I made a little clothing guide for some Dragon Age regions
Some may not be exactly the same as the references that appear in the game or in the concepts, but I wanted to give a little of my vision to the guide.
Ferelden
Ferelden is close to the Frostback Mountains and Orlais and as Leliana and Zevran once said, Ferelden is cold, so I thought it would be a cool idea to put on thick clothes with a lot of fur so the Fereldans can protect themselves from the cold.
Tumblr media
Tevinter
Dragon Age 4 is approaching and it's already evident that we're going to be in the Tevinter Imperium, so I discovered that a lot of Tevinter clothing was inspired by clothing from the Byzantine Empire
Tumblr media
Orlais
We've already seen in the game and in the concept art that Orlais is all about being flamboyant and flashy and what's more flamboyant and flashy than mid-1500s fashion?
Tumblr media
Antiva
Home to the two loves of my life, Zevran and Josephine, Antiva fashion is something I really love… The puffy arms, the breast-enhancing corsets, the leather vests, idk, I just like Antiva
Tumblr media
Nevarra
I don't exactly have much to say about nevarra, but I did some research and found some concepts that I thought were interesting, I also saw in some places that said that the kingdom was inspired by the traditional culture of Spain
So I'll leave two references here
One for the traditional clothes and one for what I imagine might look like Nevarra dress
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Frostback Basin
In Inquisition we can see that the clothes they wear are quite furry and well protected from the cold, so I think it would be a good idea to inspire some of their clothing in Inuit clothing
Tumblr media
The Dalish (1/2/3/4/5)
Well, for the Dalish I had MANY ideas, among them think about adding traditional clothes from some tribes, native Brazilian/American, African, Hawaiian, Inca, Aztec and Mayan
Remembering that I made a great mix of traditional clothes from several tribes and not just one, and that I also have 0 intention of disrespecting any of them, if I have put something wrong or disrespectful you can be free to alert me
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Orzammar
I knew little about Turkey, but when I went to research I ended up enchanted with some of the traditional clothes when I went to research about it and I thought that this style would go well with Orzammar
Tumblr media
Par Vollen
For Par Vollen, I had a bit of trouble finding it, but I think clothing a little bit closer to the ancient Egyptian style would be something interesting. The light fabrics, the golden jewels adorning the body, idk, I like that idea
Tumblr media
Rivain
I was doing some research again and found that part of Rivain's look was inspired by traditional clothing from Islamic Spain and Southeast Asia , so I looked around a bit for something to put here and add one more kingdom to the list
Tumblr media
I hope you people enjoyed! Soon I will add more realms as soon as I finish my research

Why don’t you like jjk? Sorry if you’ve already answered this 😭
I like it but I just think it's ok. The interesting characters to me are either killed off, not utilized as much, or they just make me think of their character inspirations from Bleach. Like I like Gojo alright but every time I see him I just think "Man, I want to reread all my favorite Urahara moments from Bleach". Or I see Aoi and I'm like "Man, I really want to watch compilations of Kenpachi's best moments in Bleach." And while I appreciate Gege trying to incorporate his love for metaphysics into his series and think it's cool in theory, his constant exposition makes me wish he just turned this into a light novel. Here is an accurate rendition of Sloot reading the rules of the Culling Game
Tumblr media
And I don't hate exposition, and there are lots of good series and good authors who use it well! Two of my favorite series are Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji, and they use exposition all the time. But I find Araki and FKMT's way of writing exposition much easier to understand even when discussing complex concepts, and I find the way they incorporate it into their art more tolerable. JJK's exposition is in a series I already don't feel a real pull towards, and it really kneecaps the interest I have in the story/characters. Which is already not much to me personally.
Also I'm a petty bitch and the interest I have in watching something is of inverse proportion to how many people gas it up to me. So when I suddenly saw so many people recommending JJK, praising it for its woman characters being well-written (that...are marginally better than the average male mangaka which is the lowest bar possible. I will give props to Maki though, she's cool), etc. I just put off watching or reading it out of spite lol. The character designs are cool though and some of the characters are hot (even if I find nothing attractive about the blonde misogynist guy in Maki's family and legit do not understand the appeal) but it just isn't my cup of tea. I'll still write for it though since it does have quite a few characters that are good yandere/dark fic fodder

HUGEEEEE fan of your de!swap fic! Just finished reading chapter 5 and WOW what a chapter. I'm soooo glad to see that suzerainty popped up, the original scene with that game is my favorite scene, and I'm overjoyed to see that it carried over to your fic!!
Curious question, what was your motivation behind choosing what skills Kim has? I love all the skills you created for the fic, and I'd like to know your thought process behind it
Thank you so much!!! I’m super glad that you liked the chapter! The Suzerainty scene was hella fun to write:-D And I’m very happy that you like the skills as well!
But, yes, the skills. Oh man, anon, the skills. You have opened up a can of worms here. You’ve given me an opportunity to rant here, anon. So I really hope you’re ready for a long post because I have plenty of thoughts, my friend.
But before we actually get into any of my skill related thought processes and ideas I’d like to preface this post with 2 things!
Many of the skills (and generally the early parts of the fic) are inspired by a hodgepodge of many different people’s headcanons and art here on tumblr! Which, because I’m one of god’s favourite clowns with a terrible short term memory, I have no idea what came from  where! I looked at and read a lot of the things that later inspired me before I ever thought of writing the fic at all. And I never thought about writing any of my sources of inspiration down before I had already finished the draft of chapter 1! Which I kinda feel terrible about! The readers with a better memory than I might remember that I wrote in the first chapter that if anyone saw anything that looked familiar they should tell me so I could give proper credit. (Which I still implore any keen eyed reader to do!) So yeah, this is just to say; I’m not a genius who came up with all of this on my own and I was inspired by many cool people so don’t give me too much credit!
BUT! If anyone ever wants to write or draw anything using the skillset I’ve made for my version of swap!Kim, then you are so very welcome! So don’t sweat it if you want to reuse a name, concept, or the entire set! I’d just be happy to have inspired you:-]
Anyways sorry for the preamble. I just needed to get that said before I go down my rabbit hole:-)
So, let’s get to it! (For real this time I promise, anon) Here are a few of my general thoughts about my Kim skillset and some individual insight into more of the “interesting” skills!
There were a few things I considered when making the skills. For one I needed to figure out what skills were needed because of narrative necessity and what were needed for characterisation. For an example HANDS ON is almost only a “Kim is physically interacting with his surroundings and I need to describe that” skill while TORQUE DORK, on the other hand, is a fluff skill that’s there because of Kim’s interests in machinery. Besides their personalities the skills also need to serve a role in telling a story, y’know? Whether that be description or character. That’s also one of the reasons that Kim only has 16 skills instead of Harry’s 24. A fic is a different medium than a game so it’s not necessary to have quite so many skills. But, if you want my non-boring justification for that, I also just think that Kim is far less scattered brained than Harry! The man is simply more together even when he’s falling apart so he therefore has a few more “multi purpose skills”:-]
Speaking about Harry, I felt like it would be important that Kim’s skills felt unique to him even if some of them started out as reskins of Harry’s (I mean, how do you make a skill responsible for logic without giving it similarities to Harry’s LOGIC skill??). Not that they needed to stand out completely but rather I didn’t want to feel like I was applying Harry’s voices to Kim’s head. Which also means that Kim’s skills just can’t do the same things that Harry’s can! For one they aren’t as psychically inclined even if they can take guesses and read people in similar ways (which they’re partially that good at because of narrative necessity, but hey man, don’t look at me I’m just trying to tell a good story here!)
One thing which I also really wanted to stress with the skills too is that many of them have “rivalries” or “alliances” with one another. Some of them are complete opposites (EYES vs. OUTSIDER) while others will almost always back each other up (POISE & COMMAND). This animosity is there because; one, Kim is constantly trying to keep himself in check and is very harsh on himself so therefore no skill can ever “win” for long. Two; I’m a BIG fan of the thought of “Kim’s centrism is killing him”. So therefore every skill is almost always pulling him in different directions and opposing each other while Kim is trying to thread the needle of just existing. And because there’s this constant infighting Kim’s mind becomes a very hostile place to be. One last general consideration before I get into some individual skills! I really love how having a high level skill in DE also has its downsides! They have blindspots! They have one track thoughts and motivations! And it’s dangerous to only listen to one of them! So I attempted to show that with Kim’s high level skills like VOLTA DO MAR and POISE in the fic:-]
Anyways: individual skill thoughts! I don’t have something to say about all of them but I'll quickly go through my thoughts on some of the more interesting ones in order. (Also I’m so sorry for rambling so long, anon. Here's the part of the post I think you're interested in.)
Starting off with PUZZLEBOX and NOTEKEEPER! If I’m honest I think these two are inseparable; Note provides information and Puz connects the dots. They’re quite obviously Kim’s deductive and note taking powerhouses. Note does however also have a purpose as a narrative device since it’s the one that recalls past information (that Kim can remember). They’re a little like a narrator in that sense. Anyways I don’t have many thoughts about these two but I think they’re kinda cute in how “dumb” they can be despite being intellect skills:-]
FANTASME is not a skill that gets a lot of the limelight but they do have a good amount to say even though they’re a low level skill. They’re kind of a CONCEPTUALISATION and INLAND EMPIRE mix I guess. They’re focused on Kim’s “nerd” things (that isn’t machinery or paperwork) and escapism. They know about art but they don’t really “get it” as Harry can. They’re also the driving force behind Kim’s existential dread as you have seen in chapter 4.
BLEEDING HEART is what I labelled as the “feelings” skill, and they were kind of an EMPATHY clone in the early concepts before I really figured them out. Because all they really want for Kim is for him to feel. Their second priority is making sure that Kim feels for the people around him as well. To Bleed it doesn’t really matter what emotions Kim is feeling as long as they are being felt and that he isn’t hurting or “burdening” anyone. They’re sad, suppressed, and visceral. Another thing about them is that similarly to how ESPRIT DE CORPS is the “gateway skill” that Harry uses to read Kim, BLEEDING HEART is the “gateway skill” Kim uses to read Harry in the fic. This is mostly because I don’t think Harry can be understood through the lens of the RCM like Kim can in the game.
EYES is interesting to me. Because they aren’t the RCM but rather swap!Kim’s understanding of the RCM personified. Which both means they’re brutally honest about how the police sucks but that they also cannot let go of duty and loyalty for the life of them. They are aptly named after Eyes; Kim’s last main connection to the RCM and its office culture. Which is very cool but also not my original idea! And because of the reasons mentioned prior I really don’t remember who came up with that stroke of genius but I would honestly like to thank them personally. (If I ever get my hands on the post I saw it in I’ll link it here)
I love the idea of OUTSIDER. Kim having a skill that’s specifically manifested because of how alienated he feels is so interesting to me! That how much the world has failed him is ingrained in him just speaks volumes, y’know. Outs don’t have too much of a narrative purpose compared to other skills but I do love them regardless. They aren’t completely my original idea either, but unlike EYES, I have no idea where I got this one from. (Again, if I find the source I’ll put in a link, but for now my cursed memory can produce nothing.)
JOIE DE VIVRE is the most fun little guy in Kim’s mind to me. They are what makes life fun (as their name suggests) and they ultimately represent indulgence. They are essentially good to listen to occasionally but not constantly. Because Joie is all about base desires which they want fulfilled now. “Hey! Smoke that cigarette now! Hey! Fuck that guy now! Hey! Avoid your responsibilities now!” And if they don’t get that they will immediately trash talk whoever shut them down. And, to say the least, they are constantly being repressed by the other skills. Kim can’t get rid of them but, oh man, does he wish he could.
VOLTA DO MAR is my swap!Kim’s signature skill. And it shows: they are used to being in control. They are all about keeping Kim going and they generally serve a similar role like VOLITION does in terms of keeping Kim sane. But they are really nothing like VOLITION. They’re mean. They’re efficient. They’re a completionist and simultaneously a survivor. They will shut down anything they deem unnecessary while also dealing with any odd situation which Kim simply needs to roll with. Volt ultimately thinks they know best and is thusly kind of a dick.
NERVE is a kind of “physical skill all in one” with the added on flavour of repressed anger. NERVE’s name then, of course, both comes from the biological nerve and because of the “that struck a nerve” saying. They just want Kim to follow his gut and retaliate for once. They’re the physicality of anger and instinct. Which has pros and cons…
POISE is an interesting little fella to me. They’re kind of like a teen who’s obsessed with being cool and keeping up face and facade in my eyes:-) And since they’re also such a high level skill they get to talk a lot, and with their focus being reputation a large part of that talk is about how embarrassed Kim should be. They’re a personification of self consciousness and intrusive anxiety riddled thoughts and yet they’re also one of Kim’s most useful skills, both in regards to reading others and not being read himself. They’re sort of a necessary evil in that sense.
Oh man. That was a ramble. And I didn’t even talk about every skill. Well, I’m all tuckered out now but thank you so much for the ask, anon! I kinda took it as an excuse to just talk for once so I hope that alright:-]
I don’t know how many people (if any) will find this interesting so, to the people who got this far, I’ll tell you my swap!Kim’s 5 highest level skills as a token of my appreciation for reading:-) Number one is of course VOLTA DO MAR, followed by POISE, BLEEDING HEART, NOTEKEEPER, and then lastly COMMAND. Extra fun fact; EYES and OUTSIDER are always the exact same level and this makes them furious.
Anyways, thank you again for reading my fic and this long ass answer to an otherwise simple ask! I hope you have a great rest of your day:-]

🦂 sonic oc showdown q&a 🦂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
logo by @bunnymajo!! you are awesome @sonic-oc-showdown thank you for giving me reasons to talk about my boy nya
✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name? sting is what scorpions do! they sting. bonus points because it's funny! it sounds like a command. "sting the scorpion"
🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range) 17
🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)? not at all! he's got other things on his mind
🍕 - What is their favorite food? hmm good question! something spicy. my partner says he'd be more popular with the girlies if he ate ice cream but that's not how he rolls. sad for the girlies 😔
💼 - What do they do for a living? two things! sting is a medical student with a focus in neurology! his poison primarily affects the nervous system so he wanted to learn specifically how that worked, and that led to a general interest in the field. as a result, he always carries a vial of antivenom with him, just in case someone has a really bad reaction his more full-time position is as a mercenary! medical lessons were expensive, so he needed a way to pay it all off. he's taken up all sorts of odd jobs as a result. he doesn't really question what he's doing so long as he gets paid well. in my fanstory, he's doing contracted work for an ex-gun researcher named taz nocturne. afterwards, he occasionally helps out team chaotix as an informant
🎹 - Do they have any hobbies? sting would consider his mercenary work as a hobby tbh? it was supposed to be a hobby. he won't admit that it's basically his Job now. he likes to sign up for martial art classes to learn new techniques, not necessarily to participate in tournaments (though he would like to one day). asides from that, he likes to play sudoku :] he is not good at it
🎯 - What do they do best? close-range fighting, that's why being paid to fight someone is one of his favorite jobs. he's also Really good at shooter-type arcade games like galaga, do not try and beat his score
🥊 - What do they love to do? What do they hate to do? to rephrase what i said above: he likes to fight, primarily because he Knows he's good at close-range combat and it makes him feel good to prove that again and again. sting needs someone to knock him down and remind him that he is, in fact, not the Best at what he does he hates doing things unfairly, which is why he refrains from using his tail in combat. that said, he'll use his stinger if he has to, as the job ultimately comes before his pride
❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories? to be quite honest i haven't thought about it!
✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories? i also haven't really thought about this 😭
🧊 - Is their current design the first one? oh not at all. sting went through a few changes. general idea has always been the same but his "hair", mouth, markings, and clothes changed throughout the design process. i actually plan on making a separate post detailing all the the thought i put into his design! i'll add the link here (if i remember)
🍀 - What originally inspired the OC? i saw @/beehunterkisser's sonic bug designs and i was Majorly inspired by them. i Had to make a bug. sting was one of the results. i went with a scorpion because scorpions are Really Cool
🌂 - What genre do they belong in? i've imagined him being in the games/idw comics verse! i do want to make my fanstory into a fancomic one day 👉👈
💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality? he doesn't really use labels to describe his gender or his sexuality, whatever happens happens. he uses he/him pronouns and that's all you really need to know
🙌 - How many sibling does your OC have? he has no idea! he doesn't talk to family
🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like? non-existent
🧠 - What do you like most about the OC? oogh...i gotta say his design. i really popped off tbh. other than that i think he's got fun interactions with the sonic cast and i like his personality! unfortunately the interactions only really exist in my head
✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC? relatively often tbh!! i usually draw him fighting sonic. i was in the process of writing a fight scene but writing fights are hard and i struggle a lot with writing ehehe ^^;; a lot of this stuff isn't posted because i am Shy™
💎 - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC? oh god no
💀 - Does your OC have any phobias? he's got acrophobia! keep 👏 him 👏 on 👏 the 👏 ground 👏
🍩 - Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival? he doesn't have one tbqh! he doesn't really feel strongly against anyone
🎓 - How long have you had the OC? i wanna say late april-early may? that's around when he was first concepted iirc!
🍥 - What age were you when you created the OC? 22! the age i am as of making this

20 Questions Game
Thanks for tagging me, @bronzeagepizzeria & @quite-right-too 🤩
How many works do you have on AO3?
28
2. What's your total AO3 words count?
892,591
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Doctor Who
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Bloodstream (Ten x Rose multi-chap)
Tiny Lights Below (Ten x Rose - Tentoo x Rose OT3)
For All We're Worth (Ten x Rose multi-chap)
Mending (Ten x Rose multi-chap)
The Doctor's Brilliant Idea (Ten x Rose multi-chap)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Always always always, but I have a horrible habit of getting behind on replying to them - usually because I'm busy when I get a comment and consistently forget to come back... Then suddenly there's a ton of them. This is a reminder to sit down and tackle my neglected comments, so thanks, thing.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Ordinary Gifts for sure.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I meannnn, all of my fics have at least mostly happy endings, as I'm a baby. But I'd probably say Bloodstream - just considering the odds that have to be overcome to get there.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Never had until my goddamn Martha fic. But thankfully, the hate was on the latter pairing, not my writing. That's the only solace I took from that (along with some badass readers who defended me to a handful of lunatics).
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I write all of the smut! Lengthy, graphic, emotional 'first time' scenes, as well as all subsequent smut. I have a very, very difficult time skipping over sex (have only done it once to date, and intend to write a separate fic to cover the smut I skipped 💀) and will never skip the first time.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
No, never have.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope, thank god.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Somebody translated Bloodstream into Russian, which was fucking cool.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I'm doing it right now with @bronzeagepizzeria and my excitement knows no bounds.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
TenRose/TentooRose, of course.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Had an idea for a fic inspired by To Have and Not Hold by mtemplar, but have never opened the lil WIP again, and that was over a year ago.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Smut?
Also, not sure if this counts - but I'm a perfectionist about my writing. I'm constantly, obsessively rereading, which I do both as I go and when everything is finished. Making alterations, amending this or that, punching up, rewriting/removing whole scenes etc... But I still, of course, make some mistakes here and there.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I write way too goddamn much. Way too much positive reinforcement in the comments of my first fic gave me a weird perma-complex where I don't even feel like a chapter is complete until it's around 10k, which is insane. Somebody save me. This is a serious problem.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I personally don't do it - I'd rather allude to it. For example, from my fic Exposure, since I guess I'm just going all in with this goddamn questionnaire:
He murmurs something soft, something gorgeous, but Rose has got no idea what it is— only that it's far too structured to be sleepy gibberish. There's an almost-Italian-but-also-sort-of-Arabic resonance to it, yet entirely unique; something she can't even pretend to know how to accurately describe.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The first actual fic I ever wrote was for the Russian girl group t.A.T.u in either 2003 or 2004, but I wrote it at school during 'reading time' in Language Arts. It never saw the light of day anywhere.
The first proper fic I actually wrote, finished, and posted completely was for my first feral fixation ship, Inu/Kag (Inuyasha) back in 2005.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
I fucking hate this question, but probably For All We're Worth or The Purpose of Repose
Tagging: @demdifferentstories @badxwolfxrising @mulderscully @aintfraidanoghosts @deardiary17 @naaer No pressure!

Meet the Writer
ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘɪᴄᴋ ᴜᴘ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴜʀʀᴇɴᴛ ᴍᴜꜱᴇ(ꜱ) ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ?
(CANON MUSES) -
Genesis: I actually HATED Genesis initially in the og CC game. I thought he was a lame addition and just like… idk, they wanted Gackt in the game so they made his presence plot relevant? OOOUGH, I was so mad… But then I saw how the rpc and fandom treats him, which is honestly even WORSE SOMEHOW??? So I decided to try writing him seriously and what do you know, I actually kinda like it.
Verdot: I literally have to make the content I wanna see in this rpc, such is my burden. my curse...
(OCs) - I wanted to write about the themes I have on my pinned and honestly, there were so many Tseng rpers who I am friends and mutuals with that knock it out of the fucking ballpark- I just didn't feel like I'd have ANYTHING new or good to contribute to the exploration of his character? So I made an OC :P And he's really changed so much! I remember when I was still making my own art for him and he wasn't QUITE like there the way I wanted him to be, but I didn't have anything better to employ as a faceclaim or reference to draw from. And then Cas was like "btw here's a manga about your HYPERFIXATION" and Kokonoi's general appearance and vibe was a great starting point to go off of instead.
Anyway, There's always things I had planned for Jae in the works or on the backburner, but he has really evolved over the span of years I've been writing him, so I really appreciate every person who took the time to check him out and build something with him.
ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ?
You know, I have been becoming more lenient with allowing myself to write certain things. I always end up being afraid of how people will react to certain themes I explore because... let's be real, a lot of people are pretty intolerant to opinions that are different than theirs. So long as whatever I and/or my partner explore is handled with the care and respect it deserves, I don't really see an issue with much anymore. Hell, I was terrified to post that one drabble fleshing out Jae meeting Veld for the first time because I was afraid people would see Jae's reaction to killing someone as somehow 'excusing abuse' because he wasn't dancing on the guy's corpse and actually showed remorse for what he did. It's fears of what I write about being misconstrued like that that really makes me hesitant to even talk about certain ideas with partners. But I'm getting over that, little by little and step by step.
ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ?
I actually love writing (as you can tell) introspective pieces. Something where you're really getting inside the character's head for a moment to see past all of their walls and facades, or sometimes you're still seeing what they tell THEMSELVES is the real undiluted truth, but isn't. I just love that kinda stream of consciousness really dig deep into the VOICE of a character exploration. Makes me feel lots of emotions.
ʜᴏᴡ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴꜱ?
Usually I'll be doing something else like watching a piece of media or listening to a podcast and start to think "Ooh, my muse would love this" or "this makes me think of xyz muse wow", and it just kind of expands organically from there.
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ɪɴ ꜱɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴏʀ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀʏ ᴍᴜꜱɪᴄ?
Music helps get me inspired initially, especially since I make spotify playlists for all my muses (and ships :P), so generally I'm cool with music, but usually I zone in too much on my own writing to pay attention. It's like my sense of hearing turns off.
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʀᴇᴘʟɪᴇꜱ ᴏʀ ᴡɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ?
Both- There's always a general sort of... idea or outcome that me and my partner would LIKE to shoot for? And sometimes we just don't get there, because it really depends on what the characters do/say and how it's taken by the other muse.
For example, I was roleplaying a thread with @steeleidolon's Kunsel where he and Jae are trying to broker a deal and Kunsel ends up saying something to the effect of "your people" and he means the Turks. Jae, on the other hand, hears 'your people' and assumes Kunsel was bringing up his race and the perception of fellow people from Wutai or Hanuel being unfairly insular. So, it kinda went to shit, LOL.
It's little things like that that can color your muse's reaction to sometimes very different degrees than what you plan for!
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ꜱʜɪᴘᴘɪɴɢ?
I like complicated dynamics and no, I will never shut up about them. Ships for me don't even have to strictly be romantic or sexual in nature, so like- I have some interactions I'm still feeling out with @saishuu-heiki that are platonic but leaning in a distinctly enemy/frenemy/challenges other person kind of vibe? And I think it's great! They don't HAVE to be like "we're friends, we're lovers, or we hate each other'- Like, limiting all your interactions to one of those three options gets really boring for me...
ᴡʜᴀᴛ'ꜱ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴀʟɪᴀꜱ/ɴᴀᴍᴇ?

The people who have known me the LONGEST are mostly discord only rpers now, but Tricky, HD, Kit, and Vixen I consider to be extremely close to me since we've been friends for... like over or around 6+ years and are still ongoing buddies who have met face to face before.
Then there's my ex-fiancee, but he doesn't do tumblr rp anymore.
This list also doesn't even cover ppl I write with/ooc interacted with over a long period of time like @ivory-paragon, @poeticphoenix, @reapersxfolly, @endweapon, @chthonicsurge, or @dcviltriggcr, so- I like reaching out to people and developing bonds! We don't even have to be on discord capslocking at each other, it's really cool when you can come back to an RPC and still have that connection without any awkward small talk?

Halloween in July (Top Gun: Maverick)
Tumblr media
inspired by my own wish for it to be fall already! watched hocus pocus and ate nutella cookies as i wrote this, so i was really feeling it :)
summary: female reader (she/her) x top gun: maverick Y/N is feeling homesick and missing the New England seasons that she has become so accustomed to. Phoenix decides that it would be fun to throw a Halloween party in July, something to let the team let loose and give Y/N a little taste of her favorite season.
notes/warnings: some good old fluff
word count: 1.0+ k
You weren’t exactly sure what to expect when Phoenix told you that she would be throwing a Halloween party in July at your guys’ shared house. However, you had no complaints.
Halloween was one of your favorite holidays of the year, mainly because it fell in time with your favorite season. There was something special about the fall; the days becoming shorter, air crisp, leaves changing colors before they fall, and cozying up inside to watch movies you’ve grown up watching.
Despite the party being thrown at your house, Phoenix refused to let you help. She had apparently already gone to get decorations from the party store with Bob and had been hiding everything in her closet for the past week.
You were instructed to go grocery shopping while she set everything up. Managing to grab the basic party snacks like drinks, chips, and popcorn, you grabbed a tube of cookie dough that you could hopefully cut into cool Halloween shapes, but arts and craft weren’t really your strong suit.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
As you arrived back to your house you were surprised to see that the driveway and street in front was filled by the cars from the rest of the team.
You opened the door to find black and orange streamers everywhere as black balloons covered the ground and cutouts of bats and pumpkins littered the walls.
“HAPPY HALLOWEEN!” the group exclaimed.
“Let me guess, you’re supposed to be pilots?” you half-laughed at the group in front of you, their usual flight suits on.
“I’m a pilot, Rooster and Phoenix are WSOs,” Bob replied, a large smile spread across his face.
“We didn’t exactly have a lot of time to figure something out,” Rooster explained.
“It’s great, I love it,” you laughed, pulling them into a tight hug.
“Here let me help,” you heard Hangman call from behind, his hands reaching yours as he grabbed the grocery bags.
“Thanks, what are you supposed to be?” you asked, taking in his casual civvy uniform of jeans and a t-shirt.
Hangman lazily pointed to a piece of paper clipped to his shirt that read hottest man alive.
“Original” you snorted out, eye rolling before a large smirk spread across his face.
“It’s good right?” he continued on.
“Who wants to play blood pong?” Payback asked.
“Play what?” you exclaimed, running to the living room in shock at Payback’s statement.
“It’s just cup pong, we dyed the water red. Bob saw it on Pinterest or something,” Phoenix explained, coming to your side as you gave her a funny look.
“You guys really thought of everything huh?” you asked, a smile growing across your face.
Phoenix pulled you in for a side hug before speaking again.
“Of course, we want this to be perfect for you. I know how much you’ve been missing home and I picked up on how you kept ranting about missing your family’s annual trip to the local apple orchard.”
You laughed at that last part of her statement.
“Thanks, Tash,” you said as you pulled her in for a full hug.
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
Hours had passed and the team got drunker as the games went on.
Coyote and you had end up going on a 6-game winning streak in blood pong, so as Phoenix and Rooster had missed many shots, they got drunk pretty quick.
Hangman challenged you in a bobbing for apples contest, loser had to take a shot of moonshine that his family had brought up from when they visited. You weren’t completely sure what it was made from, but it could definitely be considered military grade.
As the sun started to set and evening arrived, the house was finally cool after blasting the air conditioning all day. The team gathered, bundled up in a random assortment of fuzzy blankets that you and Phoenix found in storage, in front of the tv.
You snuggled close to Bob, who sat on your left against the arm of the couch. To your right was a small space for Phoenix who had gotten up to grab the remote, Rooster to her right pressed against the other arm.
Hangman, Payback, Coyote, and Fanboy were sprawled out on the floor in front of the couch, each nursing a bowl of snacks.
“So, what are we in the mood for?” Phoenix asked, taking her seat back on the couch as she scrolled through the tv.
“Conjuring,” Rooster and Hangman said at the same time, doing their best to high five each other as they suggested the same movie.
“No, absolutely not!” Fanboy exclaimed.
“I do not mess with that shit,” he continued.
“I agree with Fanboy, nothing that scary please,” you stated.
“Y/N, I thought you liked scary movies, plus it’s our Halloween night,” Rooster tried to reason.
“Paranormal horror movies are different from homicidal horror movies, they shouldn’t even be the same category,” you stated.
“How about Hocus Pocus?” Bob suggested, pointing at the screen as Phoenix used the remote to scroll over.
“Perfect, that’s my favorite Halloween movie!” you declared in excitement.
“It is a good one,” Phoenix spoke up, clicking play as she leaned further into the couch.
There was a simultaneous groan from Hangman and Rooster who were somewhat displeased from the ‘kiddy’ movie put on.
“Why don’t you boys make yourself useful and get the cookies from the oven,” Phoenix instructed.
They stumbled their way into the kitchen, mumbling between themselves.
A loud bang caught the attention of the group, realization hit as the metal noise of the pan being picked up and placed on top of the stove had Phoenix shaking her head.
“I’m going to kill those idiots,” she began to get up, but they were quick to bring the pan into the living room, a spare plate in hand for serving.
“They weren’t supposed to look like anything right?” Hangman spoke up?
You looked down to see your mediocrely cut-out bats and pumpkins now looking like random blobs on the pan.
“Nope,” you laughed, reaching down to grab one.
As you nestled your way back into the couch you couldn’t help but look around at your team.
You may not have been home, but this was the next best thing. They were your family and you were so incredibly thankful to be surrounded by such genuine and caring people.

Dragon Booster remains one of my favorite life moments, and there have been so many since the show. It was a fantastic journey to be sure, and it often seemed the dragon was in control from the beginning, and the show was meant to be.
Our Canadian partner Alliance Atlantis (Ken Faier and Jennifer Bennett) came on board the very first time they saw the presentation. They learned about the show because Kidscreen Editor Jocelyn Christie loved it so much that she did a feature about it and put us on the magazine cover. We sold the show to CBC (Martin Markle) and Disney (Gary Marsh) with just one meeting.
We already knew Ace Fipke from another company called Mainframe, and NerdCorps in Vancouver was actually custom-built just for Dragon Booster. Our original sales video/animation test was made in a rented apartment that we filled with computer workstations, passionate artists, and animators. That apartment crew became the seeds of NerdCorps Entertainment.
Then, even more, amazing things happened:
Everybody found something different to love about the show and message, which was so rewarding. My co-creator Kevin Mowrer and I lived in the world for years. It began with a feature film prequel idea that takes place years before the series and focuses on Tannis Bllayrr. The world took years to plan and create. It was meant to function as a real place, and we'd hoped to make it into a sprawling online game.
I carefully scripted the show and story for you, the fans, and was thinking about what the story and each detail might mean and hopefully inspire. I wanted Dragon Booster to reflect the world and finding our place in it. Kevin Mowrer shared this vision and carefully put story, emotional content, and personality into every but of art and design he did. The NerdCorps crew picked up the vibe and expanded from there, taking the look and feel of the show and world to even new levels. As a result, the show itself is full of cool double and hidden meanings about culture and our world. Like Mortis might suggest, like Dragon City, and each of us, it all depends on how deep we're willing to look.
Obviously, I'm still a fan myself, and sometimes I look back, and wonder, wow, was I really part of all that? That for me is the best aspect of the creative process, when the community comes together, and when the characters and world take on lives of their own and begin to guide everybody together.
All of you are part of this world now, you have lived in and helped build it. You are part of a long chain of crews, dragon powers, Dragon Priests, and approaches to life that, like the history of Dragon City, have led here. It's a fantastic honor that you continue to explore and expand the history and world of Dragon Booster.
While much of the show still holds up today, one of the things I'm most happy about is the basic message that we can all be superheroes as long as we realize that true superpowers only work for moments, and that they only come out when we're genuinely balanced with ourselves and those around us. I'm super honored how the show has kept so many fans for so long.
Thank you and of course, thanks Beau!
Release the Dragon!

Okay, so everyone gather around, we need to talk about something, well a lot of things. I sat on this a while and was just not sure if I wanted to post this or just deal with it in private. Multiple topics under the cut.
As we know, interaction is terrible on this site now and 90% of people are using it like instagram or twitter. scroll, like, scroll, like. For the love of god, this is tumblr, not instagram or twitter. Please, if you are new here, keep this hellshit enjoyable and listen to creators and other users when we offer suggestions.
New here? read this | and this
Now the topic of reblogs. YES there are some creators who don't care about this and love to shout "no one owes you anything" and everyone is entitled to their options and feelings. That being said, there are many creators who DO CARE about this, me included.
There are many creators who are negatively affected by shitty and no interaction. We love what we do, so will we still do it without you? yes. But we chose to share here because we like sharing, we also like the interaction, we like the community. We do write for ourselves, and because we love it ( so please stop saying that as a generic response when a creator is venting, even if you mean well, it's still not helpful).
We are sharing works FOR FREE with the public and there is nothing wrong with wanting some interaction and reblogs, it's nice, it's a sign of appreciation, for some it boosts our morale as we offer up our babies for public viewing. I know for me, I have been very impacted by the way people use this site now, it sucks, it depresses me. Will it make me stop writing? Never. Will it make me consider keeping my work private at some point and just write in my own little corner of the world where my work is no longer free to view, yeah maybe. This place used to be so inspiring, and that is gone. Sure, some will disagree and that's okay. My blog, my option, my post.
So, when creators are like " hey it would be nice if you reblogged or interacted" it is not us begging, it is not us being babies, it's not us being ungrateful, it is not us disregarding shy or anon readers, its not us saying “wah you owe me!” - its us asking for something that is a great gesture of appreciation for the content you consume, FOR FREE. We are not asking for payout or to praise us, just show some signs of life people. That like button is in the same place at the reblog one, use it. Don't want to mess up your page aesthetic? Well you could make a reblog account. Those are great. I have two of them to support writers.
Am i saying you should reblog everything, no. So don't even bring that up. Reblog what you like. Help it get seen. Likes do NOTHING on tumblr aside from say "hey cool" or “liked this” and there is nothing wrong with that, just if you want to step up your game, reblog it, comment, interact. Have you ever seen a fic on your dash, one someone else shared and loved it? Well, do you know how you saw it? because someone reblogged it. A like did not do that. reblogs = exposure and fic circulation. The fic/gif set/art lives on in a bigger orbit!
Addition: reblog accounts are a thing! Many people do them. It’s an easy way you can keep your page however you want, but still reblog (means share, circulate) the original authors work. You do this by making a Sideblog and can dedicate that to reblogs only. I do that too! I have more than one RB account that is only dedicated to sharing other ppls work.
Now, the next topic...Updates
In the last month I have received lots of messages like "when is so and so being updated" "are you finishing ____" but on these same works, as I'm busting my ass, no one comments, no one reblogs and there's like 4 likes. Many of these messages don't even start with a greeting either.
Sooooo if readers are so ardent to see something, if you are actually reading it, if you want to support the author, how about showing some signs of life? Even if you just go anon and throw a bunch of emojis in their mailbox, that's good too! You can stay anon and be like " hey i really am enjoying that fic" - trust me, you will make the author smile.
One of the issues with this liking only thing is we can't tell if our work is actually being read or valued. And it sucks. Honestly, I don't look at my notifications for likes anymore, I don't. It's discouraging and it feels like no one is reading anything, just blankly liking it as if this was instagram or twitter. Could I be wrong? Sure. Of course. I mean I like stuff to find it later in the day so we have systems right? But this is just me venting on my own page so I'm holding the mic...
All of this is to say, don't demand updates from creators. If you like something, great. If you are excited, great. We love it! I love a well intentioned message from someone excited for an update. Tone matters, don't be a dick, don't be entitled, don't be rude. A creator is sharing their work with you FOR FREE, shit if they want to take 5 months to update, let them take 5 months. if they want to drop it for now and write in a totally new fandom for a bit, let them live.
So, do we love your excitement for updates? YES. But don't be a dick about it, don't demand it. And when said work is posted, how about you hit that reblog button or leave a comment or send some keyboard smashing excitement to their mailbox as a "yay its here, thank you creator"
Now, minors and sketchy looking blank accounts…
We are tired. I AM TIRED. I have never in my life had to do so much followers-list maintenance and I took a break because that shit is exhausting. Please, if you are a minor, do not follow adult blogs, stop ignoring our warnings. if you are a blank blog, take some time to not have a sketchy looking blog. More on this topic in this post.
Next…Complaining how there is no new content
YES there is! Some of you only read works by big blogs and only read their work on certain characters. So no, you can't complain there is nothing new for you to read. Many people do not give other writers a chance and only go to 1-3 blogs as the “be all end all” for a fandom or said characters. There is nothing wrong with favorites. That’s not what I’m taking about here. Branch out, there are so many writers, so many creatives, so many stories. The big and popular blogs are not the only ones who have stories to tell and share. Give other people a damn chance.
Okay, that's all I have to say. If anyone is sick of hearing about any of this, I don’t care. You can filter it out or unfollow. All this needs to be said, so I said it. Not just for me, but for all the creators who are frustrated. And trust me, many, if not most are. Some have left already for the above reasons, plus other reasons. This place could end up without content, slowly, eventually if creators continue to leave. So many have already.
Another topic is inner fandom drama but I’m not gonna touch that. Just be kind to each other, don’t be an asshole. Try to keep these spaces enjoyable. For many of us, this is out little escape.

Geeking out about Arknights, again. This time let me start from the utmost starting point... Introducing this game's vast, vast universe.
Tumblr media
Here we are, the world of Terra. In Terra, the concept of normal humans (homo sapiens) doesn't really exist. Instead we have numerous races of humans, the term humans just refer to people as a whole. Most of the races are just anthropomorphic humans with animal-like features (or just full on furry or even scaly) . I once mentioned the Sarkaz being inspired by demons. We have Felines (self-explanatory), Ursus (Bears), Sankta (angels, they don't have feathery wings but most do have a halo), Liberi (birds), Perro (Dogs), Aegir (Sea animals as a whole), Zalaks (Rodents), Caprinae (Goats), Elafia (deers), Vulpo (Foxes), Lupos (Wolves), Cautus (rabbits), a lot more. I'd be here until tomorrow if I list them all. Of course, not limited to irl animals, we do have races that are based on fictional or supernatural beings.
Btw, miss Specter your beloved is an Aegir and she's based on a now extinct shark species. The type with a round saw blade lower tooth.
The thing about Terra is that the development of it revolves around a fictional crystalline ore called Originium. It's described to be black and semi-transclucent. It's a major source of energy and powers a lot of stuff. Nitrocellulose and gunpowder do not exist, and guns are operated by Originium.
In Terra, there are many natural catastrophes called, well, Catastrophes. Those include, but not limited to, hurricanes, volcano eruptions, sandstorms, hail, sometimes meteor showers. They happen in unpredictable timings, and always leave destruction where they sweep across. That's why the people of Terra developed Nomadic Cities, cities that are built on vehicles that, upon receiving prior predictions of a Catastrophe, would be able to move out of the danger zone.
After a Catastrophe, there remains Originium.
Originium is a fantastic and important energy source, but it comes with trouble. If a person ingests or has prolonged exposure to Originium, they contract a terminal disease called Oripathy and are called, Infected. Bring Infected makes them able to use Arts, Arknights equivalent of magic, way better. But at the same time that accelerates the speed of which their Oripathy gets worse.
The Infected people are very heavily discriminated against in most countries in Terra. Some even get exiled out of their countries after contracting Oripathy, some lose their job, some are kicked from their academies. The Infected are almost treated as "monsters" in Terra.
Fun fact: Most of the countries in Terra are landlocked. The only country that is familiar with the concept of "the ocean" is Iberia and Higashi (see map above) and the concept of the ocean is completely mysterious to non-Aegirian people.
Btw, Arknights is depressing 🥹
Tumblr media
Welcome to Arknights. Maybe I'll talk about the different nations on that Terra map above sometime later hehe
Oh geezus chrust I got a whole introductory book ahahaha!
I was actually very confused and curious when you mentioned that they're largely hybrids but now you mentioning that there's no uh pure humans makes things make more sense. Also Specter is a shark?! Actually you know what, it does make sense after looking at it haha
So that's why they're called Arknights, I've always been confused about that part. Does that mean that uh well do they die faster then? Is that the end game for Oripathy, like what gets worse? Do they get fucked up or smth? It's confusing why they're being discriminated against with this mini summary aha maybe I should read up on that part at least
OH BUT I LOVE THE CONCEPT OF MOBILE CITIES and how they're very much in tune with the worldbuilding in this universe instead of just, ohhh looks cool, let's do that!
Rosmontis :(( (but also my cup of tea tho hhhh sorry sweet child-)
Edit: I now know more about Oripathy.

Masterlist Thing For My Major WIPs
I figured doing this would make everybody’s life easier. XD I also don’t have good enough summaries for my WIPs (in my opinion) to make WIP intros. I’ll update chapter links and stuff as I go along and will maybe probably make a taglist for my stuff (if I don’t forget).
WIP Info
Space Don’t Dictate Fate (HIATUS)
Summary (That I’m willing to give up): A story about gays in space. They all want something that'll be a hella pricey. Do they stick with what'll be good for themselves or fail? Or will they find out there's another way to accomplish some of their goals.
Mostly post snippets. Will answer worldbuilding or oc asks for this one. It was a gift for someone but now it is the most complex child I have created. This story is still very unfinished.
Trailer here!
Main characters: Arc (they/them), Tharion (he/him), Cosma(she/her), and Greeter(she/they)
Face claim/picrew for characters here!
Robots and Gardens (still in the drafting process)
Summary: Imagine how the now present world was imagined and awed upon by previous generations mixed with how it actually is in the present world. Industrialization, overworked employees, coorporate slaves, so many robots, cool technology, hope for a better world. Until it all decides to collapse in a way no one saw coming. Who are we going to take down to stop everything from crumbling.
You can ask me all kinds of questions about this one. XD It’s no where neardone though. I post actual chapters of this... sometimes. XD I’m trying my best. I have a couple chapters out so far which you can read here. Chapters 1/2/3/
Main characters: Digits (she/her), Green (she/her), Peace (she/her), Donnie (he/they), Hollis (she/her)
Face claim/picrew for main characters here.
Fucked at Five (my newest wip!) (may or may not change the title)
Summary (that I have so far): Morphers. An extreme genetic modification that has been gifted by the impatience of the world and the power of science. Morphers have the ability to morph their form into a more animalistic form. All of these forms vary in composition and severity. Morphers are monsters to human kind. Human kind are monsters to morphers. Morphers might just be the new superior, humans are just far too arrogant to see it.
You can ask me all kinds of questions about this one as well. XD I’m still figuring stuff out though.
Main characters: Elliot (he/him), Saz (she/her), Julie (she/her), Ian (he/it)
Face claim/picrew for characters right here.
Character Inspired Playlists here
Character info (General)
Voiceclaims sorta here
Awesome piccrews most of my ocs here
Digits Prosthetic Schematics here
Some art I drew of Digit's prosthetics. A little messy but very detailed descriptions.
Ramblings about fighting styles (Fucked at Five) here
Random Writes!
This is stuff that aren’t any of my major wips. This will be stuff like random prompts or random scenes that can or won’t be related to my main three WIPs. More often not related. This is a lot of the stuff I write, especially when I head back to campus. It can be a mixture of study’s (where I’m practicing a specific thing like action scenes, kiss scenes, grief, etc.), poetry, story’s that drop in at random ass points. Half of the time they won't have titles XD and the characters won't have names.
Cravings (the only finished one for real XD)
Can read that here! cw: blood, gore, cannibalism, sex mention.
I feel like I won’t shut up about this one. XD I’m sorry. I’m really proud of this one.
Melancholic Alcoholic (Poem from awhile ago)
Can read that here!
Cute tag game I did with Green and Peace
Here
Untitled quick write story here
CW: Suicide, Suicidal ideation, suicide attempt mention, and gore.

Random Fucked at Five Stuff here! and here!
Crushing on the Mortuary Man here!

My Characters as excerpts from poems I've written here
Give it some love. I think this is a good insight on some of my characters! And it's a quick glimpse at some of my poetry that I rarely post.

around Summer 2022, i got inspired to make tons of shitty daily art of my thoughts. kinda like a diary.
i never really made too many, since inspiration struck randomly while i was in the middle of summer vacation, and i was pretty busy.
still, the shit i made from that time was.... pretty interesting, to me at least.
i wanted to start making them again, since it was a nice way to warm up, and put my thoughts down.... and, i just liked doing it.
i posted all the original drawings on Twitter, but i decided to post my shit doodles on Tumblr this time. i heard people were better at receiving mental illnesses here.
(don't) Look forward to....

Story of Shin Megami Apples
This game has a story. Shocker, I know. I’m not going to spoil anything about it, but I do want to share a bit of how it came to be.
Tumblr media
A background used in the second area.
The first pitch for the game was a simple story of “Oh noes! Stephanie’s time machine broke and now she needs to get back home! Travel past and future and... get back I guess”. Just a justification to make the game a basic adventure, and meeting fun characters.
Tumblr media
Some of the first Stephanie doodles!
But, for the final boss, I thought it would be really funny to make the final boss a god, because you can’t have an RPG without killing a god at the end. So I searched gods of time and I found the concept of the kairos, the eon and the chronos of Greek philosophy and the idea of the game came to me almost instantly.
With that idea, Thomas, her boyfriend, was added to the story instead of being a Steph solo-adventure. And since his deal was that he could cook pies, I thought to myself “apples”. And that’s why this game is apple, love and time. Like pulled from a hat, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
After that, I just started researching more mythology. And what I learned helped me make the story. For example, the first area was originally going to be just the tutorial area, not much more. But then, I learned of the norse goddess Idun and said “A goddess... of apples?? I have to add her in” so I did, and based the first area on her most important. Plus, that gave me an excuse to add golden apples as collectables and... c’mon, that’s cool. Having stuff to base the characters on makes it so much easier to come up with ideas. Shocker, I know.
As for the areas themselves, they are each based on art pieces! The first one is very clearly based on that very famous melting clock one plus other surrealist pieces from Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte, the second area is based on many expressionist and impressionist paintings, and the last area... well, it’s the one that gave the idea for making everything be based on art pieces. It’s a painting that I saw and inspired this whole ordeal.
Tumblr media
An older version of the first area BG, but it was just too distracting for my liking.
Why is it based on art? Aside of it just being cool, the art references do tell a story too! It’s not, like, crucial to the game, and some of the reasons are very surface level, but I do feel it makes the areas stand out more. Plus, it helps me make backgrounds and decorations easier.
If I could add *anything* to the game, whatever I want, how do you even start? By basing it on the themes of the game and/or art pieces, it narrows down the scope of backgrounds and decorations, and helps me get things done. In general, I think themes are the most important thing to figure out from the beginning if you don’t want your own projects to be generic, but maybe I’ll talk about it another time.
It’s also an excuse to learn about nice art, nice cultures and mythology and not-so-nice art history and not-so-nice history .
If you wanna see the game and ask yourself “Why is Mercury a dog” you can do so here.

hii angelsdean here, i saw you reblogged my art ask game so i wanted to send you a few! palette, inspiration, crayon
omg angelsdean hi!! thank u so much, and thank u for making it its very cool!! ^_^ sorry about the late response, was working on a piece actually lol!
palette: ooh, this ones tough, im like split right in the middle with two choices hehe. i quite love using varying shades and hues of blues! but most of my art ends up being kind of a peachy, almost rosy orange-pink-purple kind of palette :P it always starts out very blue but if i fully finish a piece it usually ends up shifting towards the latter. i love blue seeing as i am a blue guy myself but i can def appreciate both of those palettes!! very fun to work with :)
inspiration: OOH this is so so dear and special to me,, i draw inspiration from most anything that i can!! which includes but isnt limited to: davinci's sketches, baroque art in general, 70s-80s and 2000s retrofuturism (tbh 50s-2000s retrofuturism entirely is just so<333) i was big on the deviantart 2010s like, furry and mlp scene as well LOL so i get insp from there too from time to time! i also have an appreciation for other forms of art such as music, makeup, poetry, dance, etc, and i love kind of translating stuff from there into physical/drawn art :) i also take huge inspiration from my day to day life, the things around me, and my friends, and ofc, all of the media im interested in! (spn, mlp, dexter, stranger things, teotfw etc!) i think i am most inspired/motivated by my life experiences and animals and my passion for biology/anatomy :) i love to create just to create!
crayon: ive been drawing quite literally as long as i can remember! there wasnt ever a time where i wasnt in my memory, i am very very passionate about art in all of its forms and a strong believer that there is so much soul and life and Humanity in creating and sharing and viewing/observing/experiencing art, whether its telling stories or dancing or singing or drawing, i just love love love art. dont get me started on ancient cave drawings LMAO. but anyways sorry that was a tangent, point being that art is very intrinsic to my being, but to get back on topic, ive been drawing for my entire conscious life :) i remember as a wee boy i won an art trophy in my schools district for like, some water safety contest i made a poster for lol. my elective in high school was art, and i spent most of my time physically *in* high school spent in my art teachers classroom, any spare time i had, whether it was supposed to be my spare time or not 😭 as a small small kid i did horse riding, and was very passionate about horses, and had many horse anatomy books and how-to-draw horse books etc etc, was big into bella sara and i adored drawing horses. (later that manifested into an mlp special interest when g4 came out which fueled my art even more, i even run an mlp art request blog w my bf to this day!) but anyways! in my youngest days id draw horses, my family, any animal i could, webkinz, and as a tween-teen it was a bunch of furry art, then youtuber art, then fandom art, etc etc... now its mainly my original stuff and im very into spn right now so! lots of that too :)
sorry for going on such a long rant ahh! 😭 these questions are so cool i just had so much fun answering them lol!! thank you again!!!<3

Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Toby Jones, Tanya Moodie and Sam Mendes
Reflecting on Empire of Light
by Jay S. Jacobs
The flickering lights. The moving pictures. The classic stories. The grand surroundings. The stars, the music, the action, and the heartache. The love and the loss. All with a large, buttered popcorn, some candy and a Coke. You could pass the hours, or even the days away.
Growing up in the cinema was a right of passage for generations. While the grand movie houses have sadly mostly faded away – replaced by sterile, smaller but perhaps more comfortable multiplexes and the rise of home theaters. However, there is truly nothing like seeing a film on a truly big screen.
Writer director Sam Mendes’ latest film is a celebration of cinemas and the people who worked there. Taking place in the early 1980s, it shows an eccentric work family who care for one of these old grand movie palaces, a place called The Empire on the seaside of England.
Soon before the premiere of Empire of Light, stars Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward, Tanya Moodie and Toby Jones and writer/director Mendes held a virtual press conference to discuss the film, which we attended. Not surprisingly, they talked about many of their favorite films and cinemas. Here is some of what they had to say.
Tumblr media
On favorite old movie theaters from their past that inspired them:
Sam Mendes: My first and favorite cinemas were in Oxford. In fact, Toby probably went to them as well, because we grew up in the same place. There was a place called the Penultimate Picture Palace.
Toby Jones: Well, I do remember those cinemas very well. Are they still there? Well, not one. But I lived in Paris for a couple of years while I was training, and the cinema culture there, where you can see a movie from virtually any era in any genre pretty much any day of the week. I saw more movies in a two-year stretch than I'd ever seen before.
Tanya Moodie: Well, where I grew up, there was this sort of predominance of the multiplexes. But there was one, I would say, an arthouse type of cinema. I can't remember the name of it. But I was in my teens, and it used to be basically populated by teens that would go to see things like the Rocky Horror Picture Show and do all the singing and all the dancing and everything. I think it was the nature of all of these teenagers coming together in the dark and doing their things.
Olivia Colman: I remember, I grew up north of Norwich. We'd travel into Norwich to go and see films. There was the ODEON. And I think the Prince of Wales Cinema.
Tanya Moodie: I just remember passing fags back and forth because you could smoke in cinemas back then.
Olivia Colman: Oh, yeah.
Tanya Moodie: It was always this thing of like, that was the place where you got up to all sorts of kissing, smoking, singing. Chucking things about. You just felt this sense of freedom in the dark. Also seeing these stories on a big screen.
Micheal Ward: I grew up around Romford area. That's where we used to go a lot of time to go watch some movies. I remember that we used to go to the Vue Cinema a lot. Then they opened this new one called the Premier Cinema where the tickets were like four pounds. Obviously when you're in school, "Four-pound cinema. Four-pound cinema." So you always used to go there. That's a place that I just watched a lot of films and a lot of my friends saw. Yeah, that is special for me.
Sam Mendes: There was another one called Not the Moulin Rouge. They were rerun houses and repertory cinemas. Impossibly amazing places that showed the movie once and moved on. They had staff of people who literally spent the entire day carrying in cannisters [laughs] of film, projecting it, and taking it out again. I love those places. They were amazing.
Olivia Colman: Also, there was the Arts Cinema. As I got older, became a teen, I discovered the Arts Cinema, and it was a game changer. I felt very cool that I was going to see some arty films. I discovered a whole new genre of filmmaking that I didn't know existed before. That was a big event. Traveling into the city for an hour to go and see a film. Very exciting.
Toby Jones: They were all uniformly well-organized with great information you could pick up. Also impossibly cool clientele that you could associate yourself with.
Sam Mendes: I do have a lot of regret that the next generation won't have the same degree of nostalgia. Not just for the places, but also for the things that we see in the movie; the projection booths and the concession stand. Having said that, there are some amazing cinemas still alive, and I think we should celebrate those and keep those alive rather than worry about the past too much.
On their favorite, formative films:
Tumblr media
Olivia Colman: I watched Breaking the Waves in an art cinema in Bristol when I was a drama student. That was when I went, "Ah, oh, that work." It was so breathtaking. I never want to watch it again. It was too upsetting for Emily Watson to me. Blew my mind. That's when I went, "I want to work like she works."
Sam Mendes: I guess there's sort of two different parts of me. The nine-year-old was Live and Let Die at the ODEON in Camden Town. I remember that vividly. All the black magic and all the voodoo, which retrospectively, perhaps doesn't hold up quite so well. [laughs] But at the time, was thrilling and dangerous and weird and sexy.
Toby Jones: I'm nostalgic about films that I wasn't meant to see at the age I was. That they were aimed at an age slightly older than me. They promised a kind of adult world that I was in a hurry to get into.
Sam Mendes: Then when I was a student, a movie called Paris, Texas. Wim Wenders' movie. That really was the first time I thought, "Maybe I could make movies." It was the first time I sort of was introduced to the notion of to be able to see the contemporary world as a mythic landscape rather than as something domestic and small. So those two things were probably my pivotal experience in cinemas.
Toby Jones: I remember seeing on TV a couple of Joseph Losey films. Particularly The Go-Between, which I found deeply upsetting. But I didn't know why I found it upsetting. I understood everything that was going on, and I understood the plot, but it was something about the atmosphere. To a certain extent, you are the hero. You go with the hero of the story through it. You identify with them. And he is ignorant until the very end.
Olivia Colman: Well, Toby's answer did remind me of sleepovers where we'd all try to get scary films. Still, I am not one for scary film. [laugh] It was my turn for sleepover, about 10 or 11. I said to Mum, "Please, can you get a really scary film?" Because all the other girls have had A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Tanya Moodie: Oh, God. No.
Olivia Colman: I said, "I just wanted to be as cool as them." My mom went into the video shop, and she said, "I've got you A Christmas Carol." What? She said, "Well, it's got ghosts. I thought that would be scary." I was so embarrassed. I pretended that the video shop was closed. That was really, really not cool.
Tanya Moodie: I remember being very emotionally permeable when I was younger and things having a massive impact on me. I don't know if kids nowadays would. Do you know what I mean? Because they have so much access to things that would, for us, would've been quite upsetting when younger. For them, they'd get annulled emotionally. I remember seeing like A Clockwork Orange probably when I was too young as well to see it. And being really, really, like, freaked out by the violence and everything.
Toby Jones: That had a huge impact on me. Even now, I remember going in for one movie and then trying to sneak out and get into [an] X film. Film and cinema seemed to encapsulate that feeling of that somewhere in this building there will be a taboo experience that you can get access to when you're young. In a way, you never lose that sense of them being, the potential of those buildings for that experience.
Tanya Moodie: The Elephant Man as well.
Olivia Colman: Oh, God, yeah.
Tanya Moodie: Feeling desperately sad in the fact by this man who was treated so badly. I think he's given a gift of like a brush. And just like weeping, just being like, "Oh my god, this poor man." And apart from that, Pink Panther films. [laughs]
Olivia Colman: Yeah.
Tanya Moodie: They were always a treat, right?
Sam Mendes: With Peter Sellers. Yeah, totally.
Tanya Moodie: When they came on the telly. It was like…
Sam Mendes: … It was a big deal….
Tanya Moodie: … It was an event at home to watch Pink Panther. We all just absolutely pissing ourselves.
Micheal Ward: For me, a movie that comes to mind is a Jamaican film called Shottas. I feel like the reason why I had a mad connection with this film is because I didn't know what Jamaica was like. I moved to England when I was quite young. So for me, it was like this connection in an intimate way with Jamaica. You can watch music videos and stuff and formulate what it would feel like. But it felt like this movie was like a documentary. It felt very real and authentic. I just used to love it. So yeah, it's something I watched time and time again.
Sam Mendes: What's it called?
Micheal Ward: It's called Shottas. Yeah. It's really good.
Sam Mendes: Shottas.
Micheal Ward: Yes. Shottas. [laugh]
Tumblr media
On their comfort films:
Olivia Colman: Oh. Don’t do me first.
Toby Jones: That’s hard, isn’t it?
Olivia Colman: That’s hard.
Sam Mendes: I guess our minds immediately go to the pandemic, weirdly, so the idea of what comforted us during the pandemic is not a movie theater, sadly, because we weren't able to go. But I find that, as a filmmaker, I go back always to the same films to remind me how to make films. [laughs]
Toby Jones: I always feel in debt to all the films I haven't seen. I feel a constant sense of I can't watch that again. I've got to see something new. For some reason, I love films about New York, and I find films about New York very comforting. There's something about the layout of apartments. There's something about watching actors or characters cross streets, wander down streets that I always dreamt that one day I'd have an opportunity to do.
Tanya Moodie: Like Toby, it's about place really. I spent quite a few years living in and out of Sweden. So any Swedish film, I find it brings me comfort, because it brings me back to that time. Anything by Bergman, if I sit down and watch it. Fanny and Alexander, which is probably about 10 hours long, I can sit and watch it. I haven't seen it in ages, because normally if that's the one, if someone says, “Oh, what do you want to watch?” and I go Fanny and Alexander, the room just… [laughs] Everybody goes [groan].
Sam Mendes: They've just rereleased it.
Tanya Moodie: I don't really see it anymore, but it brings me immense comfort to see those films again.
Sam Mendes: Godfather 2 would be the obvious one I must have seen a dozen times and I tend to watch to remind me how to do it. The economy of means, the astonishing performances, the way it shifts back and forth from time, the lighting, everything really. It's just an unbelievable piece. I mean, both Godfather movies were, and I find that comforting. I find being reminded of just sheer excellence comforting.
Tumblr media
Micheal Ward: For me, what brings me comfort in film is that watching someone that I really love and really admire, but their earlier work. One that comes to mind for me is Soul Plane, because I really, really love Kevin Hart. That was, I think, his first movie that he was the lead of. And it's just so funny. I find comfort in laughter as well. Just being able to let go and laugh with the characters, for me, that's really, really fun. It's a wild story, but I just love it. You got people like Snoop Dogg in there and stuff like that, who are also people that I love and admire.
Olivia Colman: I like kids’ films. If I'm about for comfort, I could watch Paddington all day, every day.
Tanya Moodie: Mmm, mmm. It’s very good.
Olivia Colman: I need a happy ending. Kid shows, they always break your heart at some point in the film. Toy Story 3, [groan] heartbreaking. But if I was going for comfort, I'm thinking of being at home, not in the cinema. Sorry. [laughs] Duvet, cup of tea, kids’ film.
Toby Jones: Just literally just behavior watching. I find that I’m often not watching the story. I'm literally just watching behavior. I find that absolutely fascinating. I suppose New York is, for a lot of British people, a landscape of dreams anyway. It's what we grow up dreaming that one day we'll have some relationship with. I think that's all tied up with films about New York. So obviously, people like Scorsese and Woody Allen had a profound effect on me.
Micheal Ward: Soul Plane is definitely a comfort. I probably watched that film over 100 times. Where I used to live in London when I was younger, it was just like me, my mom, and my sister in this one room. We had the DVD that we bought, and every time after school, I'd watch it. Like literally every single day, because it was like the only thing we had. I never really had a PlayStation and stuff like that. So I knew all the words and everything. Truly, it's one of my favorite films. [laughs]
Sam Mendes: Actually, I’m going to say one more, which is the one film that gets better every single time I watch it, Withnail and I.
Olivia Colman: Oh, God, actually yes.
Sam Mendes: I can just watch it now quite happily.
Olivia Colman: Yeah.
Micheal Ward: What’s it called?
Olivia Colman: And Some Like it Hot.
Sam Mendes: Withnail.
Olivia Colman: Withnail and I. You’d love that.
Tanya Moodie: I’ve never seen that.
Olivia Colman: That’s amazing.
Tanya Moodie: My gosh.
Olivia Colman: Yeah.
Micheal Ward: Got to see it.
Tumblr media
On work families:
Sam Mendes: Growing up I suppose, it was the only real family I knew. I grew up alone with my mom, and a lot of this movie is based around those memories of growing up with somebody as an only child with an only parent who in turn was struggling with mental illness. A lot of what I went through with her is reflected in Hilary's [Colman] journey in the movie.
Olivia Colman: Almost every film or job I do, you have a part-time temporary ad-hoc family. You become very close. You're in each other's pockets, day in, day out. When I was younger, I found it quite hard that that always had to change. But I got better at it. Now the people that you really love, you will stick with. You might not see each other a few years, but you'll come back. I've always loved that. When I first went into acting, [it] felt like I'd found my tribe.
Sam Mendes: If you look at any of the movies I've made, there are no functional families [laughs] in any of them, really. That wasn't deliberate. It was pointed out to me recently that there aren't any normal families. In a way, the healthiest family is the relationship between Stephen [Ward] and Delia [Moody] in this movie. Between Stephen and his mom.
Olivia Colman: People that I understood, got on with, emotionally available people. So that is my experience with an ad-hoc family, I think. Actors and crews.
Sam Mendes: The collection of eccentrics that gathers in the cinema is very much like the collection of eccentrics that gather in the theatres that I worked in. The families I found were all cobbled-together outcasts [laughs] who found somehow a home in those places.
