Postcards From America
Here's a few snapshots of springbreak in St Petersburg, Florida in the good ole US of A. The sunshine was a-maze-balls for my mitochondria. Also, strange to discover one of the best known lines in the universe is being misquoted. #PostcardsFromAmerica

Okay I feel like Bobby's dad was also a pilot, and he knows a few people. And I HC that Bobby was also obsessed with space/ the Apollo landings. So his dad gets him a pass to tour the Kennedy Space Centre, and when he dates you that's one of the dates he takes you on.
yesssss! absolutely! i feel like his dad was a pilot and his mum was in STEM science, or astro physics. it’s how bobby got his love for flying and building rocket ships. hence, the incredibly accurate hc of bobby being obsessed with space and the apollo landings 🥹 alongside that, he loves constellations and astronomy, and another one of his dates with you has been stargazing! 💌

That man was never Leon’s blood father, but he was as close to one could be. Both just as stubborn, protective. Apprehensive at first, Leon found new comfort in calling this man ‘dad’, a word so foreign it spat off his tongue when he uttered it for the first time in sixteen years.
Leon first met you on the summer of ’95. You were antsy, untrusting, straight out of the orphanage. He recognised the signs - how your fingers tap restlessly against your thigh, eyes averted - you reminded him of his younger self. He didn't care if you two weren't bound by blood, instead, took it upon him to care for you like a real sibling he never had.
Sometimes, feeling beyond that with the wildfire looks exchanged through the hallways of your shared living quarters. Granted, none of those emotions will survive to daylight.
That is until your father passed away in a car accident five years later, he drew breath to his final words – “Take care of your sister, son.” Which will grow to be the latest memory Leon will remember of him.
Tumblr media
Screeches echo the entrance as Leon opens the front door, embraced by a gust of cool air, chilling to the spine, into the hallway of darkness. You expect to hear the usual rattle of cookware and a distant hum of Billy Joel, but only the mutters of toneless eulogies ring in your head.
“I’m going to my room.” You murmur. Leon doesn’t say anything as you surrender yourself to the hollow in your room.
The door shuts behind you, piercing through the silence that once filled with countless occurrences of laughter and jest. Leon observes the sofa in the living space, one that he often finds his dad sitting on to watch a game. He picks up the throw, relieved to smell lingers of his dad's scent on them.
Maybe you'll appreciate it. He picks it up, folding the corners neatly together, as if the gesture alone can preserve the scent within. He grabs a box of tissues too, you’ll probably need it.
“Hey.” Leon knocks on your door.
“Go away.” You sniffle.
“I’ve brought you something.” You didn’t say anything, which is a signal, as he had learnt through the years, for him to come in.
Leon finds your figure sitting at the edge of the bed, a photograph of the three of them burying into your face, the tears dripping along the metallic frame onto your black pencil skirt, one you haven’t worn since your first job interview.
“How are you doing?” Leon positions himself right next to you, one hand extending the tissue box slightly to you.
You appreciate the gesture, instantly snatching a few strips to wipe the tears on your face and blow your nose deeply into the tissue.
“I… I already miss him, Leon.” You choke through the words, feeling another sting in your eye. The throw is draped in front of you, and you can't stop remembering how much your father means to you.
Leon almost didn’t know what to say. “Me too.”
“I don't want to be alone again.” Another sniffle threaten to escape.
“You won't. You still have me.” In an effort to comfort you, he slides his hand on your back, rubbing small circles at your centre.
Your hands fly underneath his arms, tears drenching over his tailored black suit, one that snugs around his figure. Leon hasn’t cried once ever since the orphanage, but today, he almost did. He runs his hand into weaves of your hair, massaging your scalp slightly as he pulls you closer into his embrace.
A sigh left your throat, almost a bit content. Pleasured. Leon catches your breath on his shirt, and his breath hitches ever so slightly. Leon parts with your embrace just a tad, just enough until your eyes meet. The smell of your childhood bedroom runs into his nose like juicy steak dangling right in front of his lion’s claw – he was so close to have it all.
“I’m sorry…” Leon cups your face, tilting his closer to you.
He runs his lips to yours, breaking the spell that has been keeping him away this entire time. Your lips twitch in resistance for a brief second, before losing control into the softness of his lips. Gently, he pushes you down till your frame meets the soft mattress as he plants his palms on each side of your face.
“We don’t have to do this…” His lids are hooded, cautious words contradicting the burning desire hiding behind the hardness pressing onto you. Leon tries to pull away from you out of conscience, but it has become impossible looking at how obedient you are underneath him.
“I can't say I don't want this...” Your hands come up to feel the mole next to his adam's apple. “You've always been more than just a brother to me.”
Leon kisses you on the forehead, this time with endearment. “I’ll be gentle, don’t worry.”
You nod, stifling a chuckle between your covered mouth. The kisses grow hungrier, more erratic. His hands start running down the zip on your skirt, pulling it down just slightly. Leon's fingers slither into your underwear, grazing lightly against the tiny bud that pulses slightly upon touch. A moan gasps at the back of your throat as he circles it gently, feeling you throb through your clit. Your thighs jolt together for a second, then relaxes, widening your stance for easier access. Leon runs a hand along your slit, collecting the juices onto the pad of his finger, bringing it up to his lips for a taste of that nectar.
“God, I didn’t know my sister is so spoiled.” He whistles, pulling your legs up his shoulders, basking in the wetness between your thighs.
Leon preps his cleaned fingers for another entry. With a skilled movement, he presses his thumb against your clit, index finger teasing at your entrance as he feels around your folds.
Your breath hitches at the impact, composure falling apart and melting into a puddle of your own pleasure. Leon parts his lips and land them right in front of your bud, exchanging places with his fingers. He breathes onto it lightly, triggering a tickle sensation that lets out a giggle in you before he takes in all of it in his mouth. Suckling on them. His fingers resume, moving in between your folds, thrusting his digits into you.
Your moans turn into a strangled pant, crying his name out loud, chasing the high that he instils into you. Leon watches you through the whole thing. When he sees your movement starts uncontrollable twitch, he releases your bub with a wet pop.
He moves his face lower, putting his tongue inside of you, thrusting and licking your sweet juices until you almost unravel on his tongue. Before he suddenly takes his tongue off you, his finger still pressing firmly in your pulsing clit. You whined out, clenching to nothing.
“L-Leon… Let me c-come…”
“Wait for me, baby. I want us to come together.” He kisses your inner thigh to as if to apologise before Leon removes his shirt revealing his chiselled body. He gets his pants undone and let it fall onto his knees. He wrings out of them awkwardly, tossing to the side of the bed.
You see his cock for the first time, looming in front of you. The crest of his cock slightly bulged in pink, tip drooling to enter you.
“Be a good girl for me and lift your legs up for me, won't you?” Leon curls his hand around his cock, fisting it a few times. You can't take your eyes off him as you lift your bottom upwards. He nods in gratitude as he hooks your knees across his shoulders, pressing you down so slightly until your knees almost touch your jaw.
You squirm involuntarily, a light gasp left your mouth as he lines himself up against you. You buck your hips closer, getting impatient. His breath turns heavy before thrusting himself into you.
You use this opportunity to lock his waist with your ankles, securing him just enough for his movements to become strained. The curse that left Leon’s mouth was almost carnal. He buries himself into you, elbows losing balance for a second and falls onto the mattress before he picks himself back up. Your thighs start to quiver under him, a welling of emotions chasing the high of your euphoria. His dick twitches, groans turning into desperate whimpers. He pulls himself out of you, shooting strings of white onto your sheets as he pants in relief.
“Where did you learn how to do all that?” Leon rolls right next to you, asking with a heaved breath.
“You know I’m already twenty-four, right?” You chuckle. “I’ve had some experience.”
“You’re already twenty-four?” He releases a heavy breath, mentally counting the years. “I would’ve graduated high school seven years ago… Man, I'm getting old.”
“Shut up, you’re just a year older than me.” You run your fingers to the soft of his waist, tickling him in the spot you know he’s sensitive to.
Leon guards his sides defensively, hands held in yours to stop you. You chuckle at his reaction, but he holds your hand firmly this time. His eyelids hood the cerulean of his eyes, gaze fixed upon you like wildfire meets turbulent waves.
“I’ll take care of you. Whatever it takes. Always.”
Leon’s hand grip onto yours, a bit firmer. You let a grin tug your cheek, and lunge to hug him.
He intends to keep every bit of this promise.

The Challenge was a series III episode of Yes Minister (1982), in which Jim Hacker’s Department of Administrative Affairs assumes general oversight of local authorities. As Ludovic Kennedy (playing himself as BBC interviewer) points out, Hacker is now ‘Mr Townhall as well as Mr Whitehall’.
Echoing the Thatcher government’s zeal to reform the local government sector, Hacker is determined to make councils more efficient and to curb their extravagance. The Cabinet Secretary and Sir Humphrey are not so keen, worried that any reforms, such as direct financial accountability for the success or failure of council projects, could be extended to the civil service as a whole.
To deflect his attention, Jim Hacker is urged to tackle the largely ridiculed and tricky business of civil defence, in particular the provision of public fall-out shelters by local authorities, and is sent to confront the leader of the London Borough of Thames Marsh, Ben Stanley, over their anti-nuclear activism and budget blowouts. Stanley was reportedly based on Ken Livingstone, leader of the ill-fated Greater London Council.
There are a couple of interesting cameos, aside from Ludovic Kennedy, and Moray Watson as a BBC controller. Ian Lavender (Private Pike from Dad’s Army) plays Dr Cartwright, a departmental economics boffin doomed to spend his entire career as a middling undersecretary. “I fear I shall rise no higher,” he explained sadly to Jim Hacker, “Alas, I’m an expert.”
Ben Stanley, the unilateralist leader of Thames Marsh Council is played by Doug Fisher (Man About the House), and is unimpressed by Cartwright’s suggestions on how to save ratepayers' money, which include closing the feminist drama centre, abandoning plans for a leisure centre featuring an artificial ski slope and jacuzzi, closing the gay bereavement centre, selling the Mayor’s second Daimler, and cancelling a councillors’ fact-finding junket to the Caribbean.
The episode lampoons the council’s hypocrisy in taking an anti-nuclear stance while providing fall-out shelter space solely for the leader and some senior councillors. Paul Eddington himself (Jim Hacker) was a Quaker pacifist, and in a later interview recalled that he was very uncomfortable with the way the writers (Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn) had ridiculed the anti-nuclear issue and peace activism, and that they had allowed their own political bias to influence the story. Eddington objected, and some moderating changes were made to the final script.

The Supremes
They were not only the most commercially successful female group of the '60s but among the top 5 pop/rock/soul acts of that decade. Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard had a mature, glamorous demeanor that appealed equally to teens and adults. Beautiful, musically versatile, and unique, the original Supremes were America's sweethearts.

Edie Sedgwick
The original 'it girl' inspired Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol, and was the toast of the New York art scene with her bouffant blonde hair, vintage chandelier earrings and by wearing nothing but a leotard and tights.
Tumblr media
The Designers
London's fashion sector existed until the 1960s in the shadow of the renowned Parisian couturiers. Paris served as the centre of global fashion, specialising in tailored clothing for a fantastically wealthy, elite group of women. But all of a sudden, as the youth market expanded, London started to lead the pace.
Thanks to a handful of up-and-coming young designers trained in the couture tradition, Paris has maintained its edge. Fashion firms like Saint Laurent, Cardin, and Courrèges discovered how to appeal to younger customers. They established ready-to-wear shops and concessions in department stores and produced "space age" clothing that was quickly imitated on the high street.
Tumblr media
The youth market was enormous in the US, and department stores made millions by importing London fashions. But retailers also recognised the boutique's potential. Local stores that catered to affluent customers by selling unique, cutting-edge designs thrived, notably in New York.
Tumblr media
Andrè Courrèges
André Courrèges
The French designer is best known for introducing the revolutionary space look- featuring white boots, goggles and boxy dresses designed in futuristic metallic shades, high shine fabrics such as PVC. His look was a blend of avant-garde geometry with sports classic driven by the youth culture.
Tumblr media
Pierre Cardin
Became famous for his brightly colored mini dresses. At the time his garments were "avant-garde" he like other designers at the time was heavily influenced by “Age" movement. His design style is mainly geometric shapes and colours.
Tumblr media
Paco Rabanne
The Spanish born designer made a name for himself in the 1960s with his space-age inspired fashions. He used materials such as metal, aluminum, plastic, plexi glass and even fiber optics. He was the first fashion designer to use black models in a catwalk show. As a result, he was almost thrown out of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, the governing body of Parisienne fashion.
Tumblr media
Givenchy
Responsible for the iconic little black dress that is essential to every woman's wardrobe and dressing the most elegant ladies of the time such as Audrey Hepburn, U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco; Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor and socialite Babe Paley.
Tumblr media
Yves Saint Laurent
Shift dresses and pea coats became YSL trademark styles. In 1965, colour blocking made its entrance in the world of fashion, when Yves Saint-Laurent introduced the colour block dress, inspired by the works of the famous painter, Piet Mondria.
Tumblr media
Emilio Pucci
Is best known for colorful psychedelic prints, especially for headscarves and dresses. In 1962 the world lost screen siren Marilyn Monroe. It's believed that she was buried in one of his dresses. Monroe was a huge fan of his work which can be clarified by the volume of Pucci garments in her personal collection displayed at Christies in 1999 prior to auction. Although an already established designer, Pucci saw an increase in sales in the sixties which he attributed to Miss Monroe and her popularity.
Tumblr media
The Birth of the Hippie
(1960-70s)
Originally used to designate beatniks who had settled in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, the word hipple is derived from the hipster. The hippies sought for alternate lifestyles. The majority of hippies cherished independence, nature, closeness, peace, generosity, and spirituality.
Tumblr media
Nudity was another expression of freedom that hippies used to set themselves apart from society's norms. They frequently stayed in parks or set up camp in the woods, discarding their belongings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All throughout, people wore tight-fitting bell-bottom jeans, preferably with flower patches and ankle fringe, T-shirts, or just a skimpy halter top. All of the peasant blouses complemented jeans. Anything handcrafted was considered an accessory, and many of them had peace symbols. Popular shirts and dresses had floral prints that stood for peace and love.
In general, people dressed in a way that they believed represented who they were as individuals and not only to follow the rules of fashion. For instance, both sexes wore their hair longer and it had an unruly, uncared-for appearance. This was in response to the mid-60s girl in the miniskirt who had neat, short hair.
Tumblr media
Woodstock 1969
At Woodstock over 250,000 hippies showed up to hear artists like Janis Joplin, The Who, Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers, and County Joe and the Fish. Woodstock was not just a music concert. It was a "profound religious experience."
Tumblr media
vintag.es. (2015). 40 Rare and Incredible Color Photographs That Capture Scenes of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair in August 1969. [Online]. www.vintag.es. Last Updated: 7 February 2015. Available at: https://www.vintag.es/2015/02/40-rare-and-unseen-color-photos-of.html [Accessed 3 january 2023].
The controversy of drugs
The most popular music of the time was psychedelic rock. Many of concerts were places for lippies to protest, socialise, dance, or take drugs. Drugs like marijuana and LSD were a big art of the hippy/counterculture movement. Using drugs made hippies feel like the were belling from mainstream society.

BREAKING NEWS
SUPERMAN DEAD: NIGHT OF TERROR MORNING OF LOSS
By Lois Lane, Senior Staff Writer
PUBLISHED: 00.00, 14th November 2015 | UPDATED: 11.12, 14th November 2015
Tumblr media
TRIBUTE TO SUPERMAN: Not since the death of Kennedy has the nation so collectively mourned. © The Daily Planet: James Olsen, Photographer.
Truth, Justice and the American way. That's what he stood for. It only took his tragic death for people to realise that. Superman has been a subject of controversy ever since his arrival to Metropolis. People died that day and in order for the world to move on, the blame had to be pushed onto someone. Us Metropolitans pushed the fault where it belonged, onto the now deceased General Zod. This is because we witnessed Superman's heroics firsthand. We even erected a monument to remember those lost with him at the centre.
Recently, the world's faith in Superman has wavered. This was due to controversial incident with the overseas gang of terrorists in Nairomi, Africa. An incident now known to be orchestrated by Metropolis Billionaire, Lex Luthor. Luthor preyed on the public's doubt of Superman. He exploited the weaknesses of two of our country's greatest heroes. Both Batman and Superman, Luthor wanted them to come to blows. He also orchestrated the attack on Capitol Hill, killing multiple Senators and civilians, including Senator June Finch. The incident led the world to believe Superman was a conspirator in this attack and caused him to become a recluse, this sealed the public's mistrust in Superman.
Lex also managed to slither his way into the crashed Kryptonian Scout Ship, where he created the creature known as Doomsday. STAR Labs conducted tests on the body and found General Zod's DNA and traces of Luthor's blood. He manipulated two of our country's greatest champions to hate one another. He wanted Superman to kill The Dark Knight to prove to the world he was not the hero the world thought. Luthor also planned my kidnapping from the lobby of The Daily Planet, confessing to me he was behind the attacks after I was brought to the LexCorp Tower. I was pushed off the tower, falling thousands of feet to my death before I was saved by Superman. Just as Luthor expected, I was safely placed on Tilton Avenue before Superman flew to the top of LexCorp to confront Luthor.
Lex must have had major leverage on Superman, because not more than five minutes later, he flew across the bay to Gotham City. Lex assumed it was because Superman was going to murder Batman. But we all know Superman was never a murderer and never would be. Still, it was too late. Batman was harbouring intense anger towards the Man of Steel, believing him to be the cause of the Black Zero Event which claimed over 5,000 lives. Batman had been in the shadows, fighting crime for decades. All that buildup of fury from fighting crime had made him blind to the truth, Luthor had orchestrated his plan perfectly.
A battle between them ensued throughout the abandoned warehouse district of Gotham. I was unaware at the time, my partner Clark Kent was in the epicentre of this battle which also led to the loss of his life. (SEE ARTICLE: DAILY PLANET REPORTER CLARK KENT KILLED REPORTING GOTHAM BATTLE) I arrived at the scene to stop Batman about to murder Superman with a spear forged from Kryptonite, a mineral that is deadly to Kryptonians. I explained that Luthor was behind everything which led to the two heroes joining forces. Angering Luthor that his plan had failed, he unleashed Doomsday, a creature made from General Zod's body and Luthor's DNA. It was released into the city of Metropolis and eventually, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman led it to Gotham. The United States Military were also scrambling to stop the creature, firing a nuclear missile into space on the orders of the President. Superman was caught in the crossfire but did not perish, neither did Doomsday.
MORE ON THIS DEVELOPING STORY IN TODAY'S EARLY EDITION... REPORTING ON THE PLANET, DAILY.

Riding the Wave of Ocean Heroes: Conservation & Sustainability
Hello lovelies ໒꒰ྀི´ ˘ ` ꒱ྀིა I hope you've been doing great since the last entry hehe. I just wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support and interaction with my weekly updates. This post will be my last (at least for a while). I really hope you've managed to pick up a thing or two from my blog. Thank you for being here, and I appreciate all of you (づ๑•ᴗ•๑)づ♡
Now, let's dive into something super cool today – marine conservation and how we can be kinder to our oceans.
Tumblr media
Did you know? Around half of the world's population lives within 100 kilometers of the coast. That's a lot of people living near the sea, right?
Coastal places by the sea are like gold mines for our planet. They help out the global economy, and they do some pretty amazing stuff, like storing carbon (which is great for the environment), protecting our shores, and providing us with yummy food (Mcleod et al. 2011; Barbier et al. 2011).
You see, more than 775 million people really rely on the sea and its coastal wonders (Selig et al. 2018). For example, fish is a big deal, giving about 3.2 billion people some of their protein. It's even more crucial in places where people are still developing their countries (FOA 2018). Plus, it's not just food; it's like a vitamin boost in your meal. And, tons of people make a living out of fishing and farming seafood, almost 57 million of them! (FOA 2018).
Now, when we talk about tropical spots near the sea, they're like treasure chests. There are amazing places like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses that are teeming with life, and they help out our planet in so many ways. That's why a bunch of groups and campaigns are working hard to keep these places safe and sound.
Let's focus into how people in Malaysia are doing for a sec. Here are some rock stars doing their part to save these coastal wonders:
ICRI (International Coral Reef Initiative) Malaysia: These people are all about creating safe spaces in the sea for our underwater buddies to thrive. Right now, only 1.4% of Malaysia's waters are protected. They're on a mission to change that!
The Dugong & Seagrass Conservation Project: This one's all about saving dugongs (those adorable sea cows) and the seagrass they munch on in the Bay of Brunei, Lawas, Sarawak East Malaysia. It's a big deal because these seagrasses need some protection from overfishing and other stuff that could hurt them. The locals are getting in on the action too.
Tropical Research and Conservation Centre: These ocean heroes are based in the Celebes Sea, and they're all about saving sea turtles and fixing up coral reefs that got bashed up by fish bombing practices in Malaysia. They're on a mission to keep our underwater world vibrant and healthy.
So, there you have it! These incredible peeps are working hard to make sure our oceans stay awesome. It's all about taking big steps and little steps, but together, we can keep those secret underwater gardens thriving 🌊⋆。°்⋆
Tumblr media
Author's note: One of my all-time favorite YouTube channels recently released a new video that I believe is absolutely worth your time. His videos are like compelling stories paired with stunning cinematography. In this latest video, he highlights the alarming issue of the world's coral reefs deteriorating. It's crucial to shed light on real-world issues that are overlooked.

Water-Tracking SWOT Satellite Encapsulated in Rocket Payload Fairing The international Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission is one step closer to launching so it can track water on more than 90% of Earth’s surface. The SWOT water-tracking satellite was encapsulated in its payload fairing on Dec. 8. It will now go atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in preparation for a launch targeting Dec. 15, 2022. The SWOT satellite, or the Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission, is now encapsulated in its payload fairing in preparation for launch. Technicians at the SpaceX processing facility at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California completed the operation and will soon mate the fairing to the top of a Falcon 9 rocket. The fairing protects the satellite from aerodynamic pressure and heating during ascent. After the rocket escapes Earth’s atmosphere, the fairing separates into two halves, which are jettisoned back to Earth. Once in orbit, SWOT will measure the height of water in freshwater bodies and the ocean on more than 90% of Earth’s surface. This information will provide insights into how the ocean influences climate change; how a warming world affects lakes, rivers, and reservoirs; and how communities can better prepare for disasters, such as floods. SWOT is a collaborative effort by NASA and France’s Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES) with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency. Launch is targeted for Dec. 15, 2022, at 3:46 a.m. PST from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base. SWOT is being jointly developed by NASA and CNES, with contributions from the CSA and the UK Space Agency. JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, California, leads the U.S. component of the project. For the flight system payload, NASA is providing the KaRIn instrument, a GPS science receiver, a laser retroreflector, a two-beam microwave radiometer, and NASA instrument operations. CNES is providing the Doppler Orbitography and Radioposition Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) system, the dual frequency Poseidon altimeter (developed by Thales Alenia Space), the KaRIn radio-frequency subsystem (together with Thales Alenia Space and with support from the UK Space Agency), the satellite platform, and ground control segment. CSA is providing the KaRIn high-power transmitter assembly. NASA is providing the launch vehicle and the agency’s Launch Services Program, based at Kennedy Space Center, is managing the associated launch services.

It was hard to choose our favourite destination. In a universe full of wonders, we were pretty much spoiled for choice. We marvelled at the exotic flora of the Voynichese jungles; hiked the low-gravity mountains of Gontera; swam in the freshwater oceans of Lonhoea. Our hosts were as perfect as their homes, welcoming us with open spines and tentacles, excited to show off their landmarks to new tourists who had come so far to visit them.
But the wormhole was definitely our least favourite. It was the only way of travelling to such distant galaxies, but it came at a price. Not only the millennia of technological advancement that had bought us access to its mysterious pathways, but the nausea of hurtling through space at speeds our bodies weren't designed to bear, distances our minds weren't built to comprehend.
We travelled this way, that way, forward and backwards across countless galaxies, and completely lost track of time - or it lost track of us. It dilated with the gravity of passing stars, supernovae, supermassive black holes, faltering in the presence of gods. We travelled in stasis, not ageing through the light years and decades that rolled past, and expected to arrive back to a much older Earth, moved on since our departure all of those years ago.
Instead, we found the opposite. We were due to return to the base that had first launched our shuttle into the abyss, but we found it gone, its co-ordinates occupied by bobcats and panthers instead. At first, we assumed it had been lost to time, the island reclaimed by nature after humanity's collapse, but then we realised the reverse was true. This was a world before the Kennedy Space Centre. Before Kennedy. Before mankind had even looked to sail amongst the stars.
We crashed. There was no landing strip, but the ship's computers didn't know that, and dutifully returned us to the programmed destination, totalling itself in the process. We were fine, though. In fact, we slept through the whole thing: without the computer or mission control to revive us from stasis, we had no choice. We slept through the collision, and kept on dreaming as scavengers began dissembling the wreckage, and carried us out in our cryogenic pods.
It was another century before they could revive us. At least, that's what they told us, a century on. Their technology had not been advanced enough, when they first stumbled across our craft, and it must have seemed as foreign to them as the Gonteran kite-ships were to us. They were pre-industrial revolution, pre-space race, pre-AI. But that all quickly changed.
The arrival of our craft, as a cornucopia of technology, a mine of rare metals, and an endless supply of power from our onboard generators, had supercharged their development. Within a decade, they had mastered heavier than air flight. In just one more, they managed faster than light travel. Progress was easier, with the answers laid out in front of them. It may have taken us into the past, but our ship had carried them into the future.
It was towards the end of that curve that they worked out how to bring us back to life. I was dragged coughing and spluttering into the seventeenth century, my sarcophagus was whisked away for further study, and I was taken into meetings for the same. Our universal translators, well tested by alien tongues (or, in the case of the Voynichese, the vibrating of their hind limbs), made short work of the ancient Spanish, and even managed to spell out our concepts without direct equivalents in terms they understood.
Finally, my crewmates and I were left to get our own bearings on a world that was as unfamiliar as many we had come across. It was both new and old at the same time, and we only had each other to remember where we'd come from, not to mention where we'd been. We had shared our stories with the locals here, but it was nice to reflect on those memories with each other, trading pieces of the same mosaic to fill out the whole.
"This is wild, right?" I said. "Arriving at the dawn of American colonisation. I suppose we're not allowed to change the course of history?"
"I think we already have," one of the engineers pointed out. "The Spanish Empire were already dominant in this hemisphere, but think of the technological advantages we've given them. All of this knowledge, centuries ahead of schedule... that has to have drastically altered the world as we know it."
We walked through a newly constructed airstrip. Its bays hosted a dozen ships much like our own, but resplendent in royal red and golden weld, their hulls emblazoned with the Empire's motto: Plus Ultra. That retort had taken on new meaning now. Out in the wider universe, the Pillars of Hercules felt a distant memory.
The fledgling astronauts hurried between their craft, but we caught snippets of their own conversations, their translators now working just as well as ours. A discovery to surpass Columbus, one of them was saying; stumbling across a hundred New Worlds. To surpass Copernicus, his companion replied; for it will once again establish Earth as the centre of the universe.
"Not just our world," I realised. I thought about our peaceful, simple hosts, the Gonterans and Lonhoei and Voynichese, the way they'd welcomed us with open arms. The way our ship's guns could have easily dispatched them all, if we'd been that way inclined. The way we hadn't been. "We just gave intergalactic travel to the conquistadors... and, by extension, the known universe. An empire on which a dozen suns will never set."

Metropolitans left flowers at Heroes Park. Not since the death of Kennedy has the nation so collectively mourned. © : Jimmy Olsen, The Daily Planet
MORE ON THIS STORY DEVELOPING STORY SOON.
