This is the first time I've made something for my own MC. "Dear Love" refers to my IRL partner, whom I pretend to write to about my adventures in the Devildom.
I play the game as everyone's platonic friend. I am asexual and enjoy Queer Platonic Relationships for myself. I also play matchmaker in my own Devildom universe.
My attributes: average height. Black hair styled with a medium hold matte pomade. Brown eyes. Beauty mark under my nose. Dimple on one side of my face.
Clothing: Prefer formal wear over casual. Suspenders over belts. Monochromatic colours or loud ostentatious patterns, no in-between. Comfy dress shoes in black or brown but open to other colours to match outfits; I'm wearing leather monkstrap shoes in the picture. Metal accents like tie clips are crucial. Got laser eye surgery but sometimes wears fake glasses to feel something on my face. Satchel contains good pens, quality paper, and workstation. Fitbit on my wrist to count every step I take to solve the problems of the day.
Personality: wry and dry humour. Workaholic. Lifelong learner. The Parent Friend. Always happy to help. Frontline tendencies.
Skills: technical writing, sewing and clothing construction, trades and mechanics, hair cutting, musician (piano and guitar), singer and actor (theatre), novelist, artist
Likes: obtaining new skills and making new friends. Justice. Equity.
Dislikes: misunderstandings, situations that could have been handled effectively but weren't. Unclear communication.
Occupation before I got Isekai'd: Director of Operations
Character I relate to the most: Lucifer
Character I would date if I was inclined: Diavolo, because he reminds me of my actual partner.
The reason I ship DiaLuci so hard: I love my partner the most and this is a mirror to that, right down to situations and actual conversations we have had in real life. The narrative potential. Other reasons.
My MC and OM Characters in my Devildom:
Lucifer: would smugly tell me that I've used a comma splice and I'd tell him to "shove a semi-colon in it". He's my bestest friend in the entire Devildom. We go to cafes and bookstores and go shopping for office supplies. I tell him to stop working so hard and he stares at me like "You're the one telling me this? The audacity." I needle him about his crush and he tells me to fuck off but his face is red.
Mammon: my other bestie but in a wildly different way. He brings out the shit-disturber in me. We play billiards together and play for treats. I disapprove of his gambling but am all-in on the shopping. He takes me out to all the best food places. "Try this, Beckett, you'll really love it." Meanwhile it's some sort of Devildom Atrocity, but somehow it's still good.
Levi: my nerd friend. I bring him offerings and leave them outside his door. We play games often with Mammon and I kick their butts at fighting games, but get wrecked when I have to make choices. We stay up hellishly late and I wake up with chocolate on my face. "Lets do this again: ive got the hottest new dating sim to try!" We are both groggy and destroyed and i have to go to work, but I agree to come back tonight.
Asmo: my favourite boy toy. He's stylish as hell and knows what looks good on anybody. Hes my personal stylist. I cut his hair in exchange. Just like with Mammon I go shopping with Asmo, except he knows all the good places for clothing and knows where all the thrift stores are. "It doesnt have to be new and expensive to look good honey!" I agree. I cuddle with Asmo the most because he loves touch.
Satan: my boy thirsts for knowledge and I do too. We skill-trade and fan over cats. Unfortunately I'm very allergic, but I appreciate them from afar and draw cats for him to hang in his book-filled room. "Do you want to come to the cat Cafe with me?" Oh Satan. He's his father's son alright, but he's just as much of a shit disturber as Mammon. He teaches me fun curses to use on people but I'm content with just knowing it.
Beel: when I'm tired Beel carries me back home and talks about the science behind calories and energy retention in relation to demonic body types. He enjoys cooking and I love testing recipes on him, but I have to swat him away from eating it before it's done. We do exercises together and buff up together. "I can almost see your six pack, haha".
Belphie: he's my sleepy boy. He can be irrational sometimes but I put a blanket over his head to shake him out of it and he snuggles closer. I play him songs on piano and guitar and sing him to sleep, but then I also end up quite sleepy. He's like a son to me and I lecture him often. I try to keep him and Satan from screwing with Lucifer too much. I'm a double agent in the anti Lucifer league lol
Diavolo: i enjoy it when he regales me with Devildom laws, traditions and customs. He speaks of how the executive branch and legislative branch operates in the context of his kingdom and I suggest to strengthen certain areas of his constitution to bring his vision of equity and interrealm relations to the forefront. I am also a shit disturber and needle him about his crush. "You are asking beyond your means, Beckett. Forgive me if I don't answer." Hm... yes, of course. Sorry.
Barbatos: I learn how to be the most efficient I can be from someone who is the most efficient. He is skilled in everything and I must learn from the best. I'm his best student and I'm a teachers pet so i love to hear it. He's been and seen everything and he is an excellent linguist. He is poetry personified in the every day. "Don't let Solomon ruin you too much." I won't!
Solomon: I use my knowledge of mechanics and trades and recontextualise it to be an artificier and create magical items. He is also one to bring out the shit disturber in me and I have almost become Thirteen just from the incidentally nonsense stuff I make. "Oh that's an interesting effect. I wonder what will happen if I give this to Barbatos". Solomon, dude. Do you want to get murdered. Is that what you're into.
Simeon: he is my sweetest and chillest boy. My bestie to talk about justice and relationality with. When I'm insecure and feel like people don't like me as much as they do, he reassures me and tells me stories of his own relationships. "There is nothing wrong with stepping back. Once you've regained your sense of self, you'll be able to pursue the path of friendship again and people will be ready to receive you."
Luke: he is like my son. I make sure he doesn't get nightmares because he seems to have a hard time acclimating to his demonic environment. He teaches me how to bake so that I can make some cakes that look like real inanimate objects and eat them in front of people, to their shock.
Mephisto: I am like Lucifer 2.0. He doesn't really like me but I have no hard feelings toward him.
Thirteen: my Bae. She's a delight but I have to make sure her shenanigans don't cause too much damage in the area or accidentally kill me. I would date her after Diavolo if I was inclined to do that.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my experience and interpretation of the game from my point of view. Everyone's MC journey is very personal to them and I do not believe there is a wrong way to enjoy the game. Thank you for reading. :)

WEEK 12 - ART ECOSYSTEMS
Art ecosystems provides a foundation and sustains economies. Design ecologies are an interaction, it forms inter-relationships in a network.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to connect with the Image and Art Direction stream. I find photography to be such a beautiful form of art. The depth of a photograph is able to convey a story and impact our emotions. Art Direction involves the harmonious fusion of various artistic elements to create a coherent and visually appealing composition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the projects that caught my attention is called "Liquid Traces". It has inspired me because of its intricate and detailed photography and crafting a story behind images and layout them into a book.
The external entities I am interested in are photographers and art designers. I love Ania et Lucie's minimalistic, yet luxurious with moody lighting and avant garde overtures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design Communication has enabled people to effectively convey complex themes and powerful messages. By using the right mediums, we as designers will in turn amplify the impact of communication. It drives societal changes and emerges as a catalyst for social movements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paper has become a niche due to the rise of digitalization. However, I hope to make an impact to the community that still provides paper needs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Print is still considered to be one of the most alluring forms of art. It engages more of the reader's emotions and it's interesting how different forms of paper each holds their own personalities.
For "Liquid Traces" the simple, monochromatic photographs evoked a sense of nostalgia and yearning. The clean design and thick matte paper were a good medium to express these photographs.

For the critters watching the Livestream, here's a lesson on colours.
This is monochromatic ⬇️

And this is achromatic ⬇️
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A gradient of horizontal lines starting with a very light grey and going down to a dark grey. /End ID]
Monochromatic means something is different shades of the same colour, achromatic is lack of colour. So a black and white movie would be achromatic (unless it is the kind with the sort of umbre tinge that occured sometimes in the beginning the film industry.)
From what I can tell Matt (and by extension, Taliesin) are actually trying to describe the landscape and Ashton as achromatic, not monochromatic. But I could be wrong.
(The lighting is making the battlefield blue, green and purple but I'm fairly certain it is still achromatic.)

'Move over Matt Damon, Andrew Scott is stepping in as Tom Ripley in a new eight-episode TV adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley. Now, we know reboots are everywhere but, come on, it's Andrew Scott! Anthony Minghella helmed the sublime 1999 adaptation to sun-dappled perfection, but who's to say another version on the small screen can't be just as seductive?
Here's everything we know about Ripley so far.
Is there a trailer for Ripley?
Ripley? Ripley.
Netflix's first official teaser for Ripley doesn't give a whole lot away, but then again, neither does its titular character. The moody and monochromatic series is fittingly ominous in its first look, as we see Scott's Tom Ripley seemingly evade justice for his many, many schemes. The trailer also gives us glimpses of some of the show's co-stars, including Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn and John Malkovich. Beyond knowing the story from the book and the 90s film starring Jude Law and Matt Damon, the trailer keeps much of Ripley's plot close to the chest. But, again, that seems quite fitting.
Ahead of the trailer release, Netflix also dropped some new images of Andrew Scott looking suitably pensive and mysterious as the enigmatic Ripley as he broods in black and white across Italy.
When is Ripley coming out?
It's been a long and winding road to get the story of Tom Ripley to the small screen. Having first been announced in 2021 and filming in Italy that same year, it's since bounced around from Showtime to Netflix. At a certain point, Andrew Scott didn't even know when it would come out.
But now, along with its first teaser trailer, Netflix has announced that Ripley will hit screens on 4 April. Springtime is for scamming, after all.
What’s Ripley about?
Based on Patricia Highsmith's novel, The Talented Mr Ripley, the series follows “Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York” who “is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home.” That son is Dickie Greenleaf, and their odd friendship spirals into, among other things, incidents of deceit and murder. All set against the stunning backdrop of the Italian Riviera, of course. No wonder the book has been adapted so many times.
Scott has also hinted that the series will cover some of the subtextual queer themes of Highsmith's text. In a conversation with Ben Whishaw, he said:
“If Tom Ripley was in a gay bar, I’m not sure that he would fit in there. Nor do I think he’s a straight character. I think he’s a queer character, in the sense that he’s very ‘other.’ What’s his relationship with sex, or death, or with family or friends? It’s interesting that a character is the sum of the parts that you don’t have to play.”
Should this show get greenlit for more seasons though, we could potentially see adaptations of the other novels in the Ripley series. The second book, Ripley Under Ground had a film version with Willem Dafoe and Alan Cumming that, apparently, no one saw. And Dennis Hopper and John Malkovich played Tom Ripley in two film adaptations of the third novel, Ripley's Game.
Who stars in Ripley?
First, of course, we have Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley. Considering his past roles in Fleabag and the Oscar-buzzy All of Us Strangers, the actor certainly has the charisma for the part.
He’ll be joined by Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf (the playboy heir Ripley swindles) and Dakota Fanning as Dickie’s girlfriend, Marge Sherwood. And now, thanks to the trailer, we know that John Malkovich – a former Ripley, from 2002's Ripley's Game – will also be joining the monochrome world of the Netflix series.'

Nvm we're back to movie au because I'm feeling soft featuring obviously our fav @oogaboogaspookyman horrid little bastard who is no longer a horrid bastard but is now a well mannered British little bastard beloved we love the difference
Accident
It happened very quickly. An incorrectly secured light fixture crashed down onto set smashing and destroying the background pieces scattering glass everywhere and set alight. The fire spread beginning to burn all the props due to the paint that was used, background pieces set alight in a blink, it crawled up the background canvases and spread across the rafters, the lights cracking fizzling out with loud bangs sending the building into darkness and panic.
A support beam collapsed over a fire escape as employees screamed and panicked they ran around coughing desperate for an exit one of them grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the source but was grabbed by the monochrome Mewtwo who snarled about it being an electrical fire from the light you idiot. May coughed her lungs becoming tight as she looked around with difficulty through the quickly gathering smoke and smog, she was in a panic stuck to the spot. She could see her brother lying on the floor, his head was bleeding. He'd been knocked out as a dark Mewtwo stood over him trying to get the debris off of him.
Screams of panic ringed in her ears making her head throb, why weren't the sprinklers turning on? Oh god were they going to die in here? Burn alive due to inadequate safety measures. There were so many people and pokemon here too many lives that'd be too much death. Coughing screaming yelling panic. More people were collapsing or lying down to escape the smoke for air as it filled up the room heavily weighing down on them all. She couldn't let everyone in here die!
The monochromatic Mewtwo felt the tingling of psychic energy in his fingertips like electricity and before he could yell at May ask what the hell she was doing- he was outside. They were all outside. He spun on the spot levitating slightly looking around in a frenzy, the building crackled and the fire raged on. Everyone was out. No. Not everyone.
"May!"
He yelled quickly flying overhead scanning through the crowd of people that had been teleported out the building he flew down towards her manager, the odd dark hued mewtwo with crystals embedded in her body.
"Wheres May?!"
He half asked half demanded as the Two tended to Matts injuries.
"Is she not out here? I saw her eyes glowing?" She asked shushing Matt who groaned and pushed him down gently when he tried to sit up groggily asking where his sister was.
"If she was out here I wouldn't be asking where she was!"
The frustrated monochrome two snarled at her before looking back at the building in growing horror as he heard a loud creak realizing that she was still inside and hadn't been able to get out.
Without really thinking he flew rapidly at the building, being a ghost had its advantages as he phased through the wall keeping an incorporeal state to avoid the effects of smoke as he looked around frantically. The building was thick with black billowing smoke that rolled in waves blocking his view. He couldn't use psychic to move it as it had nowhere to go and it could shove air into the fire. He frantically scanned around, focusing to sense her aura.
In his altered vision he spotted a faint orange glow that began to flicker and falter weakening and quickly flew towards it, she was on the floor passed out either from smoke inhalation or exhaustion from teleporting that many people out of a building with her already weak powers or both. He became corporeal and coughed against the smoke and the horrible heat as he wrapped his arms under hers to haul her up to carry her.
"I'm not letting you die here you blithering idiot,"
He chastised as he pulled her up attempting to hold her and realizing she was heavy as dead weight and the growing smoke in his lungs was weakening his strength, not to mention the flames were creeping in starting to stretch out and lick at his tail and legs in a way that would likely burn. He snorted frustrated, he pulled her up, arms wrapping around her waist as she made a soft mumble noise.
He realized that flames were closing in, his eyes were watering from smoke and heat as he coughed, he could become ghostly while he had the strength but then he wouldn't be able to interact with her, he could save himself but he wouldn't! He wouldn't just let her die here and save his own skin. He hissed as a flame splashed against him snarling towards it before coughing, breathing becoming harder. He heard another long drawn out creak, and a snap, and a fall. Another support beam came falling down right on top of them, he dropped to a crouch holding his body over hers desperate to summon any strength left into a barrier or any kind of protection.
Another crash could be heard from the building, it took multiple staff members and Pokemon to hold back Matt and Darkness, Matt screamed and yelled profanities at them telling, no, demanding them to let him go because his sister was in there. Darkness also shouted at them to see sense that both the mewtwo in that building inch closer to death every second they waste stopping them. They both went quiet as a large flame burst out from the roof of the building with a loud BOOM.
Matt crumbled in the grip of the people restraining him, falling to his knees as he began to sob in despair and pain. Darkness could only stare forward at the raging flames and thick smoke.
It took hours for the fire department to put the flames out, they were aggressive and unrelenting and the thick smoke meant the trained personnel needed to swap out to a safe distance to regain their breath. When the fire finally dimmed to a manageable flicker it was growing dark, the fire had started in the afternoon…
Search and rescue began their job and once more Darkness was restrained, she wasn't trained like they were, they knew how to move rubble without causing it to collapse elsewhere potentially crushing any survivors, she did not. She could only watch in frustration as they slowly methodically did their job. She'd refused care due to her wounds already healing from the synergy energy, Matt had to be given light sedatives for his aggression so he was more, agreeable, about being taken away to be seen for his head injury and assorted burns.
A Gurdurr and Medicham worked together, the Medicham scanning the surroundings with psychic energy to get a mental blueprint of the chaos and carefully instructing Gurdurr on which parts to lift to safely deconstruct the wreckage without causing it to collapse. The Gurdurr carefully threw aside a large ceiling concrete slab before vocalizing to the Medicham. A swirling white and black dome like shape sat planted into the ground with debris piled on top of it. The Medicham vocalized to the other pairs to come help as they began to remove the debris, the human supervisors coming along too, as the broken building was removed the dome seemed to reduce in opacity becoming semi see through.
Inside May and the monochromatic Mewtwo clung to one another desperately, his eyes were shut with dark psychic energy pouring out from the sides of his closed eyes waving and flowing out. May's eyes were wide open but unseeing, completely whitened over and glowing faintly with her psychic energy. Neither of them seemed aware of the situation both just clinging as the dark and white psychic energy protecting them both swirled around them both desperately wanting to protect the other, forming one rather indestructible long lasting protect.
When the last piece of debris was safely removed one of the human search and rescue members gently knocked their knuckles against the very dense protect dome, "can you two hear us?" May's eyes faltered into half lids her psychic energy sparking and fading from her eyes and the dome, she blinked slowly and blinked again before slumping completely limp in the monochrome ones arms as her grip slipped from him, his eyes opened in a start the dark psychic energy overflowing from his eyes darkening the dome over as he snarled before he blinked realizing that it was help. His psychic energy gently blew away in a breeze before he shivered at the cold.
The psychic search and rescue members lifted May's unconscious body onto a stretcher to be taken to an ambulance while the people attempted to look the monochromatic one over. He shoved them away flying up and wobbling slightly in tiredness but followed them into the ambulance taking up the relative seat in the ambulance next to May as they began trying to help her much to Darkness' frustration at the audacity. He slapped away attempts to look him over, snarling at the ambulance worker to focus on the unconscious one, not him.
——————————————————————
The monochrome ones' leg bounced irritated and frustrated as he sat in a chair next to the orange hued Mewtwos hospital bed. He'd been forcefully seen to, so his wounds were bandaged up and he'd been given oxygen and instructions to not go near lung irritants and just to take cough drops for his throat and rest and get sleep. However sleep he would not do, he'd been up all night besides her having left his own bed watching over her in her room, her smoke inhalation had been worse than his as was her burns, she had a breathing mask on to help ensure she got enough oxygen which also acted as a filter that helped remove the lingering smoke in her lungs with each exhale. He'd dragged a night nurse into the room in a panic when he noticed her condition becoming worse, her over exhaustion leading to sickness and a fever so she'd been put on some drip fluids too due to how weakened she was from over exerting herself with her powers.
He'd paced the room multiple times, aggressively straightening the curtains to ensure no moonlight crept in and disturbed her, made sure the blanket properly covered her and tucked her in, fluffed her cushion, checked her medical sheet and that she was hooked up properly multiple times. As of right now he was gently holding her wrist, his fingers pressing faintly to feel her pulse, just to be sure the machines were correct that's all. He sighed softly hanging his head as his leg bounced, the TV in the room mumbled nonsense that he couldn't make out as he was actively ignoring it, especially as it was talking about the fire, his fingers moved down her wrist brushing over her palm hesitantly choosing to rest his two main fingers in her palm pressing them against her hand and squeezing with his thumb at the back of her hand, an unsure hand squeeze without committing to a full hand hold.
He was beginning to grow frustrated ready to aggressively sort her room out again when her thumb twitched and the best it could, squeezed his fingers against her palm. He looked up to see her eyes barely open as if her eyelids were incredibly heavy which they probably were for her.
"Who's getting sued…?" Her voice was incredibly small and croaked before she coughed realizing she definitely shouldn't have spoken. He panicked slightly moving his hand and getting a glass of water for her saying gently,
"hey hey easy,"
He carefully adjusted her bed position so it slowly lifted her into a slanted sitting position not perfectly upright just so she'd still be resting and comfortable, he carefully helped pull back the breathing mask and held the glass to her lips with psychic encouraging her to take small sips less she start coughing again, refusing to move his hand from where it gently half held hers.
When she'd drank about half he put it down and replaced the mask as she breathed and smiled at him, her hand shifted and squeezed his properly holding it, "if you wanted to hold hands you could've asked, didn't need to burn a building down." She made a soft laugh as she squeezed his hand again, her usual cheery joking self despite what happened.
His mouth opened slightly and shut in surprise both at the fact they were now just squeezing each others hands and that was embarrassing and also the accusation though empty.
"I'll burn this whole goddamn building down,"
He chuntered unhappily before pausing and looking back at May.
"Hold on, no, you do not get to get out of this so easy by joking around, what the hell were you thinking?! You could've died?! Why didn't you teleport yourself out with everybody else!"
Admittedly his tone was a lot harsher than he'd meant it to be as May stared at him in surprise before her eyes looked away from him.
"I'm, sorry, I wasn't really, thinking about saving me, just that I couldn't let everyone else die. And even then you still got hurt," her voice was soft and guilty.
The monochrome one stared at her a bit before looking away he went to open his mouth to speak.
"Wait, where's Matt? Is he okay?! I saw his head bleeding? Did he get help?!" May tried to sit herself up and he gently but firmly pushed her back down.
"Your brother is fine he's in another room getting spoiled by some male nurses, now would you STOP thinking about everybody else and fucking think about yourself in this?! You have horrid burns, you inhaled so much smoke and you got a feverish sickness because your body was so weak and overworked! What if I hadn't found you or realized you weren't outside with us?! There's a very real chance you could've died in that fire! I could've- we. We could have lost you. And you have a lot of people who care about you. So why don't you?"
May gripped the bed sheets uncomfortably as she sat there again avoiding his gaze as his eyes softened and he frowned at her. She shrugged uncomfortably and he could see her struggling for the words and the anxiety prickling inside her. He gently squeezed her hand waiting to give her a fair chance to answer.
"....I just don't find that there's much to care about.." Her voice was riddled with guilt as she struggled, "I know, well just, I know compared to a lot of others that I'm, different." She moved her spare hand vaguely, "and, that, made it hard to connect to people, and as well I'm weak, I mean a mewtwo who can't even use her powers properly for herself, pft. Don't have much going for me overall. I know I'm, loud and optimistic and seem confident and sure but, I don't really like myself. Not really. I don't know. Maybe some horrid self pitying self obsessed part of myself believed I didn't really deserve to be saved like everyone else so that's why I wasn't teleported out too, and I guess maybe that self absorbed part of me went well look at that now we can't do anything because you used up all your strength and you're going to let yourself die because you're so pitiful and weak just to what make a point." She shrugged awkwardly, grabbing at her shoulder, "you got hurt because overall I'm a bad person, too obsessed with myself, I mean I'm a lot luckier than other people. I'm much better off than other people and yet here I am feeling sorry for myself and not liking myself. How selfish is that?" She squeezed her own shoulder to self soothe as the guilt began to creep in. "God I'm sorry, I shouldn't have dumped all that on you, here I am again being the biggest selfish, no, no I'm sorry I'm, spiralling you don't need to hear me insult myself because that just manipulates you into having to pity me and tell me it's fine and it's okay when it's not an-"
He moved the mask using his free hand to put a finger on her lips to stop her spiral rambling as he frowned at her softly.
"I don't think you're selfish, I don't think you're physically capable of being selfish, mostly because of your lack of healthy boundaries, but also because you're a good person and sharing and being kind is part of your nature. You're not a bad person for being unhappy even if you think you should be. You're more complex than just the happy May you always are with people."
He moved his finger but pointed threateningly when she opened her mouth.
"No shut up, I'm still talking. You know how I know that you're a good person even when that voice of doubt tells you you're wrong? Do you remember how we first met?"
May blinked but nodded, opening her mouth before being shushed again.
"Shut."
She smiled playfully, closing her mouth to listen.
"You came right up to me when I was lurking in the background with your drink and two brownies from the food table and you smiled at me and introduced yourself right to me, you said you were absolutely over the moon to meet and be working with me, that you'd seen my other shows upon learning we'd be coworkers and that you thought I was really talented and amazing. I know back then I just stared at you as you offered my one of the brownies you'd taken saying you got me one since I was so far away, you know why I was staring? Because you were the first person I've ever worked with to walk right up to me and introduce themselves with unfaltering kindness and warmth."
He glanced away as he spoke.
"The reason I was so far away is because a lot of the time everyone on set that I'm working with is absolutely terrified of me, which I get, it's the eyes I think. But you didn't seem afraid at all."
He looked back at her.
"You have probably brightened so many peoples' days by existing, and I know that voice probably tells you that you're different or weak or secretly evil or whatever insults and feelings you've internalized, but you bring out so much kindness to everyone no matter what."
May squeezed his hand unsure of how to even respond, mouth opening and closing as she struggled. His other hand came to hold hers squeezing her one hand with both of his.
"When you're better, I think we should look into some therapy for you because if you couldn't teleport out because a part of you believes you didn't deserve to be okay then I am really deeply concerned about that because I never want you in that situation again okay?"
May nodded softly as he squeezed her hands again softly confirming an "okay." He smiled softly at her as he gently put his forehead to her hand that he still held.
"You're a big sweetheart ya know, even if you are a horrid drink stealer" May softly spoke and he chuckled knowing she was deflecting slightly now with humor as she usually did from heavier topics but clearly speaking fondly of him.
"Hmm. Just don't go telling anybody."
"I won't." She squeezed his hands the best she could. "I think you're real great too you know, I'm glad you're in my life you do make it better." And he smiled softly to himself.

My favorite makeup products for warm toned brown skin
I love makeup a lot, it's an amazing form of self expression that I, and many others adore. However; it can be hard to find shades that show up on your skin when most influencers promoting these products have fair skin. Today, I'll be posting about some of my favorite products that work for me as a brown person with oily skin :)
*I've purchased these with all of my own money or have received them as gifts from family members. I'm not affiliated with any of these brands bc nobody knows who i am imn just a little lesbian who likes to paint their face LMAO
R.E.M. Beauty Lip & cheek stick in opening night - $18 USD
Tumblr media
I love this because it blends out nicely and can be used for a nice monochromatic look. It's a little bit on the pricier side though, but I feel like it's worth the price.
Colourpop Sonic Bloom Palette - $18 USD
Tumblr media
This was my first eyeshadow palette and honestly, one of my favorites. It has a lot of beautiful warm toned shadows that are great for medium warm skin. I will say that the shades Lunar Disco and Cosmic don't show up on me as well though, as they're too close to my skin tone or barely lighter but I've found use for them as bases to go over my primer if I want a smoother, matte look.
Morphe x Pony Constellation Sky Artistry Palette - $36 USD
Tumblr media
Okay, I know what you're probably thinking. These shades are going to be ashy, aren't they? Not in my experience. I can't speak for Morphe as a brand in general, since this is my only palette by them, but I found the shades in here to be smooth and blendable. The lighter shades are very pigmented, and show up on my skin, and work great as inner corner highlights. I was also really surprised that the shade Ddalgi didn't look ashy on me as a blush. I love that you can create more colorful looks or neutral looks, this palette really was designed as an all in one, and Pony killed it on the shades in here. The only negative thing I can really say about this palette is that the shades Inner, Ruby, and Glistening may get harder in the pan, preventing you from picking up the pigment easily. I usually solve this by gently scraping the top of my shadow to get the powder beneath it.
Juvia's Place The Festival Liquid Lipstick in Dudu - $12 USD
Tumblr media
This is an AMAZINGLY pigmented black lipstick. I love Juvia's place so much, all of their products are super pigmented and they have a lot of sales, making it relatively approachable for someone new to makeup. One swipe gives me all the pigment I need. My only complaint is that it isn't transfer proof, but I think it's worth it for the sheer amount of color packed into this little tube of goth magic.
Elf CC Camo Cream - $15 USD
Tumblr media
I personally use the shade Tan 245 N, and I think it's a great price, lovely coverage, and applies really smoothly on my skin. As a disclaimer though, I prefer more sheer foundations, so this may be on the lighter coverage side.
Colourpop Dream Big Palette Vault - $74 USD
Tumblr media
I received this as a Christmas gift one year and honestly, it is one of my favorite things ever. The shadows are pigmented and all of the palettes have an attached mirror. I will say though that if you don't have any nude shades yet, buy those before this. This set lacks pinks and nude shades, which may be fine for you but I find myself using these as a compliment to my Blush Crush Palette ($14 USD) and Send Nudes Palette ($14 USD) which are also by Colourpop.
e.l.f. Hydrating Core Lip Shine in Ecstatic - $7
Tumblr media
Not only is this a dupe for Clinique's Black Honey, it's super hydrating, affordable, and cute.
I'll probably edit this list as time goes on, but for now here are some of my favorite products!! (If any brands see this pls sponsor me im a poor little college student)

Hey guys,
We all know I am a massive fan of Huda Beauty eyeshadows, especially the 9 pan palettes. They are always really pigmented palettes with gorgeous colour stories. Looking at my collection I always lean towards the bright or pinky toned palettes but I wanted to add something more darker to my collection. Today we are chatting about the Huda Wild Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette - Jaguar .
I have seen this palette so many times walking through Boots or Selfridges but at the time I didn't really wear these colours. However recently I have been enjoying a more smokey vibe and compared to my collection this palette is the most unique. This palette has the perfect balance of soft glam shades all the way to deep smokey eyes. The Jaguar palette features the most beautiful monochromatic purples, a sparkly grey, a speckled bronze & a holy grail black, all the shades you need for a glam look. Like other Huda Beauty palettes you get a mix of mattes, metallics and a new multi-reflective shade.
I adore this palette and honestly slightly mad at myself it took me this long to pick up. When it comes to luxury palettes I would say Huda Beauty palettes are the best value for money since you get 9 shades for £27.00 instead of 4 for £43.00. She has a whole range of colours so I'm pretty confident everyone can find a palette that suits them. Since I'm quiet fair this palette would look quite intense on me but now we've hit the autumnal season I am loving the smokey vibe.
If you want to see a tutorial with this palette let me know in the replies and I have linked the palette above if you want to check it out yourself.
Lots of love

Transform Your Ensuite: Aesthetic Home Renovation Ideas
Ensuite bathrooms have become a symbol of luxury and convenience in modern homes. These private sanctuaries offer a perfect blend of functionality and comfort, allowing homeowners to indulge in spa-like experiences without stepping out of their bedrooms. If you're planning to renovate your bathroom ideas ensuite, it's essential to focus on aesthetics as well as practicality. Here are some inspired ideas to transform your ensuite into a stylish retreat.
Embrace Minimalism with a Monochromatic Palette Minimalism is a timeless trend that creates a serene and uncluttered space. Opt for a monochromatic color scheme, such as shades of white, gray, or beige. This approach not only makes the bathroom look spacious but also provides a clean and elegant appearance. Use different textures like marble tiles, matte finishes, and subtle patterns to add depth and interest without overwhelming the space.
Tips: Choose large tiles to reduce grout lines and create a seamless look. Incorporate built-in storage to keep surfaces clutter-free. Select sleek, modern fixtures in matching tones.
Indulge in Luxury with High-End Materials Nothing speaks luxury like high-quality materials. Consider incorporating natural stones like marble or granite for your countertops and flooring. These materials not only look stunning but also add value to your home. Pair them with high-end fixtures in brushed gold or matte black for a sophisticated contrast.
Tips: Use a statement piece, such as a freestanding bathtub or a custom vanity, to create a focal point. Add underfloor heating for a touch of opulence and comfort. Install a rain showerhead for a spa-like experience.
Create a Spa-Like Atmosphere with Earthy Tones Earthy tones and natural materials can turn your ensuite into a tranquil spa retreat. Think warm wood finishes, stone accents, and a palette of greens and browns. These elements bring a sense of calm and relaxation, making your bathroom a perfect place to unwind after a long day.
Tips: Incorporate plants to enhance the natural feel and improve air quality. Use bamboo or teak accessories to complement the earthy tones. Consider a pebble-tiled shower floor for a tactile, grounding experience.
Add a Touch of Glamour with Statement Lighting Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of your ensuite bathroom. Chandeliers, pendant lights, or wall sconces can add a touch of glamour and make the space feel more inviting. Layered lighting, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, ensures that your bathroom is both functional and beautiful.
Tips: Use dimmable lights to adjust the ambiance according to your mood. Position lights around mirrors to eliminate shadows and provide optimal illumination for grooming tasks. Choose fixtures that complement the overall design theme of your bathroom.
Maximize Space with Smart Storage Solutions An ensuite bathroom should be a place of relaxation, not clutter. Incorporate smart storage solutions to keep your essentials organized and out of sight. Floating vanities, built-in shelves, and recessed niches are excellent ways to maximize space without compromising on style.
Tips: Opt for mirrored cabinets to add storage and make the space appear larger. Use baskets and decorative boxes to store toiletries neatly. Install hooks and towel racks to keep towels and robes within easy reach.
Infuse Personality with Custom Details Personalize your ensuite by adding custom details that reflect your style. Whether it's a unique tile pattern, a custom vanity, or personalized artwork, these touches make your bathroom truly yours. Don't be afraid to mix and match styles and materials to create a space that feels both cohesive and uniquely you.
Tips: Create an accent wall with patterned tiles or a bold color. Add a custom mirror frame to enhance your vanity area. Incorporate your favorite artwork or photographs for a personal touch. What is the best htv or other vinly to use on athletic shoes?
Tumblr media
What is the best htv or other vinly to use on athletic shoes? When it comes to applying heat transfer vinyl (HTV) or other vinyl to athletic shoes, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Let’s dive into the details:
What Does TD Mean in Shoes? 2024
What is the best htv or other vinly to use on athletic shoes?
- Choosing the Right Vinyl: - Siser Easyweed HTV: This is a popular and budget-friendly option. It works well on various fabrics, including athletic wear. However, it may not have the same stretchability as some other options. - Premium Heat Transfer Vinyl from Expressions Vinyl: This vinyl is specifically designed for athletic apparel. Here’s why it’s a great choice: - Super Stretchability: Athletic shoes need to flex and move with your feet. The premium vinyl offers excellent stretchability without cracking or peeling. - Ultra-Matte Finish: Unlike glossy finishes, the ultra-matte finish of this vinyl blends seamlessly with the fabric, creating a professional look. - Soft and Thin Texture: It almost melts into the fabric, ensuring there’s no stiffness or bulk. - Application: Use a heat press or an iron (adjust the temperature according to the fabric type) to apply the vinyl. Make sure to protect the fabric with a Teflon sheet during pressing. - Application Tips: - Preparation: Clean the shoe surface thoroughly before applying the vinyl. - Design: Choose or create your design. Glitter HTV tends to work well for shoe designs. - Weeding: Weed out the excess vinyl carefully. - Placement: Position the design where you want it on the shoe. - Pressing: Use a heat press or iron to apply the vinyl. Follow the recommended temperature and time settings. - Cooling: Allow the design to cool completely before peeling off the carrier sheet. - Test First: Always test a small area before applying the vinyl to the entire shoe. - Other Considerations: - Shoe Material: Different shoe materials (canvas, leather, synthetic fabrics) may require slight adjustments in temperature and pressure. - Athletic Shoes vs. Casual Shoes: While the premium vinyl works well for athletic shoes, consider other options (such as holographic or patterned vinyl) for casual shoes. - Durability: The right vinyl should withstand wear, washing, and stretching without losing its integrity.
Recommended any specific shoe designs.
Certainly! Here are some creative and eye-catching shoe design ideas that you can consider applying using HTV or other vinyl: - Galaxy-Inspired Shoes: - Create a cosmic design with swirling galaxies, stars, and planets. Use a mix of blues, purples, and blacks to mimic the vastness of space. Add glitter accents for extra sparkle. - Floral Patterns: - Flowers are always in style! Design delicate floral patterns on the sides or toes of your shoes. Opt for bright colors for a springtime feel or go monochromatic for elegance. - Geometric Shapes: - Use triangles, hexagons, or other geometric shapes to create a modern and abstract design. Arrange them in a visually pleasing way across the shoe. - Animal Prints: - Leopard spots, zebra stripes, or snake scales—animal prints add a wild touch. Choose vinyl colors that contrast well with the base shoe color. - Gradient Ombre: - Blend two or more colors seamlessly from toe to heel. Ombre effects look stunning on sneakers. Consider shades like teal to navy or pink to purple. - Minimalist Lines: - Sometimes less is more. Create simple lines, stripes, or zigzags for a clean and contemporary look. Use metallic vinyl for added sophistication. - Tribal or Aztec Patterns: - Draw inspiration from indigenous art. Bold lines, triangles, and repeating patterns can make your shoes stand out. - Sports-Inspired Logos: - If you’re customizing athletic shoes, consider adding sports team logos, basketballs, soccer balls, or tennis rackets. Represent your favorite team! - Abstract Splatters: - Channel your inner Jackson Pollock! Splatter paint designs give a fun and artsy vibe. Use neon colors for an extra pop. - Personalized Monograms: - Add your initials or a short word (like “RUN” or “LOVE”) to the heel or tongue of the shoe. Elegant fonts work well here.
Recommend any specific color combinations.
Certainly! Color combinations can significantly impact the overall look of your customized shoes. Here are some stylish and harmonious color pairings to consider: - Classic Black and White: - You can’t go wrong with this timeless combination. Use black vinyl for the base design and white for accents or vice versa. It’s sleek, versatile, and always in style. - Navy Blue and Gold: - Navy blue represents stability, while gold adds a touch of luxury. Combine these colors for a sophisticated look. Consider using gold vinyl for logos or intricate details. - Mint Green and Coral: - Fresh and vibrant, mint green pairs beautifully with coral. Use mint as the base color and add coral accents or vice versa. Perfect for spring and summer vibes. - Gray and Blush Pink: - Gray is neutral and complements almost any color. Pair it with soft blush pink for an elegant and feminine touch. Think about floral or lace-inspired designs. - Turquoise and Yellow: - Turquoise evokes tropical vibes, and yellow adds a sunny pop. These colors work well for beach-themed or vacation-inspired shoe designs. - Red and Black: - Bold and striking, red and black create a powerful contrast. Use red vinyl for eye-catching logos or patterns against a black shoe background. - Purple and Silver: - Purple symbolizes creativity and spirituality. Pair it with silver for a magical effect. Geometric patterns or mandalas in these colors can look stunning. - Teal and Coral: - Teal (a mix of blue and green) pairs beautifully with coral. It’s refreshing and energetic. Consider a gradient effect or abstract waves using these colors. - Monochromatic Gradients: - Choose a single color (e.g., shades of blue) and create a gradient effect from light to dark. It adds depth and interest to your design. - Rainbow Spectrum: - Feeling adventurous? Incorporate all the colors of the rainbow into your design. Use small vinyl pieces to create a mosaic effect. What is the best htv or other vinly to use on athletic shoes? Remember to adapt these designs to the shape and size of your shoes. And don’t forget to share your finished creations—they’re sure to turn heads! 🎨👟 Read the full article

Tumblr media
Interior design for Kitchen, Besides serving as a place for cooking, the kitchen interior design serves as a gathering place in our homes, setting the stage for cherished memories and daily interactions. With the rise of modern interior design trends, turning your kitchen into a stylish yet functional oasis has never been easier! We’ll explore some of the latest kitchen interior design ideas to elevate your culinary experience while adding sophistication to your living space.
Minimalism Meets Functionality for Interior Design for Kitchen
The minimalist style dominates contemporary kitchen design, emphasizing simplicity, clean lines, and Functionality. Streamlined cabinetry and open shelving create a clutter-free atmosphere that accentuates the beauty of natural materials. For instance, incorporating wooden elements in minimalistic settings can add warmth and character.
Monochromatic Color Schemes for Interior Design for Kitchen
Monochrome colour schemes often dominate kitchen interiors, which provide a timeless aesthetic that complements many styles. Grayscale tones and black-and-white palettes create sophisticated looks easily coordinated with existing decor. By pairing matte black hardware with crisp white cabinets or grey walls with polished chrome fixtures, you can add depth and texture to any space.
Natural Materials and Textures for Interior Design for Kitchen
A warm and inviting environment can be created by incorporating organic materials and textures. Surfaces made of wood, stone tiles, and rattan accessories add visual interest and tactile appeal to any kitchen setting. Bring the outdoors in with a wooden island or bar top, terracotta floor tiles, or woven pendant lights above your dining table.
Statement Lighting Fixtures Interior Design for Kitchen
Lighting profoundly affects the ambience of any room, and kitchens are no exception. A statement lighting fixture, like an oversized pendant or dramatic chandelier, creates a focal point that draws attention away from less appealing areas. Open Shelves and Display Cabinets. Interior Design for Kitchen
Interior design for Kitchens become more personal when homeowners display their favourite dishware, cookbooks, and décor items. A room with these features won’t appear sterile since these decorative elements will break up the large expanses of wall space. Mixed Metal Finishes Interior Design for Kitchen
Brass, copper, nickel, and stainless steel metal finishes enrich kitchen interiors. Adding layers of metal to otherwise monotonous spaces creates depth and dimension. Make sure metallic hues are balanced to prevent the eye from being overwhelmed. Storage Solutions that Make Sense Most homeowners, especially those with limited square footage, are concerned about maximizing storage capacity. Organizing and navigating the kitchen is easier and more accessible when intelligent storage solutions, such as pull-out pantries and sliding corner units, are integrated into kitchen layouts.
Biophilia and Greenery Interior Design for Kitchen
Healthy, happier lifestyles are influenced by biophilic design, which integrates natural elements into indoor spaces. Create a green wall in your kitchen by mounting vertical gardens, placing potted plants on windowsills, or mounting vertical gardens. Any room can benefit from plants because they purify the air, reduce stress, and add a sense of life. Islands with multifunctionality There are multiple uses for kitchen islands, such as prep stations, breakfast bars, and seating areas. The islands can be customized to accommodate diverse needs and preferences, including sinks, stovetops, wine coolers, and charging ports. Design your kitchen island to suit your lifestyle needs if you want to make the most of it.
Artful Backsplashes Interior Design for Kitchen
A backsplash is not just a useful feature; it’s also an artistic expression that reflects your personality and taste. Kitchen backsplash designs range from geometric patterns to handcrafted mosaics. Let your imagination run wild as you choose a material and pattern that suits your style! With these modern interior design trends, you can create a stunning kitchen that serves practical and aesthetic needs. Chic and Sleek Retreats: Navigating Modern Trends in Kitchen Design
Introduction
The kitchen, once a utilitarian space tucked away in the back of the house, has evolved into a focal point of modern homes. As lifestyles change and social dynamics shift, the kitchen has become a versatile space that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal. In this exploration of modern kitchen design, we delve into the chic and sleek retreats that reflect contemporary trends, balancing style and practicality for a truly remarkable culinary experience.
Embracing Minimalism: Streamlined Aesthetics
Less is More
In the realm of modern kitchen design, minimalism reigns supreme. Clean lines, uncluttered surfaces, and a simple color palette characterize this trend. Minimalist kitchens focus on functionality and efficiency while maintaining an air of sophistication. Sleek cabinets with hidden handles, smooth countertops, and integrated appliances contribute to the seamless and unobtrusive look of a minimalist kitchen.
Monochromatic Magic
Monochromatic color schemes are a hallmark of modern kitchen design. Whites, grays, and blacks dominate the palette, creating a sense of unity and elegance. To add depth, subtle variations in shades and textures are employed. Monochromatic kitchens not only exude a timeless appeal but also make the space feel larger and more open.
Intelligent Design: Smart and Efficient Spaces
Smart Appliances
Modern kitchens are witnessing the rise of smart appliances that blend seamlessly into the overall design. From intelligent refrigerators with touchscreens to voice-activated assistants integrated into ovens, technology is enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of kitchen spaces. These smart features not only simplify daily tasks but also contribute to the overall modern aesthetic.
Efficient Storage Solutions
In contemporary kitchen design, optimizing storage is a key consideration. Cabinets are designed with organizational features such as pull-out trays, deep drawers, and hidden compartments. The aim is to keep the kitchen looking tidy and uncluttered, providing designated spaces for every utensil and kitchen gadget.
Aesthetic Innovations: Mixing Materials and Textures
Contrasting Elements
Modern kitchens often feature a mix of materials to add visual interest. Contrasting textures, such as combining sleek stainless steel appliances with warm wooden cabinets or matte finishes with glossy surfaces, create a dynamic and sophisticated look. The juxtaposition of different elements adds depth and character to the kitchen space.
Bold Statements with Backsplashes
Backsplashes have evolved from mere functional elements to stylish focal points in modern kitchens. Bold patterns, textured tiles, or even full-wall backsplashes in vibrant colors contribute to the overall aesthetic. This trend allows homeowners to infuse personality into the kitchen while maintaining a sleek and contemporary vibe.
Open and Airy: Creating Spacious Environments
Open Shelving
Say goodbye to traditional closed cabinets and hello to open shelving. This design trend not only enhances the feeling of openness but also provides an opportunity to display stylish dishware and accessories. Open shelving encourages a curated and organized look, with items on display becoming a part of the kitchen's decor.
Kitchen Islands as Social Hubs
Kitchen islands have become more than just extra counter space; they now serve as central social hubs. With integrated seating, islands encourage gatherings, conversations, and shared cooking experiences. Choosing a statement countertop material for the island can further elevate the kitchen's aesthetic appeal.
Nature-inspired Elegance: Bringing the Outdoors In
Natural Materials
Modern kitchen designs often incorporate natural materials to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. From wooden cabinets and stone countertops to bamboo flooring, these materials bring a touch of nature indoors. The use of natural elements adds an organic and timeless quality to the modern kitchen.
Indoor Herb Gardens
Bringing nature into the kitchen goes beyond materials; it extends to incorporating greenery. Indoor herb gardens have become a popular feature, not only for their practicality but also for their ability to infuse the space with freshness and a connection to nature.
Illuminating Elegance: Stylish Lighting Fixtures
Pendant Lights
Gone are the days of generic overhead lighting. Modern kitchens embrace pendant lights as both functional and decorative elements. Hanging above kitchen islands or dining areas, pendant lights add a touch of sophistication and can serve as focal points in the room.
Under-Cabinet Lighting
Strategically placed under-cabinet lighting has become a staple in modern kitchens. This not only enhances visibility on countertops but also adds a subtle and stylish glow. LED strips or puck lights are popular choices for achieving this contemporary lighting effect.
Personalization and Expression: Tailoring the Kitchen to You
Customization and Personal Touches
While adhering to modern design principles, homeowners are increasingly seeking ways to infuse their personality into the kitchen. Customization options, whether in the form of bespoke cabinetry, unique hardware, or personalized decor, allow individuals to create a kitchen that feels uniquely theirs.
Statement Appliances
Appliances are no longer confined to neutral tones. Statement appliances in bold colors or unique finishes are gaining popularity. Whether it's a vibrant red refrigerator or a sleek black matte oven, these appliances serve as artistic elements that contribute to the overall aesthetic.
Sustainable Chic: Eco-Friendly Design Choices
Energy-Efficient Appliances
Sustainability is a growing concern, even in kitchen design. Energy-efficient appliances with eco-friendly features have become a staple. From induction cooktops to energy-saving refrigerators, homeowners are making choices that align with both modern aesthetics and environmental consciousness.
Recycled and Recyclable Materials
Choosing materials that are recycled or recyclable is a sustainable approach in modern kitchen design. Cabinets made from reclaimed wood or countertops crafted from recycled glass contribute to an eco-friendly and chic kitchen.
Conclusion: Creating Timeless Modern Kitchens
In the dynamic landscape of modern kitchen design, the emphasis is on creating spaces that are not only visually stunning but also highly functional. The chic and sleek retreats we explore are a reflection of the current trends that prioritize efficiency, aesthetics, and personal expression. As homeowners navigate the choices available in the realm of modern kitchens, the key is to strike a balance that aligns with individual preferences while embracing the timeless allure of contemporary design. Whether it's the subtle elegance of a minimalist kitchen or the bold statements made through contrasting elements, the modern kitchen remains a space of innovation, style, and enduring sophistication.

'"The Talented Mr. Ripley" is undeniably talented, but it's his knack for ingeniously evading the crimes he commits that truly sets him apart. Netflix's recent series "Ripley," which premiered in April, masterfully highlights this aspect. Just when you believe he's finally cornered, Mr. Ripley astounds with his ability to slip through the cracks, leaving viewers in awe of his cunning.
The character of Tom Ripley, whom we got to know better thanks to Anthony Minghella's 1999 movie with Matt Damon as Tom Ripley, is taken from Patricia Highsmith's novel of the same name "The Talented Mr. Ripley," first published in 1955. Set primarily in the 1950s, the story follows Tom Ripley, a complex and morally ambiguous character struggling to find his place in the world. We know him as a talented imposter capable of assuming various identities with ease. When allowed to travel to Italy to persuade a wealthy businessman's son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return to his country, the U.S., he seizes the chance to build a new character.
As Tom becomes entangled in Dickie's world of privilege and sophistication, he becomes increasingly obsessed with him. He yearns for Dickie's lifestyle, his charm, and also a bit of his girlfriend. However, Tom's admiration soon turns into envy and resentment as he realizes he can never truly be Dickie. That drives him crazy, making him self-delusional, and a murderer.
In this new remake that came 25 years later, Andrew Scott portrays Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn plays Dickie, and Dakota Fanning takes on the role of Marge Sherwood in Netflix's limited series "Ripley." It is an arthouse production of clear auteurism. Created, written and directed by Steven Zaillian, known for "Schindler’s List" and "The Night Of," the eight-episode "Ripley" offers a grotesque kind of "la dolce vita," starting in a small seaside picturesque village on the Amalfi Coast and progressing through Naples, Rome, Palermo and Venice, all portrayed as dull, restless and unsettling.
In this context, Zaillian's take on the novel promises many innovations in cinematography, as a completely fresh execution. Firstly, the decision to shoot the series entirely in black and white has a significant impact, depicting Tom Ripley's dark world and his journey toward becoming a murderer. Additionally, the bold choice to shoot in black and white in a landscape as colorful as Italy is quite daring. Of course, this risk pays off.
For this, comparing this series to the 1999-made "The Talented Mr. Ripley" would be wrong. Zaillian has strictly adhered to the book, trying to capture its dark atmosphere. As he mentioned in an interview, seeing the cover of Highsmith's book in black and white inspired him. Therefore, we can say it's a more faithful adaptation of the book. However, those who haven't read the book may have some basic knowledge of the character Tom Ripley, portrayed by Matt Damon in the more well-known film version. But Zaillian's production suggests much more than that. Perhaps the episodes are longer than necessary, but throughout the series, the character's evolution, along with the cinematography, symbols, and the enchanting operas performed by Enrico Caruso is a kind of chilling feast that most we see in the "Last Supper."
Thematic depths
One of the major thematic supports in the series is known for his dramatic storytelling and "chiaroscuro," the use of strong contrasts between light and dark in art, in the works of Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. After Dickie Greenleaf introduces Tom Ripley to Caravaggio's works that are located in the country's various chapels, viewers inevitably begin to establish a connection between Ripley and Caravaggio, as Ripley perceives and clumsily executes everything he's influenced by in its purest form. Caravaggio's own life, being brought to trial 11 times and spending the rest of his life as a fugitive after killing a man in 1606, collapsing and dying in the summer of 1610 while traveling back to Rome to seek a pardon from the pope, also sends many symbolic messages about Ripley's character – a foreshadowing. Also, At the same time, the screen transitions from the actor who portrayed Caravaggio in the series to Ripley also confirm this.
On the other hand, the other most frequently seen motifs in the series are the top-down panoramic shots of inside-building staircases. While watching the series, you can see many staircase scenes, with some minutes devoted to these structures. These scenes not only symbolize the architectural structures but also represent Ripley's rise and, although not seen in the series, ultimate downfall.
Perhaps one of the most important thematic support is the titles of the episodes. Each episode's title refers to a cultural theme from mythology to cinema, but especially the first episode, "A Hard Man to Find," reminded me of Flannery O'Connor's 1953 short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find." The story's central message about the scarcity of moral goodness in the world resonates within the series through Ripley's character. O'Connor suggests that true virtue is elusive and often overlooked, while the capacity for evil resides within everyone, much like how the evil force in Ripley's character easily surfaces.
Tom Ripley's transformation from a young man struggling to find his place in the world and initially a rather insignificant character in New York is masterfully depicted in the series. As a talented imposter capable of assuming various identities with ease, when allowed to travel to Italy to persuade a wealthy businessman's son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home, he seizes the chance to escape his meaningless life. The series also includes some ironies and dialogues that highlight how awkward it is for an American to live in Europe.
Going to Europe, being part of this mission and encountering this new world he had never met before offered him a serious desire. The feeling of rejection, insignificance and not belonging is so intense that the desire to be someone escalates rapidly after meeting Greenleaf. Combined with Andrew Scott's mesmerizing portrayal of Ripley, all these thematic, cinematographic and narrative elements could be a beautiful attempt at bringing the novel to life.
For those who want to watch a series filled with Poe-esque murders, Alfred Hitchcock vibes, and paintings ranging from Picasso to Caravaggio, "Ripley" is a great choice.'
