inkfish biology headcanons. take them or leave them.

• inkfish usually leave the opposing team’s ink colour (muted or not) at the tips of their tentacles. this prevents the opposing team’s ink from causing burns or stinging sensations when hit.

• ink gradients on hands and feet can be naturally occurring, but are also commonly used as a fashion statement. can be done several ways, including using manufactured dyes, tattooing, and soaking the body parts in naturally occurring ink. some particularly fresh inkfish incorporate multiple colours, and depending on method can last several weeks or months before fading, or be permanent. several methods can also be used to stain designs into the skin, or create gradients on tentacles that do not affect ink colour.

• inkling and octoling tentacles can be cut, styled, and burned with no pain, but the more modified they are, the more likely it is to affect their swim form or general function.*

*octoling tentacles move by themselves naturally, but more extreme modifications can cause them to become sluggish or stop moving entirely.

• some octolings have retractable claws extending from their fingertips. these need to be regularly maintained, or they will become overgrown and become prone to injury/infection due to not being able to fully retract. these can also be painted or dyed.

How specifically does water affect inkfish? How dangerous are minor weather events such as snow and rain to them?

Contrary to popular myth, water doesn't "kill" or hurt inkfish. That would be... impossible. Every living thing needs water to survive.

However, this myth may have originated from a few different reasons.

First is the fact that inkfish can't really swim. Their ink sac is too dense, enough that they tend to sink like a rock if submerged.

Second is turf war. Within turf war, there's localized teleportation that causes the "splatting" seen during the game. The sensors in that equipment teleport you if you are in any way unable to breathe- including being covered by enemy ink, or being suberged in water. To those who don't know much about inkling biology, this looks a lot like the water is killing them.

Third, is that inkfish are actually hyper sensitive to contamination in water. Their skin is extremely thin and porous, and is partially used to breathe in their own ink, similar to amphibians. This means that, like amphibians, they're SUPER sensitive to bacteria, chemicals, and other stuff in water and can get sick in it super easily. An inkfish that gets wet with nasty water (or even non-inkfish approved soap) can get violently ill.

All water that goes to inkfish homes, drinks, and such are filtered specially to be hyper-sensitive. Inkfish soaps, bath bombs, and other cleaning supplies also have to be specially made for them because of their sensitivity.

TLDR, water doesn't hurt inkfish, the stuff inside of it does.
