually had to swallow her pride to ask you to help her study for the D.A.D.A. exam. while she’s wicked on a broom, and not half bad at arithmancy or magical theory, she struggles with defense against the dark arts…ironically. if quidditch has taught her anything, it’s how to think fast, but agility and strength don’t correlate to skill in wandwork.

-despite initially asking to study in the quidditch field, she knew she would get you both distracted with the presence of a time trial on the pitch and opted for the slytherin common room instead (the viaduct courtyard if you’re not a slytherin). she claimed she’s already studied everything she needed to know on the written portion of the exam, and only needed help with the practical part…which was essentially her way of getting out of work to gossip with you. she knew a lot more than she let on, that’s for sure– could anyone have seen Everett Clopton having admirers coming? have you heard the rumors going around about Ominis and Sebastian? Leander Prewett got a new broom for his birthday and swears he’s gonna take the Quidditch Cup for Gryffindor next year…fat chance, hah. (her words, not yours!)

-when you finally convinced her to start studying for the practical portion, she genuinely wasn’t as bad as she made herself out to be. while she wasn’t on your level, she could hold her own in a fight and was especially good at dodging attacks to follow them up with one. ironically enough the thing she struggled with was the pace at which you fire spells back to back. there was a point where she almost singed her eyebrows off casting an Incendio and Expelliarmus combo, since her movements were uncertain, sparks from the flame ended up going towards her rather than the training dummy. she wasn’t too happy about that.

-imelda seemed her usual self walking into the exam, overconfident and snide. you watched her intently during the practical portion of the O.W.L., and she did alright, albeit with minor mistakes. she waited for you outside the classroom until everyone was gone to thank you for studying with her and that she, “probably could’ve done it [her]self, but your help is appreciated.”

-prior to the exam, she made you swear you’d go racing with her once exams were over, and she held you to that. you went a lot farther than you thought you would– you expected to just run the timed trial a couple of times and let that be that. instead, you flew the entirety of the castle, past the station, and headed into Irondale before starting back to the school. admittedly, you had a lot more fun with her than you initially thought you would, especially considering her attitude. perhaps you misjudged her.

final score | A, for Acceptable.

I literally have not been able to think straight since yesterday omfg the curse was broken.

I can’t believe Lizzie d!ed first. She broke Jimmy’s curse. Does she get it now? She better not, that’d suck :(

Or maybe they share it now or something. Seacanaryblings lol. Or an extension of the curse? My personal headcanon, that I'm still kind of working on, is that she purposely wanted to end Jimmy’s curse. She joined the Life Series during Empires right? And it was after she found out Jimmy was her brother. She probably learned abt to curse from Joel or something and wanted to end it. Maybe that’s why the watchers took her out of the games. Maybe she was a bit more reckless than usual in order to lose more hearts and get out first, but not draw attention to herself from the Watchers. I also think that maybe she's only paused the curse for a bit. And like I said above, the seablings share the curse now.

It's a bit weird, but for some reason I’m a bit angry that Jimmy didn’t d!e first?? It’s a very good thing that the curse is broken but idrk-

There’s so much angst and theories that can be written now omfg.

Jimmy always being out first means that he’s never had to feel the grief of losing someone in the games forever. Or at least until the next game starts. He’s always died first, marking when everything starts to go wrong. Lizzie took his place. Right after he died, the Warden was brought up and Grian made a Wither. The Warden and the Wither caused a lot of damage, made many people lose hearts and lives, and took Jimmy and Mumbo both out of the games. The fight against the Warden and Wither was the first major bl00dbath of the season. Jimmy always dies before things start to go seriously wrong. Like I said before, he’s never felt the grief of losing someone before. Let alone his own sister. The person who swore to protect him. The person whose death he gloated about. After the euphoria of knowing that his curse is gone, how is he supposed to process that Lizzie is too? He’s never had to experience the brunt of all the d3@th and betrayal that the games has to offer. He’s never had to feel the grief that Scott, Martyn, Tango, Joel, Grian and all the others have had to feel when they lose him. He’s never had to see all the chaos and destruction that breaks out after his death. He’s never had to breath in the toxic gas that his death warns of. Jimmy did end up dying second however. He didn’t have enough time to mourn before his last life was taken from him. But, for the first time, he was able to truly see what the life series has to offer. Maybe the curse is gone, but perhaps not having to see all the tragedy that comes from the games is a blessing.

I do still think that his death marked when things began to go wrong. He didn't die first, but the whole point of the canary is let the miners know when things are starting to go wrong, and he did. He died just as the Warden and Wither were brought up.

The going back and forth on the road is a callback to the times when he tried to escape, with little to no luck

People are not only there in person, but they also are moved by the music and know the words. So for sure it's different audience that they had in Dema

The ukulele makes me think that we travelled even more back in time. Honestly, it feels like a callback to the RAB era

It also gives me parallel to the Car Radio MV, just way calmer this time

Do you have any further opinions on Gendo and Shinji having some potentially not healthy views on women?

I'll see what I can come up with.

Gendo uses multiple women throughout the story, but I'm not sure that indicates an unhealthy attitude toward women in particular. He exploits men, including his own son, just as readily.

I find his affairs with the Akagis hard to explain, because he seemed so laser-focused on his objectives, and so averse to forming any close relationships with anyone. Even if his relationships with the Akagis were purely physical for him, it still seems like the sort of thing he wouldn't indulge in... unless he thought it would bring him closer to what he actually wants.

I guess my personal theory is that he didn't seduce the Akagis, but they threw themselves at him, and he played along because he needed their talents too badly to risk pushing them away. Naoko was practically rooting for Yui to die in that accident, so it seems likely that she fell in love with Gendo while they worked together and made her move after Yui was out of the picture. Gendo might have rejected her, but he needed the Magi supercomputer that she was building.

Only after the Magi were completed did he turn against her, calling her a "useless old hag". I think he was counting on Rei to hear him saying it, and used her to provoke Naoko into doing something drastic. Although, considering how important Rei was to his plans, it seems odd that he'd put Rei in such a risky position.

In any event, Ritsuko watched the tail end of Naoko's relationship with Gendo and immediately decided she wanted next. This seems really foolish, considering Naoko's fate, but I get the impression that Gendo is this charismatic enigma, the sort who attracts people to his cause, in spite of his cold and repulsive personality. Maybe Ritsuko thought she could fix him, or she just found him fascinating and wanted a closer look. And so Gendo found himself in the same position all over again, playing along with a new lover to ensure her cooperation with his plans.

That doesn't make him blameless, of course. He saw these women offering themselves to him, and he used their infatuation to his advantage. I guess what I'm saying is that he didn't get entangled in those relationships because he was lonely or horny, or desperate to feel powerful. He just played along with them for as long as they were useful, and then discarded them when they ceased to be useful.

I'd say that probably explains his apparent closeness to Rei as well. They only get along well because he needs her for his plans, and she's willing to go along with literally anything he wants her to do.

But, again, I don't know that this has anything to do with their gender. If Rei were a boy, I don't think it would change much for him. If the Akagis were men, he'd probably still use their attraction to him to his advantage.

Regarding Shinji... man, I don't know.

Yesterday I watched a couple of old Folding Ideas videos about End of Evangelion. Dan Olson was talking about how the movie served as Hideaki Anno's "revenge" against obsessive fans who hated the original ending in Episodes 25 and 26. I think the "revenge" theory of EoE is still open to debate, but I still need to do more research into that. Anyway, Olson was pretty confident about it, since it explains how different Shinji is portrayed in each ending.

In EoTV, Anno used Shinji as a medium to explore his own psychological problems, and the ending is more positive. But in EoE, Anno uses Shinji to represent the emotionally stunted otaku he was so mad at. So in the movie, Shinji never "does anything" or "learns anything". He wallows in self-pity, demands Asuka's sympathy, and strangles her when he doesn't get it. He's a petulant child throughout the whole film, and the misogyny is on full display.

Olson explains that Shinji is useful for this sort of thing because he started out as the standard anime protagonist: a blank slate that the audience could project their own identities upon. By the end of the TV series, Anno could easily turn Shinji into his alter ego, and use him to express his own anxieties and fears. And when the otaku rejected this, it was like they wanted Shinji back the way he was so he could be their avatar instead, Anno granted their wish, making EoE-Shinji a representation of all of their worst qualities.

And that's an interesting interpretation, but what frustrates me is that it basically leaves no room for Shinji to be a character in his own right. He's just a vessel for whatever Hideaki Anno wants him to represent. If Anno is feeling introspective, he'll make Shinji in his own image. If he's mad at the otaku, he'll turn Shinji into a straw man.

And that makes it hard for me to really talk about Shinji's attitude towards women. Early in NGE, he basically behaved himself and seemed to prefer keeping his distance from girls, if only to avoid any awkwardness. Misato and Asuka kind of brought him out of his shell a bit, and then in EoTV he seems to rely on them to help him figure out his damage. In EoE he seems desperate for a woman-- any woman-- to make him feel happy, forever. If he can't have that, he'll either go limp or throw a fit.

I don't know what the throughline is with Shinji. If I understand commentators like Dan Olson correctly, there is no throughline with Shinji. He's just a placeholder for one psyche or another. Still, I suppose he's defined by the loss of his mother, and there's always this lingering temptation for him to think he can just retreat from his problems and take refuge in a woman's embrace. Early on, he's reluctant to accept Misato's hospitality and compassion, maybe because he can't believe it's genuine. Later, he starts to appreciate her more, and then he begins to take the women in his life for granted a bit. In EoTV, he pulls back from that mentality, but in EoE he sinks deeper into that false hope that a woman can make him safe and whole.

Am I making any sense here? I'm not sure.

Little drama update: Simblrhonesty is trying to cover their ass now.

Since they're deleting posts where they either: made false accusations, said something racist, implied someone had some kind of illness, or just really anything damning really.

Yooniesim did end up seeing what they posted before it was deleted, but I do ask that anyone viewing my posts not tag the original creators. I'm not saying this because I think they couldn't handle all these weak insults but because not everyone wants to see this kind of thing. Unless they're asking to know if they've been featured then let those simmers be.

Don't force anyone into addressing this person. By this point I'm just documenting and archiving things for later reference. I can't imagine anyone genuinely liking this content (because it's soo ass.....like really it's worse than anything they've called out) but I'm not going to spread any theories.

Just very suspicious how they have all these adoring fans you know....anywho.

Sing 1 Commentary and Review Pt. 1

Like I said yesterday, I will be giving commentary through out the run of the movie here! Is this an elaborate plan to distract me from my fic being with my beta reader? Yes! Am I using it for content? Also yes! I will try to remember to include timestamps and screenshots. But probably will just end up doing screenshots most of the time, sorry. Welcome to the madness!

(There will be multiple parts because these take a while and also there's a limit of thirty photos per post so yeah. I got 9 minutes in? I talk a lot during movies ok? It's an AuDHD thing.)

I feel like now is as good of a time as any to mention that I despise minions (aka was forced to watch Despicable Me in art class way too much as a child). So yes, we're not even past the opening credits and I'm already complaining, welcome to watching a movie with me everyone.

Ok just noticed this for the first time, but Old Moon Theatre had lyres (a symbol of Apollo, the Greek god of music) and grape vines (a symbol of Dionysus, the Greek god of theatre) on it, which is just super cool!

I love the fact that Buster canonically talks to himself and narrates his own life. Like same bestie. Love this for you. You're in your delusion era rn but go for it mate.

Like the rest of the gang are in disguises, horrible ones but still disguises, but Johnny wears the exact same clothes throughout the movie and is not hiding his face in the slightest. You're telling me no one, not a single person, recognized him???

Also, just how many vintage trucks are in this town? Like just look up the truck model and go down the list of all the one's owned in Calatonia. Boom, done. The police in this place suck at their jobs.

Ok, so the piglets are definitely around first grade judging by the alphabet and number chart on the wall. Also, a learning chart on the wall is so cute and sweet, I love it!

(Theory) So... we can all agree it's summer right? Because not only are Johnny and Meena home (ok Meena's home, Johnny's being a felon, but that's not important) at lunch time but so are the piglets. They for sure aren't in school yet. And yeah, I know they leave with backpacks later on but that could just be daycare (it's likely daycare). So, since a lot of daycares aren't open on weekends (or at least ones near me), Sing 1 starts in the summer on a weekend! That's cool!

Awwww Rosita. I'm so sorry honey. I love you, we all love you, and I wish I could say you have a normal, relaxing life after this movie but... I'm sorry. Not even close to one.

Ok wow, forgot how vertigo inducing this movie was. Wow.

Oh boy, let's talk about the happy birthday scene. For one, Meena is a kid. Stop being mean to a kid.

For another, the rest of her family just stops singing??? Like excuse me, that's not how the happy birthday song works. I don't care if one of the singers is a grammy winner, you don't stop singing just to listen to them. It is a group effort. Either everyone sings or no one does. It's the birthday song rules people. They really put her on the spot here and I do not appreciate it, the poor baby.

So, Meena has tried out for choirs and bands before but it never worked out. That makes me think her social anxiety is not new and I am very much disappointed with her grandfather's perspective on it.

Ok, ignore the monkey man for a minute. The restaurant is legit named 'The Squids'. So do they own it? Do they work there? Was the founder a squid? What's the situation because I'm guessing the don't eat them since they are sentient.

For such a fancy restaurant, they have terrible taste in lighting decor. I'm pretty sure those are the same ones at my doctor's office.

Oh Eddie, my favourite trust fund baby of the series. It's so good to see you.

Ok, let's talk about the implications of what Eddie is saying here. He says that his dad has been paying for the shows. And Buster's theatre has been struggling for way more than one or two shows.

And I don't know about you guys but I personally wouldn't pay for my adult kid's friend's failing theatre more than once if it turned out to be a bust. It's a waste of money and have you seen today's economy. Now if that was my kid's partner? Different story. I would probably be more willing to pay for a few more for both of their sakes.

What am I saying here? Noodlemoon. They're dating. End of story. ----------------------------

Went to interview at a dog training place yesterday and it was after hours but already so evident that the couple of dogs still there were SO well trained and so JOYFUL to be given tasks, we talked for two hours about dog training theory so she could see where I was and how receptive I was to new information or correction and like. There's a really good chance I'll not only be around to help out but also to grow the business, because she's literally the owner and only worker right now and she's been doing this long enough to know it's sustainable and she's ready to look at a bigger space and also I can't stress enough that she's a short butch in her 40s who lives with her partner and. What was I saying.

Oh right. Going back to daycare today, after zoning in so hard on training and good dog behavior and such was SO HARD because it had never been so obvious before how useless the idea of a daycare is where dogs are shoved in a room and left to mill around bored out of their little skulls in a space with no toys or enrichment. Like. The trouble makers are behaving very normally for being a completely bored animal. Seeing those other dogs locked in and waiting for cues and commands, relaxed on their cots without so much as a "stay" command VS these dogs deliberately provoking reactions from humans and dogs alike, just. I want this training job so badly. I've never been interested in working to line the pockets of some shareholder, but making THE difference in someone's day by showing up and helping and getting to learn because of it is everything to me.

I could write forever on my feelings about all this garbage right now like the co-opting of words people evidently don't know the meaning of (a lot of which were created by or in reference to jews and our experiences like genocide, holocaust, zionist, diaspora, ghetto), the lack of civil discourse, the narrative domination due to demographic disparities, the application of a specificly American branded racial theory to a conflict totally unrelated, the mob mentality, internet posturing, casual anti semitism, having my experience as a jew talked over or those people who talk about jewish culture and history like they know anything about it when they learned jews had distinct sub-ethnicities a month ago and now think they can claim "mizrahi jews are discriminated against" or whatever with no evidence or better yet when they quote the talmud like they have any idea what it actually it, and when I'm told the only reason I could ever justify anything about Israel at all is because I'm "fed propaganda". Like the online discourse is so bad and the real world spillover is disheartening. It's totally cool to critique Israel, like any country they definitely deserve it, I can't say what they're doing right now is okay, the human toll is staggering and they do have a spotty record but so does literally every country. I lived in New Zealand for years, they actually committed genocide against their native population who following years of second class citizenship still live generally in worse conditions then the European descended people (who have no ancestors from that land at all and didn't arrive as refugees) yet no one is calling to decolonize New Zealand. I mean it doesn't make logistical sense sending back millions of people who just happened to be born there, and yet it'd be easier in New Zealand than it would be in Israel, but still no one has made that their cause because this whole thing is just wiling up a big misinformed mob. Sorry this is long and rambling it's just frustrating.

100%, like it's absolutely baffling to see the mass waves of antisemites living in fantasy land and making up whatever they want after literally having heard of the conflict yesterday. and just the appropriation of jewish culture and jewish trauma paired with refusal to listen to jewish voices, like it's almost impressively malicious. thank you for sending this, sending you hugs. it's so hard and frustrating but we'll get through it together 🩵

Hello anon!

So the similarity of the chords has only been pointed out to me yesterday but yes, I’ve had a quick look and they are pretty much the same. In fact the full chords for Dear Reader are G, Am, C and F. Not a rare chord combination by any means, songs in G major are one of the most common in pop music. And I don’t have nearly enough knowledge of music theory to tell you anything about chord combinations and their meanings, my choir MD is a literal genius in music theory, he could tell you a story and a half about every possible note combination but I’m out of my depth here, sorry. Only thought, if she was in fact referencing the beginning of Miss Americana in this song, it would make sense that she was talking about her old diaries in this scene, because the song is called Dear Reader (like dear diary) and it’s arguably her most confessional song ever and I’ll tell you why I think that.

What I can say about the chords (and it kind of ties nicely into what else I have noted about this song) is that, these are all what I would consider ‘beginner chords’. When I was learning the guitar for a year when I was a teenager, those were all chords I learned within the first few weeks. So if you were teaching someone an instrument, maybe a child, this would be a song they’d be able to play along to relatively easily. And that somewhat ties in thematically with the other two noteworthy things in this songs: the sounds in the back of the intro and the child saying ‘mom’.

I have a hyper-sensory condition which means I have very sensitive hearing (among other things) so to me dissonant sounds are extremely uncomfortable and when I first heard this song I was grinding my teeth over the combination of the piano chords and the chimey lullaby over the intro at about 2-6 seconds in. In fact, I’m pretty sure I had that exact same toy as a child (it’s one of those draw-string ones) and it’s brahm’s lullaby that’s playing. The other more noticeable sound is that rhythmic clacking noise, which I haven’t been able to definitively identify. I used to think it might be a printer, but I’ve recently thought it might be some kind of exercise equipment, maybe an old exercise bike. Which made me think of orange girl from the yntcd mv, remember her:

Bit weird that she has such an old school bike right? But then I found this from Miss Karlie Kloss’s launch of her sportswear collection with adidas in November 2020:

Certainly a similar old school look, right? Not sure who’s referencing who here, but the noise makes a bit more sense in that context.

Lastly, there is a slightly distorted child’s voice saying the word ‘mom’ a total of four times in this song, the most obvious and clear being at 3.01 minutes. That in itself is unhinged to me, not gonna lie. That and the existence of Bigger than the whole sky is convincing enough for me to be certain that Taylor has children in her life. And if you think she’d be the sort of mom who’d teach her kids to play an instrument (duh 😉) then this brings it back to why it’s so fitting that this song has such relatively simple chords. Because it’s the kind of song you could play with your child.

Your last post is amazing and I want to share with you that I had a similar journey when it comes to shipping byler.

I first watched the show when season 2 had just come out in 2017, and I was a hardcore milkvan shipper (I was 13 and I didn't know any better and lacked critical thinking skills lmao). While watching season 3 for the first time I noticed Will being gay (I gasped at the rain fight scene), but just like you I assumed milkvan would be endgame. After watching the infamous last milkvan kiss in the last episode, I was left with a weird feeling about it for the next week but I was never able to put my finger on what exactly had felt so wrong in that scene.

Like you, I also have never shipped ships where I didn't notice that there was clear buildup towards endgame (I even watched outer banks for the first time earlier this year and a lot of the fandom swears there has been jiara buildup from the first season, but I know that's not true and the only scene I can identify as true buildup is in the last episode of season 2). However, two years ago I began studying film and how it works, first in highschool and last year in college. I learned a lot about visual storytelling and I also gained an incredible amount of media literacy. Exactly a year ago, a month before vol 1 came out, I was bored and decided to rewatch the whole 3 seasons.

With my older age now and my better understanding of cinematography and narrative, I stopped liking milkvan in the first season because of the born sexy yesterday trope, but I also began to notice how Mike was surrounded by queer coding, both narratively and by the framing of his scenes with Will (the hand hold close up hello). Then I got to the end of season 3, watched that kiss again... and I noticed Mike's eyes were full open and the closet (Wills closet!) door was perfectly dividing Mike and El as if there was a wall between them. That's how, years after, I realized why that scene had felt so wrong to me the first time I watched it. I saw that boy was gay.

However, I was still skeptical precisely because I never fell for queer coding. But I went onto to Tumblr and I decided to read byler theories. I went in with an open mind and I realized that it made perfect sense and it was set up way too perfectly, so it couldn't be a coincidence, either it was queer waiting or true.

I went into vol 1 so excited, I noticed Mike's queer coding on episode 1 alone was SO heavy (I went 🤨 with his bedroom posters and one way sign, the way he looked at Eddie, the people he wanted to ask to be subs in Hellfire...). Then when he dropped the famous "were friends, were friends!" that's when I knew they were going there. And they I saw that he couldn't say I love you to El? That was the moment I smiled widely, and ever since that moment, I've known byler is endgame and I've never had a single doubt ever again. Not even in the aftermath of volume 2. I knew Mike's speech being based on the painting attributed to El when it's actually Wills mimicked the plot of many teenage early 2000s movies (yes I was the girl who wrote you that love letter not her, I'm the one who actually loves you like that... And then boom they always end together). Then, El wasn't speaking to him, and I saw the last shot with the couples standing together. I knew that it was intentional for them to be positioned that way, and at this point I knew it wasn't queerbaiting

It's so cool to hear other bylers experiences with being introduced to all the evidence and just hearing about similar experiences in general!

I feel like a lot of bylers are just sort of lumped in with this naive stereotype of someone who always falls for queer-bait? Like we kind of just get lumped into it when the circumstances for Byler are completely different than the queer-bait ships that came way before.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being a frequent queer-baitee. There literally isn't. Especially bc queer-baiting is referring to instances when a queer non-canon pairing is supported by the fans and the creators sort of humor it while knowing full well it won't happen?

Obviously times are changing at like lightening speed.

For example Stranger Things came out in 2016 and tbh 2016 is a completely different era of representation that 2023. 2016 was like the end of the queer-baiting era almost, give or take a few years. As we got closer to the 2020's, we started to see more queer rep that I feel like wasn't very overtly obviously queer-bait, but often queer characters at the forefront as the main or being more than just another example of the 'bury your gays' trope.

Also I took film classes in high school and I'm now majoring in film studies! So that was also something that no doubt had a massive impact on my perspective of things changing throughout that time from s1 to s4's release as well!

Even despite that I am a little bit slow about catching onto things, and so like it doesn't even matter that I have extra terminology under my belt or something. For example, I have a sister who hates movies, but when I do manage to convince her to watch a movie or show that I think she'll like, she'll notice stuff I didn't notice upon watching for the first time, while I on the other hand didn't notice that detail until like my 3rd rewatch. And it seriously pisses me off so much!!!!! She doesn't even appreciate her gift!

I remember watching s4 with her, and literally having no knowledge of anything outside of half paying attention while watching, she was like, Mike's pocket looks like an arrow... And I just looked at her completely silent and had to look away like seriously fuck you I had to go online and hear hundreds of bylers obsessing over it to think about it that way. But that's also just us as a fandom seeing stuff simultaneously and figuring it out together. Maybe I would've figured out the arrow pocket myself if I had actually not been exposed to the flurry of theories while s4 was promoted and released.

Still, it just goes to show that while yes extra knowledge about film is extremely helpful, like very helpful obviously, someone without any experience can be capable of picking up on things you missed regardless. And I do love that because it's just a reminder that no matter peoples bias' we can work together and figure shit out.

Also why I sometimes still enjoy lurking reddit bc they can be smart, and even a homophobes POV can come in handy bc I feel like they are avoiding the gay subtext at all costs so they're able to focus on things that we might overlook?

I do notice that a lot of people treat bylers like they are pervs and need to stop shipping boys together bc it's just not going to happen and we shouldn't be crying queer-bait, or this or that?

But like, first of all, it's half-canon my friend. One of the characters is, in canon, in love with the other. And there's still one more season left. And the other character has no idea that the other character is in love with them...

That doesn't happen bro. It just doesn't.

And not only that but, we were obviously milkvans at one point... I personally skipped entire episodes for those bitches...

And yet, even despite that, I also noticed something off between them just like 90% of the ga did before even looking up theories or picking up on byler fully.

This isn't a case of a bunch of people shipping two boys for shits and giggles (and even if it was, who fucking cares).

What's happening on Stranger Things is not something that happens, ever. You don't make the main couple become this pairing that the audience is indifferent to in the 3rd and 4th season, practically repeating the same storyline of them being incompatible, only to make their love for each other fail at saving the day... and with unresolved feelings between the main guy and his best friend being unaddressed... It's not a thing.

If more fans realized that this isn't even about shipping and it's just about literally paying attention beyond seeing what you want to see, then they'd understand where we're coming from. I shipped Milkvan but it's clear to me that the story is trying to convey they are not right for each other. I'm not going to hold onto a romantic relationship between two characters who met when they were like 12 and were sort of pressured into being romantic instantly, just bc love at first sight or something? That's stupid. If it was built up more satisfying, and if Will wasn't there being in love with Mike and with Mike clearly holding similar feelings then it wouldn't be what it clearly is. A fucking story that is clearly heading in the direction of a straight-bait/endgame main queer couple.
