Favorite California history books? Any interesting books on California governors?

First of all, anything by Kevin Starr is a good place to start if you're looking for books on California history. I particularly recommend California: A History (BOOK | KINDLE) for an overall history and Coast of Dreams: California on the Edge, 1990-2003 for a more modern perspective.

Jim Newton's book Man of Tomorrow: The Relentless Life of Jerry Brown (BOOK | KINDLE) is probably the best biography I've read about one of California's most influential Governors. Lou Cannon's Governor Reagan: His Rise to Power (BOOK | KINDLE) is an excellent look at the future President's early political career and eight years in Sacramento.

Mark Arax has written some really insightful books about California's history, culture, and politics, especially West of the West: Dreamers, Believers, Builders, and Killers in the Golden State (BOOK | KINDLE), and The Dreamt Land: Chasing Water and Dust Across California (BOOK | KINDLE).

While they aren't solely about California, I'd also suggest these books, which help tell some of the more important aspects of the story of California: Kearny's March: The Epic Creation of the American West, 1846-1847 (BOOK | KINDLE) by Winston Groom; The Crusades of Cesar Chavez: A Biography (BOOK | KINDLE) by Miriam Pawel; and, Cesar Chavez: Autobiography of La Causa (BOOK | KINDLE) by Jacques E. Levy.

There's another question in my inbox asking for book suggestions about Sacramento, so I'll include those in this answer. Sacramento: An Illustrated History, 1839-1874: From Sutter's Fort to Capital City by Thor Severson is an older book, but really solid about Sacramento's early history. Fool's Gold: A Biography of John Sutter by Richard Dillon, John Sutter: A Life on the North American Frontier by Albert L. Hurtado, and The Associates: Four Capitalists Who Created California (BOOK | KINDLE) by Richard Rayner are good biographies about some of the most important founders of Sacramento.

And you can't tell the story of Sacramento or California (or, really, the United States) without the construction of the transcontinental railroad, so I'd also highly recommend Nothing Like It in the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad, 1863-1869 (BOOK | KINDLE) by Stephen Ambrose, and Empire Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad (BOOK | KINDLE) by David Haward Bain.

I don’t know if Auston attends many weddings tbh, he seems pretty quiet every off season. He only hangs out with his family and his Arizona friends in the summer. I only remember seeing him at the Kadri wedding (like 2017-18?) and one pic of him at a wedding in the summer 2019 his friend posted and that’s it. That’s a low number considering how many friends he has in the league/hockey world

And that right there makes me wonder about Leafs culture yet again. Yes they all love and respect each other but they're quite silo'd from each other eh?

Like ok let's use the best example possible: matthew tkachuk. Dude shows up to Florida and immediately takes out the trainers for a meal and barky like ohhh helllsss yea this dude gets it. He gets team vibes. That's how they pushed n pulled each other to the SCF. That's how Calgary made anything happen despite the cruelty of sutter littered all about.

Another example on a smaller scale-- willy hosting away game dinners for the Swedes. Those blond bitches are BONDED. Looking out for each other on the ice. Crying and weeping and cradling and walking each other out of arenas after getting traded mid practice

I'd rather have willy or mitchy as captain over jt or aus. I think u plop that level of responsibility at his feet mitchy would be like omg Steph babe pls setup team events for me?? U make cocktails right? Just booze us all up and take us ax throwing or whatever. And he'd worry his cute ass off about his little creatures

That boy looks chill but he is dedicated and focused on every task and he would whip up a Google shared spreadsheet and calendar with his little round wire specs on and get everyone on the same page. And then he'd show up last to every one of his events ofc but dw its all setup by vendors & ready to go

I’m a couple of hours into “Red Dead Redemption 2”. Honestly, if this game were set in modern day, it’d be the “Sons of Anarchy” game adaptation that was never made. Instead of horses, it’s motorcycles.

I’m sensing a lot of Clay Morrow-Dutch Van der Linde parallels. Also, John and Abigail being Jax and Tara (although John actually followed through on his attempt to leave the “life” based on the 1st game). Arthur, to me, is like if Chibs was the main character.

ok here are my five faves :) in no particular order:

Plano: Some Town Halfway In Between - While John is hiding from the law, his youngest son experiences disturbing visions (Dean/John from Sam POV). A horror fic that was also a super fun experiment with first person. I like a challenge!

December, Sutter County - Dean celebrates New Year 2002 with a woman from the bar in his bed, but his mind is elsewhere (Stanford-era Dean character study). I'm proud of the writing craft and use of setting in this one. Road trip fic, or anti-road trip fic?

Baton Rouge - Sam and Dean drive into the heart of a storm (post-15x19 first time Wincest). Probably my top fave if I had to choose, in no small part thanks to a certain wonderful beta... I'm a sucker for late-canon first time, and for hot handies in the bathroom when the power's out :)

Understand the Undernetting - The summer Dean was fourteen he fell in love with the hooker next door and learned monsters come in many forms (Weechesters gen or pre-slash). Probably not the kind of fic I'd write any more, but I'm glad I did. It was fun to weave an OC into the young boys' insular lives and poke at their blurred boundaries.

Time to Look at One Another - Dean comes to see Sam in Our Town. He has some thoughts about the play's depiction of love, life, and death (Teenchesters gen, Sam POV). My first published spn fic. A little sweet, a little wistful.
