The Glory (2022 -
A woman lives for absolute revenge against her childhood bullies who destroyed her life.
📝A superb drama about revenge. It's just unlike anything else I have ever seen, everything is just perfectly written, directed and shot. The first two episodes are a little slow so bear with it, and it really makes you hate the people who are doing the wrong and committing abuse but boy oh boy do they get the revenge they deserve! Absolutely brilliant. This was my first Korean Drama (or KDrama as it is widely known as) and I am now going to check out more shows from there. I highly recommend this if you like a good revenge drama and good twists. It is a proper binge-worthy show.

The Unification Church (a Korea-based megacult church) provided Korean Leader Kim Il Sung with 450 billion Yen in 1991, supposedly with the intent of funding 'light industry', it was instead diverted to nuclear weapons development. Then in 2016 it was discovered by a South Korean governmental report that the church (via a proxy Japanese scrapping company) had sold NK a Golf-II class ballistic submarine with the missiles still onboard in 1994, massively boosting North Korea's missile program.

Happy birthday, Kim Il-Sung! (April 15, 1912)
Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea from 1948 until his death in 1994, Kim Il-Sung was born to a Presbyterian family in South Heian Province during the period of Japanese rule over Korea. Kim's family was active in struggle against Japanese rule, and in 1926 Kim founded the Down-With-Imperialism Union. He became interested in communism in the early 1930s, and joined the Communist Party of China in 1931, fighting as an anti-Japanese guerilla in northern China for several years. He became a leader to the Koreans involved with the CPC due to his actions in the Minsaengdan incident, an attempted purge of Koreans from the CPC in Manchuria. After the end of World War II, Kim, extremely popular for his leadership in the anti-imperialist struggle, became leader of the socialist government established in the northern half of the Korean peninsula. Under Kim's leadership, healthcare was made a human right and made available to all citizens, land was redistributed, industry was nationalized, and working hours were reduced to eight hours per day. For a considerable amount of time, prior to the destruction of a large portion of the north's infrastructure by American forces in the Korean War, the standard of living in the DPRK was much better than that in the southern Republic of Korea. After the war, Kim undertook efforts to rebuild his country, while also establishing the DPRK on the world stage and charting a middle path through the Sino-Soviet Split. Kim also established the state ideology of the DPRK as juche, a form of Marxism-Leninism applied to the material conditions of the DPRK, emphasizing self-reliance. He died of a sudden heart attack in 1994.
"Socialism is a human ideal, an inevitable course of historical development, and therefore it is perfectly clear that socialism will rise again in the end."

five songs that hit
ty @birues @coldshrugs and @impossible-rat-babies for tagging me! tagging @narrativefoiltrope @veeples @zylphiacrowley @gwaha @fooltofancy @solarisrenbeth to also share! <3
1. Liquor Store on Mars by Kelsy Karter and the Heroines: Kelsy Karter has quickly become one of my favorite musicians. I really liked her before I saw her in concert, but seeing her live and experiencing her showmanship just made me appreciate her music more. Cannot recommend enough. (I hope there’s a liquor store waiting on Mars / with cheap cigarettes you can light with the stars / cause that’s how far I have to go to see you and not say hello)
2. Hayloft II by Mother Mother: This song got me into Mother Mother, it is such a fun banger I can’t get enough of it. When I first heard it I listened to it for days just so I could get the words right to sing along. (She crucifies (she crucifies), she crucifies (she crucifies) / Hey Pop! You die! You die!)
3. Useful Lies by San Fermin: This is probably my favorite on San Fermin’s newest album. It’s so sad and sung so gently, a song about an inevitable break up. (When you’d come home, there’d be less of you each time / The rest you kept somewhere I knew would not be mine)
4. Everything by Kehlani: The lyricism in this! The lyrics themselves are great with the rhyming scheme throughout, and it’s a love song with the singer just gushing about their partner. Cute to me. (That was before me, you childish, you done with your wildin’ / Now you can be wild with me, run that mile with me, catch some flights out with me)
5. Claws by Kim Petras: I don’t know what to say about this song except it’s so vibey and dancey and just a fun bop. (Cause you dig your claws right into my heart so I won’t forget ya)

OSTs that perfectly represent the Kdrama
Through the Darkness (2022) I recently finished watching Through the Darkness a kdrama about the first criminal profiler in South Korea Kwon Il Yong. It was a slow burn of a show and I imagine that if you are from South Korea it would really hit hard. Kim Nam Gil takes the lead role as the empathetic and intuitive Kwon II Yong.
Tumblr media
Lullaby by The Nerd Connection provided the perfect accompaniment to the painstaking and painful mind hunter work of the main characters. The guitar provides a clear sense of time moving relentlessly forward, appropriate for a series which spans the years from the establishment to the acceptance and consolidation of unit as a key part of the institutional structure of the South Korean police force.
youtube
Strangers from Hell (2019) Creepy and utterly addictive, Strangers from Hell stares into the abyss and the abyss swallows us whole. I've written about the Hannibal parallels in the relationship between the two lead characters before but, just to reiterate, the sizzling chemistry between Yim Siwan and Lee Dong Wook is difficult to turn away from even in the most tense and gory moments.
Tumblr media
The Rose's Strangers is a taut, grinding rock song which perfectly embodies the claustrophobic feel of the show. The backing vocals whispered behind the agonized voice of the lead singer communicate the persistence of the devil to influence while the lyrics emphasize the sensation of being trapped, slowly asphyxiated and wholly corrupted by evil.

Our Blues (2022) Our Blues wasn't everybody's cup of tea but, this drama, highlighting the struggles and small triumphs of different members of a close knit fishing community on Jeju Island kept me hooked until the end. It, along with Secret Garden, Something in the Rain, Run On, and The Island, are the reason that Jeju will definitely be part of the itinerary for my dream trip to South Korea.
Tumblr media
With You sung by Jimin and Ha Sung Woon will forever be associated with Min Seon A's emotional journey. She loves her child deeply but cannot care for him because she is literally drowning in her sorrows. Her journey to self acceptance, recovery and healing, aided by Lee Byung Hun's character Lee Dong Seok, is determined and poignant and is perfectly reflected in the lyrics of the song, "I promise I'll never leave your love. My heart is beating 'cause of you"

chilgol church in pyongyang, north korea. the initial church was founded in 1899, and attended by kang pan-sok, a presbyterian deaconess and mother of north korean leader kim il-sung. it was destroyed during the korean war and rebuilt in 1989 in its original style. a museum dedicated to kang is located nearby.
as in the south, north korean christians are either protestant or roman catholic, a result of 18th-20th century european missionary work in the peninsula. pyongyang once housed a large christian population and was known as "korean jerusalem". however, all the old churches in the country were destroyed or appropriated by japanese/american carpet bombing campaigns during world war ii/the korean war respectively, and as the new atheist government took hold of the region afterwards.
the church today is non-denominational protestant. it's overseen by the korean christian administration, the protestant body in the country which was founded in 1946 by christians who joined the new government. it's one of three built in pyongyang in the late 1980s to showcase freedom of religion in the country. it's likely that services are offered only to pyongyangers with a christian family background.

The Revolutionary Analysis on the Non-Socialist “DPRK”
Tumblr media
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, is often promoted as “already existing socialism” by so-called “Marxist-Leninists,” however, Marxist-Leninist Maoist theorists have a different view. The guiding principle of the country, Juche, which emphasizes self-reliance and independence, is seen by Maoists as a deviation from Marxist principles of collective ownership and control of the means of production. Maoists also argue that the state's emphasis on centralization and authoritarian control, as well as its monopoly on power and control over the means of production, is counter to the ideals of socialism and indicative of state capitalism, rather than socialism. Maoists believe that the development of socialism requires a revolutionary struggle and the establishment of democratic and participatory structures, which are currently lacking in the DPRK. According to the Norwegian Maoist media group Tjen Folket, Juche has little in common with Marxism. “Juche is idealistic and has a religious character. The leadership is not working to spread revolution in the rest of the world. It has a friendly relationship with Chinese state capitalism and was strongly against the Cultural Revolution in Mao’s time.”
The August Incident, which took place in 1956, marked a turning point in the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and the Korean communist movement. The contradictions within the WPK reached a boiling point, resulting in the struggle between the left and right lines in the party. The Korean communist movement had its roots in the occupied Korean people's resistance against the expanding Japanese empire, with exiled Koreans joining the Communist Party of China. After World War II, the Soviet Union liberated the northern part of Korea while the US occupied the south, leading to the division of the country into a socialist north ruled by the WPK and a capitalist south ruled by the USA-backed Syngman Rhee.
Kim Il-Sung was elected chairman of the WPK a year before the Korean War and led a purge against the left line, which he saw as a threat. In 1956, Kim Il-Sung visited the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe with a state delegation, four months after Nikita Khrushchev’s secret speech where he broke with Stalin and Marxism-Leninism. The left line in the homeland attempted to address the right line's opportunism and revisionism, but they were outmaneuvered, purged, some even murdered. The August Incident solidified the right line's power and marked the end of the left line's influence in the WPK and the Korean communist movement. Though Maoist organizations hold a critical line on Juche and the Workers Party of Korea, some Maoists acknowledge the positive developments in the DPRK in terms of addressing social welfare concerns and advancing the rights of workers. The state's efforts to provide universal healthcare and education and its focus on economic self-sufficiency are seen as steps towards socialism. They have also provided material support the National Democratic struggle in the Philippines. Some Maoists view the DPRK as a progressive state, but not a fully socialist one.
The August Incident marked a turning point in the WPK and the Korean communist movement, solidifying the right line's power and ending the left line's influence. The views of Maoist theorists and the troubling events of the August Incident reveal that the political and economic conditions of the DPRK are complicated, but that at the root of their government’s problems is the economic isolation forced on them by the United States. While Marxist-Leninist-Maoists view the country as a progressive state, they acknowledge that it still has a way to go in terms of fully achieving socialism.

So in the first post you said chanyeol, baekhyun, and chen sang osts for kim minjae's dramas. But on the second post you only said chanyeol and baekhyun. Was that a typo?
No, not a typo :)
Baekhyun and Jongdae both sang on the Do You Like Brahms? soundtrack. And, Baekhyun and Chanyeol (with Punch) both sang on the Dr. Romantic II soundtrack. Baekhyun also has an OST for Dr. Romantic III as well. So, EXO members have actually sung OSTs for three of Minjae’s dramas.

it's time for
sh**ting stars !
Tumblr media
look at them.
i will never understand why it's censored.
welcome back to unwanted reviews <3 today we're talking about shooting stars, a series that is not well known but one of the best ones out there.
we've got our fighter oh han byul and rich hot traumatised gong tae sung, college (?) friends but working enemies transition to (obviously) lovers.
i. well-placed transition between friendship to crush to love to hatred to love again from both the sides, tbh. it was difficult to see han byul feel anything during the first few episodes but loved the way lee sung kyung brought her to life. han byul was treated as a proper working woman, who was not some miracle worker or anything, but her journey of learning and growing was explored well.
ii. all bow down before kim young dae. istg, i completely understood the hype about tae sung in the series. also, kdrama actors look better with their hair pushed back and you can't fucking change my mind. this man was the perfect example of petty but i think he redeemed himself well. his bromance with almost every male character in the show was simply *chef's kiss*
iii. side characters special shoutout they were so cute, everyone ended up together like one happy family. it's like watching your kids grow up and all marry each other. (quote: the office us). special mention to tae sung's manager bec damn that actor was a pain. manager was also pretty dumb in the beginning but he made up by helping tae sung flirt with han byul.
iv. han byul and tae sung were SO cute together. the ending scene was so wholesome and gave me sm closure on the entire series, it made me cry. also, the way she never gave a crap about his celebrity status when he kept DOING COOL THINGS AND MA'AM NEVER PAID ATTENTION i felt so bad for tae sung
v. those two side actors getting married was cute and deserves a special point.
8/10, sung kyung never fails to impress (kim bok joo????) and young dae stole my heart. it was so weird seeing lee jung shin in c4k after this but love him all the same. loved kim yoon hye's diverse roles from vincenzo to this she was absolutely amazing.
go watch shooting stars, honestly.
oh sorry, sh**ting stars. (honestly, is there something im missing? WHY IS IT CENSORED??)
8/10

Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area (Part II)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2022
Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area (Part II, 2022, South Korea)
Director: Kim Hong Sun
Writers: Ryu Yong Jae, Kim Hwan Chae & Choe Sung Jun
Mini-review:
I feel like I was one of the few people that really enjoyed Part I and actually preferred it to the original. I hated the writing in the original show (I am a native Spanish speaker) and couldn't make it past the first few episodes, even though I found the story interesting. Now, thanks to this Korean remake, at least I can see how said story develops. Just like in the first part, this is a really fun and entertaining thriller with great acting, even if it requires you to suspend your disbelief a lot of the time. I'm really glad the writers wrapped up pretty much every plot thread, cause it makes the show a very satisfying watch. Like I said, the cast is amazing, but special kudos go to Park Hae Soo, who's clearly one of the best actors in the world.
