While I get why they didn't include it (because 4e fucked with the tieflings and now we have archdevil tieflings and the og hereditary tieflings in the same space, and the former are hogging the limelight) I think it would've been interesting to have Bhaal tieflings as a subrace option. They wouldn't look as flashy as the others - no horns, no technicolour skin or tail, for example (unless their mortal parent was a tiefling who looked like that, I guess) - but they would be highly inclined towards violence and murder. Deity descended planetouched are known for having birthmarks in the shape of their ancestor's holy sumbol, so maybe they'd have the Circle of Tears, or a bone dagger marked somewhere on their skin.

I mean, Durge's origin pretty much covers everything they'd bring to the table, so it's obsolete, but the thought stays in my head:

The first generation Bhaalspawn did reproduce: Abazigal had at least one son; Yaga-Shura was attempting to create half-giant progeny; most of the romance epilogues feature children (this was intentional, the original BG3 was supposed to have Charname's child as the protagonist, apparently). There were hundreds of Bhaalspawn who reached adulthood; many of them would've had the opportunity to marry or have children, knowingly or accidentally.

I've said this before, but again, the offspring of a quasi-deity and a mortal is a tiefling, genasi or aasimar and the divine blood may go dormant and activate generations down the line too. It's also not unknown for the planetouched to become pawns in their ancestor's games, and entire lineages (not simply the first half-outsider child alone) may be created intentionally.

Notably, Abazigal's son Draconis - a grandchild of Bhaal, and not a demigod - was not part of the giant prophecy his father, aunts and uncles were drowning the world in blood over (except as a pawn of his own half-mortal father, anyway). These planetouched mortal children would've been passed over unharmed and unnoticed (too unimportant on the divine stage). I wonder how many of Bhaal's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are running around? How many cousins might Orin have? How many nieces and nephews might have Bhaal's strings tied around them? Is resist Durge going to leave behind their sister/niece drama only to run into another one in the future?

(I am aware that it appears BG3 has ignored/handwaved away the existence/possibility of these guys: I don't care. BG2 left these plot threads and I will be taking then and running off with it.)

I made these refs back for this year’s Artfight, but never got around to finishing the rest of my characters’. I nickname these three “the main trio” because they’re the three splatoon characters I draw and like the most. All three have a thing in common, albeit for different reasons: they all don’t go by their original names! If you’d like to read character ramblings, look below the cut, if not, you may do what you like.

Things to note: My Splatoon characters are stuck in Splatoon 2 purgatory, so the weapons, ages, and all that are stuck in that time period. (R) and (UR) is short for (restricted) and (unrestricted), which is referring to if the height is measured within a canon limitation, or without canon inkfish heights in mind.

Mochi

Dawn “Mochi” Funboruto

cis female (she/her)

Aged 16

5’ (R) - 5’7” (UR)

Mochi is an interesting inkling, not actually originating in Inkadia at all, instead from a far-off city by the name of Arrecife. She’s childhood friends with Slick, and only moved to Inkopolis because he’d shown it to be a hot spot for things of interest. She’s a Humboldt inkling, but cursed with an unusually small stature compared to her relatives, making her appear as an average inkling. Evidence of her ancestry can still be found in her sucker rings, which, unlike most inklings, are still very-much there. She’s described as sisterly, laid-back, and sarcastic, but can also snap to a very energetic, mischievous, and havoc-causing individual. She never seems to stand still, even while relaxed, quite fidgety by nature. She tries not to overthink, which can lead to poorly thought-out choices that result in unpleasant outcomes. She’s easily persuaded by bribes of food or money, which some of her friends take advantage of for her to do stupid dares, tasks, or for her to not blackmail them. She jokes around and doesn’t usually bring up serious subjects unless she thinks it’s important. She often has to be the straight-man around people like Slick, but also can join in on the mischief. She’s also agent 4, but it doesn’t really become super relavent. She goes by Mochi just because she feels like it, nothing else, really.

Slick

Mason “Slick” Stone

cis male (he/him)

Aged 15

4’11” (R) - 5’5” (UR)

Slick is a goofy character, son of a single mother and always trying to get up to antics. He is from the town of Arrecife, childhood friends with Mochi, and forming a chaotic duo whenever they decide to meet up. He’s quite full of himself, exasperates his accomplishments, and thinks he’s practically irresistible. Despite his arrogance, he possesses a heart of gold, and just wants to befriend anyone he can. He may not be the brightest, but he tries his best, even if it doesn’t work out. He has no concept of boundaries, and has broken into people’s houses to give them gifts. He went out of his way to befriend Hachikō, despite the people around him scoffing at him for it. Despite Hachikō’s not-super-great-but-understandable Inklish at the time, Slick was very accepting and thought it was more funny than anything. As their friendship grew closer, Hachikō moved in with him, and they currently share an apartment. Slick gave himself that name because he wanted to sound cool and dissociate with his father.

Hachikō “Hachi” ??

5’1” (R) - 5’9” (UR)

Hachikō, an amnesiac found in a place he feels lost in. He’s agent 8, and his story of venturing to the surface is one that only some know of. His Inklish is practically perfect in the current day, with only the slight hiccup and forgetting some words. He’s quiet, observant, and tends to appear stiff around unfamiliar people. He doesn’t talk much, instead thinking to himself a lot, sometimes staring off into space and getting lost in thought. He can be quite chatty if asked about anything of interest to him (ink weaponry, birds, etc). He tends to fidget, sometimes needing to occupy his hands by drawing. He takes most things seriously, or as they’re spoken, which has led to him not understanding jokes, and not always pinpointing sarcasm. He’s quite paranoid and constantly worried about being outed as an Octoling, or something going horribly wrong. It’s not uncommon for him to get sick due to being exposed to unfamiliar surface pathogens. Upon reaching the surface, he discovered he had a pollen allergy, which has lead to mockery by his friends for “sneezing like Lil’ Judd”. Slick is who he’s often seen with, eventually even being roommates with, almost always being the nervous straightman to Slick’s antics. Roxanne (agent 3) often babies him and comes to his aid, even when it’s made obvious that he’d rather her not. He appreciates her kindness, but not being infantilized. Hachikō picked his name because he had no memory of his original name, picking one that seemed familiar to him (might’ve heard it in a story once).

Ariel’s “Siren Song”

So I’ve been reading the Guide to Merfolk book. It dives into the lore in The Little Mermaid (2023) universe and has brought up a lot of interesting things.

One of those things is Siren Songs and their variants. Each song type has different abilities. One of them is the well known “lure” ability, but there are others.

Ariel sings to Eric after rescuing him from the shipwreck, and an observing Sebastian says smthg about her using her “siren song”. As Siren Songs have different types, I believe the song Ariel sings to Eric on the beach is different from the song Vanessa/Ursula sang to him on the rock.

HEART SONG

An aria sweet as honey dripping

Sends cool hearts aflame and senses slipping--

Lulling the longing to wander and stray,

Following the ballad into the spray.

ERIC’S NOTES: “Yeah, this would never work on me. Not in a million years.”

For context, the blue writing is notes that Eric has left behind. The way the guide book reads, it’s as though we’re in Eric’s study reading this book after he has.

A “Heart Song” is basically a love song. It makes the victim fall senselessly in love with the siren, and is basically romantic brainwashing. I believe this is the song Vanessa/Ursula tried to use on Eric on the rock.

His comment about “it never working on him” makes me even more sure, given that we know, despite using Ariel’s Heart Song, Eric was still not completely in love with Vanessa and was still pining over real Ariel. I believe him saying “it would never work on him” is supposed to be irony/foreshadowing.

HEAL SONG

A potent siren tune more sharp than flat

Mends bruised wounds from scraps and bites from the bat--

Fighting poison to cleanse and to discard,

Restoring health through the melodic bard.

ERIC’S NOTES: “Hey! I wouldn’t mind this song one bit.”

Meanwhile, I believe the song Ariel sings to him on the beach is her “Heal Song”, a song that cures wounds and ailments.

Ariel does not know human anatomy. She might have books about certain things and knows humans can’t breathe underwater, but she does not know how to medically resuscitate a human, and her pats on Eric’s chest did absolutely nothing. It’s not until she sings does Eric actually come to and open his eyes.

There are several other reasons why I think it’s highly unlikely Ariel used her Heart Song (despite it just not making any sense). For one, Ariel clearly had no idea her interest in Eric was reciprocated when she came to land. She did not know he was out searching for her. And two, when Eric does run into the room and sees her for the first time, he is obviously disappointed because he thinks she’s just some stranger. He’s not “senselessly in love” as a Heart Song would lead him to be.

So I believe Ariel used her Heal Song to revive Eric from drowning, meanwhile Ursula tried to use a Heart Song to brainwash him into being in love with her. Just a tidbit I found interesting.

Barberry explains, “Grafts are us two-legged plants Mother Earth grew from lil’ regular plants! She or scouts hand-pick us from the wild and nurture us into adults.” As she explains she gestures towards a tulip, which has an arrow between it and a full-sized graft that’s based on a tulip.

Barberry shrugs and says, “Once we’re grown, we’re assigned jobs! (We’re not always suited for em, tho.”

Barberry leans down and points off-panel below her. “We were originally made to better hang out with ambassadors. Check out our features-”

In the space below that panel stands fern, hands on her hips and looking annoyed. She says, “Why are you picking on me.” There are arrows next to her that are labeled to highlight the said ‘features’ of grafts. They read “Can speak any human language!”, “Don’t need to breathe or eat, just sun and good drink!”, and in quotations, “humanoid”.

The last panel below has Barberry looking dismayed. “Next time: more on all our FUN jobs! Oh boy!”

One thing to be said for Shar; I love the fact that the ancient primordial horror has leaned into her eldritch nature. She's creepy and horrifying, and that's very sexy of her. Loving the nightmarish tentacles of pure darkness with eyes, lady.

Meanwhile the other primordial being from the dawn of time made of moonlight spends her spare time in the form of a middle aged lady running an inn in Waterdeep and runs therapy for cursed shapeshifters. Which is also a delightful idea for an ancient eldritch being.

i was working on a little kinda hybrid work/crossover-but-not-really between rain world and warrior cats and i thought about using some of your clan culture stuff and reworking it to fit in with the universe better, but i was wondering if you've ever actually played rain world yourself?

I had heard the name but knew nothing about the game. I actually thought it was another name for Rimworld the whole time!

(It's a survival game about an alien slug cat in a post-apocalyptic world, for those who don't know)

Anyway, nope, never played! My favorite games are usually older or have a sandbox element. Spore, Minecraft, Amazing Island. Sometimes I play a monster collection game like Temtem, or a strategy one like Fire Emblem. Rune Factory 4 is my favorite game of all time, I actually like farming when there's combat involved lmao.

My taste in video games is super eclectic. But no it doesn't usually involve survival platformers like Rain World.

I'm in a sort of headspace and preference to where I dont like just putting my docs out in the open, and would rather share it with specific people only- solely because the lore bibble is so heavily under my hcs/feels kinda personal in a number of places and just throwing it out there for all kinda scares me. 5. Did either of them try to resist their feelings? Oh for sure! Moreso Rex than me, surprisingly. I accepted it pretty quickly considering my Jedi status, I just always thought that rule was bullshit and my best friend is Anakin so I knew I wasn’t the only one either. x’D Rex on the other hand tried his hardest not to even recognize that he had feelings, cause he knew it would make things harder on him, and when he did finally accept it he kept insisting to himself that I wouldn’t (shouldn’t) jeopardize my status for him, and that it could never be.

6. If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think? I always believed that things happen for a reason, so obviously I met him so we could fall in love and have each other even when we had nothing else, I’d believe it. Rex would be skeptical (at first), because he’s not always so sure there’s a reason for things, especially when awful things happen. But after some thinking he’d realize that soulmates are made, not found, and he’d realize that he had his. <3

2. Did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like? Unfortunately we weren’t able to really date when we first got together, it was mostly private meetups and staying indoors and mostly out of sight, but after the war I think it’d be sweet if we tried to make up for it! Maybe I’d just like, express that we never really had a first date (lightheartedly, ofc) and Rex would scrounge up whatever we had and surprise me with a romantic dinner just on our ship because he’s wonderful that way! <3

2. What's the wedding like? Who attends? Hehe, it’s gotta be real small and not many people attend. Hardly any, in fact. We may be free to be together in the way that we always wanted but we are still fugitives under the Empire, so the guest list is kinda small djghks. For sure Ahsoka, and maybe the Bad Batchers if they can make it, but honestly we don’t need much more of that as long as we carry the memories of all of our other friends. :’3

3. How many kids do they have, if any? What are they like? I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!! TURN IT UP!! Ok honestly I would need a whole post on it’s own (and I’m working on it! I wanna draw the kiddos to be able to talk about them) but first of all I would have as many kids as Rex wanted and that’s a fact. We end up having five, though!
