My Father's House by Joseph O'Connor is a historical fiction about a Vatician City priest who helps to set up an 'escape line' out of Nazi Italy and prisoner-of-war camps and saved countless lives. It's a thriller about a big mission organized by Monsignore Hugh O'Flaherty and orchestrated by a group of people who have come together to resist the fascists. The book is inspired by real primary sources.

It was a little longer than it needed to be, and especially near the beginning of the book, O'Connor's rich prose could get in the way a little bit—but once I settled in, it became a fast read. It's an extraordinary story and the characters are complex and richly built. O'Connor did a fantastic job building up the character of the Monsignor and why people would follow him into such a dangerous mission.

There are always plenty of storylines surrounding the Penguins each year at training camp. One that has flown under the radar to those on the outside, but has been discussed inside the locker room, is who’s going to replace Brian Dumoulin as team DJ.

“We’ve been talking about that!” Drew O’Connor said. “It’s a job nobody really wants, because it’s a lot of pressure. It’s a thankless job. Dumo was really good.”

Right now, it sounds like defensemen P.O Joseph and Marcus Pettersson are the top-two candidates for the role that Dumoulin had filled since 2016. The person is responsible for what music comes out of the locker room speakers ahead of practices, morning skates and games to get the group in the right state of mind.

Pettersson found himself in the mix because he’s a good singer, having gotten up in front of the boys to sing karaoke a couple of times.

When fellow Swede Patric Hornqvist was with the Penguins, the guys and their significant others dressed as Abba one Halloween, and did Dancing Queen at the team party. Pettersson then hit the stage solo another time, belting out Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody for the group.

But performing and DJ’ing are two different things, which is why Pettersson thinks Joseph is a better fit.

“He knows what’s hot right now in the music industry, he follows it,” Pettersson said. “I think he’d make a great team DJ. There’s a lot of pressure that comes with the DJ spot. There’s a lot of sleepless nights trying to figure it out. We’ve got to come up with somebody. I’m not throwing myself in there, I’m throwing P.O in there.”

Joseph has the captain’s vote as well, with Sidney Crosby believing he’s the right person for the job. Letang also thinks P.O would do well.

“I'll take it,” Joseph said with a laugh and a sigh. “It's just hard sometimes. I think it's the hardest thing to do around here, to be honest.”

That’s because not only does the team DJ need a variety of songs that cover everybody’s tastes, they also have to read the mood accordingly, like playing something more upbeat if guys are tired or more chill if everyone’s feeling good.

Fortunately, Joseph has said he’s such a mood person for life in general, and that includes music. He also has diverse tastes, learning to enjoy listening to country music when he was playing junior hockey in the Maritimes; loving hip hop, rap, EDM/dance music, and indie folk; and appreciating some of the good rock classics that everybody knows the lyrics to, even if they’re not his preference.

If Joseph does take over, he would ask everyone for their preferences, and go from there.

“I would try to please everyone,” he said. “I feel like there's definitely a different side of music from every guy in the room. Dumo did a pretty good job last year just kind of asking guys what their kind of music was. I heard some 80s and some 90s rock, which is not what I usually play at home. But I guess if you just bring different types of music in the room, people will just start liking it.”

The Penguins began their annual bye week on Sunday, Jan. 28, which leads into the All-Star break. That means Pittsburgh won’t return to game action until Tuesday, Feb. 6, when they host the Winnipeg Jets at PPG Paints Arena.

A number of the players shared their recommendations for books, shows, and podcasts to help pass the time over the next week-plus until hockey is back, with some adding commentary to their picks. I tried including where you can stream the shows, but if you aren’t subscribed to the service I listed, I would do some research to see if it’s accessible elsewhere. Enjoy!

Marcus Pettersson: When We Were Kings podcast; and “I go through a lot of shows. I feel like there's a lot of different ones that catch my eye, but I like more sci-fi or fantasy. Like the new Lord of the Rings show, I watched… the new Game of Thrones, I've watched… and the old Game of Thrones, all of those. I watched a show early in the summer called Silo on Apple TV+. It's a really good one.”

There’s a blackbird in Dun Laoghaire When I’m walking with my sons Through the laneways Called ‘The Metals’ By the train-tracks.

And he sings among the dandelions And bottle-tops and stones, Serenading purple ivy, Weary tree-trunks.

And I have it in my head That I can recognise his song, Pick him out, I mean distinct From all his flock-mates.

Impossible, I know. Heard one blackbird, heard them all. But there are times He whistles up a recollection.

There’s a blackbird in Dun Laoghaire – And I’m suddenly a kid, Asking where from here to Sandycove My youngest sister hid. I’m fourteen this Easter. My job to mind her. Good Friday on the pier – And I suddenly can’t find her.

The sky like a bruise By the lighthouse wall. We were playing hide-and-seek. Is she lost? Did she fall? There’s a blackbird in Dun Laoghaire And the terror’s like a wave Breaking hard on a hull, And the peoples’ faces grave

As Yeats on a banknote. Stern as the mansions Of Killiney in the distance, As the pier’s granite stanchions, And Howth is a drowned child Slumped in Dublin Bay, And my heart is a drum And the breakers gull-grey.

Private Peaceful (2012) d. Pat O’Connor

This film recounts the war-time experiences of two brothers, Thomas “Tommo” Peaceful and his older brother Charlie in the First World War. Their upbringing in rural Devon in the early 1900s is told in flashbacks and Charlie often looks out for Tommo. In this clip, Charlie ends up fighting another boy called Jimmy Parsons in the school playground after Jimmy has been bullying Tommo. The school master breaks up the fight and (literally) drags the boys back to his classroom where he canes them both.

The film is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Michael Morpurgo. Like his earlier book War Horse (1982), it presents a strong anti-war message and it helped further the campaign to pardon those soldiers who were executed for cowardice, desertion and other similar crimes.

The boys bend over a desk to present their backside for caning, and for once the audio of the cane in action is somewhat realistic. The school master holds them in place with a hand on their left shoulder, although neither looks like he’s about to make an escape attempt. Indeed, they’re both remarkably stoic throughout (although Jimmy is somewhat vocal); I used to jump as each stroke landed.

Both boys get at least four strokes although the impression is that they receive more, which seems a tad excessive for a schoolyard scrap. Only Jimmy’s caning is shown; Charlie is featured in close-up (plus there’s a chair in the way).

Jimmy is clearly not popular with the other children whereas Charlie gets a loud cheer for standing up to him.

The adult versions of Tommo and Charlie are played by George MacKay (1917) and Jack O’Connell (Skins, Tower Block, ’71). Young Charlie is played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin (yes, that Fiennes—Ralph and Joseph are his uncles). He was 14 when he filmed this. All three are still acting.

George won a BAFTA Scotland award for For Those in Peril (2013) and was also nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award. Private Peaceful marks the last on-screen appearance of Richard Griffiths before his death.
