So, for the first time in a long time I haven't had someone to watch episodes of One Piece with, meaning Tumblr has to suffer the full hit of my first impression. Which starts even before this title screen.
Tumblr media
[Wano, you used to do such cool title sequences that you fit into the show in really interesting visual ways but now it seems you've switched to just the black title all the time for what I assume are valid artistic reasons. I just want you to know if you "slip up", ignore your own sense of artistic integrity, and go back to the older ones that looked way cooler, we'll still respect you. In case that was your major concern.]
Because I'm my mind the last episode ended with an ACTUAL Zoro cliff hanger when the truth is probably closer to....
Tumblr media
The FUCK Luffy!?
Tumblr media
You mean to tell me for ALL of Dressrosa you had a MUCH COOLER version of Gear 4! A version that doesn't physically bring my head pain from the wincing and eye rolling. One where you go all shadowed and glowy eyed and get a God Cloud Boa for some reason...
And you didn't use it?
Tumblr media
[Also, we could have called it something like Snakeman & The Strings which just sounds like the most hard core orchestra you've ever heard.]
As someone whose siblings were so excited for me to see Gear 4 and whose reaction of "wait this isn't it, right?" wasn't exactly popular why would you do this? "You know, Doffy is pretty much kicking my ass right now and I DO technically have another form that's more powerful, but if I use it NOW hos strings might block out some of my natural lighting and I really want to hit that perfect shot for this last move ..... "
Why!?
Tumblr media
[He even looks older! This retroactively makes all that Luffy x Zoro fic I read seem Perfectly Reasonable and yes that's the excuse I'm sticking too.]

Captain James Cook’s HMS Endeavour is believed to have sunk in Newport Harbor during the American Revolution.
As an historical link between Australia and the city of Newport, presenter Glenn Shorrock talks about the wreck of the Endeavour in this scene and presents what was then (1983) believed to be surviving wood from the wreck, including a small fragment that traveled to the moon on Apollo 15 (whose Command Module was also called Endeavour.)
However, as there has been some controversy in recent years about which shipwreck in Newport Harbor is actually the Endeavour, it is possible the space-flown fragment Shorrock is holding here (and another fragment flown on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992) may have come from the wrong ship. Maybe.
Shorrock quotes an alternative story of Endeavour’s loss, saying that it instead sunk off Newport in the 1790s is, having been renamed Liberté by a French owner. This account is less-supported by the historical evidence and may instead refer to another HMS Endeavour or to another of Cook’s ships, the Resolution. However, given the coincidence of Australia II’s opponent in 1983 being named Liberty, this probably made a better story for the producers.
Certainly it must have been compelling for mid-20th-century Australian and British America’s Cup challengers to imagine their J-Classes or 12-Metres were sailing over the wreck of the Endeavour, just as it must have been for the astronauts to think they had fragments of the right ship. But until we identify its wreck for sure, perhaps imagining is all we can do…

Let's Watch... End of the Road
Queen Latifah in a thriller? I'm already sold.
That is exactly how it feels to have your credit card declined. Nailed it.

I've randomly had the idea that it might be fun to watch an animated Disney movie every week! I'll make a new post every Sunday with that weeks movie and go ahead and watch it at some point and come back to the post to talk about it! Your favorite characters, the music, what you didn't like, etc!
For now it shall be dubbed Disney movies with Eliza. Suggestions for future movies will be welcome. Hopefully this is just a little something that makes you smile and you revisit one you haven't watched in a while, rewatch your favorite, or see one for the first time! Let's start!
Sunday Aug/27/23 to Sept/02/23 (or you just watch when you want :) )

Starting 'The Sandman' show…
As someone who ones all the original hardcovers (and a few Absolutes), my apologies to my handful of followers for the insufferable prick I'm about to become.
I will say that, if you upgrading Ol' Mouth Eyes to a main protagonist, Boyd Holbrook as Peak Asshole Southern Gentleman is on point. Also, looking forward to Sweary Matthew.

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :
Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources
Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)
Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women
Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women
Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)
Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)
Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community
Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS
Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough
Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media
Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards
Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories
Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")
And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue
Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

Y'know, there's this gripe I've had for years that really frustrates me, and it has to do with Love, Simon and people joking about it and calling it too-pg and designed-for-straight-people and all the like. (A similar thing has happened to Heartstopper, but that's another conversation.)
I saw Love, Simon in theaters when it came out my senior year in high school. I saw it three times, once with my friends/parents on opening night, once with my brother over spring break, and once with my grandparents.
On opening night, the air in the room was electric. It was palpable. Half the heads in there were dyed various colors. Queer kids were holding hands. We were all crying and laughing and cheering as a group. My friends grabbed my hands at the part where Simon was outed and didn't let go until his parents were saying that they accepted him. My friend came out to me as non-binary. Another person in our group admitted that she had feelings for girls. It was incredible. I left shaking. This was the first mainstream queer romance movie that had ever been produced by one of the main five studios, and I know that sounds like another "first queer character from Disney" bit but you have to understand that even in 2018 this was groundbreaking. Getting to have a sweet queer rom-com where the main character was told that he got "to breathe now" after coming out meant so much to me and my friends.
But also, from a designed-for-straight-people POV (which, to be frank, it was written by a bisexual author and directed by a gay man, this was not designed for straight audiences), why is it a bad thing that it appealed to the widest possible audience? That it could make my parents and grandparents see things in a new light? My stepdad wasn't at all interested in rom-coms but he saw it with me because it was something I cared about and he hugged me when we came out of the theater. My very Catholic grandparents watched it with me and though my grandpa said he still didn't quite understand the whole 'gay thing,' all he wanted was for me to be happy and to have a happy ending like Simon did. My Nana actually cried when Simon came out and squeeze my hand when his mother told him he could breathe.
And when Martin blackmailed Simon, my mom, badass ally that she is, literally hissed "Dropkick him. Dropkick him in the balls" leading to multiple queer kids in the audience to laugh or smile. Having my parents there- the only parents, by the way, out of my group of queer and questioning friends- made multiple people realize that supportive adults were out there. That parents like those in Love, Simon do exist in real life.
When people complain about Heartstopper not being realistic or Love, Simon being too cutesy, I remember seeing Love, Simon on opening night. I remember my friend coming out and my stepdad hugging me and my mom defending us through this character. I remember the cheers that went through the audience when Bram and Simon kissed and the chatter in the foyer after the movie was over and the way that this movie made me understand that happy endings do exist.
Queer kids need happy endings. Straight people need entry points to becoming allies. Both of these things can come together in beautiful ways. They can find out about more queer culture later, but for now, let them have this. Let them all have a glimpse at a better, happier world. Let them have queer joy.

We’re Coming To Get You (1983)
This is the documentary the Glenn Shorrock song of the same name was written for, and for a while it looked like there were no copies of it online. But someone uploaded this one!
To my surprise, it’s not precisely a documentary about Australia II! It was created during the 1983 Challenger Selection Series and it covers all three Australian teams that were part of the competition that year— Australia II, Challenge 12, and Advance. And hey, who’s going to complain about getting to see THREE beautiful 12-Metres in action?
While filming wrapped before the America’s Cup itself, this documentary does have footage of the 12s practicing and competing in a special inter-team event in Australia, early-80s synth music, 18-Foot Skiff footage, delightful Aussie slang like “done a rocko”, the title song AND “Cool Change”, and a lot of people in shirtsleeves and ties.

Let's Watch...
Kiss of the Damned
This is a 2013 film I'd never heard of until @shibinus got me on this Milo Ventimiglia train. I bought season 1 of This is Us bind, because Erin hyped it up so much, and it made me cry in every. episode.
So let's see how Milo fares in a movie, eh?
I think I'd also stare at Milo like an absolute freak and then flee the premises if I chanced across him in public. I appreciate the social awkwardness of this (I am presuming) vampire so far.

hey after kristoph gavin planted atroquinine in a kid's favorite nailpolish, while he was spending seven long agonizing years waiting for the kid to actually poison herself, how badly do you think he pissed his dumb little blue pants when 6 years in his brother presumably out of nowhere published a song titled "atroquinine my love" and made the whole world sing it for a little while

Jon’s little whispered “it is remarkably easy to buy an axe in central London,” will always be one of my favourite random lines from TMA. The police may claim to be tackling knife crime but nothing can stop one (1) sleep deprived archivist with unchecked paranoia
