#marcusmumford #Brighton : #Chalk. The last leg 3.12.22
Well. What a few weeks it has been. Can’t really believe it’s all over. As per the end of any tour. Let the memories find their space and the joy live on.
Brighton by train on a Saturday. Not beyond the wit of man is it, but nearly beyond the wit of south western railways and then southern railways.
Can’t believe they cancelled the extra 5 carriages and at Bournemouth and made all those who got on for LONDON now ride cattle class standing up in the aisles riding shotgun behind the person in front. It was pretty poor. A change at Southampton saw chaos as another 100 travellers wanted to get on. But were turned away. Can’t believe my joy that after all these years I spotted entering Totton, on the side of a large building Peter Mumford and Sons flour mills 1885. Google it!!
Second leg, started well, but 8 stops were cancelled due to the training being late!!! I mean ok for me again but goodness me that’s poor isn’t it.
Brighton be still my beating heart. It’s been too long. The North Lanes. The graffiti / murals on the buildings, the winding lanes, the independent shops, the vintage shops. I was in seventh heaven. Kid in a candy store!!
Although only 4 degrees a walk on the pier, and the sound of pebbles under your feet is a must.
Lunch in the vegan cafe. So good. Pea and kale burger 💯 winner.
Chalk. The understated lost venue. Squint and you’ll find it in Brighton.
Only a short time queuing due to the extreme temperature outside. But always meaningful.
Passer by group number
1. Is this a strip club? Who you waiting for?
Passer by number 2. Who you waiting for ….. is he the comedian?
Met an amazing lady, visiting Brighton in memory and in spirit of her late daughter. I’ll say no more, but we’re thinking of you. And she would have loved every second of the show. Her spirit lives on. Xx #forever
Show time TBC on the tickets. 8pm ish on the email. 8.35pm in real time. Packed crowd. At the front was the photographer that has always been around Sussex, shaved head and impressive hipster beard. Many times I’ve seen him. Always remember seeing him at the Lewes stopover covered in chalk dust head to toe post colour chalk battle. I found the photo!! Look out for his pictures.
General summary. Soaking it all in as this is the last one. 🥹. MM Outfit change. Long black trousers and black boots. Gone are the white socks and pumps. Well it is 2 degrees outside. Wise choice.
We got 50 mins of Musial joy. Mixed in with good banter.
:Still operating as an elite squad since the band left them in Dublin.
:What day of the week is it. We were very quiet for a Saturday night in Brighton was it because the poppers hadn’t kicked in yet.
:Tour strap lines, “do you want a line”. As in Liverpool at the tour bus a Liverpudlian came up and asked them!!! Later during the show, you know who you are, a Liverpudlian shouted “do you want a line” sing I’m in fire… you don’t ask you don’t yet. To much hilarity for Marcus who said it made his evening!!
:Some crowd feedback that they couldn’t hear him. “Well you should have come earlier”.
:MFT: roadie talk for my first tour. Rookie error . The way the guitar was tuned for The Cave, (tuned by MM) was way too high, but once you’re in you’re in right??? :You still nailed it.
:C*nt chat
:Reincarnation…. ❤️
:I will wait , Mixing it up by asking if he could stand on the bar so that the back could hear him off mic. Only to find that the ceiling wasn’t that high so opting for sitting on the bar. Always a winner.
:Marcus catching a flight to New York today.
:Signing off with see you soon. We hope so.
:lady at end asking for the mug that MM had been drinking from…. Confirmation that it was Green Tea.
A joyful evening of course over too soon. Leaving the crowd wanting more. Back out into the chilly winter winds. Anyone for a five guys? 👋. Post Tour diet starts today.
Set list:
Only Child
Dangerous Game
Awake my soul
Go in light
Better off high
The Cave
Cowboy
Reincarnation
Grace
How
I will wait
(I think)

A bit from “Dramatic Exchanges”
Daniel Day-Lewis had been cast in the National Theatre’s 1989 production of Hamlet and had experienced a somewhat rocky run - critics had said they weren’t very impressed, with the Daily Telegraph noting that “quick Renaissance intellect was absent” and the Evening Standard saying that the production and/or his acting strikes “one consistent note of querulous melancholy” (how that is different from any other production of Hamlet is what I would like to know, but I’m not particularly a fan of Hamlet to begin with).
The author William Boyd had written to the director (of the production and, at that time, of the National Theatre) Richard Eyre about the performance saying
I was quite drained and exhausted at the end (God only knows how Daniel feels.) I thought it was incredibly lucid and very clear-cut: very confident, too, in the way that you let people just stand and talk. And because it was so clear what was happening I saw how fallacious it is to look for one Hamlet: that somehow there is one basic theme, or one way of playing it that makes the play click. ‘If only we had the combination we could unlock it’ sort-of thing. One suddenly sees that all those one-note productions - of Hamlet as Oedipal wimp, or proto-fascist punk, or demented neuro - are so limiting. It may be neat or nifty, but it’s tremendously wrong. That’s what I liked about Dan’s performance - it was admirably complex: strong & weak, clever & guileless etc. etc. You also realised just what a bloody difficult thing it is that the ghost asks him to do: ‘Knock off the King, will you?’ We blithely accept these conventions - ‘any decent son would avenge his dead father’ - without contemplating the appalling problems involved, whether pragmatic or emotional.
Boyd goes on to praise the rest of the production, particularly Polonius and how “refreshing to see the ‘advice’ [to Laertes] scene not played for laughs: you suddenly realize how sensible his words were.”
Daniel Day-Lewis was contracted to play up to November but it had been announced he would be leaving early. On September 5th, 1989, he had a kind of breakdown onstage (during/after the Ghost’s exit in Act 1, Scene 5) and would not be able to continue to performance. Jeremy Northam, his understudy, went on and performed as Hamlet until Ian Charleson was brought in to fully replace Daniel Day-Lewis (who has not acted on stage since).
Charleson had AIDS and
He appeared as Hamlet 18 times, his performance praised by John Peter as ‘a brilliant exercise in mature judgment: his sombre self-knowledge forms the true substance of his tragedy, and it enables us both to be moved by the experience and judge it.’
Charleson’s last Hamlet, on 13 November [1990], was given to a full house and a standing ovation; in Eyre’s words: ‘He acted as if he knew it was the last time he’d be on stage.’ He died on 6 January 1990, aged 40. Keith Baxter, who had played Henry VIII in A Man for All Seasons on Broadway, and Prince Hal in Orson Welles’s film Chimes at Midnight (1965), reflected on Charleson’s final role, after meeting Eyre in his NT office.
Dear Richard,
[...] I never told you how much I admired yr. handling of the Ian Charleson crisis. I was a good acquaintance of Ian’s [...]
During the last months of his life - rehearsing and playing Hamlet - Ian often asked to come to my house in Sussex. He would walk along the beach with me and talk quite coolly about Death. He would also - you must understand I was like a surrogate father to him - discuss his fears about rejection from the Company. ‘I think Richard knows, but he hasn’t said anything yet - what shall I do?’ All he wanted, needed, was someone rather square and older, i.e. boring, like me - to listen. So I listened. He told me you had been wonderful and writing this now gives me the chance to thank you for that, for him. Just before the run finished at the National he called me on Sunday ‘They’re going to Hong Kong. I don’t think I can do it. Nobody really likes my performance anyway.’ I told him to stop feeling sorry for himself and had he seen the S. Times that day. He said he hadn’t. I told him to get Patsy Pollock [casting director] to bring him one. ‘Why?’ I wouldn’t tell him - but it was the John Peter review. Ian called me two hours later. ‘Richard did it you know, it was all Richard!’ I wish I could have seen it, everyone said it was unforgettable and of course Ian’s imminent death lent the whole experience a Pirandellian dimension: ‘If it be not now...’ But I never could see it because I was in my own play at The Vaudeville, and Ian died one Saturday and I couldn’t even get to say goodbye to him.

I want to say it was Richard Palmer but in any case, one of the RR said the NT was unhappy with Meghan because she wouldn't do public engagements for them? For some reason? It was weird. But I think the NT is over her now and accepting they'll never get anything public from her.

Im just sitting here cackling. THEY ARE NEVER GOING BACK, the BRF can take that one year review and shove it
Right? I still don’t trust that ol’ Liz won’t do something petty though, like take their royal patronages away (rugby for Harry, NT for Meg?) or tell them they can’t use their Sussex title anymore. Oh well.

Think I missed this one the other day.:
If you dare to raise any questions about whatever mad-capped plan or idea they have, you’re immediately sidelined.
ETA: ☕️
But the biggest question of all left by the scandal is this: What on earth has the Queen, at 93-years-old, done to deserve this type of shoddy treatment?
Her husband Prince Philip is unwell. She’s been forced to make a personally devastating decision to professionally cut loose her favourite son Prince Andrew as a result of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. And she tried so hard to make it work for Harry and Meghan.
In fact, I reckon you’d be shocked to find out the dramatic lengths she has gone to in trying to keep a demanding US TV celebrity happy at Windsor Castle.
She even gave Harry and Meghan 24/7 access to her private chefs, for goodness sake, who were going to great lengths to track down organic ingredients and satisfy the couple’s quirky requests.
But sadly, it was never going to be enough — Harry and Meghan have far loftier ambitions.
☕️Confirmation that she demanded the heliocopter pilot flying anywhere at anytime for her cravings?
“They’ll blank you and find someone else who will agree with whatever it is they want to do.”
Everyone says so
But, they quickly added: “If it all goes spectacularly wrong, have no doubt that you’ll be the one blamed.”
Of course, Meghan is perfect, never her fault
Harry and Meghan knew exactly what they were doing when they went rogue this week — and the decision will have lasting implications on the couple’s future.
And perhaps most hilariously of all, are both of these egomaniacs REALLY prepared to stomach the idea of having to bow to their rivals Prince William and Kate, something that would be expected if they were to give up or be stripped of their HRH titles?
Exactly! Smeg will never be in the same room as them the rest of her life. Ever. She expects them to curtsy to her!
They are all fascinating and unprecedented questions that the institution of the monarchy was so desperate to try to sort out BEFORE the couple went public with their battle plan.
A battle plan we now know that involves revealing uncomfortable details about the financial status of the Royal Family and going to war with the great British Press.
It’s not as if they didn’t have time to get their ducks in a row. I first revealed this royal bombshell in The Sun on Wednesday.
But I have been working on the details of the shock story for a number of weeks — something Harry and Meghan were well aware of.
H and M knew for weeks, I take that to mean 3 weeks, that it was coming out and their answer was to fly in, drop a bomb and fly out. A**holes
In fact, I first put the story to their representatives on Saturday, December 28, giving them at least ten days to make other members of the family aware of what they were intending and to set some early ground rules.
Instead they prepared their assault. I wonder why she chose NT to stop in to.

While I think it was good for Meghan to hold a job as an actress for seven years since it’s a hard profession to “make it” in, if I was an actor treading the boards on the National Theatre, I wouldn’t exactly be excited to get her as a patron. The highest status acting jobs in Britain isn’t big tv or movie productions, it’s being on the West End. Do you really need a patron like M in that case? Anyway, at the time of her appointment she had a big profile, but she never did anything with it. And doing private visits then and now is fine, but not when you’re trying to give exposure to an exhibition and only does it to your ~10 million followers on IG, half who doesn’t care about the exhibition in the first place. This outing was also a day before they dropped their statement, apparently the NT had been talking to her about their plans for the year, so they were not happy when the statement dropped (as I guess the rest of their charities and patronages was).
I think all-in-all it’s pretty telling which organizations that she’s stayed in contact with, or who has wanted her to do something for them. The National Theatre and Commonwealth universities doesn’t need Meghan, they are fine without her. But Smart Works and Mayhew are not as well known and benefits more.
I understand why they gave that patronage to Meghan, why the Queen decided that regardless of whether she was a famous actress or acted in the theatre before, she could related more with it, she had an understanding of the work a little better than any other member, so I get it. Like you said She had a big profile not because she was meghan but because she was the Duchess of Sussex, a member of the royal family and she could do more for/with the theatre than the Queen at That point (I don’t remember the last time the Queen did something with them before that). About the exhibition, yeah that was bad I remember the papers were the ones that said the exhibition was available and that it was ending in 2 days. You can see that they didn’t mention much about it in their post, didn’t invite the public to go and visit the exhibition and tbh didn’t show much about it.

“... or who has wanted her to do something for them.” This is a important part that we often forget, Most of the time it does not depend on the royals.

Here’s what I think - Harry led her to believe he is with her, agreed to apply for TM, set up Sussex website etc., all while working with his family to kick her out. She does not have any more engagements lined up so she goes to NT with photographer with her so she can keep pretending on IG that she is still RF member. When she arrived, she was informed she is no longer patron and/or HM said prevented her from doing anything there. Hence the rings were off and her revenge statement.
Yes....I agree with you😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
