Stranger Things characters as Arctic Monkeys songs
Will: Love is a Laserquest - my favourite song for my favourite character, it has the perfect amount of angst and melancholia, sweet and sad.
"When I'm not being honest I pretend that you were just so lover."
Eleven: Crying Lightning - an occult, obscure song that definitely makes you feel like you have superpowers. It's badass and powerful, just like her
"But not twice as impossible as everyone assumes, you are crying lightning"
Max: Teddy Picker - an energetic song that carries criticism of the system, with a rock instrumental and just old enough for it not to be mainstream.
"They've sped up to the point where they provoke you to tell the fucking punchline before you have told the joke"
Lucas: A Certain Romance - a song about friends and romance, sweet and sour, with a godly instrumental break and a certain melancholia to it despite the upbeat rhythm.
"And if you could only see 'em then you would agree, agree that there in't no romance around there"
Mike: Mardy Bum - a song that starts as a cute little story about an argument to end up in a real one - weirdly resembling the one with Eleven in season 4.
"I've seen your frown and it's like lookin' down the barrel of a gun, and it goes off"
Dustin: Science Fiction - a song about sci-fi (duuuh), technologies, and love. Isn't it SO Dustin coded? With a self-awareness of maybe having too much meaning for people to understand, just like Dustin is always stripped of his complexity.
"I want to stay with you, my love, the way some science fiction does"
Hopper: Anyways - It's not really about the lyrics and more about the vibe. It feels retro, old-fashioned, quite comforting, and those are things I link to Hopper.
"Oversharing and its bitter aftertaste, exactly the wrong time in exactly the wrong place"
Joyce: Matador - A song about a girl marrying an asshole, sitting and saying nothing, until the day she will. I think it sorts of illustrates her relationship with Lonnie.
"Sulking won't get you nowhere, son. There's blood on your chin where you've bitten your tongue"
Robin: That's where you're wrong - A love song with an amazing vibe, it gives me major Robin energy though I don't have any clear explanation to explain why, it just does.
"She looks as if she's blowing a kiss at me and suddenly the sky is a scissor sitting on the floor with a tambourine"
Nancy: Perhaps vampires is a bit strong but - A song about people underestimating you, just as she is not taken seriously. But like AM became one of the most successful bands, Nancy ends up being stronger than anyone else.
"And though you pretend to stand by us, I know you're certain we'll fail"
Steve: Do Me A Favour - A song about being in the wrong in a relationship and knowing it, wanting things to end, which echoes what Steve said to Nancy during season 4. He was douchebag, he needed someone to tell him.
"And do me a favour and break my nose, or do me a favour and tell me to go away."
Jonathan: Black Treacle - Another energetic love song that puts you in a good mood, but that talks about drugs. It's a bit vague, a bit hard to understand its depth, and definitely fits my favourite older brother.
"Now it's getting dark and the sky looks sticky, more like black treacle than tar"
Billy: I want it all - a song about having a lot of girls, typical rock, also my least favourite song on the album and in this house we don't like Billy.
"Said, ain't it just like you to kiss me and then hit the road?"

Sticks and stones might break my bones but words like “Still got pictures of friends on the wall, I suppose we aren’t really friends anymore” and “Nosebleeds from epiphanies I took full in the face/ Oversharing and its bitter aftertaste” and “You’re just sounding it out, but you’re not coming back again” will destroy me and wreck every bit of self composure I’ve got left.

Why do you think that about anyways?
This is just speculation and my urge to analyze lyrics as if I'm in a college course called "Imagery and Meaning in the Works of Alex Turner"* but I have a theory that part of the ending of Alex and Taylor’s relationship was about Alex running away from the intimacy of having a partner like that - someone who shared his home, wanted to have kids with him, saw him at his grimiest man-bun mad-genius stage and still loved him, because he feels like he is fundamentally undeserving of that kind of love and intimacy. The lines that evoke this for me, “oversharing and its bitter aftertaste,” “sharing secrets I was taking to the grave”, indicate his discomfort when someone gets close or when he shows them more of his real self than he wanted to, and taken in the context of other songs like “The Bourne Identity” where he reveals his own discomfort with his “real self” makes me think that he’s talking about his urge to run away when someone gets a glimpse at this real self that he dislikes so much. Then a lot of the rest of the song evokes for me this image of a detached person, “behind my movie camera”, trying to recapture the vision that he wants to project and also running away (“rear view mirror”, “driving to the airport”) from the vulnerable self that he revealed earlier.
*register early, class fills up fast, allegedly due to the charisma of the lecturer, Professor Kane

‘Anyways’ by The Martini Police
written by Alexander Turner
from the Arctic Monkeys ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino’ 7″
Just another microcosm somewhere in the ether,
Putting the world to rights with Bing Crosby eyes
Oversharing and its bitter aftertaste
Exactly the wrong time,
in exactly the wrong place
Save it for a rainy day
Baby, you go hard in the paint
It’s just another race to Anyways
Philanthropic toga party
What a place for both the opposite sides
of my double life to finally collide
Sharing secrets I was taking to the grave
Nosebleeds from epiphanies I took full in the face
Oh, come o’er by the fire babe, let’s all participate
in yet another race to Anyways
Oh, how’s your mum and dad been doing with the generation game?
Yeah!
I’m behind my movie camera
I’ve got my megaphone
You can call me Alexander
It’s nice to meet you all
Listening to the shipping forecast driving to the airport
Me and the guys
Metropolis ablaze in the rearview
Devising methods to both have and eat your cake
Mm, just like the ones that Mother Nature used to bake
You look as if you know exactly what I’m gonna say
Is just another race to
Anyways
