I just finished watching The Tale of the Nine Tailed or The Tale of a Gumiho on Netflix and I wanted to write a small review on the plot and characters of the drama because I enjoyed it so much!
But first, here's a small plot synopsis:
Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-Wook) was once the mountain spirit of Baekdudaegan. He sacrificed his life as a mountain god to resurrect the life of the woman he loved, A Eum (Jo Bo-Ah). Lee Yeon now lives his life as a nine-tailed fox in human form. He has lived this way for hundreds of years.
Meanwhile, Nam Ji-A (Jo Bo-Ah) works for a TV station as a documentary producer. She seeks out stories on the supernatural. Back in 1999, her parents were involved in a car accident in Yeou Gogae (Fox Hill). She remembers a man that saved her in that accident. Now, Nam Ji-A reviews CCTV footage from a wedding hall where a bride disappeared. She sees the man that saved her as a child walking out the wedding hall holding a red umbrella. His name is Lee Yeon. - Asian Wiki
Now let's get into the real deal! Warning, spoilers ahead.
My favourite thing about this drama was the awesome chemistry between Dong-Wook and Bo-ah, our leading cast. They both executed their characters so well and shared a great connection that managed to span over 600 years. If you enjoy fantasy and folklore this is definitely a must-watch.
Lead characters:
Oftentimes, what ruins K-dramas for me is the female lead, but this drama was an exception. Ji-A was an awesome mc. She was strong and hard-headed, always willing to solve her problems in a mature way. She wasn't waiting for Yeon to come save her or blamed anyone else for her problems. The chemistry she shared with her co-star, Dong-Wook was also extraordinary, and the love story portrayed between Ji-A and Yeon that span over decades was beautiful.
Yeon is an absolute sweetheart. His character is quite sassy which I think suits his fox persona to a T, however he does have one big flaw. In my opinion, our Gumiho was so blinded by his love for A Eum (but when a fox falls in love they fall in love for life) that he completely forgot about his relationship with his brother and how much his younger brother truly meant for him. Despite his flaw (which he ends up solving), I also find Yeon very charismatic.
There are some very specific scenes of him in the drama that make me want to scream into my pillow (like when he tricked Darkness) because of how attractive his actions are which just makes me love his character even more.
Yeon's younger brother, Lee Rang (Kim Bum), was a character I despised at the very begging but the one with the most development in the show. When I first found out that he would, later on, sacrifice his life to save his brother's instead, I felt relief ( I spoiled the drama's ending for myself just because I did not want to go through what I went through after watching Hotel Del Luna, eternal heartbreak). Now that was around episode 3, but our Rang-a soon makes up with his brother who he used to hate so much at the start of the drama and becomes one of our heroes. By the end, he has a family and ends up giving himself up for his brother's happiness.
I read many discussions online where people said that Rang's death was pointless. I don't think that's right. I think his death was what completed his character development and was necessary to show how much he changed from who he was at the start of the show. I also think if Ji-A was the one who sacrificed herself for Yeon's life the past 16 episodes of the show would have been completely pointless.
Supporting characters:
What I really liked about the supporting characters was their unique storylines. They each had a past of their own that tied in with the main plot of the story but was not repetitive. They each had a specific role to play that either affected Rang's character development (Ki Yu-Ri (Kim Yong-Ji) and Kim Soo-Oh (Jung Si-Yul)) or served as comic relief (Goo Shin-Joo (Hwang Hee)). I also loved how their storylines also were linked to Ji-A's and Yeon's past life.
The villain: I really don't have much to say about the villain because I thought he was a little two-dimensional although Bo-Ah executed her evil side perfectly. As for the Imoogi, portrayed by Lee Tae-Ri, I don't have much to say. I think the Immogi's overall role was to just be evil. There was nothing justifying his actions apart from plain thirst for power and I'm glad the character never tried to redeem himself.
Overall thoughts:
I know K-Drama writers have a thing for happy endings where the main love interest end up getting married and starting a family. For me, I would have loved to see Rang return back to life the same way Yeon did - in his past self because I hated how it took the two brothers 600 years to mend their relationship, I mean all those two had to do was talk (another recurring theme in K-Drama's - lack of communication).
