#morningwarmupsketch 11/17/20 At this point, I don't think it is a spoiler to mention the surprise cameo of Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim's Convivence) as X-Wing pilot, Captain Carson Teva in season two, episode two of The Mandalorian: The Passenger. Paul is an enormous fan of Star Wars and has been known to appear at conventions cosplaying as an imperial officer, a scout trooper, an Imperial Pilot, and of course an X-Wing Pilot. Even though this is a small role, as a person of color I am really happy to see a growing representation of my fellow Asians as they are out patrolling the New Republic. #digitalink #procreate #digitalsketch #mandalorian #paulsunhyunglee @Angryappa #xwing #CaptainCarsonTeva #CarsonTeva #starwars #Asian #representation #georgelucas #kimsconvenience https://www.instagram.com/p/CHsxdQKj0Gi/?igshid=1hmwknrelks5e

A P P A ! I'm still shaken from seeing #KimsConvenience tonight. This #play and everyone involved are an #inspiration to me especially as a stage #performer of #Asian descent. I wish them nothing but great success when they tour in #NewYork. This play is so important more than ever and I think USA needs it right now. If you live in #NYC, promise me you'll check it out. We are so blessed to have this as a TV show as well in #Canada. Meeting Paul (who plays Appa) was a dream come true, he really is my hero. Appa & Umma you guys made my night. #okseeyou #me #friends #stage #theatre #soulpepper #starstruck #paulsunhyunglee #asian #canadian #the6 #the6ix #Toronto #regentpark #distillerydistrict #asianinvasion #happy #smile #Appa #photooftheday (at Soulpepper Theatre Company)

https://youtu.be/KEXpNrIo9_o We all want our Star Wars goodies signed, especially when the star of the show is a personal pal, so watch when Toying Around get pal Paul Sun-Hyung Lee to sign their Carson Teva helmet. It’s so wonderful to see my friend Paul Sun-Hyung Lee on screen as Carson Teva in Star Wars Ahsoka, The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett! Thanks to a friend of mine of hooked me up with a helmet of Paul’s character, I wanted to pull a small prank on him when I got it signed! Thanks Paulie! Follow Paul on youtube @Bitterasiandude and catch Boba Squadron right here on this channel! [amazon box="1787739996"]

With all of our shows on winter hiatus we have been checking out some other programming that usually fall outside our radar. Both are coincidentally are Canadian, and apparently in Canada you can throw the occasional F-Bomb during Prime Time. (Please let me know if I am wrong about this.) The first is Schitt’s Creek, which I had always heard was good. Em and I watched it and loved it! We had no idea that Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara were in it. They play Johnny and Moira Rose, I have loved them from SCTV, and Em has loved them as a duo from Christopher Guest movies like Best in Show. We thought we were going to hate their kids David and Alexis, played by Dan Levy and Annie Murphy, but within the first season you started to watch the characters grow in interesting and organic ways. They were a family that did bicker and fight but truly loved and cared for each other. We devoured the the first three seasons in two weeks and we are hungry for more. The second series in called Kim’s Convience, about a first generation Korean family living and working in Toronto. I love this family, Appa (which I think is Korean for father) played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee evokes an amalgam image of my Grandfather, my Dad, and my Uncle Warren. (Full disclosure that I’m half Chinese, not Korean, but there are some close similarities between the cultures within family dynamics that I could identify with.) There is also Umma (the informal Korean word of Mother) played by Jean Yoon, the daughter Janet, played by Andrea Bang, and Simu Liu who plays Jung the older brother who is estranged from the Father. The show does not portray them as perfect. The charm of the show is that is they are human and most of the time doing their best in the modern world. If you are looking for something new to watch give these shows a chance. I think you may really enjoy them. #schittscreek #eugenelevy #catherineohara #danlevy #anniemurphy #KimsConvience #Appa #paulsunhyunglee #umma #jeanyoon #andreabang #simuliu #pop #cbc #sitcom https://www.instagram.com/p/BuW5zAADG9J/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1j4478tfe322w

The Mandoverse has developed solidly and consistently since the first episode of the hit Disney Plus show The Mandalorian arrived back in 2019, carving out a corner of the Star Wars galaxy that uses the backdrop of the political landscape half a decade beyond Return of the Jedi focusing on its own characters (with some notable character cameos along the way). Of these new characters there's one who has quietly and stoically become a vital thread between these shows; Captain Carson Teva, as played by South Korean-Canadian actor Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Lee described his arrival into the Star Wars galaxy in a recent interview. “[Deborah Chow] said, ‘I was trying to get in touch with you because Dave Filoni saw Kim’s Convenience and really liked your work in it, and he wants to write you something.’ I immediately had a heart attack. It was my first role in the United States as an actor (I’ve worked on US productions before, but always in Canada), and I didn’t have to audition for it. There were many, many times I wept because I was just so happy … I never thought I would ever get this opportunity, to sort of live up my childhood dreams. And there I was, a trained professional, an award winning actor from Canada, coming to the United States in his first ever role being directed by Carl Weathers, and then Peyton Reed, and meeting Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, and having all of Hollywood sort of around, it was dizzying,” Now ensconced in the galaxy, Lee would soon learn just how important the character of Carson Teva was. “I had no idea of the importance or what plans they had with the character of Carson Teva. I just knew what part my character played in certain scenes, and the rest was kind of a mystery. But then when the dots started to connect, it was a really cool thing. It’s a great honor to be able to play this character who is sort of the connective tissue between these universes. He’s a man of action who has been searching and digging, he sees patterns, he sees what’s happening. He can’t convince people that it’s as serious as he knows it’s going to be. That’s the dramatic irony, we all know what happens twenty years down the road. He’s kind of like the prophet Cassandra who is just doomed to be ignored even though they can see the future. I still have no idea where this is all leading. I’m just gratified and so happy that Jon and Dave want to keep me on board and play this character who is becoming more and more important." It's a fantastic and warm interview that's well worth a read in full, so head to Tatooine Times and check it out. [amazon box="1787739996"]
