[INTERVIEW] Elle Girl (November 2010)

IU, as lovely as her age

Has the time come for a change of the nation’s little sister?

Without pretending to look like an adult, or being snobby and only pretending to look cute on stage, IU is as lovely as her age.

You came for the morning photoshoot in your school uniform.

IU: It’s been awhile since I went to school, so I went to take attendance at least and met my teacher before I came.

How’s school life for you?

IU: It’s not just difficult to keep up with the pace in school, it’s practically impossible. I almost didn’t attend at all for the 1st semester and it’s about the same now too.

Back in elementary school, you came in 1st place and even became the school president, but it seems your grades have dropped a lot.

IU: I really studied hard until my 2nd year in middle school, but when I debuted in my 3rd year, my grades plummeted. While participating in my activities as an artist, I couldn’t pay attention to my studies.

You must be feeling terrible.

IU: Not at all. I’m satisfied that I managed to find my path early on. It’s not possible to do two things at once. I have to delve deep into either my studies or singing, but music is my priority right now. My friends and I are just taking our own separate paths.

Do your parents share the same sentiments?

IU: I think my mum asked me to study because she doesn’t know my talent and feels that the only thing I can do right now is to study. Now I think they feel that singing is better than studying for me. Or they’ll just have to give in to my stubbornness. Haha.

Are you close to your friends in school?

IU: My friends are not that comfortable around me.

You’re really close to F(x)’s Luna.

IU: She’s my first friend in the entertainment industry. They asked me in an interview which girl group member I wanted to get closer to, so I picked Luna. I guess that interviewer told Luna about it. At the Music Bank waiting room, Luna approached me first to make conversation. We got closer quickly as we're the same age.

There’s a photo of both of you going to Lotte World recently too.

IU: We didn’t think we would be recognised, but people took our photos and it came out in the news too, which took us by surprise. We went secretly without our managers knowing, so we got into trouble for that.

You must feel lonely being alone as your peers mostly promote in groups.

IU: I guess so. When I debuted initially, there was no one to talk to in the waiting room, so I was really bored. It’s fine now. I have Luna and because of my radio activities, I got to know many seniors. In particular, Lee Sooyoung and Park Kyungrim sunbaenim take good care of me.

Have you had thoughts that girl groups are the trend now, which is a loss for you?

IU: I think we each have our own turf. The music they do is different from the music I do, after all.

Your popularity has been rising recently. You came in 1st place on music programs with ‘Nagging’ too.

IU: I didn’t achieve it by myself and Seulong oppa has been a great help. Seulong oppa is popular to begin with. I’m in a daze after coming in 1st place without going through much difficulty during promotions. I didn’t even join the after party on that day and went straight home to sleep.

You’ve sung quite a number of duets, with Im Seulong, Sung Shi Kyung, Na Yoon Kwon and Yoo Seung Ho as well.

IU: I have 4 single albums just from the duets, so it does seem like a lot. It seems that I have a feminine voice, so it matches well with the male singers when we sing duets. I’ve received many requests and my agency intends to limit them too now. We can’t have that becoming my image.

Who did you enjoy singing a duet with the most?

IU: Each of them have their own special characteristics. I got closer to Yoon Kwon oppa through the radio show, so we had good camaraderie, Shi Kyung oppa is a good singer to begin with, so I just went with the flow. Seung Ho oppa isn’t a singer, so I led him along. With Seulong oppa, I enjoyed working together with him.

The oppas find you adorable right?

IU: Perhaps because I worked with Shi Kyung oppa recently, he contacts me frequently. He talks to me comfortably. Haha. We’ve decided to go and eat raw seafood together with Yoon Kwon oppa as well.

When will you release your own solo album?

IU: I’m going to release a mini album soon. I’ve been receiving songs recently.

Will it be a refreshing and lively concept?

IU: I’ve received a lot of love with that sort of image, so I guess it will be that way.

You said that initially the cute concept didn’t suit you?

IU: I had a tough time during ‘Boo’ and ‘Marshmallow’. Usually, I’m rather cold, to the extent that people around me feel disappointed, so of course it was tough for me to pretend to look cute on stage. Would you believe it if I told you that growing up, I’ve never been told that I’m cute? I did receive acting lessons and got better at it though. I’m fine with cute concepts too now.

I heard that you dream of becoming a singer-songwriter like Corinne Bailey Rae.

IU: I enjoy listening to Corinne Bailey Rae or John Mayer’s songs. I want to become a singer-songwriter like them. I’ve started writing songs recently, but I’m embarrassed to show them to everyone, so I’ve only let a composer oppa I know listen to two of them.

What did he say about them?

IU: He gave me courage, of course. While saying, ‘I see buds sprouting’ (t/n: meaning that he sees the start of something to come).

Try throwing a tantrum and telling your agency what kind of music you want to do.

IU: I’ve known them since I was young (t/n: during her trainee days), so they know well what I like. A song composed by me could be on my next album. I think if I work at it slowly like this, I can make it happen.

You dislike being treated like a young child right?

IU: I don’t dislike it. It’s true that I’m young.

You’re 19, so you might think you’re all grown up now.

IU: I don’t think so. My body, face and voice are all still young. I’m glad the general public seems to want to listen to the music and vocal style of my generation.

What did you do yesterday?

IU: I had a long-awaited break. I was bumming around at home, then ate cup noodles with manager oppa, my mum and my grandmother. When I’m busy, I’m like, ‘Give me some time. I want to meet friends and do all sorts of things’, but when I actually get to rest, I’m not sure what I should do.

I heard you like reading so much that it’s as if you’re in a book club.

IU: Reading is my hobby. I’ve been reading an essay compilation about New York recently.

I heard you write regularly in your diary too.

IU: I’ve been too tired recently to write long entries, but I don’t miss a single day. I would write something like, ‘Ah, I’m so tired’ at least, before I go to bed.

Isn’t it tiring filming ‘Heroes’?

IU: Now that I’ve gotten closer to the members, it’s fine. I’m just so jealous that everyone is so pretty. Jiyeon, who is my age, Kahi unnie and Sunyoung unnie all have such small faces and slim figures.

IU is pretty too. Your manager says you just need to grow taller.

IU: While losing weight, I’ve been hearing people say that too. I didn’t go on a diet. What I hate the most is skipping a meal. I get annoyed when they don’t give me food when I’m working.

You’ll have some fun at the end of the year, right?

IU: I don’t have schedules yet, but I think I’ll be appearing as a guest for a concert. I have ambitions for a concert, so I purposely go to my seniors’ concerts often. I’m going to learn a lot and use that at my own concert.

What kind of concert do you dream of having?

IU: How about a concert with only acoustic (t/n: guitar), while sitting down from start to end? I’ll gather people with the same preferences as me and have a concert in a calm and comfortable atmosphere.

What kind of adult do you want to become?

IU: I do imagine what my 30s will be like. When I’m in my 30s, I’ll be able to do as I wish without caring about being judged by others, right? Just like Harin sunbaenim, I’ll be able to sing the songs I like, do concerts, go traveling, volunteer overseas, I hope to be able to live a carefree life like that.

Vagamente ispirato al romanzo il Conte di Montecristo di Alexandre Dumas

Trama: Go Eun-jo è una fashion designer. Le piace accontentare le persone intorno a lei, ma per colpa del tradimento dei suoi cosiddetti amici finisce col perdere tutto. Giura che si vendicherà dei traditori e dopo 5 anni torna in città sotto falso nome proprio per farlo e rovinarli.

Trama: Questa è l'emozionante storia di tre sorelle molto unite e cresciute in povertà, che vengono coinvolte in un grave incidente. Per questo, dovranno affrontare la famiglia più ricca della nazione. La sorella maggiore Oh In Joo vuole proteggere la sua famiglia con i soldi. Crescendo in estrema povertà, il suo unico sogno è vivere come una famiglia normale, ma un grave incidente sconvolge completamente la sua vita. La sorella di mezzo Oh In Kyung è una giornalista che non vuole essere comprata con i soldi e che punta solo alla giustizia. Quando un misterioso caso che risale ai suoi inizi come giornalista torna fra le sue mani, inizia a ricercare la verità. La sorella minore Oh In Hye è circondata dall'amore delle sue sorelle maggiori che lavorano duramente per lei. Il drama è ispirato al romanzo francese “Le Relazioni  Pericolose” di Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, in cui una coppia di  aristocratici inizia un pericoloso gioco di seduzione.

Trama:   Kwon Shi Hyun  e Choi Soo Ji sono migliori amici e lui è innamorato di lei. Soo Ji è  molto possessiva nei confronti di Shi Hyun, il quale le ha chiesto di  sposarla per evitare che i loro genitori si sposino. Vedendo in ciò  un'opportunità per vendicarsi dell'uomo che ha osato rifiutarla, Soo  Ji fa una proposta a Shi Hyun: se Shi Hyun riesce a far innamorare Eun  Tae Hee, il primo amore dell'uomo che l'ha rifiutata, e le spezzerà il  cuore, lei lo sposerà.  Eun Tae Hee, d'altra parte, è una ragazza fredda  che crede che le persone influenzate dall'amore siano patetiche.  Shy  Hyun, abbastanza sicuro delle sue capacità di seduzione (tanto sicuro  che ormai vede la seduzione come un passatempo),  accetta. Ma quando  questo gioco di seduzione e vendetta si trasforma in qualcosa di reale,  tutti gli interessati si ritrovano in una situazione più seria di quanto  avessero immaginato.

Il drama menziona il romanzo Cime tempestose di Emily Bronte e ne rappresenta diversi aspetti specie nel rapporto amoroso anche ossessivo che esiste tra i protagonisti.

Lee Shi Woo (Song Kang), 20’li yaşlarında ulusal hava şirketinde çalışan hevesli bir gençtir. Bütün tutkusu hava tahminleri yapmaktır. Sezgileri güçlü ve başına buyruk biridir. Kız arkadaşı Chae Yoo-Jin( Yura) ise hava durumu ile ilgili haberler yapan bir gazetecidir. Uzun süredir birlikte olmalarına rağmen aralarındaki soğukluğun farkında olmayan Shi Woo, kız arkadaşının ayrılmak istediğini söylemesi ile beklenmedik bir darbe alır. Bu sırada yaptığı bazı tahminler sonucu genel merkezde çalışma imkanı bulan Shi Woo, burada, Chae Yoo-Jin’in, Ha-Kyung’ın eski nişanlısı Han Ki-Jun ile evlendiğini öğrenir.

İki farklı jenerasyon ve iki farklı darbe alan Shi Woo ve Ha-Kyung tanışınca, dizi seyrine girer. Genel olarak bu 4’lünün etrafında dönen gündelik hikayeleri izliyoruz. Arka planda ya da ön planda daha farklı bir mevzu dönmüyor. Diğer dizilere göre alışılmadık ya da konu alınmayan bir meslek grubundan bahsediliyor olması bana ilgi çekici geldi. Bilmediğim bir alan ile ilgili fikir sahibi olmak keyifliydi. Ofisteki iş hayatı, krizler, kriz yönetimleri ve kaosun ortasında insanların özel hayatları, birbirleriyle ilişkileri anlatılıyor.

Konuyu anlatırken, eş değiştirme gibi bir hava yaratılmış olabilir ancak izlerken rahatsız edici yapay bir durum hissetmiyorsunuz. Başlarda erkeğin kadından küçük olması biraz tereddüt yaratsa bile sakin sakin işlenen senaryo içerisinde kaynayıp gidiyor. Gözümüz alışıyor mu diyeyim bilemedim. İki oyuncuyu yan yana gördüğümde hala çok yakıştırdığım söylenemez ama hikaye içerisinde çok doğallardı. Diğer yandan karakter gelişimlerini de gözler önüne serdiler. Jin Ha-Kyung’ın insanlarla ilişkisinde çok katı ve mesafeli tavrını nasıl törpülediğini görüyoruz. Lee Si-Woo’nun ise yaşının verdiği vurdum duymaz ve aşırı kendine güvenen tavırlarının zaman içinde törpülendiğine olgunlaştığına şahit oluyoruz.  

Sonuç olarak “Slice of life” dediğimiz tarzda, yumuşak, keyifli bir diziydi. Şaşırtmak ya da etkilemek için bir çabası olmayan, başkalarının hayatına pencere açan bir hikaye izledik. Tavsiye eder miyim? Ederim.

This is one of those dramas where is starts of excellent has a somewhat lazy muddled middle, then super last half, then disappointing short ending in the sense I still felt it needed more closure with some of the characters. Despite some of its faults, for me it’s still an excellent drama. Yoon Shi Yoon is phenomenal in this, playing two totally different characters and pulling it off brilliantly (*cough* it doesn’t hurt that he may be one of my top bias too) Bonus is Sung Dong Il and Shi Yoon together. They. Are. Freaking. Hilarious. Together……If you love crime/revenge/lawyer type of dramas then this one should be right up your alley. Warning there are some triggering scenes, such as rape and attempt of suicide in this.

Overwatch Recalled: MEKA Squad

A couple weeks ago, I said that I was going to be doing a post about MEKA Squad, so that is this post. This is post is going to be about the known members of the MEKA Squad, I’m not going to be able to go super in depth about each character since we don’t know that much about them, other than D.Va. I am going to go over what we know and in another post I am going to be using some of this information to theorize. 

Captain Myung is the commanding officer of MEKA. Her base of operation is in Busan and when you are on the MEKA Base map in Busan, you can hear her voice in the background sometimes. 

Dae-Hyun Park(박대현) is a mechanic for MEKA, specifically assigned to helping D.Va. Him and Hana were childhood friends. We learn that he acted as a voice of reason to Hana’s reckless nature when they were kids.  I would assume that he was able to get a mechanics position in MEKA thanks to Hana vouching for him. 

Hana Song(송하나) / D.Va is the pilot for the pink Tokki(토끼) mech. She is a former professional Mecha Guardian V player who was the reigning world champion. She was drafted along with other professional gamers because of her elite skills, instincts, and necessary reflexes. 

Yuna Lee(이유나) / D.Mon is the pilot for the red and white Beast mech and leader of the MEKA pilots. She was also a professional Mecha Guardian V player, having played on the same eSports team with D.Va which is why their aliases are similar. D.Mon’s name is also a play on the world demon. 

Kyung-soo Han(한경수) / King is the pilot for the yellow and white Singijeon(신기전) mech. He is also a former professional Mecha Guardian V eSports player. While D.Va and D.Mon played on the same team, King played on a rival team. 

Jae-eun Kwon(권재은) / Casino is the pilot for the black and green La Princesse Sereine mech. Before joining MEKA, unlike the other members, he was a Formula One racecar driver. This could have impacted the design of his mech. Casino’s aliases and mech’s name could be references to Monaco, but that’s a theory for another day... 

Seung-hwa Shi(시승화) / Overlord is the pilot of the gray and blue Mastermind mech. He is the youngest member of the MEKA Squad and a former professional gamer. His mech slightly resembles a VTOL aircraft and his aliases might be a reference to StarCraft which might have been the game he professionally played. 

Anyways, I’m going to make a post about a specific member of MEKA tomorrow, probably. Eventually, I’ll also make a post about Fio, a former Blackwatch pilot that was featured in Retribution.

My favorite ships from kdramas - appreciation post (part 2)

I have no idea if you've been waiting for that but I described the last list as part one, so I guess I should make another one. So today is The day. BTS plays in the background, list is ready, I have exam in two days but who cares, let's go!

1. What’s wrong with secretary Kim? - Kim Mi So & Lee Young-Joon

Let’s be honest. We have Park Min-Young and Park Seo-Joon. It had to work. They had to had crazy-like chemistry, it was meant to be. Whenever there was a kiss I’ve been worried my computer will set himself on fire bc all this hotness. Iconic comedy, iconic character of Park Seo-Joon, iconic romance. Also can we all agree that Park Min-Young have like the best luck when it comes to screen partners? Shit, girl. You must have saved thousands of people’s lives in your past life.

2. While you were sleeping - Nam Hoong-Joo & Jung Jae-Chan

Second Male Lead Syndrome hit hard with this one. But still not hard enough to stop me from gushing over the Nam Hoong-Joo and Jung Jae-Chan cuteness. I mean, c’mon. Suzy is motherfucker queen and Lee Jong-Suk is so pretty it makes my eyes hurt. Plus I adore that they were just so idk normal? Not perfect like most of the kdrama’s couples. She has growing hair leg, and he can be gross sometimes. SO WHAT?! Welcome to the real world. They loved each other anyway.  

3. Innocent man/Nice Guy - Seo Eun-Gi & Kang Ma-Roo

Man, between all this fluffy couples this one is kinda dark. But that's exactly what I loved about them. She was a bitch, especially at the beginning. He was a the dickest dick in the whole Dickland, Mayor of Dickville. Two sinners, bad, broken and selfish. Raw. Different. Flawed. They were hurting, they've been hurt. The ending of the drama was meh for me but this couple stands strong. And you know that Song Joong-Ki is the only one for me. He just makes me so happy whenever he's on the screen.

4. Touch your heart - Oh Jin-Shim & Kwon Jung-Rok

They proved love exists in Goblin and now they did it again. Firstly: Oh Jin-Shim is one of my favorite female characters ever. She's just so cheerful and inspirational. I watched this drama when my life was kinda shit, but after watching her journey back to the top I felt great, like I could do anything. Secondly: Kwon Jung-Rok is the cutest idiot ever. He's so charming with this awkwardness of his. And together they create this cute, healthy kind of relationship I stan so much. LOVE THEM.

5. Her private life - Sung Deok-Mi & Ryan Gold

So like I said before I'm pretty sure that Park Min-Young could create great chemistry even with a plain chair. But holy shit, in Her Private life we're getting whole Mendeleev's table. The story is pretty simple, there's no incredible groundbreaking plot, but Kim Jae-Wook is so hot and works so amazing with Park Min-Young that I didn't even care for the plot. I just wanted to look at him as long as I could. Also, Ryan Gold is perfect boyfriend. I want him for next Christmas.

6. Angel's last mission: love - Lee Yeon-Seo & Dan

Omg, I shed so many tears on this one. Being completely honest I wasn’t huge fan of Lee Yeon-Seo at the beginning, she was really annoying for me. But Dan, my baby L, was such a cutie I decided to watch it despite of female character and boy, I am so happy I did that. It was truly touching, sad but beautiful story. And mains are just two puppies, so in love with each other, that you have this sudden desire to leave kdrama’s world, go outside, meet someone and being as cute as Yeon-Seo and Dan. Fortunately, this desire passes very quickly. I have another episode to watch, you know?

7. Cheer up! Sassy go go - Kang Yeon-Doo & Kim Yeol

I know most of you have a very strong Second Man Lead Syndrome when it comes to Sassy Go Go. And let me just tell you: I would die for Seo Ha-Joon. Ji Soo is one of my favs and he did such a breathtaking job in this drama. When I started watching it, I've actually been thinking I would be suffering, bc after watching few videos on YouTube I knew that SMLS is strong with this one. I wanted to ship him with Kang Yeon-Doo. And partly I do, I am. BUT DAMN. KIM YEOL. Like I said, I was prepared for loving Seo Ha-Joon. I was rooting for him even before watching. But then that one scene happened and that was it. I was done. You know which one I'm talking about. "One, you move away first. Two, I move away first. Three, since we're in this position anyway, we do it". It made my heart beat faster and since that moment I was sold. 

Btw that plot line with parents was totally unnecessary. Why, writers? Why?

8. Because this is my first life - Joon Ji-Ho & Nam Se-Hee

This drama is so important for me, you have no idea. I just felt it to the core of my being. And no, I didn't married my hot landlord although i'm not opposed that idea but it's just freaking incredible story about growing up, learning how to do this whole adult-shit, being your own person, being someone's person and finally about finding yourself. GOD, IT WAS SO GOOD. And main couple! UGH. My babies! I know I named Kwon Jung-Rok from Touch Your Heart the cutest idiot ever but in that moment I guess I had to forget about Nam Se-Hee, bc he wins that category. But he was also understanding and respectful and patient and just...kind. Just simply kind but somehow that is everything. Plus I love Kitty. It's the prettiest cat ever.

9. Extraordinary you - Eun Dan-Oh & Haru

The latest drama I watched and holy guacamole, I loved it so much. And even though I love Baek Kyung with my whole heart I don't even know why because he's an asshole, I just have to admit that Haru and Eun Dan Oh are freaking perfect for each other. THE WAY HE RESPECTED HER. Damn, that's some valuable shit right here. Watch and learn, boys. WATCH. AND. LEARN.

10. Encounter/boyfriend - Cha Soo-Hyun & Kim Jin-Hyuk

The last but not least. Actually, it’s my fav couple on this list. Noone is able to dethrone Kang Mo-yeon & Yoo Shi-jin from DOTS from being my fav ultimate, but damn I must say Soo-Hyun and Jin-Hyuk were really close to do that. I fell in love with them since the first scene and now, long after watching it, I still think about them everyday. I’m not even joking. Where you can find a man who’ll take cute photos of you and dance salsa with you on Cuba? With whom You could talk about poetry and art? And who will be as cute as Park Bo-Gum? Any ideas? I’m not asking for friend, I’m asking for myself.
