Prairie got a fancy dress in the Audio dramas, I feel like the others deserve one too.

I was actually inspired by this post with the Phantom Thieves in masquerade outfits, they're really good designs and I wanted to do something similar with the ZX characters.
It's been a fun idea tbh, plus a good exercise in outfit design and posing with Ashe in particular. That's an area I think I really need to work on so with Ashe I wanted to try and draw a less stiff pose. I based it on Eunie's pose from her concept art. I feel like a confident pose like that really suits Ashe.

If Severus had been a girl, her story would have been mostly the same as canon, except that the Marauders maybe wouldn't have been so harsh with their bullying because "she wasn't a threat to James' crush on Lily" and "she's just a girl, girls are fragile". However, she would have still been in love with her and James knew that, so he still despised her, thinking she was holding Lily back from him.
Now unto my personal headcanons (because they fit and they make me happy):
- Fem! Severus wouldn't have shared a room with Mulciber and Avery, so she would have befriended her female roommates instead. I believe the fanaticism for the Death Eaters cult was more prominent in boys than girls, because society expected them to stay at home and raise more purebloods than participate in battles. However, she would've still hung out with them because they shared the same interest for Dark Arts.
-Her roommates would be Dorcas Meadow, Pandora Rosier (Evan Rosier's cousin) and Theresa Flint (the last one is an oc of mine)
- She would be a tomboy for the first few years, having her hair cut short and wear the male uniform instead of the female one. Partly because she's used to wearing boy clothes and partly to avoid embarrassing pranks from the Marauders. Due to this, she's often mistaken for a boy and fits in better with her male classmates.
- She knows wizards are more respected that witches, so she strives to imitate a masculine appearance to earn that (at first). It's not a case of "I'm not like other girls". She wants to survive.
- She's been infatuated with Lily since they met, but this crush wears off as Snape sees Lily's selfishness and hypocrisy. By the time their friendship is over, Snape is already disillusioned with her but still tries to hold into their old bond out of emotional attachment rather than love.
- She faced her own prejudice and hardships in Slytherin for being a poor half-blood, with a disgraced pureblood mother. She only earned her place when she showed off her talent and bested a few of her housemates. Basically, she had to win fights, physical and magical, against her own housemates until they deemed she deserved to be in Slytherin.
-In canon, Lucius took Snape under his wing and treated him like a brother in Hogwarts. In this, it's Narcissa who sees the potential in Snape and practically adopts her, and Lucius follows her example. Thanks to the older girl, Snape experiences nice clothes and good school tools for the first time. Narcissa is quite her sugar mommyl, but Snape is also her pet project.
- She's a bit of "one of the boys", although they're not really friends until fourth year. The boys were Mulciber, Avery, Wilkes and Rosier. They accepted her because they didn't really consider her a girl and they begrudgingly respected her skills. It was a mutual understanding that they used each other for their own benefits, Snape helping them with her intellect and spells while they helped her into getting assimilated with the other Slytherins. As they grew and got to know Snape beyond her blood status, they became protective of her and started to cherish her truly as a friend (althought Rosier took it to another level)
-Which brings us to my next headcanon. In my au, Rosier and Snape had a nice connection on first year when they sat together during History of Magic. He's one of the few that was welcoming of Snape since the start and always treated her like an equal. She's very fond of him because of it, and they grow to be very close friends.
-Regulus still looked up to her when they were students. He didn't trust her at first, because of her blood status and all, but seeing she had Narcissa's favour, he decided to look past it. And after witnessing her talent, he decided he wanted to learn more about her, so he began to follow her around to know her better. Snape was annoyed initially, but she eventually appreciated his company.
-She showed some genuine kindness to Barty Crouch Jr on his first year at Hogwarts, and the boy latched unto her like an eager puppy since then. That's how he befriended Regulus, with both of them following her around so often.
-They were both her little brothers, her precious babies, who couldn't do nothing wrong even if they tried. She was patient and permissive with them in a way she definitely wasn't with her other friends.
-She's the brain of the group, so she's usually saving their asses from the consequences of their actions (Mulciber, Avery and Wilkers) and helping them with their schemes (Dorcas, Rosier and Narcissa).
-In her desire to remain in Lily's life and have the girl's love, Snape repressed herself and kept her Slytherin friends at arms' length, which caused many arguments. When she and Lily had that fallout, Snape fully embraced her identity and, in return, her housemates embraced her too, as if they had been waiting for her.
-She was a natural Occlumens, unconsciously developing her ability while she learnt to mask her feelings and thoughts, product of the abuse and harassment she went throught.
-Her boggart used to be her father, Tobias Snape, but after "the prank", it became a werewolf instead.
-After what happened in the Shrieking Sack, she inmersed herself in researchs about lycanthropy and possible cures in order to forget her fear.
-When she experimented with potions, she tried them first on small animals, mostly rats and birds. Then bigger animals, like owls and cats. And lately, in the final phase of testing, she tried them on herself. Only her friends knew about this practise, since Snape made them promise to not tell a soul, since she didn't trust the Hogwarts staff to be understanding about it.
-When something goes wrong on the final test, she heals in the privacy of her bed while her friends take care of her, lying to the teachers that she's sick. They dread this practise of hers, since they can't stand seeing her in pain, but also had mad respect for her because of it.
-She was a control freak, obsessively cleaning and arranging her stuff with systems only she understands. She always knew when someone touched her things, just by seeing them moved the slighest bit to the different position she left them. Her housemates knew better than disrupt her order.
-Her talent with potions surpassed even Slughorn himself, but he preferred to praise Lily because her looks and attitude fit more in his club. He came to regret that decision years later, but Snape knows how to keep grudges.
-She considered Mulciber, Avery, Dorcas, Pandora, Rosier, Regulus and Barty her closest friends within Slytherin. The rest were just acquaintances. She was also close to Aurora Sinistra, from Ravenclaw, and Charity Burbage, from Hufflepuff.
-She and Charity danced around the lines separating friendship from romance for a while, but Snape wasn't ready for that step and Charity moved on. They remained good friends.
-She was a raging bisexual, because obviously.
-She didn't support the Death Eaters' beliefs, but she really looked up to the figure of Lord Voldemort. A poor half-blood like her, who paved his way to the top of the hierarchy with his charms, wit and power, making all the pureblood families submit to him. He was everything she aspired to be, everything she wanted to have. However, she soon realized her vision didn't exactly match reality...
And that's all. I have more but I wrote too much already. I'm on a hyperfixation, so I'll definitely write more about her in the future.
Feel free to tell me your own ideas or headcanons. I'll love to discuss them.
Tagging @love-the-purple-cat because she's also a fem! Snape stan. She has an amazing au, so go and check her!

i hope the new year has been kind to you !! please don’t feel pressure to write. take time to rest well. i go back and reread old pieces of yours all the time! i admire your writing a lot and wanted to ask if you had any more advice about writing .. am excited for whatever you post, whenever it is you post it ^__^ your sandman fic is so evocative and interesting.. the prose is so .. thick in a glutinous dough kind of way.. i don’t know where it’ll go.. thank you again!
thank you and happy new year! so far so good lol i’m with family and very happy. i appreciate your patience and understanding. while i am working on stuff again, i’m also sort of stranded away from home until the later part of this month lol so my schedule is a bit strange.
as for writing advice, here are some exercises to try!
.
.
.
->rewrite a classic: china mieville wrote four final orpheuses, a short story which explores four different reasons why orpheus failed in his quest to bring eurydice back from the underworld. these range from a moment of weakness to simple human error and tell radically different stories about their relationship and his state of mind in just a few brief snippets.
find a story like a classic myth or fairy tale and rewrite it in ways that resonate with you. change the ending, reinterpret the characters, or focus on a different perspective. if you’re not sure what to do, try coming up with questions you want answered or alternate possibilities: how did marya morevna first defeat and capture koschei the deathless? what does the sea witch get up to when mermaids aren’t pestering her to see the surface world? hope is the last thing in the box pandora opens; what does it look like, and what does she do with it?
->imitate another writer’s style: i made a post one time about voice and said you shouldn’t feel pressure to change it, but i also think going out of your way to emulate another writer for an exercise can be fun and useful. for the sandman fic, i tried to imitate the “feel” and structure of gaiman’s writing. when i first read the comic, i was really amazed by how many plot threads he would juggle each arc, and how those threads would weave together in the finale, so i wanted to use that along with the more dreamy, surreal prose and absurd humor.
find a writer or specific work that you enjoy and wouldn't mind imitating stylistically. study their voice (the aforementioned post has specific examples of what to look for) as well as how the work is structured. you could write fanfiction or something original with this exercise, but i think it’s easiest to stay in the same genre and use similar themes or aesthetics as the work you’re using for reference.
->if you get stuck, time travel: recently i read a book on revisions (unfortunately can’t remember the title/author, i skimmed it at the star but didn't buy it) that gave advice along the lines of “if you suddenly get stuck and can’t figure out why, the problem is several sentences ago.” the thinking here is that we sometimes write ourselves into a corner without realizing it, and you need to back out of the corner by retracing your steps. you might’ve gotten bored or lost focus and that made the last few sentences really rough or go in a direction that’s hard to work with. go back a paragraph or two and reexamine what you have, cutting it entirely if need be.
alternatively, i’ve found that if i get stuck at the very start of a piece, then the problem is where i’m choosing to start. i’ve been working on something about certain characters involved in certain illicit businesses and wanted to open with a party at a fancy venue. i was hellbent on opening with some scene-setting narration/exposition on the venue itself as the reader travels there, and i wasn't getting past the first sentence. so eventually i shifted forward. instead, the reader would have just arrived at the venue and the opening would introduce one of the characters at the party. this also just didn't work, so i moved forward even further. everyone's at the venue, the party has been going on for a while, and it starts with the reader considering the reasons they should not be at this party. what ended up working was cutting my initial, slow-paced plan and starting closer to the action, and i think that's a good idea in most situations.

Okay, so Charmed had like four different potential spin-off plans/ideas and none of them really worked out obviously, but I was kind of just going through all of the episodes for ideas of what some of the supporting casts could have looked like (I’m gonna post it eventually, but I gotta organize it first) and just, hear me out:
Either Billie Jenkins or Hope from Little Box of Horrors is our main character. Both of them have very different personalities and appeals as main characters, so it kind of spins out differently depending on which is the main-main character.
Either way, they’re both in the main cast. With Hope being there, Darcy is also involved and remarkably level-headed about it. She’s still a mortal, but is often the one hearing about the gossip going around. As a result, she’s often the one who knows about innocents in trouble and when something suspiciously magical is going on.
Speed from Battle of the Hexes, who doesn’t know about magic initially, continually gets involved trying to help the innocent of the week and ends up in the trouble bit. He is so sarcastic, but he’s also ride or die for his friends. Once he discovers magic, he ends up encouraging the group to experiment with their powers, which causes a few chaotic episodes but he’s still a good friend.
Max Franklin from Secret and Guys is probably the most skilled at using his powers, but is also the most leery about getting involved in demonic or dangerous situations due to his father getting shot last time. He’s the voice of reason a lot of the time, but also is drawn to helping people anyways.
Aviva from the Fourth Sister is the tired goth grad student that ends up reluctantly mentoring them so that they don’t end up dead. She doesn’t have any active powers, but she’s still a practitioner. (Except where she ends up getting premonitions, whoops.)
They get a Whitelighter too! Eventually, at least. It’s either J.D. Williams or Mikelle, who was originally an innocent. Either way, someone ends up in a forbidden love relationship with the Whitelighter.
There are also some familiar reoccurring characters.
Kyle Gwydion is one of their TA’s. No, none of them knew about each other originally either. He doesn’t have really any kind of magical knowledge, but turns out that being the Chosen One applies to more than just Tuatha’s wand and helps out occasionally. He either is or did date Jenny Gordon, but idk if she’d be a reoccurring character or not since she didn’t really have a personality.
Y’know how I said, Speed finds out about magic eventually? Yeah, it’s not really a “we should probably tell you” thing. It’s more of a freak out way. And y’know what, Speed isn’t Catholic but his momma is so off he goes to a confessional because his friends?? Use magic?? Which isn’t that evil? Well, says a former warlock-current priest, magic helped save him from becoming evil, so now Brendan Rowe gets to help out with his unfortunately very in-depth and thorough knowledge of evil, demons, and the Underworld.
Needless to say, the Elders aren’t actually just letting a newbie Whitelighter be the only one looking after: half of the Ultimate Power, the Guardian of Pandora’s Box, a weirdly accepting mortal, a future whitelighter, a witch, a practitioner that did get involved with demons, and the Chosen One. And y’know what, there’s an Elder-who-used-to-be-a-witch that’s around their age, so Kevin from Witches in Tights doesn’t get involved but keeps an eye on them and on super rare occasions, will sketch out something to help them when they’re in a pinch. Jonnah (from season eight) isn’t very impressed, but is also watching them with Kevin and has to admit that they’re not dead yet, so someone’s doing something right.
Wow, Abi, you may ask. Can you shamelessly add any other oneshot characters from Charmed into this?
I’m so happy you asked, because Billie eventually finds Christy and the squad is all crowded in Aviva’s living room and Christy freaks out and now Aviva’s trash can is on fire.
Aviva sighs and calls Tyler Michaels.

Oh Dear, you’ve opened Pandora box of my curiosity! I would love to read about your other OCs! Does all your OC’s have something in common with you? I know you mentioned that the only trait you share with Amara are green eyes. But there are many traits you share with Olivia! What about others? But please, enjoy your vacation first!
Btw. Olivia is one of very few female names I like
🔪
Ha! Actually you opened the Pandora Box!
Honestly I have an OC for every fandom?men/women I like. Some of them doesn't even have name but I can imagine traits of them all. Also some OCs add a pinch of supernatural fantasy into the stories.
For AC 1 I have Amara and Shifa.
Shifa was an idea for a witch that was able to give Malik his hand back. Tbh I wrote some about it and then dropped it ;; (opsie)
For Ezio I have Flora. The only supernatural part of her is that she can see ghosts. Basically she sees ghosts of Federico and Giovanni and then tried to tell Ezio about it because she needs his help to help them cross the border. Actually I mostly use Flora in Sims but that story is complicated and lasts for all Ezio trilogy.
For Connor I thought about Slavic girl (idk I just like Slavic looks and folk outfits/stories etc. She run away from Europe after her country was destroyed and became a doctor/herbalist in America. She helps people both British and Native if she can. She doesn't want to hurt anyone. She used to be an assassin but she didn't want to kill and take part in wars.
Olivia - I already said a bit about her. She is a seamstress, Thomas Hickey's younger sister, bunny lover.
For Edward... Well I don't have oc for him to be with but I have an OC they actually starts her story in black flag! Ceri (Ceridwen) is a mermaid that became friends with Edward. She was for him when he lost everyone but when he settled in London she had to leave. She went back to th sea but she visited sometimes to check on them and meet baby Haytham. She promised Edward she would protect Haytham. But then she disappeared again and when she came back Edward was dead and Haytham was gone. She found him eventually during ac rogue, decided to stick by his side but eventually fell for Shay. Isn't it too weird? But I really like mermaids and sirens so I just had to make at least one!
I have 2 oc for Haytham. Olivia is my main one but when I'm down I like to make something about the other one. Lori (Loralei) is a siren who is with Haytham. I created her for my friend who has also sea creature for Shay! Sometimes we have fun with developing their relationship.
Shay - as I said, for him I only have this mermaid lady.
Arno - Vivienne. It's a soulmate au which I already wrote and it's somewhere on Tumblr and my ao3. I think I may write more about them sooner or later. Back then I had big mood for soulmate au's because I find them interesting!
For Arno I also have male OC Gilbert (alternative for french Frye I guess ). Gilbert is a writer and a friend of De Sade. He meets Arno by accident and then... He writes a book about him, but actually changed his name and such. But when Arno sees this book, he knows it's about him. He and Gilbert have funny relationship. Gilbert is at the same time very mature and very childish! He helps Arno to move on in life.
Jacob - let's start with Megan, another Slavic oc who tries to help people who run away from central/East Europe to London. She is an assassin and was sent to London to free it. She is supposed to make fully functional assassin's bureau in London and liberate the city. Council doesn't know Evie and Jacob are there so she kind of .. blackmails them to do what she wants or she will tell on them and they will be kick of the brotherhood. But eventually they work things out.
I have informant Ian who is also for Jacob. He is kind of a psycho and morally grey but welp.
I know it's so many and I'm like creating more whenever something inspires me. It's a total mess but it makes me happy 🥰
I almost forgot! Octavia the doctor for Otso Berg, finding out that his daughter isn't sick but poisoned by abstergo.
I have no oc for Bayek (except one lil oc who is a child Bayek and Aya kind of adopts) because I have so much respect and Aya and I'm in such an awe for Bayeks love I feel like I would be disrespectful if I made OC to be with him.

THE BASICS:
Full Name: Luna Lovegood
Label: The Dissonant Serenity ( x )
Nicknames: Looney, Luns
Birthday: February 13
Birth Place: Near Ottery St. Catchpole
Gender: Transwoman
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Occupation: Student
INTERIOR:
Blood status:  Halfblood ( Pureblood father, halfblood mother )
House: Ravenclaw While Luna does show qualities that belong to other houses ( she’s definitely courageous and noble, has a deeply proud streak that often brings her more bad than good, and is a loyal and kind person ), she fits best in Ravenclaw. It’s where she can flourish, where she can feed her endless intrigue with everything around her. I think Luna is a true Ravenclaw, as she uses her sharp mind in most situations she’s in --- I chose innovative as her defining positive trait for a reason; I think Luna is able to look at situations with an unique perspective and because of this, she often brings good solutions and/or insights. She’s an original, incredibly stubborn when it comes to her convictions, and always down to learn.
Wand: Pine wood, unicorn hair core, 14 inches, inflexible. Pottermore on pine wood: “The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. Pine wands enjoy being used creatively, and unlike some others, will adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells.” /// This, I think, perfectly fits Luna --- she’s a strong individual, who is definitely an experimental and creative person, both when it comes to magic and other aspects of her life.  I chose an unicorn hair core, because wands with this core struggle to perform Dark Arts -- like Luna -- but are very faithful -- like Luna. Her wand is long, as she’s quite tall and has a strong sense of self, and is inflexible because she’s most often an incredibly stubborn person.
Boggart: Her mother’s death scene --- it’s what scarred Luna most, even if she doesn’t admit that to herself. It’s a memory that startles and shakes her, one that’s been buried down due to the trauma linked to it --- seeing it again, experiencing it again ( especially knowing what the outcome would be, what the long-term effects would be, how much the longing would ache ) would be one of the scariest things for Luna. It could also take the shape of that scene, but with her father in stead of her mother; losing her father is another great fear.
Patronus: The Hare
Pets: None, but then Luna doesn’t really believe in the idea of pets. Animals are their own, after all, and she feels connected to plenty of them. Cats from her housemates, the thestrals, mice running around the hallways; she loves all of them, but none of them are hers. At home, there are often stray animals hanging around --- she and her father tend to them, if they need help, and Luna does sometimes name them ( carefully, though, because what if these creatures have a name of their own already? ).
Moral Alignment: True Neutral. Luna looks at the world with a bit of a distance, at time, and is able to look at situations with objectivity, when she wants to. She’s not apathetic, though, or coldly distant; she just acts without prejudice or compulsion. And more than often, she does do what is morally good ( and she does lean towards being neutral good very much ), but I think that the way she views the world and how she approaches things is more true neutral than anything.
Tarot Card: The Hermit
Goals / Desires: Luna wants to do what fills her heart. Make art. Discover the world. Research magical creatures. Those are all things she would like to do with her future life, but then there’s more --- she wants to do what is right. With a sense of justice -- or, well, more a deep hatred for injustice -- she is motivated to take strides to make the world a little brighter and better.
PHYSICAL:
Height: 178cm / 5′10
Eye Color: Pale grey
Hair Color: Light blonde
Clothing style: Where can I begin? Luna’s style can only be defined by her own person --- I don’t think there’s anyone else who dresses similarly to her, haha. She makes plenty of her own clothes, likes accessories made of unconventional objects, adores a bit of magic in her clothing. She likes colours, especially pastels. When she wears shoes, she likes converse. Mismatched patterns are always good. Flowy dresses? Yes please!
Left handed or Right handed: Left handed
Distinguishing Features: Her hair and eyes.
Tattoos or scars: Usually has some minor scars from animal or branch scratches, that fade easily.
FAMILY:
Parents:  Xenophilius Lovegood ( father ), Pandora Lovegood néé Henneberg ( mother, deceased ).
Siblings: None
Children: None
FAVORITE:
Book: Luna doesn’t like picking favourites, but she really loves her old picture books still, mostly for sentimental reasons & because she likes illustration. She mostly reads non-fiction these days, preferring her own fantasy over fiction.
Movie: N/A -- Luna has never seen a movie, sadly. I think she would love studio Ghibli, though, as well as documentaries ( both nature and more conspiracy theory based ).
Food: Strawberry bavarois
Flower: Lily of the Valley
Season: Spring
Animal: This one is so hard, haha. Luna loves animals! I think she feels especially close to thestrals, but she’s also simple in the sense that she really likes cats and bunnies.
Memory: The summer she and her parents went to Iceland.
THIS OR THAT:
Cats or Dogs: Cats
Mornings or Nights: Mornings
War or Love: Love
Smoke or Drink: Smoke, if it’s weed. Otherwise drink.
Coffee or tea? Tea
Writing or reading? Writing
THOUGHTS:
Death Eaters coming back Luna is rationally scared and quite frustrated. She also has her fair share of theories on Voldemort’s return ( none that conflict with Harry’s story, though, just ones that fill the gaps ), some more logical than the other. She and her father have had many discussions about these --- like the role Fudge played in it all ( bigger than in reality, of course ) and whether the Death Eaters are using midges to communicate.
Enemies coming back Luna doesn’t necessarily have enemies that are personal. I suppose she’s not looking forward to seeing her bullies again at Hogwarts, but she doesn’t consider them enemies. As for enemies that aren’t personal, those are mostly the Death Eaters ( as well as the Ministry and a few Quidditch teams ), and for that see above!
Loved ones coming back Luna thinks she will see her mother again already, but if it were to happen now, she would be incredibly surprised and more than happy --- she’d be euphoric. And confused, and very lost, but mostly just incredibly happy.
Love At First Sight Luna thinks that love exists in an infinite amount of ways, so love at first sight as well.
One True Love / Someone You Will Always Love She will always love her father --- it’s an unconditional love, and if we look at his canon future and how he ends up selling out her friends, that is something she will forgive him for.
QUESTIONS:
What is their family history like? How does it affect them? How do they feel about their family? How does their family feel about them? Pandora was born to a muggle and a witch, and raised by her father alone. And, being able to see the magical world through her father’s muggle eyes, she grew interested in the limits of magic from a young age. She began experimenting with charms early on, and met Xenophilius at Hogwarts, where they bonded over their love for the unknown and their willingness. Xenophilius comes from the Lovegood family, of course, which has always been a tad eccentric, though never as eccentric as he himself.  Luna was born to this set of openminded parents, and it was exactly what she needed to flourish. Her own mind has always been open, but she was able to dream outside the lines with her parents. Growing up was a world of opportunity --- no questions unanswered, no desires unfulfilled. Luna got to paint and run and discover from a young age, and was a perfect mix of her two parents, with some of her own qualities mixed in.  Luna is extremely proud of her family. She sometimes pities others, for having parents that restrict them, keep them from all that she did get to do. When people speak ill of her father -- who is a somewhat public figure, and often painted as a crazy conspiracy theorist -- she gets uncharacteristically fiery and angry, and will lash out. Her mother, she is proud of as well, but it’s more complicated than that --- and luckily, people don’t bring her up as often as her father. Of course, a big part of her family history is her mother’s death --- it was a turning point in the way Luna’s homelife functioned. In the years after Pandora died, her father grew codependent on her ( which is not how it should be --- and Luna vaguely knows this, but doesn’t feel any anger over it ), but on the other hand the two grew incredibly close as well. But Luna worries about her father when she’s not near, as he’s of the opinion that tasks like eating, washing and sleeping are meaningless in the grand scheme of things, a waste of time when there’s so many more pressing and interesting things to do --- and it’s Luna who often was the one to remind him that, dad, you’re a human being despite it all.  And then her mother, her mother is just a massive gap. And yes, Luna believes that she will see her again, that she isn’t truly lost ------ but that doesn’t ease the waiting, the longing, the aching. Her mother’s death left her with mental scars and a hole in her soul and while there’s plenty of beautiful and comforting things she can say about death, it doesn’t change that. Her mother still died, and she’s not there --- and she will be there one day again, yes, but sometimes Luna just wants her mother now.
Who were their first love and do they feel the same now as they did then? Luna hasn’t really been in love yet, I think. She has had crushes, but she’s never been in love with someone, has never had a connection that deep --- it’s just flings and crushes, connections that lasted just a night, a week, a month at most. She doesn’t mind.
Do they believe that a person can redeem themselves from mistakes of the past? Yes, in most situations --- I think even Luna, an eternal optimist, draws a line here with people like Voldemort and the Lestranges, for example. She does believe in people’s strength to do good and does believe that there’s almost always a way to make up for ones mistakes --- but of course, there are things that are inexcusable. Luna is able to be very unforgiving, though, so sometimes it does take a lot for someone to redeem themselves in her head.
What scares them? Losing her father. The war. Complete silence.
How do they feel about death? Have they been significantly affected by it? On one hand, death is just another mystery --- and Luna does love mystery and life’s bigger ones. It’s a mystery she can’t solve, though, and sometimes she’s at peace with the fact that she can’t have all the answers. Other times, she’s just incredibly frustrated and angry, because death took her mother away from her and there’s nothing mysterious about that --- she’s just gone. One day she will see her again, that she is sure of, but right now she’s a young woman who grew up without a mother and that’s just painful. That just hurts. And that’s definitive.  Luna has seen death, and that has affected her deeply. Seeing her mother die at age nine was a traumatic experience that still haunts her -- despite her denial about this -- and it’s triggered her to dissociate from the world around her and herself quite a lot. On another hand, it has given her a bit of wisdom and insight, an ability to understand death perhaps a bit better than others do -- or at least give it her own interpretation.
Pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth. If your character was a seven deadly sin, what would they be and why? Pride, with anger on the second place. Luna is incredibly proud and can be, because of this, very inflexible. Yes, she is openminded, but when it comes to her beliefs and convictions, she won’t change her mind unless there’s solid proof. When people question her, she doesn’t reflect on her beliefs, but rather thinks that they’re narrow minded and limited. When it comes to her father, she’s quite prideful as well --- she holds him and his work in high regard and if someone dares insult this, she will becoming steely and hard
Do they believe Voldemort is back ? Yes. Why shouldn’t she? When Harry came out of that maze and spoke those words, it was clear that he spoke nothing short of the truth, and you will never find Luna believing the Daily Prophet over someone like Harry Potter. It’s not a truth she likes, but it’s clear to her that it is the truth, and she won’t shy away from that.
PICK THREE:
Lyrics that describes your character best        -- Runaway by AURORA  ( the whole song, tbh ) ------  I was painting a picture / the picture was a painting of you and / for a moment I thought you were there / but again, it wasn't true / and all this time I have been lying / oh, lying in secret to myself / i've been putting sorrow on the forest plains        -- Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac ------ she is like a cat in the dark and then / she is the darkness / she rules her life like a fine skylark and when / the sky is starless         -- The Wind by PJ Harvey ( I chose this song for her app more for atmosphere reasons than lyrics, but I wanted to add it still ) -----  Catherine liked high places / high up, high up on the hills / a place for making noises / like whales / noises like the whales / here she built a chapel / with her image / an image on the wall a place where she could rest and / and a place where she could wash / and listen to the wind blowing
Quotes that your character lives by        --  “The knowledge of all things is possible” --- Leonardo da Vinci        --  “There is no end. There is no beginning. There is only the passion of life.” --- Federico Fellini        -- “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.” --- Marcus Aurelius
Fictional characters that your character can relate to Allison Dufresnes from The Little Friend by Donna Tartt. --- All of the quotes on my blog are quotes about her --- she just really reminds me of Luna in a lot of ways. Both of them saw a family member die at a young age and both of them were damaged by it. Both of them deal with dissociation because of their trauma, have trouble with communicating with people at times and are described as a dreamy, soft, vague. They also both have a soft spot for animals.  Orla McCool from Derry Girls. --- Orla just ... screams Luna. Both have convictions that others think of as wacky, naive or just downright nonsensical, both make incredibly out-of-the-blue comments that do, somehow, make sense. They’re both a bit ignorant of social cues and don’t have much of a filter.  But they aren’t just similar in that sense, they’re also both very loyal friends. ALSO when Orla danced with her grandpa? That’s Luna and Xeno. Spot on. “Protestants hate ABBA.” -- Orla. “Purebloods hate ABBA.” -- Luna. I’m just SAYING.  Phoebe Buffay from FRIENDS. --- I feel less passionately about this one than the two above, but I just think that Phoebes role in the group of friends really mirrors that of Luna in the dynamic of her ( future ) group of friends. Phoebe’s optimism, creativity and straightforwardness are also things she has in common with Luna, and honestly? I could see Luna writing a song like smelly cat.
People who have changed your character’s life immensely I think her parents have had a massive impact on Luna --- they allowed her to flourish, to grow, to develop her passions and beliefs and convictions. Because of the freedom she was given as a child, she’s been able to grow into who she is now. Her mother’s death, of course, has impacted her life greatly as well.  Ginny is also on this list, I think, as one of her first friends. :’)

Ehixh self-introduction
Ehich was my Internet handle before DLTQ. EH ICH. Or Which.
The German ICH ('me') is spoken with a guttural sound, while the English word 'Witch' or 'Which' is with a dental sound.
I started using Ehich in 1998. I used it when I that spring was chatting in strange arenas. I used Ehich as my first blog name, on LiveJournal in early 2000. I used Ehich when I hit on girls online. That sounded wrong but I don't care. I hooked up with a girl called _________ using the Ehich name in 1998. She was from Hong Kong. We dated for 5 years. In the end, we both moved on. I had www.ehich.net back then. But I later gave up on that domain. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Ehich was a meditation. Of my wish to both look at the externals (dental) and the internals (guttural) of life. Of my goal to both be in the world, and forsake the world. Look outwards, and inwards.
I also moved on. New phases. So in 2003 I decided it was time to go for a 4 letter handle. From 5 to 4. From Ehich to an acronym. I spent a weekend, stuck in a room. Read Camus, and thought about the Internet. And I realized that I always preferred questions. Answers aren't important, but good questions are golden. If you ask the right questions, you can open up all kinds of Pandora's boxes. So I ended up centering my acronym around questions. OK. So what is there about them? Well, I was still quite young then. My father had just died, but I was only 25. I had gambled away 100K USD in a furious week, but I was still only 25. I had wanted to kill myself after thinking far too many times about my father's words to me when he was on his death-bed, and I had gone to visit him before he died, and he had become furious. Screamed and thrashed his arms around. "Why are You here? Who told you? WHO TOLD YOU?!"
His own sister had betrayed him. My aunt, my father's sister, had betrayed him and his law, his law that "Nobody is to tell my oldest son that I am dying." She called me up one morning, had finally found me. She betrayed his law, his last will, his wish to not see me again. The last time he saw me was 5 years earlier, in 1998, when I had tracked HIM up. It was bloody hard. It took 2 months. But I finally found him in _________. And I travelled there. And knocked on his door. He opened. He opened. And asked who I was. What I wanted.
"The last time you saw me, I was 2 years old. You left me!" I told him, with anger, hurt, sorrow. His eyes widened. Widened and widened. And widened. And widened. Then: "Raymond?"
Yes.
It is I. Ehich. Eh? ICH? Eheieh. I am what I am.
Yes. I am Raymond.
He shouted at me. Why did I come there? Was I hysterical, like my mother? No. I am only half of her. You were married with her for 3 years, remember? You married her. Then I was conceived. Then I was born. You still sailed the oceans. You sailor father fucker you. A mistress in every harbour. A cliché so thick.
He calmed down. Asked me to come inside.
He asked me if I wanted coffee. I said yes. We drank coffee. He was 41 then. I was 20. It was 1998. I had moved from Denmark to Norway in December 1997. To study. To find my father. Confront the basterd.
We talked. For 2 hours. I finally knew why I am so different from my mother, in most mood states. I got my mood genes from him. He told me why he had left me. Me and my mother. He found someone else. Not just any mistress, but someone to live his life with. To have children with.
Me: I have siblings?!
He: Yes. 2.
Me: How old are they?
He: Your sister, _______, is 16. Your brother, _______, us 12.
Me: - - - - - - - -
He: Yes. It is true.
Me: A sister?
He: Yes, ________. She lives with her mother in ________.
Me: You left them too?
He: Yes, we divorced 2 years ago.
Me, to myself, murmuring "A trail of children"
He, heard it, nodded. Serious. Direct.
At the end of our 2 hour talk, I left.
We exchanged phone numbers. Email addresses.
"We will keep in touch", he told me.
I smiled.
I had not forgiven him. But I was ready to establish contact. I had missed him all those years, days, minutes.
He changed his phone number after I left. He deleted his email account. Throw away phone, number, email, relationship.
I tried to track him up again. Reached his girlfriend, the one he lived with when I had tracked him down, when I visited him. She screamed at me. "He left me after you visited us! You bastard! It's all your fault!" she then hung up the phone.
I was 20. I was not ready for That. So. I gave up. I stopped the hunt. I did not want to destroy the lives of more girls. More of his trails.
But. I had gained a sister, and a brother, in the process.
I tracked them down. Visited them. And their mother. They all greeted me warmly. They never understood why he did not want to be a father to me. To be there. At least sometimes. Once a year.
He was there for them at least. Stayed with them until he had enough. That was more than 2 years of the children's lives, at least. More than his first attempt of being a father. The first. Without practice. Hating the chains. Was he Supposed to stop having the girls, one in each harbour? Brazil, Egypt, USA, Netherlands. Etc.
So. In 1998 after I lost my father again and gained 2 siblings, I found the Ehich. Handle. Name.
In 2003, 5 years after my visit to him in 1998, I one morning received a phone call from my aunt in _________, Northern Norway, near the border to Russia. She asked me if I am Raymond, son of _______. Yes, he is me. I am him.
Her: "I am your aunt" Me: "Oh, hello! Never heard of you, sorry"
Her: "Your father is dying. He is at the hospital in _____" Me: "What?! He is in My own frigging city? Dying? At the hospital?"
Her: "Yes. Listen: If you visit him before he dies of cancer, don't tell me it was me who told you, okay? He would never forgive me"
Me: "Okay. Thank you. I guess I will go to the hospital now."
I went there immediately. When I arrived, I asked for him by name. The nurse: "Who are you?" Me: "I am his son." The nurse: "His son? Really? I have never heard of you." Me: "I am the son he always avoided, since I was 2."
She told me that they were about to move him, from the regular room in the cancer department, to the part of the hospital that are for those who are dying. "Wait here", she told me.
I waited. Then I looked in the corridor. Sat on a chair. Then I noticed a bed being rolled by two other nurses towards me. I looked at the creature in the bed. Face in pain. Cancer-filled tongue hanging out of the mouth. Below the cheek. "Poor man", I thought.
Then.
Then I saw his eyes. Brown, like mine. Intense, like mine. But seething with anger, hatred. He stared at me. Glared. I looked back. Shocked.
The nurses rolled the bed past me. He did not say a word. But he was clearly Not happy to see me.
Fine. I was expecting that. I get it. I am not a retard.
I sat on the chair again, as if struck by lightning. All the years. And now he truly was dying, at age 46. Pappa. Dad.
A few moments passed. I then heard a wild scream. Looked to where it was coming from. Arms, thin arms, raising from the bed that was still being rolled towards the elevator. That scream has haunted me since.
I spoke with the nurse. She came back. "They are moving him now", she said. "I saw", I answered.
Her: "Ohh... OH!"
She connected the dots.
The bed. The scream. My white face, as if I had seen a ghost.
"Yes", I said.
She: "Let me talk with him. Wait here".
She followed the bed and the screams that were getting fainter.
She came back an hour later. She was sad. But also triumphant. Years of experience had helped her here. She said: "He finally agreed to meet you. Can you wait an hour and then visit him at room ______?" yes, sure.
I went there an hour later. Fuck. Fuck. Fucketi fuck. I dreaded it. I did not want more screams. I hate screams. My mother is a screamer. She screamed all through my childhood. The left-behind mother.
I met him. We talked. He barely could talk, but it was loud enough. I learned a lot about him. His life. He was calm. Resignated. Had given up.
Then he said: "I do not regret one second for not having contact with you all those years".
I nodded. I got it. That kind of honesty rang true. He was waiting for the shock effect. For me to react in tears, sobs, cries, screams, accusations. I gave him none of that. I am not my fucking mother, you bastard.
I nodded. I said: "I understand that. No regrets. I hate you for being away all that time. I hate you for being such a weak coward". He smiled. He understood. Was there a glimpse of pride in his eyes?
But when I asked him about my sami roots. The roots from his side. He flared. Angry. "There is no sami blood in our family!" OK ok, got it. Thinking to myself: "Weak coward. Liar."
I left him. Wished him a good death. His pain spiked, he glared at me. But then smiled. A small hint of a laugh.
I never visited him again. He died a few weeks later. At his funeral, I did not shed a tear. That would have made him proud. I drank a ton of vodka. Gin and tonic. And I gambled. Gambled it all away. Slot machine numbness. Gambled it all away, and more. Took debts. Lost that. Ruined myself. Had tons of unsafe sex. But my body withstood. My mind still had signs of life.
That is when I found DLTQ.
Don't Lose The Question.
A constant reminder.
What the question was back then, well, that question you can get over my dead body.
Ehich. DLTQ. I later had other domains. DLTQ.org. RMND.org. Etcetc.
I blogged. Vlogged. Vlogged my heart out. Got rid of my gambling addiction/escape. Cut down on the sex as well. And In 2005 in one of my diary books I drew a line. 2006. Moved back to Denmark. 2009. Moved back to Norway. 2010 married the then gf. Had a son. He is now 9. I am still married. To the same woman I married in 2010.
Ehixh is simply Ehich with an x. The X factor. www.ehixh.com once had secret subdomains. They are maybe still there, in the dark underbelly of the Internet.
Why I ride? I ride the Internet, and the Internet rides me. I ride the electrons and neurons. The flash of associations. To lives lived and memories collected.
My rodeo style is my own. You will see. I will not put my name after each post, signing it. We are not retards. If the system won't let you know what I did vs others, then that is not my problem.
Ehixh. Is me. Or a part of me. At least. Or a negative image of me. Where black is white, and white is black. Inverted. Inert. Enter the rodeo circle, the horse is mightier than the pen. The horse will throw us all of. We get bored. Or tear up. Or scream at the Internet for allowing this vileness. These meme machines.
Ehixh signing in.

Writer’s Questionnaire
Tagged by @a-shakespearean-in-paris thank you! ❤️
Short stories, novels, or poems? Most of the things I have written are short stories and one shots. I’m trying to write a longfic at the moment and holy shit is it hard. As for poetry, I’m absolutely awful at it.
What genre do you prefer reading? I like to read romance for the most part because I’m a sucker for all the pining trips and happy endings and I also like reading suspense/mystery books. I’ve read lots of YA novels in the past, but I feel as if I’m starting to lean away from the genre a bit.
What genre do you prefer writing?
Romance! :D I feel ridiculous for saying it since I have no experience on the subject, but it’s something that I like to daydream about.
Are you a planner or a write-as-I-go kind of person? It depends. Sometimes I plan things out and sometimes ideas strike me as I write. I really wish the latter would happen more often, because planning things can be a pain for me at times.
What music do you listen to while writing? It’s a variety of different genres. If I want a random playlist I'll use Pandora but I tend to listen to my own playlists whenever I want to get into a certain mood or feeling for a scene. The playlist I'm using now has a bit of Hozier, Sleeping At Last and City And Colour.
Fave books/movies?
My all time favorite series is Legend by Marie Lu. These books basically sparked my interest in reading while I was in a dark place in life. As for movies... I’m sad to say I don’t really have any. I’ve been in a weird place where I get bored or impatient when I try to watch one by myself and end up just googling the ending.
Any current WIPs? I’m slowly working on With Gentle Hands, which is a modern au longfic with my inquisitor (Lily) and Cullen. I’ll be honest - the whole thing is self-indulgent xD There will be lots of fluff and a bit of family drama and two goofball mabaris that keep trying to be matchmakers for two pining dorks.
I also have a WIP list that is just a bunch of ideas which I’m hoping to get to soon.
If someone were to make a cartoon out of you, what would your standard outfit be? A beanie with jeans, a jacket and some boots.
Create a character description for yourself:
There were moments when she wasn’t sure what she was doing. Hell, who was she kidding, that was most of the time. The only thing she could do was to carry out her plans anyway, even though it felt as if she was trying to avoid stepping on broken glass that was scattered around every person she encountered. It was exhausting, and she was tired, but she refused to let her fear get in her way.
Do you like incorporating people you actually know into your writing? I have a few characters that have a few traits of some people I know, specifically family. They’re loosely based, though.
Are you kill-happy with characters? NO ;-; lol. There have been some implied deaths in my writing for Lily in canon, but aside from that, I just can’t do that to my characters xD
Coffee or tea while writing? I drink tea more than coffee, but I rarely drink it while writing.
Slow or fast writer? Slow -_- although when inspiration hits, the writing can just flow freely. I love it when that happens.
Where/who/what do you find inspiration from? Mostly music. I would be listening to a song and then my mind would conjure up a scene. When that happens, I immediately add that song to my playlist :D
If you were put into a fantasy world, what would you be? I’d probably be a witch living a cottage deep inside the forest.
Most fave book cliche? Least fave book cliche? I love most romantic tropes, but *clenches fists* PINING GETS ME EVERY DAMN TIME. It makes the moment they officially confess the feeling and get together all the more better, in my opinion :D
My least favorite book cliches are love triangles and sexual “confidence/dominance” that can pretty much pass for assault.
Fave scenes to write? I really like writing internal monologues. I wrote quite a bit of this for my first couple of one-shots.
Most productive time of day for writing? Mostly at night at 2am because my brain is a douche -_-
Reason for writing? I find it fun to create scenes and characters :D I started writing during a bad time in my life and I found it to be very therapeutic.
I don’t know who has done this since these last few days have been hectic, so I'll leave it as an open tag. If you do it, tag me so I can see :D

Verse/AU Masterlist  ;; (a comprehensive list of current verses i have for most muses on this blog for reference)
Asahi ;;
deaf/hoh au : asahi is hard of hearing from birth, getting implants only when he gets to middle school when he discovers volleyball and desperately wants to play on an actual team. he only wears them when playing or in class, however, and most of his teammates have learned at least simple signing to help make him comfortable because he still finds it a little overwhelming after not hearing for so many years.
superpower/bnha au : asahi is best described as a healer, though in a deeper sense what he can do is actually use his powers to rewrite and boost the body’s natural ability to heal. it can also be used in an offensive manner, to both control or halt a body’s movement, but he refuses to use it for that. the power attracted quite a bit of attention, and not always the good kind, which causes him a bit of trouble over his years of schooling. he’s currently keeping a low profile after graduation, though he tries to help where he can.
werewolf au : asahi is a werewolf who was bitten as a teenager. he’s very timid, and refuses to go out if there’s even a chance he’ll turn out of fear of hurting or biting anyone else. currently living with hunters suga and daichi, who are aware of what he is but also that he’s no harm to anyone and therefore there’s no need to be worried.
royalty au : asahi is the only son of the king and queen of a failing kingdom. his father tries his best, but things were already going poorly when he took over and it’s slowly falling into chaos, both from its people and outside forces trying to take advantage of it. asahi finds himself caught up in the middle rather often, most people not too happy with the idea of the ‘soft’ prince taking charge if something were to happen to his father, though those close to him are aware of his inner strength and believe he could be the change their kingdom needs.
pacific rim : asahi is a physically impressive pilot with a bit of a mental weakness that makes him difficult to drift with. early on in his career he had a major fight that ended with both him and the other pilot badly injured when he nearly fell out of the drift mid-battle, and he ended up briefly retiring until he was convinced to come back and try again.
hogwarts au : sorted into hufflepuff, currently chaser on his team; which does surprisingly well, and mostly because of him, though he doesn’t really see it.
Break
modern/reincarnation au : break is one of the few who remembers clearly everything that happened in his old life, and still maintains a bit of connection the powers of the abyss. he is blind from birth, however, and considers this to be a punishment for everything he’d done in his previous life. he is also diabetic and has an incredibly weak constitution, but is stubbornly independent and tries not to let any of it show. he currently lives with the rainsworth family and works for them.
superpower/bnha au :  break has the power to nullify someone’s abilities for a brief time, although he has to be able to touch their bare skin to do so. he’s also proficient with his sword-cane and uses it to take advantage of his opponents once they’re fumbling without their powers. it doesn’t work very well against physical powers, of course. he currently works as a hero under the name “mad hatter”
Courfeyrac
blindverse :  courfeyrac loses his vision at a rally when he’s hit over the head, damaging the nerves, and is unlikely to ever regain it. he’s adjusting, but not very steady on his own yet, after a little while he does start learning braille and gets a guide dog so he could go out on his own, a golden retriever named marguerite (maggie). he’s not exactly happy about what happened and generally feels useless and down about it.
superpower/bnha au : courfeyrac has the power to manipulate weather, both to either just make it warmer or colder, or make is rain or storm, as well as causing gusts of wind, etc. it’s tied mostly to his emotions and he doesn’t have very good control over it.
the 100 au : is one of the original 100 sent to the ground. is the second son born to his parents, who gave him up to another family member so he wouldn’t be discovered.
royalty au : courf is a servant to the prince. his father was a noble who refused to admit that he had slept with a serving woman, tricking his mother into believing she’d be fired from her position if she said anything. courf has strong beliefs against the way nobility treated people they believed were beneath them, and it tends to get him into a bit of trouble.
hogwarts au : sorted into gryffindor, eventually becomes prefect, and then head boy of his house. well loved, a pureblood who most certainly believes that it doesn’t make him better than anyone else.
Gilbert
modern reincarnation au : gil doesn’t have any of his memories of his previous life. him and vincent were brought up in an orphanage until he was adopted by oscar (who did have his memories) and taken into their home. he moves out a little after he turned 18, and went into training to be a police officer, currently working as a security officer in a large office building to make some money in the meantime. despite not having his memories, he has one of the strongest connections remaining to the abyss.
superpower/bnha au : has a teleportation ability, where he makes little portals to travel from point to point. he has to have an idea of where he’s going in mind when he does so, and his range is only within a few miles. it’s a physically exhausting power, but very useful in emergency situations.
vampire/hunter au : gil and vincent are born with vampire blood, but aren’t full vampires. gil is meant to be the next leader of the vampires, depite his lack of being one himself, and when vincent finds out they’re planning on turning him he makes a deal with a witch to get gilbert away. eventually gil ends up at the vessalius household, and joins the pandora organization as a vampire hunter, unaware of his past.
hogwarts au : hufflepuff, raised in the vessalius family. one year ahead of oz, two in front of vincent. becomes prefect easily in his fifth year.
Noé
modern au : a young vampire whose entire family line was killed when he was a child, and was taken in by his teacher and kept isolated from the human world. eventually goes off on his own, and is constantly fascinated and confused by most things human, which tends to get him in a bit of trouble.
Yuuri
pacific rim au : joined the program out of an admiration for viktor along with his best friend, yuuko. after a fight which left her injured and unable to continue he nearly withdraws entirely from the program; until viktor, who had currently been paired with yuri, sought him out at home after following his story on the news. he could see potential in yuuri, and didn’t think he deserved to stay benched on the sidelines. currently drift compatible with both viktor and yuri interchangeably, though he drifts with viktor more often for obvious reasons.
superpower/bnha au : yuuri is an empath, who can both sense and feel the emotions of others as well as effect them, able to calm people down or make them feel better. it takes a bit of a toll on him, and he doesn’t like to be in heavily crowded spaces very often. it’s not a very offensive power, and he tends to stay at the sidelines.
royalty au : yuuri is the prince of a small kingdom, with very little pressure on his shoulders since his sister will end up taking the throne when the time comes. has a major crush on viktor, the prince of a much larger kingdom a little ways away, and eventually marries him.

Chapter 12
Regina looked at the apple in her hand for a long, long time.
She could remember the day Snow White took a bite out of that apple like it was yesterday. The tears on her face, the sadness in her eyes. The way she had fallen, lifeless, at Regina’s feet. Now she needed that kind of magic one more time.
It had taken a lot of effort to bring the poisoned apple through into the Land Without Magic. It took allying herself with the Mad Hatter once again, making deals she didn’t want to make; it took giving up the last memento she had of Daniel, her first and only love. But finally, she had done it, reached through and plucked a poisoned apple out of that place and brought it through to this one. It was her last hope; if she couldn’t stop Emma Swan with this, then the curse would be broken.
Baking was soothing to Regina, and she secretly loved every convenience in her modern American kitchen. The pleasing fall of the flour in gentle waves from the sifter into the bowl. The precise leveling-off of baking powder in a teaspoon as she scraped it along the sharp lip of the can. The smell of cinnamon pervading the kitchen as her apple slices cooked on the stovetop. The sensation of butter under her fingertips as she blended it with the flour, the little blobs getting smaller and smaller and smaller as she worked. She pulled out her rolling pin, running her hand along the smooth, polished wood, and smiled.
Once the baking was done and the product of her labors was cool enough to pack away, she carried it to her car, glancing at the time on the dashboard. There were still a few hours until Henry was done at school: plenty of time.
Regina mounted the stairs to the loft apartment that Emma shared with Mary Margaret Blanchard, eyeing the peeling paint and the dirt in the corners of the stairwell with distaste. She hadn’t wanted to set foot in this peasant’s dwelling, but when she’d called the sheriff’s station, David had informed her that Emma was taking the morning off and wouldn’t be in until the afternoon. Typical laziness, Regina thought with a sneer. But it would work in Regina’s favor; if Emma was home alone, there was less risk that someone else would eat the apple turnover.
She knocked on the door.
Emma opened it, her eyes widening in surprise. “Regina! What are you doing here?”
Regina huffed. “I’ll excuse your rudeness on account of the fact that you look like death warmed over. Are you sick?” She took a step backward, tempted to cover her nose and mouth with her arm.
“I’m not sick, I just haven’t been sleeping well the last couple of nights.” Emma stood back from the door. “Come in, I guess.”
Regina stepped into the apartment, grimacing at its shabby chic decor. If possible, Snow White’s cursed taste was worse than it had been back in the Enchanted Forest.
“What brings you here, Regina? Come to tell me to stay away from Henry again?”
“On the contrary,” she responded, holding the plastic storage container out toward Emma. “I came to make a peace offering. And to discuss how we might… compromise regarding Henry.”
Emma took the container, eyeing it distrustfully. “What’s this?”
“One of my famous apple turnovers. It’s a very old recipe.” “Thanks.” She set it down on the table. “What kind of compromise did you have in mind?”
Regina gritted her teeth. Even knowing she didn’t intend to follow through with any offers she planned to make to this woman, she still could barely get the words out. “I recognize that once one opens Pandora’s box, it cannot be closed again, and Henry is determined that you be part of his life, no matter how ill-advised I know it to be.” She held up a hand to stop Emma’s protest. “He is still my son, not only in the legal sense, but because I was the one who was there for him from the beginning. I changed every diaper, dried every tear. He may not want to acknowledge it now, but he is my child.” Regina pressed her nails into her palms, trembling with emotion.
“I’m not denying that, Regina.”
“As such, I am not offering you any kind of joint custody. But I am resigned to the fact that you are going to be a part of his life. So you can see him for visits on some school day afternoons, and also for some weekend activities, so long as I approve them.”
She could tell Emma was surprised. “Thanks. Really. I appreciate that.”
Regina nodded curtly. “Let me talk it over with Henry tonight, and then perhaps in a day or two you can have him over here to eat dinner, assuming you’re capable of preparing something more nutritious than grilled cheese.”
Emma rolled her eyes. “I’ll make sure he eats his vegetables, Regina.”
Regina nodded, glancing down at the turnover. “I’ll go, then. Enjoy the turnover.”
~*~
Emma was still in shock as she drove the police cruiser down Route 83. She’d been at a loss for what to do about Henry, had still been half contemplating kidnapping him and fleeing Maine despite Mary Margaret’s logical arguments against it when in walked Regina and surrendered. Or, as close to surrender as she would imagine Regina could ever get.
She pulled up in front of Gold’s cabin and killed the engine. After their impromptu nap the day before, Killian had seemed afraid of overstaying his welcome and had refused Mary Margaret’s offer to stay for dinner. But outside the apartment, saying goodnight, he had kissed her like he might never have the opportunity to do so again, with a desperate hunger that left Emma’s knees weak.
She’d awoken this morning with renewed purpose. The sooner she figured out who had really killed Gold, the sooner she and Killian could move forward with whatever they were becoming.  Calling David and offering to work the late shift at the station, she decided to spend her afternoon going more carefully over the cabin, looking for clues she might have missed the first time.
The sun was bright, melting snow that had drifted down during the night so that it fell from weighed-down tree branches onto her car in fat droplets. Even though it was a cold day, the blue sky and bright sunlight made Emma feel optimistic and hopeful. Things with Killian were good. Mary Margaret and David were disgustingly happy together. Regina was going to let her see Henry. Finally, it felt like her life was settling into place.
Emma tore away the crime scene tape she had David had put up over the cabin door and let herself in.
The orderliness of the main living space of the cabin had led her to conclude that nothing had been disturbed initially, that nothing had been tampered with. But clearly, the killer had been here, based on the blood they found in the bathroom. Perhaps her assessment had been wrong. She went over everything again, looking under furniture and in kitchen cabinets, behind shelves and under rugs. Nothing.
She walked the length of the room, her boots thumping against the wooden floorboards. The murder weapon could be anywhere in Storybrooke, but something about this cabin still niggled at her. The killer had come here and washed the blood off his hands. Wouldn’t it have been too tempting a place to hide the murder weapon, rather than bringing it back into town and risk being caught with it?
She continued to pace, eyes touching on everything in the room.
There was still a voice in her head, whispering that despite her gut instincts, despite her superpower, any logical person in her position should still consider Killian a suspect. She’d argued it around and around in her head all morning, all the reasons he was suspicious, all the reasons he wasn’t. It was driving her crazy. She needed to solve this crime before it was too late, before she fell completely in love with him.
It’s already too late, the voice in her head muttered.
Her foot connected with one of the floorboards, and the rhythmic thump of her boot heel changed timbre. Echoed. Emma looked down at her feet.
The fucking floorboards.
Dropping to her knees, she felt around the edges of the board, feeling it wiggle slightly as she looked for purchase to lift it out. She clawed at the end, fingernails slipping into the tiny gap, and pulled. One of her fingernails ripped.
“Fuck.” She sucked on the end of her finger, then almost slapped herself on the forehead when she remembered she had a Swiss army knife on her keychain.
Using the knife blade for leverage, the board lifted away easily, revealing a narrow dark space underneath. Putting away her knife, Emma pulled the flashlight off of her belt and clicked it on.
At first, the space looked empty, but then she noticed a black lump. Reaching down into the hole, she grabbed it and pulled it out, her hand trembling with excitement.
The hilt of a knife stuck out from a tightly wrapped bundle of black cotton. It looked like a T-shirt, stiff with what must be dried blood. Careful not to touch the knife hilt itself, she set the bundle down and stared at it.
The blade was completely covered, so she couldn’t tell if it was curved like the coroner’s report had indicated it would be. Her hand reached out to start to unwrap it, but then she jerked it back.
In her haste to get out here, she’d forgotten her evidence kits. The last thing she wanted to do was accidentally destroy evidence. Anxious as she was to see the blade, it would have to wait until she could get it back to the station.
Her cell phone rang.
Emma touched the screen without looking at who was calling and put it to her ear. “Hello?”
“Hey, it’s Henry.”
“Henry, I’m working right now; what’s up?” Picking the bundled knife up, still avoiding the hilt, Emma stood.
“I just talked to Mom. I think you’re in trouble.”
“Actually, no. I saw Regina this morning, and she’s agreed to let us see each other sometimes. It was almost a good talk.” Emma left the cabin, setting the evidence on the passenger seat of the cruiser.
“Exactly. Something’s fishy. Why would she suddenly change her mind like that? I think it’s a trick. The Evil Queen always has a trick up her sleeve.”
Emma walked back to the door, resecuring the crime scene tape. “Or she’s decided to be reasonable for once.”
“No way. If she’s being nice to you, then you’re in danger.” She could hear a hysterical edge coming into his voice, and the image of Killian pushing Henry out of the way of an oncoming car flashed in her mind.
“Henry, where are you?”
“Pay phone near Granny’s. I couldn’t risk calling you from her house.”
“Okay, okay, just … go to the loft and wait for me there. Can you do that?”
He sighed. “Yeah, I can do that.” He sounded calmer.
“Watch out for cars when you cross the street, okay, Henry?”
“Duh,” was the only response she got before he hung up the phone.
Emma got behind the wheel of the car and looked longingly at what was almost certainly the murder weapon sitting on the seat beside her. She needed to get back to the station and examine it, then lock it up somewhere safe. But she also needed to go calm Henry down.
With a grimace, she put the car in gear and peeled out.
~*~
Henry was sitting on the steps next to the door of the loft, waiting for her.
“Here you are! I was starting to worry that Mom got you.”
Emma unlocked the apartment, ushering him in. “I was out in the woods doing some work. Regina didn’t ‘get’ me.”
“She’s got a plan though, I know it. She doesn’t surrender. She knows you’re close to breaking the curse, and she’s making a move.” His voice rose in pitch.
Tears sprang to Emma’s eyes as guilt churned in her belly. His break with reality was getting worse. Her son was so damaged, and nothing she or anyone else did was making him any better. She’d given him up because she thought it would give him a better life, and instead he was delusional. As poisoned by this town as Graham. As Killian.
“Henry,” she said, swallowing against a lump in her throat. She knelt down, taking his arms in her hands. “There’s no curse. There’s no evil queen. There’s no fairy tale. There’s just us, doing the best we can to get through our lives. Regina too, maybe she’s doing the best she can with a difficult situation—“
“No!” Henry shouted, jerking away from her. His gaze settled on the kitchen table. “What’s that?” he said, pointing at the plastic container that Regina had left.
“I don’t know, some kind of dessert that Regina brought over.”
Henry ran over, ripping the top off. “Is this apple? Don’t eat it,” he said, hysteria in his voice.
“Why?”
“It’s poisoned. This is the trick. She’s trying to curse you.”
“With a poisoned apple? Henry, that isn’t a real thing.” Emma walked over and picked up the pastry. “Here, I’ll show you.”
“No!” he shouted, jerking it out of her hand and backing away. “I’m sorry to do this, Mom. But you’ll be able to save me. You may not believe in the curse, but I believe in you.” He took a bite of the apple turnover.
Emma watched him sadly as he chewed and swallowed. “See? There’s no—“
Henry collapsed to the floor.
“Henry?” She fell onto her knees at his side. “Henry! Henry!”
~*~
“What did he eat?” Dr. Whale was asking her while another doctor and nurses fussed around Henry’s gurney in the hospital room. Emma watched, paralyzed, as an IV needle pierced the tender flesh on the top of his little hand.
“Sheriff, what did he eat?” Dr. Whale said more sharply.
“It was… it was an apple turnover that Regina made. What’s wrong with him?”
“We don’t know yet,” he looked at the monitors. The colored lines and numbers swam in Emma’s vision.
“Could this be, you know, psychological? He was trying to convince me…” She trailed off.
“No way,” he said. “His brain waves are minimal, heartbeat slow and thready. Something happened to him.”
Emma looked around, just in time to see Regina run into the hallway on the other side of the glass wall. Rage poured into her, filling every crevice. Emma hit the doors full force, barreling out to meet Regina head on.
“What the hell happened?” Regina asked.
“You did this,” Emma grated, trembling with anger. “The poison that was meant for me. Henry ate it instead.”
If there was any doubt left in her mind, the look on Regina’s face destroyed it. “No…”
“You hated me so much that you poisoned your own child.”
“I didn’t… it wasn’t…” Tears fell from Regina’s eyes, and she made no move to brush them away.
Emma didn’t care. She felt no sympathy for this monster of a woman. She shoved her against the wall. “Do you have something that can fix this? An antidote?”
Her face crumpling under the weight of her grief and guilt, Regina shook her head.
“Then get the hell away from here. I have no use for you, and neither does my son.”
Emma was too shaken, too horrified by the events of the last several minutes to even be surprised when Regina obeyed her.
It was only seconds later, as she stood in the corridor breathing deeply and trying to calm herself down, that Killian arrived. She didn’t remember calling him, but she figured David must have. Without thought, she stumbled over and fell into his arms.
“Emma, what happened?”
“Henry,” she gasped, but couldn’t get any more words out.
“Dave said something about poison?” She nodded, clinging to him. Now that he was here, she felt like she had to luxury to fall apart a little bit.
“I’m sure the doctors are doing everything they can to make him better. Tell me what I can do. I’ll do anything you need. Anything.”
Emma looked up into his kind eyes. “Just be here. All I need is for you to be here.”
“Always,” he said, and she got the sense that he wasn’t only talking about Henry and the hospital.
Mary Margaret and David ran through the double doors, both of them out of breath. “I’ve got the apple thing,” David said, holding up a plastic bag.
“Take it to Dr. Whale,” Emma said, pulling away from Killian.
“I brought his backpack,” Mary Margaret offered, tears welling up in her eyes. “I don’t know why; I saw it in the loft and I thought he might want it.”
Emma nodded, swallowing against a sob that was struggling to break free. “Thanks, Mary Margaret.”
~*~
Machines beeped, and Emma listened to the beeping, trying to discern if it was getting slower. She felt a squeeze of her hand and she squeezed back, her fingers interlaced with Killian’s.
“Maybe if Dr. Whale keeps working on it…” Mary Margaret said.
“He can’t find anything that would explain Henry’s symptoms. And if he doesn’t find something soon, Henry’s going to run out of time.” A cold detachment was seeping into her. Her son was lying in the middle of that sterile bed, wires and tubes everywhere, looking so small, and she couldn’t do anything. Well, maybe there was one thing she could do. She could wrap her hands around Regina’s neck and squeeze until the life drained out of her.
“Don’t give up hope, Emma. Henry wouldn’t want that.” Mary Margaret, sitting on her other side, reached down into his backpack and pulled out the storybook. “That’s why he loves these stories so much. Because they give him hope.”
“False hope,” Emma said.
Silence settled over their vigil once again.
Killian cleared his throat. “Why don’t I go get us all some coffee?”
David smiled gratefully. “That’s a good idea. Here, let me…” He started reaching for his wallet.
“I got it, mate; don’t worry about it.” He gave Emma’s hand another squeeze, standing. “Do you want coffee?”
She didn’t, but she nodded. Killian left the room, making minimal noise as he did. Everyone was moving around silently, like they were in the presence of death and didn’t want to attract its attention.
Emma watched as Mary Margaret ran her fingertips over the embossed words on the cover of Henry’s book before opening it and paging through. “Maybe I should read to him?” Mary Margaret asked.
Emma frowned, looking at the book. A part of her wanted to burn it. “He wants that story to be true so badly. Wants… wants you to be those people. My parents.” She smiled in spite of herself. “He’s so convinced that Snow White is my mom and Prince Charming is my dad.”
David and Mary Margaret shared a significant look. “Emma, do you ever…” Mary Margaret trailed off, her eyes pleading with David for something.
“What?”
“I’m not saying we’re Snow White and Prince Charming,” Mary Margaret said with a nervous laugh. “But sometimes I think… I don’t know, maybe in a past life or something, we are your parents?”
Before Emma could react to that, David chimed in. “Mary Margaret and I have always felt this pull, like we were meant to be together. Like, no matter what we did or what roadblocks were in the way, we would find our way to each other. And we realized recently that in a different way, we felt the same way toward you. That we’re meant to help you.”
“It’s more than that,” Mary Margaret said. “When you moved in with me, something… clicked, like that was where you were supposed to be.”
“Same when we started working together,” David added.
“I don’t know, Emma; I know it’s crazy,” Mary Margaret said. “I know it doesn’t make any sense, but it feels true. Doesn’t it?”
Emma was crying. She wasn’t sure when she started, but tears were running down her cheeks and falling onto her lap. “It feels true,” she echoed, looking back and forth between David and Mary Margaret. “But it can’t be. You can’t be my parents.”
Mary Margaret held the book out to her. “Unless… unless Henry’s right. Unless the curse is real.”
Emma laughed sharply through her tears. “Not you too. You can't believe this stuff.”
“All I know,” and now Mary Margaret was crying. “All I know is what I feel when I look at you, Emma.”
“And what's that?” she asked, her breath hitching.
David got out of his chair, coming over and kneeling in front of her. “I was in a coma for years, and all it took for me to wake up was the sound of Mary Margaret's voice. Anything is possible. What I know is that somehow, long ago, we lost you, but now we've found you again.”
“Henry is the truest believer I've ever known,” Mary Margaret said, still holding out the book. “Maybe he needs some of that belief from us now.”
Emma looked over at Henry, lying there so helpless, and reached out and took the book from Mary Margaret.
A rush of images filled her head.
A woman, screaming as she gave birth in a canopied bed. Tears over the baby. Saying goodbye. A man holding the baby and fighting off four, no five guards. His blood soaking his shirt and dripping onto the floor. Kissing the baby, and putting her in a wardrobe.
“Find us.”
Emma gasped.
“It’s true.”
Suddenly a very different chaos filled her head. Beeping machines. A rush of doctors and nurses. She was screaming. Strong arms pulled her away. Strong hands doing CPR on a tiny body. Regina on the other side of the glass partition, her face a mask of pain. Everything through a blur of tears. A slowing down. A nurse started to disconnect things from Henry. Through it all, Emma clutched the book.
“I’m sorry,” Dr. Whale said, and it sounded like his voice was coming from the bottom of a well. “We did everything we could. He’s gone.”
Released by David, Emma stumbled to the bedside. Henry looked so peaceful, lying there. He couldn’t be dead. Death couldn’t be so peaceful, could it?
“I’m sorry. You were right about the curse. I should have believed you.” Her voice sounded strange, high-pitched and reedy. Trembling, tears running down her face, Emma smoothed his hair and bent over. “I love you, Henry.” Gently, she kissed him on the forehead.
Behind her closed eyes, Emma saw a strange, prismatic light, almost as if she’d looked at the sun too long and was seeing some kind of afterimage on her retina. At the same time, a wind blew her hair back, made her stumble away from Henry. Emma blinked, startled, looking around for the source of the disturbance.
Henry gasped, and sat up.
“Henry!” Emma couldn’t believe her eyes. He was sitting right there, breathing, impossibly alive.
“You did it,” he said to her. “You saved me.”
There was a commotion behind Emma, and she looked over to see David and Mary Margaret in each other’s arms.
“You found me,” Mary Margaret said.
“Did you ever doubt I would?” David responded. Both of them seemed very close to breaking down into sobs right there in Henry’s hospital room.
“What… happened?” Emma looked around and saw that everyone, doctors and nurses alike, seemed to be in a state of shock and confusion, but it wasn’t directed at Henry.
“I think you broke the curse,” Henry said.
“Emma,” David gasped. He stumbled over, pulling her into a hug, his hand cradling her head. “Our daughter.” Mary Margaret joined them, her hands clutching at Emma. At a loss for what else to do, Emma hugged them back.
~*~
Regina’s hands pressed against the glass, her heart hammering in her chest as she watched Henry sit up. She laughed with momentary joy. Her son wasn’t dead. Emma had saved him.
Gradually, she became aware that something else was happening. Mary Margaret and David weren’t focused on Henry, they were focused on each other. A nurse dropped a tray of surgical implements in the hall, a look of shock on her face. Dr. Whale ran past, a panicked, crazy look in his eye.
“The curse is broken, your majesty,” a voice growled in her ear.
Regina whirled, coming face to face with Killian Jones. No. Coming face to face with Hook.
He may have still been dressed in jeans, his innocuous prosthetic hand still in place, but it was immediately obvious that he carried himself differently. There was no question that he knew who he was.
“Let me give you a piece of advice, free of charge,” he said. “Everyone is getting their memories back, and they’re realizing what you’ve done.” He leaned even closer, and Regina had to force herself not to back away. “You need to find a place to hide.”
“You killed him, didn’t you?” she whispered. “You killed Rumpelstiltskin.”
He grinned, running his tongue along his bottom lip. “You’ve been trying so hard to get your hands on that dagger. Looks like your time ran out, Regina.” He glanced around as if expecting someone to jump out and attack her at any moment. “Now run.”

Not believing hadn’t prevented him from dusting the shelves and washing the sheets and accumulating stupid knick-knacks for Cas to have because they had reminded Dean of him.

Joining Cas on good-old-fashioned hunting trips, occasionally aided by Crowley, he soon learns there are more good monsters out there than he ever thought possible. And they need a protector.

Dean cuts himself off and Castiel strains to pick up more. Dean’s longing is still strong, and a tug from Sam’s soul echoes in Castiel’s grace. After so many years, Sam is a brother in all but blood to Castiel. And Dean, well. Dean says “you’re our brother” and also “I need you” and Castiel can’t help but think maybe Dean doesn’t always say what’s really in his heart.

Countdown: Top 3 Fairy Tales Used in Retellings
Tumblr media
Fairy tales are my bread and butter as a writer. When I was young, I was introduced to them via the Disney Renaissance movies: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, most notably. As soon as I saw them in theatres, I had to read about them. As I grew older and the internet became a thing, I read more about fairy tales from other parts of the world and gained access to some of the older versions of my old favorites. These tales are my foundation as a fantasy writer.
My favorite tales were always full of magic and wonder. I even liked some of the pure morality tales, like “The Girl Without Hands” or “The Red Shoes.” My imagination flew as a child and the very first story I wrote was about a girl who lived in a magical volcano. I didn't even know who Pele was at the time, otherwise I would have given her credit. I devoured any book that had to do with witches, wizards, magic, and mystery.
So the surge in retellings has made me a happy reader indeed.
Retelling tales isn't a new concept, given how often fairy tales were translated into different languages and adopted to different cultures, but the modern upswing has gone far beyond that. Favorite, beloved stories are transformed until they're almost unrecognizable. Some are used more often than others, but which ones are the most popular? What elements about them draw writers and readers alike into their worlds? Welcome, dear reader, as we look at the 3 most popular fairy tales used in retellings and why we keep coming back to them.
Certain fairy tales have a more timeless feel than others. Their stories resonate with readers for generations. They inspire us centuries after their creation and touch the most fundamentally human parts of our hearts. When talking about fairy tales, these could be considered “The Big Three” in how often they're used in retellings.
1. Beauty and the Beast
Thanks to Disney's critically acclaimed animated feature, this tale catapulted to popularity, but even before then, people knew of it. Whether it was the more commonly published Marie Leprince de Beaumont or Andrew Lang version, the original publication by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, or even the myth of Eros and Psyche, the tale of a girl who falls in love with a monster, only to discover he's in truth a handsome prince, has been known for ages. It has charmed and enchanted readers with its magic, romance, and mystery.
But what about this tale encourages so many retellings?
Let's take a look.
At its core, “Beauty and the Beast” has a universal message: the transforming power of love. It isn't just the Beast's transformation to handsome prince, but it's how a person changes themselves for someone they love. It's about how we as people want to be our best possible selves when we're in love and how that change takes time. “Beauty and the Beast” is one of the few fairy tales where love grows over time. It reflects real life and that powerful message of love is something that resonates with humanity as a whole.
There's also the message of kindness and how it shouldn't be denied to anyone, man or beast. To deny kindness is, in itself, a beastly behavior and what caused the prince to be transformed in the first place. When he is shown and gives kindness, he becomes less a beast and more a human being. This kindness resonates in a secondary message of looking beneath the surface of a person to see the beauty within.
Fairy tale heroines were the original beauty queens. They were fair, delicate, and good. They shone with virtue. The heroine in “Beauty and the Beast” is no exception. She is a good, dutiful daughter, the most beautiful of her sisters, well-read, and the purest of heart. Their princes were handsome, strong men, to match the heroine's beauty. Not the Beast. The Beast was such a prince, but becomes what would usually be the monster of the tale. It takes kindness and courage on Beauty's part to look past his exterior and see who he really is. Her strength and caring resonates with readers young and old.
“Beauty and the Beast” has the most potential to be shaped into a new version of itself. Its basic, touching messages combined with elements of magic, romance, and mystery are wonderful ingredients to create new tales as old as time.
2. Cinderella
Although I love “Beauty and the Beast,” I have to admit that “Cinderella” is my favorite fairy tale of all time. “Cinderella” has always spoken to me in ways that other stories didn't. There are thousands of versions all over the world, from every culture, but the oldest recorded version is of Rhodopis, as told by Strabo, a Greek geographer. The most well known versions are by Charles Perrault (“Cendrillon”) and the Brothers Grimm (“Aschenputtel”), but the first European version was published by Giambattista Basile (“Cenerentola”). Each version has its differences, but what is it about the story of a young girl who goes to a ball that compels writers to retell it so many different ways?
The core of “Cinderella” is no less powerful than “Beauty and the Beast” but it has a dark side: this is a fairy tale of abuse and the power of hope. In both Perrault and the Grimm versions of the tale, the Cinderella character is forced into a life of servitude after her mother dies and her father remarries. Also in both tales, and what makes it far worse, is that the father survives and allows this abuse of his only child. It's a sad state, but often seen in reality: children neglected and abused by their parents, the people meant to protect and love them. When, or if, they survive, it's a marvel of personal strength and character.
Despite all of the insults, chores, and sorrow heaped upon her, Cinderella never gives up hope. She never loses her kind nature, which takes strength all on its own. To resist abuse, to resist falling into the pit of hate and hopelessness and anger, requires an iron will and great courage, something often overlooked in Cinderella tales.
The message of hope, of never giving up, is one that also resonates through the changing times. Humanity itself exists on hope, going all the way back to the tale of Pandora's Box, and it's the one thing we keep with us, always. Because Cinderella has hope and courage, she is able to retain her good heart in the face of adversity, and is rewarded for it. While the real world isn't so kind, and having a good heart isn't a guarantee of reward, we still hope. We hope that somehow, someday, that strength will be rewarded.
Cinderella may have wanted a night off and a pretty dress to go to a party after a lifetime of slaving away for her family, but she's so much more than that. She's strong. The kind of strong modern readers want in their leading ladies.
3. Snow White
I have to admit, “Snow White” isn't one of my favorite fairy tales, although I do like some of the recent retellings. Originally published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 and called, “Schneewittchen,” it obtained its final version in 1854. It's one of the few fairy tales that doesn't have prior origins but is strictly native to its homeland of Germany. In comparison to the other two on this list, it's relatively young. Funny that, because it suits the main character perfectly. Snow White was around 7 years old when she was chased from her home by her stepmother (originally her mother in the first published version) and while Disney aged her to 14 years, she's still incredibly young and innocent.
Not to mention beautiful.
On the surface, Snow White embodies little of the strength of character that Beauty and Cinderella do. In the original tale, her father remarries and her stepmother comes to hate her, she is not made into a servant. She is still allowed to live as a princess. It's only until the queen can no longer contain her jealousy that she orders Snow White killed.
While Snow White faces greater hardship, in that someone actually attempts to murder her, she never saves herself. Her innocence leads her to fall for the queen's tricks 3 times, making a total of 4 attempts, if you count the huntsman. The dwarves are the ones who save her from herself and naivete. The prince saves her when the glass coffin she sleeps in is dropped and she spits out the bit of apple. The core message could be about innocence, and how the wicked try to kill it, but I think “Snow White” has a different appeal.
Rather than a universal message, it has a villain who has become beloved by the masses: the evil queen.
Jealousy is one of the basest human emotions. Everyone, myself included, has been jealous of something or someone at one point in life. The sheer dislike, anger, and sense of injustice against someone else possessing what we covet is the darker side of the human psyche and one that's explored briefly in the Brothers Grimm tale. The queen's jealousy is fueled by her obsession with two things: beauty and, to a lesser extent, youth.
In the original fairy tale, the queen is a pure villain. She has no background to justify her motives behind wanting to be fairest in the land. She simply wants it. When Snow White becomes more beautiful than her, she wants to kill the child and eliminate the problem. She has no qualms about murdering her own stepdaughter and attempts to do so multiple times. At the end, she goes to the wedding to kill the young bride, not knowing it's Snow White, so deep is her obsessive need to be the fairest of them all.
But why? What drives this obsession?
That's what writers around the world have done when reimagining and retelling the “Snow White” tale. They delve into the backstory of the queen. Writers are drawn to this type of character, who can be given a complex and compelling background to explain how she came to be and the reason behind her obsession. The possibilities are endless and it frees the imagination in a way that “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella” don't.
Neither story has such open characters. Both the queen and Snow White can be reinterpreted, Snow White could be given a gun and a backbone, the queen could be a lonely girl forced to marry a man she doesn't love, the list goes on and on. That, I think, more than any universal message is what draws writers into using Snow White in their retellings.
Plus, who doesn't love a story about a wicked queen trying to poison our heroine and the heroine actually doing something about it?
With 3 such rich tales, it's no wonder the market has exploded with retellings. Some of the more recent ones include the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, and “The Shadow Queen” by C.J. Redwine. More are being released every month. I, myself, am looking forward to reading, “Forest of a Thousand Lanterns” by Julie C. Dao, released just this month. Funny enough, it's a “Snow White” retelling, featuring the Evil Queen and set in East Asia. Fairy tale retellings are emerging from all cultural backgrounds and to a voracious book dragon like myself, that is the best tale of all.
Thanks for stopping by, dear reader, and look for new blog posts on Tuesdays. I've got a secret project in the works that I'll be posting updates about with my posts so look for that in the future too. Please like, comment, or reblog if you enjoyed this post, and until next time, it's lights out at the lookout.

99) Do you believe in love at first sight?
No, I believe in lust at first sight.
100) What are some words that you live by? Why?
One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice who you are, and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying.
Because it’s a good reminder to live for yourself, not someone else.
So yeah, there you go, 100 things to get to know me. I’m going to tag @rogue-one-drinks-coffee, @fannibalgirl92, @sassmastercrane, and @dustychica, and anyone else who wants to do the thing (but don’t feel like you have to).

Manifesting Destiny #29
Moon in Capricorn Of course the Goddess Center women are all abuzz in heated political debate, or rather debate about the highly hyped issues and candidates. I'm generally more into meta-politics, the underlying philosophies, paradigms, ways and means in the developing of the structure within which to perform our interdependent social roles -- much more fascinating than the media memes. Happy little packages we can carry through the day to give us our unthinking preferences are useful if we want politics to be a binary system. They don't end up so happy, though, when you do throw in some thought. Of course, thinking just leads to confusion. I am not happy about the sexist/racist political warring. I know, sisters, we want a woman in the Whitehouse (and I don't mean First Ladies and staff) because that would somehow give us, what? More power? A better shot at an executive position or fulfilling political ambition or respect? Because once we acknowledge we have these equalities of expectation, women will naturally elevate ourselves without it being worthy of comment. Until our culture respects its female half, a figurehead of gender is just another target for bad humor and rancor. To me the sensible course is to go with the candidate whose style of leadership is one I can respectfully get behind, if such a candidate presents, even from a so-called third party. Who makes these decisions about what political organizations are more legitimate than others? Is it just based on longevity? Doesn't that keep us stuck with the most entrenched in corruption? Or is it based on the size of the membership? It seems rather self-fulfilling that the groups who get the status will get most of the flocking crowds. These elections become such a big deal -- a national orgy of angry rhetoric and divisiveness. People finally vote, then seem to think we are governing ourselves by proxy, their job is over. Then we get to bitterly complain that the jokers can't get it right because they are not all things to all citizens. Meanwhile, for the local elections, the level at which most of our everyday lives intersect with democracy, small enough for individual activity to really make a difference, no one shows much notice or interest. I guess we pretty much just like to complain, not do the work to fix the problem. So, great, we get to get up on our high horses in mock battle, make our symbolic gesture in the voting booth, and righteously complain that the bastards don't know their ass from the hole we want filled in in front of our house. Ah, America, home of the equal opportunity idiots, selling our birthright for a bit of entertainment and self-satisfaction. Didn't the Roman "bread and circuses" come before the fall? Or is that why it's become so important to throw out the invading hordes of Mexicans and Muslims? We are a nation of immigrants and religious freedom, as long as you all are our kind. See why I don't get into political arguments with my friends and colleagues? I mean, I'm all for political action, but that's a totally other realm of discourse. Time seems to be moving faster lately. I have to get my brain in gear and work out the logistics of my visit to Celia for her birthday, less than a couple of weeks away. Tom had wanted to fly her in, put her up in a swank hotel, wine and dine and entertain her for a few days, including bringing her to the Mabon celebration, which would also allow me to participate. I ran this by her, and she would have none of it. She wants me to herself without distractions, she says. She always has been essentially very private. I can see that she might not be comfortable amongst a large gaggle of witches, mostly strangers to her. It's her birthday. She gets to make the rules. I'll have my work in in plenty of time for the holiday, so I may be missed a bit but not needed. Tom said he would rent me a car since I refuse to deal with airport security, and it's only a few hours' drive. Usually I take the bus. I want to go a couple of days early so it won't be a rush, so I'll have time to acclimate. Celia moved out of our old neighborhood a couple of years ago, once she realized I wouldn't be returning. She found a smaller place, top floor of a two-family double-decker, a condo, closer to her work. I won't have to deal with old neighborhood memories. I haven't made any memories in this new neighborhood. I've only briefly visited, not often, and spent that time with Celia, not the neighbors. I know she has friends at work, but she likes to compartmentalize and doesn't bring them home much. There's just her and Pandora the cat, who replaced the now long dead Mao of my childhood. This will be good. We will be adult women talking about our lives, our relationship, working on that primal mother-daughter bond. Then I will come home, back to my life, renewed, enriched by this familial experience. It's all good. It's golden, like autumn leaves.

Honey, where I should start.. Maybe your Pandora Box would be the best choice, because it made me really excited and I have something to say about it. As usual.
First of all, I feel pretty unsure of fantasy au’s in non-fantasy genres. And I am saying this as a fantasy lover. However, some of your ideas seem interesting to me. And names!! I love them all! I always have problems with female names because there are only a few I like and they almost always are not adequate to the fandom. So usually my OCs exist without any.
Funny thing the most fantastic trope of your ideas is my totally favorite.! I love mermaids with all my heart! I love them to the point my co-workers bought me a mermaid-tail-blanket. You know, I'm ALWAYS cold and I am the youngest in the team, so they still treat me like a child – in a positive way ofc. The motive of the mermaid in Black Flag? I love it.! It’s quite heartbreaking, but I am a masochist and I would love to read about the moment she finds out about Edward’s death. Such a pity you don’t have an OC dedicated to him. I love this man. Maybe because I got into AC thanks to my friends and they all said that Black Flag is the best game made from all AC franchises. I didn’t have a chance to play them all so I have no idea if it’s true.
The second one of my total faves is OC for Connor. All OCs I have ever created are herbalists/healers/medics/veterinarians so here we are, you totally bought me with this one. And I find Slavic mythology really interesting. Do you have a name for her? I am not too excited about her being an assassin, but it’s only because AC games are too brutal for me. (Yes, I am really sensitive and sometimes killing a bug is too much for me, please don’t laugh at me) I definitely prefer books. And maybe that’s why I like to think about OC/reader as a person not involved in Assassin’s Brotherhood as a member.
Could you tell me something more about Ian? He sounds quite interesting. Ok, I lied. He sounds VERY interesting and I want to know everything about him lol.
I don’t like children, but Bayek and Aya are legendary and everyone on this sick planet loves them so I am kinda interested in the background story? And Bayek has the most beautiful smile amongst all male assassins in the whole franchise. You can’t change my mind.
Buuuut, speaking of such things.. who do you find most attractive out of all AC characters and why? I know Altair is your favorite, but I am not sure if also in a matter of physical appearance.

Hi Knifey!
I'm really happy you like my little Pandora Box! I have drabbles for some of those ideas, some of them are in this phase of 'im still not sure if I'll write it but it is/was fun to think about. Also allow me to put rest of the answer under the cut!
Mermaids and sirens are one of my fave supernatural beings so I'm so happy you like that idea! Maybe one day I will have oc for Edward but to be honest the game makes me sad. I don't like how Edward behaves - how he treats his wife, the sugar seller and generally people around.
I won't laugh at you for not like killing because it's 100% valid! And this oc for Connor is like that. She used to be an assassin but left because killing is terrible for her and it's completely against her doctors' vows to never hurt. Honestly the moment when Edward buys his swords and Bonnet goes with 'i didn't have money for swords so I have this tiny knife' broke my heart. I was so angry at Edward I had to turn off the game.
As for other games - I started with Syndicate, then Unity, Odyssey, Origins, AC 1 and then I followed the order. I just played Valhalla after Rogue but before black flag. So as you see Edward is my last assassin so maybe that's why I have troubles with liking him got now. But I hope it will get better!
About Ian. Do you know anime called Durarara? I honesty base Ian on Izaya a bit. If not then it's fine! Ian is an informant who just loves to create chaos and observe people. He is curious by them. He is especially dangerous because this feeling of awe towards humanity is genuine. Because of it he can be bought with money or threatened by death. He does as he please, not caring for consequences as long as he can watch people and their choices.
Bayek. Aya. I love them so so much and I'm always so sad about their story. I wished they could be together happily ever after. This child oc is one of those 'idk if I'll write it but it's fun to think about it from time to time' kind of thing. (Same goes for witch for Malik, tbh Im going more and more to the side that I won't write it because it just doesn't feel right 😂)
And yes! Bayek has beautiful smile!
Who's attractive? Tbh I find them all attractive in different ways. I want to way Altair is the most handsome but he has like 13 pixels on his whole face 😂 if they made him with th same quality as Alexios, Bayek or Eivor it would be much easier to decide!
I think Arno (my type - dark eyes, dark hair) Shay and Alexios are the moet handsome for me. Secondly comes Jacob! Then Bayek, Eivor, Connor, Altair, Ezio, Malik, Edward (he is the last, sorry ;; )
Who is the most handsome for you? And which AC games/books did you read? I read only brotherhood do km looking for recommendations (also I'm still reading ac1 book but the feelings)
