I started writing this last week, then my tonsillitis floored me so @bunnymajo beat me with her own post on the topic (it's v. good, check it out!!), but I still wanted to share a few of my thoughts about why y'all should consider picking up the Discotek release of the Kaitou Saint Tail anime series on blu-ray.

I'll be honest, Kaitou Saint Tail wasn't my favourite magical girl series growing up in the mid-90s, I found myself far more drawn to Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (in that order). However, as I've grown older and re-watched the anime series a couple of times, I've grown to appreciate a lot about it that perhaps I didn't so much when I was young and had a million anime series vying for my attention.

The anime

If you've never seen the Kaitou Saint Tail anime, Haneoka Meimi is regular teenage student by day who rights wrongs by night as the thief Saint Tail. How does she know about what bad things have gone down in the local community? Why her BFF (Mimori Seira) is a nun-in-training, of course! So when Seira hears about things being stolen etc. she relays this information to Meimi so she can set things right.

Complicating the situation is Asuka Daiki, the son of a local detective who notably failed to catch a previous phantom thief (hmm!). Asuka Jr. wants to stop Saint Tail no matter what and luckily the local mayor is cool with giving him the status required to do so. Meimi slowly finds herself torn between how she feels about Asuka Jr. (whom she bickers with but ultimately cares about) and how Asuka Jr. feels about the thief Saint Tail.

So obviously if you like magical girl-type series and you're keen on a cute lil tween romance with some wacky kids' show thieving then you're going to be keen to watch (or read, the manga is adorable) the series no matter what. If you're on the fence, here are a couple of things I found to be stand-outs in Kaitou Saint Tail that you might like about it too.

Saint Tail = Seira & Meimi

Saint Tail the thief is really a team of two people. You've got Seira who gathers all the intel & helps plan, then you've got Meimi who acts as the muscle and executes the scheme. If you removed either of them you wouldn't have the legendary phantom thief everyone talks about in the series. Seira is never magical herself, she goes between God/Meimi/the community to help save "lost lambs" but her role is vital and Meimi's feats as Saint Tail are truly part of a team effort.

I've honestly always loved this about the series, that Seira isn't some friend kept in the dark nor is she another magical thief to team up with, she's got her own unique role to play that utilises her skills just as much as Meimi's role relies on her talents too. Together they are a phantom bigger than any one tween girl could ever be.

Meimi is physically adept

There's room for all types of magical girls in the genre imho and these days we've seen lots of magical girls who can land a solid punch as well as those better suited to intellectual challenges. However, in the mid-90s at a time when Tsukino Usagi and Hanasaki Momoko said it was OK to be clumsy and not great at athletics, Meimi said it was just as OK to be athletic and have excellent fine motor skills.

One thing I didn't note in my above summary of the series is that while Meimi does a whole lot of VISUALLY magical girl things like transform in the anime, she doesn't actually have any supernatural abilities. Meimi is instead adept at stage magic thanks to her father's profession and she plays a lot of tricks to get the job done (while following in her mother's footsteps as well). Meimi can't punch a bad guy through a wall like a Precure, but her strength allows her to frequently save other characters or pull herself out of tricky situations.

Asuka Jr. provides a great contrast

While Asuka Jr. can ride a bike pretty fast he's not that physically strong, which is a contrast to a lot of love interests in the genre who are tough enough to give the heroine enough time to finish the job (Tuxedo Kamen and Limone, for example). Asuka Jr. is more of an intellectual who despite managing to figure out a lot of what's going on with Saint Tail's capers, can never seem to get pin her down (and yeah yeah we know Meimi looks like Saint Tail but this is a cartoon for kids, being in on that while Asuka Jr. goes mad trying to find Saint Tail is part of the overall charm of the thing imho).

I think a decent chunk of what I like about Asuka Jr. as a male lead in Kaitou Saint Tail is that he's not some older, mysterious guy who helps solve problems; Asuka Jr. is a brat who causes most of Meimi's problems and because of his clueless youth he's also quite oblivious to her burgeoning romantic feelings for him. But I love that? They both feel like they're young kids challenging each other on an equal playing field.

While Asuka. Jr doesn't necessarily disagree with Saint Tail's objectives (to right wrongs), he doesn't support her methods (stealing is baaaaaad) and he's following his own moral code which is perhaps a little more conventional than hers. Meimi and Asuka jr. certainly bicker, but they have a lot in common that becomes apparent over time and their differences do indeed prove to be complementary to each other's in the long run.

The stakes are fairly low

Wait, isn't this a bad thing? Shouldn't the stakes be super high in order for us to care about the series? No, I don't think every magical girl series needs to have high stakes to leave an impact or be meaningful. I love that Kaitou Saint Tail isn't about a potentially world-ending event or magical abilities that could change reality as we know it. Heck, there's an episode where the entire goal of Saint Tail's elaborate scheme is to get back a notebook that a classmate gave to her crush accidentally before he can read it.

In that sense, it harkens back to a lot of older majokko shows that, while having some supernatural gifts for the heroine that Meimi doesn't technically have, still chose to focus on the lead solving personal problems or issues in the local community rather than fighting to save the planet.

This isn't to say there are no stakes at all or anything. Meimi's greatest problem lies in her diverging identities and the fact that, as ostensibly a criminal to those not helped by her talents, Saint Tail being unmasked would ruin her life. I know they're not huge stakes compared to galactic evils, but Saint Tail being an outlaw and the way the persona is both a blessing & curse to Meimi certainly is present throughout the series.

Kaitou Saint Tail's stakes might not be as high as those in Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, Tokyo Mew Mew, or any number of Precure seasons, but there's definitely a place for that in the genre and if you'd like something a little more laid back (that's still plenty of fun & with twists and turns a plenty, mind you) then this series might be worth checking out.

The anime doesn't overstay its welcome

The Kaitou Saint Tail anime is a fairly tight production that deftly balances fun filler (remember when we were allowed to have filler eps???) with more emotional story touch points and doesn't feel at all drawn out, which was certainly an issue even for some of my favourite series of the period. While I wouldn't say the anime is perfect or anything, it really doesn't have any majorly weak arcs or huge dips in quality overall.

Kaitou Saint Tail has lovely music (I'm partial to the first OP/ED combo myself), some great 90s animators at work (Abe Junko, Ishino Satoshi, Kadonosono Megumi & Gotou Keiji, Watanabe Nobuhiro, Ochi Kazuhiro, Motohashi Hideyuki, etc.), and a cast of talented seiyuu (Sakurai Tomo as Meimi and Inoue Kikuko as Seira being the stand outs).

While there are some changes to the source material and a lot of the cute, whispy beauty of Tachikawa Megumi's original artwork is lost on screen, the animated version of Kaitou Saint Tail is worth picking up not just to support the release of magical girl titles in the US market, but because it is a solid little series that I know I always appreciate spending some time with.

Anyway those are my rambling thoughts on the series. It won't be for everyone, but if you're interested in magical girl classics then you might want to check out the upcoming US release from Discotek on blu-ray.

Appearance and Personality

Appearance: Lucia has a petite yet average female body, let alone that she focuses on her daily nutrients within her schedule which was the cause of her body's physical changes. She has cloud periwinkle colored fluffly hair which only the two sides of her hair are longer to reach to the ground while on her behind which is cut to her neckline. She has lavender blush colored eyes which they can turn into bell white whenever she uses her willow abilities, just like her fellow forest whisperling companions. Lucia is morefully a composed young women, but she tends to keep her mouth quiet often than speaking.

Personality: Born within the third part of the Land of Wisteriana, known as the Blooming Grove. Lucia grew up within the states within various chapels and temples created by the blooming blossoms, her family including herself as well would often visit the temple to continue the following traditions from their main country itself, though no feelings were added from anyone in this country Lucia was offered to be the gardener's for the temple right after her practices for her abilities had been caught by the mage who worked for the temple herself. It wasn't before long when she agreed to join in after a recent issue she had that has an involvement with wish-granting by the flower bed around midnight o'clock. 

As time passed on, she continued her practices hoping to develop some improvements within her abilities as she continued her training sessions right after every single effort she took. Lucia continued her daily schedule till the current timeline. 

The Lucia in the current timeline is now a composed yet silent young lady, who seems to value her time slowly but doesn't waste most of her free time on anything that catches her interest, especially whenever she sees something that does not impress her current mood. Mostly she stays in a poker face-like expression, which doesn't last long whenever she does her training sessions rather privately away from a crowd full of people. She tends to be silent often but can reply if that’s necessary.

She rarely talks towards anyone, including her own dorm mates, except for those who belong within the rift dimension. She’s often seen with some of the crestria demi-gods, the angels within the rift, or even Westyn’s group who were scouted within RSA, including her fellow forest whisperling buddies such as Shirrira and her cousins and the other races which allow her to talk comfortably without hesitation. Despite herself also being scouted like the rest of them, Lucia then decided to keep herself in a low profile for now. Though she can be social if you can try to talk with her if the timing is correct, she may interact if that’s a possible chance.

She’s very patient with anyone who tries to speak to her aside from her fellow rift citizens or the people who try to communicate with her, let alone that she doesn't sound meek or let alone timid as well, Lucia is very mature for her age, especially when she’s good with her formalities with others with status or not. Aside from that, she often gives advice and opinions whenever a question arises that perks her mind, sometimes she’s closed off or open-minded but she picks what she wants to do with it. Though she can rather create light entertainment for others to light up the mood a bit.

Be mindful whenever you speak, because Lucia has a strong yet sharp sense of hearing for words, especially related or not related to topics at all. She's selective about topics being picked on, let alone is rather sensitive or disturbed by hearing something that isn't much for her, more fully she can be judgemental and awfully cold with the person she dislikes, criticizing rather with negativity which she's only stating facts and doesn't care od what the other person thinks of her replies afterward. She doesn't see much effort in anyone who tries to sugarcoat her words regardless.

Composed as a lady at all times, let with abilities that needed to be practiced as well. This forest whispering has her way through her granting abilities, but please don't ask much from her or she'll take a breath.

-The name 'Lucia' means light and is the feminine form of Lucius and of Italian origin meaning. While her surname 'Primrose' is habitational name from the lands of Primrose (Fife). The placename is probably of Celtic origin, containing Pictish or Gaelic ros 'wooded promontory'

-She's based on Farrah Goodfairy, from the Ever After High Franchise and Series.

-Is born from two mothers, so she doesn't have a father figure. But her uncle is considered as one.

Once midnight hits, the spells and the wish itself will be reverse back to normal which it affects her mentality due to her past, she's recovers her sanity by laying on the flowerbeds around at night but that's a slight minimum. However the three wishes cannot be granted by the same person ever permanently after.)

-According to her info, she seems to be closed off by many people as a child ever since they had seen her magic such as wish granting which is conflicted to her greatly. One night near midnight, a high-class noble had planned a kidnapping on Lucia for her magic for wishes but was caught by one of the temple's sevants servants during the progress of the crime. Petrified of the incident, Lucia loses much of her mental health which cost her to be hospitalized for one whole week.

-Her huge dislikes for nobility and wealth status was from the incident she went through as a child.

-Despite her gaining a curse (even if she's from the rift, which some race abilities are the curses itself), she never grants a person's selfish wishes. Which her curse may not work on them at all.

-Based on her personality, Lucia is very silent due to her not being very communicative with others. But whenever she speaks, she sounds composed and polite towards anyone she speaks to normally. Which is why I chose Suzuko Mimori to be her voice actor.

-Struggles to recover her sanity, but with her curse intact. It was not easy.

-Seems to explore ruins with Venomia at daily chances.

-Is often seen with Harper and Westyn on her daily basis.

Higurashi: Beyond Midnight Chapter 9

It is 4 am.

Turns out there are other people here responsible for the missing vehicles. It's nothing as spooky as a serial killer though. It's just a bunch of goons hired to kill.

That fight scene with Mion didn't seem well choreographed. Higurashi is not a fight manga so an actual fight scene looks really off. And Mimori managed to hide it somewhat by focusing more on Otobe's reaction to the fight than the fight itself.

She never went for the kill with anyone. Everyone got cut in the shoulder or wrist and one guy got shot in the leg.

I love how much of a normal guy Arakawa is. He came to investigate ghosts and supernatural stuff and he got caught up in a suicide investigation, a murder, and now a deadly family dispute.

I'd be crying and panicking just as much as he is if I got caught up in this situation.

And I just noticed Otobe bites his lip when he's really scared.

Fun fact: Dragonball began serialization in 1984, one year after when Higurashi takes place in. If they'd gotten to have a normal life, I bet Mion and her friends would be huge Dragonball fans.

I hope Towada gets through this. She had the resolve to kill Takumi but that was definitely born out of desperation more than anything. And now that she's no longer desperate, she has the room to think and grieve and decide what to do.

Even if Towada knew Takumi was trying to clean up his act, he can't take back every blow he's inflicted on her nor can he take back the fear he would cause just by getting up. He'd shown what he is when he's frustrated and feels looked down on. If he lost his job, how do we know he wouldn't have gone right back to drunken violence.

The Takumi she loved had been dead since they graduated college. She should grieve that man and not the man he was when she killed him.

Spoiler Discussion

I am sticking with the "Mion is Shion" idea I've been pushing this whole arc and this succession crisis feeds into it more.

The Sonozaki heir has a tattoo placed on their back which signifies them as the heir/head of the family. Mion is the one with the tattoo.

If that were Mion, there would be no valid arguments. She could just show that tattoo and declare it as the proof she went through the rites to inherit the family.

But since Shion doesn't have that tattoo, she can't make that claim.

Mankai Gauges in Yuuna Yuuki wa Yuusha de Aru

Spoilers for Yuuna Yuuki wa Yuusha de Aru, Washio Sumi wa Yuusha de Aru, Sonoko After, the second YuYuYu season, and maybe a little more?

I believe all of the Mankai Gauges may have a deeper meaning in where they are placed. They may be able to bring some insight into the characters, or just some cool details that most don’t notice on their first second or even third watch (I noticed it on my fourth watch). I’m only going to do the YuYuYu and WaSuYu characters right now because I haven't finished the light novels or second or third season yet.

Yuuki Yuuna

The placement of Yuuna’s Mankai Gauge is on her right fist. It is important to differentiate right from left because they can have very different meanings. Left hands are often associated with bad luck, and the inverse is true for right hands. One thing to note is that hands can also symbolize marriage, which as we know from season two Yuuna, that’s pretty important. Although marriage bands or rings are more commonly worn on the left hand in Japan, this is because of an old superstition that there is a vein in your left hand that leads directly to your heart. This may then imply that there was no “heart” or “love” in the marriage because it was simply to save her friends and not out of true love. 

    Another possible reason for the gauge being on her hand is because she is the one guiding the story. She moves the story forward and has in character motivations of why she does so. She is the one that keeps the team moving forward, she brings hope. 

    You could also say she “holds” the most potential, but I believe that is a stretch. 

Washio Sumi/Tougou Mimori

Yes, I know, it’s her boob. There was definitely fan service involved in this one. I would like to believe that it means something more than that though. While it being on her boob is definitely fan service, there's also the aspect that it represents femininity. Tougou is known throughout the series for being the most feminine girl on both of her teams, she is described as having “traditional beauty.” She is also incredibly mature compared to the rest of the group, this is especially apparent in the first few episodes of WaSuYu where she is quite stiff and formal. 

We can also take the placement of her gauge as being over the heart because it is on the right side of her chest where the heart is. Tougou is the heart of the group in many ways. She is one of the most - if not the most - emotional girls on the team. At least in YuYuYu she’s the emotional one, in WaSuYu she is actually the most reserved, which is quite an interesting parallel. She also lets her heart drive her. While she is a logic based person, constantly in search of knowledge and tends to take a technical approach to things, this is shown to be only a facade. Her emotions are what motivate her biggest choices in the story. During the first fight, she is afraid and immediately assumes she can’t fight because she feels incapable. She goes to extremes because of her desire to know the truth. Her biggest decision in season one: breaking the Shinjyuu-Sama’s barrier is driven by her love for Yuuna and everyone else on the team who’s had to suffer. 

Inubouzaki Fuu

    There were no good pictures of her mankai gauge on her person, so I just went with her transformation screen. 

    Fuu’s gauge is on her left thigh, which is quite fitting for her character. Thighs can often symbolize strength and power, which Fuu is full of, her catchphrase even being “Girl Power” and several variations of that. Thighs can also mean support, Fuu is the leader of the team, and could be considered the one supporting or carrying the group. Not to mention she’s been taking care of Itsuki for many years, and is shown literally carrying her in a flashback. Fuu emotionally supports the group and guides them through hard times. It also shows how she paved the path for the other heroes, walking first to show them the ropes and supporting them through this new endeavor.

Inubouzaki Itsuki

    Itsuki’s Mankai Gauge is located on her back between her two shoulder blades. This has many implications. The main one that comes to mind is how it is a spot of vulnerability, and Itsuki is definitely the most vulnerable of the group. Not only is she the youngest, but she is also quite sensitive and shy, making it easy for her to be hurt and vulnerable. She often recounts how Fuu protects her, showing that Fuu also thinks of Itsuki as more vulnerable than herself. 

    Another thing to be noted is the idea of “having someone’s back.” It is quite obvious throughout the series that Itsuki has Fuu’s back and always has. She supports her big sister through anything and is constantly there for her. 

    The Gauge is also incredibly close to the throat, which is representative of the ability to speak. Knowing of Itsuki’s arc and her dreams of singing and losing her voice because of going Mankai, this is quite significant. Since the gauge is behind the throat it could symbolize that losing her voice was an unknown betrayal and attack. Not only did it destroy her chances of pursuing her dream, but it was a betrayal of trust from the Shinjyuu-Sama and the Taisha. 

    The back also can represent the past. Itsuki spends a lot of time reflecting on the past, probably the most time aside from Tougou. She often recalls events with her and her big sister, and she uses her past to push her forward, motivating herself to not always be behind Fuu but beside her. Fuu also says that Itsuki is “in front” of her, how Itsuki has surpassed Fuu, the sign on her back could then symbolize her growth from looking at Fuu’s back and being behind her to the reverse.

Miyoshi Karin

    Karin’s Mankai Gauge is located on her left shoulder. Karin in a certain aspect is the most reliable of the group, or at least she becomes the most reliable throughout the story. She initially doesn’t want to be a part of the Hero Club or have anything to do with them but overtime, she is the one who sacrifices the most when Yuuna can’t transform. She is most knowledgeable of battle tactics, and by far the most trained. This shows her to be reliable in battle and that can be interpreted as a shoulder to rely on, and in some circumstances (season two comes to mind) a shoulder to cry on.

Nogi Sonoko

    Sonoko’s Mankai Gauge is on her stomach, more specifically the belly button area. I was a bit confused at first, aside from Sonoko going with her gut feelings, I was not sure how this related to her in any other ways. Then I looked into the chakra placement, which explains a lot. Her Mankai Gauge is in the place of the Sacral Chakra, the second chakra on ones body. It is connected to creativity and sensuality, which sounds a lot like Sonoko. Focusing on your Sacral Chakra is also said to enhance intuition, Sonoko is known throughout the series for having great intuition, despite her ditziness. Another really interesting feature is that Sonoko’s Mankai Gauge is associated with Lotus flowers, the same flower often used to symbolize the Sacral Chakra. 

    That’s all I have for now, I may write more about this as I go through the series, please no spoilers for anything in the end of the second season or the third season as I have not yet watched them and have done an okay job avoiding spoilers so far. Let me know your thoughts, this is just a cool theory of mine and is based mostly on a western perspective, so I’m sure there’s some things I’ve missed.

Personality (MBTI type: ESTP): If you manage to significantly influence Solar, it's highly likely that her own personality traits will revolve around yours.

But in general, Solar seems to have a lively and upbeat character. Known for having many fans of different genders, she can be confident and prideful but she obsesses over what her reputation is like and what others think of her. The girl only shows what she wants to show in public, suggesting this persona is superficial. If put in the right conditions... it's not too much of an effort to make her break.

She believes in "you only live once" and commonly ends up in situations that aren't ideal for her safety, but she claims to enjoy living on the edge.

For most of Solar's life, her father has spoiled her- leading her to believe that she should just get the things she asks for. If she isn't treated like a princess in certain situations, she'll become petty and irate. Despite this, she is aware that she needs to put in the work effort as an idol. Reiji: Solar is mesmerized by overall 'butler-like' demeanour of his. Although she wouldn't go far as to crush on or date him, Reiji sets Solar's standards when it comes to dating overall. Solar also thinks that his personality and attitude are similar to Lunar's. Reiji acts indifferent towards Solar.

Ayato: He only knows her because of Kou. They're just mere acquaintances - however, Ayato has stuck with the annoying nickname of 'Sailor Moon wannabe' (Usako for short) for Solar, which she really does not appreciate.

Laito: This girl loathes his personality AND his fashion sense. Prior to meeting him, Setsuna heard tidbits of what his behaviour is like and naturally felt disturbed. But what really took the cake was the face-to-face meeting. Everything about his presence was uncomfortable to just... take in.

Subaru: As soon as he discovered that she's associated with Kou, it's just a huge 'NOPE' from him. Solar is genuinely confused as to why Subaru dislikes Kou but that won't stop her from teasing him relentlessly. With certain heeled shoes on, she's 1cm taller than him and will never shut up about it- much to Subaru's annoyance.

Ruki: Because of her connection with Kou, Solar is aware of how quick Ruki can reduce the faint-hearted to tears. She is also constantly reminded by Hiromi to completely stay out of his way, but Solar is aware of how much resentment Hiromi holds against the Mukami name. From her encounters with him, he just acts indifferent to her.

Kou: Under the same idol agency, Kou has decided to take Solar under his wing at work - aiding in training her so she could be ready for the big stage. Regarding him as 'senpai', the two naturally get along and will light up whatever room they're in together and she admires him very much. But Solar is not very sure if her senpai also sees her as more than a friend + if Kou tries to pull anything that could be interpreted as something intimate, Solar will lose all her logical thinking and wits. She seems to have this romanticized ideal version of Kou in her head, making her blind to his careful manipulation and making her believe he does no wrong. There is a limit, of course, but she generally looks at him with rose-coloured lenses.

Azusa: Appearance-wise, Solar thinks he looks a bit cute- but is still concerned about his health in general. Personality-wise, she is extremely weirded out by his masochistic nature. But still, she's concerned and wishes to strike a conversation one day.

Solar adores and I mean adores cute girls, especially ones with genuine, sweet personalities. And she definitely enjoys flustering them. The girl may subtly flirt with Yui from time to time, but everything Yui says- Solar will take to heart. She honestly cares about what this adorable girl thinks of the future idol. They're not close, close friends but Solar will take any chance to learn something new about Yui.

Solar is currently unaware of the boys not being human + the existence of paranormal beings in general- AKA she's completely oblivious to the real world of DL
