"HOBOES TURN DOWN WINNIPEG FOR CONVENTION," Winnipeg Tribune. May 9, 1933. Page 4. ---- Hoboes of America will not meet in convention in Winnipeg this summer, Charlie Pearce, the "hobo king," announced Monday as he prepared to leave for the West. King Charles could not arouse any enthusiasm in Mayor R. H. Webb for the proposed gathering, and plans for the convention have been abandoned.
Through the devious channels of hobo communication word has gone out that the "riders of the rods" will not come to Central Canada. Their leader will make another effort to gather his subjects at some far western point.
"The mayor refused to sanction our gathering, and I want the hoboes to know that there will not be a convention in Winnipeg," Pearce said Monday night as he prepared to leave for the coast after a week's stay in Winnipeg.

The IOF killed yet another journalist while they're on trial for genocide. They're absolute monsters.
Journalists are protected under international laws (especially under areas of "armed conflict" and since the western world/media keeps calling this a "war" [even though this is a genocide, not a war] -that the IOF has been continuously breaking Geneva Conventions and has been committing war crimes because journalists in "war zones must be treated as civilians and protected as such"). The IOF has murdered over 100 of them -these are people with livelihoods, dreams, ambitions, hobbies, families, and friends, and so much more.
I read a post earlier that when Saudia Arabia murdered one journalist back in 2018 (his name was Jamal Khashoggi) there was global outrage -as there should be for MANY reasons whenever a government institution and/or power kills a person whose work is meant to collect information, and to investigate for publication and dissemination to the world -targeting and assassinating speakers and conveyors of news is beyond heinous. But the fact that over 100 PALESTINIAN JOURNALISTS, including their families -have been systemically targeted and killed by the IOF, is despicable. The occupation MUST end and Palestine must be free.
Rest in power and peace, Muhammad.

Ever since I discovered the convention exclusive Barbies I've been excited to show them off. Allow me please to show you the 2021 National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention dolls: Barbie and Ken Power Pair.
Tumblr media
But if you are not sufficiently impressed by Ken's rather squashed looking face (I have seen him described as "those brothers who have done too much plastic surgery" and "handsome Squidward"), you may be relieved to know that there was an AA set released as well as the Caucasian set.
Tumblr media
I honestly couldn't tell you which one I like better. I think I like the AA Ken himself better, but I like his suit less.
Tumblr media
The dolls themselves, rather than just the promotional photos, reveal that the outfits honestly look a little cheap - given these were limited edition convention exclusives, surely Mattel could have put in a slightly higher production value on these. At least give them some buttons and proper hems.

“Blackout Tips' Held Confusing,” Montreal Star. March 18, 1942. Page 10. --- Red Lights Dimmer Than Blue, Engineer Tells Convention --- EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN --- The myriads of suggestions from all sides as to what to do in regard to blackout procedure, have confused not only the public but the illuminating engineers, according to R. M. Robinson, of the Canadian General Electric Company, Limited, who this afternoon addressed the Second Canadian Regional Conference of the Illuminating Engineering Society at the Mount Royal Hotel.
Throughout his paper Mr. Robinson made frequent reference to colored lights, and he asserted that blue lights should not be used, even though many thought to the contrary and hundreds of thousands of blue lights had been sold in the last two months. Mr. Robinson said that a dimly lighted red area was normally detected by an observer only when his line of sight happened to pass within a degree or two. On the other hand, a dimly lighted blue area was seen over a very wide angle from the line of light. Furthermore, he pointed out, objects and luminous patterns on the street at distance of 20 feet or more could be brought into sharp focus by most observers with red illumination but not with blue. But even red illumination did not find favor so much as dim white light, and Mr. Robinson pointed out that in Britain dim auxiliary street lighting had been installed with very small 10-watt lamps.
COST NOT JUSTIFIED For Canada, however, he did not think the enormous cost of such auxiliary street lighting systems in the shape of materials, labor, power and electricity was not justified now, and complete extinction of street lights in a blackout was preferable to any scheme for dim light if raids were likely to be infrequent and only last for a short time.
Pointing out that blackouts did not bring immunity from bombing, Mr. Robinson said that they did conceal the pattern of streets and centres of activity and helped to prevent identification of particular areas, while they also would prevent haphazard bombardment, and every city or town within reach of enemy bombing planes must be able to enforce blackout measures not only for its own protection, but because lights might be indicative of other important areas. The speaker said that the disadvantages of extinguishing all power circuits by pulling general switches had proved, by experience to far outweigh the advantages of keeping them all energized.
DEPRESSING EFFECT He deprecated the permanent blacking out of windows in industrial plants as having a depressing effect and necessitating the use of considerable artificial illumination, and suggested other means of hoods and shields which would prevent light being seen from above, or the provision of wooden or material window covers in case of raids.
Mr. Robinson quoted what was being done in Vancouver and Halifax, and said that for motorists the number of lights allowed was limited, and these must be completely blacked out with the exceptional of a horizontal slit three inches in length and one quarter of an inch in width, the slit to be so located that he top of it shall be one inch below the centre of the headlight lens. Tail-lights must be completely blacked out with the exception of a circle one half inch in diameter which shall project light rays on as near a horizontal plane as possible.
IMPORTANCE STRESSED The great importance of good sight, to a nation at war, was emphasized this morning by Leo Roy, in a paper read to the technical session. "Men, money and material are three necessary factors in the pursuit of victory," Mr. Roy said, "but of the three, men are most important.
"There are three attributes that go together in making an efficient employe in any industry, namely his hands, mind and eyes. The control of two of these, the hands and mind, are within the control of the employe himself, but his eyes are largely the employer's responsibility.
LIGHTING IN HOME Also stressing the need of adequate lighting in the home, Mr. Roy pointed out that the worker comes home after work to relax and ease the strain of high tension working conditions. One of the relaxations is reading. Its purpose is defeated if the process demands an excess of nervous and muscular energy due to poor lighting conditions.

Which President, in your opinion, was the most reluctant to seek the position? Which wound up hating it the most by the end of his term?
I am a strong believer that nobody truly becomes President of the United States "reluctantly". That's not exactly the kind of job that seeks you, especially the modern Presidency.
For a significant slice of American history, many of the people nominated for President acted as if they were being called upon to run when, behind-the-scenes, they were very active in building their campaigns and corralling supporters. Until the 20th Century it was frowned upon to openly run for the Presidency, but almost all of the Presidents wanted the gig.
I'd say that George Washington was probably more reluctant than most of his successors and likely would have preferred retiring to Mount Vernon after the Revolution, but I think he also recognized that he was the guy who needed to be the President that set the precedents. I think Ulysses S. Grant would have been perfectly happy to not be President, but once he was elected in 1868 he also wanted to keep the job. He even tried to run for a third term in 1880.
That 1880 election might have been the one case where the winner -- James Garfield -- genuinely wasn't interested in the Presidency at that point. He had gone to the Republican National Convention to support fellow Ohioan John Sherman (and defeat Grant's hopes for a third term) and gained some major attention after giving a well-received speech placing Sherman's name in nomination. When the candidacies of Sherman and James G. Blaine -- another anti-Grant candidate -- stalled, Garfield became a compromise choice and was eventually nominated on the 36th ballot. Garfield was apparently legitimately shocked by the events leading to him leaving Chicago as the GOP nominee.
By most accounts, William Howard Taft was far more interested in a potential seat on the Supreme Court than becoming President. At heart he was a judge and believed himself to be better suited for the judiciary than the Executive Branch. But Taft turned down three offers by Theodore Roosevelt to be appointed to the Supreme Court (in 1902, 1903, and 1906) because he felt obligated to complete his work as Governor-General of the Philippines and then Secretary of War. But Taft's wife desperately wanted him to become President and by the time of President Roosevelt's third offer of a seat on the Court, Taft was already being talked about as Roosevelt's hand-picked successor in the White House. And, as with all other Presidents, once he had a taste for the job, he didn't want to give it up, running for re-election in 1912 against his former friend, Roosevelt.
Gerald Ford is the only other President who hadn't spent a significant portion of his political career with his eyes on the White House. Ford spent nearly a quarter-century in the House of Representatives and his main ambition was to be Speaker of the House, but Republicans weren't able to win control of the House when Ford was in Congressional leadership positions. But even with Ford being a creature of Congress, he did attempt to put himself forward as a nominee for the Vice Presidency, first in 1960 and then in 1968, and Nixon kicked the tires on picking him as his running mate in 1960. No one wants to be Vice President without seeing it as a potential stepping stone to the Presidency, particularly at that point in history before Vice Presidents were empowered with some real influence within the Administrations they served in.
As for who wound up hating it by the end of their time in office, I think it's safe to say that John Quincy Adams didn't shed too many tears when he was defeated for re-election in 1828. And I'm sure he wouldn't use the word "hate", but nobody can convince me that George W. Bush wasn't thoroughly ready to escape Washington by late-2007. There were times in 2008 when he seemed like he just wanted to hold a snap election like they have in parliamentary systems and go home to Texas. If some Presidential insider published a book that said that Bush asked if he could just give the keys to the White House to Barack Obama in July 2008, I wouldn't be the least bit shocked.
On the other hand, if there were no term limits, Bill Clinton would have been running for President in every election since 1992 (and the crazy thing is that he's still younger than both of the presumptive 2024 nominees). I'm kind of surprised that he didn't make an effort to repeal the 22nd Amendment in the past 20 years. Clinton loved being President and was trying to find something Presidential to do until minutes before his successor was inaugurated in 2001.

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I'll be in Chicago for the annual C2E2 comic and pop culture convention! I'll be there all 3 days from 1 to 4 at the NATIONAL CARTOONISTS SOCIETY booth and I am beyond excited! That said, this strip is the beginning of what I HOPE will be a really fun little 3 week story arc. If you're unfamiliar with my PAST work, that sneaky little guy at the bottom is Dandy Q. Dog, the star of my previous webcomic, Dandy & Company. He's been a bit indignant since his strip was canceled, so for the next few strips, he's taking over while I'm away. Hope you enjoy. ;)
