In the last week, I’ve seen Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile and A Haunting in Venice, so now I want to write a fic where a (practically canonical) asexual Poirot can’t figure out why everyone is attracted to him for his body when he has a perfectly good brain and rather fine detective skills. Just because he has Kenneth Branagh’s stunning blue eyes, charming smirk, a dad bod, and thick hair doesn’t mean he’s some sort of sexual automaton! So obviously he simply must get to the bottom of this and figure out why people are driven to distraction over something as boring and mundane as sexual intercourse. By having sex with people. Purely and literally for scientific reasons. He does enjoy making lists and learning about people’s motivations after all!
And obviously—because he can read and understand people so well—he’s an amazing and thorough lover, which just makes everyone fall for him even more. And he’s like, “I knew you’d enjoy X because A, B, and C.”
I’m imagining Poirot being like, “While I’m flattered that you’d pledge your life to me as my submissive, I simply do not have the time or energy to take on anyone else at this time.”
And before the door politely closes in front of them, you hear a quietly stunned voice reply, “Wait, there are others!?”
Poirot catches the door in his hand, leaving it open a crack to reply.
“Madame, there are more than I know what to do with. If you know of any domineering types, here is my card. My hands and datebook are quite full.”
His social science experiment gets a little out of hand, and he goes through his notes and pairs people up that he knows will be good matches.

S5 Ep 42 Pt 1: It’s All In Your Head
Every week with long covid is like a new batch of symptoms. Last month’s symptom, among other things, was “words no work no good,” and so we just uh...didn’t do an update. I probably needed to chill and nap anyway. Not that I’m fully better yet, today I did laundry and pulled out a blue shirt that I clearly own and bought with my own money--but I have no memory of it. Zilch.
The brain is amazing, that with this brain fog, I can’t remember my blue t-shirt, but I can remember Yugioh. Weird, right? So anyway, thanks for your patience in this weird time of my life, glad to have a blog to write about anime in that is so chill with our very long breaks.
Also, I finally went through my old caps to toss old pictures so that way I can make new stuff, and guess what I just realized?
Tumblr media
Kisara is not a dragon!
Seto’s girlfriend isn’t a dragon! She’s just on top of the dragon, I can’t...I just can’t believe this.
Truly a crime that this season, the final ultimate season of Yugioh, is what I’m doing while on Long Covid fruitloops, so I can miss every damn point that this show fires at me. But, at least, I hope it’s funny to read. It is like every single update where I realize I was wrong about the obvious, and don’t worry, it’s gonna happen again in like 4 seconds. My borked brain.
Anyway, Yugi and Co have walked all the way to the palace. Because we’re still on S4 time and space conventions where Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, and San Fransisco are all next to each other. Like Yami fell in the Nile in a fight that was just outside of the city--but I assumed he got pulled way out there. Either way, it’s a kid’s show, never think about geography.
Tumblr media
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media
Yugi can conveniently walk through doors now, and after a quick shoutout to his homie Yami, they phase through.
Including Tristan who is...
Well,
APPARENTLY TRISTAN WAS POSSESSED.
Tumblr media
Freakin, my brain is a bunch of salad dressing, lmaoooo even last episode I was like “wow Tristan is drawn kinda evil and I don’t really get why” and it was RIGHT THERE. He’s been possessed probably since Bakura grabbed him by the neck right in front of me. I somehow missed this!
And like, I figure, if I try and wait out long covid it may take a whole other year, so like this is just me now. I started this blog as like a competent analysis (ish), and now I get to the end of S5 giving you just an incoherent rorschach. It’s kind of fitting for this show really, everyone has to end up at least a little bit of a mess. Keeps you humble. Even me. I also have to become the mess.
Anyway, speaking of becoming a babbling incoherent mess, we go back to Bakura, who has fully lost his game in Battle Basement of a 7 vs 1 game.
Only in Yugioh would they make a 7 vs 1 game feel evenly sided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as I wonder if I’ve already made that joke four months back and have forgotten, they all watch Bakura do a mad dash to screw them over one last time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And while they stood there and just allowed Bakura to fumble around with the doom rocks made of human souls, from no where, Aknadin stumbles through the door all day drunk like freakin Kramer.
Tumblr media
And no, in the show he did not reveal here that he was Seto’s dad, but he does in like 2 minutes so I didn’t really care about where I put it. The big thing is that Aknadin’s gone full-tilt cray and not even he can fully explain his motive anymore.
Tumblr media
That’s when they realize Aknadin’s babysitter, Shada, has been punk’d on the bottom of skull tablet basement. Which like, Imagine the day that Shada’s been having. I guess Aknadin just left him at the base of like 10000 human skulls then, hahaha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have checked my notes and I decided that 2000 people died in Kul Elna a few months back but eh I don’t feel like changing this cap. Overall, I have no freakin idea how many people lived in this freakin town and they can’t tell us because 4Kids would never allow it.
Which is when Bakura decided to teleport his bean into another bean because this bean is broke.
Tumblr media
Which is when we met this guy, a guy we’ve only met for like 4 seconds of the show so far. Hello there, Original Bakura.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Straight up, he wasn’t on screen long enough for me to over-analyze his accent before he was a small mound of dust on the floor.
Tumblr media
Ah the death count! Oh damn it, I write these notes on the caps sometimes, expecting I’ll put an actual number there later but lets be real, I just need to publish this episode, so let me open the Google doc...
7,805,847,572
Yeah that’s how many people have died in this kids show so far. We’re right on track. Thanks Bakura, for another death, but no you have not caught up with Dartz. Although I will hand it to him, Dartz didn’t end up killing himself nearly as many times as Bakura has.
Speaking of dying and being dead on a kid’s show, in enters Shada.
Tumblr media
So lets go see what Yugi’s up to hm? The four have decided to separate in this Egyptian palace to each find Yami’s name. Mind you...there’s some flaws with this plan.
Tumblr media
The flaw being that none of them have graduated high school or know freakin anything about Egypt, other than they hang out with an Ex patriot Egyptian. (2 ex-patriots if you count Yugi’s Grandfather. Although honestly, are you an ex-pat if you are reborn in a kid’s body on the other side of the world? You are, right? You are). But, whether or not Yami can or can’t read Egyptian in Canonical Yugioh, we know that Yugi apparently super can’t when Yami isn’t in his bean.
And Joey just can’t focus for the life of him, which, damn, relatable. But, he did find a room full of women.
Tumblr media
He also went to the only room with like lots of water. Real pissed focused mind here, and no the piss plotline will not be resolved.
Tumblr media
Tea, still GOAT.
Tumblr media
This castle, man. I love the complete disregard for interiors that this animation team has. Like...what even is the purpose of this weird maze room with masssssive stone tiles, Yugioh? Like...what is this even supposed to be? Why are the tiles so SHINY?
Anyway, lets go back to Shada and hear his excuse for what the hell happened last episode.
Tumblr media
Which is when Aknadin decided to just start cursing everyone, which he would have done earlier if he wasn’t constantly in a sick bed this season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This very well might be a yugioh card effect that turns you into a rainbow filter, but it also looks like a complete mess of artistic directions on the screen.
Which like, after that cutesy filter, lets pull our eyes out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is when Yami makes the biggest logical leap known to man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s right! Yami has figured out that this entire time, this entire arc, he’s been sleeping at this RPG table that Bakura’s built in his mom’s basement Yami’s Puzzle Necklace.
In fact, when Yami wakes up to all of this, wearing his normal ass school clothes, and Bakura sitting across from him in his popped collar duster jacket, Bakura says something on the line of “bout time you woke up.”
the fic shippers must have had a FIELD DAY with one.
Anyway, everything is a lie, Bakura is controlling people like puzzle pieces, which not only explains why Aknadin’s motives went a 180, but can lead us to believe that Yami also COULD control everyone else, but just chooses not to. Just like he does in real life.
I think, overall, you just have to go with it. We’re playing D+D, except it’s about your embarrassing past. Like if you made D+D about your middle school experience and you can’t remember your first name.
What a way to die, really. What a weird ass way for Yami to almost die.
Anyway, here’s a link for those new here to read these from the beginning. I have the 2nd part already drafted up, should be up in a few days and not an entire month, haha. Hope your 2023 is looking up!

Hi! It is just me or the last Luca/Marwan pic is giving such an omegaverse vibes? pregnant Omega Nicky (with a great ass) basking in the Sun while alpha Joe is trying to protect him
Sorry, nonny! You sent me this a while ago, but life has been pretty chaotic, so let it be known that I have been thinking about this ask ever since then and, in short, HELL YEAH The Pic has e v e r y t h i n g
Not only did it assure us all that Joe's precious curls are safe and LONGER, but also reminded this whole fandom of how privileged Nicky is in the ass department and, of course, I have to mention The Tummy™ ~ so you're absolutely correct, the omegaverse vibes are *:・゚✧perfect✧・゚:*
I can so easily imagine a scenario where alpha!Joe and omega!Nicky became infertile due to the whole immortal business, so they went through centuries without ever contemplating the possibility of having kids of their own and that was fine by them for they always had each other... but after Kozak's experiments something drastically changed and Nicky goes through the first full-blown heat since 1099 (which, hm, is basically the plot of a super fluff Christmas fic I wrote with the amazing @instantpeach back in December) and maybe Joe's rut aligns with it and boom -- Nicky is pregnant for the first time ever!
And Joe is obviously besotted by the news, and he can't quite believe it when Nicky finally tells him -- of course, he had sensed something was off when Nicky's scent abruptly changed -- but then after his suspicions are confirmed, Joe is not-so-secretly trying not to freak the hell out. It's all too new, and he is happy beyond words, but also so, so scared and Joe starts reading everything on the subject (with Nile and Copley's help), and man, if only Nicky would just let Joe take care of him, because what if something happens to them...
But Nicky-it’s-not-our-time-yet-Di-Genova pretty much believes everything is meant to be so ALL WILL BE WELL and how can Joe argue with his mate? Obviously, Nicky doesn't put himself through unnecessary risks, but just imagine it... Nicky has let his beard grow so they can be incognito for this new mission (it took Joe and Andy some convincing they should even take the mission, but Nicky and Nile won the argument in the end), and it's summer and there's a heatwave and now Nicky has cravings on top of everything else, so at some point he just gets up from the shade and starts walking towards a gelato stand without a mask on because his beard itches like hell and again, it's so hot, so Nicky also begins to remove his shirt so he can free his arms and be only on his t-shirt...
That's when he picks up Joe's sharp scent as his mate catches up with him, carrying an umbrella, and Nicky has to admit the shadow is very welcome, but Joe's presence is even more so. He smiles when he feels Joe's hand on the small of his back, and he wishes they were alone so Joe could touch his growing stomach as well... Nicky's bump is barely visible yet, but he has started to feel some movement for the past week and Nicky simply cannot wait for it to become strong enough so Joe can feel it too... ◕.◕
Well, thanks so much for the ask! I know I spent a couple of months without sharing any new omegaverse content, but thanks to one of my TOG Reverse Bang projects (in collaboration with the lovely @pochiperpe90) I am happy to announce I am back on my omegaverse bullshit (◕‿◕✿) and no, don't worry, my other omegaverse wip isn't abandoned, I promise I will get back to it as soon as possible!
---
Also, in a related-ish note, you know I went through my blog's archive to retrieve the link for the pic in question... and just look at the number of notes the post had right as I checked it?

Watching the Peter Ustinov Death On The Nile on Freevee. I've read the book and seen the Suchet adaptation, but this is the first time I've seen this one.
Spoilers follow
I like the quick-cut from Jackie & Simon kissing to Linnet & Simon's wedding.
Hey, filming at the Sphinx! (or a reasonable mockup)
Writer Salome Otterbourne being a lush wasn't clear until partway through the book. In this movie she's comically soused in every scene. And played by Angela Lansbury.
Bette Davis playing the rich American Mrs Van Schuyler, Maggie Smith as her butchish nurse-companion Miss Bowers.
Oh my, Linnet is suing Salome for defamation.
Salome's daughter is wondering if dead people can be defamed. (Aka, would Linnet's lawsuit end if she died)
Colonel Race is working for Linnet's British lawyers. They think her American lawyer, Pennington, is embezzling.
Linnet argues with her maid about a promised bonus.
Poirot notes Linnet is angering everyone.
Mia Farrow as Jackie is more effective than I expected.
Of its time: not only does the doctor have a black bag that allows him to dress Simon's bullet wound and give him morphia, the nurse, Miss Bowers, has morphia to give Jackie for hysteria.
Miss Bowers: I think a shot of morphia will meet the case. I've always found it very effective when Mrs Van Schuyler is carrying on.
Second "Belgian not French" reference.
I think the actors had fun filming the possible death scenarios. Bette Davis got to be a possible murderer! Angela Lansbury!
More "not French":
Andrew Pennington: It may be the custom in Paris to go through other people's things, but we're not in Paris now!
Hercule Poirot: Brussels, sir! The country is...
Miss Bowers on Jackie: "Nervous reaction, booze, and morphia, together they'd have sunk the Titanic."
Simon's cabin. Simon hasn't eaten his lunch. Race suggests Simon should eat, Simon says he can't. Poirot takes the tray to the table and tucks in!
"Belgian upstart, not French!"
Poirot (Peter Ustinov) and Race (David Niven) are quite the team.
From IMDb: during World War II, Major David Niven's batman (personal attendant) was Private Peter Ustinov.
More "Belgian!" references
Maggie Smith is amazing in her formal dinner jacket.

One Foot in the Fade commentary, pt4, spoilers
The interrogation 😮😮 I am in love with Khay, I need fanart of her immediately. Please step on me ma'am. 😳 She might actually be my second favorite character
"Close your eyes," I said. She did, and I blew a puff of air over her face to clear the dust away.
"Thanks," she whispered. "I'm really, really glad it wasn't the other kind of waste."
She opened her eyes. Only inches away.
"You all right?" I asked.
"I think so. How does it look?"
"Not like it'll kill ya."
"What a shame. You almost got yourself out of this mess at the last second." She gave a little smirk. "Weird to see your face this close. I'm used to staring at the back of your head."
I tried on a smirk myself. "That's my better angle anyway."
She laughed, and her big eyes gave that owl a run for its money.
"This side ain't so bad."
She stared at me for a while to watch the words sink in, then shook the dirt from her shoulders. Once she'd emptied the debris from her hood and pulled it back over her head, she tapped the side of my body like I was a horse she was coaxing into a canter.
"Up you pop. Your hard head can handle more hits than mine."
OH MY GOD THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. Fetch and Khay are qpp and no I will not be taking questions. It's going to end horribly and it doesn't matter that I know that I'm still not going to be ready
So much of this is a dnd campaign and I *love* it
General shout out again to the world building and the setting description and just... it's intense and amazing
Genuinely you could turn this into a D&D campaign. I bet he has notes and notes and notes on all of this. Probably just pages upon pages, because he is such a fucking nerd (affectionate)
After listening to it for so long,I think that Khay is the most soothing relaxing voice that he does and I love it to death. It might be my second favorite voice. Fetch is obviously the first favorite
Can we just go back to when I was fantasizing about Fetch between a werewolf and a genie instead of where we are climbing up the trash chute?
Lmao that's not the type of "man for hire sandwich" I was thinking of
LINDA!!!
Poor Fetch once again getting triggered as fuck by faerie corpses
Oh shit bro we got a whole damn pool of magic
Oh shit bro the plot it do be thickening
This just in Fetch is fighting The Rancor aka the Minotaur
The amount of action/fight blocking he has done in this book is really intense. They're easy to follow, which is harder than you think to write, to make something make sense and be easy to visualize with that many movements. Also narrated fantastically as always
Fetch having some gay thoughts in the middle of this fight about how alike he and Niles are 👀
It's making me Feelings that he's thinking about all of his different friends in the middle of this fight okay. And that all of their advice that he remembers is what helps him win 😭😭😭🥺🥺🥺
Thesis of this one is that you shouldn't try to fight alone 😭😭😭😭
The bit about Theo his latest mentor??? oh my God he's in love with that wolf. also that was a hell of a boss fight, that was a whopper of a fucking boss fight. Stunning work
Fetch literally falls in love with everyone he meets 🐶
Poor Theo 😭😭😭
But very sexy of him 🐺
Ahah! I knew the Bridge has something to do with this!
The betrayal
"I have full faith in Khay so I'm not listening to anything they're saying like Khay is my love and of course she only has good intentions and I would do anything for her" --Fetch probably
Jesus Christ this man was in a car accident, survived the first time by the skin of his teeth and was immediately like, "okay let's do that again that was fine." Literally the most dangerous thing ever. He may be thinking himself a little invincible after slaying a Minotaur though
We only stopped when we had to. No roadside taverns. No camps. We napped in the car until I'd rested enough to drive on, then we just kept going. We didn't have a lot to say to each other. No new stories to tell. We'd shared all our most recent memories, and they were still so overwhelming that I couldn't think about anything else.
At first, I worried about the silence. I thought she might be nervous or angry at me. Or bored - which would be worse - like I'd served my purpose. But then she'd comment on the sunset or point excitedly at some wildlife by the side of the road, or just look over and smile, and I'd relax. Relax more than I had in front of anyone in a long time. That's the mark of real friendship, I think: to be the person you are when you're alone, but in front of someone else. Just as free. Just as messy. The kind of friend where you don't have to stress over every little thing you say, because one little fuck-up in front of them won't make them think any worse of you. A single impressive act won't alter things either, because they've seen enough of your failings not to put you on a pedestal. They know you. The "you" beneath the bullshit. For better or worse, you can't impress or disgust them, you can't fool them or delude them, so you have no choice but to drop the act and enjoy the company. I was enjoying it so much that I felt sad when I saw a distant black shape at the end of the road.
Im fuckin crying bro this could be so terrible this is about to end badly
He's crying and so I'm crying
They're have a hooting and hollering good time but all I can hear is Georgio's silence
Khay and Eileen both confirmed bi
"What... what do you...? Why?"
"I agreed to help you help people. That's what you said you wanted to do. Some good, remember? This is not good."
I felt small. Flashbacks to being a kid with scraped knees and rips in my new school uniform, or a hungover teenager returning my adopted father's broken bike; the same shame, and the same panicked desperation to make things right.
"Georgio, this is what we were working towards. Khay can help people now. Really help them." He kept his eyes down, shaking his head. "We went out there to make things better."
"You went to WAR!" He was shaking. I'd never seen him this angry. Hell, I'd barely seen him frustrated. "You left your home to go and murder," he continued, his voice hushed to a chillingly measured tone. "You left your home to steal. You lost a good man and you killed a creature, the likes of which we may never see again."
"I know... I know, but if this works then it will be worth-"
"Nothing is worth this! Nothing. It will only bring more death. This started with death, don't you remember? Your friend." The image of Benjamin's smiling face forced its way into my mind. "There is so much death already, and you only want to make more. I will not help you do that."
My chest burned. I felt like I was about to cry, but I smothered it. If the first sob escaped my lips, a tidal wave would follow. I choked it down. Squashed it. Spoke clear.
"I'm doing what needs to be done, Georgio. I can't just sit back and let the world die. You might enjoy making people breakfast while the world burns, but I'm actually trying to make a difference. I'm sorry you don't want to be a part of that."
It was my cue to storm out, but I missed it. I guess I wanted him to say something else. To start shouting again. To smack some sense into me. Anything but to let me leave.
But he just said: "Go."
And I did.
Oh my fucking god, from where Giorgio and Fetch started and how fucking funny and wholesome it was in Last Smile to this breakup... dude I am inconsolable. also this is the Black Sails finale again "you went to war it's just death and death and death" I can hear Silver
This is going to make me SICK. I knew it was coming from the very beginning but I let myself forget. And I'm gonna LOSE IT
oh no babe ur moving like an herbivore
SIMMS! I love her so much, I love Luke’s lizard voice
"you're under arrest for accessory to murder"
“which one?” oh my god
Panic attack time~~
Love when Fetch gets fucked up by hot women, especially cat ones
this masochist with the electroplay lmao
loveloveloveeee listening to him *snarl* as Fetch, GOD IT’S SEXY
his voice is getting low and sad and it’s hurting me :(((((( :(((((( :(((((
im UPSET IM UPSETTTT IM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS
THIS IS HATEFUL IM HAVING A BAD TIME
“I’d sure as hell tried, hadn’t I?" MOTHERFUCKING LAST SMILE FIRST LINES REPRISE I FUCKIN YELLLINGGGGG
reiterating that guns were a MISTAKE
her voice is still so soothing. this might be the worst, most painful thing Luke’s ever done to me and I read DMIAD okay
WAS THAT A PROPHECY OR A FLASHBACK?? WHAT DOES IT MEAN??
also I keep having to watch Fetch kill ppl he loves and I’m SICK
Okay okay she did it herself. Not much better but not as bad as him having to stab her 🙃🙃🙃
I can hear in Luke’s voice that he is actually tearing up during this part and it is ripping my heart out
Holding her as she fades away... Finally getting to touch skin. This is laser targeted at me
said it before, will say it again, top tier vocal performance
OH THANK FUCK GEORGIO, I WAS HURTING. I’m still hurting but he walked it back
FETCH PHILLIPS, BARISTA
oh my god food as a love language I am FUCKING BAWLING
--
Okay guys, wow
WHAT A FUCKING ROLLERCOASTER
I am processing. But I think I might like this one the best
Fucking hell
I'm dubious as to whether he's actually going to give up the man for hire thing but... The lesson he learned this book was that small kindnesses make big change and that he doesn't have to go be a hero and slay a beast to help save the world
😭😭😭
No but when he called Richie at the end I fucking burst into tears
Round of applause for Luke and also I'm sending him a wasps nest

Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan, one of the world’s most pre-eminent and prolific scholars of African history, passed away early yesterday morning in New York City at the stunning age of 97.
It was only fitting that one of the most courageous and inspiring scholars of our time would live for nearly a century, paying personal witness to dramatic transformations in the lives of Black people across the globe. But more than anyone, Dr. Ben—as he was affectionally called by generations of his devoted followers—knew that a world transformed was not a world complete. Black people might have lifted themselves from widespread subjugation, but they still suffered and were far from the glorious civilizations in Africa about which Dr. Ben taught millions of eager charges.
One of his many specialties was the ancient civilization of Kemet in Egypt. He was one of the first true Egyptologists, before that title had even come into vogue. Dr. Ben was always a controversial figure because he had no interest in trying to placate white scholars or writers who were threatened by his claims about Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Because generations of white orthodoxy had moved the Western world to accept as fact questionable scholarship about the preeminence of European rulers and thinkers, Dr. Ben was always willing to take down these Western myths, one by one.
Dr. Ben turned 97 on New Year’s Eve and had plans to celebrate many more. But his friends took note of his diminishing appetite—though close colleagues like Dr. Leonard Jeffries and Prof. James Small were forced to go onto the Internet earlier this month to debunk rumors that he had already passed. At 3:30 am on Thursday morning, he bid his farewell.
“He was one of last great race men of his era,” Nayaba Arinde, Amsterdam News Editor, said on the Amsterdam News website. “He was a master teacher who just wanted to share our amazing African history. He was a man of the people. He was always amongst us, educating, and sharing. Sitting with him was a gift of tremendous proportions. He was loved, and he loved his people.”
He was like a library of African history onto himself, as if a wing of one of the world’s great research institutions had been poured into one brain and become ambulatory.
For those in the New York tri-state area in the 1970s and 1980s, he was a familiar presence and voice from his frequent appearances on Gil Noble’s weekly Black-focused television show “Like It Is” and on the Afrocentric radio station WLIB. It was an important time for him to spread his teachings about the glory of ancient African civilizations—coming out of the tumult of the Civil Rights Movement and the uplifting of the Black Power Movement, young Black people were eager to soak up his words, to extend their communion with their past far beyond the enraging lessons of slavery.
He often worked together with another legendary scholar, Dr. John Henrik Clarke, who died in 1998.
During his immense life, Dr. Ben journeyed from his birth in Ethiopia, to a Puerto Rican mother and an Ethiopian father, studying in institutions ranging from Puerto Rico to Cuba to Brazil to Spain. After earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, he went on to earn a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Havana, Cuba and then doctoral degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Moorish History from the University of Havana and the University of Barcelona, Spain.
He taught many years at such institutions as City College in New York City and Cornell University.
His authorship extended to 49 books, many focusing on Egypt and the civilizations of the Nile Valley.
In 2002, Dr. Ben—who lived in Harlem his later years—donated to the Nation of Islam his personal library of more than 35,000 volumes, manuscripts and ancient scrolls.
“Of all our greats, Dr. Ben physically took tens of thousands of scholars, activists, students and associations to the Nile Valley to make the pages of his book more authentic,” said his colleague, Reggie Mabry. “We saw our own experiences of what he wrote… For that the Black world is indebted to this Black man of the Nile and his family.”

VIP trip to Egypt - how to choose the best offer and what is worth seeing?
Tumblr media
A VIP trip to Egypt can be an amazing experience, allowing you to get to know the history, culture, and beauty of this country at the highest level. When choosing such a trip, it is worth considering several aspects that can affect the quality and value of such a trip. First of all, you should pay attention to the choice of a travel agency that will provide the best conditions and comprehensive service throughout the trip. The agency should offer high-quality services such as luxury hotels, comfortable flights, and transport, as well as the knowledge and experience of guides.
It is also worth paying attention to the program of the trip, which should be carefully planned and take into account the most important attractions and monuments of vip trip to Egypt. These include the pyramids of Giza, the Valley of Kings in Luxor, the Temple of Karnak, museums in Cairo, as well as a cruise on the Nile and evening performances with belly dance.
Also, note the additional options offered by the travel agency. One can mention here, for example, the possibility of private transfers, luxury spas, and beauty treatments, visits to luxury shops, as well as the possibility of participating in a culinary journey through Egyptian flavors. When it comes to the date of the trip, it is worth avoiding the summer period, which is characterized by very high temperatures and high costs. The winter months and early spring are better times when temperatures are milder and the landscapes of Egypt are still beautiful and full of life.
To sum it up, a VIP trip to Egypt can be an unforgettable experience, allowing you to get to know the history and culture as well as enjoy the beauty and luxury at the highest level. While choosing such a trip, pay attention to the quality of services offered by the travel agency, the program, additional options, and a good departure date.

What is Precognition - and what is NOT? Part 2
2 minutes and 34 seconds to read.
        Wednesday afternoon, 14 December 2022.
What is Precognition - and what is NOT? Part 2
Here I will review three dreams relating to the inexplicable. All involve fire.
One dream involves Carol, and another, Marilyn. They are half-sisters on my mother's side.
One of my earliest vivid dreams regarding what people might call "precognitive" was in 1965 when I dreamt about Carol's toaster catching fire. Even so, my dream was occurring about the same time it was occurring in reality, at her house (while I was at Marilyn's place at the time). It was on 25 September 1965. Carol had thrown her burning toaster into her bathtub with a wet towel around it.
Part of my dream replayed (with alterations integrating Carol into the narrative) the Beverly Hillbillies episode "That Old Black Magic" - that I had seen on 22 September. It may have been one of my first influences associating astrology with black magic (and evil) in a comedic way, but it was unrelated to the theme of a toaster fire.
In another dream, as an adult, I rapidly glided from Southside La Crosse to Northside La Crosse about a foot above the streets (taking the same route as if I was walking in waking life) in the late morning. I perceived myself as a flat, two-dimensional being, shaped like a cloverleaf, called a Jargon, about the size of a car. In my dream, I saw the underside of vehicles passing over me without incident.
Eventually, my dreaming mode and perceptual focus changes, and I appear to be a small presence (like a sentient spark) floating near Marilyn's left shoulder. My size orientation is wrong as if I was not much larger than an insect. The fuse box door is open, and a small fire is inside over one of the fuses in the upper left corner. Marilyn seems surprised at it.
When I visited Marilyn a few days later in waking life, I learned that a small fire had occurred in that exact location in the fuse box. Precognition? No, because it happened around the same time. What was the point of the first segment with the two-dimensional "Jargon" entity (especially considering the nature of it being an English word and not something foreign)? It was probably just a pointlessly surreal imaginary event as a precursor to a different mode of dreaming.
On the night of the day that I went with Jim (half-brother on my mother's side) to visit his friend Niles to look at his computer games, Niles died in an unusual fire. The insulation somehow caught fire, supposedly from exposed wiring. In my dream (that occurred during the event), the Loomis Street house (where I was sleeping) was superimposed over his. I saw the fire burn unusually along the ceiling. My mental voice noted this as if I was describing it without emotion. The newspaper article that reported the event mentioned how the ceiling burned unusually (though likely because of the insulation).
The last part may seem like precognition (especially as the news article's wording was the same). However, consider that the person reporting the event may have somehow picked up on what I was thinking earlier (regarding my thoughts corresponding with the fire) even though the real-world details were also a factor. There is no legitimate way to know for sure (regarding timing or who influenced who or what information came from where).
So far, I have reviewed five inexplicable experiences that could not have been solely coincidental. There are thousands more that I hope to review and examine more closely. None of them are similar to the generic childish blather that many people propagate - which pains me on some levels because I know they are not very bright - and their mindless blather is an embarrassment to Zsuzsanna and me.
In the first part of this series, I mentioned that many ignorant people claim that you "cannot read" in dreams, which is untrue (like virtually everything I read about dreams). Regarding this entry, there were people who came to me a few years ago saying how "amazing" I am because I can dream of fire (although this person seemed mentally disabled, to be honest - like many who approach me as such). Yes, believe it or not, many people claim a person "cannot dream of fire." I am supposed to put faith in humanity's "intelligence?" No, absolutely not.

Ted Lasso 2x11 thoughts
For an episode that ends with a journalist Ted trusts but has (understandably) recently lied to warning Ted that he’s publishing an article about his panic attacks, it was fitting that this episode seemed entirely about what all of these characters choose to tell each other. And after most of a season of television that Jason Sudeikis has described as the season in which the characters go into their little caves to deal with things on their own, it turns out they are finally able to tell each other quite a lot.
Which is good because, um, wow, a lot is going to happen in the season finale of this show!
Thoughts on the things people tell each other behind the cut!
Roy and Keeley. I absolutely loved the moment during their photoshoot in which they bring up a lot of complicated emotional things and are clearly gutted (“gutted”? Who am I? A GBBO contestant who forgot to turn the oven on?) by what they’ve heard. We already know that Keeley and Roy are great at the kinds of moments they have before the shoot begins, in which Roy builds Keeley up and tells her she’s fucking amazing. From nearly the beginning of their relationship, they’ve supported each other and been each other’s biggest fans. But their relationship has gone on long enough that they’ve progressed from tentative arguments about space and individual needs into really needing to figure out what they mean to each other and how big their feelings are and what that means in relation to everything else. Watching these two confess about the uncomfortable kiss with Nate, the unexpectedly long conversation with Phoebe’s teacher, and—most painfully—the revelation that Jamie still loves Keeley didn’t feel like watching two people who are about to break up. (Although I could see them potentially needing space from each other to get clarity.) It felt like watching two people realize just how much they’d lose if they lost each other, which is an understandably scary feeling even—or especially—when you’re deeply in love but not entirely sure what the future holds. Not entirely sure what you’re capable of when you’ve never felt serious about someone in quite this way, and are realizing you have to take intentional actions to choose that relationship every single day. I’m excited to learn whether Roy and Keeley decide they need to solidify their relationship more (not necessarily an engagement, but maybe moving in together or making sure they’re both comfortable referring to the other as partner and telling people they’re in a committed relationship) or if things go in a different direction for a while.
Sharon and Ted. I’ve had this feeling of “Wow, Ted is going to feel so intense about how honest he’s been with Sharon and is going to end up getting really attached and transfer a lot of emotions onto the connection they have and that is stressful no matter how beneficial it has been for him to finally get therapy!” for a while now. And Sharon’s departure really brought that out and it was indeed stressful. But the amount of growth that’s happened for both of these characters is really stunningly and beautifully conveyed in this episode. Ted is genuinely angry she left without saying goodbye, and he doesn’t bury it some place deep inside him where it will fester for the next thirty years. He expresses his anger. (I also noticed he sweared—mildly—in front of her again, which is really a big tell for how much he has let his carefully-constructed persona relax around her.) He reads her letter even though he said he wasn’t going to, and he’s moved. I don’t think Ted has the words for his connection to Sharon beyond “we had a breakthrough,” but Sharon gets it, and is able to firmly assert a professional boundary by articulating her side of that breakthrough as an experience that has made her a better therapist. And is still able to offer Ted a different kind of closure by suggesting they go out before her train leaves. No matter how you feel about a patient/football manager seeing their therapist/team psychologist colleague socially, I appreciated this story because IMO it didn’t cross big lines but instead was about one final moment in this arc in which both Ted and Sharon saw each other clearly and modeled what it is to give someone what they need and to expect honesty and communication from them. I liked that Ted ends up being the one saying goodbye. (The mustache in the exclamation points!) I like that whether or not Sharon returns in any capacity (Sarah Niles is so wonderful that I hope she does, but I’m not sure), the goodbye these characters forge for themselves here is neither abandonment nor a new, more complicated invitation. It’s the end of a meaningful era, and although the work of healing is the work of a lifetime, it’s very beautiful to have this milestone.
Ted and Rebecca. So, maybe it’s just me, but it kinda feels like these two have a few li’l life things to catch up on?! (HAHHHHHaSdafgsdasdf!) I really adored their interactions in this episode. I maintain that Biscuits With The Boss has been happening this whole time (even when Ted’s apartment was in shambles, there’s biscuit evidence, and I feel like we’ve been seeing the biscuit boxes in Rebecca’s office pretty regularly too), even if it might have been more of a drive-by biscuit drop-off/feelings avoidance ritual. It was really lovely to see Ted on more even footing in Rebecca’s office, joking around until she tells him to shut up, just like the old days. And GOSH—for their 1x9 interaction in Ted’s office to be paralleled in this episode and for Ted to explicitly make note of the parallel in a way Rebecca hears and sees and understands?! MY HEART. In both of Rebecca’s confessions, she is not bringing good news but it is good and meaningful that she chooses to share with Ted. In both situations, Ted takes the moment in stride and offers acceptance equivalent to the gravity of what she has to confess. And in both situations, he’s not some kind of otherworldly saint, able to accept Rebecca no matter what because he’s unaffected by what she shares. He is affected. When he tells her about Sam, you can see a variety of emotions on his face. Rebecca is upset and Ted is calm, and even if I might have liked for him to try to talk about the risk the affair poses to the power dynamics on the team or any number of factors, I also really liked that he just accepts where she is, and—most importantly—does not offer her advice beyond examining herself and taking her own advice. A massive part of being in a relationship with another person (a close relationship of any nature) is figuring out how to support that person without necessarily having to be happy about every single thing they do. It’s so important that Ted connects what she’s just told him about Sam back to what she told him last season about her plot with the club. These both feel like truth bombs to him, and he is at least safe enough to make that clear. These are both things that impact him, things that shape how he sees her and maybe even how he sees himself. He cares about her and is capable of taking in this information; he has room for it. But it’s not something he takes lightly, and neither does she. See you next year.
Tumblr user chainofclovers and the TV show Ted Lasso. My brain is going wild thinking about all the ways the next “truth bomb” conversation could go in 3x11 or whatever. Maybe they go full consistent parallel and Rebecca confesses something else, this time about her and Ted or some other big future thing that impacts him as much or more as the other confessions have. (The same but different.) Maybe the tables turn and Ted has something to confess to her. While the 1x9 conversation ended in an embrace and the 2x11 conversation ended with a bit more physical distance (understandable given the current state of their relationship and the nature of the discussion), the verbal ending of both conversations involved voices moving into a sexier lower register while zooming in to talk specifically about their connection to each other, so I have to assume there will be some consistencies in s3 even if the circumstances will be completely different. I don’t really know where I’m going with this and I obviously will go insane if I sustain this level of anticipatory energy until Fall 2022 but I have a feeling my brain and heart are going to try!
Sam and Rebecca. I know there’s been a lot of criticism about whether this show is being at all realistic about the power dynamics and inevitable professional issues this relationship would create. On some level, I agree; I like that pretty much everyone who knows about the affair has been kind so far, but you can be kind and still ask someone to contend with reality. But I also think that in nearly every plot point on this show, the narrative is driven by how people feel about their circumstances first and foremost. (It’s why the whiteboard in the coaching office and the football commentators tell us more about how the actual football season is going from a points perspective than anyone else.) This episode reminded me how few people know about Sam and Rebecca, and how much their time together so far has been time spent in bed. The private sphere. I thought this episode really expertly brought the public sphere into it, not—thank goodness—through a humiliating exposure or harsh judgment but through an opportunity for Sam that illustrates not only all his potential to do great things but how much Rebecca’s professional position and personal feelings are in conflict with that. Could stand in the way of that. I don’t have a strong gut feeling about where this will go, but I do think Sam’s face in his final scene of this episode is telling. He started the episode wanting to see Rebecca (his most recent text to her was about wanting to connect), and Edwin’s arrival from Ghana really exploded his sense of what is possible for his life. If he’d arrived home to Rebecca sitting on his stoop prior to meeting Edwin, he’d have been delighted. Now he’s conflicted, and whatever decision he makes, he has to reckon with the reality that he cannot have everything he wants. No matter what. And Rebecca—she has taken Ted’s advice and is attempting to be honest about the fact that she can’t control Sam’s decisions but hopes he doesn’t go, and even saying that much feels so inappropriate. And I’m not sure how much she realizes about the inappropriateness of the position she’s putting him in, although maybe she’s getting there considering she exits the scene very quickly. I’ve honestly loved Rebecca’s arc this season. I think it’s realistic that she got obsessed with the intimacy she thought she could find in her phone. I think it’s realistic that her professional and personal ambitions are inappropriately linked. (They certainly were for Rupert. It’s been years since she’s known anything different; even if she’s done some significant recovery work to move on from her abusive marriage and figure out her own priorities, she’s got a long way to go.) I know there are people who will read this interaction between Rebecca and Sam as a totally un-self-aware thing on the part of “the show” or “the writers” but what I saw is two people who enjoyed being in bed together and now have to deal with the reality that they’re in two different places in their lives and that one has great professional power over the other. If that wasn’t in the show, I wouldn’t be able to see it or feel so strongly about it.
Edwin and Sam. I really enjoyed all the complexities of this interaction. Edwin is promising a future for Sam that doesn’t quite exist yet, though he has the financial means to make it happen. He offers this by constructing for Sam a Nigerian—and Ghanaian—experience unlike anything he’s found in London. Sam is amazed that this experience is here, and Edwin’s response is to explain to him that the experience is not here. Not really. The experience in Africa. Sam has of course connected to the other Nigerian players on the team, but this is something else entirely. I’m really curious if Sam is going to end up feeling that what Edwin has to offer is real or not. That sense of home and connection? So real. And so right that he would want to experience that homecoming and would want to be part of building that experience for others. But at the end of the day, he went to a museum full of actors and a pop-up restaurant full of “friends,” and is that constructed authenticity as a stand-in for a real homecoming more or less real than the home he’s building in Richmond? (With other players who stand in solidarity with him, and with well-meaning white coaches who say dumb stuff sometimes, and an a probably-doomed love interest, and a feeling that he should put chicken instead of goat in the jollof, and the ability to stand out as an incredible player on a rising team.)
Nate and everyone. But also Nate and no one. Nate’s story is so painful and I’m so anxious for next week’s episode. For a long time I’ve felt that a lot of Nate’s loyalties are with Richmond, and a lot of his ambitions are around having given so much to this place without getting a lot back, and having a strong feeling that he’s the answer to Richmond’s future. But now I’m not so sure; his ambitions have transferred into asking everyone he knows (except Ted, of course), if they want to be “the boss.” But Nate is all tactics and no communication. When he wants to suggest a new play to Ted, he hasn’t yet learned to read Ted’s language to learn that Ted is eager to hear what he has to say. And while Ted has been really unfortunately distracted about Nate and dismissive of him this season, he clearly respects Nate’s approach to football and was appreciative of the play. Nate just can’t hear that. The suit is such a great metaphor of all the things Nate is in too much pain to be able to hear clearly. Everyone digs at him for wearing the suit Ted bought him (including Will, who’s got to get little cuts in where he can, because he’s got to be sick of the way Nate treats him), but when he gets fed up his solution isn’t to go out on his own and find more clothes he likes; he asks Keeley to help him. And then crosses a major line with her...and no matter how kind she was about it, she was clearly not okay. Everything is going to blow up, and I’m so curious as to whether Nate will end up aligning himself with Rupert in some way or if he’s going to end up screwed over by Rupert and in turn try to screw over his colleagues even worse than he’s already done. Or try desperately to make amends even though it could be too late for some. Either way, I’m fully prepared to feel devastated. (And there’s no way I’m giving up on this character. If he’s able to learn, I truly believe he could end up seeking forgiveness and forging a happier existence for himself. Someday. Like in season 3 or something.)
Ted and Trent. Trent deciding to reveal his source to Ted is a huge deal, and I’m torn between so many emotions about this exposé. I’m glad it’s a Trent Crimm piece and not an Ernie Loundes piece. I’m glad that Trent made the decision to warn Ted and let him know that Nate is his source. I fear—but also hope—that this exposure will set off a chain reaction of Ted learning about some of the things he’s missed while suffering through a really bad bout with his dad-grief and panic disorder. The things Ted doesn’t know would devastate him. I wonder if Ted will want to figure out a way to make Nate feel heard and reconcile with him, and I wonder how that will be complicated if/when he realizes Nate has severely bullied Will, gets more details on how he mistreated Colin, etc. I wonder if Rebecca, whom Nate called a “shrew” right before she announced his promotion, will be in the position of having to ask Ted to fire him, or overriding Ted and doing it herself. So many questions! I have a feeling it’ll go in some wild yet very human-scaled, emotionally-nuanced direction, and I’ll be like “Oh my GOD!” but also like “Oh, of course.”
This VERY SERIOUS AND EMOTIONAL REVIEW has a major flaw, which is that none of the above conversations include mention of the absolute love letter to N*SYNC. Ted passionately explains how things should go while dancing ridiculously! Will turns on the music and starts gyrating! Roy nods supportively! Beard shouts the choreography like the Broadway choreographer of teaching grown men who play football how to dance like a boy band. Everyone is so incredibly proud when they nail it. I love them.
I cannot believe next week is the end. For now. I’m kind of looking forward to letting everything settle during the hiatus, but I’ve really loved the ride.

An exercise in futility.
Summary/Snippet: “Did you think it hadn’t been tried, Booker?” Booker blinks, slowly turning to face Nicky.
“What?”
“Did you really think it hadn’t been tried? That everything hadn’t been tried? Everything that woman did, every experiment she ran. None of it is new.”
TW: self-harm, medical experimentation (nothing graphic), body horror, self-hatred, suicidal ideation
This is based on a headcanon by @dearpatroclus which you can read here, so thank you to them! Thank you also to @socvrates for the amazing beta, and to @shaolinqueen for the brainstorming, and for the line “Maybe next time, habibi” because it crushed me and so I included it.
Everything below the cut.
Part 1: Booker
“Did you think it hadn’t been tried, Booker?” Booker blinks, slowly turning to face Nicky.
“What?”
“Did you really think it hadn’t been tried? That everything hadn’t been tried? Everything that woman did, every experiment she ran. None of it is new.”
“You’ve been… wait no, you haven’t been taken in the past 200 years, I would have known about it. Science has changed, Nicky. There’s so much that they can do now that they couldn’t do in the 1700s. You don’t know -”
Nicky says nothing. He turns to face Booker, his eyes dark.
“I would have known…” Booker tries again, losing steam when Nicky continues to look at him with a carefully blank face. His shoulders slump. “When were you taken? Where? Was it you? Was it Joe? Andy? Was it when I was in Shanghai in ‘89? Or  Rennes in ‘27? Why didn’t you tell -”
“We weren’t taken, Booker. Or at least, nothing you don’t know about.”
Booker straightens up again. “Well then how would you know - ?”
“I tried it.”
“What?”
“I tried it myself.”
Booker looks at him in confusion. “What do you mean you tried it yourself?”
“I did the research myself.”
Booker knows there’s something that Nicky isn’t saying (as there tends to be with Nicky, his words always hinting at depths he won’t say) but it’s just out of reach, his mind failing to put it together.
Nicky pushes himself up off of the porch step and heads back inside, the door swinging shut behind him.

Part 2: Nile
They’re in an apartment by the Bay of Naples when Nile finds them. It’s an old property, definitely older than Nile (as most things are), and the things scattered around the house show it. The pots are old, the fireplace is well-used, and some of the clothes that Joe pulls out of the closet look like they’re from the wrong century (they just might be).
It looks innocent enough, at first. In an alcove off of the living room there’s a tall bookshelf, full to bursting. Nile hesitates. They’ve told her time and time again that what’s theirs is hers now, but these old books, clearly well-worn and often looked through, feel personal. She leans closer, hesitant to touch anything. Some of them have titles still legible on the spines. Others are too worn to read, while others still don’t appear to have anything written on the spines at all.
There are a few worn classics in Italian, English, and French that Nile recognizes.
Boccaccio, Shakespeare, Hugo, Rabelais.
There are others in languages Nile can’t read.
Curious and vaguely emboldened, Nile pulls out one of the unmarked books.
The only things she really understands are the dates on some of the pages. There are a few drawings that might have been done by Joe, but most of the book is filled with what Nile recognizes as Nicky’s hand.
She thinks it’s in Latin. It might be in Italian, but she suspects it’s too old of a form for her to read with her limited skills. Flipping through a few more pages and unable to really make out anything meaningful, she carefully closes it and puts it back on the shelf, picking up another.
The next one is much the same.
The pictures, scarce though they are, seem scientific, medical. She knows that Nicky has a medical degree - possibly more than one. Maybe he wrote something and Joe did the drawings for him.
It isn’t until the fifth book that the language starts to tend toward a recent enough form that Nile can make some things out between her recently acquired Italian skills and the Spanish she learned in high school. Between that and the obvious progress over the tomes in methodicity and organization, Nile realizes what she’s looking at.
They’re records of experiments.
She feels dread building in her stomach as she sits heavily on the couch, unable to tear her eyes away. There are a few times she needs to pull out her phone to check a translation but it becomes very clear what the experiments were about: they were experiments on immortality.
Nicky experimented on someone - and given what she knows about the immortal… community, or lack thereof? It must have been Joe or Andy or Booker.
She sits in silence, trying to understand.
Kind Nicky, gentle Nicky, very-much-the-mom-friend Nicky, had it in him to cut out pieces of his friends. It doesn’t feel right. Didn’t doctors take an oath to “do no harm”? She supposes it didn’t stop Kozak, and she knows that anything that was done would heal instantly, but the idea of Nicky taking a blade to Joe or Andy or Booker willingly unsettles Nile deeply.
And based on the number of books here (and Nile is sure that, with the number of properties they have around the globe, this isn’t the only stash of them), Nicky did a lot.
The notes are meticulous, and even with the language barrier Nile gets a pretty good idea of the extent to which Nicky went. Even though they heal, it feels wrong.
She hears the padding of footsteps on the stairs and she can’t help but hope that it isn’t Nicky. She isn’t sure if she can face him just yet - if she can handle how much her perception of him has changed.
She lets out a breath of relief when she sees that it’s Joe. When he sees her sitting on the couch he immediately beams at her, and she feels guilt rush through her when his face drops as he notices the book on her lap.
She shouldn’t have looked.
For a moment, he doesn’t move. Then he huffs out a breath before calling out “Tea?” and heading to the kitchen without waiting for an answer.
Nile doesn’t know if she can stomach tea.
---
When he comes back he places both teacups on the coffee table before carefully taking the book out of her hands, closing it, and putting it back on the shelf. She notices that he does it all without even looking down at the page. He keeps his gaze averted as if he can’t bear to look at it.
She’s speaking before she can stop herself. “Was it you?”
Joe freezes midway from the shelf to the couch.
“What?”
Nile gestures vaguely. “The… the book. Was it you?”
Joe frowns. “What? No… I mean… Nicky wrote it. He’s the one with the medical training, you know that.”
Nile blinks. “I mean… who did he… who did he experiment on. Was it you? I just… I can’t imagine he would, on you… and so much, too. Even on Andy, or Booker, I...”
Joe’s expression shutters. He doesn’t say anything for a long moment before hesitantly walking the rest of the way back to the couch and sitting down beside her.
He stares down at his own hands, fiddling with one of his rings. “Nicky never touched us.”
That does not make Nile feel better. She squeezes her hands together to stop them from shaking. If he wasn’t experimenting on immortals, then that only left… “He - he must have killed them.”
Joe whips his head around to face her. “What?”
“I… I know I didn’t understand everything, but some of the things he did, there’s no way they made it. He was just… just killing them. For the sake of what, science? Nicky? I never - ”
Joe cuts her off with a quick shake of his head, taking her hand in his.
“No.”
“Joe, have you read those? Even with my shitty Italian and no medical degree I can tell that -”
“No.”
Nile softens. She knows denial. Nicky’s been the love of his life for 900 years. “Joe…”
Joe clears his throat uncomfortably, giving her hand a squeeze. “I’ve read them, Nile. I did the art… when I could handle it.” She waits, sensing he has more to say. “But… Nile… he didn’t hurt anybody else.” She opens her mouth, about to argue that it’s impossible when he continues, “The point was to test immortality, test how it can be… what it can do. If it can be harnessed. Testing mortals would have been pointless.”
“But you said he didn’t touch you. He clearly experimented on someone, Joe, he -”
“He refused to hurt anyone else.”
Nile blinks, confused, but Joe doesn’t say anything else. He lets go of her hand and goes back to playing with his rings, but Nile can see the anguish written all over his face. She reaches out a tentative hand to rest on his back, unsure how to comfort him, or even, really, what she’s comforting him for.
“Joe…” But then, what he said seems to settle in her mind. “He didn’t hurt anyone else.” Joe nods, doesn’t look at her. “He didn’t hurt anyone else,” Nile continues. She thinks she’s going to be sick. “All of that… all of that, he did to himself?”
Joe doesn’t respond. He doesn’t need to.
-----
Part 3: Joe
Joe loves and hates medical breakthroughs. He loves them because, having lived for so long, it’s such an amazing thing to see things that used to cause so much suffering no longer need to. He loves how many unfathomable things have become possible.
He hates them because every time something groundbreaking is published, Nicky gets a distant look in his eyes. Then come the days of scouring the literature, the planning, the hypothesizing. Nicky sinks into a dark hole that will only get darker, and Joe has to try to press food into his hands and drag his love to bed because if he didn’t, he knows Nicky wouldn’t stop to breathe.
What Joe hates most is that working himself to the bone is hardly the worst thing that Nicky will do to himself when he gets into it.
He hates that he knows that nothing he says will dissuade Nicky from desperately destroying himself.
He hates that all he can do is wait until he sees in Nicky’s eyes that it won’t work - until he sees that Nicky knows (however much he doesn’t want to admit it) that he’s tried everything, and that continuing is pointless.
He hates that even though, in the back of his mind, Nicky knows he’s done, he will continue regardless, doing the same thing over and over, still hoping for a different outcome. He hates that all he can do is pull the notebook out of Nicky’s trembling hands, press a kiss to his forehead, and brush back his sweaty hair before putting a hand under his elbow and helping him to his feet.
“Maybe next time, habibi. For now, sleep.”
-----
Part 4: Andy
Healing is exhausting. The human body (even the immortal one) needs fuel. It needs rest.
It isn’t meant to be taken apart over and over, no matter how seamlessly the skin grows back.
After she walks in to find Nicky focused over a piece of his own liver, a frenzied, desperate look in his eyes for the umpteenth time, his cheeks gaunt and his face pale, she realizes the best and worst part of the progression of humanity is science.
It’s not the first time he’s gotten like this, and she’s sure that it won’t be the last.
She knows that Nicky carries guilt. She knows that horrors from his first life still haunt him in his dreams, and that he still sees himself as responsible for the atrocities committed centuries ago at Jerusalem.
She suspects that, in everything that he does, a part of Nicky is still trying to atone - a part of him still sees himself as owing penance.
She suspects that, in the deepest part of his heart, Nicky hates himself a little
She suspects that this will never really change..
She knows that no amount of pleading, of Joe’s tears, of reminders that nothing has ever worked, will stop Nicky from desperately hoping that this time, this time he can pull something out of himself that will save the world.
She has offered, Joe has offered, every time Nicky is convinced that something is different, now - that humankind has what it needs, to make it work this time - to be the sample, to be the source.
Nicky took a scalpel to Andy’s skin once with a quivering hand before leaving to throw up.
“You’ve cut me in training before. You don’t need to keep hurting yourself.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
“It’s different.”
“How?”
“What if… what if it’s the last time and I did it on purpose?”
“What if it’s your last time?”
Nicky turns away without a word, but Andy hears the “it wouldn’t matter” all the same.
