TFATWS Anniversary Event 2024

The @sambuckylibrary will be holding a The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Anniversary Event! The event will start on March 18th and run until April 28th. During that time, we will be reblogging and sharing the work you guys create here on our blog.

This event is not just for the creators, but for the commenters. You can post fanfiction, art, moodboards, edits, podfics, fic list recs, comments, etc. It’ll be a low-stakes event. What is this?

Yes! You can fill one prompt with one piece of art or fic. You can try to fill all five prompts that week at once with one piece of art or fic. You can do any number in between.

Are there any prizes for making anything for this event?

Just the satisfaction that you made something cool.

Is it just SamBucky?

Yes please, just SamBucky. There can be side ships, but the main ship should be SamBucky.

How long will this event run?

It will run from March 18th and run until April 28th.

What are the guidelines for the bingo?

I will be borrowing some of this from the MYSU Valentine’s Day Bingo 2022 Guidelines, since they were fantastic.

For Everyone:

1. Remember to @sambuckylibrary in the post as well as #tfatwsanniversary2024.

2. Please also tag the prompt you’re filling (for instance, if the square is “Redwing”, use “#redwing” as one of your tags when posting about it on Tumblr).

3. If you’re uploading to AO3, please:

a ) Say somewhere which prompt you’re filling.

For Artists:

Things to be mindful of when creating:

For Sam

Avoid framing Sam only as a caretaker or emotional support for Bucky. Be mindful of Sam acting angry or aggressive in an out-of-character way and falling into the angry/sassy Black man trope (check out the MCU source material to help with character traits).

Avoid decentering Sam as a main character and refrain from focusing entirely on Bucky.

In art: avoid whitewashing Sam’s skin and research drawing Black characters.

General disclaimer: Race affects every aspect of his life, including interacting with police/government and the white structures of the world when it comes to performing his duties as Cap and simply being a Black man that lives in the U.S.

For Bucky

Avoid phrasing “flesh/normal/human hand” to refer to the contrast between his prosthetic arm and his right arm. The phrasing is ableist. You can simply refer to his prosthesis when relevant, otherwise use “right/left arm/hand”.

For more information, please check out this document suggested by @ninesdb on how to write Bucky as an amputee. @ninesdb is also open to questions if you have any queries not answered by the google doc.

EVVIVA and VIVA LA DANZA (TV Shows)

Tonight April 26th 2024 at 9:30PM GMT+1 on Raiuno (you need an Italian vpn to watch), Gianni Morandi (singer) will host a tv show about the history of Italian TV (and therefore you'll get a good amount of what our culture is about too) RAI is the first TV broadcaster we got in Italy, and it started with one channel few hours per day 70 years ago.

You can watch the show again on Sunday April 28th 2024 at 9:21PM GMT+1 on RaiPremium

On Monday April 29th 2024 at 9:30PM GMT+1, since it's gonna be the International day of Dance, you can watch on Raiuno (link above) a tv show about dancing. The host will be Roberto Bolle, famous Italian dancer. Together with him, many artists from TV, music and movies.

(You'll probably be able to re-watch the show on another RaiTV channel later on next week, still dunno when/where)

Both shows may be kept online on Raiplay as well for a while, but you may need a free log in to watch them (not just the Italian vpn).

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in April

Welcome to the 2nd quarter of 2024! In addition to April Fools Day (April 1), Eid al-Fitr (April 9-10), Patriots Day / Marathon Monday (April 15 in MA), Tax Day (April 15), Earth Day (April 22), Passover (April 22-30), Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24) and there's also a solar eclipse on April 8, here is what's on my radar this month:

Movies:

Coup de Chance

Not sure if I'm "looking forward to this", but I'm curious about Woody Allen's new one as he has hinted this would be his last. Whatever your opinion is of Woody Allen, as a filmmaker he has made some solid films. Opens 4/5.

Civil War 

Alex Garland has had a mixed bag as a writer/director with Ex Machina being his best so far. His new one has been creating quite a buzz about a dystopian not-so-far future where journalists try to make it to D.C. before rebels descend on the White House. No coincidence this is being released during an election year. Opens 4/12 (review to come).

Challengers

What got my attention about this tennis drama wasn't star Zendaya, director Luca Guadagnino or the score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's the fact that it was filmed in Massachusetts and more specifically it filmed a little in Bedford, where I grew up. Opens 4/26 (review to come).

Music:

Pearl Jam Dark Matter

Pearl Jam's 12th studio album is finally year. The band's last album was 2020's Gigaton, which I noted was their best album since their 2006 self-titled album. I'm digging what I've heard so far and hopes are high for this one! Album drops 4/19. (Review to come).

Bruce Springsteen Best of Bruce Springsteen

The Boss has released a number of compilations over the years, his 1995 Greatest Hits being among my favorites. Now there's a new compilation with 18 hits ranging from 1973 to 2020. Album drops 4/19 (review to come).

St. Vincent All Born Screaming

St. Vincent is back with her 7th studio album. This one features appearances by numerous guests including Dave Grohl and Josh Freese of Foo Fighters. Album drops 4/26.

TV:

Curb Your Enthusiasm finale

I've been enjoying Season 12 of Larry David's social assassin. This is the final season (or so they say) and the season/series finale is set to air on HBO on 4/7. End of an era!

Conan O'Brien Must Go

I'm a huge fan of Conan O'Brien, going back to Late Night with Conan O'Brien (read my memories of attending his show here) and since then he's bounced back from the Tonight Show debacle with a great run on TBS and his fun podcast. Now he's back with a travel show meeting fans all over the world! Series premiere on 4/18 on Max!

The day we celebrate independently owned and operated record stores is one of my favorite holidays of the year! It's on 4/20 this year!

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD

So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said,

“It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.

The movie “Cabrini,” shows Mother Frances Cabrini and her sisters fixing up a ramshackle building in one of New York’s worst slums so they can house and feed the desperately poor immigrant orphans they came to serve.  When they move to a bigger property, Mother Cabrini even digs s a well late at night.

These scenes came vividly to mind when I read today’s passage from Acts in which the apostles say that “it is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table,”

My first reaction was a snarky “Really???” We farm girls weren’t raised to think that hard work and helping others were beneath us. But prayer is important too.

We need  to ask iwhether service and prayer are mutually exclusive and whether one is higher than the other. What does Jesus teach us?

At the Last Supper he washed the feet of these same men who seem to think serving at table interferes with prayer – not the lesson I draw from that episode. On the other hand, Jesus told Martha to stop fussing at Mary for not helping because she chose to spend time with him. We can conclude that Jesus values both prayer and service.

Perhaps the best solution is to integrate prayer with service and to regard service as a form of prayer since most of us can’t turn work over to a community like the apostles did. I think of the years when I picked up my crabby, hungry kids and prayed for the pasta to cook faster. Sometimes I even remembered to offer up their bickering as I tossed the salad.

Starting your day with a quick morning offering of all your “prayers, works, joys and sufferings” is a great way to turn your crazy day over to God.  

Our lives need to incorporate both prayer and service. The trick is to find simple, workable ways to do this.

Saint Caesar de Bus

(Feb 3, 1544 – Apl 15, 1607)

Saint Caesar de Bus’ Story

Like so many of us, Caesar de Bus struggled with the decision about what to do with his life. After completing his Jesuit education he had difficulty settling between a military and a literary career. He wrote some plays but ultimately settled for life in the army and at court.

For a time, life was going rather smoothly for the engaging, well-to-do young Frenchman. He was confident he had made the right choice. That was until he saw firsthand the realities of battle, including the Saint Bartholomew’s Day massacres of French Protestants in 1572.

He fell seriously ill and found himself reviewing his priorities, including his spiritual life. By the time he had recovered, Caesar had resolved to become a priest. Following his ordination in 1582, he undertook special pastoral work: teaching the catechism to ordinary people living in neglected, rural, out-of-the-way places. His efforts were badly needed and well received.

Working with his cousin, Caesar developed a program of family catechesis. The goal—to ward off heresy among the people—met the approval of local bishops. Out of these efforts grew a new religious congregation: the Fathers of Christian Doctrine.

One of Caesar’s works, Instructions for the Family on the Four Parts of the Roman Catechism, was published 60 years after his death. He was beatified in 1975 and canonized in 2022.

“Family catechesis” is a familiar term in parish life today. Grounded in the certainty that children learn their faith first from their parents, programs that deepen parental involvement in religious education multiply everywhere. There were no such programs in Caesar’s day until he saw a need and created them. Other needs abound in our parishes, and it’s up to us to respond by finding ways to fill them or by joining in already established efforts.

EDITOR: I used to tell a sweet older friend of mine “ Don’t let her keep you out of heaven!”  I was referring to her sister, with whom she had long since had a “falling out.” This is a southern term for disowning each other.  This happens in the best of families.  Usually over money or land. The parents had maybe favored one child over another.  Or, they failed to divide their assets before they died, thus, leaving the siblings to squabble.  That is not a gift to leave your family. This often leads to a complete break in the ties that once bound them in love.  I hope to leave my family united in love, not enemies. I want us united in heaven and on earth!  LynneRMartin

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell.  TIME TO FLUNK SOME TEACHERS!! It makes me so sad to learn that many brilliant,  dedicated future nurses are dropping their life-long dreams because their NURSING instructors set up the students to fail.  In some cases, students are tested on material that has never been covered. Some instructors are not skilled in explaining health care procedures.  As an English instructor, I've been shocked that some of my A+ students-- hardworking, stable, dedicated future nurses, dropped out in tears.  Instead of helping, the  instructors bullied students to the point that the students would WITHDRAW, abandoning lifetime goals.  I called Tri-County Tech to ask: How many students originally  enrolled in the Nursing Program? Life Changes and Life Lessons.

Monday Mutiny

April 8th, 2024:

Happy Monday. Below are five things that challenged, motivated, or entertained me this past week—hopefully they will do the same for you.

(1) For starters, I spent most of last week in NYC, where I was a guest on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show (you can listen to my segment here if you’re interested; I believe I come on around 1:35:20). Even though I’ve taken a step back from social media, I haven’t become a total hermit (yet). All in all, I had a good time in New York—and, yes, I felt the earthquake that everybody was talking about—but the most memorable part of my trip was the night before the quake, when I met up with a relatively new friend. We’d never actually met in person, but we connected online a year or so ago because we’re both writers and we talk often about books, ideas, serial killers, travel, and just random observations about the state of the world.

Anyway, the reason why going out that last night in NYC was so memorable for me was because it was so familiar—eerily so. For a moment, it felt like I had stepped back in time, and everything that has transpired over the past five years of my life was non-existent. It was dream-like, and I don’t know that I’ve ever felt something quite like that before.

There, in the commotion of a Midtown bar, I was sucked into a time-warp. I was immediately taken back to my life pre-2019, back to a time when I, myself, lived in New York City and spent the majority of my nights out and about—hopping from bar to bar as the life of the party, drunk and without direction, having short encounters and conversations with individuals that I’d never see again—all while trying to conceal the fact that I was dreadfully lonely in a city with a population of more than eight million. And, for a few hours last week, I felt exactly as I did back then, the same way that I had felt throughout most of my twenties and early thirties: alone.

So, when it came time to call it a night, as I walked back into my smaller-than-remembered Manhattan hotel room, I wanted nothing more than to be home, lying on my couch, with my son snuggled under my arm, watching a show about dinosaurs.

I had a taste of my old life, and I didn’t want it. Not even a little bit.

Over the years, my life has gone through a series of profound changes—as I’m sure many of you have experienced as well—and, currently, I’m going through another significant change, a change that wasn’t planned or chosen (at least not intentionally), but I’ve never wanted to live the same life forever. And, when I allow myself to step back and look at the bigger picture, I’m grateful for every change and interruption that has come my way—the good, the bad, the great, and even the downright painful—because they’ve all led me to a new life, a new chapter, and a new version of myself, a version that is almost always better than before.

(2) On my flight home, I watched this movie called “The Lesson” from 2023. And, if you enjoy movies that are a slow burn, more thematic than action-packed, you’ll probably like it. Personally, I thought it was a super original premise regarding the emotions of grief and envy—but it also happens to be a story about writers, so perhaps I’m more connected to it than the average viewer.

However, regardless of my personal draw to the movie, I can say with confidence that it was ten times better than that terrible “Road House” remake. I mean, I see what they tried to do with it, but it’s absolutely unwatchable shit. The original works too well. Name a better duo than Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliot—that’s right, you can’t.

(3) I read this passage from a book, and it hit me like a fucking brick.

“Nothing in this world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty. No kind of life is worth leading if it is always an easy life . . . I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life; I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”

(4) While I waited in the airport lounge at JFK—lying on a couch with my face covered because, well, let’s face it: I was hungover from the night before—I was asked by an older gentleman if he could join me. The lounge was pretty full at this point and I was taking up a lot of space, so I sat upright and we got to talking.

Turns out, he was a retired Broadway actor—and although our lives were/are separated by more than thirty years—we had a lot in common. We talked for two hours (I almost forgot that I had a flight to catch) about pretty much everything: food, architecture, dogs, horses, tattoos, social media, travel, and, most importantly, the power of good storytelling.

My favorite book as a kid, The Count of Monte Cristo, just so happened to be his favorite play to perform on Broadway—he, himself, playing the main character, Edmond Dantès—betrayed by a best friend and driven to seek revenge.

As he and I talked, I thought to myself, “Damn, what an interesting life this dude has lived.” Chances are, he may have thought the same about me. And, that right there, is the reason why I love airports so much: you really never know who you’re going to meet—especially when you’re willing to move your feet in order to make room for somebody else to take a seat. I think life works the same way: If you create space, you never know who will show up to fill it.

(5) Well, one of the cats just caught a bunny in the backyard while I was writing this—and the contractor showed up to replace some dry wall above the kitchen cabinets—so, I need to go handle some “life” stuff now . . . You know the saying: “Life, it comes at you fast—and even faster when you have a bloodthirsty cat.” But, seriously, if there’s one thing that I’ve learned over my thirty-seven years on this planet, it’s the fact that life changes when you least expect it. And, when it changes, your expectations of life, and yourself, are what make all the difference.

City of God: Cicade de Deus [2002] War/Crime

It was like a message from God: "Honesty doesn't pay, sucker." - Buscapé

Once, after a random conversation with a brief acquaintance, I decided to watch this movie after they told me it was their favourite. They were interesting so I figured the things they loved would be too. It was just about the most traumatic piece of media I'd ever watch, but fair enough, it was also interesting.

I'm not a huge fan of trauma unless it's surrounded by healthy doses of the implausible so you can imagine the shock this was, right up the "Beasts of No Nation" alley (and you know that was another random dip into hyper-realistic cinematography I simply fell into). To some extent, I did not regret it despite my aversion to ever repeating it. I should share my appreciation for some of these works that are so well executed it compounds the impact of their vision.

This is a story well told, I know nothing about the slums of Rio de Janeiro but felt as close to its reality without my physical presence. Whole lives were represented unseen, a kind of terrible noise to a world that only really cares in removed contexts.

This is one of the few marvelous representations of known and unknown lives. A sober love depicting the pains of those who live it unknown, touch it unknown and surrender to it unknown. Even the purest evil of those who embrace it are truly creatures of their free will in all the fright of their circumstances. How deeply terrible to have so little choice and choose right or wrong.

I think more than anything, despite the small placated ending we are given here, the ageless horrors of life that encompass some lifetimes stay with you in the worst and best of ways. I'm glad the story was told exactly as it was.

Alas if I'm ever asked I can only ever say I loved the vivid colours, I loved the aesthetic and I loved the dark images of brown faces in places I do not contemplate existing outside of practical theory. I love that most about it, that no matter how sordid, they are still lives precious enough to someone who cares to tell the world about them. Impossible as it may be.

It is no surprise to find that the origin of the story is a novel by a local man himself.

Anyway watch it. It's still great to find impossibly good stories have been told as far as 21+ years ago and stood the test of time.

Hive is like Facebook except it pays you to post. Did you know Covid is also called SARS-COV-2? Wait a minute, whatever happened to SARS-COV-1? Did we have a pandemic for the first one? How are we already in the second one? Was I sleeping while the first one was going around? How many years ago was the first one? Is China stealing oil from Texas? Why was Joe Biden refused a Pentagon security clearance? There has been documented cases where people were missing over 90% of their brain tissue but where still able to function like a normal person. One person to even had just a thin layer around the inside of the skull. Literally an empty head and yet could still function as a human. They are destroying the second amendment right now. You have no idea.

Fall or Rise of Empires

This is what Mike Adams said today. He said something bad could happen over night, that is to the extent the dollar crashes, they'll try to blame the crazy Redditters, the conservatives, for destroying the money, they'll come up with crazy excuses, conspiracy theories, and then say how they saved us by giving us Biden Coins or whatever they want to call it. They are trying to have one centralized global digital currency, no cash, no decentralized cryptocurrencies. So, I agree this could happen at any time, especially if three or more stimulus checks come out in 2021, as they spend more and more money, as people demand silver, gold, etc. The centralized banking system could fall in the next few years or sooner. As that happens, either the good guys or the crazy globalists and baby eaters can take over as that happens. So, in other words, we are in a major transition in global history similar to the rise or fall of other great empires like that of Rome, Babylon, Persia, England, China, etc. But I can't say if we are in the middle of the fall or the rise of an evil authoritarian regime.

Some of the ingredients for the mRNA Covid Vaccine includes some of the most commonly consumed things including vinegar, salt, sugar, plus a few very common preservatives found in so many food items. Too many people buy processed foods which includes preservatives in them. So, why are these commonly consumed items in the vaccine? It is there to trigger autoimmune responses in your body's immune system. It may takes years for your body to get there, but slowly over time, your body will begin to develop allergies to salt, sugar, vinegar, etc. These allergies may spiral out of control into even worse problems over time. Now, that is just the tip of the iceberg. But it is a good thing to start with and share with others. Don't believe me. Don't take my word for it. So, they make money trying to fool you into getting one and then even more money when you have to come back to take some of their drugs to deal with the deadly side-effects. Have fun, kids. You WILL swell up like a balloon. I warned you. Why were thousands to millions of 2020 ballots had computer-printed vote marks as opposed hand-written vote marks all for Biden and none for Trump?

EDITOR: Have you ever noticed when you are talking, you cannot listen. You also won’t listen if you already have your mind made up.  A one-sided conversation is no conversation at all, especially if the talker, never listens, even  when the other person is allowed to speak.  Maybe that is why some people feel defeated and will not even try to stop something they know is wrong. It amazes me when so many people will not try.  It makes me ask myself, what is wrong to allow unhealthy things to become normal?  Pollution is wrong.  Overdevelopment is wrong.  Destruction of nature without replenishing or replanting is wrong.  People need to start listening to what others are saying about the destruction of their beloved communities and the way of life they cherished.  We need to stop the overdevelopment before we destroy everything good about the place we live.                 LynneRMartin

Childhood Poem:  The wise old owl lived in the oak. The more he heard, the less he spoke. The less he spoke the more he heard.  Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?  Some credit this poem to Edward Richards other sources list unknown.   One version of the poem is “the more he saw the less he spoke.” (I prefer the version I learned, and it makes more sense. Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell.  Miz Jeannie   We were so deprived-- children of the 1940's and 1950's-- growing up without cell phones, television, and  computers. The alternative was to TUNE IN to the conversations of grown ups.  My father constantly repeated safety instructions so that we would NEVER forget his sound advice.  Any time we lit a candle, Daddy would remind us, "Fire is a good servant, but a bad master." So true.  ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE FLAME BECAUSE A TINY SPARK CAN IGNITE YOUR WHOLE HOUSE!!! I am an old granny now, but I never take my eyes off a glowing candle.  In the fall, grand daughters Daphne and Margot come to visit. We use old candles to light up our jack o' lantern. Then we roast marshmallows over a crackling fire. This gives me the opportunity to pass down family wisdom. I envision that someday the girls will pass this advice on to their grand children. FIRE IS A GOOD SERVANT BUT A BAD MASTER Pass it on.  Save a Life! Oconee County, I Love You! The owner would stock the lake with fish--bream, bass and catfish--and charge a fee to fish there. Following is an advertisement for a fishing lake that was in the March 17, 1954 Keowee Courier: "Open For Fishing! Now in Second Year! Lake Diana - Located 7 miles northeast of Salem on Shallow Ford Road, Mrs. L.P. Head, Owner. Highway paved all the way. Over a ton of Blue Cats recently put in lake. Also stocked thoroughly last year with Bass, Bream, and Catfish. We serve delicious Country Ham and Catfish Dinners."
