#Nightmare the bastard

If Nightmare fell in love, would he expect them to be just as loyal to Bane as he is? Would insulting Bane or any form of like blasphemy against him turn Nightmare against them? Or would his "love" prevail and they'd just be severely punished?
I feel like Nightmare is a bit too selfish to cast aside someone he desires because of theological disagreements. Truthfully, a lot of it is because he doesn't care what you think. Don't ever forget, he's smarter, cleverer, faster, stronger, and better than you and what you have to say about things doesn't matter. He doesn't care what your opinions on Bane are because you're a silly, foolish little girl and you should be grateful he's here to set you straight.
You will, however, be forced to respect Bane much in the same way you will respect Nightmare.
There was a point in time he thought he would end up marrying for politics and thought he'd inevitably end up engaged to either some uppity royal bitch or a Baneite high priestess. However, funny enough, he isn't attracted to them. At all. In fact, he's attracted to the complete opposite. Obviously this causes complications.
He likes weak, soft, precious little things. Obviously they can't be Baneite because they're 'on the bottom of the pecking order.' Why would someone weak worship a god who serves them as fodder to the strong?
Keep in mind, his faith is very, very important to him. He's a devout Baneite. Probably the most devout Baneite. He makes Gortash look like a little bitch. Incidentally, Bane encourages all of his worst instincts as well, and Nightmare has the power and will to take what he wants, so it works out— for him.
However, he knows what the 'lesser people' think of Bane and Baneite philosophy, so I doubt he'd be surprised at your horror.
You will be hearing about Bane whether you want to or not. You will be told over and over again that you are his reward for his absolute faith and devotion to his lord Bane. You will be told that you were born and bred to be his whore as he thanks Bane for such an 'incredibly generous gift.' Obviously he was meant to have you. You are the perfect gift for his unwavering loyalty to his God.
Typically, if you chose to insult Bane, a few things can happen.
If you're lucky, he will laugh in your face, sneering about how what you think doesn't matter and warning you that lashing out to get a rise out of him is foolish and will only end in your pain. He doesn't give a damn what you think about it. Bane has decreed that the strong can ravage the weak, and he fully intends to do so to you, and no paltry insults you snivel at him will stop this. (But by all means, keep crying. It gets him harder than a rock.)
The most likely outcome is physical violence. He will backhand you with rings and all, leaning down and warning you to watch your mouth about your betters. He will not abide blasphemy in his ship (or palace or wherever he's keeping you) and if you continue to run your mouth, he will find another more fitting use for it.
This will get worse every time.
Here's the bit though. Chances are, you are going to do so only once, and you will do it only in a moment of indignant anger. Because by the time the thought crosses your mind again, you will have learned what he is capable of, and you will be utterly fucking petrified of him. Even the brattiest of the brats, even the most defiant, strong willed conquests will tremble and learn that angering him for a rise is a bad fucking idea.
Nightmare gleefully dominates, manhandles, and violates you, and that is putting it politely. Making you terrified is an Olympic sport and he's got the gold medal 153 years running. If the pain doesn't deter you, the fear will. Fear of what he will do to you, to your loved ones, to anyone who crosses his path. Seriously, I haven't touched on the fear much but.. trust me.
Trust me. Get one good jab in on Bane and get it in early. You won't do so again.
Now, obviously the more serious things become, the more Bane is going to impact your life. Marriage, for example. He will want a Baneite priest to officiate an official Baneite wedding. He will want all of Bane's vows and traditions honored. (However, good luck telling what he's lying about if you don't know much about Bane. The altar where he 'takes' you immediately after the wedding? The vows you repeat that say you will 'honor and love thy lord and husband, serve your lord and husband faithfully and without question, be subservient and lie before your husband whenever demanded, and kneel before your lord and husband loyally and faithfully'? Is it a lie or genuine Baneite tradition? Doesn't matter, it's happening.)
He will want your children together to be raised to honor Bane, and if he can, he will convert you, even though obviously he is the strong one and you will kneel before him.
That being said, he's also partial to other religions— er, namely ones that are very strict or have virtuous tenants you adhere to because he has a massive, massive "religion" kink. That's a sex thing though. The God literally doesn't matter. He just wants to, for example, choke you with a rosary while you beg for your God to save you as he rails you from behind so hard it hurts. That's actually very tame and you'll be lucky if that's all that happens, and it will only be because he busts too early in his unhinged excitement.
Literally, it's only a sex thing. Seriously, crying and religion are his hot buttons, namely dominating weaker religions. Any God but Bane means nothing to him. You will be put in a nun outfit (A real one. None of that sexy costume garbage) and he will fucking attack you like a rabid animal. This is happening. Come to peace with it.

"Property of Theodore Spankoffski"
A tear comes to Pete's eye.
"He's with me always"
Anyway, I love seeing people's reactions when they learn Pete is Ted's brother 🐐 The goat bros 🐐💛

the thing about the spankoffski brothers is that ted tries so hard to have rizz but simply does not
meanwhile pete puts 0% into being attractive and then in multiple universes steph talks to him for like a minute and instantly falls in love with him
and i love them both dearly

"average hatchetfield citizen dies horribly in three timelines" factoid is actually just a statistical error. average citizen dies horribly in zero timelines. "doomed-by-the-narrative Ted", who works at CCRP Technical and dies in every fucking timeline is an outlier and should not be counted

what a lil guy.
I should really focus on completing more pieces but the raw charisma of Ted Spankoffski forced me to do this sketch and ignore my many other wips.

I love how intricate your au is! How did Asto escape in your au?
To know that, you've got to understand a little bit of Nightmare's backstory.
Nightmare is an agent of Hell. He's a devil, for lack of a better word. He wasn't initially, but he was taken from his parents by a particularly cruel pitfiend that had a penchant for collecting children with potential and turning them into his personal instruments of war for his personal gain. In most of the AUs, Nightmare's father Rue and his mother Lady (a pure-blood dragon, so that's a whole new level of tragedy for me) are dead (there actually exists a few where they are alive because Nightmare can dimension-hop as a powerful mage but in his, they are dead and gone.) The pitfiend that kidnappend him, Ahriman, 'raised' him... if raising him is what you can call it.
Long story short, Nightmare fucking despises Ahriman. After escaping Hell, be believed his younger 'siblings' that he'd grown to care for and love and raised himself (albeit terribly) were dead, and so he refused to return until he could fucking kill Ahriman. He did, however, dedicate himself to power, no matter what the cost.
Ahriman is a powerful force in Hell, and he's working his way up the ranks. Nightmare is considered a 'prince' being his 'son.' However, Nightmare wanted him dead. At any cost.
Cazador's little deal with the hells stood to make Ahriman gain. If he went through with it, Ahriman would have once again ascended in power, making him even more difficult to take down. If you know anything about certain pitfiends, they're already a fuckin' bitch. Ahriman is a special pitfiend that his working his way up. That is bad news. For everyone. Especially Nightmare.
Nightmare went to Baldur's Gate to sniff around some rumors he'd heard from some contacts in hell, and he knew to start at bars and taverns when dealing with vampires. He knew someone was cooking up something that had to do with them where someone he very much despised stood to gain from it. He wanted to interrupt it and turn the tables at any cost.
He ran into Asto by a very fortunate accident.
Asto fully intended to bring him back to Cazador as a pretty prize, but Nightmare, the learned prick, he of course already knew Asto was a vampire. Nightmare was also a very powerful force in his own right. The two were at a standoff, with Astarion panicking that he'd failed his ruse and been discovered, and Nightmare needing the information that Astarion had.
What Nightmare wasn't counting on was Astarion's utter hatred of Cazador, and his willingness to do anything to get out.
He also wasn't counting on enjoying Astarion's company as much as he did. He genuinely liked the guy.
They drank together for a bit, and Nightmare asked him what he would be willing to do to be free from Cazador; to see him dead.
Asto said anything.
Upon inspecting the runes on his back and piecing together the information he already had, Nightmare was able to understand what was about to take place. A vampiric ascension with an unprecedented amount of souls on the line. An amount of souls that would make someone very powerful. His father, that son of a bitch Ahriman.
He couldn't abide that.
Nightmare asked Astarion to trust him. Astarion didn't, but ultimately, he'd rather die at Nightmare's hands than ever end up back under Cazador. They ended up getting a bit drunk together that night, and frankly, they bonded.
Nightmare is a narcissist, and he saw himself in Astarion. He liked him. A lot.
After some drunken shenanigans, Astarion put his faith in this strange devil.
So, to not bore you with the details of what happened: Asto led Nightmare back to Cazador as an offering. Nightmare, already prepared for whatever tricks Cazador had in mind, was able to get the upper hand.
It wasn't necessarily an easy battle, but by the end of it, Cazador was dead, and the ritual was interrupted--
Except Asto wanted it. He wanted to ascend instead, similar to how he does in canon.
Nightmare made a deal with him. Give him one year to figure something out. Ascending would cause Nightmare some serious problems if he were to sacrifice the souls to who he intended to. He asked for Astarion's trust one more time. He's a devil, and he could figure out a way to give Astarion what he wants. He just needed time.
Frankly, there wasn't anything left in the city for Astarion. Just rotten memories and pain. Nightmare offered him a place on his ship in the meantime. You know, to make sure he held up his end of the bargain (and definitely not just because he enjoyed his company and he'd been alone for so long with no one but his crew that he was going mad.) Asto accepted, because what else could he do? He wasn't about to watch his chance at ascension slip into the sunset and risk Nightmare not coming back, and frankly, he knew whoever was waiting for those souls was going to be furious and come looking for answers. He didn't want to be there when they did, since he was technically an accessory in foiling the plot.
Nightmare was good on his word. He was able to find another way to ascend where Nightmare gained from it instead. Astarion became an ascended vampire, but was able to his soul, because frankly, Nightmare liked him as he was. Nightmare could have technically taken his soul, but he didn't want to. Sure, he lost some power from it, but he fully intended on gaining it back through other means-- and he did. It was a small sacrifice to make for his best friend.
Astarion was able to walk in the sun and gained most all the powers of a true ascended vampire. More than that, he wasn't alone for the first time in aeons.
He could have left at that point, but he didn't. He chose to stay by Nightmare's side as his first mate, and they've been brothers ever since. Astarion is arguably one of the only people Nightmare truly loves and cares about alongside Reaver and Ilya, and he was one of the first at his side.
Basically, Nightmare came sniffing about and Astarion was charming and handsome. Nightmare rubbed off on him a lot, taught him how to live, and about the finer pleasures in life. Taught him how to sail and pillage. Turned him towards Bane. Brought him into his inner circle. They ravaged the Sword Coast for years until Nightmare was ready o make a move on Hell. Loved and adored him. Reaver came along shortly after. And then Ilya. All of which were instrumental in Nightmare's revenge (and his wife Snakefang in another au, another ridiculous OC of mine.)
They've all been inseparable ever since.
Unless, of course, some pretty thing gets in-between them. Then it turns into a playful game of 'I own her more.'
Ultimately, they would never turn on each other. Their bond is too strong and they've been together for too long. But a little sporting competition?
Ah, that's never hurt anyone, has it?
(Except the poor girl caught in their tug-o-war.)
