Because of the implication that Karlach didn't know any of the more devious shit Gortash was doing while she was employed by him, I HC that he sold her at a point where he couldn't be as covert in his private dealings. Like it was a point where she clearly was going to be a liability and she's good. Too good. Like to her core.
And there isn't a whole lot different between himself and the tiefling rascal he took in so she could support the parents she loves so much. I think that at a certain point he'd just be kinda aggravated because, to him, her view of the world is so idealistic. I like the idea of him having a little bit of petty jealousy, but I can't see that being the motivator for the sale. I think he really believed she was strong enough to handle it - because he was strong enough to withstand the hells - and wanted her to be humbled, in a way. he needed her to have a taste of the real world, so to speak, because his understanding is that it's a cutthroat world and all people are pawns, regardless of age or relation.
that's not a way karlach can live tho
and then she comes back, broken, sure. she has her whole thing where she can consume the soul coins, which ultimately has her viewing lost souls as tokens/pawns in the way gortash sees all people, but she clearly struggles with it and it wasn't a choice she made, but something zariel pushed on her so she could survive.
regardless, karlach's optimism is unwavering and she's still so vivacious. She's angry, understandably so, she has scars, she's done shit she isn't proud of, but she, herself, was never corrupted. when she escapes, she immediately goes full hero mode, she just has the burden of the soul coins to bear bc NO ONE can come out of that situation completely unscathed. and remember the types of friends she made in the hells!!! her one only helps her if it comes with a double-edged sword. despite that, she doesn't prevent it from allowing her to bond with the companions.
so she comes back proof that you can go through what Gortash did and come out mostly in tact. you may be hurt, she shouldn't have HAD to go through that, but she's fighting for a better future for herself (even if that means dying to not return to avernus). Unlike Gortash, she doesn't need to bring the world to heel to pay for the cruelty it showed her.
in fact, everything she went through just makes her appreciate the little good in her life even more and motivates her to aggressively protect her friends.

Poll adventure (paventure? lol) Day 16: read the small story tidbit below the poll for more details, OR just vote based on initial impression
(✦ see past poll results + further information HERE (link) ✦)
Yesterday's poll decided that The Adventurer should offer to help the travelers with their broken wagon.....
~
After much internal deliberation (and some zoning out staring at butterflies), The Adventurer decides it would be best to offer his assistance. Technically, he IS still following his goal of not getting distracted, because theoretically it would make his journey much faster if he were able to catch a ride on a carriage. So really, this is all an ultimate big brain genius strategy for maximizing efficient travel.. Or, at least that sounds like a good enough justification to him.
Gathering up all of his social courage, he approaches one of the travelers fiddling with a broken wheel near the far end of the carriage and meekly asks if there's anything he could do to help.
The man was so focused on his task, he seems initially startled to look up and find someone near him. "OH..! Oh, uhh.. help? With the wagon?", he smiles pleasantly, gesturing towards a few wooden boards that are just out of his reach, "Sure, kid. If you could just hand me th-"
"Apologies, but we actually won't be needing your assistance, stranger." A taller man, surprisingly almost matching the stature of the Adventurer, suddenly slinks out from somewhere behind the carriage, sternly placing himself like a barrier in front of the man working on the wheel. Wheel Guy nervously averts his eyes, making himself smaller, silently resuming his work.
The Adventurer tries his best to maintain composure against the weight of the tall man's bitter gaze, but can't seem to muster much of a response "Aeughh,,, uh… b-but, h- Bu--HHHh,,?.."
"Look, disregard whatever my father told you, he's old, never has any clue what he's talking about. It'd be best for you to simply move along." ('Father'? They don't look alike at all, and seem to be nearly the same age..)
"W-well.. he.. he didn't really tell me anything, I me-hhH,,.. I mean, I literally just got here, s-so...."
"Good. Even more reason to be on your way."
Placing a gloved hand firmly on his shoulder, the tall man begins to motion the Adventurer away from the wagon, but a strange noise interrupts, echoing from inside. Perhaps some sort of animal sound? Or a person faintly yelling about something? Or… both?
"WH-wHggg… whAT was t-that???!!" The Adventurer immediately stops in place, pausing to listen as the tall man keeps trying to push him ahead.
"I didn't hear anything, stranger."
"No, t-there.. was dEFinitely, UHH, a-"
"Likely something in the forest."
"Wh--aah... d.. do you think it was an animal?"
The tall man continues a dramatic struggle to 'subtly' drag him further down the road, whilst the Adventurer mindlessly digs in his heels, too distracted to even notice he's being so strongly prompted to leave.
"Many animals do, indeed, exist within forests. This should not be suprising."
"...It's just.. ..eughh… s… so weird…"
"I assure you, it is not."
"I-it really sounded like.. like it came f-from insid-"
"Yes, from inside the forest. Now, please, if you would.."
The noise interrupts again. It's definitely someone, or something, in some sort of distress.. And definitely from inside of the cart.
"wHoAAGH, aa!!! T-tHat's NOT from the f-forest, that-"
The tall man fully just shoves him now, sending the Adventurer toppling across the dirt, clumsily rolling and landing just past the other side of the carriage. A mother and young child who seem to be part of the traveling group simply stare down at him with empty blank gazes, wholly unconcerned about helping him up.
As the Adventurer fumbles back to his feet (still confused as to why he was even pushed in the first place), the tall man looms by the carriage, diligently watching to ensure that he leaves.
"Travel safe, stranger."
Despite his initial obliviousness, the Adventurer begins to piece the situation together as he stares back at the man, now fully convinced something suspicious might be going on...
…What should he do next??

A Necessary Evil
I have made... pain. Set in the book canon after the Bloodbath at Nightless Sky, in the cave where Lan Zhan has taken Wei Ying. This is all just dialogue. I may flesh it out into a full scene later, but I kind of like this stripped down version, so (with the help of my favorite enabler @dovebeast) I decided to just... post it.

WWX's POV, LWJ's POV
Tags: Major Character Death, time travel, hurt/comfort but mostly hurt, I'm not going to lie this is all angst, not a happy ending

"Did you see them, Lan Zhan? Did you see?"
"Wei Ying--"
"United in their hate."
"Let me--"
"But they were united."
"Wei Ying?"
"It doesn't work if there's no villain, Lan Zhan. This world doesn't work if there's no one to hate."
"I don't understand."
"You should go. Leave me. They'll only hurt you if they find you here."
"I won't leave you."
"So stubborn, Lan Zhan. So good. Always so good."
"Wei Ying, I--"
"At least Shijie is alive this time."
"This time?"
"Yes. Oh, Lan Zhan, I've done this so many times. I'm so tired."
"Rest. I will be here."
"They're coming. They'll be here soon. They'll take you. You should let them take you."
"I will not le--"
"A'Yuan needs you, Lan Zhan. Let them take you."
"Wei Ying?"
"It's okay. I-- Like I said, it doesn't work if there's no villain."
"Why you?"
"If not me, then who?"
"Not you."
"It's okay, Lan Zhan. I know. I know. You've stayed with me before."
"Before?"
"Yes. You're always so good. Too good. They hurt you when you fight. Don't-- Don't let them hurt you. A'Yuan needs you."
"A'Yuan?"
"He needs you to raise him. I know you'll take such good care of him, Lan Zhan. You always do."
"Wei Ying, I don't understand."
"I know. It's okay."
"Please, Wei Ying, I--"
"Don't say it. Don't say it, Lan Zhan. It only hurts more if you say it. If I-- Don't say it."
"Okay. Okay, Wei Ying."
"Let them take you. When they come, just go with them. Don't fight."
"They will kill you."
"Yes."
"I won't--"
"You must. They need a villain. They don't need two. But if you stay with me, if you fight them for me, that is what you become. A'Yuan needs you."
"Okay. Okay, Wei Ying."
"Hold my hand?"
"But--"
"I only said not to say it. Not that it's unwelcome."
"Wei Ying--"
"Shh. Hush now, Lan Zhan. Just hold me. They'll be here soon."
"If you've done this before, why not fix it? Why not live?"
"It doesn't work. It all falls apart. The clans fall to each other if not to Wen Ruohan. They need--"
"A villain. So you've said."
"Ah, Lan Zhan! Interrupting me, so bold!"
"I am trying to understand."
"I know. I know. There's no time. Which will be very funny to you later. Nothing but time. Maybe I will see you again, Lan Zhan."
"They will kill you."
"Yes. Yes, and you should let them. So you can save A'Yuan. Maybe, maybe you can make them all see. Make them open their eyes in the Burial Mounds. Make them see who it is they're running through."
"Why can't we show them together, Wei Ying? Why?"
"It doesn't work. It's too late for me. You saw what I did to them. You saw the monster I've become."
"Wei Ying--"
"I asked you to kill me once. If I was too far gone. Do you remember that?"
"I do."
"Would you do it now?"
"Wei Ying?!"
"I know. You're too good, Lan Zhan. You never agree to that."
"Wei Ying, please."
"I could make you."
"Wei Ying?"
"I could make you kill me. I haven't tried that before. You would be the hero, then maybe you could stop the slaughter."
"You are not a villain, Wei Ying!"
"I am. I'm a monster, haven't you heard? A demon. You would be venerated for putting me down."
"Please..."
"It would crush you to do it, I know. We could do it together, you and I. Draw your sword, Lan Zhan."
"No."
"Lan Zhan, they'll kill me either way. Let me die like this: in your arms, with you by my side."
"I can't--"
"A quick slide, right through my ribs. It will be almost peaceful this way."
"No!"
"You can hold me. They'll praise you for it. You'll hate that, but then the spoils will be yours. You can claim them. It could work, Lan Zhan."
"Wei Ying, please do not ask this of me."
"It's too much. I know. I know, Zhiji."
"Zhiji. Zhiyin. Wei Ying."
"You would do it if I asked you to. I know you would. But is that something I can let myself ask of you? Is it too cruel? To make you bear this with me? To make you take some of the weight."
"Please, don't... Please, Wei Ying."
"Draw your sword, Lan Zhan."
"Wei Ying."
"Good. Good. It'll be quick. So quick. Don't worry, they'll be here soon. They'll see. They'll help you. Your brother will help you. Yes, right there. It's okay, Lan Zhan. It's okay. It's okay if it's you."
"This is not--"
"I know. I know. Just hold me."
"Wei Ying?"
"Yes, Lan Zhan?"
"May I say it."
"Ha. Yes, Lan Zhan. I think. I think I'd like to hear it."
"I love you, Wei Ying."
"I know. I love you, too, Lan Zhan."
"I know."
"It's okay, Lan Zhan. Deep breath. That's it. It's okay. It will be okay."
"What's that?"
"Footsteps. They're almost here. Lan Zhan, please. You can do it. Please. Lan Zh--"
"Wei Ying."

"Wei Ying."

"I love you."

"I'm here."

For my beyond evil prompt post! thanks @tiffanylamps for the inspiration!!
It's not like he wants to be here, if Joo Won had an actual choice he would be at his apartment, cooking the new recipe he discovered while listening to music before settling down for the night to read his book.
But Kwon Hyuk was getting married and as much as Joo Won hates his father, he cares triple that for his adoptive brother....most days.
Joo Won sighs again as he pulls gently on his tie, it feels tight and suffocating around his throat. The whole outfit makes him uncomfortable now, they used to fit like a glove but he gave up suits and tuxedos and a manicured life years ago.
He's watching Kwon Hyuk dance with his bride, Oh Ji Hwa who looks stunning in a simple white dress and something inside of him squeezes in equal parts envy and happiness for his brother. Hyuk couldn't have chosen a better bride (despite his fathers complaints about it) she was strong, fierce, and patient and has had her now husband wrapped around her finger since day one.
She's good for him, makes Hyuk stand up for himself more and start demanding more control over his father's company, helps his adopted brother balance the expectations and the reality of what it means to take over a company. Plus Joo Won thinks that Han Ki Kwan might be a little afraid of her, which makes her almost perfect in his book.
Joo Won takes a sip of his drink, looking down at his watch and sighing when he realizes it's still too early to leave without being extremely rude. The chandelier in the banquet hall feels too bright and the sounds are spread out but loud and chaotic-- people talking, others laughing, music blaring and it's all too much for Joo Won's brain at the moment.
He swallows the last bit of his drink before standing, grabbing another full one and making his way to one of the small balconies on the other side of the room.
The fresh, cool air feels like a gift and he finally allows himself to loosen his tie.
He's taking another sip of his drink when the door pushes open and he looks over to see a familiar mess of curls, the sigh that leaves his lips in almost involuntary at this point.
Dong Sik glances up at the noise before his whole face alights, "Joo Won- ah! There you are!"
Joo Won scrunches his nose up at the familiarity, "Lee Dong Sik-ssi, i've told you to stop being so informal with me."
The smile only grows at his words and the older man comes to stand next to him, only a few inches apart and Joo Won can't bring himself to put distance between them. There's alot of things he can't seem to do around the older man.
"You're late."
He says it to fill the silence, watching as the older man seems surprised but then a soft smile appears on his face. Joo Won hates when Dong Sik uses those looks around him... they make him feel things he's unfamiliar with.
Dong Sik's shoulder brushes his and Joo Won's whole body responds, like it always does. The tingle shooting from his arm all the way down to his toes.
"Hmm... did you miss me, Joo Won-ah?"
It's said so softly, so sincerely and Joo Won inhales sharply, turning to grab the older man by his tie and yank him in for a hard, burning kiss. Dong Sik seems shocked for a half second before leaning in, resting his hands on Joo Won's hips in a way that pins him to the spot but soft enough for him to break free. Dong Sik always leaves him an out.
He shoves his fingers into Dong Sik's hair, the softness on his finger tips making his chest ache with need and the older man lets out a breathy moan as their mouths pull apart slightly.
They are both breathing heavily, the taste of Dong Sik still on his lips as the older man's breath fans across his mouth and Joo Won's heart lurches at the intimacy of it all.
He loves this stupid old fool so much, probably has since the day he met Ji Hwa and her friends. Joo Won can remember being equally interested and annoyed with the loud older man, who smiled and laughed like the entire world and it's problems meant nothing-- a complete contrast to the recently disowned Joo Won.
Joo Won takes a deep breath, scared of what he was going to say next but also certain in his actions. He looks up at the older man and breathes out a soft, almost strangled, "Yes."
Dong Sik blinks at him in confusion, "What?"
Joo Won feels the blush on his face, feels his ears burning hot but he leans back in and softly kisses Dong Sik's lips again before pulling back and speaking louder, "Yes... to the question you asked me a while ago."
Dong Sik still looks confused before it suddenly dawns on him, and Joo Won isn't prepared for the way Dong Sik lurches forward and captures his lips into a searing kiss. It's hot and molten, making his insides feel hot and when the older man's tongue licks into his mouth deeper Joo Won feels his legs shake. Dong Sik's hands are tight against his hips and Joo Won gasps when the older man bites his bottom lip before pulling away.
He can't imagine what he must look like right now but Dong Sik's lips are swollen and red, his eyes blown wide but are still bright with happiness, "Yes. You are finally going to date me?"
Joo Won snorts, leaning his forehead on Dong Sik's shoulder, "I think we've been dating for a while now."
He feels Dong Sik's head shake and he already knows what the man is going to say, "Nope, the stubborn prince I'm in love with refused to make it official."
Joo Won feels a little guilt rise in his belly but he ignores it in favor of the way the older man said 'love' and the hand Dong Sik has rubbing up and down his back, "Well, he sounds like an idiot."
Dong Sik laughs out loud, the noise sending tingles down Joo Won's back and he smiles into his lovers neck. The older man hums, "No, he was never an idiot. My prince was just hurt and needed some time to recover."
Joo Won blinks back tears and straightens back to his full height, looking down at Dong Sik and into his eyes, "Lee Dong Sik-ssi. Would you please date me?"
Dong Sik smiles and kisses him gently, "Yes. Of course, my stubborn prince."
