Perhaps unsurprisingly, the world's smallest vertebrate wasn't discovered until 2013-- a minuscule frog by the name of Paedophryne amauensis. This species is only 7 mm (0.3 in) long, and weighs less than 10 milligrams (0.00035 oz). Despite their diminutive size, P. amauensis is capable of leaping 30 times its body length!

Cool Facts- Paedophryne amauensis, still lacking a common name, is the smallest vertebrate of modern history. Only discovered in 2012, these tiny frogs made a splash in the biological world. Their chirping calls mimic crickets and other insects as a form of vocal camouflage. Despite being a frog, you won’t catch a Paedophryne amauensis in a pond. Instead, they get all their moisture from dead leaves and fog. On a happy note, the majority of Paedophryne amauensis populations are protected. Located mostly in Papua New Guinea’s National Parks, these massive swaths of rainforest help protect these frogs along with countless others.

Region: Papua New Guinea

Size: Only about 0.3" (~7.7mm) long!

Interesting Notes: Discovered in 2009, by herpetologist Christopher Austin and one of his students, Eric Rittmeyer, this tiny frog is not only the smallest currently-known frog, but the smallest currently-known vertebrate as well. (…and it's so cute!😊💕)

The World’s Smallest Vertebrate Is a Tiny Brazilian Frog, Study Finds

Adult male Brazilian flea toads are just over 7 millimeters long on average, and females measure about 8.15 millimeters

A tiny frog endemic to the state of Bahia on Brazil’s Atlantic coast may have just earned the title of the smallest vertebrate in the world.

The Brazilian flea toad, or Brachycephalus pulex, was first discovered in 2011—and despite its name, it is technically a frog, not a toad. Researchers immediately suspected the creature could break the record for the tiniest frog—and vertebrate—on Earth, but it wasn’t until a new study that scientists systematically measured the lengths of the species’ males and females.

The male frogs, which are smaller, measured 7.10 millimeters long on average, the team reported this month in the journal Zoologica Scripta. An earlier study of the frog Paedophryne amauensis, the previous record holder, found that its males averaged 7.70 millimeters in length.

“It’s absolutely clear,” Mark Scherz, an evolutionary biologist at the Natural History Museum of Denmark who did not contribute to the findings, tells New Scientist’s Jake Buehler. “These really are potentially the smallest extant frogs in the world, which is astonishing.”

Froggy for your soul

Its name is Paedophryne amauensis (no common name sorry 😔) and it is the worlds smallest know vertabrate and weighs 10 milligrams at most. They found it by scooping up at pile of leaves that was making noise and putting it in a bag until they saw the froggy hopping around : )

Sure! Here is the super tiny Paedophryne amauensis, aka World's smallest frog, who measures an average of 7 millimeters from mouth to ass. These things are so tiny and so loud that researchers only discovered them because one was yelling in a patch of leaves. It's so tiny that it can't even eat flies so it feeds on mites. It also has no tadpole stage, instead opting tp just come out as a frog straight away because why not. They call for mates with a frequency of over 9,000Hz, weigh around 10 milligrams on average, and can jump over 30x their own body length.

Every single picture I can find of these is either super zoomed in or on a hand probably because there's just nothing reasonable to compare them to. Could you imagine being this thing? So tiny... So flawless.. no worries about anything.... Sitting in wet leafs and just jumping around like nobody's business.. absolute tranquility and perfection has been achieved here.
