One thing I've never seen other disco elysium fans talk about is the fact that Ruby can kill herself if you fail the rhetoric check to decide to let her go. And you get this fucking dialogue.

Like, out of all the moments in the game, this one -- when I failed the check and she died -- this was the one that left me the most emotionally distraught. I put down the game and worked on other things for the rest of the night because I couldn't just go to sleep after that.

It was probably also the first time I used Fayde too, because I really wanted to know what the alternative outcome was. And it's similarly fascinating:

The linchpin of the actual case of Disco Elysium is ultimately that Klaasje (and Ruby) decided to stage a lynching rather than call the cops due to desperation, because if they did, Klaasje would end up facing the Moralintern. Ruby fled due to desperation after Klaasje called the cops anyway. Like, the fact that Klaasje can be arrested and Ruby can die seem to me to be the most damning critiques of policing to be found in the game. Punishment under retributive justice is so world-ending that staging a lynching is preferable to finding the killer, that death is preferable to facing it.
