"Seven years ago we all went through the flames; and the happiness of some of us since then is, we think, well worth the pain we endured."
Although Dracula was published in 1897, some think that it takes place in 1893 because of the way the days and dates used line up. If that's the case, Jonathan Harker's epilogue, seven years later, would have been added around 1900. A new era bubbling with new change and new conventions. The story ends with Jonathan looking ahead to a new century filled with the unknown and being able to look on the past, despite its darkness, "without despair."

Love the juxtaposition of Jack being all, ‘I hate writing in pen on paper, grrr.’ and Van Helsing just telling him to suck it up and write
Vs.
Mina: ‘Oh dear, I don’t like to complain, but pen and paper is a bit inconvenient.’ and Quincey immediately rushing in to give her an even newer, sleeker travel model of a typewriter.
(Also, I’d bet money that Quincey and Arthur were tripping over each other to be the one to buy it for her.)

❤️‍🩹: What normal or innocuous thing has their past ruined for them? Are they attempting to remedy this?
(pick your favorite Dracula character for this)
Pick my favorite character? Ha! I refuse. Here, have a collection of post-book characters:
Jonathan - Strong handshakes. It might sound silly, or at least he thinks it sounds silly (Dracula rarely ever held his hand yet a hand on his shoulder etc doesn't bother him in the same way as handshakes, even though none of the grips he encounters among humans are strong enough to feel the same), but after several instances where someone's firm business shake sends him to the edge of a panic attack, he starts trying to find ways to avoid shaking hands. He develops something of an eye for who is likely to have a firmer handshake and tries especially to avoid it with them, coming up with other ways to lead the conversation along or other gestures of greeting. He almost never refuses a handshake when it's offered (that would be too rude) but tries to ensure it isn't offered to begin with.
Mina - For a while, red wine. Specifically, when it left any kind of trace on her lips after drinking it. She can watch other people drink it just fine, she can drink white wine, but a red she can't abide. It's not about the winepress comment or even the sight of Dracula's lips red with blood, but the memory of her own. It makes her feel unclean and wrong. She does try to get over this and for the most part succeeds eventually, at least to the point that she can drink it, but she still prefers other beverages much more and wouldn't seek it out.
Arthur - He can't play tennis anymore. It's not something that really comes up very often, since most of his friends aren't as sporty or at least not in that way. But he just feels physically sick at the very idea. Some of his best memories with Lucy are of games together... some of his last memories of her happy and strong, too. He can only associate it with everything that's been lost and he hates it now. He will never get rid of their old gear, but he will also never play again. He is not interested in changing that.
Jack - Whenever he's tired, he doesn't put sugar in his tea. He used to always do so. He in fact prefers it sweeter and usually puts in more than most people. But he associates sugar with Renfield now, and with distance he starts to feel guilty at how he handled pretty much everything to do with him. In a way, it's silly, because the sugar wasn't even one of the special treatments from Jack, just Renfield saving up the amount he got with his meals like every other patient. But it's where it all began in a way, and it just reminds him of all his screw-ups and he can't eat it. Most of the time he tries to make himself do so anyway, logic himself out of it and not change his habits, but when he's sick or tired or emotional he just can't.
van Helsing - The cold. Ever since that trip through the mountains in early November, he can't stand the cold. He doesn't ever talk about it, just bundles up hugely and if anyone ever comments he makes a joke about his old bones. He likes to spend cold days inside by a warm fire.

Entry one: Date November 8th 1898
We finally managed to defeat Dracula yesterday and he is within my custody. It was not without loss of life as our dear friend and comrade, Quincey Morris was killed by the demon. However, his death was not in vain as ultimately we did succeed, though killing the creature has proven difficult.
Jonathan wanted to use his Kukri upon the bastard, but I stopped him from doing so, and told him that I will do my utmost to study the creature to find a way to kill it for good. Ms. Harker, on other hand, seems to be fine, and the foul taint of Dracula has receded as far as I have been able to deduce from examinations of the woman. Jonathan seems to think otherwise, and claims that his wife sometimes has odd cravings. These are likely to be nothing more than the typical strange hormonal changes a woman goes through and nothing more.
On the other hand, I find myself wondering if Dracula cannot be put to better use than to simply put him down. It seems to be what the creature ultimately wants after all, and it has asked me why I hesitate to kill it completely. Dracula claims to be the eldest and first of his kind, I imagine his body could provide many answers about vampires and the disease known as Vampirism, and I plan on finding out exactly what that will be.

There's also the fact that Joanthan would visit her at her school where she taught
It inspires the lovely image of Jonathan 'Down to Make Out with his Fiancée/Wife in Front of Anyone' Harker showing up to ask her out for lunch. Which is sweet! She loves that!
But at the same time, she knows she's walking a thin line between, 'Okay, need to be composed in front of my students or I'll be a hypocrite in their eyes,' and, 'Ohhh but LOOK at him, I can't just NOT give him my arm and maybe share a kiss or two or three...' Like--
Jonathan: Lunch date? Hold arm? Kisses? c:
Mina: Lunch yes, the rest no.
Jonathan: :c
Mina, trying to dodge the many interested gazes of her girls from the door: Jonathan, the students.
Jonathan: <:'c
Mina, sweating: Look, maybe once we're away from the building...
Jonathan, full 🥺: Mina...hates Jonathan? Mina is unyielding? Mina is incapable of loving Jonathan? I am running away. I am packing my little law books and going out to the Aerated Bread Company as an unloved solicitor's clerk. I can no longer stand the heartbreak.
Mina: ...
Mina's etiquette students: :)
Mina, after letting Jonathan take her arm and sharing a kiss: Our next lesson will be on when to ignore the lessons. Extra good marks for everyone who breathes not one word of it beyond the classroom.
Mina's etiquette students: Yes, Miss Murray. :)
Later, Mina will red-facedly report to Jonathan that he is responsible for a minor insurrection among her class, what with them all now distracted by questions less to do with decorum and more about their own courtship, and do they kiss in public all the time, and demanding to know if he has an available younger brother and the like.
She hopes he's proud of himself.
(He is.)

cant wait to scroll through the Dracula tag and watch everyone focus on “Lucy met me at the station, looking sweeter and lovelier than ever” even when someone just went missing because you’re so right that is today’s important takeaway

On one hand, my inner Snooty McSnooterson makes me want to object whenever someone uses Gregg Shorthand to illustrate what Mina and Jonathan are writing, because they probably would have been using Pitman Shorthand, since it's the more common system in Britain.
On the other hand, Gregg was new and shiny at the time and is objectively the better shorthand system (less so at the time, admittedly, but it still did away with that thickness of pen strokes business). It would be in character for Mina especially to be ahead of the curve.

On another note I excuse Mina not talking about her nightmare to the Boys :
1)if i had to listen and write down a book of traumatic and nightmarish events including the death of my best friend I would have terrible nights in the aftermath,
2)the self-destructive behaviour of not wanting to burden others with your troubles because they’re having it “worse” than you is a very human thing. ALSO encouraged and applied to women a lot historically, 0/10 would not recommend.

Oh man, okay, a lot of you who are reading Dracula for the first time really don’t know how completely it invented the tropes, do you?
Don’t get me wrong, vampire folklore existed way before Dracula - but to White Boy Jonathan Harker - and the other characters later - and to the readers of this book when it was first published... this is more like you’re reading a new fantasy novel and obviously there’s Something Bad In The Spooky Place but you don’t yet know why the ring of stones in the sandy pit or the fall of dead lizard-birds or the weird smell of lavender in the air is significant, or what you’re supposed to do about it. You don’t look at the thorn-tree on the western hill with the single lapis lazuli arrowhead at its foot and think “oh shit, I know what THAT means, time to grab some everfire and a sackful of agar-wort”. Sure, Jonathan has seen some spooky stuff, but even though he knows the word vampire he fundamentally doesn’t know what a vampire is, what its tropes and habits are, what he’s walking into here.
Not sure how he’s explaining away the wolves to himself, though. Oh, wait, sorry, yes, he’s pretty sure it was the paprika...

AU where Jonathan kinda becomes a fourth Weird Sister
His relation with Dracula is kinda like the sister’s relationship with Dracula — Dracula is in a sense their care taker, but in a(n abusive/irresponsible) Owner-Pet sort of way. Drac feeds them, houses them, and is clearly fond of them, but also holds himself above them. He has Jonathan on a leash and delights on tugging it, especially away from those who show concern for him. The Weird Sister’s deal is less clear, but it isn’t hard to imagine them once being like Lucy — normal humans who’s corpses he makes his minions
So the sister’s, amused by the newest pet in the house and expecting the count to get bored of him eventually, mess with him like they do in canon. But Jonathan notices things. He pays attention to the details, even if he doesn’t understand them entirely. He picks up on similarities and he bonds with them, much to their surprise
(AU either has the sisters help Jonathan escape early plus saves Lucy from dying bc Solidarity Yo OR has Mina and co stumble across a nasty surprise when they find her lost fiancé is now Dracula’s Groom, standing with Dracula’s Brides, turned into something Not Human and no longer hers)
