Ho? Ho ho ho? Already! Damn, the infidels are your pain in the ass… First Halloween, then Thanksgiving, and now it's Christmas. Your perpetually stoned and drunk roommate is constantly listening to remixes of Christmas classics, drinking eggnog and hanging up the colorful lights his mom sent him along with gingerbread and Christmas cookies. You swear the next time you hear "Last Christmas", you'll run amok. Somehow everyone here expects that from a Muslim like you anyway. Especially during Advent.
All you want is to finish your degree as quickly as possible and get back home to Egypt. With a computer science degree from the USA, you're king there. And finally far away from the infidels again. And thank Allah you don't make half as much fuss about Eid as the infidels here do about Christmas.
"All I want for Christmas is you…" Shit, are you already humming along to the music? No wonder, it's the purest brainwashing. But the music isn't bad. And be honest: you had a Christmas tree at home in Minnesota in December. Your parents emigrated to the USA 20 years before you were born. Of course you are circumcised. But you're basically a corn-fed guy from the Midwest.
Damn, your mom's cinnamon stars are the best cookies of all. The recipe is still from your great-grandmother from Swabia. Old family tradition. Even your father couldn't resist it. Perhaps you inherited the black hair and brown eyes from his ancestors in Egypt. But basically, you grew up in the traditions that your mother's family brought to the farm from Germany generations ago.
What you hate about Christmas is writing Christmas cards. But your family expects it. Your father's parents in particular, who once again can't come for Christmas and will be celebrating far away in Malmö, would be very unhappy if they didn't receive a card. You make every effort to write in correct Swedish. Speaking is admittedly better. It was cool to grow up as a blond boy trilingual in German, Swedish and English. They always called you "The Hun" or "The Viking" in football. Who cares, your qualities as a linebacker got you the scholarship after all.
Ho! You can hear your stupid, musky-smelling, muscle-bound roommate outside in the hallway. He's on the wrestling team. Not really in your league. But he sucks damn well. The door opens. You're prepared. Or rather, decorated.
Tumblr media
"Ho ho ho, Dasher! I've hidden a present for you!" Your roommate gets down on one knee without hesitation. You love the Christmas season!

The Twelve Myths of Christmas
The first myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
The 'Christmas is pagan' meme was invented twice. Once by Naturalistic approaches to ancient religions in the 1800s (Invictus, sun cults); once by the Puritans in 1600s England (Saturnalia, Yule).
Mainstream scholars haven't taken Naturalism seriously since the 1920s. And no one should ever take Puritan propaganda at face value.
Tumblr media
The second myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Christmas was assigned to a traditional date for the solstice, for several spurious reasons, but pagan festivals weren't one of them.
The only reason to assume 'solstice' means 'pagan' is because Naturalism told you so. (Or the Puritans.)
Tumblr media
The third myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Christmas trees originated in Lutheran Germany in the 1500s. Their origins are firmly Christian. No one's ever traced a sensible historical link from any pagan sacred tree to 16th century Christmas trees.
The fourth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
St Boniface didn't invent Christmas trees in 723. Willibald's story is simply that Boniface chopped down an oak sacred to Jupiter -- to destroy it.
There's no way to draw a link between that and Lutheran decorated trees 800 years later.
The fifth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Santa isn't Odin.
This idea was invented by a 1902 book about Dutch customs, then popularised by a Wikipedia editor in 2010.
Odin's horse didn't fly, and Santa didn't have reindeer until the 1820s. The reindeer were invented in New York.
Tumblr media
The sixth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Christmas isn't based on Yule.
Yule was a mediaeval Germanic name for the winter months. We see it in north Germanic sources from the 700s onwards; its earliest appearance is in a Christian calendar dating to the 500s.
Christmas had been a Mediterranean-wide festival for 300 years by that point.
The seventh myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
The 'Yule log' isn't pagan. It isn't even a Yule custom. One scholar, Ronald Hutton, puts its origins in 1800s England, but it's a bit older: Robert Herrick mentions it in the 1600s.
Herrick calls it a 'Christmas log'. Guess who renamed it a 'Yule log'? Answer: the Puritans.
The eighth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Christmas isn't based on a 25 December Sol Invictus festival.
The 25 December date is first reported by Hippolytus of Rome in the early 200s, and was celebrated all over the Roman empire. The Invictus festival (not 'Sol' Invictus) appears in only one document ever, dating to 354, and was specific to Rome.
The ninth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Christmas isn't based on Mithras, Horus, or the Ptolemaic Kikellia. Mithras and Horus didn't have birthdays. Kikellia was confined to a single location: Alexandria, Egypt (like Invictus in Rome). Christmas was pan-Mediterranean by the 200s.
The tenth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
While we're at it, 'Xmas' isn't an attempt at secularisation. It's a Christian abbreviation.
The X stands for Χριστός ('Christ'). It comes from an abbreviation convention in ancient Christian manuscripts, called a nomen sacrum ('sacred name'), perhaps with some influence from the chi-rho monogram shown below (Χρ = Χριστός).
Tumblr media
The eleventh myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
Christmas trees, wreaths, presents, cards, and flying reindeer are all modern developments. In England they caught on in the early 1800s. Most of them are Lutheran in origin … that is to say, Protestant. The reindeer are an American innovation.
The ancient bits of Christmas are the bits in the nativity story. The ox and ass, the cave, the … midwife? (None of these are in the Bible. But they are ancient!)
Tumblr media
The twelfth myth of Christmas my true love told to me…
There isn't a nativity story in the Bible. There are two. And they're completely different. They have some motifs in common -- angels, dreams, Bethlehem -- but they incorporate them in different ways.
The idea of synthesising them into a single story is ancient, though. It was first done in a 2nd century text, the Protevangelium of James, which also introduced the cave and the midwife. (The ox and ass came later.)

A completely unneccesary analysis of James Potter’s wand.
You know I used to be a huge harry potter fan as a teen, when I was 11-15 years old I had a harry potter bedroom, like I was totally obsessed. But in my later years, whilst I still have a special place in my heart for that magical world, I haven’t been as obsessed. Well my niece has just discovered harry potter, she’s reading the books and watching the films and having discovered from my sister my past obsession she often likes to chat with me about harry potter and its kind of reignited my love for the world and the characters. Anyway getting to the point, she wants a wand replica for xmas and she really loves the marauders (I mean who wouldn’t they’re awesome) so I was looking on the noble collection website, and there are so many more character wands than there were when I was a kid, including James Potter’s wand and when I first saw it I was a little surprised and taken aback and was left with a burning question. So this is what James Potter’s wand looks like for those who haven’t seen it:
Tumblr media
What’s with the spider webs? That was my first thought when I saw the wand. To me I always thought the wands matched the characters in some way, like their personalities, I think most of the time you can look at the wands and go yeah I can see so and so character with that wand, if I am making sense there, when I saw the replica for Sirius’ wand my immediate thought was ‘that wand is very sirius black’, the same with the other marauders but when I saw James’ I was a bit baffled. At first I just couldn’t see any connection between James and spider webs. It just seemed odd to me. So I did what I always do, thought way too much about it and became obsessed with finding the answer to why on earth does James Potter have spider webs on his wand? I actually found some really interesting connections though, so I decided I’d share them all with you.
The first thing that is interesting is that spiders and their webs are symbolic of transmutation (the conversion of one species into another or the action of changing into another form). This is interesting of course because James is an animagus but also because he was particularly adept at transfiguration. In the first book Ollivander even mentions this about James’ wand:
"Your father, on the other hand, favoured a mahogany wand. Eleven inches. Pliable. A little more power and excellent for transfiguration.”
So in this sense the spider webs on his wand make alot more sense to me. But there are even more connections that can be made.
Spiderwebs are also connected to Halloween, if you picture halloween night there are always spiderweb decorations, in fact when I think of halloween spider webs are one of the first things that come to mind. Again this is significant to james, sadly, because it was on halloween night that he died protecting his family, we also know that when he died he had left his wand behind on the sofa having thrown it down after entertaining his son with it, in his rush to protect his family he left it behind and left himself completely vulnerable.
One other connection I found is a story about Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The story goes that when fleeing Egypt Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus hid from Roman soldiers in a cave. A little spider then wove a web across the cave mouth to help hide them from the soldiers, who saw the web and so assumed that no one could be in the cave as the web was not broken. I couldn’t help but see the similarities between this story and Lily, James and Harry’s story. They too hid from someone who was hunting them. In their story the spider web was the Fidelius charm. A kind of illusion of deception that helped them hide.
Spider’s also symbolise fate and mortality. These are two things that have a definite connection to the Potters. Their tragic deaths are a reminder throughout the books of the characters’ mortality, a morbid reminder that death could come at any moment, that its inevitable for us all. Lily and James were a young couple who were shown to be brave and good but who died too young. But there is also that element of fate that surrounded the Potter family thanks to Professor Trelawney’s prophecy. That prophecy sealed the Potter’s fates and was what caused Voldemort to come after them in the first place, it even continues onto their son Harry who becomes Fated to be the one to destroy Voldemort.
Creativity is another symbolism of spiders and their webs. This is another connection to James that goes back to his identity as one of the Marauders. He is a creator, one of the creators of the Marauders’ Map. This map plays a significant role throughout the books and becomes a very useful tool for James’ son.
And lastly there was one more connection I found between James Potter and Spiderwebs and its, well, connections. Yet another thing spiderwebs are symbolic of, a web is a series of connections all woven together. You could argue that the Potters are the centre of many connections throughout the harry potter series. There’s the connection between their sacrifice and the magic that protects Harry, the connection between Voldemort and Harry’s scar that was formed the night the Potters died, the connection between James and the Marauders and the Map, between James’ animagus form and Harry’s Stag patronus and Lily’s doe patronus which leads to Snape’s doe patronus. The connection between The Potters and the Longbottoms and how both couples suffered tragic fates that left two boys behind and how that connects to the prophecy and the ourney both boys take throughout the series. The connection between the story of the deathly hallows and how both James and Harry are descendants of the third Peverell brother and the invisibility cloak that was passed down their family. I could go on and on as there are endless connections that could be found but those are a few.
So anyway, Like I said I have thought about this way too much but I am satisfied now that I have found the answer as to why their are spiderwebs on James’ wand and I actually do think it fits with his character really well afterall. If this is something people find interesting though I am more than willing to analyse other characters’ wands as I had a surprising amount of fun researching and analysing spiderwebs and thinking about James’ character etc so if there is any character’s wand in particular that you want me to do an analysis off just let me know in the comments.

dull morning rain in the night and this morning recently A- came in ready for church at 8 ½ or later – I fear there was a little rain before she could reach the school (she walked) – F55 ½° at 9 10 am breakfast at 10 10 – breakfast at 10 ½ in about ½ hour – before and after till 2 read from p. 42 to 173 vol. 3 Edinburgh cabinet Library, Egypt – very interesting – John drove the gray in the market cart and the 3 women servants and Mrs. Heap leaving Oddy at home to church 1st time – off at the same time as myself who took little Mary at 1 20 – no! the market cart was just behind me but I had just turned the corner into the is-to-be laundry court when I heard all was not right – alighted – found the gray had jibbed – kicked and broke the shafts of the market cart, and upset it and all the women all much frightened – nobody hurt but Mrs. Heap who had hurt her wrist – she looked pale and sick – I saw the wrist swelling a little, but the joint moved without giving her much pain, and I just rubbed the part (or rather dabbed on gently with my fingers) a little brandy and bandaged it comfortable up with a broadish black riband and sent John Booth for Mr. Jubb apprehending a very bad sprain at least – Susan had torn her gown so much could not go to church – took Cookson inside, and Sarah with John Burton the footman who came last night and off to church about 1 35 – there before 3 at H-x but Mr. Wilkinson was reading the 1st lesson – did all the duty – preached 18 minutes from John xiii. 3 – A- told me after service her aunt was very poorly – evidently indigestion from eating salmon at dinner – stopt a moment at the school to leave A- busy with Mrs. Ann Lee and Mrs. Hutchinson about the clothing department – took little Mary and drove to Cliff hill – Mrs. AW- said she was better but found her troubled with expectoration, or watery sickness – sent little Mary to Betty in 6 or 7 minutes and I sat 10 or 12 minutes longer and then drove off to the school for A- I had told Mrs. AW- I should like A- to get from home for a little while but that if Mrs. AW- was not better – or if she wished us not to go, we should not go – sent A- back alone to read her aunt Mrs. Sutherland’s letter and waited A-‘s return at the school – she was back in 20 minutes at 5 5 – home about 6 ½ - Mr. Jubb himself had been – Mrs. Heap’s arm broken – Mr. J- will come tomorrow – A- wrote note to him to go and see Mrs. AW- tonight and I wrote on the back ‘Mrs. Lister will be much obliged to Mr. Jubb to call at Shibden hall, on his return from Cliff hill, if he can’ – answer would go to Cliff hill tonight but could not come here till early morning – Saw Mrs. Heap – told her I congratulated her upon her arm being broken rather than her wrist badly sprained – but she seemed low, and was in tears – I cheered her as well as I could – dinner at 6 ½  - no coffee but tea at 8 – grieved about poor Mrs. Heap – came upstairs at 9 ½ at which hour F52° - wrote all but the 1st 4 ½ lines of today till 10 ½ having in the meantime hunted out Joseph Booth’s black coat and waistcoat and Robert Chambers’ new black dress coat and greatcoat all which luckily fit John Burton as well as if they had been made for him – A- to ride at 8am tomorrow to Cliff hill and we are afterwards to be off in the carriage to make calls – several light showers during the day but fin between the showers and finish day on the whole – Read a little of the newspaper before coming upstairs – Letter from Messrs. Laffitte dated 23 January 1837 (forwarded from Messrs. Hammersleys) containing my account from 20 December 1833 to Xmas 1836 and shewing in January this year at the date of the letter a balance in my favour of 277 francs – my rent to Mr. Cusinberche was paid by Laffitte 23 July 1835 = 346fr.05cts. so that all is safe – and surely I shall hear from M. Cusinberche by and by in answer to my letter of the 11th instant
