are you fluent on japanese? that's cool
Alas, I’m not fluent at all! I have a degree in Japanese and studied translation in college, and I did some translation work for an American manga publisher for a while. But when they say “use it or lose it” they really mean it. Around the time I graduated I was preparing for the JLPT level 2 (which I never actually took,) and now I’m functionally at a JLPT level 4. Japanese Language Proficiency Test levels are 1-5, with 1 being the highest level. So in short: I suck.
However my reading ability has always been much higher than my spoken ability, and I read manga and some novels in Japanese (with help from Jim Breen and a collection of dictionaries.)
Whenever I give a dishonorable mention, it’s because the translators REALLY screwed up, to a point that even my degraded Japanese skills can catch it. If it’s borderline, or if I’m not confident in my own ability to translate it better, I tend to not mention it.

My thoughts after doing a few TOCFL practice tests:
- I really really need to practice reading for the gist and not getting hung up on unknown words. I'm sure the whole point of throwing in phrases and characters that weren't on the word list is to weed out test takers who can't manage to pick up on overall context. Unfortunately I am used to looking up every damn thing when reading for leisure. So I've selected a library book of a suitable level to force myself to read without pausing- the first attempt went alright except when I cracked and had to look up 櫺 líng because it was such a good shape, it means latticework on a window. - Unsurprisingly, I'm not that great at questions on unfamiliar topics for which I don't know the vocab (because they're of no interest to me and I never bothered to learn it). I understand the logic of testing people who might be getting this certificate for work on topics that might happen on the job. But why can't we slide in some of my special interests I've listened to hours of podcast on, huh? (I decided to find a tv series to watch in order to diversify.) - The most troublesome part of "Mandarin proficiency test" is not so much my Mandarin proficiency as the "test" part. In the listening section I often understand perfectly what 小美's mother asked her to do to prepare for the guests in the afternoon, or the long list of critical steps in booking a ticket for XYZ. Hell if I remember the details by the time the multiple choice question rolls around. I need to practice taking notes, and also remembering to actually look at the choices on the answer sheet beforehand. - Sometimes I am thinking of the correct answer, and somehow write down a totally different one?? - I start out with some confidence and energy and then deflate (or panic) somewhere around question 30. I've timed myself on the reading and done the listening without any pause or repeat to try and simulate authentic levels of anxiety (success, unfortunately), and when I do them both together it's exhausting. I don't know if it's late in the game to try and build stamina, but I might as well try. - Sometimes I get things wrong not because I misunderstood the material but because I had my own interpretation of what exactly the question was asking, which I don't think I can do much about. - When I second guess myself and write down a row of potential answers, the first one is almost always correct. - My language school teachers definitely lifted some of their final exam questions directly from these.
I asked a Japanese acquaintance today how the test was when she'd taken it and she said she passed B2 (TOCFL 4) a year ago, so I ought to be fine because her level is currently slightly below mine, but Japanese native speakers have a significant edge on the reading so this isn't entirely reassuring. On the bright side, nothing too serious is riding on this at the moment, at worst I disappoint myself terribly and just take it again later. But success would be nice! I really hope the practice tests are of similar or higher difficulty to the actual exam, not significantly easier.

I'm a week late lol but I have updates!!
- Started taking HSKK (Chinese Speaking Proficiency Test) advanced prep class :D We're all advanced learners in here with HSK 5/6 levels so the teacher is speaking in Chinese the whole time and I'm so happy that I can understand 99% of what she's saying but also I found out my Chinese speaking has really diminished 😭 Thank god I was able to introduce myself and answer her questions in Chinese but the mock tests are kicking my ass no doubt.
- J.Test (Japanese language exam) released the correct answers and I got enough marks to pass JLPT N3 level!! I'm still waiting for formal result announcements but I'm pretty sure I got it!! :D
- Started teaching a new basic Chinese class so now I have to teach 4 days per week. It's a bit tough but I think I'm making it work?
- the level 1 Chinese class I'm teaching is going to end in February so I'm gonna have to prep for the level 2 class and THEN prep and record my basic Korean classes. I'll tell y'all how it goes
- I have 100% grade but still missing classes for Pali Diploma and will have to make up a lot in the future. Thank god they don't grade attendances 😭
- I have a slight fever right now so I'm chugging Lipovitan-D to keep me going. I have a tarot session booked this afternon and a chinese class to teach so can't really rest Unfortunately :/ but Dimension 20 FHJY is helping me with my mood.
Anyways that's all! happy studying, y'all

JLPT N4 Grammar & Kanji Checklist
5/15/22 UPDATE
N4 Kanji & Grammar Checklist also available in the shop. Follow the link to check it out. This list consists of 202 must-know kanji, as well as 70+ grammar points. The kanji of each checklist are categorized for easier learning, with their onyomi and kunyomi included. As usual, these lists are not exhaustive because the JLPT is always subject to change.
★ While the JLPT is cumulative, these lists are NOT cumulative and/or exhaustive. That's almost an impossible feat for these list to be exhaustive when I do not have access to the test makers. These lists are compiled after researching current trends in what has previously been on the exams, practice exams, textbooks, etc. As these lists are not cumulative, if you're interested in what's on the N5 Kanji & Grammar Checklist, please purchase that as well.
N3-N1 are coming soon.

Sadly, didn’t get to finish all the remaining sketch requests by October, but still wanted to show WIPs just to show I had worked on them during the deadline. I humbly ask (and apologize) to these people for more patience as I want to use November to study for my Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) that I’m taking in early Dec. Who knows, I may be able to work/finish some before then. Note: The final pieces may change and/or be completely different from what you see here. These are all pieces I haven’t finished due to pending decisions and/or may redo. ~ 1. Judge Sans from (before Saving Three Ex-Cell-ent Skeletons takes place) requested by @recklesslycaffeinated
2. Mutt (may change back to @recklesslycaffeinated Mafiafell Papyrus version later) requested by the inspiring anon. Thank you again!
3. FellswapX Sans (Gin) requested by @chatxkilluaxnoir and made by @xxtha-blog  My requests were supposed to be Gin-centric but I had to add Toriel in for the narrative I wanted to give this piece.
4. Underfell Sans (Red) requested by Anon. Requested for the winner of the Undertale AU Twitter Sexyman Poll
5. UT Papyrus requested by @monomori3  Actually, this request asked to see if LGBTQ could be done. This WIP is more of a placeholder as I’m still trying to figure out how to incorporate that. No promises, but even if it’s not, I’m making a better Papyrus drawing. Don’t worry! 6. Ugh, horrendous rushed sketch/line work for now. Centipede Sans (regular Sans?) requested by @llamagoddessofficial I thought to challenge myself as a happy one for once instead of dark and scary.

ventique how long have u been practicing and learning japanese?
I started since I had JP classes while taking my first degree, but that was a ways back (2018). I'm N2 level in kanji recognition, but I haven't been brushing up on my conversational skills so I wouldn't call myself good.
Japanese Language Proficiency Tests count backwards, with N5 being the most basic and N1 the highest. I hope to practice more this year to at least get N3 certified though!
Sorry for the long answer, haha. I'm pretty passionate about language learning, although I don't have much time and energy to consistently learn so I can be embarrassingly slow in progressing. 🗿

I saw this TikTok the other day that was like, "what would your life look like if you did not care about furthering yourself, optimizing yourself, improving yourself..."
And I was thinking about that and language learning. And I think... I would probably study a lot more languages to lower levels, even though I know that can seem superficial. I do find a lot of joy in dabbling and finding new movies and music, and learning just enough to communicate and understand things even if poorly, but I don't allow myself to do that most of the time. I think there's definitely a perfectionist streak when it comes to me learning Japanese at times because, yno, I see the kind of academic inspiration porn of people extremely fluent in languages, putting hours and hours into studying, passing all these proficiency tests and getting into top schools and jobs, and I feel like I want that to be me so I optimize how I study. But do I really want that? Does that really benefit me? Or does it just make me feel like my language skills are never enough no matter how much time I put in?

20/100 days of productivity.
It's actually less busy than I thought it would be today. Classes have been pretty chill, and a couple of my teachers got sick, so there's not much to do. But I finished my college apps, so now it's just interview prep for Saturday. I am...very nervous, especially because the school is quite literally the best for my major.
(Ice in that water looking CRISP.)
Today’s productivity:
Did AP Physics practice FRQs to prepare for unit test on drag and motion, luckily the test got postponed to next Monday.
Did AP Statistics review questions on experimental design, not too bad.
Did US Government notes, long and boring.
Worked on website for my club, we're using Jekyll to create all of the pages. Now I can add Ruby to the list of languages I am "moderately proficient" in!
Spent an hour flashcarding for Japanese 4 new chapter vocab
Self Care:
Daylight savings meant that I got to sleep in an extra hour. That was fun.
Spent a good hour playing Monster Hunter Rise, and getting blown out by the Variant Malzeno.
Future Goals:
Study for 3 tests in the coming weeks; AP Statistics (Experimental Design), AP Computer Science (String manipulation), and AP Physics (Friction and Drag)
Figure out how I'm going to read The Jungle without spending money (read: One Piece-ing)
Keep preparing for college interview (僕はスペインにいる。スは静かだ。)
Song of the day:
Name: Pyro
Album: UNLOCKED
Artists: Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats
